Chelsea moves to 2nd, City stays perfect at home

LONDON (AP) - Chelsea recovered from conceding a goal after only 13 seconds to move to second in the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Southampton while defending champion Manchester United and Liverpool lost ground in the title race on Sunday.John Terry scored on his 400th Premier League appearance after Gary Cahill canceled Southamptons opener from Jay Rodriguez at Stamford Bridge, and substitute Demba Ba sealed the victory in the 90th.Chelsea trails leader Arsenal by four points after the Gunners defeated Cardiff 3-0 on Saturday. What can you do when they score after 13 seconds? It was the worst possible start but we were able to keep balanced and take a risk in the second half, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said. In this crazy league this result is important as once again title contenders have dropped points. In a very tight Premier League, only six points separate Chelsea from ninth-place Tottenham after 13 matches.Manchester City moved third, two points behind Chelsea, after defeating Swansea 3-0 with two goals by France international Samir Nasri. City has won all seven home matches this season at the Etihad Stadium.Liverpools title hopes stumbled as Hull beat the Reds 3-1 its first win in 17 attempts and Manchester United was held to a 2-2 draw at Tottenham.Chelsea fans were silenced almost immediately after Rodriguez made the most of an error from Michael Essien, who was making his first Premier League start since May 2012. But his mistake was not fatal to Mourinhos team as Chelsea fought back after the interval.Cahill leveled with a header from close range in the 56th and Terry put Chelsea in front with a glancing header in the 62nd minute for his 34th Premier League goal before Demba Ba put the game beyond reach in the last minute. Its very significant for me. Its a huge achievement to maintain it at a top club like I have, said Terry, who has played all 400 games for Chelsea. Im thankful for the fans as well for sticking by me.Nasris brace and Alvaro Negredos first half free kick were enough for Manchester City to beat Swansea and maintain its perfect home record in the league, with 29 goals and only two conceded.City keeper Costel Pantilimon, who was again preferred to Joe Hart in goal, was tested by Jonjo Shelvey before Nasri proved unstoppable in the second half for the hosts.Everything is fine at the moment, we had a tough first half but we came back with the best intentions, scored three goals and kept a clean sheet so its a good afternoon for us, Nasri said. We have to improve our form away from home. Six points is not a lot, in terms of the gap before we face Arsenal.Earlier, Jake Livermore and David Meyler scored their first goals this season to give Hull their first-ever win over Liverpool.Hull went ahead after Jake Livermores shot from outside the area took a deflection off Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel and looped over goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in the 20th minute at the KC Stadium. Steven Gerrard equalized seven minutes later with a well-placed free kick through a sudden hole in the wall created by Skrtel.David Meyler put Hull ahead again in the 72nd with a left-footed shot and Skrtel finished a miserable afternoon for Liverpool with a spectacular own-goal header in the 87th.Liverpool missed England forward Daniel Sturridge who is likely to be out for at least six weeks with an ankle injury. In the early match, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United shared the points at White Hart Lane though Spurs dominated and created the best chances.Wayne Rooney twice helped the Red Devils come from behind, scoring his second goal from the penalty spot in the 57th minute. The England forward had first leveled from close range against the run of play after Kyle Walker had put Tottenham in front.Tottenham had their own pride, which they showed today in their performance, United boss David Moyes said. I think the big games are all to come in the second half of the season ... There will be a lot of teams now looking to chase them (Arsenal) down and hopefully we will be one of them.In the wake of Fulhams 3-0 loss to West Ham, manager Martin Jol was fired on Sunday as he paid the price for a disappointing start to the Premier League season.Fulham is in 18th place and in the relegation zone, having earned just 10 points from 13 games.Fulham said in a statement on Sunday that owner and chairman Shahid Khan, who bought the team this year, made the decision to part ways with Jol. The club said first-team coach Rene Meulensteen will take over with immediate effect, and will be in charge for the game against Tottenham on Wednesday.

