Football: Balotelli ends goal drought to sink Spurs, Arsenal go fourth

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Mario Balotelli finally scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool to seal a dramatic 3-2 win over Tottenham, while Arsenal moved up to fourth place with a 2-1 victory against Leicester on Tuesday.Balotelli has endured a miserable time at Anfield since his pre-season move from AC Milan, but in his 13th league appearance for the Reds he picked the perfect moment to break his goal drought with an 83rd minute winner after coming off the bench. The Italian striker had only scored twice previously for Liverpool, with his last coming against Swansea in the League Cup in October.Balotellis headline-grabbing intervention provided a fitting finale to an entertaining encounter which saw Liverpool lead through Lazar Markovics 15th minute goal before in-form Tottenham forward Harry Kane continued his hot streak with a 26th minute equaliser to take his goal tally for the season to 23.Just hours after the Premier League announced a staggering 70 per cent increase in the value of its British television rights for the 2016-19 seasons, with Sky and BT Sports paying a combined 5.1 billion pounds ($7.8 billion, 6.9 billion euros) to show games, this was a thriller to justify that huge outlay.Steven Gerrards 53rd minute penalty, awarded for Danny Roses trip on Daniel Sturridge, restored Liverpools lead before Mousa Dembele bundled in Kanes cross eight minutes later. That set the stage for Balotelli, who replaced Sturridge in the 74th minute and netted nine minutes later when he tapped-in Adam Lallanas cross.Brendan Rodgers side stay seventh but move within one point of sixth placed Tottenham in the battle to qualify for the Champions League via a top-four finish.Arsenal stole a march on their top-four rivals with an edgy success against bottom of the table Leicester at the Emirates Stadium.Leicester manager Nigel Pearson remained in charge despite reports of his dismissal on Sunday, 24 hours after he grabbed Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur around the throat on the touchline during his sides 1-0 defeat. But it was his Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger who was celebrating when French defender Laurent Koscielny swept home from Mesut Ozils corner in the 27th minute.Theo Walcott doubled Arsenals lead in the 41st minute when he finished off the rebound after Leicester goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer had parried Ozils shot.Leicesters club record signing Andrej Kramaric netted in the 61st minute with his first goal since joining the Foxes, the 9 pounds million signing lashing home from a Riyad Mahrez cross, but Arsenal survived late pressure to climb above Manchester United, who can reclaim fourth with a win against Burnley on Wednesday.Hull climbed out of the relegation zone at Aston Villas expense with a crucial 2-0 win at the KC Stadium.Steve Bruces side had the worst record at home in the league this season with just nine points from 11 games. But they made a perfect start when Dame NDoye picked out Nikica Jelavic in the 22nd minute and the Croatian striker fired in a shot that took a big deflection off Ciaran Clark and looped in.With irate Villa fans holding up a banner calling for boss Paul Lambert to be sacked, their team fell further behind in the 74th minute when NDoye scored his first Hull goal after his initial effort was saved.

QPR claim first away win of Premier League season

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - QPR moved out of the Premier League relegation zone and dragged Sunderland into trouble with a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday, their first away win of the season.First-half goals from midfielder Leroy Fer and striker Bobby Zamora were enough for Rangers, who put the turmoil of Harry Redknapps departure as manager behind them. They moved out of the drop zone on goal difference thanks to Aston Villas defeat, but could fall a place if Burnley get a point against Manchester United on Wednesday while hosts Sunderland are just two points above the bottom three. It was the struggling Hoops who made much the quicker start, pinning the home team in their own half and firing off a series of shots at Costel Pantilimons goal.So it came as no suprise when the London club took a 17th minute lead, Netherlands international Fer heading powerfully past the Sunderland stopper following a pinpoint cross from winger Matt Phillips.Remarkably, it was the first time QPR had been leading away from home all season.Rangers continued to press for a second, but breathed a sigh of relief when full-back Yun Suk-young was adjudged not to have handled the ball in the penalty area despite claims from Sunderland players and fans.Fer nearly claimed his second of the night on tha half-hour, but his close-range effort hit the post and rolled along the goal-line.Sunderland striker Conor Wickham was the next man to be denied by the goal-frame, his header superbly saved by QPR keeper Robert Green. But it was a moment of class from Zamora that meant the visitors went into the break with a two-goal lead, swivelling and firing a half-volley from the edge of the box past a rooted Pantilimon.Rangers began the second-half in confident manner, and limited the Black Cats to half-chances and set-pieces.But the home team began to pose more of a threat as the half wore on, and former England keeper Green was on superb form to deny Jermain Defoe and substitute Ricky Alvarez.Despite visibly tiring as the final whistle loomed, Rangers held on for a priceless victory.

