Tennis: Federer, Djokovic open with triumphs at Miami

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic began their campaigns at the WTA and ATP Miami Masters on Friday with straight-set wins, five days after facing off in the Indian Wells final.Two-time Miami champion Federer played steady, controlled tennis for a 6-4 7-6 (7/4) defeat of Ivo Karlovic for a third-round spot.Second seed Djokovic, winner of the Indian Wells trophy over his Swiss rival last weekend in California, eased past Jeremy Chardy, 6-4, 6-3.France's Chardy delayed the inevitable ahead of the final game, taking a medical timeout after hobbling to a courtside entry tunnel with an ankle problem. As Djokovic fidgeted with practice serves, Chardy returned to take his medicine, with the three-time champion Serb advancing with three aces in the concluding game.Fifth seed Federer, now 11-1 all-time against Karlovic, was impeccable in the opening set, losing his only point on serve as he stood 5-4, 40-0 moments before serving out the opener.A winning tie-break in the second finally made the difference for Federer, now 42-12 in Miami with titles in 2005 and 2006.I made sure I had a lot of first serves in, made sure I stayed aggressive from the baseline, said the Swiss. I think it worked really well, hardly any unforced errors.I was able to move Ivo around, and I was able to maintain that throughout the match, which was key. I could focus a bit on returning while then holding serve, which is important against Ivo.Federer missed the tournament a year ago as he rested with back pain but has turned his 2014 season around after a low-key 2013.He withstood 13 aces from the big-hitting Croatian in the 74-minute win.Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer made a winning comeback after missing Indian Wells with injury, defeating Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-0French ninth seed Richard Gasquet reached the third round over Alejandro Gonzalez of Colombia, winning 7-6 (9/7), 6-4.South African Kevin Anderson, the 17th seed, beat Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 6-4, 6-3 while German Florian Mayer, the 30th seed, defeated Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-3, 6-2.China's Li Na reached the third round on the women's side as intended opponent Alisa Kleybanova withdrew with viral illness before their match. The result sends the second seed into a contest against American Madison Keys who beat Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-2.Two seeds lost in upsets as American Varvara Lepchenko put out seventh seeded Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7/2) and Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova beat number 13 Italian Roberta Vinci, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.Australian Open runner-up and 10th seed Dominika Cibulkova defeated Yvonne Meusburger 6-1, 6-2.Elina Svitolina won her third match over Australian Open semi-finalist Eugenie Bouchard, the 18th-seed, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 after losing to the Canadian in the 2012 junior Wimbledon final.France's Alize Cornet beat Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 6-7 (0/7), 6-4 as the frustrated German drop-kicked a racquet some considerable distance during a moment of anger.

Golf: Scott surges to seven-stroke lead at Bay Hill

MIAMI (AFP) - Reigning Masters champion Adam Scott of Australia fired a four-under par 68 Friday to seize a seven-stroke lead after two rounds at the US PGA Arnold Palmer Invitational.World number two Scott, hot on the heels of top-ranked Tiger Woods just three weeks before defending his Masters crown at Augusta National, matched the Bay Hill course record with a 62 Thursday to begin the day with a three-shot edge.Scott, at the event for the first time since he missed the cut in 2009, made six birdies and two bogeys Friday after the best first round in Bay Hill history to stand on 14-under 130 for 36 holes.Italy's Francesco Molinari and Americans J.B. Holmes and Chesson Hadley shared a distant second on 137. Welshman Jamie Donaldson and Americans Keegan Bradley, Jason Kokrak, Morgan Hoffmann and Brandt Snedeker were another stroke adrift. With a victory this week, Scott will not overtake Woods atop the world rankings but will move so near that he could do so in the next few weeks if neither plays again, as is expected.Scott opened Friday with five pars before sinking a five-foot birdie putt at the par-5 sixth, but found a bunker off the tee at the par-3 seventh and made bogey.Scott closed the front nine with a 13-foot birdie putt and added back-to-back birdies at 11 and 12, sinking birdie putts of five and six feet respectively.Scott, 33, sank five putts from beyond 20 feet on Thursday and added a 28-foot birdie putt at the 15th Friday. After a tap-in birdie at the par-5 16th, Scott closed with a bogey, missing a five-footer for par at 18 to settle for a seven-shot lead entering the weekend.

