Djokovic eyes top spot after Wawrinka rout

Posted:

London (AFP) - Novak Djokovic moved within touching distance of ending the year as the world number one after crushing Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-0 at the ATP Tour Finals on Wednesday.Djokovic needs to win all three of his Group A matches to ensure he will hold off Roger Federer in the race for first place and the Serb secured the second of those victories with a ruthless 65-minute rout at Londons O2 Arena. The reigning Wimbledon champion will be guaranteed top spot if he beats Tomas Berdych on Friday in a match he also has to win to be certain of making the last four at the prestigious season-ending event.Wawrinkas loss means the Swiss world number four needs to defeat US Open winner Marin Cilic, thrashed 6-3, 6-1 by Berdych earlier on Wednesday, to have a chance of making the last four. After demolishing Cilic for the loss of two games on Monday, Djokovic has lost only five games during his first two matches.Djokovic has won his last 29 indoor matches, including 12 in a row at the Tour Finals, and he remains on course to become the first player since Ivan Lendl in the 1980s to win the Tour Finals three years in a row.It was a great match, no question. The opening three games were quite long but after that I managed to get back in the first set, Djokovic said.I swung through my shots and he made a lot of unforced errors. He wasnt close to his best and I succeeded very well with what I wanted to do.Berdychs win over Cilic meant Djokovic was unable to guarantee his place in the last four whatever his result, unlike Wawrinka, who started knowing a victory would send him into the last four with a match to spare. But Djokovic had dominated his head to head match-up with Wawrinka, winning 15 of their 18 meetings.- Opening salvo -With a semi-final place up for grabs, Wawrinka came out swinging and he landed an early blow with a break in the first game. But Djokovic is far too cool a customer to be rattled by that opening salvo and he broke back in the fourth game. That was the signal for Djokovic to step up a gear and he took 21 points from a possible 24 during a run of five successive games that brought him a 5-2 lead.Wawrinka finally halted Djokovics streak in the next game, but it was too late to save the set. There was no let-up from the Serb in the second set and he continued to overwhelm Wawrinka from the baseline as he broke in the first game. That shattered Wawrinkas resolve and the Swiss was blown away as took 12 of the final 13 games to leave his shell-shocked opponent shaking his head in disbelief as winner after winner flashed past him.Djokovics stroll continued a trend that has seen all eight singles matches won in straight sets with little drama to entertain the 17,500 capacity crowds.Berdych had been routed by Wawrinka in his opening match, but the Czech bounced back in style against Cilic and can still make the last four. Its not my first year. I have the experience of losing the first match in the past and I know how to come back. I think that was the biggest difference, Berdych said.Quizzed during an on-court interview about the daunting task of facing Djokovic, Berdych jokingly asked the crowd: Any tips? I will need some.I just want to try to bring my best tennis and well see what happens.Cilics second straight-sets defeat at the season-ending event means the Croatian has no chance of qualifying after winning just six games in his two matches. Its disappointing to play like this. I was not expecting it. But my body feels a little bit tired on the court, Cilic said.

Neymar, Messi shine as Dutch slump again

Posted:

Paris (AFP) - Barcelona teammates Neymar and Lionel Messi were both on target as Brazil and Argentina claimed international friendly wins Wednesday but struggling Netherlands slumped to another defeat. In Istanbul, Brazil defeated Turkey 4-0 as coach Dunga celebrated a fifth successive win since taking the hotseat following his countrys traumatic World Cup.The match, played out in front of a packed Sukru Saracoglu, also saw Turkey suffer a sixth match without a victory.Neymar opened the scoring after 19 minutes when he picked up a cross from Fernandinho before dribbling the ball into the area and stabbing it past a static Suleyman Demirel in the Turkish goal.Five minutes later it was 2-0 when defender Suat Kaya put through his own goal under pressure from Luiz Adriano who was trying to reach a cross from Danilo.Willian steered in the third just before the interval after a Neymar cross was not cleared with the Barcelona star adding his second on the hour mark after a neat one-two with Willian.I think Im in the best form of my career though I cant be satisfied. I shall keep on working hard to get even better, to keep on helping Barcelona and the Brazilian national side, Neymar told Globo TV.Carlos Tevez ended his three-year international exile as World Cup runners-up Argentina came from behind to beat a second-string Croatia 2-1 in London.Tevez last played for Argentina at the 2011 Copa America, having been frozen out by former coach Alejandro Sabella, but he made his comeback at the home of his old club West Ham after being recalled by new coach Gerardo Martino. The Juventus striker came on as a substitute for Sergio Aguero, who cancelled out Anas Sharbinis early opener for Croatia with a fortuitous equaliser before Lionel Messi scored the winner with a 57th-minute penalty.Argentina have now won three and lost one of their four friendly games since their 1-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup final. It was a first defeat in five games for Croatia, who have won their first four Euro 2016 qualifiers, but defeat was mitigated by the fact coach Niko Kovac had left his entire first XI back in Zagreb to prepare for Sundays encounter with Group H rivals Italy in Milan.Messis goal was the 45th of his international career. Our goals were really nice goals and they came after mounting pressure, said Martino. We still have to improve a lot, but there were some positive things. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands lost 3-2 to Mexico, four days out from a crucial Euro 2016 clash against Latvia which could lead to the resignation of coach Guus Hiddink should the Dutch lose again.Wednesdays loss, which saw Carlos Vela score twice for Mexico in his first appearance in three years, was Hollands fourth in five games since the World Cup.In other friendlies, Belgium beat Iceland 3-2 while Estonia edged Norway 1-0.

