Grabar-Kitarovic wins Croatia presidential race

Posted:

ZAGREB (AFP) - Opposition conservative Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic was elected Croatias first female president Sunday, winning a tight run-off vote with a pledge to kickstart the ailing economy, almost complete results showed.Grabar-Kitarovic, an ex-foreign minister and former NATO official, won 50.4 percent of the vote, according to results based on more than 99 percent of the ballots cast. Her rival, centre-left incumbent Ivo Josipovic, garnered 49.6 percent of the vote, according to the results released by the electoral commission. The 46-year-old candidate of the main opposition HDZ party becomes the first woman to take the helm of the European Unions newest member. She is also the first female head of state chosen by voters in the largely patriarchal Balkans region since Albanias Jatifete Jahjaga was elected by parliament in 2011.Sundays election for the largely ceremonial post was held as Croatia, which became the EUs 28th member in July 2013, grapples with a deep economic crisis.Josipovic, a popular former law professor and classical music composer who belongs to the Social Democrats (SDP), the main force in the ruling coalition, had also pledged to pump new life into the ailing economy.Although presidential powers are limited in Croatia, Sundays vote was seen as a key test ahead of parliamentary elections later this year in which Grabar-Kitarovics HDZ is likely to make significant gains. The presidential election gave voters a chance to voice their dissatisfaction with the SDP-led governments performance and Josipovics failure to criticise its economic policies. The government of Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic has become increasingly unpopular as Croatia struggles to emerge from a six-year recession. The recession ... is not only the consequence of the global crisis in 2008. The problems rather are structural and the authorities have not been solving them, economic analyst Damir Novotny told AFP.Hopes that entry into the EU would provide an economic boost for the small Adriatic nation of 4.2 million have faded. Croatias economy remains among the EU blocs weakest. Unemployment stands at almost 20 percent, rising to 50 percent for the under-25s, and the government forecasts a meagre 0.5 percent growth this year.Analysts say the ruling coalition has failed to reform the huge and inefficient public sector, improve the business climate or attract EU development funds.Josipovic had vowed to initiate constitutional changes -- namely decentralisation -- as a way to revive the economy. But Grabar-Kitarovic labelled Josipovic the incapable and cold-hearted governments accomplice in bringing about economic hardship.I will face with courage and determination all problems that Croatia is suffering from, she said after voting in downtown Zagreb. We are deciding on the direction in which Croatia will go.Josipovic countered by arguing that his rival would not bring change given that she was a minister in the graft-plagued HDZ government headed by ex-prime minister Ivo Sanader -- who was tried and jailed for corruption. We are in a crisis and we now know why... You were in the government that was robbing Croatia, the government of Ivo Sanader, Josipovic said. But Srecko Lukac, a voter from Zagreb, said: Kolinda is above all a Catholic and has an impeccable career. She is a woman of the world, educated and certainly a patriot.

At least 56 dead in Mozambique beer poisoning

Posted:

MAPUTO (AFP) - At least 56 people including a toddler in the north-west of Mozambique have died from apparent poisoning after consuming traditional beer known as phombe, local authorities said Sunday.Carla Mosse, director of health for the province of Tete, told Radio Mocambique that 39 people remained hospitalised Sunday after suffering the same type of beer poisoning that caused the first deaths Saturday morning. All the victims -- who included a two-year-old child -- participated in a funeral Friday during which they apparently drank the traditional beer made from millet bran, the Mozambique paper A Verdade reported. The exact cause of the contamination remains unknown, but the woman who brewed the phombe and several members of her family were among the victims, Radio Mocambique reported. Its the first time weve faced such a tragedy, said Mosse, who added that samples of the poisoned beer, blood, urine and gastric fluids have been taken and are being sent to the capital Maputo and South Africa for analysis. Mozambiques government declared three days of national mourning in a decree published Sunday evening.

