Hafeez apologises for poor performance against Windies

Posted:

DHAKA (Agencies) - Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez on Tuesday apologised to his team's fans for not doing better in the key game against West Indies which defeated them by 84 runs in Dhaka and reached semi finals of the World T20.It was the first time that Pakistan, finalists in the inaugural World T20 in 2007 and champions in 2009, failed to reach the knock-out rounds in the five editions of the tournament.“I must thank our fans for their support and apologise for letting them down,” he said.“This was obviously not our best performance, but we had the game in control at the start.”“All credit to the West Indies for taking the game away from us. Those four final overs cost us dearly and then we panicked at the start of our chase. It became a very difficult target to chase,” said the Pakistani captain.“Our aim was to get to at least 135-140 with the start we got but the self-belief we had, the form and power that we have, the momentum (being) with us, there was chance to be positive and get 160.”“In the last four overs, even our best bowlers Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul did not get their basics right and conceded too many runs in the end... When our chase started, we did not get any momentum, playing shots which were not there,” said Hafeez.Meanwhile, Dwayne Bravo, who was named man of the match, said he would have preferred to share it with Captain Darren Sammy and Samuel Badree.“We have the bowling to defend any total, but I really did not expect the match to be so easy,” he said.“Pakistan did have our top order in some bother, but then our batting runs deep and we showed that today.”“I think Sammy and Badree were equally deserving of the award. We have the momentum going into the semi-finals and I am confident we will do well there too,” said the West Indian player.“We had nothing to lose, we were under pressure,” he said, adding that, “I said to Sammy 'Don't worry about picking (Pakistani spinner Saeed) Ajmal or trying to rotate (strike) ... Keep your eyes on the ball. We are powerful enough. If we get close to the ball, we'll hit it over the ropes'.”

Britain orders probe into Muslim Brotherhood

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - British Prime Minister David Cameron has ordered an investigation into the Muslim Brotherhood over concerns that the group is planning radical activities from a base in London, his Downing Street office said Tuesday. The intelligence agencies MI5 and MI6 have been tasked to gather information on the philosophy and activities of the group after several leaders fled to London following the toppling of Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi last year. The probe would include an assessment of claims that the Islamist group was behind a suicide bus bombing that killed three South Korean tourists in Egypts south Sinai in February and several other attacks, The Times newspaper reported. The probe could reportedly lead to a ban on the Muslim Brotherhood in Britain, which is already outlawed in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The Muslim Brotherhood has risen in prominence in recent years but our understanding of the organisation -- its philosophy and values -- has not kept pace with this, a Downing Street spokesman said in a statement to AFP.Given the concerns now being expressed about the group and its alleged links to violent extremism, its absolutely right and prudent that we get a better handle of what the Brotherhood stands for, how they intend to achieve their aims and what that means for Britain. The review is being led by Britains ambassador to Saudi Arabia, John Jenkins.Egypts foreign ministry spokesman Badr Abdelatty welcomed the investigation, saying in a statement that he hoped the matter will be addressed with the necessary seriousness and attention. The Muslim Brotherhood did not immediately respond to a request for comment by AFP.But a spokesman was quoted by The Times as saying it was a religious obligation for any Muslim Brotherhood member to cooperate with the review and to respect British laws. The Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 and despite years of repression it remains the largest Islamic movement in the Middle East, having particularly returned to prominence during the Arab Spring.Morsi, who belongs to the Brotherhood, became Egypts first elected civilian president following the toppling of Hosni Mubarak in 2011, but he was ousted by the army last July after a single year in power. He is now facing three separate trials.Egypts military-installed government in December declared the Brotherhood a terrorist organisation. Saudi Arabia followed suit last month. In Egypt more than 1,400 people have been killed in street clashes and thousands imprisoned, including the Brotherhoods top leadership. A judge triggered a global outcry last month for sentencing 529 supporters of Morsi to death for rioting.Egyptian authorities have blamed the Brotherhood for a series of terror attacks, but a separate, Al-Qaeda-inspired group called Ansar Beit al-Maqdis claimed responsibility for the Sinai bus attack that the British are reportedly examining the Brotherhoods links to.- Possible but unlikely ban -The British government acted following reports that Brotherhood leaders had met in London last year to decide their response to the Egypt crisis, The Times said. They gathered in a flat above an Islamic charity office in the drab northwest London suburb of Cricklewood, the report said. The Times quoted officials as saying it was possible but unlikely that the investigation would lead to a ban, with some in the Foreign Office reportedly believing it would only serve to radicalise and drive members underground.London Mayor Boris Johnson said British counter-terrorism officers were monitoring radicalised individuals numbering in the low thousands but refused to give details about the Muslim Brotherhood investigation.Im afraid I cant give you any details about that investigation and nor would you expect me to, he told LBC radio.London has long played host to political exiles of all stripes from around the world. They include several Al-Qaeda members, Pakistani politicians such as current prime minister Nawaz Sharif, slain former premier Benazir Bhutto and ex-president Pervez Musharraf, plus several Russian oligarchs.

