Football: Klopp has cash to cope with fixture demands says Wenger

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claims Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has no reason to complain about his teams fixture pile-up because of the vast wealth enjoyed by top Premier League clubs.Wengers league leaders face Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday as Klopp struggles with a severe injury list, and to make matters worse Liverpool face a run of six games in 18 days. But Klopp made 11 changes for the Reds 2-2 FA Cup third round draw at Exeter on Friday. The former Borussia Dortmund chief says the biggest difference between managing in England rather than Germany is the number of games. But Wenger, now in his 20th season at Arsenal, insisted Klopp should be able to adapt to the English game, especially with the financial resources available at Anfield.I must say you get that from everybody who comes to England at the start because you have to adapt to the English style, Wenger told reporters on Monday.I was like that, and Im still in favour of a winter break, but without losing the traditions of English football. That is play over Christmas, and maybe have a break in January. But I believe as well that we go a little bit overboard because today the English clubs are in a financial situation to have a squad of 25 top, top level players. Its not like it was 25 years ago, so we cannot always complain that we play too much because we have players who can rotate, players who want to play.In every club now, when I look at the bench I am quite impressed with the players who are there and can play, so I dont believe that its like we have 13 players who have to play every single game.Klopp has introduced his successful gegenpressing style at Anfield after it helped him to five major honours during his time in charge of Dortmund. But the physical exertion required to succeed with such a method of play has been highlighted by some as a reason for the number of injuries accumulating at Liverpool.Wenger dismissed that theory, saying: I dont think you can explain the injuries of the players by the intensity of the game.First of all its difficult for me to assess this situation because I dont know exactly whats happening. Every injury is an individual case.

Football: Arsenal steeled for Anfield examination

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will face a stern test of their Premier League title credentials when they take on Liverpool on Wednesday.Wengers side head to Anfield two points clear at the head of the table and having won five of their last six league games. The weekend FA Cup third round victory over Sunderland extended their winning run and Wenger acknowledges his sides recent success has strengthened the belief they can push on during the second half of the season. The Gunners manager, though, knows any meeting with Liverpool carries an extra edge that was demonstrated when the sides met on Merseyside last season, with the home side clinching a point thanks to Martin Skrtels stoppage-time equaliser. The momentum creates confidence and confidence is vital at that level, Wenger said.In December and now in January we have been consistent and we go into a very important part of the season because we play many games.Every time we go to Anfield, we face a team who is up for it. Its always a ferocious battle, no matter who the manager is.They had a very strong manager before, they have a very strong one now and Jurgen Klopp has the personality to do well there.Wenger hopes to add Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny to his squad this week.I expect Mohamed yes, we are positive that this week it can happen, he said. And his options will shortly be strengthened by the return to fitness of Alexis Sanchez, although the Chile striker will not make the trip to Liverpool. We think he will be short for Wednesday, said Wenger. He has a chance to be available for Sunday against Stoke. He is always keen to play.- Big challenge -=================Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is looking forward rather than back as he prepares to take on Wenger in English football for the first time. The pair have previously met at Champions League level with honours almost even, Wenger enjoying three wins to Klopps two and a draw from his time in charge at Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.Klopp took over at Liverpool after the sides had drawn 0-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League in August. And the German admits watching Wengers work at closer quarters has impressed him even more as the Liverpool boss prepares for huge back-to-back home games against the Gunners and Manchester United. We shouldnt talk too much about my experiences of playing against Arsenal. We will find a current plan for this game, Klopp said. Its always a big challenge to play against clubs like Arsenal or Manchester United. Its a good challenge, not easy, but really interesting. We have to make good decisions in the right moment. We are looking forward to these games. My respect for Arsene Wenger grows day by day. Its really intensive to work in the Premier League and hes done a brilliant job.Klopps remarks regarding Wenger, looking to lead Arsenal to a fourth league title but first since 2004, reflect his initial impressions of managing in England.Klopp, who took over at Anfield in October, said that the number of fixtures has been the biggest difference to managing on the continent, with Liverpool facing the possibility of playing nine games in January. That workload is stretching a squad that has been badly hit by injuries, although Klopp hopes to have a number of key players back for the game on Wednesday when the eighth-placed Reds will be looking for a third win in four league games. After having no senior central defenders available for last Fridays 0-0 FA Cup draw at Exeter, ex-Arsenal defender Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho are both expected to be fit.Captain Jordan Henderson is also set to return in midfield and winger Jordon Ibe is fit after hamstring trouble.

