17 dead in Iraq violence as elections loom

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Violence across Iraq killed 17 people Friday while security forces killed another 15 militants in clashes south of Baghdad, the latest in a surge of bloodshed ahead of parliamentary elections. The shootings and bombings, which also wounded dozens more, came with campaigning in full swing for the April 30 election and with violence at its highest level since 2008.The unrest has been principally driven by anger in the Sunni Arab community over alleged mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led government and security forces, as well as a spillover from the civil war in neighbouring Syria.Apart from the capital, Friday's violence struck in predominantly Sunni areas of Nineveh, Salaheddin and Kirkuk provinces to the north, and in Anbar to the west, while security forces engaged in a firefight with insurgents south of Baghdad, security and medical officials said. The clashes, which broke out during attempted raids of militant strongholds in Yusifiyah, Latifiyah and Jurf al-Sakhr, left 15 militants dead, while three members of the security forces were also killed.Elsewhere, a suicide bomber killed an army captain and his son when he blew himself up on the doorstep of the officer's home in Baiji, while bombings in Baghdad and in the northern provinces killed six others.Gunmen also shot dead two anti-Al Qaeda militiamen in Salaheddin's capital Tikrit. In conflict-hit Anbar, army shelling of the militant-held town of Fallujah killed two people, while clashes between security forces and anti-government fighters in provincial capital Ramadi left two policemen dead.Insurgents overran Fallujah and parts of Ramadi earlier this year. While security forces have managed to wrest back control of most of Ramadi, Fallujah has been out of government control for about three months.Militants also destroyed a bridge just north of the capital by setting off several bombs along it.More than 2,300 people have been killed in Iraq so far this year, according to an AFP tally.Diplomats have urged the government to reach out to the disaffected Sunni minority to undercut support for militancy. But with the election looming, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and other Shiite leaders have been loath to be seen to make concessions.Near-daily bloodshed is part of a long list of voter concerns that also include lengthy power cuts, poor wastewater treatment, rampant corruption and high unemployment.

12 killed in 'Qaeda attack': Yemeni army

ADEN (AFP) - A suspected Al Qaeda attack on an army post in Hadramawt province in southeast Yemen on Friday killed eight soldiers and four militants, military and local sources said. The attackers approached the position on board several vehicles and opened fire on the soldiers with different types of weapons, killing eight and wounding 11 more, the military source told AFP.The officer in command of the position was among the dead.He said the militants targeted a post known as Hanine in the area of Al-Qatn town in the centre of the vast semi-desert province.Military reinforcements sent to the area came under fire from the militants and an unknown number were wounded, a local administration official said.He said four militants were killed and several wounded, but the attackers took their dead and wounded with them when they withdrew.Friday's was the second major attack by militants on Yemeni troops army in three days.On Thursday, Al Qaeda claimed a brazen assault on an army headquarters in a highly secure area of Aden the previous day.Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) is viewed by Washington as the deadliest franchise in the extremist network, and is the target of frequent US drone attacks.AQAP said Wednesday's attack on the Aden military complex killed nearly 50 soldiers and was part of its campaign to target the joint operation rooms that manage the US drones in the country.A security official gave a death toll of six soldiers, three civilians, 10 assailants and a suicide bomber from that attack.

