Tennis: Serena powers through at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Top seed Serena Williams stepped up her comeback from a 14-year Indian Wells boycott by storming into the fourth round with a 6-2, 6-0 demolition of error-prone Zarina Diyas on Sunday. The 33-year-old American will face either compatriot Sloane Stephens or two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova in the next round in the two-week hardcourt tournament in the California desert.World number one Williams needed just 53 minutes to dismiss Diyas, blasting six aces and breaking the world number 32 six times in front of a crowd of 10,500 at the Tennis Garden stadium. This is going in the right direction, Williams said. I was able to be a little more consistent today. I feel glad to still be in the tournament.Diyas had seven double faults and committed a rash of unforced errors, especially in the final game, when she had three in a row to bow out in calamitous fashion. Williams is playing in her first tournament since winning a sixth Australian Open crown and a 19th Grand Slam title in January. At 33 years 127 days, she became the second oldest Grand Slam winner of the Open Era after Martina Navratilova at the 1990 Wimbledon. The American looked more relaxed against Diyas than she did in her first match on Friday when she survived a tough contest against the versatile Monica Niculescu for a 7-5, 7-5 victory.Williams won the Indian Wells crown in 1999 at age 17 and again in 2001 when she rallied to beat Kim Clijsters in the final 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 after a controversial walkover when Venus Williams pulled out of the sisters semi-final at the last minute with an injury.Serena said earlier in the week that she is trying to forget the events of 2001, when the then 19-year-old was booed during the Clijsters final. Some fans had accused her of rigging matches against her sister.Last years Indian Wells runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska became the first big name to fall in the womens field, as the seventh seed lost 6-4, 6-4 to Britains Heather Watson. In mens action Sunday, Canadian sixth seed Milos Raonic beat Simone Bolelli 6-3, 6-4; Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria outlasted Australias Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (7/2), 3-6, 7-6 (7/4) and Robin Haase defeated Swiss seventh seed Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Football: Rooney adds punch to United's show of strength

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Wayne Rooney ensured Manchester United packed a punch as they tightened their grip on a top-four place with an impressive 3-0 victory over Tottenham on Sunday. After going out of the FA Cup against Arsenal last Monday, the sole remaining target for Louis van Gaals first season in charge is to finish at least fourth in the Premier League to seal a return to the Champions League.A record of just two league defeats since the start of November had given them every chance, but the unconvincing nature of some of their performances had still raised doubts that they would stay the course.A run of games against Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea within their next five fixtures was supposed to be the acid test. And van Gaals side could not have made a better start by overwhelming a Tottenham side with top-four aspirations of their own thank to an impressive run which had lifted them to within three points of United before kick-off.Spurs had also won on their two previous visits to Old Trafford but any chance of a hat-trick disappeared with first-half goals from Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Rooney, who had woken to unwanted headlines after footage emerged of him supposedly being knocked out during a sparring session with a former United team-mate.United were superior in every department as they produced one of their best performances under van Gaal and, thanks to a ninth win in 10 home league games, they are now just two points behind second placed Manchester City.United again started with the out of form Radamel Falcao on the bench. With Robin van Persie also still out injured, Fellaini has played an increasingly important role as an attacking option and it was the Belgium international who put United ahead after nine minutes with his fifth goal of the season.Carricks return to starting duty for the first time since late January was also a contributory factor to Uniteds first-half dominance and it was a pass from the former Tottenham midfielder that released Fellaini to score with a low left-footed shot across Hugo Lloris.Carrick had not scored since February 2014 and managed only one all of last season. But his 19th minute finish was that of a proven marksman as he deftly guided a header beyond Lloris after Nacer Chadli had struggled to clear a header from Fellaini following an Ashley Young corner.Tottenham looked anything but the side that had won five of their previous seven league games and watching England coach Roy Hodgson barely saw Harry Kane, aiming to score for a seventh successive away game, get a meaningful touch as he seeks to win a place in the full England squad to be named this coming week.Rooney will definitely be in that squad and he underlined his well-being with his 19th goal of the season 11 minutes before the break to make victory a formality.Taking possession off Nabil Bentaleb, the United captain ran unchecked through Tottenhams defence before slotting the ball home and celebrating with a flurry of punches and a collapse to the floor to mimic the morning newspaper report which claimed he had been knocked out in an impromptu boxing bout in his kitchen with Stoke defender Phil Bardsley.Spurs couldnt be as bad in the second half and Ryan Mason missed a chance to pull a goal back when he shot wide 10 minutes into the second half and Kane was denied by David de Gea at the death.United also didnt need to sustain the tempo and intensity that marked this out as one of their best performances at Old Trafford since the Alex Ferguson era.