Road accidents leave 19 dead in south Peru

LIMA (Agencies) - Police officials in Peru say at least 19 people have lost their lives and more than 40 others sustained injuries in two separate road accidents in the South American country’s Andes Mountains. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said 10 passengers were killed and 30 more wounded, when a bus skidded off the road and fell into a 328-feet (100-meter) ravine in the southwestern region of Arequipa early on Saturday. The bus, operated by the Lomas del Sur company, had started its journey from the town of Ocona, approximately 600 kilometers (375 miles) southeast of the capital, Lima, and was heading to Camana district.Late on Friday, a minibus veered off into the opposite lane and rammed into an oncoming truck on the road linking the city of Juliaca - situated more than 1,200 kilometers (745 meters) southeast of Lima - to Putina in the southeastern region of Puno. The accident left nine people dead and ten wounded.

Tennis: Federer claims 1,000th win with Brisbane crown

Posted:

BRISBANE (AFP) - Roger Federer brought up his 1,000th victory at tour level in style Sunday when he beat Canadian Milos Raonic in three tough sets to win the Brisbane International.Federer was forced to absorb some superb shotmaking and blistering serves from the 24-year-old before winning 6-4, 6-7 (2/7), 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes at the Pat Rafter Arena.Federers glittering career now includes 83 singles titles, including 17 Grand Slams, since his first victory over Frenchman Guillaume Raoux in Toulouse in 1998.The 33-year-old is third on the all-time list for matches won, behind Jimmy Connors (1,253) and Ivan Lendl (1,071).To get to 1,000 wins in front of you two greats means a lot to me, Federer said, describing it as a special day.Ill never forget this moment, he added as he was presented with his Brisbane International trophy by Roy Emerson, as well as a special award for his 1,000th win by Rod Laver. It feels very different to any other match Ive ever won, because I never thought about anything reaching 500 or 800. All those numbers didnt mean anything to me, but for some reason 1,000 means a lot because its such a huge number. Just alone to count to 1,000 is going to take a while.Federers big win was not a foregone conclusion. Raonic played so well that for long periods during the second and third sets it looked like the milestone would have to wait until next weeks Australian Open. But serving at 4-5 in the third set the Canadian faltered, giving Federer championship point with a double fault, before a forehand into the net ended the contest.Federer said the nature of the match made the 1,000th win even sweeter.Looking back its almost nicer winning this way through a tight match with nerves and humid conditions against a great player in a final, Federer said.It means so much more than just running away with it with the score maybe winning 6-4, 6-4, which was looking very likely at one stage.I guess I was much more happy having to go three sets in the end rather than winning in straight.Raonic is one of the biggest servers in the game but in the final he was outserved by Federer, who sent down 20 aces to Raonics 12.Federer began strongly and pressured Raonic, taking advantage of a lapse in the Canadians second service game to secure the only break of the first set.The top seed broke Raonic at the start of the second set then held to go ahead 2-0, his tactic of standing well up to receive the Canadians huge serve paying dividends. But Raonic began to find his range with his punishing groundstrokes and put the set back on serve when he broke back two games later.Federer jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the tiebreak. But Raonic then won the next seven points to level the match at one set apiece with a succession of superb groundstrokes and brilliant serves.Raonic carried the momentum into the third set, but Federer absorbed the pressure then began to attack.Federer had two break points in the fourth game and Raonic two in the fifth, but neither was able to convert.Federer had two more chances to break in Raonics next service game but again the Canadian held on with a succession of booming serves over 220 kilometres an hour (140 mph). However, just when it looked like a second tiebreak would be needed to decide the match, Raonic stumbled and Federer swooped to victory.Raonic remained upbeat after the match, saying the performance him great confidence leading into the Australian Open.I gave myself an opportunity to be in a final here against one of the best players in the world and gave myself a pretty good opportunity to win, he said.I feel like Im just going to get better over the next eight or nine days.

