Massive blizzard shuts down eastern United States

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - A deadly blizzard blanketed the eastern United States in near-record amounts of snow Saturday, shutting down New York and Washington in a colossal storm expected to affect more than 85 million people.More than 4,400 flights were cancelled as the mega-storm ground airports in New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore to a halt, shuttered transport in the US capital and prompted New York officials to issue a sweeping travel ban.At least 10 people died in North Carolina, Maryland, Kentucky and Virginia, while more than 200,000 people were left without power and 2,200 National Guard personnel were drafted in across 12 states.Forecasters said the storm -- dubbed Snowzilla -- would last into Sunday with two feet (60 centimeters) expected in Washington and 20 inches expected in New York, making it one of the Big Apples five biggest blizzards in history.State Governor Andrew Cuomo closed all roads in New York, Americas financial and entertainment capital home to 8.4 million, Long Island, and bridges and tunnels west to New Jersey.Bus services were suspended at noon, and overland commuter and subway trains in and out of Manhattan were shut from 4:00 pm (2100 GMT) as Broadway cancelled performances, museums closed and shops shuttered.Metro and bus networks were shut down in Washington for the entire weekend, and largely shut in Philadelphia and New Jersey on Saturday.Strong winds are causing coastal flooding concerns for a large portion of the East Coast, the National Weather Forecast (NWS) warned, and thousands of motorists were stranded for hours on portions of ice-coated highway in the south.Dangerous stormSafety is our number one priority, Cuomo told reporters. This is a dangerous storm. As beautiful as some of the photos are of the snow falling. Its dangerous, he told CNN.Plows struggled to clear Manhattans sweeping avenues, where parked cars were buried under the snow and people coming out to enjoy the weather walked in place of normally bustling traffic. It has been very slow in the morning, but I hope people will get tired of playing with the snow and come to eat and drink something, said Juan, a barman at a restaurant in the West Village. In Washington, more than 18 inches (45 centimeters) of snow was already on the ground, with winds swirling and snow blowing around as night fell.City police chief Cathy Lanier said whiteout conditions -- virtually zero visibility -- had been reported and urged residents to stay indoors so snow plows could work to clear the streets. One resident of the capital having a blast in the snow? Tian Tian, a panda at the National Zoo. Footage of him playing in the snow quickly went viral. The NWS put a blizzard warning into effect for a large swath of the eastern United States, as hundreds of snow plows and salt spreaders struggled to clear key avenues. The storm could cause more than $1 billion in damage, NWS officials said.New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican presidential contender, left the campaign trail to oversee the emergency response in his snowbound state, where he said there were 90,000 power outages. For folks who lose power, please, given how cold the weather is, try to go and shelter in the home of a friend or family member if you can. Dont stay in the cold, he told a news conference.Nearly 120,000 power outages were reported in North Carolina, emergency officials said.Record-breaking?The NWS reported that New York could see up to 25 inches of snow and that travel was extremely dangerous due to heavy snowfall and strong winds with whiteout conditions likely.Mayor Bill de Blasio warned that more than 20 inches would put the storm in the top five in terms of accumulation since records began in the 19th century. If the blizzard leaves more than two feet in Washington, as forecast, it could surpass a record set in 1922 by a storm that dumped 28 inches over three days and killed 100 people after a roof collapsed at a theater.US Capitol Police said they were lifting a decades-old sledding ban, but the national monuments, Capitol building and Smithsonian museums were all closed.Even a massive snowball fight in Washingtons Dupont Circle, which 3,000 people said on Facebook they would attend, was postponed due to the storms ferocity. We just came back from some holidays in India so the weather is a difficult adjustment, said Justin Wilcox, 32, out taking selfies in the capital.Snow and sleet also hit the southern states of Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia -- unusual for the region.Six people were killed in road accidents in North Carolina, and deaths were also reported in Kentucky, Maryland and Virginia, officials said.Virginia state police tweeted that they responded to 989 crashes and 793 disabled vehicles across the state Friday.

Russia promises 'administrative help' but no energy subsidies

Posted:

MOSCOW: (AFP) - The Russian government will draw up measures to ease administrative costs for energy producers hit by the fall in oil prices, but will not provide financial support, Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on Saturday. The Kremlin on Friday said it was preparing an anti-crisis plan after oil prices and the ruble-dollar exchange rate briefly hit record lows, dealing a blow to an economy heavily dependent on energy exports.Asked about possible measures for oil and gas firms, Novak said: They should not be financial or fiscal, but rather in the order of administrative simplification. The governments goal is to facilitate the work of the oil companies, he said. The oil and gas sector has to increase its productivity, companies have to review their investment plans.Referring to companies tax loading, Novak said that the most important thing right now is to do nothing that could have the impact of an additional charge on the sector.Authorities have admitted that tumbling oil prices will have to see them slash government spending as they struggle to keep the deficit to under three percent of gross domestic product (GDP).So far this year, oil prices have faced a rapid descent as concerns snowballed over the strong dollar and weak demand in the faltering world economy -- particularly in Asian powerhouse China. Oil traded at just over $32 a barrel on Friday after hitting a 12-year low under $27 earlier in the week.Russias anti-crisis plan, according to business daily RBK, would include measures to support the most fragile sectors of the economy and could cost 420 billion rubles ($5.1 billion).