Football: Everton down Newcastle to ease relegation fears

Posted:

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Everton ended a five-match winless run and eased their relegation worries with a 3-0 rout of 10-man Newcastle at Goodison Park on Sunday.Roberto Martinezs team had slumped to within three points of the Premier Leagues bottom three after their recent struggles. But goals from James McCarthy, Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley gave the Merseyside club a first home league win of 2015 to lift them six points clear of the drop zone.A dismal day for Newcastle was summed up when captain Fabricio Coloccini was sent off with his side already two goals down in the second half.Despite good results in the Europa League, including a 2-1 win against Dynamo Kiev on Thursday, confidence has been fragile at Goodison, where a demanding crowd have been quick to get on the teams back in recent weeks. But Belgium striker Lukaku showed against Kiev how his power on the ball can pay dividends and his ability to hold up play was crucial in the opening goal in the 20th minute.Phil Jagielka drilled a 50-yard pass straight through a vacant Newcastle midfield all the way to Lukaku, playing right up against Coloccini, and he held it up just long enough for McCarthy to charge on to.The Republic of Ireland midfielder still had some work to do but was assisted greatly by Tim Krul who, despite having full view of the shot, embarrassingly dived the wrong way and watched as the ball went in past his outstretched feet.It was the injury-troubled midfielders first Everton goal at Goodison and only the second of his Toffees career.Evertons on-loan Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon started to find more space to run into after the break but he was actually heading away from goal when Yoan Gouffran fouled him inside the area to concede a 56th minute penalty.Lukaku stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick for his fifth goal in six league appearances against Newcastle. If that needless foul was not bad enough Coloccinis lunge on Lennon, which earned a straight red card, compounded their miserable afternoon.Barkley put the seal on a morale-boosting win for Everton in stoppage-time when he rounded Krul to score with the last kick of the game.

Football: Bale gets Madrid back to winning ways

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Gareth Bale ended a nine-game goal drought by scoring twice as Real Madrid moved back to within a point of Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a 2-0 win over Levante on SundayThe Welshman silenced his critics as Madrid snapped a three-game winless streak to ensure they go into next weekends El Clasico at the Camp Nou on Barcelonas tails. However, Cristiano Ronaldo didnt appear overjoyed to see his teammate get back on the scoresheet as he cut a frustrated figure having seen his initial efforts lead to both Bales goals.Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti responded to Tuesdays stunning 4-3 defeat at home to Schalke in the Champions League by recalling Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos to the starting line-up for the first time after long-term spells on the sidelines, whilst Keylor Navas was given a run out in goal ahead of the under fire Iker Casillas. However, it was at the other end of the field where Los Blancos looked back to their best as Bale fired an acrobatic volley over before all of the front three were involved in a move that ended with Ronaldo striking the post.Modric was also providing a creative spark that had been missing in recent weeks and he started the move for the opener. The Croatian fed Benzema and when Ronaldos overhead kick from his cross was cleared off the line by Ivan Ramis, Bale was on hand to sweep home the rebound with his weaker right foot.Tono Garcia then denied Ronaldo a certain tap in from a low Bale cross with a last-ditch challenge, whilst Simao turned another centre from Bale onto his own bar as the one-way traffic continued. And the hosts did finally double their advantage five minutes before the break when a fierce driven effort by Ronaldo was turned in from close range by Bale.Perhaps understandably Madrids intensity dipped after the break, but there was one moment of stunning quality as Benzema flicked Ronaldos cross with the outside off his boot off the bar.Earlier, Sevilla moved to within four points of Atletico Madrid in fourth with a routine 3-0 win over Elche thanks to two goals from Carlos Bacca and a late strike by Kevin Gameiro.Villarreal remain in sixth after playing out a 0-0 draw at struggling Almeria, whilst Cordoba are still rooted to the bottom of the table as they lost 2-0 at Malaga.

