Djokovic rolls into Indian Wells semi-finals

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Two-time champion Novak Djokovic cruised past an overmatched Julien Benneteau 6-1, 6-3 on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Indian Wells ATP Masters.Djokovic, the world number two and the highest seed left in the draw after the early exit of number one Rafael Nadal, didn't face a break point in the 68 minute encounter, although he insisted the match wasn't easy.I had to stay focused, said Djokovic, who won the title in the California desert in 2008 and 2011 but fell in the semi-finals the past two years.Today he made a lot of unforced errors. I tried to make the most of those opportunities when they were presented.Benneteau, playing just the second Masters 1000 quarter-final of his career, faced break points in all but his first service game and was broken twice in each set.The 32-year-old Frenchman's run to the quarters -- which included a second-round upset of 10th-ranked Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga -- was his best outing of a so-far difficult 2014. He had failed to go beyond the second round in six prior ATP tournaments this season and had dropped 30 places in the rankings to number 65 since the end of 2013.Djokovic, seeking his first title of 2014 after reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and Dubai in his only prior outings, awaits the winner of the last quarter-final between big-serving American John Isner, the 12th seed, and Latvia's Ernests Gulbis. The other semi-final was set on Thursday, with seventh-seeded four-time champion Roger Federer advancing to a meeting with Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov -- who shocked Nadal in the third round.

Boxing: Pacquiao could get fifth fight with Marquez

Posted:

LAS VEGAS (AFP) - Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and Mexican star Juan Manuel Marquez would fight each other for a fifth time if both men win their next fight, promoters said.Top Rank announced that the winner of a May 17 bout between Marquez and Mike Alvarado would be the mandatory title challenger for the winner of next month's World Boxing Organization welterweight title bout between Pacquiao and undefeated American Timothy Bradley. That could set the stage for 35-year-old southpaw Pacquiao, 55-5 with two drawn and 38 knockouts, to meet 40-year-old Marquez, 55-7 with one drawn and 40 knockouts, yet again in a rivalry that dates to 2004.Pacquiao fought a controversial featherweight draw with Marquez in 2004, beat the Mexican in a 2008 split decision for the World Boxing Council super featherweight crown and defended the WBO welterweight title with a 2011 majority decision. But Marquez took a measure of revenge in 2012, knocking out the Asian star in the sixth round. For a chance to even the score in the rivalry with Pacquiao, Marquez would have to dispatch American Mike Alvarado, 34-2 with 23 knockouts, and Pac-Man would have to defeat US unbeaten Bradley, 31-0 with 12 knockouts.Bradley won a controversial split decision over Pacquiao in 2012 to take the WBO welterweight crown and defended it last October with a split-decision victory over Marquez.Alvarado is coming off a loss to Russian Ruslan Provodnikov last October that cost him the WBO light welterweight title.Marquez has always been on our radar, & he is the one we always wanted to fight, Alvarado trainer Henry Delgado said in a Twitter posting. What a fight with such a reward - to fight the winner of Pacquiao vs Bradley.

Cycling: Sagan wins stage, Kwiatkowski takes Tirreno lead

ROME (AFP) - Slovakian Peter Sagan produced a late burst of power to claim victory in the third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico on Friday, with Michal Kwiatkowski taking the overall lead from Mark Cavenish.Sagan, of the Cannondale team, finished several bike lengths ahead of Kwiatkowski and Australian Simon Clarke on a slightly uphill finish in Arezzo after 210km of racing from Cascina.Pole Kwiatkowski, of Omega-Pharma, now leads Colombian teammate Rigoberto Uran in the overall standings by 10sec with Orica-GreenEdge rider Clarke third at 13sec.Belgian classics specialist Philippe Gilbert (BMC) had been in contention for the stage win but failed to follow Sagan's final acceleration and eventually finished fourth.A five-man breakaway escaped earlier in the stage but Europcar's Bjorn Thurau attacked solo on the second lap of the finishing 11km-long circuit and went on to build a lead of one minute on his chasers.Thurau fought valiantly but the advance of the chasing peloton prompted him to sit up early in the final lap, when a mix of climbers and overall riders congregated for the finale.Germany's world time trial champion Tony Martin, of Omega-Pharma, then whittled the field down with a turn of pace inside the final kilometre. It left an eight-man lead group climbing their way to the finish and after Gilbert tried to escape solo with 400 metres to go Sagan countered to take the win.