Syrian aircraft kill 50 in northern rebel town

BEIRUT (AP) - Syrian government helicopters dropped barrels full of explosives on a rebel-held town near the northern city of Aleppo, killing at least 50 people in two separate attacks over the weekend, activists said Sunday. The shelling Sunday hit near a bakery in the town of al-Bab, located east of Aleppo, killing at least 24 people, said Rami Abdurrahman of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Akram al-Halabi, a rebel spokesman based in nearby in Aleppo. The Observatory obtains its information from a network of activists on the ground. Syrian state media said government forces killed terrorists, which is how they describe armed rebels fighting against President Bashar Assads rule. The attack followed a similar bombing on Saturday, when army helicopters targeted a rebel compound in al-Bab, but missed their target and hit a market, killing 26 people, Abdurrahman said. The army used barrel bombs in both attacks, which contain hundreds of pounds (kilograms) of explosives.Assads forces have relied heavily on air power in the last year to regain control of opposition-held territory, particularly in the north and along the border with Turkey. Rebels also control parts of Aleppo, Syrias largest city and its commercial center.Activists say barrel-bomb airstrikes often precede government ground offensives. Assads troops may be mounting a major operation to recapture territory and bolster its position ahead of peace talks planned for January in Geneva.Assads forces also have been fighting in central Syrias rugged Qalamoun region near the Lebanese border to cut off rebel supply routes and stem the flow of incoming fighters. On Sunday, the Observatory said government forces fought rebels, including members of the al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra, inside the predominantly Christian town of Maaloula near Damascus.Maaloula lies on the edge of Qalamoun, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of the capital. The town had been firmly in the governments grip, but is surrounded by rebel-held territory. It is near Nabek, where there have been clashes for the past three days.Nabek is located along a key highway connecting Damascus with Homs, Syrias third largest city. Clearing towns and villages of rebels along the highway would help the government regain control of its main overland supply route.Military aircraft targeted Nabek on Sunday, just hours after a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden car near a police station in the town, killing five members of the security forces, the Observatory said.

Iran, world powers to meet next week on nuclear deal

Posted:

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran and world powers are likely to meet next week to discuss implementation of a hard-fought deal they clinched on Tehrans disputed nuclear programme, Irans lead negotiator said Sunday. The breakthrough accord struck on November 24 between Iran and the P51 -- the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany -- foresees Tehran rolling back some of its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. The freeze is meant to make it more difficult for Iran to develop a breakout capability to quickly build a nuclear weapon, and the interim accord aims to build confidence while Tehran and the P51 hammer out a comprehensive agreement.Possibly our experts will hold a meeting next week in Vienna or Geneva to review the details of implementing the agreement, state broadcaster IRIB quoted deputy foreign minister Abbas Araqchi, Irans lead negotiator in the talks, as saying. He added that the first phase of the accord, which will be in force for six months, will be implemented once the finer details have been thrashed out.Tehrans envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Reza Najafi, indicated on Friday that Irans six-month freeze of its nuclear programme would start by early January.Araqchi gave no date for the next round of talks but the ISNA news agency, citing an Iranian official, said political directors of the countries involved were expected to meet with IAEA officials in Vienna on December 9 and 10.The goal of that meeting is to set a date for the inspection (by IAEA experts) of the Gachin (uranium) mine in Bandar Abbas province and the implementation of four other articles of the agreement, the unnamed official said.Western nations and Israel have long suspected Iran of covertly seeking a nuclear weapons capability, charges denied by Tehran, which insists its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful.