Life slowly returns to normal in quake-hit Chile

IQUIQUE (AFP) - Life was gradually returning to normal in northern Chile on Friday, with power restored to a majority of homes that lost electricity during this weeks powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake.Tuesdays earthquake killed six people and forced thousands to evacuate, especially in coastal areas vulnerable to flooding and tsunamis.A seventh fatality was attributed to the earthquake on Friday when a six-day-old baby of a family made homeless in the disaster died from cardiac arrest.Officials from regional utilities said power and other basic services were well on the way to being fully restored across the worst-hit areas. Water was also running again in many areas that had seen disruptions.General Miguel Alfonso, head of the disaster zone that is centred on the coastal city of Iquique, said that he expected normal food and energy distribution will be possible within about three weeks.A series of smaller, but still powerful quakes have shaken the country since Tuesday -- including a 7.6-magnitude tremor on Wednesday that forced thousands to flee their homes again. Many families still slept outside Thursday into Friday, and were likely to continue to do so, as aftershocks continue to rattle the country. The hardest-hit victims from Tuesdays quake were inhabitants of desert towns and villages who reside in the highland plateaus where water sometimes is already scarce. The fragile construction of dwellings in these areas puts residents at greater risk from building collapse during a quake, officials said.President Michelle Bachelets new government, meanwhile, issued a warning to those seeking to profit from the misfortune, vowing aggressive prosecution against speculators.Bachelet also has deployed troops to deter looting, but her government said no arrests had been made as of early Friday.Residents of Iquique, a city of some 180,000 people which was hardest hit by the quake, had complained of price gouging as they tried to buy water and staple food products. The earthquake hit Chile just weeks after Bachelet began her second term in office. The political stakes were regarded as particularly high because of missteps during her first administrations response to an 8.8-magnitude quake in 2010.That disaster left more than 500 people dead, and resulted in some $30 million in damages.Bachelet this week re-ordered her calendar to devote full attention to this weeks quake, the first major challenge of her new adminstration. She returned on Thursday to Santiago after surveying the quake zone, holding meetings with her cabinet to discuss what steps should be taken next in the relief and rebuilding effort. The disaster has led her to push to one side, for now, her ambitious agenda of economic and educational reform. It could be that some areas will need a bit more time because we have to focus our efforts on repair and rebuilding, she said.Overall damage from the quake was less extensive than initially feared, proving the benefits of stringent construction standards and exhaustive disaster preparedness measures in the earthquake-prone nation. Those standards were put in place after a massive 9.5-magnitude quake in 1960 killed thousands of Chileans and left huge swaths of the country in ruins.By contrast, much of this weeks earthquake damage was limited to some 2,500 homes outside of Iquique, according to officials.

Five dead as landslide derails Indonesian train

JAKARTA (AFP) - A landslide triggered by heavy rain derailed a train as it travelled through Indonesias main island of Java on Friday, leaving five people dead, an official said. There were about 250 passengers on the train as it travelled from the city of Bandung in the west of Java to Malang in the east. The land slipped away from under the tracks as the train was passing through the city of Tasikmalaya at 6:30 pm (1130 GMT), said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.Three of the trains eight carriages derailed and five people were killed, he said.Three bodies have been evacuated and the two other bodies remain trapped. We are in the process of evacuating them, he said. The other people on board the train were transferred to other forms of transport, said Nugroho. He did not have information on whether anyone else was injured.Train accidents are common on Indonesias ageing and poorly maintained railroad network. Landslides and floods occur frequently during the archipelagos six-month rainy season.

Tennis: Bouchard topples Jankovic to reach semis

Posted:

CHARLESTON (AFP) - Sixth-seeded Eugenie Bouchard notched one of the biggest wins of her career Friday, reaching the semi-finals of the WTA Family Circle Cup by toppling world number eight Jelena Jankovic. The 20-year-old Canadian outlasted former world number one Jankovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in a rematch from last year's quarter-finals at this green claycourt event.Jankovic won that one, but has now lost two out of three matches against rising star Bouchard.I knew in the second set my game wasn't where I wanted it to be, Bouchard said.I think she did a good job of stepping in and controlling ... I was really on the run. And that's fine, but that's not where I want to be most of the time. I needed to get back to my game.Bouchard will next face fourteenth-seeded Andrea Petkovic, who surprised ninth-seeded Lucie Safarova in another three-setter 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.Bouchard put on a dazzling display of foot movement and precision returns to throw Jankovic off her game. She blasted two aces and won 65 percent of her first-serve points in the two hour and two minute match at the claycourt tournament. She's very solid, said Jankovic of Bouchard. She stays so low and takes your balls so early off the ground, so even if you hit hard, she just picks them up so easily and kind of directs them. That's her biggest strength, that she can absorb someone's ball and just use it.This is Bouchard's second semi-final of the year after reaching the semis of the Australian Open.Bouchard has three wins over top 10 players prior to this but never a number eight. She beat number nine Samantha Stosur in Charleston last year, then-10th-ranked Jankovic in Japan last year and earlier this year she upset number 10 Sara Errani in Indian Wells.Bouchard has shot up the rankings in the past year. The world number 20 was ranked 114th when she lost at this event to Jankovic in 2013.Jankovic rallied in the second set after Bouchard broke the Serb to take a 4-3 lead. Jankovic then won four straight games to force a third set.I didn't really think about how I was up a break in the second, because it was in the past, and I had to move forward, Bouchard said.Jankovic, who won this event in 2007, had one double fault and won just seven of 19 points on her second serve.I started well, but then I dropped a level, and I felt a little bit flat, especially after 3-3 in the first set, Jankovic said. I lost a couple of games in a row and let her take control of the match.Bouchard advanced to the quarter-finals by beating former world number one Venus Williams 7-6 (8/6), 2-6, 6-4.

