Syria opposition says ready for talks but Assad must go

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - Syrias main opposition groups agreed at unprecedented talks Thursday to negotiate with President Bashar al-Assads regime but insisted he step down at the start of a political transition.Gathered in the Saudi capital Riyadh for the first major talks bringing together various political and armed factions of the Syrian opposition, representatives agreed on a framework for negotiations sought by world powers. The participants are ready to negotiate with representatives of the Syrian regime... within a specific timeframe that would be agreed on with the United Nations, participants said in a statement. But the opposition groups insisted that Bashar al-Assad and his aides quit power with the start of the transition period set out last month in Vienna by world powers. One of Syrias most important rebel groups, the Ahrar al-Sham force, said it had walked out of the meeting but sources inside the talks and Western diplomats said it had subsequently signed on to the agreement. This could not immediately be confirmed. In the biggest diplomatic push yet to resolve Syrias nearly five-year civil war, top diplomats from 17 countries -- including backers and opponents of Assad -- agreed in Vienna on a roadmap for the country. It would see a transitional government set up within six months and elections held within 18 months, and calls for negotiations between the opposition and Assads regime by January 1.Under the agreement reached Thursday, opposition groups have formed a supreme committee for negotiations based in Riyadh which will act as a reference for their negotiating team, whose members the body itself will choose.According to opposition sources, the committee will be made up of 30 members, a third of them representing armed factions. The opposition groups called on the United Nations and international community to force the regime to take goodwill measures before negotiations can begin, including an end to indiscriminate bombing and sieges on rebel-held areas, the entry of humanitarian aid, the release of political detainees and a halt to executions.Suhair Atassi, a member of the National Coalition, the main political opposition grouping, told AFP that the agreement represented a unified vision for the settlement process. The future of Assad was a key issue of the talks.Western- and Arab-backed rebel groups have insisted the Syrian leader must step down immediately but internal opposition groups disagree, as do Assads key backers Tehran and Moscow.Participants appeared to have reached a compromise by agreeing to hold talks without Assads immediate departure but insisting he step down later.Syrias opposition has been under intense pressure to sign up to the peace process, with US Secretary of State John Kerry saying Thursday he hoped the meeting would make progress.I think everybody is moving in the direction that they want to rapidly try to get to a political process and get it underway under UN auspices, Kerry told reporters on the sidelines of the UN climate summit in Paris. Not all of Syrias armed factions attended the talks, with jihadists such as the Islamic State group and the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front excluded.Kurdish fighters were also excluded and at parallel talks in Syria this week the Syrian Democratic Forces, a Kurdish-Arab coalition fighting IS in northern Syria, announced the creation of a political wing called the Syrian Democratic Council (SDF).Given its longstanding opposition to Assad, Saudi Arabias hosting of the talks came under fire, with Tehran saying the meeting was in breach of declarations made in the international peace talks.Irans Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said groups linked to IS were attending.Terrorist groups pretending to be moderate opponents (of the regime) and seeking to determine the future of Syria and the region will not be permitted, Abdollahian said in remarks quoted by state television.Only the people of Syria can decide the future of their country, he added.Riyadh has been among those calling most strongly for Assads departure and on Thursday Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir insisted again that he must leave.Bashar al-Assad has two choices: leave through negotiations, which would be fastest and easiest, or he will be removed by force, because the Syrian people refuse for this man to be allowed to stay in power, Jubeir said. The United States will hold further discussions on Syria with Russia and the United Nations in Geneva on Friday. Since it began in March 2011, Syrias conflict has left more than 250,000 dead and forced millions from their homes.

Suicide car bombs kill 12 in northeast Syria town: monitor

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - At least 12 people were killed and dozens wounded on Thursday in a triple suicide car bomb attack in northeastern Syrias Hasakeh province, a monitor said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, updating an earlier death toll of 10, said suicide car bombs struck three different locations in Tal Tamr, which is controlled by Kurdish forces and has been the target of past attacks by the Islamic State (IS) group. The Britain-based monitors chief, Rami Abdel Rahman, said it was not immediately clear if all the casualties were civilians, noting that one of the blasts took place in front of a local security post.State television also reported the blasts, saying at least nine people had been killed and dozens injured. In February, IS overran much of the Khabur region, in which Tal Tamr lies, and kidnapped at least 220 Assyrian Christians during the offensive. But Kurdish fighters from the Peoples Protection Units (YPG) subsequently recaptured the region, and dozens of the IS-held hostages have been released in recent months. On Wednesday, some 25 Assyrian hostages, including two children, were freed by IS, according to the Assyrian Human Rights Network.

