Football: Januzaj tames Villa on Man United return

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Adnan Januzaj marked his Manchester United return with a goal as Louis van Gaals side beat Aston Villa 1-0 on Friday to claim a second consecutive Premier League victory.Making his first start since February, Januzaj converted a glorious pass from Juan Mata on the half-hour as United extended an unbeaten record in league games at Villa Park that now stands at 20 years.Following a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, this victory, in a game brought forward due to a far-right march in the area on Saturday, means United, now top of the table, have started a season with back-to-back wins for the first time since 2011.I think we have played better than last week, certainly in the first 25 minutes, said United manager Van Gaal. But after we scored the goal, we were running out of the game. We had a lot of unnecessary ball losses.Im very pleased, because you cant get more points than six.It took United until November 22 to record their first away win last season and with Van Gaal having pinpointed his sides away form as an area in need of improvement, he will hope that this win augurs well for the campaign ahead.Villa gave home debuts to no fewer than six players, while new signing Adama Traore watched from the stands after completing his move from Barcelona, but despite strong starts to each half, last seasons beaten FA Cup finalists struggled to create chances.I didnt think there was too much in the game, to be perfectly honest, said Villa manager Tim Sherwood.I felt the boys gave everything for the cause, but we didnt carry enough attacking threat.Rudy Gestedes match-winning cameo against Bournemouth last weekend had strengthened his claim to a starting place, but it was with pace, rather than height, that Villa sought to unsettle United centre-backs Chris Smalling and Daley Blind, zipping passes between and behind them for Jordan Ayew and Gabriel Agbonlahor to chase. With Januzaj starting behind Wayne Rooney at number 10, Memphis Depay moved to the left flank for United, and both took time to settle, Depay bundled over by Jordan Veretout and Januzaj flattened by Idrissa Gueye.Villa could not set foot in the United box, though, and the visitors began to fire warning shots, with Brad Guzan forced to race from his goal and thwart Depay after the ball broke into the Dutchmans path.United went ahead in the 29th minute courtesy of Januzaj, who has been linked with a loan move after falling out of favour in Van Gaals first season. After drifting to the left flank from the right, Mata released Januzaj with a brilliant through ball and the Belgian left Micah Richards on the turf with a sharp turn before beating Guzan with the aid of a deflection off Ciaran Clark. It was his first goal since April 2014.Having spent last season on loan at Fiorentina, new Villa captain Richards knows a thing or two about Serie A defending and he was reacquainted with it shortly before half-time.Uniteds Italian right-back Matteo Darmian prevented the former Manchester City man from making telling contact with Ashley Westwoods drilled corner, but referee Mike Dean ignored Villas penalty appeals.Villa Park was not full at kick-off, the legacy of traffic problems on a local motorway, but it was rammed and raucous for the start of the second half as the hosts went in search of an equaliser.Ayew shot over, enterprising left-back Jordan Amavi fizzed a cross across goal and Agbonlahor saw a header saved by Sergio Romero, standing in once again for the unsettled David de Gea.Sherwood pitched Gestede into the fray on the hour and Van Gaal sent on Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ander Herrera moments later.Schweinsteigers introduction gave Uniteds game a much-needed injection of composure and Depay squandered an excellent chance to add a second when he curled wide from Matas incisive pass.

