Soccer: Ivorians draw 1-1 with Mali

Posted:

MALABO (AFP) - The Ivory Coast again needed a late Max-Alain Gradel goal just to earn a draw at the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, while Cameroon were held by Guinea in the tightest group in the competition. The Ivorians drew 1-1 with Mali before Cameroon and Guinea drew by the same scoreline in Malabo in Group D, which has now seen four matches all end one apiece and will go right down to the wire. With star forward Gervinho missing due to suspension after being sent off in the opening stalemate with Guinea, Herve Renards Elephants fell behind at the Estadio de Malabo in the seventh minute of an eventful west African derby through one of the goals of the tournament so far.Sambou Yatabare hung a cross from the right flank to the back post, where Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Bakary Sako connected with a sweet half-volley that flew into the net. With captain Yaya Toure toiling in a deep-lying midfield role, the Ivorians were struggling, although Kolo Toure did have a header turned against the bar just after the half-hour mark.In an effort to turn the game around, Renard sent on Gradel for his Saint-Etienne colleague Ismael Diomande before the interval, and it was the little winger who eventually rescued his side.Only four minutes remained when Salomon Kalou and Serge Aurier combined to set up Gradel, who slotted low past Malis substitute goalkeeper Germain Berthe, on for the injured Soumaila Diakite. There were lots more good things today than in the first match but unfortunately we went behind early on, lamented Renard.Mali had lost every previous meeting with the Ivory Coast at the Cup of Nations, including in the 2012 semi-finals, but the Eagles still saw the draw as a missed opportunity. We are very disappointed that, for the second time in a row, we have conceded a goal at the end of the match, said the Eagles Polish coach Henryk Kasperczak, who took the Ivorians to third place at the 1994 Cup of Nations.Cameroon came from behind to draw with Mali in their opening game, but against Guinea on Saturday it was the Indomitable Lions who struck first.Benjamin Moukandjos corner went straight into the net to open the scoring on 13 minutes, but a marvellous finish by Ibrahima Traore, arrowed low into the far corner of the net, brought Guinea level just before the break.Afterwards, Borussia Moenchengladbach winger Traore, who has now won two man of the match awards in as many games, revealed his confidence that previously unfancied Guinea will qualify for the last eight.Im pretty sure that we will qualify because we have the quality and we fear nobody. So now its time to win this game against Mali and do something good for the country, he said. With a decisive game against the Ivory Coast to come, Cameroon forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting warned: Now its the last match that counts. We came here to win of course, but we are building a new team.Remarkably, with all 16 teams having played two group games, nobody has yet managed to qualify for the quarter-finals of what is proving to be one of the tightest Nations Cups in memory.Algeria are the only team to have scored more than twice in a game, doing so in their opening 3-1 win over South Africa in Group C.And there have been a total of 10 draws in 16 matches so far, unheard of since the competition expanded to include 16 nations for the first time in 1996.If the final two Group D games were also to end 1-1, then the drawing of lots would be required to decide who progresses to the last eight.Meanwhile, ahead of the final round of matches on Sunday, Group A is not quite so tight.Congo Brazzaville and Gabon are out in front, and both need only draw their games in order to progress.Claude Le Roys Congo take on 2013 runners-up Burkina Faso in Ebebiyin while Gabon face Equatorial Guinea in Bata, with the hosts having to win to go through.

Moroccan security forces seize hashish in large amount

Posted:

RABAT (AFP) - Moroccan security forces seized nearly 24 tonnes of hashish from a number of boats and arrested 11 people after an overnight chase off the northern coast, the MAP news agency reported Saturday. The operation came hours after Spanish police said they had seized 11 tonnes of hashish and detained 55 people across the country as part of an operation targeting a Moroccan drug trafficking ring.Spains proximity to north Africa, a major source of hashish, and its close ties with its former colonies in Latin America, a key cocaine-producing region, have made it the main gateway into Europe for narcotics. The Spanish raids were carried out throughout the country, including Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, as well as the Spanish exclave of Ceuta on Moroccos Mediterranean coast.Spanish police also seized two million euros ($2.2 million) in cash as well as several weapons, including assault rifles, as part of the operation that followed a two-year investigation. The Moroccan agency did not provide any further details on the extent to which the two operations may have been linked. But police source in Spain said the gang would smuggle the drugs into Spain on speedboats or hidden inside the fuel tanks of trucks.Morocco is one of the worlds principal producers of hashish, and the interior ministry estimates that more than 700,000 people make a living from cultivating cannabis, from which the resin is produced.