Football: Barca star trio down Atletico to ease crisis talk

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez were all on target as Barcelona eased talk of a club crisis with a 3-1 win over La Liga champions Atletico Madrid on Sunday.Messi shrugged off speculation surrounding his future at the Camp Nou to cross for Neymar to scramble home the opener and then tee up Suarez to register just his second La Liga goal. The Argentine also handed Atletico a route back into the game, though, when he was adjudged to have brought down Jesus Gamez inside the area on the hour mark and Mario Mandzukic slammed home from the penalty spot. However, Messi made amends by sealing the three points when he slotted home from close range three minutes from time to move Barca back to within a point of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.Atletico are now four points adrift of Real, who also have a game in hand over both their title rivals. The crisis has already passed and now we need to have our minds on the field, Neymar told Canal Plus.We dont have a problem. It is in the past and now we are together.Atletico boss Diego Simeone, meanwhile, lamented his sides slow start.I think there were two games. In the first-half Barca were better, dynamic and intense. We played badly in the first-half, said the Argentine. In the second-half we were competitive. It was much closer to what we normally are in the second. We scored and could have got an equaliser, but in the end the third goal finishes the game.Barcelona had failed to beat Atletico in six meetings last season and wouldnt have been looking forward to facing Simeones men after an unsettling week at the Camp Nou.A 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad last weekend was followed by sporting director Andoni Zubizarretas sacking and the clubs under fire president Josep Maria Bartomeu calling club elections for the end of the season.Meanwhile, reports suggested relations between Messi and coach Luis Enrique were at breaking point after the Argentine missed training on Monday. However, the four-time World Player of the Year did his talking on the pitch as Barcas star-studded South American frontline guided them to victory.Barca went in front on 12 minutes when Messi danced past Gamez and pulled the ball across goal. Suarez failed to make a proper contact, but Neymar was on hand to sweep home his 17th goal of the season.Atletico keeper Miguel Angel Moya then kept his side in the game with a fine double save to firstly parry Jordi Albas fierce drive and then block Suarezs effort on the rebound. The visitors were on the ropes in the first 45 minutes and teenage centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez was lucky to escape unpunished when he flew in dangerously on Neymar to leave the Brazilian with a bloodied ankle.Neymar missed a guilt-edged chance to double Barcas advantage midway through the half when he headed wide with the goal at his mercy after brilliant play by Messi and Suarez. However, when the second goal did come, Atletico had a right to feel hard done by as Messi appeared to use his hand to speed past Gamez before sliding the ball through for Suarez to slot home.Referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco balanced up that perceived injustice on the hour mark, though, as he pointed to the spot when Gamez went down under a challenge from Messi. It was the first time that Messi had ever conceded a spot-kick in La Liga and Mandzukic didnt pardon him as he slammed high into the roof of the net.Fernando Torres was introduced by Simeone as Atletico searched for an equaliser and he was only denied a ninth goal in 12 games against Barca by Claudio Bravos quick-thinking as the Chilean keeper rushed from his line to intercept Mandzukics dangerous low cross. But in a week where he has dominated the headlines, Messi rounded off his fine performance with a first goal against Atletico in eight games when he pounced on a loose ball inside the area to side-foot home.

Football: Sanchez boosts Arsenal's top-four bid

LONDON (AFP) - Alexis Sanchez delivered a majestic display as Arsenal closed the gap in the race for a top four finish in the Premier League with a 3-0 victory over Stoke on Sunday.Sanchez made Laurent Koscielnys opener and then netted his 17th and 18th goals of the season either side of half-time at the Emirates Stadium to lift Arsenal above Tottenham into fifth spot. The battle for Champions League qualification is hotting up, with Arsene Wengers side now level on points with fourth placed Southampton, who face third placed Manchester United at Old Trafford later on Sunday.Collectively, youre happy when you score a few goals. We had a strong start and we knew that was vital today, Wenger said.Alexis Sanchez is one of the best players. Hes a fighter with a combination of talent and fighting spirit which is very difficult to find.He plays with passion and you want people to enjoy what theyre doing on the pitch and show it as well.Just five weeks after Stokes shock victory over the Gunners, Arsenal legends Thierry Henry and Robert Pires watched from the stands as French defender Koscielny started the revenge mission with a sixth minute header from Sanchezs cross.Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy was forced off with a shoulder injury after tangling with Stokes Marko Arnautovic. He has to see a specialist then we see where we go from there. A dislocated shoulder can take a while, Wenger added. But the hosts struck again in the 33rd minute. It was another moment of magic from Sanchez as the former Barcelona forward took Tomas Rosickys pass and sized up his options before cleverly beating Asmir Begovic at his near post.Sanchez wasnt finished yet and his deflected free-kick four minutes after the interval sealed the points.