Dollar advances as euro braces for key Greece meeting

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar Tuesday advanced against the euro and the yen while traders girded for euro volatility on the eve of key Greek debt talks. The dollar, which retreated Monday due to profit taking, resumed its upward climb following Fridays buoyant US jobs report.Market confidence has struggled of late amid worries about Greeces debt dilemma, instability in Ukraine and mounting signs of slowing growth in China, said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions. However, the US remains a bright spot for the world economy, particularly after data last week showed faster-than-expected hiring.Fridays labor market report showed the US added a surprisingly robust 257,000 jobs in January and the prior two months job gains were revised higher.Manimbo said the report intensified a spotlight on the Federal Reserve, with expectations on the rise for the bank to lift borrowing rates this year.Christopher Vecchio, currency analyst at DailyFX, said the euro could see bumpy trade with Wednesdays emergency meeting of eurozone finance ministers in Brussels as Greece seeks to renegotiate its international bailout. Not dissimilar from the pre-ECB leaks at the end of January, price over the next 24-hours is probably very susceptible to rumors and headlines, Vecchio said.

Obama presses Putin to strike Ukraine peace deal

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to discuss escalating violence in eastern Ukraine, urging him to embrace a negotiated solution.Expressing unease at Russias ongoing support for separatists in Ukraine, Obama warned that the failure of upcoming peace talks would lead to more pain for Russia.During the call Obama underscored the importance of President Putin seizing the opportunity presented by the ongoing discussions between Russia, France, Germany and Ukraine to reach a peaceful resolution, the White House said.If Russia continues its aggressive actions in Ukraine, including by sending troops, weapons, and financing to support the separatists, the costs for Russia will rise.Obama has dangled the prospect of further sanctions against Russia and US arms being sent to the Ukrainian government if talks fail.A four-nation peace summit is planned for Wednesday in Minsk. The United States has voiced skepticism about Putins sincerity in negotiating.A previous agreement, signed in the Belarusian capital Minsk in September, has been largely ignored by Russia. The White House on Tuesday said that the previous Minsk agreement must be the basis for any new deal.Key points of that deal include withdrawing all troops and weapons from eastern Ukraine, allowing effective international monitoring of the international border and freeing hostages, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. While were supportive of continuing diplomatic conversations, whats most important is for both sides to come to the table ready to not just make commitments, but live up to them, said Earnest.Obama also spoke to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, offering condolences for the loss of Ukrainian life.A devastating rocket strike on Kievs military headquarters in the east killed at least 37 people on Tuesday. The president underlined the commitment of the United States to work with our international partners to provide the financial support Ukraine needs as it continues to undertake essential reforms, the White House said.

US denies 'coordinating' Syria air strikes with Assad

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States on Tuesday denied that it was coordinating air strikes either directly or indirectly with the Syrian regime against Islamic militants and renewed calls for President Bashar al-Assad to go.In an interview with the BBC, Assad said Damascus was being informed about the US-led coalition air strikes against the Islamic State group.Assad said the messages were conveyed through third parties, including neighboring Iraq, where Washington and Western allies are also carrying out strikes against IS.Were not communicating or coordinating our military operations with the Assad regime. Were not doing it directly. Were not doing it indirectly, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters. Before the strikes were launched in Syria in September, Washington did inform the Syrian regime directly of our intent to take action through our ambassador to the United Nations, recalled State Department spokeswoman Jan Psaki, repeating information given at the time.We did not request the regimes permission. We did not coordinate our actions with the Syrian government, she said.We did not provide advance notifications to the Syrians at a military level, nor give any indication of our timing on specific targets.Washington had also warned Damascus not to engage US aircraft. The US position remains that Assad has lost all legitimacy and must go .. There cannot be a stable inclusive Syria under Assads leadership, Psaki added. She also insisted that his interview with the BBC had to be taken with a grain of salt.In the same interview, he denied the use of barrel bombs, chlorine and also the indiscriminate killing of his own people, Psaki said.