Football: Barca thrashed 4-0 by Aduriz-inspired Athletic

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - European champions Barcelona were stunned by an Aritz Aduriz hat-trick and brilliant opener from Mikel San Jose as Athletic Bilbao took a 4-0 lead into the second-leg of the Spanish Super Cup.Barca had picked up their fourth trophy of the year in Tbilisi on Tuesday with a 5-4 win over Sevilla in extra time in the UEFA Super Cup.But those exertions clearly took their toll as an under-strength side was dominated from the off by the Basques who exacted revenge for defeat in the Copa del Rey final back in May.San Jose fired in a volley from just inside the Barca half to break the deadlock before Aduriz struck three times in 15 second-half minutes to give Ernesto Valverdes side a huge advantage heading into Mondays second-leg.To score four against Barcelona is almost impossible. We are very satisfied with our work but the second leg is still to come and it is going to be very tough, Aduriz told Spanish TV station Telecinco. We cannot think that Barca in their stadium cant score four goals. They are the best and capable of doing anything.Barcas defensive deficiencies had been laid bare in blowing a 4-1 lead against Sevilla that forced them into an energy-sapping extra 30 minutes in the Georgian capital. However, with Gerard Pique among four first-team regulars rested the Catalans were even more of a shambles at the back and this time couldnt be rescued by an off-colour Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. It is the first time in 14 years that the Catalans have conceded four times in two consecutive games. It is going to be difficult, but we have won many matches by many goals and we will try until the last minute, said a defiant Javier Mascherano. It is a one-off situation. They had four or five chances and scored four. Obviously that is not normal, especially given how we finished last season, but dont count us out yet.Now we have to correct what we did wrong, but above all prepare for the return leg.San Jose began an unforgettable night for the hosts in fitting fashion as he pounced on Marc-Andre Ter Stegens headed clearance to fire the ball beyond the German keeper from just beyond the halfway line.Barca slowly began to get back into the game, but they didnt seriously threaten until first-half stoppage time when Pedro Rodriguez was clipped on the edge of the area.Messi scored twice from free-kicks against Sevilla in midweek and couldnt have struck this one much better as Gorka Iraizoz flew to his right to claw the ball away from the top corner with an outstretched hand. The visitors twice came close to an equaliser at the start of the second period as Pedro fired off the underside of the bar before Iraizoz made another brilliant save to deny Messi from Suarezs clever cut-back.However, the game turned back in Athletics favour when Sabin Merino beat Dani Alves for pace and his cross was powerfully headed home by Aduriz.More poor defending from Luis Enriques men was punished nine minutes later as the ball ricocheted around the area before Aduriz smashed home on the turn. And the veteran striker was given the chance to complete his hat-trick when Alves was adjudged to have pulled down Borja Etxeita from a corner and Aduriz confidently sent Ter Stegen the wrong way from the spot.Messi and Suarez tried to lift the visitors in the final quarter, but even they couldnt find a way past a resolute Athletic defence.Barca now have a huge mountain to climb at the Camp Nou on Monday if they are to maintain their push to emulate Pep Guardiolas Barca side which won six trophies in a calendar year six years ago.

Golf: Iwata matches major record with second-round 63

Posted:

KOHLER (AFP) - Japans Hiroshi Iwata matched the lowest score ever shot in a mens major championship on Friday, scorching Whistling Straits for a nine-under par 63 in the second round of the 97th PGA Championship.Iwatas round at Whistling Straits marked the 27th time a man has shot 63 in a major, with two players -- Greg Norman and Vijay Singh -- doing it twice. The most recent prior 63 at a major championship was Jason Dufner en route to the PGA Championship title in 2013 -- the 13th time the score was achieved in the PGA Championship.Iwata had eight birdies and an eagle with one bogey in his 63, which gave him a four-under total of 140 for 36 holes. The 34-year-old from Miyati, ranked 102nd in the world, needed a birdie at Whistling Straits tough 18th hole to notch the first major championship 62.His second shot at the par-4, 520-yard hole -- nicknamed Dyeabolical after course designer Pete Dye -- came up about 20 yards short of the green. His pitch bounced and rolled past the hole, leaving him to putt for par.Iwata, who has never made the cut in three prior major championship starts, is no stranger to stunningly low rounds. He fired a brilliant 10-under par 62 in the second round of the Thailand Open earlier this year en route to a share of sixth place.Just one shot different, he quipped, drawing laughter when asked to compare that round to Fridays. Nothing else. But Iwata, currently second on the Japan Golf Tour money list with a win in the Sega Sammy Cup, said he was finding plenty of differences in the game in the United States.Japan and America, the course setting is really different, he said The course here has a lot of distance on the par-fours.In Japan, I dont use a long iron a lot, but here I have to use a long iron a lot.Iwata opened his round with a birdie, and picked up shots at the fourth and eighth before his only bogey of the day at nine.He really got things going with a 23-foot eagle at 11, which was followed by birdies at 12 and 13.After that, he said, the thought of shooting 27 on the back nine crossed his mind. After a par at the 14th, Iwata birdied 15, 16 and 17 before closing with his par.

Golf: Jones, Day lead as weather delays PGA Championship

Posted:

KOHLER (AFP) - Australians Matt Jones and Jason Day were the leaders on the course when weather halted play for the day on Friday in the second round of the PGA Championship. On a day when a wealth of birdies at Whistling Straits saw five players hold at least a share of the lead at some point, Day was nine-under par through 14 holes and Jones nine-under with six to play when the threat of lightning in the area halted play at 5:28 p.m. (21:28 GMT).Less than half an hour storms swept in and play was suspended for the night. The round was to resume on Saturday at 7 a.m. (12:00 GMT).Englands Justin Rose was eight under through 17 holes -- one stroke better than clubhouse leader David Lingmerth of Sweden, who carded a second-round 70 for a seven-under total of 137.Americans Harris English and Tony Finau were at seven-under on the course, while in the clubhouse Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth headed a group on six-under after a 67 for 138. He was joined by Scott Piercy (70) and Brendan Steele (69).American Russell Henley, who had moved as low as eight-under, was at six-under with one to play with compatriot J.B. Holmes six-under through 14.