Golf: Sullivan wins maiden title as Schwartzel collapses

Posted:

EKURHULENI (AFP) - Englands Andy Sullivan capitalised on Carl Schwartzels South African Open fourth round implosion to claim his debut EPGA title in a play-off on Sunday. The 2011 Masters champion Schwartzel looked to be heading for victory, with the South African entering the final round at the Glendower Golf Club in Ekurhuleni five strokes clear of the field. The world number 31 still had a four shot cushion with five holes to go.But he then folded dramatically, dropping a shot at the 14th, and three-putting the 16th for a double bogey.A poor tee shot at the 17th triggered another bogey to leave him level with Sullivan at 11 under par.Sullivan held his nerve when the pair returned to the 18th for the first sudden death hole. Both players failed to make the fairway, with Sullivan recovering brilliantly from the trees to hole out from 10 feet for a winning birdie.Sullivan had begun the final round seven shots behind his playing partner Schwartzel, but set up his maiden win on the European Tour with four birdies, an eagle and one bogey for a closing 67.Its unbelievable, said the 27-year-old.After Saturday I didnt think I stood much of a chance with Charl getting ahead that far.I just dug in there yesterday and today and found myself in a position where I had a chance to win. My caddie said over the last few holes no regrets and Ive definitely got no regrets over the last few holes, especially that play-off hole.Charl has won major championships, my caddie said expect him to hole (his third shot) and he nearly did. I was delighted just to hit the green and have a chance to win and Im just glad I took it.I didnt want to give him a second chance to take the title away from me so I am absolutely delighted and I hope the guys at Nuneaton Golf Club are having a few beers for meTo just play on the European Tour is something Ive wanted to do my whole life, so to win an event just caps it all off and to do it in South Africa where I have always enjoyed playing, it has just been an incredible week.Englands Lee Slattery carded a closing 69 to finish third, one shot outside the play-off, with Spains Pablo Martin another shot back in fourth after also recording a 69.

