Tennis: Li powers into Australia Open semis

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - World number four Li Na swept aside Italian Flavia Pennetta in a one-sided, straight-sets demolition to move into the Australian Open semi-finals on Tuesday. The Chinese trailblazer was in dominant form as she crushed the 28th seed 6-2, 6-2 to set up a last-four clash with either Serbias Ana Ivonovic or up-and-coming Canadian teen Eugenie Bouchard.Li is starting to peak at the right time, with the 67-minute mauling of Pennetta coming after she smashed Ekaterina Makarova in less than an hour on Sunday. It followed a verbal volley by coach Carlos Rodriguez after her third-round endeavour, where she was taken to three sets and saved a match point against Lucie Safarova. After I saved match point (against Safarova) I have got better, I got a lot of confidence from that and I believe in myself, said Li.I feel good, I always play well here and I hope I can take one more step this year. The two-time Melbourne finalist and 2011 French Open winner, who came into the tournament on the back of winning the Shenzhen Open, was in a different class to the Italian, who at 31 is one day older than the Chinese player. It was Pennettas first quarter-final at Melbourne Park since making her tournament debut in 2003, and she appeared overawed by the occasion. In contrast, the composed Li has been a consistently good performer on the Plexicushion courts over the past five years. She has made the final twice, losing to Kim Clijsters in 2011 and then last year to Victoria Azarenka after dramatically twice rolling her ankle and briefly blacking out.A blistering cross-court forehand gave Li a break point opportunity on Pennettas opening serve on Rod Laver Arena, and a powerful backhand down the line sealed the game to give the Chinese star an early advantage. The Italian should have pulled level in the next game, creating three break points, but she failed to convert any of them as Li held on.It cost Pennetta dearly as the Chinese cranked up the pressure to go 3-0 in front, when a looping forehand from the 28th seed fell just outside the baseline.Lis first serve was far more potent than Pennettas and she raced to a 4-0 lead with her first ace of the match.Pennetta was in trouble and losing confidence, with only 40 percent of her first serves going in, and a double-fault on break point compounded her problems as Li strengthened her grip at 5-0.She managed to claw back a game on the Li serve and then held to give the set a more respectable look, but it only delayed the inevitable as Li served out for the set.The flustered Pennetta then lost her opening service game on another double-fault, with the Italian kicking the ball away in disgust. With the winning line in sight, Li easily held serve then broke again when Pennetta smacked a backhand into the net.Li was on fire and she went 4-0 in front. Pennetta then saved two break points to stay alive before the Chinese number one wrapped it up.Despite the defeat Pennetta, who missed last years tournament after being sidelined for six months with a right wrist injury that needed surgery, is projected to return to the top 20 after the tournament.

Ban boots Iran out of Syria peace talks

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN leader Ban Ki-moon on Monday abruptly excluded Iran from this week's Syria peace conference after it refused to back calls for a transitional government to end the country's war.Ban withdrew a surprise invitation to Iran less than 24 hours after it had been made, bidding to save the talks which start in the Swiss town of Montreux on Wednesday. The UN secretary general was forced to act after the Syrian opposition threatened to withdraw from the talks if Iran takes part. The United States also demanded the invitation be withdrawn if Iran did not support a Syria declaration adopted by major world powers in Geneva in 2012.Iran is a major backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who reaffirmed that he would not stand down in an interview with AFP published Monday. The Geneva declaration had called for a transitional government to guide the country out of the three year war which the United Nations says has left well over 100,000 dead. The UN leader said Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif had repeatedly assured him that he understood and supported the aim of the peace conference to set up an interim government. The secretary general is deeply disappointed by Iranian public statements today that are not at all consistent with that stated commitment, said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky. He continues to urge Iran to join the global consensus behind the Geneva communique.Given that it has chosen to remain outside that basic understanding, he has decided that the one-day Montreux gathering will proceed without Iran's participation, Nesirky added.Ban was dismayed by the storm growing around the peace conference, the most intense diplomatic bid yet to end the near three-year war.UN officials said Zarif had apparently promised Ban a statement accepting the Geneva communique would be made. But just before the UN announcement, Iran's envoy to the United Nations, Mohammad Khazaee, reaffirmed his government's rejection of conditions for attending this week's meeting.Iran has always been supportive of finding a political solution for this crisis, Khazaee said in a statement. If the participation of Iran is conditioned to accept Geneva I communique, Iran will not participate in Geneva II, he added.Ban had contacts with the US and Russian foreign ministers before excluding Iran again. The Syrian National Coalition, the main opposition, welcomed Ban's about turn and said it would be in Switzerland this week.Although the talks start in Montreux on Wednesday, the Syrian government and opposition will start talks in Geneva on Friday. The conference still faces major obstacles which were highlighted by new attacks spilling over into Syria's neighbors and Assad's refusal to consider standing down -- a key demand of the Syrian opposition.