Tennis: Federer pulls Swiss level after Wawrinka shock

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Roger Federer saved Stanislas Wawrinka's blushes after the Australian Open champion suffered a shock defeat to unheralded Kazakh Andrey Golubev in the Davis Cup quarter-finals on Friday. The world number three was stunned 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7/5) by 64th ranked Golubev as Kazakhstan took an early 1-0 lead over the Swiss in Geneva. But 17-time Grand Slam winner Federer then stormed to a straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win over Mikhail Kukushkin to level the tie.Golubev's victory, achieved in just under three and a quarter hours, revived bad memories for Wawrinka who lost both his matches -- a singles and a doubles rubber -- in a 5-0 whitewash victory for Kazakhstan over Switzerland in Astana in 2010.I know you're going to consult all the sports psychologists to find out why I lost to Golubev, said Wawrinka wryly. It came down to a few points that made the difference, which he was able to play freely. An understated Golubev said after one of his biggest career wins: It was a great match I think for me.The key was to try and be aggressive and not to give him too much time. I think I did good.Federer, the world number four, kept his cool to record a second stright-sets win over 56th-ranked Kukushkin in as many meetings, having beaten the Kazakh in the first round of Wimbledon in 2011.It was important to stay calm. I was well concentrated, felt good in my legs and served well, said Federer.Title-holders Czech Republic took a 2-0 lead over Japan in Tokyo.Despite missing world number five Tomas Berdych, Radek Stepanek and Lukas Rosol claimed battling victories over a weakened Japan team, who are without talisman Kei Nishikori due to injury while Go Soeda has a virus.Stepanek beat Tatsuma Ito 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 6-1, 7-5 in the opening rubber while Rosol then overcame Taro Daniel 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-2.I'm very happy to be at 2-0, Czech captain Jaroslav Navratil told reporters. They had nothing to lose and in the end of both matches we were a little bit lucky.Stepanek was in trouble early on against Ito and needed to make a diving volley to avoid going down two sets to love. But having won the second set tie-break, the world 47 took control against an opponent ranked almost 100 places lower than him.Rosol blew a two-set lead against a player ranked 150 places below him before pulling it together to win his first ever five-set match.Italy took a 1-0 lead over Great Britain in Naples as clay-court specialist Fabio Fognini overcame a disjointed start to beat James Ward 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.After a two-hour rain delay, Fognini took his time to get into his stride before eventually running away with it.Andy Murray looked on course to bring Britain level, though, when bad light stopped play as he led Andreas Seppi 6-4, 5-5.However, the world number eight had to battle back from a break down in the second set and then save four break points at 5-4 to ensure the 34th-ranked Seppi didn't level the match at a set-all.In the other quarter-final, France had a disastrous start against a weak Germany, losing both the opening rubbers in Nancy.Despite missing their top six ranked players, Germany saw the world number 96 Tobias Kamke beat Julien Benneteau, the 50th-ranked player, 7-6 (10/8), 6-3, 6-2.Worse was to follow for the hosts when 12th ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lost 5-7, 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 7-6 (10/8), 8-6 to the world nbumber 119, Peter Gojowczyk -- only ranked 10 in Germany.