Rallying: Al-Rajhi claims stage win, Al-Attiyah goes for oxygen

IQUIQUE (AFP) - Saudi Arabias Dakar Rally rookie Yazeed Al-Rajhi claimed a maiden stage win in the spectacular sand dune finish in Iquique on Sunday to break Minis stranglehold on this years raceAs the Toyota driver celebrated his landmark day on the worlds toughest rally, his Qatari rival Nasser Al-Attiyah did enough in his Mini in third to consolidate his position at the top of the driver standings. The 2011 Dakar winner even gained a few seconds on his closest pursuer, South Africas Giniel de Villiers (Toyota), who finished fourth.Up to this win for Toyota, each stage had ended up being claimed by one of the Minis.Sundays 808 kilometre run, with 784km timed, took Al-Rajhi and the rest of the car competitors from Bolivias salt flats in Uyuni to the vertiginous dunes of the Chilean Pacific coastal city of Iquique. He covered the route in three hours, 26 minutes and 49 seconds, with Saturdays stage winner Orlando Terranova in second in his Mini, over one minute behind.Al-Attiyah, a further two-and-a-half minutes back in third, has an almost eight-and-a-half minute lead over de Villiers, who lost precious time in the final dunes in the approach to Iquique, in the race for the drivers crown. But the Qatari was happy just to get through the weekend.Driving in Bolivia was a treat. The only thing I didnt enjoy was the altitude. Yesterdays stage was very tough. I vomited three times and (co-driver) Matthieu (Baumel) asked me to stop, he explained. But no, I didnt want to lose any time. I wasnt able to eat anything yesterday, I only had a soup and a cup of green tea. I also had oxygen for thirty minutes before going to sleep. Fortunately, I felt much better today. Im happy to stay in the lead. We lost a wheel at the end of the first part of the special and lost a few minutes changing it. However, I attacked in the second half, overtook four cars and made up the lost time.Al-Rajhi, who remains in contention for the drivers crown in third, 18min 40sec behind, said: Today was a good day.The 33-year-old Dakar debutant added: We drove fast and we had fun.The most difficult part was organising toilet stops At such altitudes, just a sip of water makes you want to go... The in-line start in Salar was great and carried out under good conditions. We didnt have the highest top speed, but we managed to catch up with the others. It was a bit like a game.Terranova described the marathon stage as an awesome experience.Monday is the final rest day for the car drivers ahead of Saturdays finish in Buenos Aires. After Saturdays day off for motorcyclists the 717km (321km timed) seventh stage which took the two-wheeled competitors from Iquique to Uyuni was won by Hondas Paulo Goncalves. The Portuguese rider is placed third in the overall motorbike standings, 11minutes behind his Spanish teammate Joan Barreda, with this pair separated by KTMs defending champion Marc Coma.Coma, a four-time winner, is six minutes adrift.

ISLAMABAD (Online): The US Secretary of State, John Kerry is arriving today (Monday) in Islamabad for a two-day visit for Pakistan-US strategic dialogue. Kerry would hold a meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the evening to discuss bilateral and regional issues, diplomatic sources informed Sunday. On Tuesday, he would participate in Pak-US strategic dialogue, discussing bilateral ties and enhancement of relations in five important areas namely energy; security, strategic stability and non-proliferation; the defence consultative group; law-enforcement, counter-terrorism; and economy and finance.Kerry would also convey a special message from President Obama to Sharif urging for resumption of Pak-India dialogue to defuse tense situation after firing incident killing Pakistani civilians and soldiers, the diplomatic sources said. During his stay in India on Sunday, he has already secretly raised the issue with India for normalization of its ties with Islamabad, they added. The US Secretary would meet Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif after the strategic dialogue meeting to discuss bilateral defence ties, security issues, counter-terrorism and concerns arising after drawdown from Afghanistan. The sources revealed that Operation Zarb-e-Azb, terrorism and other issues of mutual interest would also be discussed. Kerry’s visit to the Army Public School in Peshawar, that was brutally attacked last month, is also expected. Energy sector being part of the Pak-US strategic dialogue, he would likely to visit Terbela Dam, according to media reports. The talks between Pakistan and the US would mainly focus on discussing the avenues and means as how to go further in bilateral cooperation. The strategic dialogue between the two countries covers the five areas of bilateral cooperation that had discussed through working groups. The ministerial level meeting would give it a strategic touch. Officials in the foreign ministry say that the scope of the talks could be expanded to other areas later. Meanwhile, diplomatic sources also said that Kerry is likely to brush aside the Indian criticism over financial assistance to Pakistan. “He is expected to announce financial package for Pakistan for the coming years,” they said. Under the Kerry-Lugar-Berman bill, the US promised in 2010 to pay Pakistan $ 7.6 billion to Pakistan in five years. Until now Obama administration has paid $ 4.3 billion to the country, the payment of outstanding money would come under discussion, the sources informed. The issuance of USD 532 million would also be raised and Kerry is like to give a positive node as the US understand Pakistan’s difficulties when a full-fledge country-wide action against terrorism is going on. Former Taliban militant Shahidullah Shahid joins IS, video shows

