US senators urge Kerry to tighten sanctions on Russia

WASHINGTON: (AP) - A bipartisan group of senators Friday called on Secretary of State John Kerry to tighten economic sanctions on Russia and provide defensive weapons to Ukraine after Russian-backed rebels breached this months cease- fire agreement and seized the Ukrainian town of Debaltseve.The senators, including No. 2 Senate Democrat Dick Durbin and Armed Services Committee Republican Chairman John McCain, told Kerry in a letter that it is time to provide defensive weapons to Ukraine and to consider imposing additional sanctions and penalties that will increase the cost of Putins actions.The seizure of Debaltseve this week came despite a cease-fire agreement reached between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko sealed a week ago. The senators see the cease-fire as failing, though France and Germany, which brokered the accord, hope to salvage it.The war in eastern Ukraine has killed more than 5,600 people and forced over a million to flee their homes since fighting began in April, a month after Russia annexed the mostly Russian-speaking Crimean Peninsula. Putin denies arming the rebels.Putins duplicity regarding these agreements has been matched only by his delusional denials of Russian involvement in eastern Ukraine, the senators wrote.We can only conclude that in the absence of greater Western support for Ukrainian forces, a Russian-imposed military outcome will continue to unfold in Ukraine, they said.The Senate letter was signed by six Republicans and four Democrats.

Player pleads guilty in fatal punch to US soccer referee

DETROIT: (AP) - A recreational soccer player who delivered one punch to a referee that killed the man pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter Friday in a deal with prosecutors that calls for him to serve up to 15 years in prison.Bassel Saad, 36, acknowledged in a Detroit courtroom that he struck John Bieniewicz during a game last summer at a Livonia park. Bieniewicz died two days later. Saad initially was charged with second-degree murder and had been scheduled to stand trial beginning Monday.The auto mechanic will be sentenced March 13. Under the plea deal, he could be sentenced from eight to 15 years in prison. He would have faced up to life in prison if convicted as charged.Because Saad is not a U.S. citizen, he also could be deported.Defense lawyer Cyril Hall who added his client is very, very remorseful.Bieniewicz, 44, left behind a wife and two sons.Kris Bieniewicz, the referees wife, attended Fridays hearing, but did not speak to reporters afterward.She told The Associated Press earlier this week that she hoped Saad never sees the light of day.

Prosecutor calls for ex-French minister's acquittal in Bettencourt case

BORDEAUX (AFP) - A French prosecutor on Friday called for former budget minister Eric Woerth to be acquitted of stolen property charges in a trial sparked by the alleged exploitation of Frances richest woman Liliane Bettencourt.There are no accusations and no evidence sufficient to prove his guilt, deputy prosecutor Gerard Aldige said, referring to accusations that Woerth used some of the LOreal heiresss fortune to finance Nicolas Sarkozys 2007 presidential campaign.While giving evidence on February 10 in the trial in the southwest city of Bordeaux, Woerth denied taking roughly 50,000 euros ($56,000) from Patrice de Maistre, who managed Bettencourts estate.De Maistre, who is also on trial, has been accused of taking advantage of the 92-year-old heiress in getting her to hand over envelopes of cash to members of Sarkozys conservative UMP party.I know what I did, I know what I didnt do, testified Woerth, a UMP member and budget minister from 2007-2010.I did not receive cash from Mister de Maistre to finance this campaign or anything else.The affair tarnished the latter half of Sarkozys presidency and when he lost the 2012 election, he was placed under formal investigation for illegal campaign financing and taking advantage of Bettencourt.However, the charges against Sarkozy were dropped in October 2013 due to lack of evidence, but he has since been tied to or investigated in several other cases.The prosecutor sought the maximum penalty of three years behind bars for Francois-Marie Banier, a 67-year-old artist who is godfather to Johnny Depps daughter.He is suspected of having taken advantage of the heiress, who showered him with gifts such as paintings by Picasso and Matisse, and millions of euros in cash.Aldige also called for 18 months in prison for de Maistre.

Doctor of PIMS Hospital was shot from 30 feet: Investigation report

ISLAMABAD (Dunya news) – The initial investigation report of murder of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital’s Dr Shahid Nawaz was received by Dunya news on Friday. According to the initial report, the doctor of PIMS hospital was shot from a distance of 20-30 feet. Only a single bullet was fired from the gun. The bullet created a 4 centimeter wide crack in his forehead. The bullet pierced through to back of the brain which severely affected the brain. Clotting of blood was also a reason for Nawaz’s death. The report suggests that no blood was found from the scene of the crime. This suggests that the shooter was trained. The event is also being viewed as an incident of target killing.According to the details, the report’s suggestion of firing distance has created suspicion about the statements given by the doctor’s driver and eyewitnesses. Interrogation of the driver has also been decided.The investigation report has revealed that the power cable of a security camera fitted in the hospital was also plugged out before the attack. The other security camera was then rendered useless. Due to this, Dr Shahid’s footage of going into the room was recorded but no such footage exists of his attack.