Motorcycling: Espargaro sweeps up in Qatar, Marquez recovers

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - Spains Aleix Espargaro completed a clean-sweep of all three practice sessions for the season-opening Qatar Grand Prix while world champion Marc Marquez emerged as the fastest of the MotoGP title favourites.Espargaro clocked 1min 54.773sec in Fridays second session after also topping the time charts earlier in the day as well as on Thursday ahead of Sundays race under the desert floodlights at Losail.Italys Ducati rider Andrea Iannone was second overall at 0.413sec off the pace with Hondas Alvaro Bautista in third and Andrea Dovizioso, on another Ducati, in fourth spot.Marquez, who made history in 2013 when he became the youngest world champion in his rookie year, still looked uneasy, was fifth fastest overall at 0.673sec off the top time on his Honda. The Spaniard, who broke his right leg in a dirt-biking accident six weeks ago, was also the best-placed of the factory teams who did not test at the Gulf venue two weeks ago.Yamaha Tech3s Bradley Smith limped away from the huge crash but was still able to post the sixth best time.Factory Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo, the 2010 and 2012 world champion, was seventh with a time of 1min 55.495sec to make sure of his place in the elite Q2 qualifying session on Saturday. The Spaniard, who underwent three operations to repair his collarbone which was shattered twice in two crashes last season, had flirted with a position outside the top 10 until a late charge. We had the same feeling today with little grip on the rear with the soft tyre, said Lorenzo. We tried to adapt to the situation and the positive thing is that we are closer to the faster riders with race pace, maybe three or four tenths instead of one second so lets see if tomorrow we can improve a bit more.Dani Pedrosa, in the second factory Honda, was eighth, Stefan Bradl on another Honda was ninth while nine-time champion Valentino Rossi completed the top 10 on the second factory Yamaha. The bigger problem for us is the new tyre from Bridgestone that provides a lot less grip on the edge of our bike so its difficult, admitted Rossi, who is entering his 19th season in grand prix racing.Im just tenth which is the minimum target, to stay in the top ten. A lot of riders are on the same pace though; we are very, very close. Espargaro remains one step ahead and also with race pace he is very fast.He remains the favourite for the race. The target is to try to start more in front in the race because its very difficult to overtake so tomorrow in the qualifying I have to go faster.

Australia widens MH370 search area as hunt ramps up

Posted:

PERTH (AFP) - Australian rescue officials broadened the search area for missing Malaysian flight MH370 Saturday and boosted the number of spotter planes looking for it in the Indian Ocean, with weather conditions favourable. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is coordinating the hunt in the vast southern search corridor for the jet that vanished on March 8, focusing for a third day on an area of wild and remote sea 2,500 kilometres southwest of Perth. On Friday five planes criss-crossed 23,000-square kilometres (8,800-square miles) without any sightings of wreckage, and the search area has now been widened.AMSA has tasked three RAAF P3 Orion aircraft, a New Zealand P3 RAAF Orion aircraft and two ultra long range commercial jets to search a 36,000-square kilometre area about 2,500 kilometres southwest of Perth today, it said. The commercial jets and one of the Orions left Perth at 2200 GMT for the four-hour flight to the zone of interest, with the others following later. The distance from Australia's west coast allows the planes only about two hours of actual search time before they must turn around with enough fuel to get back to Perth.Planes from China and Japan are also expected to join the multinational air and sea hunt in coming days.AMSA said two merchant ships were now in the area and Australian naval vessel HMAS Success, which is capable of picking up any wreckage, was due on the scene Saturday afternoon. With 153 of 239 people on board the missing plane coming from China, Chinese authorities said at least seven Chinese ships were also steaming to the southern Indian Ocean, although it could be days before they arrive. There have been no sightings of interest since Australia announced on Thursday that grainy satellite photos taken on March 16 had picked up two indistinct floating objects.Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss cautioned that any possible debris may have sunk.Something that was floating on the sea that long ago may no longer be floating. It may have slipped to the bottom, he said.Poor weather initially hampered the search but forecasters said conditions appeared good for SaturdayThe area will have pretty much light surface winds, generally less than about 10 knots. We're not expecting any significant weather, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Luke Huntington said. Visibility should be greatly improved. On Friday, the planes flew low under cloud cover rather than rely on radar, and the same procedure is expected to be followed Saturday. We replanned the search to be visual, so aircraft flying relatively low, with very highly skilled observers looking out of the windows, said AMSA official John Young of Friday's search.