28 killed in Iraq bloodshed after deadly month

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Attacks in Iraq including a suicide bomb at a funeral killed 28 people Sunday as figures showed nearly 950 died last month in spiralling violence despite ramped up security measures.Iraqs worst protracted period of unrest since it emerged from gruesome Sunni-Shiite violence in 2006-2007 has sparked fears of a return to the sectarian bloodletting that killed tens of thousands of people.Officials have adopted an array of measures aimed at halting the attacks -- focusing their efforts on resurgent Al-Qaeda front groups emboldened by the war in neighbouring Syria -- but their efforts have thus far failed to curb the daily violence. On Sunday a suicide bomber blew himself up at the funeral of an anti-Qaeda fighter killed a day earlier near the restive confessionally mixed city of Baquba. The blast at the graveyard in nearby Wajihiyah village killed 12 people and left another 45 wounded, police and a doctor said.Mudher al-Shallal al-Araki, the 27-year-old who was being buried, had been a fighter in the Sahwa, the Sunni tribal militias that from late 2006 sided with US forces against their co-religionists in Al-Qaeda, helping to turn the tide of Iraqs insurgency.Sunni militants regard the Sahwa as traitors and often target them.Arakis father was a leader in the Sahwa and a sheikh of the Arakiya tribe.Twin bombings in Saadiyah, which like Wajihiyah lies in Diyala province, killed five more people while violence in Baghdad and the Sunni towns and cities of Fallujah, Abu Ghraib, Mosul and Hawijah left 11 others dead, officials said. The bloodshed was the latest in a months-long spike in violence that has killed more than 6,100 people, according to an AFP tally based on security and medical reports.New data from the health, interior and defence ministries showed that 948 people were killed in violence last month -- 852 civilians, 53 policemen and 43 soldiers. The overall monthly toll was marginally down from Octobers multi-year high of 964, but November was still among Iraqs bloodiest months since 2008, when it was slowly emerging from the brutal sectarian unrest.

Karzai accuses US of halting military supplies over pact row

Posted:

KABUL (AFP) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday accused the United States of halting essential supplies to some Afghan army and police units in order to pressure the country to quickly sign a key security pact. The interruption of fuel and equipment had occurred two or three times, according to a statement issued by the presidential office following a meeting of the national security council, attended by Karzai. As a result of the interruptions, the affected units had ceased their operations, according to the statement, adding Washington had violated its commitments in these areas. The council considered the cutting of fuel and supportive services to army and police as a means of pressure by the US government so that Afghanistan ignores its conditions in the BSA (Bilateral Security Agreement) and signs it with the US, the statement said. The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force later issued a statement denying Karzais allegations. There has been no stoppage in the delivery of requested fuel and we continue to process all orders as soon as they are received from the ANSF (Afghan National Security Forces). We remain committed to supporting our ANSF partners and will continue to do so.The pact is aimed at defining the terms of the US military presence on Afghan soil after the withdrawal of 75,000 NATO troops at the end of 2014.While the US is seeking to wrap up the accord before the end of the year, Karzai has indicated his country would sign after next years presidential elections in April. The prospect of delaying the pact has exasperated the US, which has threatened to withdraw all its troops, raising fears the country may be unable to control violence by Taliban insurgents.

7 killed in Chinese-run factory in Italy

MILAN (AP) - A fire early Sunday swept through an illegal, makeshift dormitory in a Chinese-run garment factory in Tuscany, killing seven, firefighters said. The blaze, which partially collapsed the factorys roof, broke out in a loft where 11 people were sleeping, said fire inspector Stefano Giannelli. The cause was under investigation. Two people remained hospitalized, while two were treated and released, Giannelli said. The Tuscan city of Prato has become a center for Chinese-run factories producing low-cost garments mostly for international retailers an activity that has all but decimated Italys own lower-end clothing industry. Many of the workers arent declared to authorities, sleeping, eating and living in the factories where they work.Tuscanys regional governor Enrico Rossi said there needed to be greater coordination between Italy and China on the thousands of businesses that have sprung up over the last two decades as well as better supervision of the structures. Rossi noted that numerous garment factories are in the hands of Chinese organized crime. This is on all of our consciences. We need to see the situation for what it is. This is the largest concentration of black-market labor in Italys central north, probably all of Europe, Rossi said on Sky TG 24.Prato Mayor Roberto Cenni said authorities inspect hundreds of the businesses each year, shutting down the ones found to be operating illegally. But they reopen in another area, with the same procedures, he told La7 private TV.The business daily Il Sole 24 Ore reported that about 30,000 Chinese workers in Prato are employed by 3,500 companies that generate 2 billion euros ($2.7 billion) a year in revenues half of those undeclared. Thats alongside Pratos traditional textile industry employing some 20,000 workers in 2,800 companies generating 3 billion euros a year in revenues, the paper said.An ex-military police officer passing by said he notified authorities of the fire. Leonardo Tuci told the Italian news agency ANSA that he saw smoke coming from the factory and Chinese workers screaming for help. One man was trying to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.A Chinese woman, half wet and completely black due to the smoke was telling me, There are many other people on the mezzanine, pointing to the highest part of the building as you enter, Tuci said on Tuscan TV, adding that the flames were so strong that he couldnt see anything.