Niger declares state of emergency in region attacked by Boko Haram

Posted:

NIAMEY (AFP) - Nigers government on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in the Diffa region along the border with Nigeria, which has been attacked repeatedly by Boko Haram in recent days. The announcement came after the countrys defence minister raised the alarm over the situation in Diffa, where he said residents were fleeing out of fears of further violence. The state of emergency is proclaimed in the Diffa region for a period of 15 days, a statement read on state radio said. The measure will grant increased powers to security forces, including to carry out searches.Niger had mostly been spared the violence in the six-year Boko Haram insurgency which has centred in neighbouring northeastern Nigeria, but the Islamists have attacked the country several times since last week. One such incident involved an attack by a female suicide bomber on Monday, killing at least six people and wounding several others, a military report said. The recent attacks came in the run up to a vote by Nigers parliament on Monday to send troops to Nigeria to join a regional fight against Boko Haram. Nigers parliament voted unanimously to contribute 750 troops.A journalist based in the Diffa area said businesses, government offices and schools were closed on Tuesday as residents sought to flee. Some 125,000 refugees have fled to southeast Niger. The UN food agency on Tuesday voiced concern for the plight of the refugees. The World Food Programme is particularly concerned by the attacks in the north of Nigeria which are spreading to Niger, forcing thousands of people to flee, WFP spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said.Byrs stressed the appalling situation in which refugees are living in the Diffa region, where the population has almost doubled, due to refugees from Nigeria, and food stocks are becoming scarce. On Saturday, Nigeria and its neighbours -- Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Benin -- agreed to muster 8,700 troops, police and civilians for a wider, African Union-backed force against Boko Haram. The Boko Haram conflict has killed more than 13,000 people since 2009.

Weak IEA outlook, US glut worries sink oil prices

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices slumped Tuesday after the International Energy Agency issued a downbeat global market outlook and traders braced for a further increase in record US crude-oil stockpiles.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for March delivery tumbled $2.84 to close at $50.02 a barrel. The global benchmark, Brent North Sea crude for March, settled at $56.43 a barrel in London trade, down $1.91 from Mondays closing level.Citing a major shakeup in the oil markets, the IEA said in its five-year forecast that prices will recover from current levels but remain considerably below the $100-plus per barrel price of last June. The global oil market looks set to begin a new chapter of its history, with markedly changing demand dynamics, sweeping shifts in crude trade and product supply, and dramatically different roles for OPEC and non-OPEC producers in regulating upstream supply, the IEA said.It added that it sees market rebalancing occurring relatively swiftly, with increases in inventories halting around mid-year and the market tightening.Though the IEA trimmed its long-term supply forecasts, it cut its demand estimates, too, and warned that lower oil prices will not necessarily boost demand growth as strongly as it might be expected, said Fawad Razaqzada at Forex.com trading group.Kyle Cooper at IAF Advisors said the bearish IEA report showed the rebalancing of crude is not going to get solved in the next couple of months.Cooper said the market also was preparing for very, very large crude and petroleum builds in the United States in the next few weeks. The US Department of Energys weekly petroleum report due Wednesday is expected to show a 3.6 million barrel increase in crude stockpiles, according to a Bloomberg News analyst poll.At more than 413 million barrels, US crude stocks are already at their highest level on record.US oil production is near its all-time highs, thanks to a boom in shale production. The DoE reported Tuesday that production averaged 9.2 million barrels per day in January. It predicted US crude output would rise to 9.3 million barrels a day in 2015 and 9.5 million in 2016.
