Aerial Assault drone is armed with hacking weapons

Posted:

LAS VEGAS (AFP) - Hackers arsenal on Sunday was beefed up with a drone armed with weapons to crack into wireless computer networks at close range, whether they be in skyscrapers or walled compounds.David Jordan of US-based Aerial Assault was at an infamous Def Con hacker gathering showing off a drone that could be dispatched on missions to land atop buildings or hover outside walls and probe for cracks in computer networks. There has never been this capability before, Jordan said as he showed the drone to AFP.The drone was equipped with software tools used to perform the kind of penetration testing done by hackers or computer security professionals who seek vulnerabilities in computer networks. As with drones previously launched by hackers, the Aerial Assault model scans for unsecured wireless connections to networks, according to Jordan.Along with assessing weaknesses of networks, the drone logs precise GPS coordinates of a target and takes all the information back to its handler, he said.Aerial Assault drones were for sale, at a price of $2,500 each.Hackers at Def Con early on turned to drones for sniffing out unprotected wireless Internet networks, but capabilities Jordan said were built into the Aerial Assault drone raised the ante with automated tools that could be flown past physical defenses.

Indian woman who was married off at just 11 months old fights against child marriage

Posted:

NEW DELHI (Agencies) - A 20-year-old woman whose parents entered her into a marriage when she just 11 months old has now rejected that marriage and is fighting to have it annulled.According to an interview with Gulf News published last month, Santadevi Meghwal discovered at the age of 16 that she had been entered into an arranged marriage when she was not yet a toddler. When her would-be husband and in-laws showed up at her home in the western state of Rajasthan, she refused to leave her house.Meghwal, a college student studying to become a teacher, was disenchanted at the sight of her “husband,” who she described as crude and aggressive to the Sydney Morning Herald. Further, his family wanted her to abandon her education and become a housewife, which is not the life Meghwal has in mind. Her “husband” went on to stalk her when she went to college and threaten her, actions that eventually led her parents to support her decision to reject the marriage, even after her village’s council, called a caste panchayat, urged her family to pay a lofty fine of 1.6 million rupees (over $25,000) and banished them from the village in lieu of sending her to live with the man, who is now 28. Meghwal then turned to Kriti Bharti, a child rights activist with the Saarthi Trust NGO, for help. According to NDTV, they are working to have the marriage annulled by mutual consent and planned to pursue legal action concerning the fine threatened by the village council. An annulment could take as long as a year or more to process and her “husband’s” family could still present challenges, but Meghwal is undeterred.“I am not bothered,” Meghwal told Gulf News. “Let them drag the case. I know the law is on my side and I will win the case.” Bharti, who is trained as a child psychologist, has a growing record of getting child marriages annulled, winning 27 annulments through May, according to the Guardian. The first of them was awarded in 2012. While child marriage in India is technically illegal, the country is home to more child brides than anywhere else in the world. According to UNICEF’s latest estimates, 43 percent of Indian women aged 20-24 were first married prior to the age of 18.Rates of child marriage in India are highest in poorer, rural parts of the country such as the state of Rajasthan, where Meghwal lives. And while the practice is generally on decline among brides younger than 15, the marriage rate has actually increased for brides ages 15 to 18, according to the Girls Not Brides organization. Being married as a minor puts girls at increased risk of HIV and domestic violence, according to the International Center for Research on Women.

Hard to let go, says Clarke amid off-field strife reports

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia captain Michael Clarke said Monday that cricket was his entire life and it was hard to let go, as a report claimed the disastrous England tour has been plagued by off-field dramas.Clarke, 34, announced he was retiring after England completed a crushing innings and 78-run victory in the fourth Test at Trent Bridge on Saturday to take an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the five-match Ashes series. He will play the final Test at The Oval on August 20 before the curtain comes down on a distinguished career. My entire life has been about cricket. Ive thought about the great game every day for as long as I can remember, he said in a column for the Sydney Daily Telegraph.Definitely telling my grandfather was perhaps the hardest part and he was very emotional. Pops made it clear to me over the past 10 years that watching me play cricket is a big part of what keeps him going.I tried not to let emotion overcome me -- Ive done too much crying over the years.Clarke, one of the best batsmen of his generation but plagued by injuries, knew the time was right to go, having reached 25 just six times in his last 30 Test innings.Once I got back to my hotel after day two (of the fourth Test) I spoke to my wife, Kyly, and then I went straight up to (Shane Warnes) Warnies room, he said.My mind was made up, but sometimes you look for that security that I wasnt just making the decision on emotion. That I was making the right decision for the right reasons.Kyly and Warnie both gave me that support.Clarkes comments came as the same newspaper reported that off-field dramas had caused friction during the tour, including a long-running feud between the wives of two senior players. It also claimed Clarkes apparent refusal to travel on the team bus or socialise with teammates was an issue, while the sacking of popular vice-captain Brad Haddin after time off for family reasons did not go down well. The newspaper said it was the year-long disintegration in the off-field relationship between Clarke and the rest of the team that hindered any chance of Ashes success. He often chooses to travel by private car instead of the team bus and rarely attends team get-togethers.On the night that he made his decision to step down, team members were stunned when he joined them for a rare drink in the hotel bar, although he ended the night drowning his sorrows with former teammate Shane Warne rather than any of the current side.Clarke added that he was proud that right up to the last day of my career I can look myself in the mirror and say that I have left nothing in the tank in terms of my work ethic and trying my best.