Kerry to co-chair Libya talks in Rome Sunday

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Rome this weekend for high-level talks aimed at helping conflict-torn Libya form a unified government, Washington said Thursday.Kerry will co-chair the talks on Sunday with his Italian counterpart Paolo Gentiloni, State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner said. The meeting will demonstrate the commitment of the international community to helping Libyans move forward rapidly to form a unified Libya government, a government of national accord, he said.Italy, a former colonial power in Libya, called the conference along with the United States, which will also include representatives from Russia, Britain, China and France.Gentiloni said last week that the one-day meeting aims to give a decisive push for the conclusion of a deal for a national government in Libya, where the Islamic State group is exploiting the chaos and taking root.Earlier Thursday, Libyas rival parties met in Tunis for talks on a disputed UN-brokered deal backed by the international community to set up a unity government.Ambassadors to Libya from several EU countries and the US on Tuesday warned against attempts to derail the UN-brokered deal, insisting it is the only way forward.Libya has had two administrations since August 2014, when an Islamist-backed militia alliance overran Tripoli, forcing the recognised government to take refuge in the east.Kerry is in Paris for the UN conference on climate change.

Libya rivals meet in Tunis for UN-brokered talks

TUNIS (AFP) - Libyas rival parties met in Tunis Thursday for talks on a disputed UN-brokered deal backed by the international community to set up a unity government in the war-wracked country. The talks were to focus on efforts to move forward with the process ahead of an international summit on Libya scheduled for Sunday in Rome, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said. The UN envoy for Libya, Martin Kobler, and representatives of rival parliaments were attending the talks at a hotel in a Tunis suburb, with foreign diplomats invited as observers.UNSMIL said the talks could carry on until late Thursday or into Friday morning. On Tuesday, ambassadors to Libya from several EU countries and the United States warned against attempts to derail the UN-brokered deal, insisting it is the only way forward.Their statement came after the rival parliaments announced a deal of their own that was reached without UN participation. It urged those who still oppose the UN proposal to act urgently and responsibly in the interests of the Libyan people, and to join the majority who want peace in unity under a stable and inclusive national unity government. The statement echoed one by Kobler on the deal announced in October by his predecessor, Bernardino Leon, after arduous negotiations, which stipulated the creation of a unity government. That agreement is the only available way to move the process forward and quickly, Kobler told representatives of the parliaments on Monday. That deal was rejected by Libyas internationally recognised parliament, which is based in eastern Libya, and by the rival General National Congress in Tripoli. On Sunday, they announced agreement on a joint declaration of principles aimed at resolving the crisis that has plunged Libya into chaos since a 2011 uprising.Kobler urged the lawmakers to join the UN-brokered process in a bid to end the conflict that has endured since the revolt that toppled dictator Moamer Kadhafi.Libya has had two administrations since August 2014, when an Islamist-backed militia alliance overran Tripoli, forcing the recognised government to take refuge in the east.

Tennis: Nadal casts doubt on another Grand Slam win

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Rafael Nadal cast doubt Thursday on whether he could win another Grand Slam after his long reign as French Open champion ended in 2015 and his rankings slid during the worst year of his career. The 29-year-old Spaniard said he was working hard to return to form and was happy with the way the year ended after a resurgence at the World Tour finals in London in November. But asked whether he could clinch another major title to add to the 14 Grand Slams he has already accumulated, Nadal was unconvinced when speaking to reporters in New Delhi.I dont know when that will happen and I dont know if thats going to happen, he said. The only thing I know is Im working very hard to try to get the opportunities.Nadal was speaking after hitting balls with youngsters during a coaching session in the Indian capital where he plans to open an academy for talented players. Nadal sunk to world number 10 this year after losing at the French Open quarter-final stage, before suffering early exits from Wimbledon and the US Open. But Nadal, who has been plagued with injuries and last year had surgery to remove his appendix, rallied in the latter part of this year to finish at world number five.2015 has been not the best season, he said.(But) In the last three months, I finished much better and Im happy the way Im playing now. I need to keep going the same way that I finished the 2015 season.Nadal is in Delhi to play in the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) tour, which promotes a shortened, speeded-up version of the game that organisers say is more television-friendly than the traditional format. The IPTL, which began in Japan this month, was held in Manila earlier this week and will also have stops in Dubai and Singapore.