Kerry approves Iran sanctions relief: US

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday approved a waiver to ease sanctions on Iran, after the Islamic republic began to impose curbs on its suspect nuclear program.Iran has begun to take concrete and verifiable steps to halt its nuclear program, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, adding it was an unprecedented opportunity to resolve global concerns over the atomic program.Kerry has approved the waiver, which will allow limited relief to help Irans crippled economy, and it would be sent to Congress on Monday, she added. As agreed with world powers under a six-month deal reached on November 24, the US administration has taken the necessary steps to pause efforts to further reduce Iranian crude oil exports, a separate US fact sheet said. This will allow the six nations that buy Iranian oil to continue to do so for the duration of the deal.Sanctions will also be suspended on non-Americans trading in Irans petrochemical exports, as well as certain trade in gold and precious metals and Irans automotive sector.White House spokesman Jay Carney hailed Irans actions as an important step forward. These actions represent the first time in nearly a decade that Iran has verifiably enacted measures to halt progress on its nuclear program, and roll it back in key respects, he said in a statement.Iran has also begun to provide the IAEA with increased transparency into the Iranian nuclear program, through more frequent and intrusive inspections and the expanded provision of information to the IAEA.But senior US administration officials argued that the sanctions easing offered from Monday was modest financial relief.I would underscore that it does not mean that Iran is open for business. Quite on the contrary, the overwhelming majority of our sanctions, and the basic structure of oil and banking sanctions remain in place, a senior administration official said on a conference call. The administration is committed to aggressively enforcing those sanctions, he said.Psaki warned too that the coming negotiation to reach a comprehensive agreement that addresses all of the international communitys concerns will be even more complex, and we go into it clear-eyed about the difficulties ahead. But todays events have made clear that we have an unprecedented opportunity to see if we can resolve this most pressing national security concern peacefully. That remains our goal, and that is our challenge ahead.

Car bombs on Syria-Turkey border post kill 16: monitor

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - A double suicide car bombing at the Bab al-Hawa border post between Syria and Turkey on Monday killed at least 16 people, including six rebels, a monitoring group said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, updating an earlier toll, said 20 people were wounded as one car detonated at a checkpoint just outside the crossing and another inside the post. The border crossing in Idlib province of northwest Syria is held by Islamist and moderate rebels who have been locked in fierce fighting with jihadists from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in recent weeks.ISIL fighters on Monday took control of the Jarrah military airport in the northern province of Aleppo that had been in rebel hands since February 2013.Islamist and moderate rebels angered by ISILs alleged abuses have forced them from Aleppo city but the group has managed to strengthen its grip on the town of Raqa, also in northern Syria. On Monday, ISIL imposed a Taliban-style ban on music and smoking in Raqa, declaring them un-Islamic.In a statement it said it would ban the sale of music CDs, music players, and playing songs in cars and buses and in shops and all places. The group added it had taken the step because musical instruments and singing are proscribed in Islam because they distract from remembering God and the Koran.n a second statement, ISIL said as part of efforts to apply sharia (Islamic) law... it is completely forbidden to sell cigarettes or water pipes in any place.Such bans are reminiscent of those the Taliban imposed on television, cinema and music in Afghanistan when in power up until 2001.ISIL has alienated activists and other opposition fighters in Syria, who accuse it of imposing a reign of terror on areas where it operates. Its actions provoked a backlash from powerful rebel groups in early January, and the group is now fighting opposition forces in several parts of northern Syria. The Observatory said Monday that ISIL fighters withdrew after midnight yesterday (Sunday) from the western Aleppo countryside and evacuated their positions. The Britain-based Observatory also reported heavy clashes between jihadists and rebels on the outskirts of the town of Azaz in Aleppo province, near the border with Turkey.Rebel groups in the town shelled areas where ISIL fighters were with mortar rounds, the Observatory said.Meanwhile regime troops pressed operations across Syria. The Observatory, which relies on a network of activists and doctors on the ground for its reports, said government air raids on Sunday had killed at least 44 people, including 16 children, across Aleppo province, and in the southern province of Daraa.Further air raids on Monday killed another five people in Daraa, the Observatory added.

