21 killed in wave of Baghdad attacks

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Attacks across Baghdad, including car bombs at an up-scale shopping mall and near a juvenile detention centre, killed 21 people Saturday as rising violence fuels fears of all-out sectarian war.The bombings and a deadly, weeks-long standoff in the western province of Anbar, part of a nationwide surge in violence that has already killed more than 600 this month, come just months ahead of parliamentary elections.Diplomats including UN chief Ban Ki-moon have urged authorities to pursue political reconciliation with disaffected Sunni Arabs to resolve the unrest, but the US has said it will provide training for Iraqi forces in a third country and ship small arms to the country's security forces.Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has taken a hard line and ruled out dialogue with militants.Iraqi officials have instead trumpeted wide-ranging security operations against militants, including in the desert region of Anbar, which borders Syria, but they appear to have done little to abate daily bloodshed. In Baghdad on Saturday evening, seven attacks -- including six car bombs -- killed at least 21 people and wounded more than 60 others, security and medical officials said. One of the blasts went off near the glitzy new Mansur Mall, one of the capital's most up-scale shopping centres, where families and young people often meet in the evenings to go to the cinema or eat at Western-style restaurants. At least five people were killed and 12 more were wounded. The area was deserted after the attack as shoppers rushed out of the mall, while security forces imposed restrictions on movement in the area, barring cars from entering or leaving the district, AFP journalists at the scene said.Another car bomb in the Taubchi neighbourhood detonated near a juvenile detention centre, and conflicting reports of a prison break spurred authorities to effectively shut the area down, an AFP journalist said. The blast killed five people and left 13 others wounded, officials said.An interior ministry official said 23 detainees managed to escape in the chaotic aftermath of the attack, but Iraqiya state TV said security forces managed to prevent the attempted jailbreak.Bombs also went off near a bus station in Nahda, a bridge in Utaifiyah, while attacks struck the neighbourhoods of Amriyah, Jamiyah and Adel, killing 11 people in all.

Egypt approves constitution by 98% as Sisi eyes presidency

Posted:

CAIRO (AFP) - Egyptian voters have approved a new constitution by 98.1 percent, the elections chief said Saturday, in what the government declared a popular endorsement of the army's overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. The result of the Tuesday-Wednesday vote had never been in doubt, as Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists boycotted it, but the authorities wanted a large turnout in the first democratic test since the ouster in July.Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the general who led the overthrow, had been monitoring the outcome for an indication of support for a possible presidential bid, military officials said.Electoral commission head Nabil Salib said turnout reached 38.6 percent of 53 million registered voters, with only 1.9 percent voting no.That turnout proved that the revolution of June 30 was a popular revolution, a senior government official said at a news conference to announce the results. It refuted the doubts of naysayers, said Salah el-Din Abdel Sadeq, head of the government's media arm.The new charter replaces an Islamist-inspired one adopted in a December 2012 referendum under Morsi with about two-thirds of the vote and a 33 percent turnout. The United States, a major source of financial aid most of which is military funding, reacted to the news by urging Egyptian authorities to fully implement the rights guaranteed under the constitution. It's not one vote that determines a democracy. It's what comes next that will shape Egypt's political, economic and social framework for generations, said US Secretary of State John Kerry. As Egypt's transition proceeds, the United States urges the interim Egyptian government to fully implement those rights and freedoms that are guaranteed in the new constitution for the benefit of the Egyptian people, and to take steps towards reconciliation, he said. The US administration on Thursday said it was closely watching the results of Egypt's referendum, but had not yet decided whether to unfreeze some $1.5 billion (1.1 billion euros) in aid.The military removed Morsi days after millions of protesters began rallying against him on June 30, setting off months of unrest by his followers who decried what they called a coup.Presidential and parliamentary elections have been promised for later this year.