NATO sees no Russian troop pullout from Ukraine border

Posted:

BRUSSELS (AFP) - NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Tuesday said he could not confirm the withdrawal of Russian troops from near the Ukrainian border as announced by the Kremlin.Unfortunately I cannot confirm that Russia is withdrawing its troops; this is not what we have seen, Rasmussen told journalists ahead of a NATO foreign ministers meeting on the crisis in Ukraine.Ukraine and the United States have accused Russia of massing thousands of troops near the border and have expressed concern that Moscow intends to seize southeastern parts of Ukraine that are home to large populations of ethnic Russians, following the Crimea takeover.German Chancellor Angela Merkels office said Putin had personally informed her of the troop pullback in a telephone conversation on Monday, and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier called the move a small sign that the situation is becoming less tense.Ukraine also reported Monday that Russian troops were leaving the flashpoint area.NATO foreign ministers are meeting at the alliance headquarters in Brussels to forge a response to Russias annexation of Crimea last month. But as the talks began, NATO seemed to be stepping back from reinforcing military presence in countries bordering Russia, preferring for now to give more time to diplomacy.I think everybody realises that the best way forward is a political and diplomatic dialogue, Rasmussen said, though he added NATO was very determined to provide effective defence and protection of our allies. One counter-measure apparently off the table for now is the idea to set up permanent military bases in NATO countries bordering with Russia. The move would be highly controversial for Moscow, reversing an informal agreement made when NATO expanded east to include former Warsaw Pact countries that were eager to break away from years of Soviet domination. But Dutch foreign minister Frank Timmermans said that for now we dont need NATO troops at the border with Russia, adding there was no need for sudden moves. The cautious line could come as a disappointment to eastern NATO members, who were expected to argue for a tougher stance against Russia at the meeting. There is a rather wide consensus among the allies, even if eastern countries -- such as the Baltics and Poland -- wish NATO would adopt a more pronounced stand against Russia, a diplomat said. Before entering NATO headquarters for the talks, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said his country would welcome any forces on its territory. All members should enjoy the same level of security, he said.

Bilateral relations 'damaged' by Philippines UN ruling call: China

Posted:

MANILA (AFP) - China warned Tuesday that the Philippines has seriously damaged bilateral ties by asking the United Nations to rule in their favour in a maritime dispute.Manila at the weekend asked a UN tribunal to declare Beijings claims over most of the strategically significant South China Sea illegal, submitting nearly 4,000 pages of evidence to back its case.It argues that the Chinese stance contravenes the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and interferes with the Philippines sovereign rights to its continental shelf. What the Philippine side did seriously damaged bilateral relations with China, Charge daffaires Sun Xiangyang of the Chinese embassy in Manila said in a statement. We find it very hard to understand these moves of the Philippines and we are deeply disturbed by and concerned with the consequence of such moves. Both countries are signatories to UNCLOS, but Beijing argues that its provisions do not apply to the row.The embassy statement urged the Philippines to correct its mistake and come back to the right track of resolving the disputes through bilateral negotiations.China -- which is vastly more powerful than any of the several countries it has disputes with in the strategically significant waters -- prefers to negotiate with them individually, rather than in international forums.Apart from China, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam also claim parts of the sea.Suns comments followed a commentary in Peoples Daily, the official mouthpiece of the Communist Party, denouncing Manilas move. The act of the Philippine side is against the international law and the historical truth as well as against morality and basic rules of international relations, it said.Manila had provoked China by going to so-called international arbitration, a move that is both illegal and unreasonable and an act lacking credibility, it said. The Philippines attempted to solicit international sympathy through disguising itself as a small and weak country, the commentary said.Manila was attempting to legalise its invasion of Chinese islands through the arbitration, it added.- Provocative and destabilising -The invective from Chinas state-run media comes as the United States and Japan have rallied to the Philippines defence.Tokyo -- which is also embroiled in a bitter territorial row with Beijing -- issued a statement hailing Manilas move, which it said was aimed at peaceful settlement of disputes on the basis of international law.Such an action contributes to the maintenance and enhancement of the international order in the region based on the rule of law, the Japanese foreign ministry said.Meanwhile Washington, which is a treaty ally of Manila, sharply criticised an attempted Chinese blockade of a Philippine vessel that led to a dramatic two-hour standoff at the weekend. The move was a provocative and destabilising action, US State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters on Monday.Harfs statement triggered a stern retort from Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei, who maintained Tuesday that it is without any doubt that the Philippines is the provocateur and troublemaker.Hong also said that Philippine Ambassador to China Erlinda Basilio was summoned to hear Chinas strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the arbitration attempt. In the meeting, deputy foreign minister Liu Zhenmin asked the Philippine side to correct mistakes and return to the right track, Hong said.Philippine President Benigno Aquino vowed Monday to press ahead with the legal appeal. We are not here to challenge China, to provoke them into any action, but I do believe that they should recognise we also have the right to defend our own interests, he told reporters.

Voices of the popes: Vatican Radio puts its archive online

VATICAN CITY (AFP) - The voices of popes from as early as 1884 can be heard by the public after the digitalisation of 8,000 tapes from the Vatican Radios pontifical archives, the Vatican said Tuesday. The initiative was launched as part of preparations for the sainting of John Paul II and John XXIII (1958-63) on April 17, in the first double papal canonisation ceremony in Church history. This way, the popes remain among us thanks to their voices, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told journalists.Radio Vatican has been storing up its unique patrimony since it was set up under pope Pius XI in 1931, but it has also older recordings, such as Leo XIIIs Humanum Genus encyclical, which the pontiff recorded on a dictaphone in 1884.Some of the clips in the online collection capture historic moments, such as Pius XIIs speech in August 1939 calling for restraint on the eve of the Second World War, saying The danger is imminent, but there is still time. Nothing is lost with peace, all can be lost with warPeople can listen to John XXIIIs impromptu 1962 Speech to the Moon in St. Peters Square, where he told the masses: When you head home, find your children. Hug and kiss your children and tell them This is the hug and kiss of the Pope. There are also Paul VIs anguished words following the kidnapping and murder of Italian prime minister Aldo Moro in May 1978, culminating in his public address to God: You did not grant our plea for the safety of Aldo Moro, of this good and gentle man... who was my friend.John Paul IIs emotionally-charged attack in 1993 on the mafias culture of death following a spate of high-profile killings can be listened to again, as can Benedict XVIs 2013 resignation speech, where he said he will simply be a pilgrim starting the last phase of his pilgrimage on this earth.
