Euro surges vs dollar on encouraging economic data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro surged higher against the dollar Thursday after some encouraging economic data in the eurozone, including a welcome rise in prices and stronger-than-expected growth in Spain. After four months in negative territory, eurozone inflation rose to zero in April as the European Central Bank conducts a massive bond-purchase program to stimulate the tepid economy. Spains economic growth accelerated in the first quarter to the fastest pace since 2007.News that eurozone inflation climbed out of the red added to the euros better bias, said Joe Manimbo at Western Union Business Solutions. The euro climbed to $1.1224 around 2100 GMT from $1.1128 late Wednesday. The single currency rose for the sixth consecutive trading day to its strongest level since February, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management said in a research note. The one thing that is NOT supporting the uptrend in the EUR/USD is fundamentals. The dollar gained against the yen and the pound as US economic data came in better than anticipated. US jobless claims fell to a 15-year low and consumer spending in March rose 0.4 percent, double the gain in February.

NASA spacecraft crashes on Mercury after 11-year mission

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - An unmanned NASA spacecraft has crashed on the surface of the planet Mercury, after it ran out of fuel following a successful 11-year mission, the US space agency said Thursday. The MESSENGER probe -- short for MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging -- was the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury, and issued a final farewell on Twitter shortly before its demise at 3:26 pm (1926 GMT).Well, I guess its time to say goodbye to all my friends, family, support team. I will be making my final impact very soon.Shortly after, the official @MESSENGER2011 Twitter account posted another image of Mercurys surface, with the caption: MESSENGERs LAST ACT? THATS SMASHINGThe image was not of Mercurys fall. NASA has said previously that there could be no real-time pictures of the impact, which would take place on the side of the planet facing away from the Earth. But the US space agency confirmed that the probe had indeed crash-landed. A NASA planetary exploration mission came to a planned, but nonetheless dramatic, end Thursday when it slammed into Mercurys surface at about 8,750 miles per hour (3.91 kilometers per second) and created a new crater on the planets surface, the agency said in a statement. The spacecraft itself was just about three meters long. The crater it would cause was expected to be 16 meters (52 feet) in diameter, NASA said. The mission, which launched in 2004, had achieved unprecedented success, with its top discovery being that Mercury had lots of frozen water and other volatile materials in its permanently shadowed polar craters on the planet closest to the Sun, the US space agency said.Going out with a bang as it impacts the surface of Mercury, we are celebrating MESSENGER as more than a successful mission, said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASAs Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The MESSENGER mission will continue to provide scientists with a bonanza of new results as we begin the next phase of this mission -- analyzing the exciting data already in the archives, and unravelling the mysteries of Mercury.

Zimbabwe to play all matches in Lahore

ISLAMABAD (AP) - Zimbabwe will become the first full ICC member nation to tour Pakistan in six years when it plays two Twenty20 internationals and three ODIs in Lahore from May 19-June 1.This would be an auspicious moment for Pakistan cricket and I am positive that it would open doors of international cricket in Pakistan, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan said in a statement on Thursday.I am grateful to my counterpart in Cricket Zimbabwe, Wilson Manase, for acceding to our request of sending a full side on a tour to Pakistan. The first Twenty20 international will be the opening match on May 22.The PCB has hosted Kenya and Afghanistan over the last couple of years, but no test playing country has toured Pakistan because of security concerns since gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka cricket teams bus in Lahore in 2009. Six police officials and a van driver were killed during the attack while some Sri Lankan players were also injured.I am indeed confident that Zimbabwes incident-free tour shall be the harbinger of more and more associate and full member nations visiting us in the months and years to come, Khan said.Crickets governing body, the ICC, has been informed of the tour but is yet to confirm whether it will send officials for the five international matches at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.Zimbabwe will send a team on Monday to review security arrangements before its national team arrives in Lahore on May 19.Initially Pakistan had planned a couple of matches in Karachi but the PCB said Zimbabwe players expressed concerns over extensive travelling and the series will now only be played in Lahore.