Bordeaux beat PSG 3-2 in French league

Posted:

PARIS (AP) - Lyon failed to take full advantage of Paris Saint-Germains slip-up in the race for the French title by drawing 0-0 at third-place Marseille on Sunday. After PSG slumped to a third league defeat this season at Bordeaux in the afternoon, the game between the two best attacking teams in France produced a lively encounter but no goals as Lyon missed the chance to open up a four-point gap at the top of the standings. With nine rounds left to play, Hubert Fourniers Lyon side sits two points above the defending champions, with Marseille two points further back.In Bordeaux, Diego Rolan scored the winner with two minutes remaining in a 3-2 victory that ended PSGs 15-game unbeaten run in all competitions.Rolan scored from Brazilian defender Marianos cross with a shot between the legs of goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu. The strike came just four minutes after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had equalized from the penalty spot. After ousting Chelsea from the Champions League after extra time in midweek, PSG players looked spent.Chasing an unprecedented quadruple, PSG which lost stalwart defender David Luiz and midfielder Yohan Cabaye through injury is facing a hectic schedule in the coming weeks and still has to travel to play archrival Marseille this season. We came back late on Wednesday, we were tired both physically and mentally, PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot said. This is not an excuse, but its difficult, even though we are professionals.Ibrahimovic scored twice at Chaban-Delmas stadium, having already put the teams level in the 50th minute from Javier Pastores through ball after Lamine Sane jumped higher than Thiago Silva to open the scoring with a fine header to Sirigus right.Midfielder Wahbi Khazri then restored Bordeauxs lead from close range, pouncing on Kiese Thelins glancing header after fluffing his first attempt on goal. After the match, Ibrahimovic was caught on camera criticizing referee Lionel Jaffredo and using an expletive to describe France. He later apologized, but could be suspended by the league.A record 63,832 spectators packed the Velodrome in Marseille, where France striker Andre-Pierre Gignac came close to put the hosts in the lead after three minutes. But his powerful left-foot shot was parried away by Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes. The visitors responded immediately, with Jordan Ferri setting up Alexandre Lacazette on the left flank only for the leagues top striker to lose his duel with Steve Mandanda.Gignac struck the post in the 71st minute and Lopes was decisive again seven minutes from time when he saved Rod Fannis header on his line.Tempers frayed toward the end, with Marseille defender Jeremy Morel being sent off in the 85th minute for a dangerous tackle on Maxime Gonalons.Mandanda then spared Marseilles blushes with a spectacular dive in the last minute to turn a shot from Corentin Tolisso away for a corner.Earlier, Belgium striker Divock Origi ended a six-month scoring drought with a hat trick as Lille defeated Rennes 3-0.Origis goals secured a third consecutive win for Lille, which climbed to eighth in the standings, three points clear of the Brittany side.Despite a bright opening spell, Rennes failed to convert its early chances and was then overrun by the hosts. Origi put Lille in front in the 38th minute from close range after making the most of a poor clearance from defender Fallou Diagne. He doubled his tally from the spot in the 63rd, and then latched on to Nolan Rouxs cross at the back post 10 minutes later to complete his hat trick.Rennes should have equalized in the 49th when Ola Toivonen netted a clever lob that was incorrectly disallowed for offside.