27 killed across Iraq as militants seize village

Posted:

KIRKUK (AFP) - Militants controlled a northern Iraqi village for several hours Friday as attacks nationwide killed 27 people, including at least 10 policemen, amid a surge in bloodshed ahead of parliamentary elections. The latest unrest comes barely a week before campaigning begins for the April 30 election due to take place as Iraq grapples with its worst protracted bloodletting since a brutal 2006-2007 Sunni-Shiite sectarian war in which tens of thousands of people were killed. The unrest has been primarily driven by anger among the minority Sunni Arab community, which alleges discrimination at the hands of the Shiite-led government and security forces, as well as by the civil war in neighbouring Syria.Shootings and bombings on Friday mostly took place in Sunni-majority parts of northern and western Iraq, killing 27 people and wounding more than 50, security and medical officials said.In Sarha, militants mounted a coordinated pre-dawn assault on the village involving gunmen and a suicide truck bomb, and held it for several hours before Iraqi soldiers managed to re-take control, said a military source and Shallal Abdul, mayor of the nearby town of Tuz Khurmatu.Sarha is near the town of Sulaiman Bek, which has been repeatedly targeted over the past year by militants who have sought to take control of the area. The latest move is a small-scale version of the ongoing, months-long crisis being played out in Iraq's western Anbar province, where militants hold major territory.Clashes first erupted early Friday in the Sarha region of Salaheddin province, between anti-government fighters and police manning checkpoints. There was also an explosion at a bridge in the area, Abdul said.Shortly afterwards, a suicide bomber set off a fuel tanker rigged with explosives near an army base where senior police and military officers were meeting, killing 11 people and wounding five others.Among those killed were police Brigadier General Ragheb al-Timimi, his deputy Colonel Jawad Mohammed, and two other army officers.Elsewhere in Salaheddin, gunmen killed five policemen and wounded five in an attack on a checkpoint outside Samarra, while three other policemen were killed by a roadside bomb in Siniyah. In the ethnically mixed northern province of Kirkuk, twin car bombs killed two people and wounded 26.And in Anbar province, where militants have held key territory for more than two months, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a funeral inside a mosque in provincial capital Ramadi, killing six people. In early January, anti-government fighters took control of parts of Ramadi and all of nearby Fallujah, just a short drive from Baghdad.Security forces have since managed to wrest back control of most of Ramadi, but a stalemate has persisted in Fallujah, with soldiers staying on the outskirts and periodically shelling what they say are militant strongholds. No group immediately claimed responsibility for Friday's bloodshed, but Sunni militants including those linked to the powerful Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant jihadist group are typically blamed for attacking security forces and carrying out suicide bombings.More than 300 people have been killed so far this month and upwards of 2,000 since the beginning of the year, according to AFP figures based on reports from security and medical sources.Analysts and diplomats have called for the Shiite-led authorities to do more to reach out to the disaffected Sunni minority in a bid to reduce support for militancy, but with the election looming, political leaders have been loath to be seen to compromise.

