Obama vows to 'get the job done' with Republicans

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama and the incoming Republican Senate majority leader pledged Wednesday to try and turn a divided government into a force of good rather than chronic inaction, a day after sweeping Republican gains in midterm elections. Yet both warned of veto showdowns as well.Obama said he heard the message from voters who on Tuesday put Republicans in power in the U.S. Senate and extended their majority in the House of Representatives, in a clear repudiation of the presidents leadership. There is no doubt that Republicans had a good night, the president said at the White House.Obama said he is eager to hear Republican ideas for governing together, citing construction of roads, bridges and other facilities as one area ripe for cooperation. He said expanded trade was another.Tuesdays vote gives Republicans momentum heading into the 2016 presidential race, which becomes the focus of American politics for the next two years. At issue now is whether Obama, congressional Democrats and the newly robust Republican majorities will be able to break the legislative gridlock that has gripped the U.S. capital in recent years.Immigration, which has been seen as an area for potential agreement, immediately emerged as an early irritant.Obama said that unless Congress takes action by the end of the year, he will order a reduction in deportations of working immigrants living in the country illegally. He made his pledge a short while after Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell warned the president against acting unilaterally to address the nations immigration system.McConnell, who will become the Senate majority leader when the new Congress takes over in January, said any executive action that Obama might take on immigration would only antagonize Republicans. He said the new Republican majority in the Senate wants to act on immigration. Its like waving a red flag in front of a bull to say if you guys dont do what I want Im going to do it on my own, McConnell said at a news conference in Kentucky, where he won re-election.McConnell said he spoke with Obama on Wednesday and says he looks forward to finding areas where Republicans and Democrats can agree, specifically citing trade agreements and rewriting the tax code.Beyond that, he made it clear Congress will vote on legislation to approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada through the United States, and work to repeal portions of the health care law that stands as Obamas signature domestic accomplishment. He said a tax on medical devices and a mandate for individuals to purchase health insurance are Republican targets.Obama ruled out ending the requirement for purchasing of health care, a part of the health law Republicans repudiate as a government overreach. But he pointedly did not reject repeal of the tax, which many Democrats as well as Republicans have already signaled they are ready to jettison.Republicans are also expected to mount a major attack on federal deficits. With lawmakers planning to return to Washington next week, Obama invited congressional leaders to a meeting Friday.Obama could use the presidents veto power if Republicans pass bills he opposes, such as a repeal of the health care law. Overriding a presidential veto requires a two-thirds vote in each chamber of Congress, an unlikely scenario.McConnell has been a severe critic of Obama, but has also helped broker bipartisan deals that ended last years government shutdown and twice averted federal default. He promised Wednesday that there will be no government shutdown or default on the national debt. Still, he said veto showdowns are also possible in the two-year era of divided government just ahead.McConnell, famously taciturn, smiled and joked with reporters one day after the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. He and House Speaker John Boehner will have the authority to set the congressional agenda. The Election Day thumping of the Democratic Party is a low point for the 53-year-old president, who electrified the world with his election in 2008 as the first African-American president and was comfortably re-elected in 2012. Though Democrats lost the House in 2010, partly in a backlash to his health care overhaul, this will be the first time Obama must also deal with a Republican-led Senate.Republicans picked up a least seven Senate seats, giving them at least 52 in the 100-member Senate.Republicans had made Obamas presidency the core issue of their campaigns, even though he wasnt on the ballot. They tapped into a well of discouragement at a time many Americans are upset with a sluggish economic recovery and are besieged by troubling news, such as the spread of Ebola and the rapid rise of Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.Nearly two-thirds of voters interviewed after casting ballots said the U.S. was seriously on the wrong track. Only about 30 percent said the U.S. was headed in the right direction. In the House, Republicans were on track to meet or exceed the 246 seats they held during Democrat President Harry S. Trumans administration more than 60 years ago.The outcome offered parallels to the final midterm election of Republican George W. Bushs presidency, when Democrats won sweeping victories amid voter discontent with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

US sends long-held Guantanamo prisoner to Kuwait

Posted:

MIAMI (AP) - A Kuwaiti held at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for nearly 13 years was sent back to his homeland Wednesday, the first release based on the determination of a review panel that has been re-evaluating some men previously classified by the government as too dangerous to release.Fawzi al-Odah had been told his release was imminent but didnt know the date until shortly before he boarded the flight back to his country from the base in southeast Cuba, his lawyer, Eric Lewis, said. The 37-year-old al-Odah had been the focus of an arduous battle to secure his release that had the support of his government. Lewis, who spoke to him about a week before the departure, said the prisoner just wanted to get on with life.Theres no bitterness, theres no anger, Lewis said. Theres just excitement and joy that he will be going home.Al-Odah faces a minimum of one year at a militant-rehabilitation center on the grounds of a Kuwaiti prison under the transfer agreement. Lewis said that after six months al-Odah will be eligible to leave for part of the day to work or see family. His transfer brings the detention center population to 148 and is the first since May, when President Barack Obama angered Congress by trading five Taliban prisoners for captive Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl without notifying lawmakers.Al-Odah has been at Guantanamo since February 2002, one of the first prisoners brought to the base on suspicion of links to al-Qaida or the Taliban. His father, Khalid al-Odah, said in several interviews with The Associated Press over the years that his son was only a teacher in Afghanistan who had been wrongly turned over to the U.S. authorities in exchange for a bounty.Sometimes my wife calls my other son Fawzi. Other times I wake up in the middle of the night and find her sleeping in Fawzis room, the father said in a 2005 interview. Its an unbearable sadness most of the time. The Kuwaiti government hired high-profile lawyers and lobbyists to push for the release of a dozen of its citizens at Guantanamo, an effort set back when one carried out a suicide bomb attack in Iraq in April 2008.An Obama administration task force charged with evaluating all the prisoners at Guantanamo placed al-Odah and another Kuwaiti among a group slated for indefinite law of war detention. The men in this group cant be prosecuted, typically because there is not enough evidence, but the government considers them too dangerous to release. The administration also set up a Periodic Review Board that has been slowly re-evaluating the prisoners with parole-style hearings to determine if some can be released as part of an overall effort to eventually close the detention center. In July, the board determined that al-Odah had most likely undergone terrorist training in Afghanistan and may have fought alongside the al-Qaida or the Taliban. The board, however, decided he had only a low level of training, did not have a leadership position in either group and could be released under certain conditions. The board has cleared a handful other detainees but they have not yet been released. The board determined that Faez al-Kandari, the last remaining Kuwaiti at Guantanamo, should still be held. His military lawyer, Air Force Lt. Col. Barry Wingard, said Wednesday that he saw no immediate prospects for the release of his client.

Nearly 400 killed in 3 weeks of Libya fighting

Posted:

TRIPOLI (AP) - Fighting between forces loyal to Libyas elected government and a loose alliance of Islamist and regional militias has killed nearly 400 people across the country in the past three weeks, a medical official and a militia commander said on Wednesday. The worst turmoil since longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown by a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 has left the country bitterly divided, with the internationally-recognized government confined to the town of Tobruk in the far east and an Islamist-dominated rival government in the capital Tripoli. In the mountainous town of Kikla to the south of Tripoli local armed youth supporting the Tripoli militias have been clashing with government-allied forces mainly hailing from the western town of Zintan.A commander allied to the Tripoli militias said at least 140 people have been killed and more than 300 wounded in the Kikla fighting, which has displaced tens of thousands of residents in recent weeks. In the eastern city of Benghazi, government-allied forces, including those led by former Gen. Khalifa Hifter, have been battling more radical Islamist militias for control of the city since mid-October. The Islamic militants there include Ansar al-Shariah, which has been blamed for the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission that left Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead.A medical official said the fighting in Benghazi has claimed 252 lives since Oct. 15. Both the official and the militia commander in the west spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.Benghazi, which was the cradle of the Arab Spring-inspired uprising that ended Gadhafis four-decade rule, has been paralyzed by the fighting, with schools closed, streets sealed by armed civilians and frequent airstrikes and shelling. In southern Libya, one of the countrys main oil fields, al-Sharara, has been shut down amid clashes between the Tuareg and Tabu, two ethnic minorities, an oil official said. He added that the field produces 340,000 barrels a day for local consumption. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists. In recent months Libyas oil production has amounted to just 800,000 barrels per day, half of its pre-uprising output. In Tripoli meanwhile, residents awoke to find that a large statue in a central square had disappeared. The culture ministry of the Islamist-backed government said the statue had been stolen, denouncing the act as an attempt to erase the history, monuments and features of Libya. The decades-old statue depicts a naked woman with her back to the sea and her arm around the neck of a deer. Ultraconservative Islamists -- who view the depiction of humans or animals as sinful -- have tried to vandalize the statue in recent years. Also on Wednesday, Human Rights Watch said it had found evidence of the use of land mines in the fighting in Tripoli. It said anti-personnel mines were found in the Tripoli airport, which the Islamist-allied Libyan Dawn militia captured from the Zintan militias in August. The international rights group said it was not able to determine which militias used the land mines. It cited reporting by television networks, including Qatar-based Al-Jazeera, which showed footage in September of Libyan Dawn militiamen clearing land mines at the Tripoli international airport, which had been the scene of heavy fighting for weeks.Human Rights Watch said the mines were looted from Gadhafis arsenals during the uprising.