Tennis: Andy Murray likes Mayweather in a long fight

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - British tennis star and avid boxing fan Andy Murray has weighed in with his prediction for the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather mega fight on May 2.Murray says American Mayweather has two things in his favour, including the Las Vegas home-crowd advantage. The other is Mayweathers ability to use his superb defence to build up points if it goes the distance.Thats his hometown, Murray said of the gambling mecca in the Nevada desert. Hes spoken a little bit about how much he means to the economy of the city.If it goes to the scorecards, I would think it would be tough for Pacquiao to win.Murray spent some time in the Philippines last year where he was able to meet Pacquiao. Having talked to Pacquiao in person he now understands why Pacman is so immensely popular in his native country.Hes a huge, huge star. You know, the whole country pretty much stops when he fights, said Murray, who is in Palm Springs to compete in this weeks ATP and WTA Tour Indian Wells tennis tournament.I obviously didnt get to know him well. I only spent five or ten minutes with him. It was a nice experience for me.Murray, who is seeded fourth overall, defeated Canadas Vasek Pospisil 6-1, 6-3 in his opening match on Saturday. He is coming off a difficult 2014 season after finishing 2013 in historic fashion by becoming the first Brit in 77 years to win Wimbledon. He spent much of 2014 recovering from back surgery. Murray started to get back into form at the end of 2014 and looks ready to challenge in Indian Wells where his best result was reaching the finals in 2009.

Boxing: Pacquiao undergoes random blood, urine testing

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Manny Pacquiao was given a random drug test Saturday, only two days after the US Anti-Doping Agency revealed the Filipino boxing icon and future foe Floyd Mayweather agreed to Olympic-style testing.A report on GMA News in Pacquiaos homeland detailed that he had given blood and urine samples to a medical technician that made an unannounced visit to Pacquiaos training area in Los Angeles.Pacquiao agreed to the extra doping protocol as part of the contract signed to fight unbeaten US rival Floyd Mayweather on May 2 in Las Vegas in a long-awaited bout that figures to shatter boxing revenue records. Both Mayweather and Pacquiao must make themselves available for random blood and urine tests and provide US anti-doping officials with travel itineraries. They will also be tested after the fight.Samples will be examined for human growth hormone (HGH), erythropoietin (EPO) and other substances.Drug testing was an issue in 2010 when talks for a Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown failed. Mayweather accused Pacquiao of using performance-enhancing drugs. Pacquiao denied the claim and sued Mayweather, a dispute the two settled out of court.

West Indies turn their attention to World Cup quarter-finals

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AP) - After a turbulent passage through pool play and an anxious wait for qualification to be confirmed, two-time champions the West Indies can now relax and turn their attention to a Cricket World Cup quarter-final against New Zealand. The West Indies campaign began with a shock loss to Ireland, picked up with wins over Pakistan and Zimbabwe, dipped with a heavy loss to South Africa, contained a low-scoring loss to India and then came to a head in a must-win match against the United Arab Emirates. They won by six wickets, but their tournament of emotional highs and lows continued. They had to await the outcome of the match between Pakistan and Ireland before being sure of a place in the last eight. Were obviously looking forward to (playing New Zealand), said captain Jason Holder, who took 4-27 in the victory over the UAE. Obviously, New Zealand has been playing decent cricket they havent lost a game. So hopefully this quarterfinal, well beat them.New Zealand is playing with confidence but Holder believes his team can unsettle the home side in Wellington.I think once we take our chances in terms of getting wickets with the new ball, as weve been doing in this tournament, I think we can put some pressure on them, Holder said.I think theyve done reasonably well up top with guys like (Martin) Guptill, (Brendon) McCullum and also Kane Williamson. But I think if we get into the middle order as quickly as possible it will be better off for us.A question mark hovers over the West Indies batting lineup as Chris Gayle missed Sundays match with a back problem and his fitness is still unclear.Johnson Charles, who replaced him and made 55, is likely to hold his place which means another batsman, possibly Dwayne Smith, will have to make way for Gayles return.Chris had the same back problem as (hes had) over the last year and he has good days and he has bad days, Holder said. Obviously, hes a key player for us and his fitness is key going into the quarterfinal and Im sure hell be up for it.Even if hes not a 100 percent hell push through it. Its an important game and hes a big player and you know what big players can do on big days.Charles was called up to the squad as a replacement. As such, he has seen the campaign as an outsider, and as an insider. And he believes the West Indies can win the tournament.Originally, I wasnt part of this World Cup squad, but one thing I always used to say back home is that we always have the ability to take the trophy, he said. And as I came to join the squad, it was something that was in the back of my mind.I believe that the team has a lot of self-belief and I have no doubt that we could take the World Cup.

