Obama-Castro meeting caps dramatic detente

Posted:

PANAMA CITY (AFP) - From their handshake at a memorial service for Nelson Mandela to their historic meeting in Panama, Barack Obama and Raul Castro have gradually set aside decades of US-Cuban hostility to achieve a rapprochement long thought impossible. The handshake in South Africa in December 2013, captured by cameras on the sidelines of Mandelas memorial, gave the first glimpse of a potential thaw between the old Cold War foes.Obama had floated the idea several weeks earlier, when he said at a fundraiser in Miami that the United States needed to rethink its Cuba policy -- a politically risky move in the anti-Castro bastion. What the world did not know was that behind the scenes, talks had already begun -- in June 2013 -- on restoring diplomatic ties severed in 1961, two years after the Cuban Revolution. The negotiations were a tightly guarded secret right up to December 17 last year, when the two presidents announced their countries would normalize relations.Several factors helped clear the way for the dramatic detente: Castros economic reforms and less hostile rhetoric since taking over from his big brother Fidel in 2006, and shifting US attitudes toward the communist island.Mediation by Pope Francis also played a key role when the secret talks were stalled in the spring of 2014.According to the head of the Catholic Church in Cuba, Cardinal Jaime Ortega, the pope helped nudge the negotiations through difficult territory when he and Obama met at the Vatican in March last year. The pope spoke about the US embargo with Obama, who acknowledged that it was an obsolete measure taken before he was even born, Ortega, who also played a central part in the process, told an Argentine Catholic newspaper. There are obstacles. Those prisoners, Obama told him, referring to the inmates whose release would later pave the way for the historic announcement: three Cuban intelligence agents jailed in the United States, as well as US contractor Alan Gross and a CIA operative jailed in Cuba.According to Ortegas account, when Obama said he could not free the three Cubans, the pope pressed him to think of the big picture.Look, its not just for the good of the Cuban people, who have suffered greatly. Its also for your government and you personally, for your countrys policy toward Latin America, which is united in its rejection of this embargo, said the pope.Ortega said the comment gave Obama pause and ultimately helped unblock the discussions.Difficult, winding roadAfter that meeting, the pope wrote letters to both Obama and Castro inviting them to resolve humanitarian questions of common interest, including the situation of certain prisoners. That unprecedented move by the pontiff reinforced the impetus and the momentum to move forward, said a senior US official. In October, US and Cuban delegations met at the Vatican to finalize the terms of the deal, including the prisoner swap.At the time, there were rumors of a prisoner exchange in diplomatic circles, but no one suspected the magnitude of the announcement setting aside more than half a century of bad blood.High-level delegations from the two countries have since held three meetings on reopening embassies, restoring diplomatic ties and other issues still dividing the long-time foes. The stumbling blocks include the US embargo, which will be trickier to resolve than the prisoner issue, since Obama would need the blessing of the Republican-controlled Congress to lift it.The two presidents are both deeply involved in the process, said Cuban ex-diplomat and university professor Carlos Alzugaray, even if it will be a difficult, winding road and may be short on time because everything could change when the next US president takes office in January 2017.

Golf: Spieth stumbles but stays ahead at Masters

Posted:

AUGUSTA (AFP) - Jordan Spieth was holding at bay a gallery of golfing giants at the Masters on Sunday as the talented 21-year-old targeted his first major title.Leading by a record-equaling five shots at the halfway stage of the years first major, Spieth had already felt the heat from the likes of Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods even before he teed off. Then Phil Mickelson entered the fray with a triple-birdie blast early on that hauled the three-time former winner into firm contention. But they all needed Spieth to falter and, despite a scare or two early on, he held firm.A slippery five-footer brought a birdie at the second, but he misread his short putt at the fourth to record just his second bogey of the tournament -- against 16 birdies.A superb 22-footer for birdie at the par-three sixth was then followed by a poor bunker shot at the next that handed him a second bogey.Hardly the kind of play that stunned the galleries and his rivals in his superb opening rounds, but at that stage he was still where he was when he started the day -- five shots ahead of the field.Spieth was aiming to convert two days of inspired golf into a first major title at the tender age of 21.The Texan has set Augusta National alight with two rounds of 64 and 66 that saw him record 15 birdies against just one bogey. In so doing, he became the youngest player to lead the Masters after the first round, and his 130 halfway total is the lowest-ever in 79 editions of the years first major. He was firmly in a winning position, but remained aware that he still had much to do, as he learned last year when he led the Masters after 54 holes, but ended up tied for second behind Bubba Watson.Spieths playing partner, Charley Hoffman, doggedly stayed at nine under with a run of pars before finally sinking a long putt at the eighth for a birdie.Mickelson joined him there, four shots off the lead, when he hit his approach shot to two feet at the ninth to go out in 32.That cut the gap on Spieth to four as he approached the turn, but the Texan again responded with a birdie at the ninth to stay five ahead at 15 under.Dustin Johnson, who grabbed an unprecedented three eagles on Friday, was at eight under and then it was McIlroy and Woods, both of whom were picking their way up the leaderboard after front nines of 32.The two biggest names in golf were both facing a mountain to climb with 12 strokes separating them from Spieth at the start of the day.To date, eight strokes has been the biggest halfway deficit anyone has overcome to win the Masters -- a feat achieved by Jack Burke in 1956.McIlroy had already seen his hopes of becoming just the sixth player to win all four Grand Slam titles all but blown out of the water due to two, for him, mediocre rounds of 71.The 25-year-old Northern Irishman eagled the second and got it to eight under after 15 holes, but dropped shots at 16 and 18 for a 68 that left him well off the lead at six under par.Woods was upbeat after his 69 on Friday, which saw him play his best golf of what has so far been a wretched year.Few believed though he could get himself into contention to win a 15th major and fifth Masters, but even a top-15 finish would give him a platform upon which he could continue to rebuild his flagging career.Once again the conditions were there for good scoring with overnight rain having again softened the usually deadly-fast, undulating greens of Augusta National.Englands Ian Poulter, who set the early clubhouse lead at four under after a 67, agreed that there were good scores to be had on the course.I think there was a few more accessible pin locations today after the overnight rain, he said. Definitely softened the course.I think youll see some of the guys having a chase around that front nine and obviously we know what can happen on the back nine. The holes like 15 are obviously key chances there.