Syria opposition to join peace talks to oust Assad

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Syrias deeply divided opposition finally agreed Saturday to join an international peace conference, saying it wanted to remove President Bashar al-Assad from power, a day after Damascus offered concessions. The deeply divided National Coalition had been under intense international pressure to attend the conference, which aims to find a way out of the brutal conflict that has killed 130,000 people and made millions homeless since March 2011.Damascus had already said it will attend, although US Secretary of State John Kerry has accused the regime of diversionary tactics, saying nobody is going to be fooled. The exiled Coalition voted by 58 votes to 14 with two abstentions and one blank vote at a meeting in Istanbul to attend the so-called Geneva II talks, which open Wednesday. That meant just 75 of the around 120 opposition delegates took part in the secret ballot, in a sign that strong disagreements persist.Leader Ahmad Jarba said the umbrella group would be there with the sole aim of removing Assad from power. The Geneva II negotiation table is a one-way road aimed at achieving all the demands of the revolution... and first and foremost stripping the butcher (Assad) of all his powers, he said.Western powers welcomed the opposition decision, which Kerry said was in the interests of all the Syrian people who have suffered so horribly under the brutality of the (Bashar-al-) Assad regime.British Foreign Secretary William Hague praised the opposition for reaching what he called a difficult decision.German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the decision provided a small glimmer of hope for Syrias people and his French counterpart Laurent Fabius called it a courageous choice.More than 35 countries will gather in the Swiss cities of Montreux and Geneva from Wednesday for talks on setting up a transitional government to lead the country, in line with a 2012 deal. The Coalition, a grouping of myriad organisations, has long struggled to put forward a united front during the civil war, rocked by infighting over its leadership and efforts to form a government in exile. Many members had been appalled at the idea of sitting down at the same table with representatives of the hated regime they have been trying to unseat for almost three years. In a surprise move in Moscow on Friday, Syrias Foreign Minister Walid Muallem presented his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov with a security plan aimed at halting all military actions in the devastated northern city of Aleppo.Muallem also said the regime was willing to swap prisoners with the rebels in the first such mass exchange since the conflict erupted, while Lavrov said Damascus was ready to take a series of humanitarian steps to improve the delivery of aid.And on Saturday, food aid entered the besieged Yarmuk Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus -- where dozens of people are reported to have died of hunger and lack of medical care -- for the first time in four months.Syria, Muallem said, would make every effort to ensure Geneva II is a success and meets the aspirations of the Syrian people and the direct orders of President Bashar al-Assad.But Kerry warned the regime it could not divert the peace talks away from the aim of installing a new government, after a letter from Muallem to the UN said Geneva was about getting rid of extremists in Syria.

Nadal blasts past Monfils into fourth round

MELBOURNE (AFP) - World number one Rafael Nadal powered past Frenchman Gael Monfils to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open in an impressive performance on Saturday. The 13-time Grand Slam champion was too strong for the 25th-seeded Monfils, winning 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 in just over two hours on Rod Laver Arena.Nadal will next face Japanese 16th seed Kei Nishikori in the fourth round. Nishikori earlier knocked out American Donald Young in straight sets. The Spanish top seed is bidding to win his second Australian Open title and become only the third man to win each of the four Grand Slam titles twice, after Australians Roy Emerson and Rod Laver. No one is unstoppable. Tonight I think I played a great match, Nadal said. I'm very happy with the way that I played against a very tough opponent like Gael.So that makes the level that I played tonight better because was against tough opponent. A good player like Gael is always very difficult to play against.(But it's) just one very good day. That makes me feel confident, but I am in fourth round. That's all.Nadal played his best match in the tournament and was relentless in breaking the flashy Frenchman's service six times in a dynamic display. The Spaniard hit 21 winners and just 18 unforced errors, while Monfils made 57 unforced errors with his all-or-nothing shot-making.It was Nadal's 10th win in 12 encounters with Monfils to put him into the second week of the tournament. There was some concern early in the second set when Nadal was limping on his right foot after winning a rally, but he continued on in the match with no apparent discomfort.Nadal is looking to win his 14th Grand Slam title and equal American Pete Sampras on the list of all-time Grand Slam title holders. He is currently third behind Roger Federer (17).