Kerry wraps up historic Cuba flag-raising visit

Posted:

HAVANA (AFP) - Secretary of State John Kerry departed Cuba Friday after a historic daylong visit to raise the US flag at the American embassy -- a milestone in Washingtons rapprochement with its onetime foe.The top US diplomat -- the first US secretary of state to visit the island in seven decades -- left aboard his official plane at 8 pm (0000 GMT).Kerry called Friday for genuine democracy in Cuba as the American flag was raised over a US embassy in Havana for the first time in 54 years. At a pageant-filled ceremony earlier Friday, he gave the cue to hoist the Stars and Stripes over the glass-and-concrete building on the Havana waterfront.Three retired Marines who lowered the flag on January 4, 1961 -- when Washington severed ties with Havana at the height of the Cold War -- were present to hand the new flag to the Marine guard now charged with security at the embassy. The symbolic moment served as a picture-perfect coda to eight months of rapid change since the December 17 rapprochement announcement by US President Barack Obama and Cuban counterpart Raul Castro, which paved the way for the two countries to reopen their embassies on July 20.The first secretary of state to visit Cuba since 1945, Kerry said the shift in US policy did not mean Washington would stop pressing for change on the communist island. The leaders in Havana and the Cuban people should also know that the United States will always remain a champion of democratic principles and reforms, he said, in a speech delivered partly in Spanish. We remain convinced the people of Cuba would be best served by a genuine democracy where people are free to choose their leaders.Kerry later shed his jacket and tie to take a stroll around Old Havana, stopping to buy a humidor and visit a cigar and rum shop as he got a tour of the colonial district surrounded by bodyguards, journalists and crowds of bemused onlookers.Back in the United States, Obamas conservative opponents condemned the rapprochement with Washingtons long-time enemy.Republican presidential contender Marco Rubio, a Cuban-American senator from Florida, was among those who slammed the Obama administration for not inviting Cuban dissidents to the flag-raising ceremony. All the people in Cuba fighting for democracy -- when they protest, they are rounded up, arrested and beaten. None of them were invited to this event, he told Fox News.Officials said Kerry later met privately with Cuban dissidents, who have long counted Washington as their main ally and have voiced concern the new thaw will leave them out in the cold.Prominent dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez was among those present. But Berta Soler, the leader of the Ladies in White -- one of the most high-profile dissident groups -- snubbed the event as a waste (of) time.Since the rapprochement was announced, the two sides have made progress on a number of divisive issues, most notably the removal of Cuba from Washingtons list of state sponsors of terrorism.Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said the country was ready to discuss any issue with the United States, including human rights. But he warned that Cuba still has tough demands of its own, as the two sides pledged to continue talks through a high-level steering committee. They include the full lifting of the blockade -- or economic embargo -- that the US has maintained on Cuba since 1962 and the return of the usurped Cuban territory of the American navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Rodriguez told a press conference.Kerry was not scheduled to meet with either Castro or his elder brother Fidel, the icon who led Cuba from its 1959 revolution until his retirement in 2006.Underlining the sticking points still complicating relations, Fidel Castro said in an essay published in Cuban state media Thursday -- his 89th birthday -- that the United States owes Cuba many millions of dollars because of the trade embargo.Cuba says the embargo has cost it $116 billion. The United States, for its part, says Cuba owes $7 billion to American citizens and companies whose property was seized after Castro came to power.Kerry reiterated that the Obama administration strongly favors lifting the embargo. But Obama faces an uphill battle as he needs approval from Congress, where both houses are currently controlled by his Republican opponents.Kerry said lifting the embargo was a two-way street that would also require the Cuban government to allow greater freedoms.Theres got to be some progress in the context of human rights because you cant normalize without that, he told journalists. There is no way Congress is going to vote to lift the embargo if they (the Cubans) are not moving with respect to issues of conscience.

