Man United beats Arsenal in a thrilling contest to regain 4th position

Posted:

LONDON: (AFP) - A Kieran Gibbs own goal and a Wayne Rooney strike saw Manchester United return to the Premier Leagues top four with a bruising 2-1 victory at Arsenal on Saturday.Arsenal subjected Uniteds makeshift back-four to heavy pressure throughout the game at the Emirates Stadium, but Gibbss unwitting intervention gave the visitors a 56th-minute lead before Rooney added a late second.Arsenal substitute Olivier Giroud marked his comeback from a broken leg by slamming home in the 95th minute, but United held on to leave their rivals 15 points adrift of leaders Chelsea in eighth place. To compound matters, Arsene Wengers side lost key midfielder Jack Wilshere and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to injury, four days before an important Champions League home game with Borussia Dortmund. An injury blight obliged United coach Louis van Gaal to deploy a three-man defence of Chris Smalling, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett, and the visitors then saw left-back Luke Shaw limp off after turning his ankle.Arsenal peppered the visitors goal with shots, but United goalkeeper David de Gea kept them at bay, notably thwarting Wilshere and Danny Welbeck, who was making his first appearance against the club he left in September.Wilshere was forced off in the 55th minute after turning his right ankle in a challenge with McNair, and United struck barely a minute later.Szczesny collided with Gibbs as he came for Ashley Youngs left-wing cross and when Antonio Valencia drilled the ball back into the box, the prone Gibbs instinctively stuck out a leg, only to send the ball into his own net.Szczesny had to go off, with Emiliano Martinez coming on, and the Argentine was a virtual spectator until Angel di Maria freed Rooney to run through and chip home in the 85th minute.Giroud fired into the top-left corner from 20 yards mid-way through eight minutes of stoppage time, but United survived to give Van Gaal the first away win of his tenure.Earlier, Diego Costa scored again as Chelsea established a seven-point lead at the summit by comfortably beating 10-man West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.Costa scored his 11th goal of the season in the 11th minute, chesting down Oscars cross and volleying home, with Eden Hazard adding a second before Claudio Yacob was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Costa.

Messi levels Telmo Zarra's mark by scoring his 251st La Liga goal

Posted:

MADRID: (AFP) - Lionel Messi matched a 59-year-old record with his 251st La Liga goal to equal Telmo Zarras mark as the leading goalscorer in the history of the Spanish top flight. The Argentine curled home a trademark free-kick to reach the mark in just his 289th La Liga appearance and give Barcelona the lead against Sevilla. Legendary Basque striker Zarra scored his 251 goals for Athletic Bilbao during a 15-year career from 1940 to 1955.Messis strike ended an uncharacteristically long three-game goal drought in league action as Barca slipped to defeats against Real Madrid and Celta Vigo and had to come from behind to beat Almeria 2-1 before the recent international break. However, in between times, he had also equalled Real Madrid legend Rauls all-time record mark of 71 Champions League goals with a double against Ajax earlier this month.Barca boss Luis Enrique hailed the 27-year-old as the best player I have seen in my life after he hit that landmark in Amsterdam.Messi recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of his debut with the Catalan giants, a period which has seen him win 21 trophies and crowned World Player of the Year four times. However, he cast some doubt on his future with the club this week when he refused to rule out a move away from the Catalan capital before the end of his career. Football is full of unexpected twists and turns, he told Argentinean newspaper Ole.It is true that I said I would like to stay there forever, but sometimes not everything turns out the way you want.Messis Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who is just one shy of he and Raul in Champions League goals, lies ninth on the all-time La Liga list with two goals in Reals 4-0 win over Eibar on Saturday took him to 197 goals in just 177 games.