Arsenal stay top, technology aids City surge

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal preserved their lead in the Premier League by beating Fulham 2-0 on Saturday, while goal-line technology assisted Manchester City as they overcame Cardiff City.Arsenal knew that anything less than victory might allow City to gazump them, but it was not until Santi Cazorla claimed a quick-fire brace mid-way through the second half that they put paid to Fulham at the Emirates Stadium.Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg had frustrated Arsenal in the first half, but he was beaten in the 57th minute when Cazorla slid a shot past him after a neat interchange involving Olivier Giroud and Jack Wilshere. The Spanish midfielder added a second five minutes later, collecting the ball on the edge of the box after Nacho Monreal's cross was partially cleared and drilling a low shot into the bottom-right corner. The players were conscious we had to step up a gear, said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. It was just a question of time and Santi Cazorla delivered two special goals.City remain a point behind Arsenal after sinking Cardiff 4-2 on a day of milestones at the Etihad Stadium.Edin Dzeko broke the deadlock in the 14th minute with a goal that was City's 100th of the season and appeared to represent the first time that goal-line technology has been decisively used to award a goal in the Premier League. The Bosnian striker's miscued effort from David Silva's pass was hacked away from beneath the crossbar by Aron Gunnarsson, but Hawkeye replays shown on the stadium's video screens confirmed that the ball had just crossed the line.Craig Noone equalised in the 29th minute after exploiting slack defending from Martin Demichelis and Vincent Kompany, but Jesus Navas restored the hosts' lead four minutes later with a measured finish.Yaya Toure added a third goal in the 76th minute after a one-two with Sergio Aguero, who got on the score-sheet himself three minutes later to claim his first league goal since returning from a calf injury.Fraizer Campbell pulled a goal back late on for Cardiff.Maybe I am not 100 percent happy because we conceded the second goal in the last minute, said City manager Manuel Pellegrini. But we scored four and missed five or six clear chances, so if we continue to play like we are, we are always going to score more than we concede.Liverpool fought back from two goals down to record a 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa, but squandered an opportunity to close on third-place Chelsea, who host Manchester United on Sunday.Surprise victors at Anfield last season, Villa opened up a 2-0 lead inside 36 minutes after Andreas Weimann tapped in Gabriel Agbonlahor's cross and Christian Benteke exploited an error by Simon Mignolet to head home. However, Daniel Sturridge equalised in first-half injury time, stabbing home from Jordan Henderson's flick, before Steven Gerrard equalised with a 53rd-minute penalty after Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan felled Luis Suarez. The draw left Liverpool eight points behind Arsenal and three points shy of Chelsea, while they are also at risk of being overtaken by city rivals Everton, who visit West Bromwich Albion on Monday.Southampton were denied a morale-boosting victory after Sunderland also hit back from 2-0 down to record a 2-2 draw in an engaging encounter at the Stadium of Light.Despite being rocked by the resignation of chairman Nicola Cortese on Wednesday, Southampton took control through Jay Rodriguez and Dejan Lovren, only for Fabio Borini and Adam Johnson to earn Sunderland a point.Yohan Cabaye scored twice as Newcastle United bolstered their challenge for European qualification with a 3-1 success at West Ham United, who slipped into the bottom three.Jason Puncheon catapulted Crystal Palace out of the relegation zone after atoning for a woeful penalty miss at Tottenham Hotspur last weekend by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Stoke City.Elsewhere, Ryan Bennett scored in the 87th-minute to give Norwich City a precious 1-0 win at home to Hull City, who had Tom Huddlestone sent off for two bookable offences.