Turkish teenager stabs Jewish teacher in Marseille

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - A Turkish teenager who stabbed a Jewish teacher with a machete on Monday in the southern French city of Marseille told police he was attacking in the name of the Islamic State group, a prosecutor said. The attack, which left the 35-year-old teacher with an injured shoulder and hand, occurred in broad daylight in the south of the city, prosecutor Brice Robin said. The 15-year-old ethnic Kurd rushed the victim from behind and stabbed him in the shoulder, then chased after him for a few metres (yards) until he fell, Robin said. The victim fended off the assailant using his arms and legs, as well as his holy book, which was damaged in the scuffle, the prosecutor said. The suspect has the profile of someone who was radicalised on the Internet, Robin told a press briefing. He claimed to have been acting for Daesh, Robin said, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group. You get the sense that he does not have a full grasp of the fundamentals of Islam, he added. The boy even admitted to investigators that he planned to arm himself and kill police as soon as he is released. The prosecutor said the teenagers family was unaware of his radicalisation and that he was a good student. It appears there was a form of premeditation with the intent of killing the victim because of his religion, Robin said. The teenager, who will turn 16 next week, faces charges of attempted murder on grounds of religion and defence of terrorism.Prime Minister Manuel Valls reacted with a tweet saying: The anti-Semitic aggression against a teacher in Marseille is revolting. The teacher was on his way to work at the Franco-Hebraic Institute when he was attacked. The incident came nearly two months after another assault, north of Marseille, in which three people shouting anti-Semitic obscenities and support for the Islamic State group stabbed a Jewish teacher, injuring him in the arms, legs and stomach.

SpaceX will attempt ocean landing of rocket Jan 17

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - SpaceX will try again Sunday to land its Falcon 9 rocket on an ocean platform, one month after successfully returning the rockets first stage to an upright landing on solid ground.Previous attempts to set down the rockets first stage on a floating barge in the Atlantic Ocean have failed, but the California-based company will try again on January 17, a spokesman confirmed. This time, the Falcon 9 will launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.According to NASA, the rocket will carry Jason-3, an international mission led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to continue US - European satellite measurements of the topography of the ocean surface. The launch is planned for 1:42 pm Eastern time (1842 GMT), at the opening of a 30-second launch window.A backup launch opportunity will occur on January 18 at 1:31 pm (1831 GMT).SpaceX, headed by Internet entrepreneur Elon Musk, has tried three times before to land its Falcon 9 on what it calls a droneship platform, marked with an X.Each attempt failed, after the rocket either missed, collided with the barge or tipped over after setting down.On December 22, the company celebrated its first successful landing of the rockets first stage on solid ground, as part of SpaceXs mission to make rockets reusable, much like airplanes. The goal is to bring down the cost of rocket launches and make space flight more affordable and sustainable in the years to come.

Top T20 ranking at stake for Pakistan, New Zealand

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AFP) - New Zealand and Pakistan both have the opportunity to vault to the top of the Twenty20 world standings over the next 10 days, according to the congested rankings released on Tuesday. Although they start their three-match series in Auckland on Friday with Pakistan ranked sixth and New Zealand seventh, they are equal on 114 points. But with only four points separating the top seven teams, if either side can win all three matches they will replace the West Indies at the head of the table, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement. If the series is settled 2-1, then the winner will leapfrog South Africa to fifth position. The New Zealand-Pakistan series features the return to international cricket of convicted Pakistani spot-fixer Mohammad Amir who has served a jail term and five-year ban from the game. However, the New Zealanders, fresh from a 2-0 Twenty20 series win over Sri Lanka, maintained that the appearance of Amir was not an issue. That is not something that worries us, all-rounder Grant Elliott said. All we are concerned about is how good someone is on the cricket field. What I do know about Mohammad Amir is I played him in 2009 in the Test series and he was a very quick bowler then. It will be interesting to see how he comes back from what has happened. As a cricketer you need to focus on what is in front of you whether you are bowling or batting without that mentality it is very difficult to perform under pressure. With a number of Twenty20 Internationals to be played in the lead up to the ICC World Twenty20 India in March, there is likely to be plenty of reshuffling at the top of the world rankings. The biggest player movements in the latest list are Afghanistans wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad and fast bowler Dawlat Zadran who both make the Twenty20 top 10.Shahzad has jumped 12 places to eighth on the batting list after scoring 151 runs in two matches against Zimbabwe, while Zadran claims the bowling eighth spot after claiming five wickets in the same series.

Hastings replaces rested Marsh in Brisbane ODI

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Paceman John Hastings has been called up to Australias squad for the second one-day international against India in Brisbane later this week, selectors said on Tuesday.Hastings will replace all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who will be rested from Fridays Gabba match ahead of the third game of the series in Melbourne on Sunday.Mitch is a tremendous asset to Australian cricket and we are conscious of managing his workload and his travel, especially with so much cricket to come during the rest of this summer and beyond, chief selector Rod Marsh said in a statement.By taking this decision we have opted to give him an extra day at home in Perth after match one, before he flies to Melbourne on Thursday to prepare for Sundays third match of the series.Marsh said Hastings was a high-quality replacement who had been in excellent form for the Melbourne Stars in the domestic Big Bash League.John also showed his quality with a match-winning spell of 3 for 21 in the decisive one-day international of the series against England in Manchester in September, so we know what he can do if called upon, he added.