Swiss lead France 2 to 1 in Davis Cup final

LILLE, France (AP) - Roger Federer will have the chance to clinch the last big prize in tennis eluding him after putting Switzerland into a 2-1 lead against France in the Davis Cup final on Saturday. The 17-time Grand Slam champion and Stan Wawrinka swept aside Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the doubles, and Federer can secure the decisive point against Jo-Wilfied Tsonga in the first reverse singles on Sunday.Federer and Wawrinka, who won doubles gold at the 2008 Olympics, ended a four-game losing streak in Davis Cup at the right time, and posted their first win together in the event in three years. It was also their first doubles win on clay. They did not concede a single break and dominated the key points to withstand their opponents charge in the second set.The teams ended the opening singles on Friday level, after Wawrinka defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Federer lost in straight sets to Gael Monfils.Federers prediction that he would play better despite his bad back was right, as he served and moved far better on the clay.Stan has been unbelievably supportive, the coaching staff did a really good job, said Federer, who injured his back last week at the ATP Finals. Now Im going to rest and recover.Federer and Wawrinka converted their dominance to break for a 4-2 lead in the first set when Wawrinka unleashed a powerful forehand that Gasquet could hardly touch. With Federer improving as the match progressed, they sealed the set in just 28 minutes but were offered a tougher challenge in the second. The French returned better yet failed to seize their opportunities as the former Olympic champions saved a total of five break points.Federer did not look annoyed by his back at all, hitting some acrobatic smashes and stretching for volleys while racing forward and back with ease.Benetteau saved two break points with two consecutive winners in the ninth game but Gasquet then showed his nerves when he was let down by his serve two games later. The Swiss made no mistake and converted the first one, with Wawrinka firing a forehand down the line that sent the Swiss fans into rapture.Put on the ropes, the French fended off four break points early in the third set but another stunning forehand passing shot from Wawrinka gave the Swiss the decisive break in the fifth game.We came on the court to take that point, we were aggressive, we knew what we had to do, and we did a good job, said the fourth-ranked Wawrinka. We know each other so well.

Europe not at risk of sliding into full deflation

Posted:

EUROPE:(Reuters) - Europe is not at risk of sliding into full deflation but the current rate of inflation is dangerously low, European Central Bank Vice President Vitor Constancio said on Saturday. Many fear theeuro zone, where annual inflation fell far short of the ECBs medium-term target in October, could be set for a Japanese-style lost decade of deflation and recession. During a debate in centralItaly, Constancio said he did not think that in Europe there is the risk of falling into full deflation because nominal salaries would have to fall in all member countries and this cannot happen. It was not immediately clear what he meant by full deflation. Constancio echoed a pledge made by ECB President Mario Draghi on Friday to take action to raise inflation, which ran at 0.4 percent in the single currency bloc last month. This has to be done with monetary policy, Constancio said when asked who should intervene to raise prices. It is the ECBs responsibility. But living with inflation so close to zero is dangerous in itself, Constancio said, because it makes it harder to repay public and private debt, and impedes economic growth. He added that inflation measurement is often inaccurate and that if the reading is close to zero, in reality it is already at minus one.

North Korean student gets away with kidnap attempt in Paris

PARIS (AP) - A North Korean student with family ties to the regime in his country escaped a kidnapping bid in Paris, where he was studying, and is now in hiding, a French source with knowledge of the case said Saturday. The architecture student, identified only as Han, avoided the kidnapping attempt at a Paris airport where he was to be put on a plane for Pyongyang, North Koreas capital, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly on the sensitive matter. The failed bid to capture Han occurred in the first week of November, and he has been in hiding since then, the source said. It wasnt immediately clear if French authorities had played a role in the escape, how many kidnappers were involved, or where they are now.Han is reportedly the son of an aide of the once powerful uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The uncle, Jang Song Thaek, was considered the countrys second most powerful man before he was executed in December on treason charges.South Koreas spy agency believes North Korea also used a firing squad to execute several people close to the uncle, South Korean lawmaker Shin Kyung-min said in October after attending a closed-door agency briefing.Han has been attending LEcole Nationale Superieure dArchitecture de Paris at La Villette, in eastern Paris. He was presumably among about 10 North Korean architecture students who came to France in 2012 in a second wave of a student exchange.France and Estonia are the only two European countries that have not established formal diplomatic relations with North Korea. However, France and North Korea have opened offices of cooperation in each others countries to deal mainly with cultural and humanitarian issues, and France accepts a limited number of North Korean students and interns.