Field Hockey: Netherlands win inaugural World League

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Constantijn Jonker scored a hat-trick as the Netherlands thumped New Zealand 7-2 to win the inaugural Hockey World League in New Delhi on Saturday. The Dutch, who stunned reigning world champions Australia in the semi-finals, outplayed the Black Sticks in a one-sided final at the Dhyan Chand Stadium in the Indian capital. Two goals from Jonker and one from Billy Bakker helped the Netherlands race to a 3-0 lead by half-time, before Bob de Voogd struck the fourth goal soon after the resumption.Steve Edwards reduced the margin for New Zealand in the 37th minute, but the Dutch continued their scoring spree as Rogier Hofman netted the fifth goal in the 45th.New Zealand, who upset England in the semi-finals via a penalty shoot-out, raided the Dutch defence and were rewarded with a second goal from Edwards in the 52nd minute. The Netherlands, who host the World Cup at the Hague in May and June, sealed their emphatic win with further goals from Bakker and Jonker.A 7-2 scoreline in a final is so satisfying, said man-of-the-match Jonker. This was a good competition against strong teams and will help us prepare for the World Cup.The International Hockey Federation's (FIH) newest competition opened with 54 teams in August 2012, and, after three rounds played around the world, the top seven joined hosts India for the title round in New Delhi.England took third place with a 2-1 win over Australia earlier on Saturday.Belgium finished fifth after beating India 2-1, while Olympic champions Germany ended in seventh place after a 2-1 win against Argentina. The FIH named German midfielder Tobias Hauke as the player of the year for 2013.

Rallying: Nani Roma wins Dakar title

Posted:

VALPARASO (AFP) - Spanish driver Nani Roma won the Dakar Rally on Saturday, 10 years after he clinched the motorcycle title in the gruelling event.Roma, 42, overturned a 26-second overnight deficit on his Mini teammate and 11-time champion Stephane Peterhansel to take victory.South Africa's Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) won the stage, the 13th and final one of the race over 157km from La Serena to Valparaiso, with Roma in fourth place behind fellow Mini drivers Krzysztof Holowczyc and Vladimir Vasilyev.Roma becomes just the third man to win the Dakar title on two and four wheels after Peterhansel and Hubert Auriol. His win came after a controversial two days when Mini insisted on team orders which would have seen Roma, Peterhansel and 2011 champion Nasser Al-Attiyah complete a podium lockout for the manufacturers. But Friday saw Roma suffer a puncture, allowing Peterhansel to retake the overall lead.It was unclear in the immediate aftermath of Saturday's conclusion whether or not the Mini drivers had received new instructions.Peterhansel, six times a champion on two wheels and five times on four, was 13th on Saturday and took second place overall, 5min 38sec behind his teammate.Al-Attiyah, meanwhile, was left to rue the one-hour penalty he collected for missing waypoints on the 10th stage as he finished 56min 52sec behind Roma and in third overall in another Mini.I always had it in my head that I wanted to win in a car after winning the motorcycles, said Roma, whose wife also took part in the race competing in the motorcycle event.I don't know if this is the greatest stress I have experienced, but it was very tough, said Roma. The second week, with hard, long stages wasn't easy. But 10 years after winning on a motorcycle also on January 18, I have won in the cars. It's a dream come true.Spain's Marc Coma, riding for the KTM team, won the motorcycle title for the fourth time. The Dakar specialist avoided any last day misfortune to add the 2014 title to his successes in 2006, 2009 and 2011.Coma, who had a near two hour lead over the chasing pack going into the final day, came in 18th.This represents a lot of sacrifices, said 37-year-old Coma. It was an extreme course with some good moments and some hard times.Every time I have won this rally, I have said I will savour the moment as I don't know if I am going to win again.Spain's Jordi Viladoms was second overall in a KTM.I'm overwhelmed, he said. It's a big thing for me, especially after the year I went through. I'm over the moon with this result.France's defending champion Cyril Despres had won the stage on a Yamaha but he was later penalised five minutes which dropped him to fifth on the day.Spain's Joan Barreda, on a Honda, was promoted from second to first on the stage. The 36th edition of the Dakar Rally, which crossed Argentina, Bolivia as well as Chile, proved one of the toughest with temperatures soaring to 47 degrees at one stage. It also witnessed the death of one competitor -- Belgian motorcyclist Eric Palante on the fifth stage between Chilecito and Tucuman -- as well as two Argentine reporters. The Dakar Rally also proved a hit with fans as Argentine police estimated around one million spectators watched the race get underway at Rosario, the birthplace of Che Guevara and Lionel Messi.