Kerry in Iran to reassure allies over Iran

Posted:

RIYADH: (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry, on a visit to Saudi Arabia, sought Saturday to reassure Gulf allies concerned about a perceived warming of ties between Washington and Iran.He also announced that the Syria Support Group of 20 nations and organisations will meet very shortly to help push peace in the war-ravaged country.Kerry spoke in Riyadh after meeting his Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir and other foreign ministers from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council. The United States remains concerned about some of the activities that Iran is engaged in in other countries, Kerry told reporters, citing as an example Irans support for terrorist groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon.Saudi Arabia and its Gulf neighbours perceive a lack of US engagement in the region, particularly in the face of what they see as Irans interference in Yemen, Syria, Lebanon and elsewhere. Those feelings crystallised with the historic international deal which this month lifted crippling economic sanctions on Iran in return for a scaling back of its nuclear capabilities.Kerry has long sought to calm concerns among his Gulf allies about the overtures to Iran, the worlds leading Shiite power whose relations with Sunni rival Saudi Arabia have worsened this month.Saudi Arabia and some of its allies cut diplomatic ties with Iran after protesters there burned Riyadhs embassy in Tehran and a consulate in Mashhad city. The violence broke out after the kingdom executed dissident Saudi Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr, a driving force behind anti-government protests.Nimr was one of four Shiites put to death on January 2 alongside 43 Sunnis. All were convicted of terrorism.Jubeir told reporters that he did not see a coming together of the US and Iran.Overall I think the United States is very aware of the danger of Irans mischief and nefarious activities... I dont believe the United States is under any illusion as to what type of government Iran is, Jubeir added, while Kerry appeared defensive and less at ease than usual.A senior State Department official earlier told journalists the US understands Saudi anger over the embassy attack but that lessening tensions is an important objective.Irans supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday said violence against the Saudi embassy was wrong, and against Islam.

Barca win the mark of champions - Luis Enrique

Posted:

MADRID: (AFP) - Barcelona boss Luis Enrique hailed his sides 2-1 win at Malaga as a huge boost for their La Liga title hopes despite admitting he cant remember a poorer first-half display from the European champions.Munir El Haddadi got the visitors off to the perfect start with the opening goal after 64 seconds, but Barca were throughly outplayed in the remainder of the first period and were lucky to only concede Juanpis equaliser 13 minutes before the break. However, five-time world player of the year Lionel Messi provided the inspiration for Enriques men just after the restart with a stunning volley to move them a point clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of the table. To win playing at not our normal level and at a difficult place to come reinforces us and gives us confidence to continue with our objectives, said Enrique.I am left with the clear improvement of the team in the second-half and the desire the team has to get results. They say it is one of the most important characteristics of the big teams: to win when you play badly. When you play well practically everything is easy, but when you play badly and have to overcome difficulty, especially at a place like this where it is always difficult for us, it has more value.Barca were without the injured Neymar and suspended Gerard Pique, but even accounting for their influence, Enrique was at a loss to explain such a poor first-half display after a perfect start.Something which in theory is very positive (the early goal) turned into a nightmare, he added. We were inferior to Malaga in the first-half. They made a lot of chances from our imprecision. It is difficult to remember such a bad first-half on our part. There are many factors which can influence things in football. The players are not machines and they can have a day when things go wrong. Today it was a general problem with the whole team.In the second-half I think we competed better, we moved the ball better, but even then we made more mistakes than usual.Victory takes Barca at least temporarily top of the table with Atletico hosting Sevilla on Sunday ahead of the meeting between the top two next weekend. It was also the first time Barca had won away from home in La Liga since November and captain Andres Iniesta underlined the importance of the three points no matter the performance. That is La Liga. It is very difficult to win away from home, but we are very happy because it was a very important game for us, he said.Picking up three points allows us to keep ourselves at the top of the table.

Five terrorists involved in university attack arrested

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Pakistani security agencies have arrested five men accused of helping organise Wednesdays attack on a university in the countrys troubled northwest that killed 21 people, the military announced on Saturday. The assault on Bacha Khan University campus in Charsadda by four armed assailants was later claimed by a faction of the Pakistani Taliban and bore a chilling resemblance to a December 2014 massacre at a school in Peshawar that killed more than 150 people, mostly children. The five facilitators have been arrested and the another one, whom I will call terrorist-A is still at large, military spokesman Lieutenant General Asim Bajwa told a televised press conference in Peshawar on Saturday.According to the officer, terrorist-A arranged transportation for the four gunmen who travelled from Torkhum town, which borders Afghanistan. The suspects also secured accommodation for the assailants and provided them with a rickshaw that they used on the day of the attack. They also helped purchase their weapons in the countrys tribal belt and relied on women close to the accused to help smuggle guns.Women wearing traditional veils do not usually undergo a routine body search at the checkpoints, said Bajwa. He went on to confirm that authorities suspect the assault on the university was planned and directed by militant groups residing in Afghanistan, adding that one of the organisers had made as many as 10 calls to the attackers on a mobile phone that had an Afghan SIM card.On Friday, the Taliban faction behind the massacre at Bacha Khan university posted a video message vowing to target schools throughout the country, calling them nurseries for people who challenge Allahs law.The military intensified an ongoing offensive against extremists in Pakistans tribal areas after attack on the Peshawar school in 2014. The government also launched a National Action Plan cracking down on extremism.Security improved in 2015 -- but critics have repeatedly warned the government is not taking long-term steps to tackle the underlying causes of extremism.