500 Germans including neo-Nazis stage anti-foreigner protest

BERLIN (AFP) - About 500 protesters, among them neo-Nazis and angry local residents, protested in the German capital on Saturday against the construction of a centre for refugees seeking political asylum.A large number of police kept watch over the protest march and over a large anti-fascist counter demonstration in the eastern Berlin working class district of Marzahn. The anti-foreigner protesters waved banners that read Were fed up, Not here, and Refugees from around the world, but no money for them. Placards also said We are the people and Wake up Dont complain, take action.Demonstrators denounced the lack of consultation of local residents about the refugee centre and demanded protection for us and our children, while some chanted We are not Nazis but people.Germany, which has become Europes top destination for asylum seekers, expects 200,000 arrivals this year, almost 60 percent more than last year, which already saw a jump of two-thirds over 2013.Those seeking political asylum come mainly from war-torn Syria, but also Iraq and Afghanistan.Across Germany, former army barracks and school buildings have been requisitioned and mobile housing and even tents set up to house the refugees.

Albania opens secret bunker built by communists

Posted:

TIRANA, Albania (AP) -- A gigantic, secret bunker that Albanias communist regime built underground decades ago to survive a nuclear attack by the Soviet Union or the United States has been opened to the public for the first time.On Saturday, Prime Minister Edi Rama led visitors, including Western ambassadors, on a tour of the never used 106-room, five-story bunker. It was built by the late communist dictator Enver Hoxha near Tirana, the capital, in the 1970s to prepare for a possible nuclear attack by American imperialism or Soviet social-imperialism.Hoxha died in 1985. The communist regime was toppled in 1990.Rama said the bunker was opened ahead of Albanias World War II liberation day this month. The government plans to use it as a tourist attraction and an exhibition space for artists.

'Moment of truth' nears in Iran nuclear talks

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry said Saturday serious gaps remained in talks between Iran and world powers in Vienna as a European source said it looked impossible to strike a comprehensive nuclear deal by Mondays deadline. Were working hard, Kerry said, and we hope were making careful progress, but we have big gaps, we still have some serious gaps, which were working to close.Speaking as he met German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Kerry said he would not say anything substantive about the discussions while theyre going on, but a lot of serious work is going on by a lot of people.Kerry, who on Friday postponed a trip to Paris to remain in Vienna, later met Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Saturday afternoon, their fourth meeting in three days.Steinmeier, arriving in the Austrian capital earlier Saturday, said that the final weekend of talks, after months of negotiations, was a moment of truth. At stake is a historic deal in which Iran would curb its nuclear activities in exchange for broad relief from years of heavy international economic sanctions. It could end a 12-year standoff with the West that has even raised the threat of Israeli military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities. The gap remains big... There now needs to be a political decision, an Iranian source told AFP on condition of anonymity, putting the onus on the world powers to make concessions. The differences were such that Britain and Iran have raised the possibility -- as expected by many analysts -- that a final deal would not be reached by Mondays deadline, and that the negotiations could be extended.Kerry said in Paris this week that no such extension -- which could include a new interim deal -- was being discussed. An earlier one was extended in July by four months.Full deal physically impossibleBut a European source close to the negotiations said the parties have made no significant progress in the talks and the Iranians will have to move in a substantial way in order to reach a full agreement. The goal is to reach a precise agreement... At this stage the idea that we can wrap up the whole thing (by Monday) is physically impossible, the source told journalists on condition of anonymity.Even if we reach a political agreement, the technical annexes will not be ready, the source said. The European source suggested that an eventual political agreement would necessarily be followed by detailed and difficult negotiations. The United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany have been locked in talks with Iran since February to turn an interim accord reached a year ago into a lasting agreement by November 24.Such a deal is aimed at easing fears that Tehran will develop nuclear weapons under the guise of its civilian activities. The Islamic Republic hotly denies such an aim and insists its programme is entirely peaceful.British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and his French counterpart Laurent Fabius also joined the talks on Friday. Both have since left but were expected to return. It was unclear when or whether Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, a key player in the talks, might also arrive.Earlier this week the head of the Russian delegation said Lavrov would come only if there was serious progress.Lavrov said from Moscow on Friday that all the elements are already on the table for a deal and that all that was missing was political will.Kerry on Friday updated Lavrov by phone. Kerry has also talked with the foreign ministers of several Gulf states and with those of Turkey and Canada, aides said.Complex dealSome areas under discussion appear provisionally settled in what would be a highly complex deal that would run for many years, even decades. But two key issues remain: enrichment -- a process that renders uranium suitable for peaceful uses but also, at high purities, for a weapon; and the pace of the lifting of sanctions.Iran wants to massively ramp up the number of enrichment centrifuges -- in order, it says, to make fuel for a fleet of future reactors -- while the West wants them dramatically reduced.