Multiple jihadist attacks kill more than 30 in Iraq

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Jihadist gunmen and bombers killed at least 12 people in a busy market area of Baghdad while a double blast at a cafe north of the Iraqi capital claimed another 20 lives. An attack claimed by the Islamic State group and involving suicide explosions, gunfights and hostage-taking wreaked chaos in the eastern neighbourhood of Baghdad al-Jadida.A car came... gunmen came out of it and spread out. They started shooting, killing people, there were lots of dead people, said a witness, Salman Hussein. The shocked young man recounted how one of the attackers held a shop owner and spoke on a mobile phone before detonating his suicide belt. The car they came in was laden with explosives and also blew up, he said. The head of Baghdad Operations Command, Lieutenant General Abdelamir al-Shammari, insisted to reporters on the scene that the situation was quickly brought under control. He denied reports by several officials in the Baghdad police and in the interior ministry that the attackers held several people hostage in the nearby Zahrat Baghdad mall. But a senior police officer gave a different account, saying the attackers sprayed gunfire and blew up a car bomb on the street before entering the mall and taking hostages. When the security forces got too close, they killed three hostages, he said. Several other sources gave a similar account. The sequence of the attack, a departure from Islamic States usual modus operandi in Baghdad, remained unclear and the statement posted by the jihadists online provided few details. It said the attack was carried out by four soldiers of the caliphate and targeted Shiites. It said one of the IS members blew himself up in an explosives-laden vehicle when the apostates sent reinforcements.IS claimed that a total of 90 people were killed or wounded, but the group has previously exaggerated the number of casualties caused by its attacks. These people were shooting everywhere, there was even one guy with an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade launcher), said Fadhel, another witness from Shiite neighbourhood Baghdad al-Jadida.I saw the body of a small child strewn on the ground over there... What were the sins these people committed to deserve this? he said.Police and hospital sources put the casualty toll from the attack, one of the worst to hit Baghdad in months, at 12 dead and more than 30 wounded.Almost simultaneously, bombings killed at least 20 people at a cafe in the town of Muqdadiyah northeast of Baghdad, security officers said.A bomb exploded at the cafe and a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged vehicle after people gathered at the scene, a police captain and an army colonel said.IS also claimed the Muqdadiyah attack and named the suicide bomber as Iraqi Abu Abdallah. The US condemned both attacks as barbaric acts of terrorism, which it said once again display the utter disregard ISIL has for the lives of innocent civilians, using a different name for IS.The European Union said it supported Baghdad, stressing that these tragic events underline the fragility of the security situation in Iraq. The mixed province of Diyala, where Muqdadiyah is located, was declared liberated by the government almost a year ago but attacks have continued.Iraqs intelligence services announced on December 24 they had dismantled a major IS cell and made 40 arrests in Baghdad and Diyala. At least three people were killed and eight wounded in another car bomb blast in Nahrawan, south of Baghdad.Mondays combined attacks made for one of the worst days of violence in months in areas that are not active front lines.IS has suffered a number of military setbacks across Iraq in the past year. Security officials say fierce battles and relentless air strikes have depleted its manpower.Analysts see that as a reason for the drop in attacks targeting civilians in the capital, which were an almost daily occurrence two years ago.

Air strike in Iraq's Mosul targets 'millions' in IS cash: US official

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A US-led coalition air strike has destroyed a cash storage facility used by Islamic State jihadists in the Iraqi city of Mosul, a US defense official said Monday. Two 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) bombs struck the facility, destroying millions of dollars worth of cash, the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. We estimate in the millions of dollars... from all their illicit stuff: oil, looting, extortion, the official said. The strike came early Monday.CNN, which first reported the strike, said the US military believed between five and seven civilians had been killed. The US-led coalition carrying out plane and drone strikes against the IS group in Iraq and Syria has been increasingly targeting the jihadists money-making capabilities, including by bombing trucks that ferry illicit oil across Syria.Under pressure from critics who say the campaign is moving too slowly, the Pentagon has indicated it would consider a wider array of targets even if these might cause civilian deaths, provided these attacks yield significant gains against the jihadists. The defense official said the coalition had targeted cash-holding facilities once or twice in the past year, but the most recent action was probably the biggest to date. It was not immediately clear if the money had been in US dollars, some other foreign currency, or local dinars, the official added.