US slams Turkey's move to shut down Twitter

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States on Friday slammed an attempt by Turkey to ban the online social network Twitter, which government opponents have used to publish corruption allegations.State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the order to prevent Turks from accessing the US firm's micro-blogging site was contrary to Turkey's own expressed desire to be a model of democracy. The United States supports freedom of expression in Turkey and opposes any action to encroach on the right to free speech, she told reporters. We urge the Turkish government to unblock its citizens' access to Twitter and ensure free access to all social media platforms. She added that she was not aware of any moves by the US administration to play a role in reported negotiations between Twitter and the Turkish government. But US officials, including the US ambassador to Turkey, have been working on the issue and we've expressed our concerns through those channels.Psaki stressed that democratic governments must accept the challenge, to ... listen to the voices who disagree with us.An independent and unfettered media is an essential element of democratic, open societies and crucial to ensuring official transparency and accountability, Psaki added.

N. Korea test-fires 30 missiles into sea: S. Korean military

Posted:

SEOUL (AFP) - North Korea test-fired 30 short-range missiles into the sea on Saturday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, the latest in a series of launches that have provoked criticism from Seoul and Washington.North Korea fired off 30 short-range missiles between 4:00 am and 6:10 am (1900-2110 GMT Friday) this morning from its east coast into the Sea of Japan (East Sea), said a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs. The missiles are estimated to have flown about 60 kilometres (37 miles), he added.outh Korea urged North Korea earlier this week to stop what it called provocative and potentially dangerous tests, a day after Pyongyang test-fired 25 projectiles into the sea.he show of force is apparently intended to express anger at the South's continuing joint military exercises with its ally the United States. It is not unusual for Pyongyang to carry out such tests but there has been a spate of them in recent weeks. The North should stop actions that cause military tension and unnerve its neighbours, Seoul's defence ministry spokesman Kim Min-Seok told reporters on Monday.Provocative action made without any prior notifications... can pose significant danger to sea vessels and aircraft passing by the area, he added. The US State Department had also called on Pyongyang to refrain from provocative actions that aggravate tensions.Beijing expressed concern earlier this month after the North test-fired a rocket into the flight path of a Chinese airliner. The annual South Korean-US military drills started in late February and will run until mid-April.The North has habitually criticised the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises, along with other military drills south of the border, as rehearsals for an invasion. Seoul and Washington say they are purely defensive.Earlier this month, the North's powerful National Defence Commission threatened to demonstrate its nuclear deterrent in the face of what it called US hostility. But Seoul's defence ministry said there was no sign of an imminent nuclear test by the North, which staged three atomic tests in 2006, 2009 and last year. The latest missile tests came as South Korea and Japan said Friday that their leaders will hold a summit with US President Barack Obama next week, in a breakthrough after Washington urged the pair to mend badly strained ties. The meeting on the sidelines of an international nuclear conference taking place in The Hague on Monday and Tuesday will mark the first formal talks between President Park Geun-Hye and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe since they took office more than a year ago.At the three-way summit, North Korea's nuclear programmes and the issue of nuclear non-proliferation will be discussed, Seoul's foreign ministry said in a statement.

24 killed as rebels fight to take Syria border post

BEIRUT (AFP) - At least seven Syrian soldiers and 17 rebels were killed Friday as three Islamist groups battled to take a border crossing into Turkey. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Islamists included the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front.Al-Nusra Front, Sham al-Islam and Ansar al-Sham are engaged in fierce clashes around the Kasab crossing with Turkey in Latakia province, Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.They have seized guard posts around the crossing but are not yet in control of it, he said. They also took a nearby hill and directed mortar fire at the crossing and at the nearby Alawite village of Karsana, killing five people including a child.State television said the army was tackling attempts by terrorist gangs to infiltrate from Turkish territory and attack border crossings in northern Latakia province.State news agency SANA said 17 rebels were killed, including Al-Nusras chief in Latakia province.Fridays clashes came after the three Islamist groups announced the beginning of the Anfal campaign in the Latakia area.Al-Nusra is the Syrian affiliate of Al-Qaeda and one of a number of jihadist groups fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.Large parts of Latakia province have remained relatively insulated from the fighting elsewhere in Syria. The province, which includes Assads ancestral village, is considered a regime stronghold, and many of its residents are from the Alawite minority, like Assad.Elsewhere, an air strike on the Qudsaya suburb northwest of Damascus killed three women, two children and a man, the Britain-based Observatory said.It estimates that in three years, the Syrian conflict which began as peaceful protests but became a civil war, has killed more than 146,000 people.