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - An online video purportedly shows dozens of former militants of the Pakistani Taliban pledging allegiance to the Islamic State jihadist group and beheading a man they identified as a Pakistani soldier. The video is bound to raise alarm bells over whether IS is tapping support within Pakistan and Afghanistan, a region awash with dozens of militant groups.Released on Twitter and other jihadi websites on Saturday, it shows influential former Pakistani Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid and other militants passing through a rugged mountainous area on horseback, waving IS flags. Shahid already pledged allegiance to IS last October and was later sacked by the Pakistani Taliban. As you know, most of the attendees have pledged allegiance to the Caliphate before, and now we present a collective pledge of allegiance, Shahid told the militants.Shahid announced that commanders of ten militant groups had chosen Hafiz Saeed Khan from Pakistans Orakzai tribal district as the new IS head for Afghanistan and Pakistan.Saeed Khan was then seen taking a pledge of allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The video also shows militants beheading a man in military uniform who they claimed was a Pakistan soldier. It was not clear where and when the video had been filmed nor could it be independently verified.Leaflets calling for support for IS have been seen in parts of northwest Pakistan, and at least five Pakistani Taliban commanders and three lesser cadres from the Afghan Taliban have pledged their backing.Pro-IS slogans have appeared on walls in several cities in both countries and in Kabul University, where a number of students were arrested.Pakistan has strengthened its own offensive against the Taliban since their attack on a military-run school on December 16 killed 150 people, 134 of them children.

Gayle leads Windies to world record triumph

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Chris Gayle blasted 90 off 41 balls as the West Indies achieved a world record run chase in the second Twenty20 international on Sunday to beat South Africa by four wickets.South Africa captain Faf du Plessis hit a 46-ball century in his teams total of 231 for seven -- their second highest total in the shortest form of the game. But it was overhauled with four balls to spare on a record-breaking day at the Wanderers with West Indies captain Darren Sammy finishing the match with a six to take his team to 236 for six.Man of the match Gayle was again the star for the West Indies as he shared a second wicket stand of 152 off 75 balls with Marlon Samuels, who made 60.Cricket was the winner today, said Sammy. We were dominated in the Tests but we have different energy in this series. It was astonishing batting by both teams in ideal conditions on a field where the world record 50-overs run chase was achieved by South Africa when they scored 438 for nine against Australia in 2005/06.The previous T20 record chase was 211 for four by India against Sri Lanka in Mohali in 2009/10.Du Plessis said his South African record score of 119 off 56 balls was bittersweet. He added: I said at half-time that this game is very far from finished. Nothing is out of reach. Chris played so well up front, it is very hard to contain him.The tempo of the match was set when Du Plessis and David Miller (47) put on 103 off 49 balls for South Africas third wicket.Du Plessis hit five sixes and 11 fours, while Millers three sixes and four fours off 26 balls included arguably the biggest hit seen at the ground, a mighty blow over long-on which cleared a four-tier grandstand and sailed into an adjacent golf course. The West Indies replied with even more brutality at the start of their innings. They raced to 86 for one in the six-over power play, with Gayle and Samuels posting a fifty partnership off 21 balls.Gayle, who hit a 17-ball half-century in the first match in Cape Town on Friday, was only marginally slower on Sunday, reaching the mark off 20 deliveries with three sixes and seven fours. The carnage continued, with Gayle bludgeoning the bowling, while Samuels managed to play with more classical control despite scoring his 60 off 39 balls with seven fours and two sixes.South Africa were still in with a chance when medium-pacer David Wiese had Gayle caught behind in the 14th over and followed up with the wickets of Samuels and Kieron Pollard, both caught at long-on, in his next over. At that stage the West Indies still needed 47 off 25 balls. Two more wickets fell but Sammy clinched the win by hitting an unbeaten 20 off seven balls, finishing the match by slamming Marchant de Lange into the crowd beyond midwicket.South African opening bowler Kyle Abbott conceded a world record 68 in his four overs. The previous highest was 64 by Jimmy Anderson of England and Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka.