Oil rises ahead of Crimea breakaway vote in Ukraine

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rose on Friday amid tensions over the Ukraine crisis, as traders braced for a weekend vote in its Crimea region on whether to join Russia.Brent North Sea crude for delivery in April shot up $1.18 to $108.57 in London trade.New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate for April, closed 69 cents higher at $98.89 a barrel. The prospect of increasing animosity between the West and Russia is lending some support to crude ahead of the weekend, said Matt Smith of Schneider Electric.Top Russian and US diplomats failed Friday to defuse the crisis over Ukraine, ending up at loggerheads following tense talks over the worst East-West clash since the Cold War.Oil markets have been relatively calm despite the standoff over Ukraine since February 22, when street protests ended up ousting Ukraine's pro-Kremlin president Viktor Yanukovych.Since then, Russian troops have seized control of predominantly ethnic-Russian Crimea, and Moscow has promoted the referendum on Sunday to decide if it will join Russia or remain in Ukraine.Investors worried that potential Western sanctions against Russia could disrupt oil and gas supplies from the country.More than 70 percent of its gas and oil exports to Europe pass through Ukraine.Traders don't want to be caught short before the weekend in case something happens, said Phil Flynn of Price Futures Group.Oil traders also weighed a brighter outlook on global demand from the International Energy Agency. The IEA on Friday raised its 2014 world demand estimate by 95,000 barrels to 92.7 million barrels per day.Growth momentum is expected to benefit from a more robust global economic backdrop, the IEA said, raising its estimate for the fourth consecutive month. The pace of growth will likely build through the year, as underlying macroeconomic conditions improve, but the standoff in Ukraine has increased downside risk to the forecast, it added.

Euro climbs on Ukraine crisis worries

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro climbed against the dollar Friday as investors watched the Ukraine crisis ahead of a Crimea referendum vote this weekend on whether to leave Ukraine and join Russia. The euro bought $1.3906 around 2200 GMT, up from $1.3867 late Thursday. The Japanese currency, considered a safe haven in times of uncertainty, rose against both the euro and the dollar. The euro slid to 140.73 yen from 141.15 yen, while the dollar dropped to 101.36 yen from 101.78 yen.In a certain way, the euro is seen as a safe haven by a number of investors in Eastern Europe, who want to limit their risk exposure to what's happening around Ukraine, and repatriate their investments into euros, said Charles St-Arnaud, a Nomura analyst.Tensions were rising ahead of Sunday's secession vote in Ukraine's Crimea region, with long talks between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov failing to defuse the crisis. The US and European allies are preparing sanctions against Russia over the issue, which could begin with visa bans on senior Russian officials, according to media reports. If Crimea votes to secede from Ukraine, the initial fear about the consequences including a possible Russian invasion could send currencies and equities sharply lower in early Asian and European trade, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. She predicted a strong relief rally if the majority of voters oppose joining Russia.Unfortunately the more likely outcome is the one that means uncertainty to financial markets. By unanimously approving the referendum, the leaders of Crimea have shown their cards and their preference for ceding control to Moscow. The British pound rose to $1.6650 from $1.6620 late Thursday. The dollar fell to 0.8726 Swiss franc from 0.8745 franc.

Starc spell sets up Australian win

Posted:

CENTURION (AFP) - Left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc led a strong Australian bowling performance and set up a comfortable six-wicket win against South Africa in the third and final Twenty20 international at SuperSport Park on Friday.South Africa struggled to 128 for seven after being sent in. Aaron Finch hit 39 and Shane Watson 35 as Australia cruised to victory with five overs to spare.Man-of-the-match Starc started with a maiden and dismissed Hashim Amla in a second over which cost only three runs. He came back later and bowled big-hitting Albie Morkel to finish with two for 16 in his four overs.South African captain Faf du Plessis admitted South Africa were always in trouble after limping to 34 for two in the six power play overs. Its important to get a good start in the power play, he said. We lost too many wickets and its always difficult to recover.Opening batsman Quinton de Kock, who made 41, was the only South African batsman to shine. The 21-year-old left-hander saw his more experienced team-mates fall cheaply before he was sixth man out with the total on 81.Australia won the series 2-0, with the first match rained off, and will travel to the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh as one of the favourites for the tournament.Obviously the conditions in Bangladesh will be difficult but well take some confidence into the World T20, said captain George Bailey, who praised his bowlers for a fantastic performance.Batting conditions were not easy on a pitch which had spent much of the previous two weeks under cover because of almost continuous rain. It was slow but offered movement for the seamers and turn for the spinners.Starc was well backed up by off-spinner Glenn Maxwell, who took two for 19, and veteran left-arm spinner Brad Hogg, who claimed the key wickets of De Kock and AB de Villiers at a cost of 31 runs.Australia got off to a rapid start, with Finch and Cameron White putting on 43 for the first wicket before White slashed Wayne Parnell to third man off the fifth ball of the fifth over.Australia were already well ahead of the South African scoring rate and kept the score moving quickly despite a good spell by leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who took two for 21 in his four overs.Tahir dismissed both Finch, who made his 39 off 27 balls, and Watson, whose 35 was scored off 28 deliveries. Both were deceived by the flight and were caught going for big hits.

England hit by self-inflicted Stokes wound

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England all-rounder Ben Stokes will miss the forthcoming World Twenty20 tournament after breaking his hand while punching a locker during Thursday's five-run win over West Indies.Stokes suffered the embarrassing injury immediately after he was dismissed during the third Twenty20 international and his setback adds to England's injury woes ahead of the Twenty20 event.Stokes, 22, admitted the injury was a major disappointment on the eve of his country's departure from Barbados to Bangladesh.I am really disappointed to be missing out on going to a World T20 with England - it was a huge error in judgement following a frustrating tour for me and I deeply regret my behaviour, he said in an England and Wales Cricket Board statement on Friday.I would like to wish the team all the very best in Bangladesh.Stokes' misdemeanour is not the first of his otherwise highly-promising career. It is just 13 months since he was sent home, along with fellow all-rounder Matt Coles, from an England Lions tour of Australia after England and Wales Cricket Board management staff lost patience with the pair's persistent late-night drinking.Shortly before his Test debut in Adelaide last December, Stokes voiced his gratitude to England's then team director Andy Flower for giving him a second chance at an international career. He repaid the faith with his all-round performances, one of the very few bright spots for England as they endured a miserable Ashes campaign.Joe Root, one of England's most gifted young batsmen, has already been ruled out of the tournament, which begins in Bangladesh on Sunday, after breaking a thumb earlier in the tour of the Caribbean.England captain Stuart Broad is also a doubt with a knee problem, while Eoin Morgan has also been hampered by a similar injury.

Malaysia Airlines MH370 still missing: US media questions if it's in Pakistan

Posted:

DUNYA NEWS – An American new media on Thursday questioned if the plan could have flown to Pakistan as the new flight radius expands following Pentagon’s reports that the plane could have flown for as many as four hours after losing contact with the ground. The new radius where the plan could have flown includes parts of Pakistan and India. United States based these reports on the pings that the aircraft continued sending to the satellite.Almost eight days into disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, the whereabouts of the missing aircraft are still unknown, Dunya News reported.According to reports, the friends and families of those on board the ill-fated flight are clinging on to the hope even after the seventh day of disappearance.Earlier, the search and rescue efforts faced more mystery as reports of phones of passengers ringing surfaced but were later quashed by the investigating authorities saying none of the reported numbers were being connected. The investigation became more puzzled when an Australian paper released what is being termed as questionable conduct of first officer of the missing flight. According to British and Australian media, the first officer Fariq Abdul Hamid has previously entertained one of the female passengers in a previous flight. The 27-year-old first officer had allowed the female passengers into the cockpit and took photographs with them. The female passenger earlier told the press that the first officer even smoked in the cockpit.Malaysia Airlines has rejected the reports saying they have no reason to believe that the crew’s behavior has got anything to do about the flight’s disappearance adding that they were shocked about the news report and that they cannot be distracted right now from handling the crisis. The investigating authorities are now looking at multiple theories to figure out what could have possible happened to the ill-fated Boeing 777 aircraft that has one of the best safety records in the aviation history.Explosion on board? One of the angles being looked into is whether the plane faced a mid-air explosion. The authorities are just puzzled as how could a state of the art aircraft just vanish off the radar like that. One theory is that the aircraft may have suffered a sudden catastrophic event mid-air.The reason this theory is being floated is that the travel of two passengers on stolen passports and CIA’s statement saying terrorism is not ruled out.Among other theories are structural disintegration, hijacking, technical difficulties and pilot suicide. According to reports, none of these theories have been ruled out as the entire concentration right now is on the searching of the debris or clues that could help answer what went on the unfortunate flight. The pressure on Malaysian government and Malaysia Airline is building up as the forces of 9 countries carry search mission. The Malaysian airlines shares had dropped by 18% earlier this week as millions of travelers worry about the fate of air travel following this incident. The global pressure is because hundreds of thousands of passengers fly everyday on Boeing 777 aircrafts worldwide and authorities need to uncover the facts fast to figure out if this is a design failure that could jeopardize passengers worldwide.