Football: Goalless draw secures top spot for Liverpool

PARIS (AFP) - Liverpool advanced to the knockout stages of the Europa League as winners of their group on Thursday after a 0-0 draw with Sion in the bitter chill of Switzerland.Jurgen Klopps side had already progressed so the German handed starts to the likes of Kolo Toure, Divock Origi and young left-back Brad Smith against opponents who required a point to confirm their own qualification for the last 32.Smiths performance was one of the biggest plusses in a game of few chances played in freezing temperatures and it was a result that suited both teams in the end.Liverpool finish top of Group B after going unbeaten through their six games, while Sion advanced as well, although even a defeat would have sufficed for them because Rubin Kazan drew 2-2 at Bordeaux in the other match.Elsewhere Fenerbahce qualified from Group A after a 1-1 draw with Celtic in Istanbul.Lazar Markovic, on loan from Liverpool, put the Turks ahead but they had the Brazilian midfielder Diego sent off before Kris Commons came off the bench to secure a point for the already eliminated Scottish champions.Norwegian side Molde topped the group after drawing 1-1 at Ajax, who go out.Marseille qualified from Group F thanks to a 4-2 victory over Slovan Liberec in the Czech Republic as Michy Batshuayi, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, Abdelaziz Barrada and Lucas Ocampos all scored for the French side.Danish side Midtjylland, who knocked out Southampton earlier in the competition, held Club Brugge of Belgium 1-1 to go through from Group D behind Napoli.

Football: FIFA warns soccer legends against Kuwait game

Posted:

ZURICH (AFP) - FIFA has sent a global alert to all members warning them to keep their players away from an All Stars game in Kuwait which is suspended by the world body.Kuwait has invited former international stars such as Steven Gerrard of England and Andrea Pirlo of Italy to take part in the game on December 18 in a bid to break out of its isolation, according to media reports. But FIFA has written to all 209 member associations warning against registered players taking part in the contest.Footballs world body and the International Olympic Committee have both suspended Kuwait because of government interference in the Gulf states sport. Even the United Nations has become involved in the showdown.Kuwaits suspension in October means it is no longer entitled to take part in international matches and/or competitions until the relevant suspension is no longer in force, said the FIFA notice sent Wednesday, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.It added that FIFA registered clubs and players may not entertain sporting contact with the suspended FIFA member association.Such principle is, of course, also to be followed at all sporting levels involving football in the territory of the state of Kuwait, FIFA ordered. The world body has also written to the Kuwait Football Association warning that the proposed match between a Kuwait All Stars XI and a Champions Tour XI needs FIFA approval.A FIFA source told AFP that if FIFA-registered players or agents are involved in the game or its organisation Any players will be referred to the FIFA disciplinary committee to take the appropriate sanctions against them.Gerrard, who plays for Los Angeles Galaxy, and Pirlo, who is now with New York City, are both still FIFA registered.A Kuwait organising committee statement, quoted by local media, named Gerrard, Pirlo and a host of retired stars including former Italian internationals Allesandro Nesta and Gianluca Zambrotta, Jens Lehman of Germany, Englands Paul Scholes, Jamie Carragher and David James, Carlos Puyol and Michel Salgado of Spain, Brazilian Ronaldinho, Portugals Luis Figo and Deco and Robert Pires of France.Puyol and Pires have said on social media that they will be in Kuwait for the game to inaugurate the 60,000 capacity Al Jaber Stadium. The statement also said that Pierluigi Collina, once a top FIFA referee, would officiate at the game.FIFAs executive decided in September to suspend Kuwait unless it changed its sports law by October 15 so that the KFA and clubs could act independently. It is the third time since 2007 that FIFA has suspended Kuwait over government interference. The suspension has undermined Kuwaits bid to reach the 2018 World Cup finals. The action against Kuwait is an embarrassment for Sheikh Ahmad Fahad al-Ahmad al-Sabah, a FIFA executive member from the Gulf state. But Kuwait has also been suspended, for the third time in five years, by the IOC, which again discussed the Gulf states sports crisis at an executive meeting in Lausanne this week.We had an exchange of letters which have not been very helpful, 13 international federations have followed since our suspension, said IOC member Patrick Hickey. We are trying to find a peaceful solution, its embarrassing, he added. The IOC athletes commission members are determined to make sure athletes of the country dont suffer, it will be very much on our agenda, said Hickey.