YouTube debuts subscription music service

Posted:

San Francisco (AFP) - YouTube on Wednesday introduced a long-rumored subscription music video service with ad-free access to tunes in a challenge to Spotify, Pandora, Apple and others.YouTube Music Key launched in a test, or beta, mode, in Britain, Spain, Italy, Finland, Portugal, Ireland, and the United States with free trial periods, and introductory monthly fees of $7.99.Thanks to your music videos, remixes, covers and more, youve made YouTube the biggest music service on the planet, the Google-owned YouTube music team said in a blog post.YouTube Music Key is designed to let users listen to music without ads; to keep playing music videos even if device screens are locked or other applications are in use, and to play music even when not connected to the Internet.Subscriptions to the new YouTube Music Key will come with access to Google Play Music service for mobile devices. The service is being launched first with invitations sent to big music fans, then will be made available worldwide, according to Google, which bought the video sharing platform in eight years ago in a deal valued at $1.65 billion.- Getting labels on board -YouTube recently inked a deal with a group of independent record labels as part of the behind-the-scenes work to provide content for Music Key.YouTube struck an agreement with Europe-based rights agency Merlin after months of negotiations, the Financial Times said Wednesday in a report citing sources familiar with the matter.Record labels representing 95 percent of the music industry have already signed up to the new terms but Merlin, which represents more than 20,000 labels from 39 countries, had been holding out.Contacted by AFP, Merlin declined to comment.Google also declined to comment on the report, but said that hundreds of major and independent labels have partnered with YouTube as it expands into a subscription service. The California-based Internet titan echoed an earlier statement that hopes YouTube will serve as a global platform for fans and artists to connect, and as a revenue source for the music industry.YouTube earlier this year threatened to block the videos of artists like Adele and Arctic Monkeys on its free site if they did not sign up to terms of the subscription service.YouTube is the worlds biggest online source of free streaming music and the site has about a billion users a month.Industry tracker eMarketer expects YouTube to rake in about $7.2 billion in ad revenue this year, up from $5.6 billion in 2013. More than half the money taken in this year will go to YouTube content partners, with the Google-owned service keeping about $3.24 billion, according to eMarketer.Online radio continues to gain popularity in the United States, with adults here spending an average of 39 minutes daily listening to it, the industry-tracker said.California-based Pandora was ranked the top source for streaming radio.Freemium models combining free ad-based access and fee-based subscriptions have become the norm in digital media -- Spotify, Pandora, and Hulu come to mind -- and theres no reason Google cant do the same with YouTube, said eMarketer senior analyst Paul Verna. The analyst expected advertising to remain the primary source of revenue at YouTube.YouTube chief Susan Wojcicki said at a technology conference in California last month that the ad-supported model is really great in the sense that it has enabled us to scale to a billion users (and that) anyone can access the content. But she added that there are going to be cases where people will say, I dont want to see the ads, or, I want to have a different experience.