England still undecided on who will bat at No. 3

Posted:

ADELAIDE (AP) - Ian Bell and Joe Root are still in the calculations to bat at No. 3 in the second Ashes test, with England batting coach Graham Gooch saying nobody would be shielded after Jonathan Trotts sudden departure due to a stress-related illness.Im not a believer in youve got to be very careful about looking after people in what number they bat, Gooch told a news conference Monday. If youre asked to bat three, four, five or six, you have to do that job. Im sure both of them will want that challenge if theyre asked.England was dismissed for 136 and 179 in a humbling 381-run loss in the first test, where Australian paceman Mitchell Johnson used the extra bounce at the Gabba to unsettle the touring batsmen with some fiery short-pitched bowling.Root defied the Australian attack in the second innings, finishing unbeaten on 26 in an England stand that included breaks for hail and rain and some thunderbolts of bouncers from Johnson.Trott, who had two batting failures in Brisbane, quit the tour to return to England in the immediate aftermath of the first test, leaving England 10 days to determine who would move up the order to fill the crucial No. 3 position.Moving Root, who has played as an opener and most of the top-order positions in his brief, 12-test career, would be the least disruptive option because Bell is a proven scorer at No. 5.Whoever moves up to No. 3, and its probably fair to say Joe Root and Ian Bell are the two candidates, Im sure theyll stand up for England, Gooch said. Thats what theyve got to do.The 31-year-old Bell has batted at No. 5 in 62 of his 94 tests and scored 16 of his 20 test centuries from that position. He has scored two centuries batting at No. 3 in 21 tests. His only tests against Australia batting at No. 3 where on the 2006-07 tour when England was swept 5-0.Root, who spent five months playing in Adelaide grade cricket in the 2010-11 season while attending the academy named after current Australia coach Darren Lehmann, says hes ready for the challenge. He made his test debut in India last December and has shown versatility by batting up and down the order. He has scored two centuries including a test high 180 against Australia at Lords in July when he opened with captain Alastair Cook and has 791 runs at an average of almost 40.There have been different obstacles to overcome and I just want to improve as a player, the 22-year-old Root said. This match is massive, and its a great opportunity to go out there and make a statement as a team and put a big score on the board. We cant think about last week; we have to think about this week put ourselves in the front seat on that first day in Adelaide.Much was made of the heated exchanges in Brisbane, were players traded angry insults and Australia captain Michael Clarke was fined after using an expletive at England tailender Jimmy Anderson that was picked up by a stump microphone used for the TV broadcast.Root, who was targeted in an off-field episode by David Warner that resulted in the Australian opener being suspended and missing the first two tests of the last Ashes series, said the tension on the field was all part of the Ashes.I enjoy being out there, and the battles you get are all part of the game, he said. Im sure it will continue the whole series.I dont think theres much point talking about it. If we perform well thats best way of counteracting it.

Iraq oil exports rise for third month: ministry

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq's oil exports rose for a third successive month in November but remained below historic highs as the country looks for revenues to fund much-needed reconstruction, data released Sunday showed.Average daily exports rose to 2.381 million barrels per day (bpd), from 2.25 million bpd the previous month and 2.07 million bpd in September, according to figures released by the oil ministry.Crude sales brought in revenues of $7.32 billion, almost marking a third consecutive increase.Despite the increase, average exports remained below the recent highs of 2.62 million bpd achieved as recently as April. Most of Iraq's crude is exported via its southern terminals near the port city of Basra, but a significant portion goes through a northern pipeline to the Turkish port of Ceyhan.Exports had been lower in recent months as a result of sabotage on the Ceyhan pipeline, as well as poor weather and maintenance being carried out on the southern terminals.Iraq is heavily dependent on oil exports, and the government is seeking to dramatically ramp up its sales in the coming years to fund the reconstruction of its battered infrastructure.Officials are aiming to increase production capacity to nine million bpd by 2017, a target that the International Monetary Fund and International Energy Agency have warned is over-optimistic.