Golf: Flawless Donaldson opens up three-shot lead

CHONBURI (AFP) - Ryder Cup star Jamie Donaldson from Wales fired a stunning nine-under par 63 to take a three-stroke lead in the opening round of the Thailand Golf Championship at the Amata Spring Country Club on Thursday.Donaldson, who secured the winning point for Europe at the 2014 Ryder Cup, enjoyed a faultless round playing exquisite golf in perfect conditions with little wind. His nearest challengers on 66 were Spains Sergio Garcia and two Thais, Chanat Sakulpolphaisan and Chinnarat Phadungsil. A shot further behind was another Thai, Natipong Srithong, and American Brett Munson.Another Ryder Cup star, Martin Kaymer of Germany, and the exciting young English prospect Matthew Fitzpatrick were among a group of five players on 68.I couldnt do anything wrong today, said Donaldson, who opened up with four straight birdies and sunk another five on the back nine. I never missed any fairways. However, he said he would not get carried away. Ill take it day by day and see what happens, he said. I just need to continue this form.He was particularly pleased as it was his first competitive round on the Amata Spring course. Its a great course and the weather was great too, he said.Garcia surged up the leaderboard with a spectacular back nine. After reaching the turn one-under, he went on to sink six birdies on the back nine, with just one bogey. That was a wonderful back nine, said Garcia, fresh from winning the Ho Tran Open in Vietnam last week.Actually, I played okay on the front nine but the putts just didnt go in, he said. Im feeling good and playing steady shots. Im in a good position going in to the next day.It was a good showing by the young Thai players. Chanat Sakulpolphaisan, 25, a native of Chonburi where the course is located, hit seven birdies and just the one bogey. He said he was surprised at his score as he had to qualify to play in the event.Law student Natipong Srithong, 22, who only turned professional in September, has enjoyed a great start to his career, having already won the Manila Masters last month. He had to take a university law exam on Monday but said it did not bother him.Kaymer said he just missed out on winning the tournament last year and was determined to put on a good display this time. Thats why I came back -- to win. Four-under par is a decent start and I fancy my chances, he said. One of the star attractions, big-hitting Bubba Watson, could not reproduce his Bahamas form where he won last week. He experienced a mixed round with five birdies and four bogeys to finish on 71.Local stars Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Thongchai Jaidee, had mixed fortunes. Aphibarnrat was going well but was derailed by a double-bogey at the 16th, to finish with a 69. Jaidee had to settle for a disappointing 73 along with Denmarks Thomas Bjorn.

Golf: Feng takes halfway lead at Dubai Masters

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - LPGA Tour star and defending champion Shanshan Feng of China lived up to her billing as the pre-tournament favourite as she took a two-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Dubai Ladies Masters on Thursday. The highest ranked player in the field, world number six Feng added a second successive bogey-free round of five-under par 67 to move to 10-under par after 36 holes. She has already won the tournament twice - in 2012 and 2014 - and is bidding to become the first three-time winner in the season-ending championship of the Ladies European Tour. Two shots behind Feng and in solo second place was British 52-year-old legend Laura Davies, who shot a second straight round of 68 despite playing through pain with a torn tendon in her left ankle.Thailands Pornanong Phatlum (68), the 2013 champion, was tied third at five-under par along with Swedens Caroline Hedwall (68),Feng, who started on the relatively easier back nine of the Majlis course, could not get her first birdie in the first five holes that included two par-5s. But she made back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, and then picked up three shots coming in.But the Chinese star revealed she was battling a strain in her neck, one which was serious enough to call for medical help on the 17th hole, her eighth. It was a little problem with the neck and the upper back. So I called for the physio. She came on the 17th hole, worked on it a little bit and it did not really bother the swing, Feng said.I think my ball-striking was not bad. I was leaving the balls a little bit shorter after I saw the physio. But I wasnt far away off the green. So I could still make the two putts.Made just a couple of birdies on the par 5s but I think this is just a course for birdies. So were not really thinking about bogeys. After a round that included five birdies and a bogey, Davies said her torn tendon could have played a positive role in her doing well so far in the tournament. The World Golf Hall of Famer said: Its only with the driver that I feel it. The irons, it doesnt matter. Sometimes with a 2-iron as well. If Im trying to hit a 2-iron I still have to load up on that left side but its just the driver.Im not 100 percent hitting it with the driver, but like I say, maybe thats a good thing because Im driving it quite straight and perhaps not lashing it as I hopefully will do again when this is fixed. It was good round today. Probably a better round than yesterday because of the wind. It was really tricky. I hit a lot of long irons into the par 4s because a lot of them were into the wind today. So, very pleased, and also 31 putts today, which is pretty good. The French duo of Ariane Provot (67) and Jade Schaeffer (71) were tied fifth at four-under par 140.Nanna Koerstz Madsen opened up a big gap on Emily Kristine Pedersen in the all-Dane battle for the Rookie of the Year honours.Madsen added a 73 to her overnight 70 to be tied 14th at one-under par, while Pedersen slipped way behind with a 78. However, Madsen needs to finish inside the top-two in the tournament to stand any chance of overtaking her compatriot.American internet sensation Paige Spiranac, who has nearly half a million followers on Instagram and was given a special invitation to play the tournament, missed the cut in her professional debut. The 22-year-old followed her 77 on Wednesday with a 79 on Thursday to be tied 101st on 156.