Explosions in Quetta, Peshawar kill 14, injure 65

PESHAWAR/QUETTA (Dunya News/AFP) – As many as 7 people died and 40 injured in terrorist attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa capital Peshawar; and another 7 died and 25 injured in a separate attack in Balochistan provincial capital Quetta on Friday, Dunya News reported.According to reports, the Peshawar attack targeted police’s armor vehicle while the attack in Quetta was carried out through an explosive device that was planted in a bus near Science College on prince road.A suicide attack in the suburbs of the northwestern city of Peshawar, close to the lawless tribal areas that are a haven for Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants, was followed a few hours later by a bombing in the southwestern city of Quetta.Dialogue aimed at ending the Islamists' seven-year insurgency, which has claimed thousands of lives, resumed last week with government negotiators saying the process was ready to move to a new phase. But a ceasefire declared by the Pakistani Taliban on March 1 has been shaken by several bloody episodes, including a major attack on a court complex in Islamabad that left 11 people dead. The main Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) faction denied that attack, which was claimed by a splinter group, but it nevertheless prompted many observers to question the militants' commitment to dialogue.Ahrarul Hind, a little known insurgent group, claimed responsibility for the attacks. We carried out the attacks in Peshawar and Quetta and we have no links with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Ahmed Mansoor, a spokesman for the group told AFP.We will continue such attacks till the implementation of Islamic sharia in Pakistan.Friday's attack in Sarband village on the edge of Peshawar, close to the Khyber tribal district, came as Taliban negotiators met the TTP leadership to discuss the next steps in the talks process.Taliban sources told AFP the TTP's ruling council had asked for the military to pull out of South Waziristan tribal area to allow talks to be held there. The target of the Peshawar blast was a police armoured personnel carrier, officers said.It was a suicide attack and the bomber approached the police vehicle on foot, Najeeb-ur-Rahman, a senior police officer, told AFP, adding that nine people were killed.Mohammad Faisal, another police officer, confirmed the attack and death toll.In Quetta, a bicycle bomb containing eight to 10 kilos of explosives, apparently targeting a passing vehicle carrying security forces, killed 10 people and wounded 31, city police chief Abdul Razzaq Cheema said. The city is the capital of the southwestern province of Baluchistan, which is rife with separatist and Islamist militants and plagued by sectarian bloodshed.Friday's attack was the deadliest attack to hit the province since January 22, when a bomb targeting a bus carrying Shiite pilgrims returning from Iran killed 24 people.Threat to talks:Nearly 7,000 people have been killed in militant attacks in Pakistan since the emergence of the TTP after a military raid on a radical mosque in 2007, according to an AFP tally.Continued militant violence, the Islamabad court attack and a roadside bomb targeting security forces last week have threatened to derail the talks process.More than 120 have died in attacks since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced dialogue with the militants in late January.Talks were a key campaign pledge for Sharif before he was elected to office for a third time last year. But many analysts are sceptical about their chances for success, given the Taliban's demands for nationwide sharia law and a withdrawal of troops from the lawless tribal zones.Sharif's announcement came at a time when many had been expecting a full military offensive in North Waziristan, the tribal area that is a stronghold for militants. The US has long pushed Pakistan to do more to eradicate militant sanctuaries in its seven tribal regions along the border with Afghanistan. On Friday defence minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said talks remained the government's preferred option but they would resort to a military offensive if they failed.

