Jordan wins Security Council seat, replaces Saudis

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. General Assembly elected Jordan to the Security Council on Friday to replace Saudi Arabia, which had rejected the seat in an unprecedented act to protest the councils failure to end the Syrian and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.Arab countries chose Jordan as a replacement, and Asian nations endorsed it to take the traditional Arab seat on the U.N.s most powerful body. It received 178 yes votes in the election.Saudi Arabia got one vote, and four countries in the 193-member world body abstained. The 10 other countries were either absent or unable to vote because of unpaid dues.Jordans Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said the country was extremely honored and humbled by the near consensus support from the international community, which recognized Jordans relentless efforts in the pursuit of peace and security, the very principles that the Security Council is mandated to preserve.Saudi Arabia stunned the diplomatic world by rejecting the Security Council seat less than 24 hours after it was elected on Oct. 17.The Saudi Foreign Ministry denounced the Security Councils inability to resolve the Syrian civil war and Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to convene a conference on creating a Mideast zone free of weapons of mass destruction. Saudi Arabia also was upset about the warming U.S.-Iran relationship, seeing Tehran as its main rival in the region.Asked whether Jordan agreed that the Security Council was dysfunctional, Judeh said, Saudi Arabia declined to take the seat for its sovereign reasons. These are reasons that we respect. This is their independent decision, he said. The Security Council has five permanent members with veto power the U.S., Russia, China, Britain and France and 10 elected members who serve two-year terms.Since joining the world body in 1955, Jordan has held the council seat twice before. It will join four other newcomers to the council on Jan. 1 Chad, Nigeria, Lithuania and Chile.

US urges swift talks to end Bangladesh unrest

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Bangladeshi political parties must come together immediately to halt a spate of violence and ensure free and fair elections next month, a top US official said Friday. At least 67 people have died in clashes since October when an 18-party opposition movement launched a wave of protests calling on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign before the January 5 polls. The opposition, led by Hasinas bitter rival, Khaleda Zia, fears the premier will try to rig the vote in a country which for decades has been plagued by coups and political upheaval. We believe the need is now even more urgent for the major political parties to engage immediately in constructive dialogue, to find a way forward, to hold elections that are free, fair and credible, said deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf.Violence of any kind is not acceptable and it must stop immediately, she added. In the latest incident, suspected opposition activists on Wednesday derailed a train in northern Gaibandha by removing metal links holding the tracks together, killing at least three people and injuring dozens.

Icy weather bears down on Texas, much of Midwest

Posted:

DALLAS (AP) - Snow and freezing rain blanketed normally sun-swept North Texas, where residents accustomed to warmer temperatures appeared to heed warnings Friday to stay off nearly impassable roadways and out of a skin-stinging cold.More than 1,000 flights were cancelations at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, one of the nations busiest airports.Earlier this week, many in Texas were basking in spring-like temperatures of over 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius). But by Thursday, Texas was facing the same wintry blast thats hitting much of the U.S., bringing frigid temperatures, ice and snow.Freezing rain started to pelt highways and power lines Thursday evening, leaving a quarter-million customers without electricity Friday morning. Schools canceled classes a day before, many businesses gave workers the day off, and frigid roads and sidewalks were mostly empty. In the Dallas area, agencies and residents are still haunted by a fiasco two years ago, when an inadequate response to a winter storm crippled the region and left visitors stranded on impassable highways. This time, all of North Texas mobilized before an expected half-inch of freezing rain began to come down. Temperatures are forecast to stay below freezing after the rain passes, meaning residents will have to contend with icy roads through the weekend.Road crews were continuously dumping sand on largely empty highways, and utility company Oncor reported 250,000 customers were without power in the Dallas area, where temperatures had fallen into the 20s and some places saw light snow.Police in Arlington, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Dallas, reported that icy roads were a factor in the death of one driver whose car hit a truck pulled to the side of the road. Three other traffic deaths in Oklahoma and Indiana were blamed on the weather. At Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a key hub for Fort Worth-based American Airlines, many travelers were stuck waiting and hoping for another flight to take them to their destination. Those arriving in North Texas were having trouble finding cabs as many drivers stayed home. Dallas-area light rail trains were not running.