Jordan replaces Finn in England T20 squad

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Sussex seamer Chris Jordan was called into England's Twenty20 squad to play Australia on Saturday following the early exit of Steven Finn.Jordan is already in Australia with the one-day international squad where he has shown signs of promise despite England going 2-0 down in the five-match series.Middlesex quick Finn was the only member of England's originally selected Ashes squad who didn't play an international match on a tour where his side were routed 5-0 by Australia in the Test series. He returned home early in a bid to iron out problems with his bowling action which England limited overs coach Ashley Giles said had made him not selectable.Jordan's call-up for Twenty20 duty was confirmed by an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) statement which said: Sussex pace bowler Chris Jordan has been called into England's Twenty20 squad for the three-match series against Australia beginning in Hobart on January 29.Finn's problems mean he is unlikely to make it into England's squad for the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh in March, even though he was named this week in the provisional 30-man party.Jordan, yet to play a Twenty20 international, was also selected in that provisional squad but will now have a chance to show what he can do in cricket's shortest format. The 25-year-old Barbados-born paceman had been due to join the England Lions squad in Sri Lanka but his place in the national A side's tour party has been taken by Yorkshire's Liam Plunkett.England's one-day series against Australia continues in Sydney on Sydney. After the ODIs, Australia and England play three Twenty20 internationals, with matches in Hobart (January 29), Melbourne (January 31) and Sydney's Olympic Stadium (February 2).

India's top ranking on line in New Zealand showdown

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AFP) - India put their top spot in the world one-day international rankings on the line in a five-match series starting in Napier Sunday against a New Zealand side fired up by new-found self-belief.Although New Zealand lie a lowly eighth on the world ladder, the way they cleaned up their series against the West Indies was a confidence booster for a team with a history of not being able to close out a winning situation. It was good to wrap it up and take a big step for this team, captain Brendon McCullum said after New Zealand beat the West Indies 2-0 in the Twenty20s to go with their 2-0 win in the Tests and two-all drawn ODI series. We talked all week about wanting to close out a series and the way we did it was excellent. For India to retain their number one ranking they only have to win the series, but a New Zealand win could catapult Australia to the top depending on the outcome of their current series against England. The difference in status between India and New Zealand was evident when they wrapped up practice. As befitting the global rock stars of cricket, the Indian bags were placed on a trailer and taken to their bus while the lowly-ranked New Zealanders carried their own bags away from the nets. But, despite the huge difference in rankings between the two sides, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni declares he is not taking New Zealand lightly.Especially at home, they'll know the conditions better than us and for some who have not played here it will be a challenge. Although New Zealand have a clutch of quality bowlers, including key wicket takers Mitch McClenaghan and Nathan McCullum and rising speedster Adam Milne who tops 150 kilometres per hour (93 mph), India have a batting depth. Virat Kohli, Dhoni and Shikhar Dhawan are ranked among the top 10 ODI batsmen and are quick-scoring, near faultless craftsmen. The 25-year-old Kohli can be a match-winner on his own with an average of 51.54 from his 125 ODIs which include 17 centuries. Dhoni averages 52.88 and Dhawan a more modest 43.96.New Zealand's top batsman, Ross Taylor, averages 38.21 and is ranked down in 16th place. But where New Zealand fancy their chances is batting against bowlers unused to the vagaries of overseas conditions. This was evident in India's most recent ODIs against South Africa where they lost the first game by 141 runs and the second by 134, figures which New Zealand duly noted. The beauty of the New Zealand team at the moment is we're up for the fight and we're keen to be in the mix of a challenge, Nathan McCullum said. The McLean Park pitch for the opening match has a reputation for being batter friendly and favouring the side batting last.