IS rings rebel bastion near Aleppo: Syrian monitor

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - The Islamic State on Friday besieged a strategic bastion of rebels fighting both them and the Syrian government after less than a week of combat in which at least 121 people died, a monitoring group said.Since Sunday, the Islamists have taken control of a series of areas near the strategic northern town of Marea in Aleppo province, which lies about 35 kilometres (22 miles) from Aleppo city and is on a major road to the Turkish border. On Friday evening, the IS (Islamic State) wrested the village of Tlaline, thereby totally encircling Marea, said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The jihadists are now besieging the town from the east, north, south and southwest, he said.He added that the IS group also control the road to the west of the town which leads to the Turkish border 25 kilometres away.Tlaline is in the hands of IS, said Mamoun al-Khatib, the head of Shahba, an anti-regime news agency based in Aleppo.IS is raping our villages and towns one by one, we are crying for help but no one is responding, he said in a Facebook post. The Observatory said 76 rebels and 45 IS members have died since Sunday when the IS launched their offensive against Marea, one of the first towns to rise against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

India's Modi faces Independence Day test

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Narendra Modi will bid to silence growing criticism of his premiership in a closely-watched Indian Independence Day speech Saturday after key reforms stalled in a parliamentary session dogged by rows over corruption.Modis first August 15 address from the ramparts of Delhis Red Fort drew praise from across the political spectrum as he tackled issues such as sexual violence, foeticide, religious unrest and a lack of toilets. But 12 months on, problems are mounting up for the usually bullish prime minister who has had to beat a retreat on a controversial land bill and seen a national sales tax blocked by the opposition Congress party in a toxic monsoon session of parliament that finished on Thursday.Congress has faced criticism for its tactics, but their efforts to shift the focus onto corruption scandals involving the foreign minister and two state chief ministers have tarnished the Modi administrations image. And while the economy grew 7.5 percent for the first three months of this year, the prices of some staple foods are beginning to climb sharply with the cost of onions hitting a 22-month high.Finance Minister Arun Jaitley insisted Thursday the government would launch the key Goods and Services Tax (GST) as scheduled next April, despite the failure to push it through parliament before the recess. But commentators say the problems with GST, which should have been a relatively easy reform to steer through, show how the once sure-footed Modi is now stumbling. The transformation in one year is quite amazing, Hartosh Singh Bal, of the influential current affairs magazine Caravan, told AFP.Last year, PM Modi, a great communicator, addressed the nation from a position of absolute strength. This year he will be speaking from a totally different position.Modi used last years speech to announce the end of Soviet-style economic planning by abolishing a planning commission which had been setting out five-year strategies since the early 1950s.The only major policy to have been trailed ahead of this years speech is a possible reform to army pensions. But Bal said Modi would have to address the failure to win approval for GST, which is meant to replace a myriad of complex state and national levies, and that he could also speak out on corruption.Even members of his own party have spoken of their shame over a scandal in the state of Madhya Pradesh where thousands of people are said to have paid bribes in return for jobs or places in training institutes. A number of people linked to the scandal have died in suspicious circumstances.I think it is necessary, even expected, that he speak of these issues tomorrow but will he, no one can say for sure, said Bal.Modis government has now lost its political initiative which cant just be regained by a speech but will be decided in Bihar. The northern state of Bihar, Indias third largest with a population of around 100 million, holds elections in late September or early October, with the BJP facing an uphill battle.Defeat would be a massive blow to Modi, whose party suffered an embarrassing wipeout in Januarys elections to the Delhi assembly. Writing in The Hindustan Times, the analyst DK Singh said that while Modi remained popular, his government will not be able to deflect the blame (onto Congress) if it does not keep its promises to voters.A major security operation is in place across the capital for the breakfast-time speech while extra troops have been sent to Kashmir, the troubled Himalayan territory that has been divided between India and Pakistan since the two nations won independence from Britain in 1947.

150-200 dead in Libya 'massacre': ambassador

Posted:

TRIPOLI (AFP) - A battle between Islamic State group jihadists and local gunmen in Sirte has left between 150 and 200 dead, a Libyan diplomat said Friday, warning of a massacre in the coastal city.A real massacre is taking place, and we call on the international community to intervene, Libyan ambassador to France, Chibani Abuhamoud, told AFP.A Sirte council official said earlier that the fighting erupted Tuesday as authorities in the militia-held capital Tripoli, opposed to Libyas internationally recognised government, announced the launch of an operation to retake the city from IS.A real war has been going on in Sirte since Tuesday, the council official said.IS militants and armed residents from the city have been fighting continuously, he said, adding that Sirte was also being hit by air strikes. The defence ministry in Tripoli, which was seized last year by a militia alliance known as Fajr Libya, announced Tuesday the launch of an operation to liberate Sirte. It said the offensive was being spearheaded by youths and residents from Sirte and our air force and revolutionary fighters. The ambassador, who answers to the recognised government, said the clashes erupted after the IS assassinated an imam, or Muslim prayer leader, from the influential Al-Farjan tribe at the start of the week. The jihadists have since been massacring people, even killing people in their homes, Abuhamoud charged.Libya has descended into chaos since the fall of dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2011. It has two parliaments and two governments vying for power, one based in Tripoli and one in Tobruk in the east.Only the Tobruk-based government is recognised by the international community.IS, which already controls large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, has exploited the chaos in Libya, notably taking control in June of Sirte, 450 kilometres (280 miles) east of Tripoli. The jihadists control an eastern district in Sirte, Kadhafis hometown, known as Neighbourhood Three. The Tobruk government has condemned the violence in Sirte and urged the international community to assume its moral responsibilities against IS.It said Tuesday that world powers were using double standards by fighting IS in Syria and Iraq and turning a blind eye to the growing presence of the jihadists in Libya.