Prosecutor found dead shortly before entering court room

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - An Argentine prosecutor found dead shortly before he was about to make explosive allegations about President Cristina Kirchner took a bullet point-blank to his forehead, justice officials said Saturday.Authorities said Diego Lagomarsino, a computer expert and colleague who said he had brought prosecutor Alberto Nisman a handgun Saturday night at his request, has been barred from leaving Argentina.Nisman was found dead with a bullet to the head in his Buenos Aires home on Sunday, just before he was set to go before a congressional hearing to accuse Kirchner and Foreign Minister Hector Timerman of shielding Iranian officials implicated in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center that killed 85 people. It was Argentinas worst terror attack in modern history. It has never gone to trial fully. Several pretrials were cancelled amid serious irregularities involving judges and Argentine intelligence staff.Investigators, who initially said Nisman appeared to have committed suicide, have not ruled out homicide or induced suicide.Kirchner, meanwhile, has said she believes the 51-year-old was murdered in a plot to implicate her government in a coverup.Prosecutor Viviana Fein, who is leading the investigation, said investigators were waiting for ballistics analysis, including a DNA comparison, and to see whether the bullet taken from the body matches the .22-caliber weapon found at the scene.Fein later told local television that the shot was fired from a distance no greater than a centimeter while reiterating her contention that there was no evidence third parties took part in the actual shooting itself. We are still awaiting the toxicological and tissue testing, which can take a bit longer, she added. Before his demise, Nisman had filed a 280-page complaint charging that Kirchner had issued an express directive to shield a group of Iranian suspects in the 1994 bombing.Nisman contended that the government had agreed to swap grain for oil with Tehran in exchange for withdrawing red notices to Interpol seeking the arrests of the former and current Iranian officials accused in the unsolved case.Since 2006, Argentine courts have demanded the extradition of eight Iranians, including former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, former defense minister Ahmad Vahidi and Irans former cultural attache in Buenos Aires, Mohsen Rabbani, for the bombing. But in 2013, Kirchner signed a memorandum of understanding with Tehran agreeing to set up a truth commission to investigate the bombing and allowing Argentine prosecutors to question the suspects in Iran. The rapprochement was vehemently opposed at the time by Jewish community leaders, who charged it was unconstitutional.Argentinas Jewish community is Latin Americas largest.

Madrid: Police arrest 4 suspected militants

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Spanish police on Saturday arrested four suspected Islamist extremists who were prepared to launch attacks in Spain, the government said.Officers detained two pairs of brothers, Spaniards of Moroccan origin, in the Spanish territory of Ceuta bordering Morocco, the interior ministry said in a statement. It said they had a very similar profile to the killers in this months Islamist attacks in France, but made no material link between the two cases.Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz compared the suspects to the two brothers -- Cherif and Said Kouachi-- who killed 12 people in an attack on the Paris offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The Ceuta suspects resembled the Paris attackers in their physical and psychological preparation and their skill in using weapons, he told reporters. The Spanish suspects also had a firm determination... to commit an attack and if necessary sacrifice themselves and die in the attempt, he said. The Ceuta four were inspired by online messages from the armed Islamic State (IS) group, which controls parts of Iraq and Syria. They formed part of a jihadist cell fully prepared and willing to launch an attack in Spain, the ministry statement said.It did not say whether the four had made any concrete plans for an attack but said they acquired a high level of radicalisation.Police seized a nine-millimetre automatic pistol and machetes among other items during dawn raids on two properties. The four suspects were to be flown by helicopter to Madrid where they will go before a judge, reports said. They were the latest in a string of arrests in Ceuta and Spains other north African territory, Melilla, where authorities have been monitoring suspected extremist cells. In recent weeks the Paris attacks have put Spanish police on heightened alert for extremists on their soil. They are helping investigate suspects linked to the attacks in Paris and other plots that were foiled later in Belgium, who are said to have earlier travelled to Spain.Spanish counterterrorism sources said a third gunman behind the Paris attacks, Amedy Coulibaly, drove five people to Madrid in early January, before the attacks, to catch a plane to Turkey.Belgian authorities have meanwhile issued arrest warrants to police in Spain and France for two men on the run after a jihadist cell was broken up in Belgium.Spanish police have arrested about 50 suspected jihadists over the past year, the ministry said this month. Many of them are suspected of planning to join IS.Some were caught after returning from zones controlled by the jihadist group and a handful have died there, according to Spanish authorities. That has raised concerns over homegrown and lone wolf extremists -- a familiar trend in Britain, France and Germany where hundreds of radicalised natives have been identified, but a relatively new phenomenon in Spain. The Spanish government has been cracking down on radical recruitment online, monitoring extremist web forums to identify suspects such as those arrested in Ceuta.Spain suffered one of Europes worst ever peacetime attacks on March 11, 2004, when Al-Qaeda-inspired bombings killed 191 people in an attack on Madrid commuter trains.