Heavy rains kill 12 in Haiti, cause flooding

PORT-AU-PRINCE (AP) - Twelve people have died in Haiti as a result of heavy rains unleashed by a cluster of storms in the northern Caribbean, authorities said Wednesday.Cap-Haitien Mayor Yvon Alteon said four more bodies had been found, in addition to the eight deaths reported earlier. He said that some 5,000 people were in shelters and that flooding at the airport forced the cancellation of several flights.Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe said the government would spend about $740,000 to help communities affected by the rains and distribute food and water-purifying equipment. We share the pain and sorrow of all the families who became victims of the floods, he said, adding that a group of government officials were traveling to Haitis northern region on Wednesday to assess the damage.Authorities said earlier that multiple crops were damaged and that numerous animals including goats, cows and chickens have died.Heavy flooding also was reported in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Police in Puerto Rico said a 51-year-old tourist identified as Reynald Haines drowned after currents swept him away at a beach in the popular tourist district of Condado. Police said they did not immediately know where he was from.A high surf advisory was in effect for the region. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storms were expected to strengthen slightly as they moved northwestward.

Messi brace equals record as Barca progresses

Posted:

MILAN (AP) - Lionel Messi scored twice to draw level with Raul Gonzalez as the Champions Leagues all-time leading scorer on Wednesday, as Barcelona won 2-0 at Ajax to reach the knockout stage along with Group F leader Paris Saint-Germain.Bayern Munich also progressed, beating Roma 2-0 to maintain its perfect record, while Porto won by the same scoreline at Athletic Bilbao to join the Bundesliga club in the last 16.Messi is absolutely the best player I have ever seen as player or coach, said Barcelona coach Luis Enrique. It was a miserable night for English sides with nine-man Manchester City losing 2-1 at home to CSKA Moscow to slip to the bottom of Group E and Chelsea missing a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Maribor in Group G.Sporting Lisbon blew that group wide open as it came from behind to beat Schalke 4-2, while Luiz Adriano scored a second-half hat trick to help Shakhtar Donetsk humiliate BATE Borisov 5-0 and stay second behind Porto in Group H.Messi scored his 70th Champions League goal in the 36th minute with a soft header after Ajax failed to clear a free kick and then linked up with substitute Pedro Rodriguez for his second of the night in the 76th.Ajax played the last 20 minutes with 10 men after defender Joel Veltman was sent off for his second yellow card.PSG beat Apoel Nicosia 1-0 to remain a point ahead of Barcelona, with Edinson Cavani scoring the only goal of a scrappy game after just 57 seconds.Manchester City is on the verge of tumbling out of the group stage following two goals from Seydou Doumbia either side of a Yaya Toure free kick.Citys halftime substitute Fernandinho was sent off in the 70th for two bookable offences, and Toure followed for pushing Roman Eremenko. Its very difficult to understand why we played so badly, City coach Manuel Pellegrini said. Really, we didnt play. The first half especially, we didnt see the team we normally see.City is two points behind CSKA and Roma. The Italian team was keen to avoid a repetition of its 7-1 mauling at the hands of Bayern last time out and managed to restrict the five-time champion to two goals, by Franck Ribery and Mario Goetze, either side of halftime.Maribor was unrecognizable from the side crushed 6-0 by Chelsea two weeks ago and claimed a deserved lead when Agim Ibraimi curled a beautiful shot into the top corner five minutes into the second half.Nemanja Matic leveled from close range 17 minutes from time and Chelsea had the chance to take all three points when Eden Hazard was fouled for an 85th minute spot-kick, but the Belgians effort was too central and Jasmin Handanovic saved.Chelsea still leads Group G with eight points, three ahead of Schalke, with Sporting a point further back following its first win of the tournament this season. Maribor has three points.Islam Slimanis 17th-minute own goal from a deflection handed Schalke the lead, but Sporting equalized just under 10 minutes later through Naby Sarrs glancing header.Goals from Jefferson and Nani put Sporting in front and, although Dennis Aogo pulled one back two minutes from time, Slimani sealed it in stoppage time.In Bilbao, Porto forward Yacine Brahimi atoned for his first-half penalty miss with an exquisite solo effort to set up Jackson Martinez for the 56th minute opener. Brahimi then sealed the win with the easiest of goals after a gaffe by goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz. As well as taking his tally to nine Champions League goals this season, Luiz Adriano also set up both of Shakhtars other goals for captain Darijo Srna and Alex Teixeira.BATE right-back Anri Khagush was sent off after the halftime whistle had gone, earning a second yellow card in less than a minute for arguing with the referee.