Football: Injured Rooney a doubt for Bayern showdown

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Wayne Rooney is a major doubt for Manchester United's Champions League showdown against Bayern Munich after being ruled out of Saturday's clash at Newcastle with a toe injury.Rooney sustained the bruised toe during the second half of United's 1-1 draw against holders Bayern in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday. It was hoped Rooney would recover in time to lead the United attack at St James' Park, but boss David Moyes has revealed the injury is yet to respond to treatment and the England striker is now set to go for a scan to see if there is further damage.Wayne's got a badly bruised toe, Moyes told MUTV on Friday. He picked it up in the game the other night.Whether we were going to play him or rest him, it doesn't matter. He's got a terrible toe and not only will it be a problem for this game, it could be a problem for the Munich game as well on Wednesday. So we need to monitor it.We'll get him treatment all over the weekend and see if we can speed it up.Rooney's absence against Bayern would be a massive blow to United's hopes of progressing to the semi-finals as they are already without Dutch striker Robin van Persie, who has been hit by a knee problem. With five goals in six games last month, Rooney has been in fine form of late, but now the likes of Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck may well have to step up to the plate in Munich.Moyes has suffered bad luck with injuries throughout his first season in charge, but he refused to complain about this latest setback. It's football. You look at what Wayne has done for us in the last league games for instance, he said. Against Aston Villa he scored two goals. There was a couple at West Ham including that special goal.

Golf: Horsey, Warren share lead in Cadiz gloom

Posted:

CADIZ (AFP) - England's David Horsey and Marc Warren of Scotland shared a one-shot lead at the Cadiz Open on Friday but 45 players were unable to finish their second rounds after play was halted due to bad light.A lengthy delay for rain on Thursday had already meant half the field had to complete their first rounds in the morning and the knock-on effect played further havoc with the schedule.Warren, who had completed a level par 72 in the delayed first round, then went out and fired 67 to set the clubhouse target at five under par.Horsey was four under par for his round with three holes remaining when play was halted for the day.My round didn't finish yesterday so I had to come back and play seven holes this morning and I played ok, said 33-year-old Warren. At the start of the second round I struggled a bit with concentration, but once I got it going I played really good -- my long game was excellent, short game was good. I think I got the best out of my round today.Today and yesterday's conditions were pretty similar, obviously without the rain. The wind is going to stay pretty strong and it's going to be tough for the guys playing this afternoon.Horsey bogeyed the first two holes of his second round, but fought back with six birdies in ten holes from the fourth.Chile's Felipe Aguilar was tied for third with Bradley Dredge and Adrian Otaegui on four under following a round of 69.

Formula One: Hamilton, Rosberg keep Mercedes in league of their own

Posted:

MANAMA (AFP) - Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg hammered home Mercedes' early season dominance on Friday when they set the fastest times in both opening practice sessions for Sunday's floodlit Bahrain Grand Prix.Hamilton, the winner in Malaysia last weekend, clocked 1min 34.325sec in the second spell having also roared away to the leading time in the afternoon of 1min 37.502sec.World championship leader Rosberg, who won in Australia, was in second spot thanks to a time of 1min 37.733 in the first session and, just like his teammate, was then untroubled under the lights with a time of 1:34.690.Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, a three-time winner at the dusty Sakhir circuit, was third-fastest overall with 1:35.360, more than a second behind Hamilton.Sunday's race will start at 1500GMT and Hamilton said the drop in temperatures as the sun sets in the desert will keep the teams on their toes. The track temperature was 38-40 degrees (Celsius) and then this afternoon was a lot cooler, about ten degrees, so it's just really not trying to panic and react to the change, said Hamilton. We struggled a bit on the tyres as everyone did.Rosberg said he was looking forward to racing at night. It's spectacular. Even on track it's very impressive. It's good, especially for TV viewers. It's going to be great to watch, said the German star.Visibility-wise it's very similar to Singapore. It's a bit more difficult in the dark with the glare.Defending champions Red Bull, who have struggled with the new technical changes for the 2014 season, had toiled in the afternoon period with four-time champion Sebastian Vettel down in 10th place. His Australian teammate Daniel Ricciardo was in 14th place, but both men enjoyed a considerably stronger evening session.Ricciardo, who was disqualified in Australia and failed to finish in Malaysia, took the fourth fastest spot overall on 1:35.433 while Vettel edged up to seventh, 1.281sec behind 2008 world champion Hamilton. It was a solid day for us and we didn't have any problems with the car. We're still learning a lot in terms of reliability and car set up, so it's important to do laps and not to have any problems, said Vettel.Alonso said that racing at night added to the challenge in the desert. After many daytime races, it was really strange to be running here in the dark, even if it was not very different to the other night time races, so we just have to get used to it, said the Spaniard. From this aspect, today was very useful to learn about the behaviour of the tyres and the car.Felipe Massa, the Brazilian with two career wins in Bahrain during his Ferrari days, was the top Williams performer. His time of 1:35.442 was good enough for fifth place with 2009 world champion Jenson Button, taking part in his 250th Grand Prix, sealing sixth fastest in the leading McLaren in 1:35.528.After Vettel, the top 10 was completed by Russia's Daniil Kvyat in a Toro Rosso, Denmark's Kevin Magnussen in the McLaren and Force India's Sergio Perez.Force India's Nico Hulkenberg, who had been fourth quickest in the afternoon, slipped back to 13th in the evening. The Lotus duo of Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean were only 17th and 18th respectively while Marussia and Caterham filled the last four spots.

Oil prices rise on jobs report, low Libya output

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices advanced Friday due to a solid US jobs report and continued doubt about the prospects for a full recovery of Libyan exports.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for May delivery rose 85 cents to finish at $101.14 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.European benchmark Brent oil for May delivery increased 57 cents to $106.72 a barrel in London. The US Department of Labor reported the US economy added 192,000 jobs in March, essentially meeting expectations and suggesting a continuation of the trend of slow but steady improvement in the labor market.Gene McGillian, a broker and analyst at Tradition Energy, said the jobs report, which also included an upward revision to the estimate for jobs added in January and February, created some positive sentiment.Traders also continue to doubt when Libyan exports will be restored to normal levels after a months-long blockade of key oil terminals due to a dispute between the central government and federalist leaders. The consultancy Eurasia Group rated a lasting recovery to the Libyan exports highly unlikely due to the dynamics of the dispute.McGillian expects the US oil contract to continue to pivot around $100 given the supply-and-demand fundamentals.

Dollar mixed following US jobs report

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar had a mixed day Friday after a US jobs report suggested the Federal Reserve is unlikely to hasten its timetable for tightening monetary policy.Near 2230 GMT, the dollar fell to 103.26 yen from 103.94 Thursday. The euro bought $1.3704, down slightly from $1.3717.The euro fell to 141.50 yen from 142.61.Heading into Friday, analysts had predicted the dollar would rally if the US Department of Labor report showed the addition of more than 225,000 jobs in March, but retreat if the figure came in below 150,000.Instead, the report showed the US economy added 192,000 jobs in March, missing analyst expectations slightly and not suggesting a dramatic speeding up of the recovery. If there were concerns that a strong labor print compounded by further signs of growing wage pressure would accelerate the Federal Reserves policy tightening cycle, fear no more, said Christopher Vecchio, an analyst at DailyFX.David Song, another analyst at DailyFX, said the dollar could be in for more weakness against the yen if the Bank of Japan continues to resist more aggressive stimulus. The BoJ is widely expected to preserve its current policy at the April 8 meeting as Governor Haruhiko Kuroda retains an upbeat tone for the Japanese economy, Song wrote.Among other currency pairs, the British pound declined to $1.6578 from $1.6597.The dollar rose to 0.8918 Swiss franc from 0.8909.