US oil prices edge up from 6 1/2 year low

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - US oil prices rallied a bit Friday in a technical bounce after closing at the lowest level in six and a half years in the prior session.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for September delivery added 27 cents at $42.50 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.European benchmark Brent oil for delivery in September dipped 19 cents to $49.03 a barrel in London.Citi Futures analyst Tim Evans said Market fundamentals remain soft with most observers concluding the market will become even more glutted in the period ahead. US oil producers added two more rigs to 672 for the week ending August 14, according to Baker Hughes, in a sign that oil production will likely linger at high levels despite lower crude prices.Adding to the downward pressure has been a clearly bearish outage at a BP refinery in the Midwestern state of Indiana, depressing crude demand, said Andy Lipow, head of Houston consultancy Lipow Oil Associates. Also Friday, the Department of Commerce confirmed that it approved crude exports from the US to Mexico in exchange for an unspecified similar quantity of Mexican crude, a senior administration official said.Lipow said the move could lead to the export of 100,000 barrels of crude from heavily-supplied areas of the US and would be supportive of prices. The policy could also be another crack in the wall to permit oil exports, he said. But Matt Smith, director of commodity research at ClipperData, said Fridays rise in US prices was primarily technical rather than a response to news of the US-Mexico oil swap. However, a full-fledged lifting of the US oil export ban would be impactful, he added. It is a newsworthy development but its not necessarily a price mover at this point, Smith said.

Dollar gains on solid US economic data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar gained against the euro Friday after solid US economic data boosted the chances of a Federal Reserve interest rate increase.Besides the euro, the dollar advanced on the pound, dipped against the Japanese yen and was essentially flat against the Swiss franc. The Labor Department said its producer price index rose 0.2 percent in July, slightly above the 0.1 percent increase projected by analysts.Industrial output increased 0.6 percent in July, far above the revised 0.1 percent gain in June, due to a strong gain in automobile manufacturing. Those reports contrasted with Eurostat data that showed the eurozone expanded at 0.3 percent in the three months to June after a gain of 0.4 percent in the first quarter.Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions, said the US data kept alive the chance of an imminent Fed rate hike and helped to offset some of the worries about the effects of the China currency devaluation. The dollar lost ground this week after China cheapened its currency and oil tumbled to six-year lows, global headwinds that markets saw as potentially keeping the Fed from raising interest rates this year, Manimbo said.Ultimately, though, the Fed would base its rate decision on the health of the US economy which has shown steady, if uneven, signs of improvement.

Amla guides South Africa to six-wicket win

Posted:

DURBAN (AFP) - Hashim Amla guided South Africa to a comfortable six-wicket win in the first Twenty20 international against New Zealand at Kingsmead on Friday.New Zealand squandered a good start, losing seven wickets for 49 runs as they made 151 for eight in their 20 overs. Amla hit 48 and shared half-century partnerships with AB de Villiers and Rilee Rossouw before being caught off fast bowler Adam Milne with only five runs needed to win.New Zealand captain Kane Williamson shared a quick-fire first wicket partnership of 68 in eight overs with Martin Guptill after the Black Caps were sent in. The tourists were still in a strong position before a momentary lapse of concentration by Guptill sparked a collapse.Guptill was run out for 42 off the third ball of the 13th over after the Black Caps reached 102 for one.Guptill was slow to return to his crease after looking for a second run and was beaten by a pinpoint throw from the deep by Farhaan Behardien to wicketkeeper Morne van Wyk.Colin Munro was caught off the next ball and the New Zealand innings lost momentum. After the start we had we would have liked a few more, said Williamson, who made a sparkling 42 off 21 balls before being stumped off man of the match, left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso.South African T20 captain Faf du Plessis was a late withdrawal because of a knee injury, with De Villiers, the one-day captain, taking over.We started a bit slowly (with the ball), but the way we pulled it back was amazing. Credit to Aaron Phangiso, he slowed things down, said de Villiers.Phangiso took two for 29, medium-pacer David Wiese took two for 24 and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada claimed two late wickets. The second and final T20 will be at Centurion on Sunday before the sides meet in a three-match ODI series.