Woman in Sweden denies locking up daughters 'for years'

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - A woman arrested in Sweden on suspicion of locking up her three daughters for several years was released from custody Friday.Police broke into the apartment and arrested the 59-year-old woman in the southern town of Bromoella Thursday, saying she had restricted her childrens freedom for quite a few years.The daughters have been detained against their will but the question is whether it is punishable under the law, prosecutor Paar Andersson told public broadcaster SVT.She did not lock them in, it was psychological coercion, some sort of lock-in effect.According to tabloid Expressen, one of the now adult children -- reportedly in their 20s and early 30s -- briefly left the small two-room apartment and told a neighbour she had been locked up for over a decade.The probe is still ongoing and the district court in Kristianstad said the woman was still under investigation.My client denies any crime. She has not in any way limited the plaintiffs movements, her lawyer Thomas Ljungdahl told AFP.An eyewitness to the arrest told newspaper Aftonbladet that one of the daughters was barely able to walk and had to be helped out of the apartment.The three adult women (daughters) have been taken in by social services, said police spokeswoman Ewa-Gun Westford.The woman reportedly moved her daughters around the country for almost 20 years in an effort to keep them away from their father following a divorce.An education official in the northern ski resort town of Aare told Aftonbladet that they did not attend school despite being registered as living in the area for a decade from 2001.It appears that she had prevented the children from going to school in the past, Westford confirmed to AFP.We have to go back in time now and find out where they have been staying and under what circumstances.

BRASLIA (AFP) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Friday refused to accept the credentials of the Indonesian ambassador to demonstrate her anger at last months execution of a Brazilian citizen for drug smuggling.We think it is important that there is an evolution in the situation in order to clarify the state of Indonesias relations with Brazil, Rousseff said as she received the credentials of ambassadors from five other countries.Rousseff said clearance for Indonesias representative would be held up a little with Brasilia and Jakarta at loggerheads over the impending execution of a second Brazilian, Rodrigo Gularte, 42, on death row since 2004 for smuggling six kilos of cocaine into Indonesia in surf boards.Gulartes family have tried without success to obtain clemency for him, saying doctors have classed him as paranoid schizophrenic, which would normally see him transferred to a psychiatric facility. Brazilian media reported that a diplomat had passed a written request to the head of the prison asking for such a transfer.Jakarta has twice turned down appeals for clemency.Gulartes compatriot Marco Archer was executed by firing squad last month for drug smuggling despite a personal appeal from Rousseff for mercy.Archer was executed alongside five others convicted of drugs offenses, including five foreigners, in the first executions carried out under new President Joko Widodo.Rousseff warned then that bilateral relations would suffer as a result.The date for Gulartes execution is unclear. Jakarta said earlier Friday it was delaying the execution of two Australian drug smugglers by up to a month for technical reasons, backtracking on an earlier pledge to put the pair before the firing squad by the end of February.Widodo -- an ardent supporter of the death penalty -- has told reporters that carrying out capital punishment for drug trafficking is an issue of judicial sovereignty.

Faisalabad: Man killed by firing of person celebrating Basant

FAISALABAD (Dunya news) – A man was killed on Friday in Dhudi Wala area of Faislabad by firing of a person celebrating Basant. Kite flying has been banned in Punjab. But the ban was not paid any heed to in Faisalabad. The sky was filled with colorful kites while noise of the festivities was its peak. The youth in Mansoorabad, Madina Town, Peoples Colony and Nishatabad was pumped with the spirit of the festival to an extreme extent. Aerial firing was also carried out in some areas. 28 year old Mohammad Hussain standing on the roof top was struck by a bullet which proved to be a fatal injury.According to the details, the police did not reach the scene of the crime on time even after it was informed. It was only after Dunya news informed of the incident that Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the event. The police immediately came into action after CM’s notice.Police officials searched every house and arrested the culprit Mohammad Ali. A gun was confiscated from the suspect. Further suspects were also arrested in this regard.

UK police launch appeal to find Syria-bound schoolgirls

LONDON (AFP) - British anti-terror police on Friday made an unprecedented appeal to find three girls who they believe are travelling to join militants in Syria as part of what officers said was a growing trend.Richard Walton, head of the Metropolitan Polices Counter Terrorism Command, said he was extremely concerned for the wellbeing of the girls.Shamima Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 17, and a third 15-year-old girl who is not being named at the request of her family, left their London homes on Tuesday and boarded a flight for Istanbul.Police believe the three close friends, who all attend Bethnal Green Academy in east London, are following the example of one of their friends, who fled to join the Islamic State group in December.Theres clearly a lot of encouragement going on by various groups in Syria to try and entice out young people, both young boys and young girls, Walton told AFP.By definition its the vulnerable that are being enticed but these girls were not obviously vulnerable.Something, somewhere has happened to make them think its a good idea to go to Syria.Police believe that the three received support in planning the trip, but do not know the extent of their backing or if they have access to funding.An estimated 550 Western women have travelled to join the militants Iraq and Syria.Despite being banned from fighting, a study last month found that many are active propagandists for the cause on social media, celebrating the brutal violence of IS militants, acting as recruiting sergeants and even encouraging attacks abroad.The London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) report said that women in IS-ruled territory were expected to marry, keep house and bear children.