Moyes grateful for Van Persie commitment

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United manager David Moyes is glad Robin Van Persie has set the record straight about his situation at Old Trafford.Van Persies future has been surrounded by doubt since Moyes replaced serial trophy-winner Alex Ferguson in pre-season following the latters retirement. There has been speculation about the Dutch strikers feelings regarding Uniteds training methods and regular rumours have come out of the Netherlands concerning his state of mind.Moyes has maintained throughout that there has never been an issue with the former Arsenal forward even though champions United are currently sixth in the Premier League, 18 points behind leaders Chelsea and nine off a top four finish that would secure Champions League football at Old Trafford next season. But van Persie said Thursday he sees his future at United and the 30-year-old even suggested he would be interested in extending his current contract, which expires in 2016.Ive been telling you that (hes staying) but youve wanted to say or write something different to what Ive been saying, Moyes told reporters at a news conference on Friday. Its difficult if you dont believe what I say.Robin is happy here and Im pleased about that.I didnt know they (the Van Persie quotes) were coming out. Well take it as it is. He has a couple of years to go on his contract and Im sure that will be something the board look at.Ive always said I think weve got two outstanding forwards in Wayne (Rooney) and Robin. Both have capabilities of winning games off their own back.Theyre both pivotal international players - one for Holland, one for England. Theyre the sort of players any side in the world would want in their team.Im delighted to have both of them and more importantly showing that they both want to be Manchester United players.Meanwhile Moyes said Liverpool were favourites for Sundays Premier League match between the bitter north-west rivals at Old Trafford.Brendan Rodgers side sit second in the table, seven points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand going into the weekend.United, who have dominated the last two decades are sixth, 11 points behind Liverpool.I think it is (still the biggest game in the country), Moyes said. There has been great history between the two clubs over a long period.I think its the biggest club game in the Premier League, the former Everton manager added.Asked if it was correct that Liverpool were favourites, Moyes said: It may well be. Their league position suggests theyre ahead of us. They possibly do come here favourites.Liverpool are having a very good season. Theyre our next game at home and we have to do all we possibly can to beat them.(Winning on Sunday) would be a big boost. It would be an important three points. I think everybody knows the importance of Manchester United-Liverpool games.Weve played them twice this year -- once in the league (Liverpool won 1-0) and once in the League Cup (United won 1-0). Theyve been tight games.Portuguese winger Nani is back in training and Moyes is also hopeful that Javier Hernandez, Rafael and Jonny Evans can overcome injuries to have a chance of featuring against Liverpool.Theyre all doing fine and coming on. Hopefully theyll all be in with a chance of playing, Moyes said.Nanis back. He had a really bad hamstring injury. Hes back and has trained. Hopefully we get him up to speed very quickly.

Kenya deports three to Belgium for terrorism trial

NAIROBI (AFP) - Kenya has deported three foreign men, accused of fighting alongside Somalias Al-Qaeda linked Shebab insurgents, to Belgium to face trial on terrorism charges, diplomatic sources said Friday. The men, Belgian Mustapha Bouyabaren, Frenchman Rachid Benomari and Algerian Mohamed Said, were all jailed in July 2013 for a year for after pleading guilty to entering Kenya illegally. The men are believed to have arrived in Kenya from Somalia, where a brutal Islamist insurgency is raging to topple the government.Judges in the Kenyan capital ordered that Benomari and Said be deported on Thursday, while Bouyabaren was ordered to be sent to Belgium earlier in the week, diplomatic sources added. In Belgium, the three will join the trial of 16 others which opened on Monday.According to Le Soir daily, Benomari has appeared in photos brandishing a knife with which he promised to cut the throat of infidels. The Brussels trial, which is taking place under heightened security, comes amid mounting concern over the number of Belgians believed to be travelling to Africa, Syria and the Afghan-Pakistani border to fight alongside jihadist groups. In recent years several foreigners crossed from Kenya into Somalia to join the Shebab, but now advances by African Union troops and infighting within the group have seen some foreigners leave the insurgents.