Badminton: Chen moves closer to another big final

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Chen Long, the world number one from China who is making a good job of escaping from the shadow of the greatest player of all time, made certain of qualifying for Saturdays semi-finals in Dubai with a gear-changing second win at the group stage the Super Series finals.Chen did that with an impressive mid-match acceleration in a 21-17, 21-12 win over Hu Yun, a boyhood friend from Hubei province who now represents Hong Kong and who unexpectedly took a 9-5 lead in the first game. But when Chen increased the speed of the rallies and combined it with some brilliant, breath-taking defence, he pulled back the deficit steadily and then hurtled to a 9-0 lead in the second game, effectively ending the match as a contest. These things are quite normal, reckoned Chen, who seems to see his widening capacity to vary his tactics as all part of an expected mosaic pattern too, albeit one which few can emulate.Already the winner of seven major titles this year, Chen is becoming a hotter favourite to score an eighth here, and a successful defence of the title in the BWF tours flagship event is one of the very few things which his legendary compatriot, Lin Dan, twice the Olympic mens singles champion, has not managed.Chens last group match is against Jan Jorgensen the world number two from Denmark, who has also qualified with a 21-17, 21-16 success against Tian Houwei, Chinas replacement for Lin Dan.Jorgensen showed how patient and perceptive he is in probing carefully for openings before launching ambushing attacks, and claims he will not try to conserve energy against Chen in the last group match tomorrow (Friday), even though both are already sure of progressing further.I played much better today, and have to try to do the same against him, Jorgensen said. Its important to keep playing your best. Earlier another Chinese player, Wang Yihan, the former leading woman, resisted defeat as resolutely as the repeated questions about when she will retire, coming from a game and 16-17 down to beat Ratchanok Intanon in a tussle of former world champions.Wang played close to her very best when she was in danger in the second game, taking five out of the last seven points to rescue herself and then getting on top and winning 19-21, 21-19, 21-11.She produced forcing, though tactically careful rallies in the crisis, but felt it was her mind-set which more than anything helped her through.I told myself that this is okay, that I just have to be positive, and that its still possible to do it, she said. After she had squeezed the contest into a decider she was by far the more consistent player, picking her moments to attack much better than her opponent.Although Wang has not won a big title this year she will not consider her future until after the Olympic Games next year.Meanwhile, she is now almost certain to qualify for the semi-finals, as she now has two wins, with just one more group match to come. On Wednesday she beat her Chinese compatriot Wang Shixian, the former world number one.Intanon, who saved four match points to beat Sung Ji-hyun of Korea on Wednesday, now has to recover from the disappointment of being so close to reaching the semi-finals today. But against Wang Shixian, her last group opponent, that may be as tough as it comes.

Double strike tightens New Zealand's grip

DUNEDIN (AFP) - New Zealand took command of the first Test against Sri Lanka on Friday with the tourists reeling at 38 for two at lunch on the second day in Dunedin. After resuming at 409-8, New Zealand added a further 22 runs to reach 431.Doug Bracewell was the last man out for a Test best 47, while for Sri Lanka Nuwan Pradeep finished with four for 112.Trent Boult and Neil Wagner then ripped into an inexperienced Sri Lankan top order that struggled to settle.Kusal Mendis, in his second Test, lasted 19 deliveries for just eight and debutant Udara Jayasundera faced six balls for one run. Dimuth Karunaratne, who was given a torrid time by Boult, survived to be 21 not out at lunch with Dinesh Chandimal on six. After the Sri Lankan bowlers had failed to get any joy out of the University Oval wicket, New Zealands four-pronged seam attack found bounce and movement delivering five maidens in the 18 overs bowled. Boult had Karunaratne in trouble in the first over but luck was with the batsman when he went to duck under a delivery, which clipped the toe of his bat and flew over the wicketkeeper for four. Two overs later Boult seduced edges from successive deliveries to Karunaratne that both fell short of the slip cordon. But when Boult turned his attention to Mendis he found an edge that went straight to BJ Watling behind the stumps.Wagner came into the attack to replace Boult and claimed Jayasundera with his fifth ball, again catching an edge than went to Watling.Wagner finished the morning session with one for nine and Boult one for 16 while Tim Southee conceded a miserly six runs from five overs.