Tennis: Nishikori outlasts Isner to win Washington title

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Japans Kei Nishikori rallied to defeat big-serving American John Isner 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Washington Open and capture his 10th career ATP title. The 25-year-old Asian number one won his third crown of the season after defending titles at Memphis and Barcelona, taking the $343,000 (312,000 euro) top prize at the US capitals combined ATP and WTA hardcourt event, a warm-up for the US Open that starts in three weeks.Im very happy to win today, Nishikori said. It was a tight match.Nishikori, who will rise one spot in world rankings Monday to match his career high of fourth, was last years US Open runner-up to Croatian Marin Cilic, whom he beat in the Washington semi-finals in their first meeting since last year in New York.Im looking forward to playing again in the US Open, Nishikori said.Nishikori became the first Asian singles winner in the tournaments 47-year history despite connecting on only 59 percent of his first serves. He managed to win 42 of his 46 first-serve points.Isner, who won his only prior meeting with Nishikori in Aprils Miami quarter-finals, missed a chance for his 11th career ATP crown after winning his third consecutive Atlanta title last week.Isner, who fired 18 aces to five for Nishikori, will jump from 18th to 12th in Mondays rankings. Its never easy against a big server like John, Nishikori said.It was Isners third loss in a Washington final after falling to Andy Roddick in 2007 and Juan Martin Del Potro in 2013.Isner took the only break of the first set in the last game. Nishikori netted a forehand to surrender two break chances but Isner needed only one thanks to a service return forehand winner down the line.Nishikori answered by opening the second set with a break, as Isner hit a forehand wide on the decisive point on a call that withstood review, and then held serve five times to force a third set.Nishikori jumped on a second serve for a return winner to break Isner, then held at love to grab a 3-1 lead in the final set. He held at love again in the eighth game for a 5-3 edge and again at love in the last game, winning on a forehand winner and raising his arms in the air to celebrate. In the later womens final, American Sloane Stephens plays in her first WTA title match against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who seeks her eighth WTA crown and first since last year at Moscow.Stephens, ranked five spots ahead of her rival at 35th, had been the highest-ranked player never to reach a WTA final before making it in her 84th tour event.

Tennis: Retirement not on Nadal radar

Posted:

MONTREAL (AFP) - Rafael Nadal insisted Sunday that retirement is not on his mind despite a year in which he was dethroned as French Open champion and saw his ranking slip to its lowest in a decade. The 29-year-old former world number one and 14-time major winner said that he will hang up his racquet only when he has lost the thrill of playing the sport. For sure, there is more behind than in front in my career. Im sure of that, Nadal said on the eve of the Montreal Masters -- a major tune-up for the US Open, which starts in three weeks. But I dont think about retirement. Day by day is my way to work. In 2005, I was aged 19 and Im sure that I wont be playing tennis until 39.I have motivation to keep going so its difficult to think about not playing. But when it comes, I will know. When I wake up without motivation to improve, that will be the end. But until that day arrives, Im here and enjoying it.Nadal slumped to number 10 in the world in June after he lost his French Open title and then went on to suffer a second round exit at Wimbledon. But he won on clay in Hamburg recently and hopes to use that to his advantage in his summer hardcourt opener. It was in Montreal a decade ago that Nadal claimed the first hardcourt title of his career when he beat Andre Agassi in the final. This week, he is chasing a fourth Canadian honour. He is the seventh seed in Montreal and will play either Ukraines Sergiy Stakhovsky or Canadas Filip Peliwo in his first match.