Football: PSG punish Bastia to retain League Cup

PARIS (AFP) - Holders Paris Saint-Germain lifted the first silverware of the French season with a comprehensive 4-0 win over 10-men Bastia in the League Cup final on Saturday. In a repeat of the 1995 final, a first half brace by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, completed by Edinson Cavanis second half double, kept Ligue 1 leaders PSG in the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple.Laurent Blancs side face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter final first leg on Wednesday and tackle Auxerre next month in the French Cup final. It took Blancs men just 21 minutes to find the back of the net after Bastia defender Sebastien Squillaci was harshly sent off for taking Ezequiel Lavezzi down inside the box, with Ibrahimovic converting from the spot. The Swedish forward scored his tenth goal in just five games a few minutes before half-time, controlling Mathieu Peybernes poor headed clearance before lashing a shot inside the bottom corner.Cavani added a third with a superb header, finding himself at the end of Serge Auriers cross. The Uruguay striker grabbed his 20th goal of the season and put the final nail in the Corsican sides coffin in injury time thanks to a brilliantly-timed pass by Ibrahimovic that sent him through on goal.Against a team currently sitting in 14th, five points above the relegation zone, PSG secured their fifth win in the competition after lifting the trophy in 1995, 1998, 2008 and 2014.With no time for celebrations, PSG will now turn to Barcelona, whom they host at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. They can then focus on national competition as they top Ligue 1 with seven matches to play and face Auxerre in the final of the French Cup on May 30.

Football: Unpaid, bankrupt Parma stun high-flying Juve

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - Jose Mauri struck on the hour mark as crisis-hit Parma stunned Juventus 1-0 to hand the champions only their second defeat of the Serie A season, while Cagliaris relegation woes deepened with a 2-0 defeat at Genoa.Days before hosting Monaco in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri rested a number of regulars for the trip to a packed out Enrico Tardini stadium.Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, striker Carlos Tevez and defender Andrea Barzagli were all left on the bench ahead of Tuesdays last eight clash in Turin, although it was a decision Allegri could go on to regret. As well as not being paid all season and entering administration last month after being declared bankrupt, Parma had also only taken two points from their last seven league outings against the Turin giants. But Roberto Donadonis men were impervious to their recent setbacks, and historical statistics, as they set about defying the defending champions in a bid to show their relegation fight is far from over.Juventus spurned several half chances in a balanced opening half and had little response in the second after Ishak Belfodil cut back from the byeline for Mauri to fire past a flailing Marco Storari and into the top of the net.Juves only other defeat was away to Genoa at the start of the season. Although their second reverse is unlikely to stop their charge towards a fourth consecutive scudetto, it could give faint hope to Roma, who sit second at 14 points before their trip to Torino on Sunday.Former AC Milan midfielder Donadoni has endured an emotional rollercoaster as coach of stricken Parma this season. And although the Duchy Men face a huge battle to beat the drop -- Parma are 10 points from safety at the bottom of the table -- no one could deny the 51-year-old coach a deserved victory punch at full-time.The lads showed great pride tonight, Donadoni told Mediaset. We might be last in the table but after everything thats happened the squad has shown that they can rise above it.Allegri admitted to Jtv that Juve had made too many errors in the second half and added: We need points to secure this championship and its not been won yet. But were calm and now our focus is on Monaco.Asked about Tuesdays fixture, Allegri added: Its a quarter-final that will be decided over 180 minutes like all the other last eight ties. No anxiety or euphoria. Everyone says were favourites but football games are decided on the pitch. At Genoa, MBaye Niang continued his revival following his January loan move from AC Milan by breaking the deadlock minutes at the Luigi Ferraris stadium, with Iago Falque sealing the points with Genoas second goal minutes later.Niang had headed just over post and bar early on, while Paul-Jose MPoku came close to a stunning opener for the visitors when he curled a drive over keeper Eugenio Lamanna only to see his effort come off the bar.Niang broke the deadlock minutes after the restart, doing well to lose his marker in the box before tapping Sebastian Roncaglios delivery past Lamanna to claim his fourth goal for his new side.Elsewhere, Inter Milan returned to winning ways in style, building on Mauro Icardis fortuitous opener on 11 minutes to beat hosts Verona 3-0 thanks to a Rodrigo Palacio strike on 48 minutes and an own goal from Vangelis Moras in added-on time after Inter keeper Samir Handanovic saved a Luca Toni spot kick.Inter had been winless since the end of February and their first win in six league games has given faint hope to their push for a place in the Europa League next season.Roberto Mancinis men remain in 10th place, six points behind fifth-placed Sampdoria ahead of their trip to AC Milan on Sunday.