Football: Spain face Dutch in WC repeat, England draw Italy

Posted:

COSTA DO SAUIPE (AFP) - Reigning champions Spain will begin their defence of the World Cup with a rematch of the 2010 final against the Netherlands, while England were paired with Italy in Fridays draw.Spain, who won their first title in South Africa four years ago, start their Group B campaign against the three-time runners-up on June 13 in Salvador. They will also meet Chile, who they beat in the group stage in 2010, in Rio and Australia in Curitiba.I said to people this morning we were going to get Holland and we did, in the first game no less, said Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque.Holland will demand that we start at our highest level.Hosts and five-time champions Brazil were drawn to face Croatia in the opening game, scheduled for Sao Paulo on June 12 -- assuming the venue is ready after a fatal accident last week delayed prospective completion until April. The Brazilians will then take on Mexico and Cameroon in a Group A that appears on the face of it unthreatening, if not easy.We must pay close attention to the opening phase, said Brazils 2002 title-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. We must play every game as if it were the final right from the outset.England, meanwhile, will start off with a Group D meeting against four-time champions Italy in the heat of Amazonian venue Manaus on June 14 -- though it is at least an evening kick-off.That match is a repeat of the Euro 2012 quarter-final, which Italy, who knocked England out of the 1978 World Cup qualifiers, won on penalties. Its a tough group, theres no doubt about that, said England coach Roy Hodgson, whose team also face Uruguay, a third former champion in their group, and Costa Rica.In Italy and Uruguay its almost as though we have got two number one seeds in our group.Italian opposite number Cesare Prandelli said the group looked a tough call.It is the Group of Death, a very difficult group. We are worried about the distances we shall have to cover. The game against England will be very important, Prandelli added. After the Italians, Hodgsons side then take on Uruguay in Sao Paulo on June 19 and Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte on June 24.A notable subplot will see Germany go up against the United States, now coached by former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann in Recife on June 26 in their final pool match.Thats one of those crazy stories that football writes, Klinsmann told German broadcaster ARD.Germany, whose third and last title came in 1990, also drew Ghana and Portugal in Group G.Klinsmann coached Germany to third at the 2006 World Cup with current German boss Joachim Loew his then assistant. So, we will be meeting old friends, smiled Loew.Argentina, champions in 1978 and 1986, meet sole newcomers Bosnia in Rio on June 15 and then will face Iran and Nigeria.I am pleased with the draw as we didnt get into a Group of Death scenario and we also shant have to travel huge distances, said Alex Sabella, the Argentina coach. Its a good group for us, said Nigeria assistant coach Daniel Amokachi.Argentina are the world powers, but you cannot afford to underrate Iran or Bosnia. Overall, its a good draw.Former England boss Fabio Capello was happy after he saw his Russian charges draw seeded Belgium, South Korea and Algeria in Group H.Im pleased with the draw. Some of the other groups consist of much stronger teams, said Capello, while conceding that Belgium is currently one of the strongest European teams.France, champions in 1998 but forced to come through the playoffs, will meet Group E seeds Switzerland as well as Ecuador and Honduras in a mixed bag group.Japan, meanwhile, saw themselves lumped in with seeded Colombia, Ivory Coast and Greece in Group C.After a poignant homage to the late Nelson Mandela, the draw began to the exhilarating sound of samba at the northeastern beach resort of Costa do Sauipe. The draw build-up had been dominated by news of stadium delays and anti-World Cup campaigners threatening public protest.Yet Mandelas death changed the tone as participants remembered how he saw in sport a means of fostering social progress.Fridays lottery involved some complex juggling by FIFA to separate as far as possible teams from the same continent. And, while five groups unavoidably contained two European sides, given the Old Continents 13 qualifiers in the 32-strong field, they just about managed it.

Football: Barca back to winning ways in Cup opener

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona bounced back from consecutive defeats away to Ajax and Athletic Bilbao with a 4-1 win at third-tier Cartagena in the first leg of their Copa del Rey fourth round tie on Friday. With Barca in need of a response after two disappointing performances, coach Gerardo Martino named a strong side including Alexis Sanchez, Cesc Fabregas and Sergio Busquets. However, Fernando fired the hosts into a shock lead after just 16 minutes when he got in behind the Barca defence before finishing across Jose Manuel Pinto into the far corner.Pedro Rodriguez calmed the visitors nerves eight minutes before the break with an equaliser and Fabregas completed the turnaround with a neat finish seven minutes later.Barca should have put the tie to bed early in the second period as Sanchez and Fabregas passed up fine chances to extend their advantage.Pedro did eventually finally make it 3-1 15 minutes from time when he finished expertly from Sanchezs pass. And Cameroonian teenager Jean Marie Dongou rounded off the scoring in stoppage time with his first senior goal for the club on the rebound after Pedro had struck the post.