Israel approves new settlements as Kerry looks to ease tensions

Posted:

Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel approved new settler homes in east Jerusalem on Wednesday despite mounting unrest, as US Secretary of State John Kerry was set for talks with the Palestinian leader on easing tensions. The new settlement construction was announced just hours after suspected Jewish extremists torched a West Bank mosque, in another development likely to inflame tempers in an already heated atmosphere.Months of unrest have escalated in recent days, spreading from annexed east Jerusalem to the West Bank and Arab communities across Israel, raising fears of a new Palestinian uprising. With no signs of tensions abating, Kerry was set to arrive in Jordan later Wednesday and have a private dinner with King Abdullah II before meeting with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Thursday. But so far no meeting with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been scheduled, the US State Department said.Ahead of Kerrys arrival, Abdullah took Israel to task by expressing his total rejection of its repeated aggressions and provocations in Jerusalem, a palace statement said.Abdullah raised particular concern about tensions at the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound, the third holiest site in Islam where Jordan has custodial rights.Abdullah urged global powers to step up peace efforts, warning against the continuation of Israels settlement policies. An Israeli committee meanwhile approved plans to build 200 homes in Ramot, a neighbourhood of annexed east Jerusalem, despite recent settlement announcements sparking outrage among the Palestinians. It is a decision which is going to cause great harm, city councillor Yosef Pepe Alalu told AFP.- Tense environment -The State Department sharply condemned the plans. We are deeply concerned by this decision, particularly given the tense situation in Jerusalem, said spokeswoman Jen Psaki. These decisions to expand construction have the potential to exacerbate this difficult situation on the ground, and they will not contribute to efforts to reduce the tension.Middle East Quartet envoy Tony Blair urged both Israeli and Palestinian leaders to call for restraint and an end to hostile and provocative acts, including settlement construction.UN chief Ban Ki-moon demanded both sides do everything possible to avoid further exacerbating an already tense environment.Tit-for-tat violence showed no signs of easing, with a pre-dawn arson attack on a mosque in a village between Ramallah and Nablus in the West Bank, which Palestinian security officials blamed on extremist Jewish settlers. The attack came two days after Palestinian knife attacks killed a settler in the southern West Bank and an Israeli soldier in Tel Aviv. When we got there, we couldnt even get close because the fire was raging so strongly, village council head Faraj Nassan told AFP.By the time the civil defence (firefighters) got there, the ground floor was completely burnt out.It was the second time in two years that a mosque in the village had been set alight.Overnight, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at an ancient synagogue in the Arab Israeli town of Shfaram, causing minor damage, police said. The structure is not currently used for worship.- Real test of leadership -The mosque attack came as Palestinian anger was already running high after Israeli troops shot dead a 22-year-old protester in the southern West Bank on Tuesday.Since the current round of violence began five months ago with the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers by militants, at least 17 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, according to an AFP count.Israeli Finance Minister Yair Lapid said the situation was a real test of leadership for both Abbas and Netanyahu. We must throw a bucket of cold water over the explosive situation... of the last few weeks, and not add fuel to the furnace.Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said it was too early to describe the wave of violence as a new Palestinian uprising, but warned the public to be alert for a possible further escalation.Meanwhile, Israel said Wednesday it will not cooperate with a UN inquiry into its 50-day war with rocket-firing militants in Gaza this summer.Israel will not cooperate with the commission because of its obsessive hostility against Israel and the words of its president against its leaders, said foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon. In August, Canadian lawyer William Schabas was named as the head of the UN commission, angering Israel, where he is widely regarded as hostile to the Jewish state over reported calls to bring Netanyahu before the International Criminal Court.

NATO:Russian troops in Ukraine amid fears of all-out war

Posted:

Donetsk (Ukraine) (AFP) - NATO on Wednesday accused Russia of sending tanks, troops and military hardware to east Ukraine, raising fears of renewed all-out fighting and calling into question the Minsk peace deal.Moscow denied the claims as unfounded and the deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Alexander Pankin, told an emergency Security Council meeting that the alliance was making another foray into propaganda. The United States warned it was ready to work with allies in Europe to slap more sanctions on Russia for supporting pro-Moscow separatists in east Ukraine, who have been battling Kiev since April. We have seen columns of Russian equipment, primarily Russian tanks, Russian artillery, Russian air defence systems and Russian combat troops entering into Ukraine, US General Philip Breedlove, NATOs commander in Europe, said in Sofia. We do not have a good picture at this time of how many. We agree that there are multiple columns that we have seen, he added. The claims come amid growing fears of a return to all-out conflict despite a two-month ceasefire which has stopped much frontline fighting but not shelling at strategic flashpoints. We are deeply concerned by the possibility of a return to full-scale fighting, UN Assistant Secretary-General Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen told the Security Council.Ukraines Defence Minister Stepan Poltorak said Kiev was preparing for a possible new round of fighting after seeing increased activity by Russia and pro-Moscow rebels in the east. The main task I see is to prepare for combat operations. We are doing this, we are readying our reserves, Poltorak said at the start of a cabinet meeting in Kiev.Observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) reported seeing a convoy of 43 unmarked military trucks -- five towing Howitzer heavy artillery pieces and another five towing multi-launch rocket systems -- travelling into the rebel stronghold of Donetsk on Tuesday. It was the latest in a string of recent sightings of unmarked trucks and heavy weapons heading towards the frontline in rebel-controlled areas.Pro-Moscow separatists in east Ukraine have been fighting Kiev since April in a war that has left more than 4,000 dead and driven hundreds of thousands from their homes.A peace agreement signed in Minsk in September has yet to take hold.Russia talks peace, but it keeps fueling war, US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power told the council meeting.Toyberg-Frandzen said the conflict may simmer in this way for months with sporadic low-level battles or could develop into a frozen and protracted conflict that would (last) for years or even decades to come.-US warns of more sanctions-Washington insisted Ukraine had the right to defend its territory and warned that a new round of sanctions against Russia was in story. We and our allies and partners would be prepared to broaden and deeping existing sanctions, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.Several hours of heavy artillery fire rocked Donetsk on Wednesday, the most intense fighting since the weekend. The explosions of mortars being fired from near the city centre towards government positions at the ruined airport continued throughout the morning but had calmed down by early afternoon, an AFP correspondent said.Ukraines military said one soldier had been killed and five wounded as its positions came under repeated shelling around the region over the past 24 hours.Government forces also accused the insurgents of trying to capture a strategic location along the volatile frontline, delineated as part of the ceasefire deal, north of the second-largest rebel stronghold Lugansk. With fears rising of all-out war, Ukraines central bank hiked interest rates Wednesday by 1.5% to 14% after inflation rose to nearly 20% last month, while the currency, the hryvnia, continued to tumble on money markets. The Ukraine crisis has sent relations between Russia and the West plummeting to their lowest point since the Cold War.Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to face pressure at a G20 summit in Brisbane from Saturday.Ukraine, supported by Western nations, accuses Russia of supplying pro-Kremlin separatists with the missile that shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in July. The disaster, which Moscow and the rebels blame on Ukrainian forces, killed all 298 people onboard, including 38 Australian citizens and residents.

Saudi oil minister denies crude price war

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Saudi Arabias oil minister on Wednesday rejected talk that the country was leading a price war in global oil markets as crude prices continue to sink.Talk of a price war is a sign of misunderstanding -- deliberate or otherwise -- and has no basis in reality, Ali Al-Naimi told a conference in Acapulco, according to the text of his speech.Naimi called recent talk of a change in the countrys strategy, in particular its cutting prices of Saudi oil to the US market, a great deal of wild and inaccurate conjecture.Saudi oil policy has remained constant for the past few decades, and it has not changed today, he said.We do not seek to politicize oil, nor do we collude against anybody. For us, it is a question of supply and demand. It is purely business.Last week Riyadh sent global oil prices tumbling when it cut its prices for crude for the US market while raising them for Asia, the countrys major outlet.Analysts guessed that the country wanted to strengthen its market share in the United States against a flood of domestic oil from shale deposits. Some speculated as well that the Saudis aimed to drive down the price of crude to a point where shale production was not economically viable, forcing US producers to curb output. The US shale oil boom has driven domestic production to record levels, nearly matching Saudi output and reducing the Middle East oil giants longstanding power as the global swing producer which can determine the direction of crude prices.Combined with slower growth in the global economy, the surge in US output especially has contributed to an oil glut and a plunge in prices, hitting hard the incomes of oil exporters. The price for benchmark Brent crude has sunk from over $112 a barrel in June to below $83 Tuesday.Markets were clearly not convinced on Wednesday, with Brent falling further to below the $82 line. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate meanwhile fell 0.8 percent to $77.30 a barrel, compared to the June high of $103.66.Naimi stressed the need for a continued dialogue between the Saudi-led OPEC cartel, which produces about one-third of the worlds crude, and other producers as well as consumers. We want stable oil markets and steady prices, because this is good for producers, consumers and investors, and also helps long-term global economic growth, especially developing nations, he said.