Tennis: Murray 'happy and lucky' to be father

Posted:

MONTREAL (AFP) - Andy Murray said he is feeling happy and lucky at becoming a father after he and wife Kim announced they will become parents for the first time. The 28-year-old world number three and Olympic champion will be the latest member of the top 10 to be a dad when the couples first child is born, believed to be February next year.Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka are already well-versed in juggling the demands of family and tennis.Im not thinking what the impact (of becoming a father) will have on my career, said Murray, a former Wimbledon and US Open champion. We are both extremely excited, happy and we feel lucky. But this is also private news and stuff we want to keep close to our family and friends.Murray and longtime girlfriend Kim Sears, 27, married in April and since then his form on tour has been impressive with a 27-4 winning record. In that time, he won his first ever titles on clay and reached the semi-finals at the French Open and Wimbledon.Meanwhile, Murray said he was hoping for the chance to face world number one Djokovic in the closing stages of the Montreal Masters as tries to put his hardcourt game into gear ahead of the US Open which starts in three weeks time.Players have competed this season with Novak (48-3 this season with six titles), said Murray. Hes just been that little bit better. Thats why hes number one in the world.Hes won some close matches in the big events. Hes obviously the favourite here. He definitely deserves to be the best in the world, though guys have pushed him very close as well.It should be an interesting week. Hopefully I can play some good tennis and get the opportunity to play against him.The Scot is seeded to make the final in Montreal where Djokovic, who has not touched a racquet since beating Federer for his third Wimbledon title a month ago, should be waiting.Murray, by contrast, helped Britain into the Davis Cup semi-finals the week after play concluded at the All England Club.He then made a stuttering start to the North American hardcourt swing as he lost his opening match in Washington last week. But his exit at the hands of Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili was still encouraging for the world number three.I came very close and I had a chance to close it out when I served for it in the third set, Murray said of his Washington setback. I feel OK, it just takes time to get used to the hardcourts. You need to get used to them again, My match was two and a half hours long, so thats a positive in some ways. With Munich, Madrid and London Queens club titles to hand in 2015, Murray is not lacking in confidence. But an Australian Open final and semis in Paris and Wimbledon have left him hungry to take a big step at a major once again. My consistency has been better this year than in 2014, my game has improved, he said prior to a Montreal second-round start against one of two Spaniards -- Feliciano Lopez or Tommy Robredo.Ive played good tennis at most of big events this year. Ive given myself opportunities in almost every event Ive played.

Woods sets sights on strong PGA Championship

Posted:

KOHLER (United States) (AFP) - Tiger Woods, mired in the worst slump of his pro career, insists theres reason for optimism as he looks to the final major of 2015 -- the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. On the face of it, the 14-time major champion is on a salvage mission, having missed back-to-back cuts at major tournaments for the first time in his career with early exits at the US Open and British Open.Whether Woods can halt that streak seems a more viable question than whether he can end a major title drought that now stretches back to his 2008 US Open triumph.Woods, absent from the pre-PGA Bridgestone Invitational because his lowly 266th world ranking didnt qualify him for the elite World Golf Championships event, said his performance next week will dictate the rest of his year.If he has a strong enough showing, he could add the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina to his schedule in a bid to qualify for the US PGA Tours FedEx Cup playoffs. If he doesnt qualify, his season could be finished, and hell find himself attending the Deutsche Bank championship as non-playing tournament host.Hopefully I can get off my butt and get into the top 100 (in the FedEx Cup standings) and play the event, he said this week.It seems a modest enough goal heading into a major championship he has won four times. In fact, Woods is the only player to win the PGA Championship in back-to-back years since the event changed to stroke play.He accomplished the feat twice, in 1999 and 2000 as well as in 2006 and 2007.Woods was encouraged by his performance at the PGA Quicken Loans National, where his eight-under total of 276 was his lowest 72 hole score in relation to par at a PGA event since the 2013 BMW Championship. It was nice to be able to struggle but score, Woods said. Finally I can feel my hands again which is nice. Its a process of putting one foot in front of the other and one day Ill get to the point where Im in contention again.Whether thats at Whistling Straits or not, Woods said, he has plenty of time.Ive got years ahead of me, thats how I look at it, not just this season, Woods says. Ive got years. And if you would have asked me that back when I had my back surgery (in 2014), I didnt really know. That was a tough period in my career and my life. But now Im on the good side of it.Woods woes this season -- from career-worst rounds on the PGA Tour and his missed cuts at Chambers Bay and St. Andrews to his break-up with ski star girlfriend Lindsey Vonn -- have provided plenty of fodder for pundits preaching his career is in irrevocable decline. But Woods said part of the problem is that even as he struggles, he remains under scrutiny that few other golfers endure.Ive had to answer questions every round where most players dont, Woods said. Obviously with instant news, things are different now in this world.Top players are analyzed a little bit more than they used to be. Its a different generation and its the way it is.