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Saturday demanded the Prime Minister (PM), Interior Minister, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief Justice (CJ) to take notice of the former chief of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Munawar Hassan’s speech that allegedly provoked youth to be aggressive.Coordination Committee of MQM both in Pakistan and London called a combined meeting on short notice and condemned Hassan’s speech. The committee urged the government, CJ, COAS to take immediate notice of Hassan’s alleged provocative speech. The committee agreed on the fact that Pakistan is currently struggling against terrorism on various platforms and Hassan’s speech in this time was highly inappropriate.Reportedly, the MQM members said that Hassan provoked the youth of the country to kill and commit murder of anybody who falls out of shariah. They said that his speech once again showed the real purpose behind establishment of JI and its secret agenda. They also said that its not difficult to understand now that who is representing Daash in the country. The committee said that the relations of JI with the terrorists who have been killed in the recent drone strikes in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) proves JI to be coordinating with Al-Qaeda for terrorism in the country. The committee urged the PM, CJ, COAS, Interior Minister, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) and Chief of Air Staff (CAS) to take immediate notice of Munawar Hassan’s speech.

Hungary teachers protest against cuts, reforms

BUDAPEST (AFP) - Thousands of Hungarian teachers demonstrated in Budapest on Saturday against Prime Minister Viktor Orbans government, demanding a stop to funding cuts and dialogue over controversial education reforms. The approximately 2,000 teachers said they have been excluded by the government from talks on an overhaul of Hungarys education sector since Orban took power in 2010.The protests main organisers, the Teachers Union of Hungary (TUH), also urged parliament not to accept the proposed 2015 budget that goes to vote in December.Spending cuts in the budget would lead to mass layoffs, school closures, and less children staying in school, Gallo Istvanne, TUH head told AFP before handing over a petition at the Ministry calling for more dialogue with the government.Andris Kovesdy, a 36-year-old secondary school teacher, told AFP that if the reforms and cuts continue he would not send his two young children to school.No-one from headmasters to parents has any say on anything anymore. Everything is centralised, he said. The demonstration was the latest in a series of anti-government protests to take place since October when tens of thousands marched to demand the scrapping of a proposed tax on internet usage. The unusual mass demonstrations forced Orban to scrap the plan in his first major policy retreat since 2010.Since then, large protests have also taken place against corruption in Hungarys Tax Authority and against Orbans policies generally in a so-called Day of Indignation last week.

Anti-government protests erupt in Albania's capital

TIRANA, Albania (AP) -- Tens of thousands of Albanians protested on Saturday against their governments economic policies, including tax and energy price increases. The demonstration on the main boulevard of Tirana, the capital, also demanded action against the countrys unemployment rate of nearly 18 percent. The protest, which ended peacefully at mid-afternoon, was held by supporters of the main opposition Democratic Party and its leader, Tirana Mayor Lulzim Basha. He has accused the governing Socialists of taking the country into recession, and his partys legislators have been boycotting Parliament since September, saying the coalition government is ignoring their complaints. The country is in recession and the recession was caused by the government, Basha said in a speech to the protesters from a podium raised in front of Prime Minister Edi Ramas office. Tax increase is no solution. The Democratic Party says that Albanias coalition government has broken electoral pledges by increasing taxes and electricity fuel prices. The opposition also accuses the government of having inflated government officials expenses.Dont give to the oligarchs what you take from the people and citizens, said Basha, pledging continued protests and opposition for our rights, to save the country.Ramas Socialist party swept to power in June 2013, pledging to create new jobs. However, unemployment stood at 17.7 percent in the second quarter of 2014.Rama has accused the nations previous Democratic Party administration of increasing the countrys public debt, imposing failed energy and tax policies, and granting up to $700 million in loans to private businesses that remain unpaid. In June the European Union granted Albania candidate status, a step toward launching talks regarding full membership in the bloc.