Bayern beat Roma 2-0 in Champions League

Posted:

MUNICH (AP) - Bayern Munich cruised past Roma 2-0 on Wednesday to make sure of advancing to the knockout stage of the Champions League.Goals by Franck Ribery and Mario Goetze on either side of halftime also secured first place in Group E for the five-time champion, with two matches to spare.Bayern won in Rome 7-1 two weeks ago and dominated again, but this time Roma defended better, without much ambition in attack.Roma began the match with Francesco Totti, Gervinho and Miralem Pjanic on the bench, while Bayern rested Thomas Mueller. Bayern winger Arjen Robben missed the match with a stomach problem.Bayern now has 12 points from four wins in four matches. Roma and CSKA Moscow have four points each. Moscow won 2-1 at Manchester City, which has two.Bayern went ahead in the 38th, when Ribery sent David Alaba racing down the left flank. The Austria international played the ball back to Ribery and the winger slotted home, with the ball bouncing off the inside of the post into the net.Goetze secured Bayerns victory in the 64th after a cross from Robert Lewandowski. Goetze displayed outstanding control to lift the ball softly past Roma goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski. We knew it wouldnt be that easy as in Rome, Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said. They defended well, often with six men, and it wasnt easy to create chances.Ribery, starting only his second match after a knee injury, said Roma defended well in the first half, when Bayern had few chances apart from the goal. But we played better in the second half and its been a nice week for us, Ribery said.Lahm narrowly missed the target and a chance to make it a three-goal lead and Alabas free kick sailed wide.Gervinho came on late in the game and created Romas only decent opportunity, setting up Radja Nainggolan, but Manuel Neuer produced an outstanding save to deny Roma.Bayern was never forced to switch into a higher gear and Roma rarely managed to hold the ball long enough to threaten the German champion.Pep Guardiolas team became the first German side to make sure of winning a Champions League group with two matches to spare.

Rosberg looking to turns things around in Brazil

Posted:

SAO PAULO (AP) - Nico Rosberg knows he will need some help to overcome Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton for the Formula One title. The Brazilian Grand Prix may be where he gets some.Hamilton won his first world title in a dramatic race in Brazil in 2008, but since then he hasnt had much luck at the Interlagos track in Sao Paulo. He failed to finish the race in two of the last three years because of collisions or mechanical problems, and was only ninth a year ago. He has never finished better than third at the track.Hamilton has a 24-point lead over Rosberg with two races left, meaning he can secure the drivers title with consecutive second-place finishes. A third-place finish in Brazil on Sunday and a second in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix also would be enough. Its a comfortable advantage considering the British driver has won five in a row and Mercedes has finished 1-2 in 10 of the 17 races so far.My record at Interlagos hasnt actually been the best so far in terms of results, though, with only one podium all the way back in 2009, Hamilton said. Im hoping this weekend will be the one to change that. The championship wont be decided in Brazil no matter what, but Rosberg needs to win the race at Interlagos and hope that Hamilton struggles so he can reduce the points-deficit and head to Abu Dhabi with a better chance of winning the title. Now its up to me to make the most of these last two races and capitalize on any opportunity, Rosberg said. It will be tough, but Im going to give it absolutely everything Ive got right up to the flag in Abu Dhabi. The 29-year-old German finished fifth at Interlagos last year, four spots ahead of his teammate. Another setback for Hamilton in Brazil this weekend could turn the title race in Rosbergs favor again and give him the chance to lift the trophy with a victory in the final grand prix.Ive got a mixed record at this circuit but its one I really enjoy as its usually a really action-packed race, Rosberg said. It would be great to give my title challenge a final boost with a good result before we head to the showdown in Abu Dhabi.Hamilton, a 10-time winner this season, wont change his strategy despite his advantage going into the decisive races, but said he expects Rosberg to come on attack mode from the beginning.I expect the best from him always. I have to assume that he is going to come back strong this time, the 29-year-old Hamilton said. I just have to keep going as hard as I can in these last two races. Ill be trying to win, as always.Rosberg has finished second 10 times this season, including in the last three races. His last victory was at home in the German GP in July, and not being able to win again in the final part of the championship has cost him a lot in the drivers standings. He started from the pole in two of the last three races but wasnt able to stay in front of Hamilton. He was a bit too cautious, especially if the one behind you (Hamilton) is pushing and is on the same tires, said Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. For Nico it is a pretty difficult situation, as he has to win the two remaining races and hope that Lewis finishes worse than P2 or that he retires.Rosberg is fighting for the F1 championship for the first time in his career.

Zimbabwe 331-5, trail Bangladesh by only 102

KHULNA (AP) - Hamilton Masakadzas career-best 154 not out helped Zimbabwe cruise to 331-5 and trail Bangladesh by only 102 runs on the first innings after three days of the second test on Wednesday.Masakadza, the No. 3 batsman, was joined by wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva at 189-5 in the shaky second session, and together they put on 142 at three an over, going unbeaten through the last session. They dismantled the Bangladesh bowlers on a placid deck which offered little for the spin-heavy host team.In response to Bangladeshs 433, Zimbabwe has put up its best score since April 2013, when it made 389 against Bangladesh in Harare.Masakadzas fourth test century eclipsed his previous best of 119 against the West Indies in his debut test in 2001.Chakabvas unbeaten 75 was also his career-best knock.Zimbabwe, 53-1 overnight, lost only one wicket in the morning, opener Brian Chari for 25.Resuming on 15, Masakadza survived two near-dismissals, but Shamsur Rahman missed both catches at first slip.Masakadza was still on 15 when he edged a Rubel Hossain delivery in the second over, then offered another possible catch off legspinner Taijul Islam on 19 in the next over.Masakadza made Bangladesh pay the price for the misfields, playing some attractive strokes around the wicket with 17 fours and two sixes.Bangladesh struck back in the middle session through legspinner Shakib Al Hasan, who dismissed captain Brendan Taylor for 37, Craig Ervine for 17 and Elton Chigumbura for 1, to raise the prospect of Bangladesh taking a big lead. But Masakadza resisted them from taking the advantage. He brought up his century off 215 balls just before tea, and by stumps had seen off 316 balls.Shakib was the leading wicket-taker with 3-70 while Taijul claimed 2-94.

On what grounds PM should be disqualified? Asks Justice Osmani

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News): Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmani on Wednesday asked that on what grounds should the PM be declared ineligible when according to the law whoever sacked for slandering judiciary or Pakistan Army would be ineligible.Usmani remarked this while hearing a petition seeking ineligibility of Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif in a bench of three headed by the Chief Justice (CJ) of Pakistan Jawwad S Khawaja. He asked counsel for Ishaq Khan Khakwani, Attorney General Irfan Qadir that which court has declared the PM a criminal and that if he wanted Nawaz to face trial in the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP). He further said that a thief should not be a member of the Parliament of Pakistan and that the law also stated that a person leading an extravangant life could not be a part of the parliament. The CJ said that the court has nothing to do with the PM’s eligibility or ineligibility and that even if 50 members were ineligible, the court’s verdict would strictly have been as per the law. He also said that according to the law, matter of slandering the army was not a ‘political’ question and that tagging it as a ‘political’ question would not let the judiciary off the responsibility.Qadir said that the CJ’s application for separation from the bench was not being heard, in response to which, Khawaja said that Qadir did not want to see him as head of the bench whereas the other applicant, Gohar Nawaz Sindhu demanded the CJ to be part of the bench.