Oil prices higher on Ukraine tensions before weekend

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Global oil prices pushed modestly higher Friday on tensions in Ukraine, but gains were tempered by the dollar's continued strength.New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in April delivery, added 56 cents from Thursday's close to $99.46 a barrel.Brent North Sea crude for May gained 47 cents to $106.92 per barrel. The oil market is being driven higher by increased fears of a disruption in crude supplies following the expansion of US sanctions against Russia, said analysts at London-based brokerage PVM.Traders were closely monitoring events in eastern Europe after the United States and European Union announced fresh sanctions on Moscow Thursday over the annexation of Crimea.US sanctions took aim at a key figure in Russia's oil and gas industry, Geneva-based billionaire trader Gennady Timchenko, whose Gunvor firm handles much of Russia's energy exports.Gunvor is one of the world's largest commodity traders, CMC Markets Singapore said in a market commentary.Russian President Vladimir Putin is rumored to have investments in the company and direct links to Timchenko's energy activities, it said.Gunvor denied the Putin links and said Timchenko had sold his shares to a partner ahead of the sanctions, ostensibly keeping Gunvor itself outside sanctions enforcement. But Washington's move made clear that the energy industry could be impacted by the rising tensions.Russia provides about a quarter of Europe's natural gas supplies, with a significant portion of that flowing through pipelines that cross Ukraine.Traders fear that an escalation of the crisis would disrupt those supplies. The dollar remained higher after its jump Wednesday on Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen's remarks that suggested to some an interest rate hike would come early next year. With crude priced in dollars, a strengthening of the unit makes the commodity more expensive, dampening demand and prices.

Dollar mostly slips in tame pre-weekend trade

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar slipped against most other major currencies on Friday in a relatively quiet market after some mid-week turmoil over prospects of an accelerated Federal Reserve interest-rate increase. The euro rose slightly to $1.3794 around 2200 GMT from $1.3778 late Thursday. The dollar ticked down to 102.23 yen from 102.36 yen, while the euro advanced to 141.87 yen from 141.03 yen.The action in the foreign exchange market this week was marked by the strong rally in the US dollar on Wednesday. Outside of the one-day rise, however, we have not seen much follow-through, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. The dollar surged after Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said that the central bank may raise its ultra-low federal funds rate around six months after winding up its asset-purchase stimulus, expected by year-end.That timeframe suggested a rate hike in the first half of 2015, sooner than some analysts' expectations for a hike in the second half.Lien predicted that the US economic growth would pick up as the unusually rough winter weather fades into spring, leading to stronger job growth and consumer consumption. We have already seen the initial signs of improvements with some of this week's economic reports and looking ahead we should continue to receive upside surprises that will reinforce the rally in US rates and the dollar, she said. The dollar fell to 0.8828 Swiss franc from 0.8835 late Thursday. The pound dropped to $1.6486 from $1.6506.

(Web Desk) – As many as 12 Kashmiri students were reportedly attacked and injured at a university in Indian state Rajasthan over India versus Pakistan T20 cricket world cup opening match. All twelve students sustained injuries.Reportedly, a few locals started swearing at Kashmiri students in the morning on Friday. According to a student at the Meewar University quoted by a Kashmiri news agency “Situation turned hostile after around 30-40 local students thrashed four Kashmiri students.”The students insist that this is a discriminatory and cricket related attack as the Kashmiri news source continues to quote “We were preparing for Friday prayers…, in their assault, one student fell unconscious, who was removed by his colleagues to the hostel room. In the meantime, the local students including the residents of the area started to pelt stones on us.”Students alleged that the incident took place in presence of university administration and according to some reports, in front of police. They claim that at least 650 students at the university were threatened. He alleged that all this happened in the presence of the local police and varsity administration and they played role of ‘mute spectators’. About 650 Kashmir students who are pursuing different courses at the varsity have been ‘threatened’.Insisting they are being harassed since Asia Cup game between India and Pakistan in which India was defeated after a thrilling game.