Porterfield condemns World Cup's blurred vision

Posted:

ADELAIDE (AFP) - Ireland captain William Porterfield on Sunday questioned the International Cricket Councils vision for the sport after the non-Test nation faced the axe from the World Cup.Ireland lost to Pakistan by seven wickets at the Adelaide Oval in a match that lifted the winners into the quarter-final and sent the loser home. With the ICC planning to reduce the next World Cup in England in 2019 from 14 teams to 10, Porterfield hoped it was not the end of the Irish dream in the sport.Id love to think it was not our last World Cup game, the skipper said.Obviously it will be interesting to see what their (the ICCs) vision for the game is.We need to know that and everyone wants to know that because if their vision is to grow the game, then cutting teams in world competitions will not be the right thing.I think the next World Cup is two or three days longer than this World Cup, so when youve got four fewer teams and your competition drags out longer, thats not an excuse.Porterfield did not expect an immediate response from the ICC on the matter.Im sure theyre hoping everything blows over the next few weeks and they dont hear much from us, he said. Then it will be easy to brush it under the carpet. But I think something has to be done if they want to grow the game.Porterfield insisted Ireland needed to continue playing at the top level despite their first round exit -- mainly due to an inferior run-rate to the West Indies.Weve missed out on the quarter-finals only on run rate, he said. I think weve shown what we can do. Weve done plenty enough. The other non-Test nations have also put on some great performances and theyve played even less cricket than we have.Porterfield hoped the ICC will not ignore pleas from crickets greats like Sachin Tendulkar to expand the World Cup, rather than shrink it.If you cut us out of the World Cup then whats the point really for us to keep going, he said.A lot of people have spoken out that it is the wrong move, a lot of influential people have said that. So I dont think the ICC can just ignore that.

Yahoo eyes 'end-to-end' email encryption by end of year

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Yahoo said Sunday it plans to introduce end to end encryption for email this year to boost privacy protection for users concerned about snooping from governments or hackers. The Internet giant demonstrated new security and safety features for its email service at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, ramping up efforts to boost privacy since the 2013 revelations about government surveillance. The new security feature aims to allow non-technical people to use encryption with the click of a button after an initial setup of a few minutes.A test or beta version of the encryption software is being released for developers, and it is expected to be rolled out to users in the coming months. Our goal is to have this available by the end of the year, Alex Stamos, Yahoos chief information security officer, told AFP.Anybody who has the ability to write an email should have no problem using our email encryption.Privacy advocates say encryption is a valuable tool in thwarting unwanted snooping, but many users find the process daunting, with a need to create complex codes or keys for both the sender and receiver.Yahoo has been collaborating with Google and its Gmail service on the encryption, and the standards will be compatible, Stamos said, so Yahoo and Gmail users will be able to send each other encrypted messages with a single click.I think anybody who uses email in the center of our life needs encryption, Stamos said.If you send emails to your spouse or your lawyer or family members, you want to have these messages be confidential.Yahoo and Google and other online giants took steps to encrypt Internet traffic in the wake of revelations of vast online surveillance programs led by the US National Security Agency, and have argued they never allowed unfettered access to their servers. The email encryption takes this further by encrypting the content on both ends of the message.- Dumping the password -========================Yahoo said another feature soon to be introduced would allow users to bypass the standard password, by getting a one-time code sent to a verified phone each time they log in.The move would help avoid so-called phishing attacks and other maneuvers that steal a users password, leading to potential identity theft. The two new measures are expected to improve security and privacy while still being easy to use, Stamos said. Its important for our products to be safe as used by normal people, said Stamos. Our users face a very diverse set of threats. The biggest threat is probably someone stealing their password, and their account taken over.He added that encryption and password circumvention may also be important for users living in countries with repressive regimes. There are a lot of Yahoo users who live in countries where their freedom of expression and freedom of association is not respected, and where the government is trying to put malware on their computers to track them, he said.