Football: Juve open up six-point lead in Serie A

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - Arturo Vidal and Giorgio Chiellini struck in either half to hand Juventus a 2-0 away win at Bologna on Friday which gave the Serie A champions a six-point lead over Roma.Four days ahead of a crucial trip to Istanbul, where Juve need a point against Galatasaray to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League, coach Antonio Conte left a host of regulars on the bench.Fabio Quagliarella and Mirko Vucinic led Juves attack leaving Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente to make later appearances, while Angelo Ogbonna replaced centre-back Leonardo Bonucci.Mauricio Isla and Federico Peluso were also deployed as wing backs, in place of Stephan Lichsteiner and Kwadwo Asamoah, while Paul Pogba took injured Andrea Pirlos role at the centre of the five-man midfield.Despite the reshuffling, Juve had no trouble dictating play against a side that has only one home win so far this season and were sent crashing out of the Italian Cup by Serie B side Siena, in Bologna, on Tuesday.Juve should have had several goals by the interval but Quagliarella and Claudio Marchisio spurned early chances against impressive home keeper Gianluca Curci. The visitors eventually found the net when Pelusos cross found Vidal unmarked and the Chilean had no trouble sending it over the onrushing Curci.Quagliarella then sent an effort go just wide under a challenge from Mikael Antonsson while at the other end Gianluigi Buffon produced two solid blocks to deny long-range efforts from Alessandro Diamanti, the first a free kick. Two minutes later Bologna saw claims for a penalty waved away after the ball played Vucinics arm.The Montenegrin had earlier came down hard under a challenge and was replaced by Llorente just before the break.Bologna threatened briefly at the end of the half, when Vidal saw a shot go wide after Llorentes dribbling run left the Chilean with a clear shooting chance.Curci really came into his own as Bologna suffered in the second half, the Italian blocking at Llorentes feet after he had been set up by Ogbonna and saving again two minutes later after Llorente spun on Pelusos short pass to the right of goal.Conte replaced Peluso with Asamoah and a minute later the Ghanaian had the ball in the net, only to be ruled offside.Tevez replaced Quagliarella shortly after and although a constant threat Juve survived a scare when late substitute Jonathan Cristaldo pounced on Chiellinis poor clearance to fly past Ogbonna and send an angled drive just past the upright.Bologna threatened again when Archimede Morleo got on the end of Diamantis pacy cross from the right to send a bouncing header a foot wide of Buffons post.On 85 minutes, Curci did well to deny Llorenta again when he parried the strikers shot from close range. But the keeper could do little when Chiellieni got his head to a corner at the near post to send Curci sprawling into the net in the 89th minute.Roma, second at six points, are in action on Sunday but their potentially tricky clash with Fiorentina comes on the back of four consecutive draws.

Golf: Donaldson leads at halfway stage in Sun City

Posted:

SUN CITY (AFP) - Welshman Jamie Donaldson stormed into the lead in the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City on Friday, establishing a three-stroke lead over Henrik Stenson and Ryan Moore. The morning after the death of former South African President Nelson Mandela began with a minutes silence in honour of the great man at the Gary Player Country Club, before the weather delayed first round was resumed.Donaldson completed a first round of five under par 67 to finish round one in second spot on the leaderboard. He soon put his foot down to accelerate away from the field, firing seven birdies in 14 holes to move to 11 under par and three clear of golfs form man Stenson and American Moore.I played really well. I hit a lot of iron shots quite close which enabled me to make a few putts. The greens are not big here, so if you can get it near the flag you are never too far away, said Donaldson.I have been playing nicely the last three weeks; it is a good end to the year and obviously the last event of the season.I am looking forward to some time at home with the family and Christmas as home, but I have been on a good run and have two important days to go first, which I am very much looking forward to.Asked if he would like to take a $1.25 million Christmas present home to the family, the Welshman smiled: That would be a nice present from Santa.Stenson, Moore and the rest of the world class field, including defending champion Martin Kaymer and Thomas Bjorn (both tied on seven under) may have something to say about Donaldsons plans for a huge Christmas bonus over the next two days.Stenson admitted that his scorching form over the last few months was beginning to catch up with him but hopes the adrenaline can keep flowing for a couple of more days to get him over the line.I am kind of running off fumes to be honest, said Stenson. But I have put myself in a pretty good position so hopefully I can keep going and keep making birdies. If you can get yourself in a decent position early in the week then that can give you the little bit extra motivation to keep going to try and be there on Sunday so I am hoping that will be the case again this week.I am pretty tired mentally and physically but please dont tell Jamie, Ryan Moore and the other guys at the top of the leaderboard - well keep that little secret between.