Thousands at far-right rally against Merkel migrant policy

LEIPZIG (AFP) - Thousands of protesters rallied in the eastern German city of Leipzig Monday against a record refugee influx they blamed for sexual violence at New Years Eve events. Many vented their anger at Chancellor Angela Merkel, whom they accuse of destroying their country by allowing in 1.1 million asylum seekers last year.We are the people, Resistance and Deport them, chanted the flag-waving crowd at the rally of LEGIDA, the local chapter of xenophobic group PEGIDA, the Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident.Refugees not welcome read one sign, showing a silhouette of three men armed with knives pursuing a woman, while another declared Islam = terror. A heavy police presence, with water canon at the ready, kept watch over the crowd, and separated them from a group of counter-demonstrators, as rain poured down.Waving a sign declaring State of injustice, 44-year-old demonstrator Lukas Richter said Merkel is breaching the constitution and must go, and that the government must close the borders and return all illegal migrants. He charged that the New Years Eve mob attacks in the western city of Cologne -- where hundreds of women reported being groped and robbed by men described as Arabs and North Africans -- highlighted the violence of foreigners in Germany that has existed for years.

Football: Lionel Messi wins record fifth Ballon d'Or

ZURICH (AFP) - Barcelona star Lionel Messi won a record fifth FIFA Ballon dOr award for the worlds best player at a ceremony in Zurich on Monday. The Argentine dethroned three-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo in adding to his four consecutive awards from 2009 to 2012.Brazil star Neymar, who also plays for Barca, came third in the vote by national team coaches and captains, and journalists. Its a very special moment to come back, to get a Ballon dOr again after the two years in which Cristiano Ronaldo won each time, said the 28-year-old Messi. It is incredible that its my fifth. This Ballon dOr means more than I could have ever dreamed of as a child.Messi, who voted for his Barca team-mate Luis Suarez, had 41 percent of the vote, Ronaldo getting 28 percent and Neymar 8.0 percent. His victory continued the duopoly of the award he enjoys with Ronaldo that has lasted since Brazilian Kaka claimed top honours in 2007.We have always had a good relationship, said Messi about his rivalry with Ronaldo. We share a profession, we have our day-to-day battles because we are playing for different teams, but it is more in the press that they compare us for one reason or another. On our part, there has always been admiration and respect.Messi was the star player as Barcelona won the treble of Champions League, La Liga and Spanish Cup last season, before also adding the Club World Cup last month.Although he became the first ever player to win the award five times, Messi had said earlier that he would swap all those individual accolades for a World Cup success.Team awards are more important than individual ones, he said, before adding that the World Cup is every players objective, its really the pinnacle.Messi and his Argentina teammates came close to winning the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 but were beaten 1-0 by Germany in the final. His Barcelona boss Luis Enrique won the coach of the year award while Jill Ellis took the womens trophy. She had guided the US to womens World Cup glory in Canada last summer, beating Japan 5-2 in the final.Carli Lloyd scored a hat-trick in that match and that was enough to help her land the FIFA womens player of the year gong. She had also previously scored the winning goals for the US in the Olympic Games finals of 2008 and 2012.Enrique edged out Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola and Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli.Brazilian Wendell Lira won the Puskas award for goal of the year for his spectacular overhead bicycle kick for Goianesia in a regional league match, edging out Messis own mazy dribble against Athletic Bilbao in last seasons Copa del Rey final.Barca and Real dominated the team of the year as well with four players each, including Messi, Neymar and Ronaldo. The only players from outside the two Spanish superpowers were Bayern Munichs Germany international goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventuss France midfielder Paul Pogba.

Tennis: Bouchard comeback gathers steam in Australia

HOBART (AFP) - Canadas Eugenie Bouchard swept into the second round of the Hobart International with a straight sets demolition of American Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Monday. The former world number 5 now ranked 47 took just 57 minutes to dispose of one-time tournament finalist Mattek-Sands 6-2, 6-1.Bouchard, 21, who reached the semi-finals of the 2014 Australian and French Opens before playing in the final at Wimbledon in the same year, suffered a big setback at the US Open last September. She sustained a head injury after slipping in the locker room and was forced to pull out of her fourth-round match at Flushing Meadows with a concussion, which also forced her to withdrew from an event in Wuhan, China later that month.I was feeling pretty solid out there, Bouchard said after her latest win.The foundation of my game is to be really aggressive, but I also want to have that balance with consistency and I think I did a good job of that today.Bouchard lost just 14 points on serve in her first win in three attempts against the more experienced American. It was nice to get a win against her finally, Bouchard said. Shes a great player and I was really aware that when she came to the net she is really solid, so I was just always trying to pass her.Bouchard said she was feeling good. The most important part right now for sure is feeling healthy and I walked off the court feeling healthy, and thats a very good positive sign, she said. The Canadian will next play eighth seed Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium.