Stokes a doubt for England, while Windies expect pacers back

BRIDGETOWN (AP) - A sore back has put England all-rounder Ben Stokes in doubt while the West Indies is confident two of its fast bowlers have recovered from injuries to be fit for the third and final cricket test starting at Kensington Oval on Friday.Stokes is a hard-hitting, left-handed batsman and a bowler capable of right-arm pace at up to 90 mph (145 kph). If he is ruled out, the choice for his replacement appears to be between two other fast men in the squad, Liam Plunkett and Mark Wood.Jerome Taylor was eliminated by a strained right shoulder from the West Indies in last weeks second test in Grenada, won by England by nine wickets. Jason Holder, the towering allrounder, had to be taken off on a stretcher on the final day after he strained his left ankle while bowling and crashed onto the pitch.West Indies coach Phil Simmons said a decision on their selection would be taken on the morning of the match. But he and captain Denesh Ramdin expected both to be in the final 11.Taylor has the experience of 38 tests and 108 wickets. He was the West Indies leading bowler with five wickets in the drawn first test in Antigua. Holders seam bowling is augmented by his improved batting, evident in his match-saving unbeaten 103 in the first test. The West Indies has called up left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul as cover for legspinner Devendra Bishoo, who cut a finger on his bowling hand sending down 59 overs in the second test.Ramdin said they have reviewed their shortcomings in Grenada, when was shaping to be a second successive was ruined by James Anderson on the fifth morning. Its going to be a good pitch, a bit more bounce than the last pitches, Ramdin said. When we play in Barbados, theres always a bit of bounce, and we need to come hard at the English. We are one down, so we need to play a little more aggressive and positive cricket. Two of the most reliable batsmen on either side have gone through a slump.Left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the 40-year-old veteran of 163 tests since 1994, has scored only one half-century, 50 against South Africa in Cape Town last December, in his last nine test innings, in which he averages 17.55 against a career 51.71. His 11,842 runs are just 70 short of Brian Laras record as the West Indies top-scorer in test cricket, but hes crawling to the mark.Jonathan Trott, 33, has returned to the England team for the first time since withdrawing from the series in Australia after the first test in November 2013. His scores in the first two tests were 0, 4, 59 and 0.Both coaches have backed them for the final test.Sell-out crowds are expected at the 12,000-seat stadium over the first three days. They include an estimated 4,000 travelling England supporters.

Windies call-up Permaul to cover injury-hit Bishoo

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul was Thursday added to the West Indies squad for the third and final Test against England which gets underway at the Kensington Oval on Friday.Permaul was summoned to make up a 15-man squad after leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo suffered a cut to his ring finger in the right hand.Permaul, 25, made his debut in 2012 and has played four Test matches so far. He has 12 wickets at an average of 37 runs per wicket. He was the leading wicket-taker in the West Indies four-day tournament this year with 67 wickets at 14 runs each.Bishoo did well for us in the second Test in Grenada but he has a finger injury so we decided to call-up Permaul, said coach Phil Simmons. He was among the best bowlers in the four-day cricket earlier this season, and he also bowled well in the camp ahead of this series -- so hes in good shape.England lead the three-game series after a nine-wicket win in Grenada followed a draw in the first Test in Antigua.

Tennis: Nadal refuses to panic despite slump

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Rafael Nadal insisted Thursday that he will not panic over his worrying slump in form which has placed serious question marks over his dream of a 10th French Open title. The 28-year-old Spaniard is down at four in the world rankings and has maximum points to defend at next weeks Madrid Masters where he is the double defending champion.Nadal has just one title to his name this season -- on clay in Buenos Aires -- while his only victory over a top-10 player came against compatriot David Ferrer in Monte Carlo, where he went on to a tame semi-final loss to in-form Novak Djokovic. But the 14-time major winner believes the clay courts of Madrid, where he was also champion in 2010, give him the perfect opportunity to jumpstart his bid for a 10th triumph at the French Open in June.I have the confidence that I am doing things well. When you do all you can, you cant ask for any more, Nadal was quoted by El Pais on Thursday.I need to have a balanced point of view that is not too negative or positive. If I maintain the same desire and work rate, I hope to once again have the same chance to compete for everything like I have in the past.Nadals most recent outing ended in a dispiriting third-round exit to Italys Fabio Fognini on clay in Barcelona, a venue where he had been champion eight times. However, he believes Madrid can represent a turning point as he attempts to re-establish himself as a major force in the sport after an injury and illness-hit conclusion to 2014 which saw him miss three months of the season.Madrid has always brought me positive energy. Both the fans and the city have given me everything I could dream of. I know things have gone worse that I would have liked up until now, but that doesnt negate my excitement to be here, he added.I can only keep going. After so many ups and downs I am sure that the consistency I want to have will arrive. If you have the desire, and I have, you can turn the situation around.

Oil prices rise further as dollar drops

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rose again Thursday on data suggesting the US crude glut is easing as the dollar weakened against the euro.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for June delivery rose $1.05 to $59.63 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.European benchmark Brent oil for June delivery gained 94 cents to $66.78 a barrel in London.Analysts said the oil market continued to react to Wednesdays US Department of Energy inventory report, which showed a 500,000 barrel drop in petroleum stocks to 61.7 million barrels at the key Cushing, Oklahoma trading hub. While the decline was modest, it marked the first drop since late November. Traders are taking the decline as a sign producers are cutting back at key US petroleum sites, such as the Bakken region in North Dakota, analysts said. The oil price wants to rise - this is the impression one is bound to gain if one looks at the events that have taken place on the oil market in recent weeks, Commerzbank said. Certainly market participants are paying more attention and responding more to the positive rather than to the negative reports.Oil prices were given an additional upward push by the retreat in the dollar against the euro and some other currencies following Wednesdays US economic report showing growth of just 0.2 percent in the first quarter. A Fed statement Wednesday left open the timing of an increase as it waits for more signs of economic progress.A weak dollar encourages consumption of crude and other dollar-denominated commodities outside the US.