India minister's wife died of drug overdose: report

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - The wife of Indian minister Shahshi Tharoor, found dead in a luxury hotel after accusing her husband of being unfaithful, appeared to have died of drug overdose, news agency Press Trust of India said Monday.Tharoor, 57, the junior human resources development minister, found his wife Sunanda Pushkar dead on Friday in her five-star hotel room in New Delhi after he returned from a Congress party meeting. An autopsy report, which was submitted on Monday to a magistrate charged with investigating her death, cited a drug overdose as the cause of death, PTI reported.According to PTI, Magistrate Alok Sharma refused to elaborate the details of the report, saying he would study it along with recorded statements of others, including that of Tharoor. On this basis I will conclude what was the cause of death and submit a report to the police whether a case is made out or not surrounding the death and whether police should carry out further investigation or not, Sharma was quoted as saying by PTI.Tharoor recorded his statement on Sunday, hours after he pledged full cooperation with investigations and urged a speedy inquiry into his wifes death, which came after she exposed his alleged affair on Twitter with a Pakistani journalist, Mehr Tarar. The death was a tragic twist in a tale of apparent marital strife that has played out in full view of the publics gaze, both in Indias newspapers and on social media.Sunanda Pushkar, 52, died an unnatural, sudden death, said doctors who performed an autopsy on Saturday, adding that more tests were needed to determine the exact cause.Pushkars body had some physical injuries, but it was unclear whether they were related to her death, Sudhir Gupta, one of three doctors who performed the autopsy, had said. Her body was cremated according to Hindu rites on the weekend.Accusations of an affair first surfaced on Wednesday when unusual messages appeared on the Twitter account of the thrice-married Tharoor, who is also a novelist, a government spokesman and a prolific tweeter. They showed private exchanges purportedly between the minister (@shashitharoor) and Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar (@mehrtarar), in which she professed her love for him and he said his wife had discovered their relationship.Tharoor quickly responded by saying his Twitter account had been hacked, but Pushkar told two newspapers that she was the author of the messages.Tarar strongly denied having an affair with the former high-flying UN diplomat.Seeking to draw a line under the Twitter row, Tharoor issued a statement Thursday in which he blamed unauthorised tweets and distorted media reports for the unseemly controversy. The statement said the couple were happily married.

LISBON (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo was on Monday awarded one of the most prestigious honours in Portugal from the countrys President Anibal Cavaco Silva. The Portugal captain and Real Madrid forward was awarded the Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique, the Order of Prince Henry, in the presidential palace in Lisbon.Silva paid tribute to the extraordinary talent of Ronaldo ... who brings prestige to Portugal around the world. He congratulated Ronaldo for his talent, discipline and the determination he has always shown ... an example for young generations. The 28-year-old received an honour that was created in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of one of the most important figures in the Portuguese Empire. The ceremony took place at the presidential palace in Belem, just outside Lisbon, a week after Ronaldo won the Ballon dOr title for the second time, and the worlds top footballer brought his new trophy with him.The trophy will now go on display in the museum opened last December in Madeira, the Portuguese island from where Ronaldo comes. It gives me great pride to represent Portugal in the world, said Ronaldo. This distinction is a source of additional motivation to continue to work harder and represent Portugal at the highest level.Silva had intended to award the honour to CR7 on January 7 but the cememony was pushed back following the death of Portuguese football legend Eusebio.Ronaldo, who also own the Ballon dor in 2008, is the first Portuguese player to receive the award twice. Oil prices drop on China data

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Oil prices fell on Monday as China's economic growth data fuelled concerns over energy demand in the world's second largest economy, traders said.New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in February, dropped 67 cents to $93.70 a barrel.Brent North Sea crude for March slipped 20 cents to stand at $106.28 a barrel in London afternoon deals.China's economy last year registered flat growth of 7.7 percent, maintaining its slowest expansion in more than a decade as the government warned Monday of deep-rooted problems including a mountain of local authority debt. The 2013 GDP figure was the same as that for 2012 -- which was the worst rate of growth since 1999 -- and matched the median forecast in a survey of 14 economists by AFP. It exceeded the government's growth target for the year, which was declared as 7.5 percent.Kenny Kan, analyst at traders CMC Markets, said the Chinese data painted a dimmer picture for the energy sector.French lender Credit Agricole said the slowdown in quarter-on-quarter growth was overstated due to lower number of working days than in the previous three months. China is the world's biggest energy-consuming nation and the health of its economy is closely watched by oil traders. Kan said oil prices were under pressure also over concerns about a oversupply in the United States. Ali Al Naimi, the oil minister of Saudi Arabia, said on Sunday that the OPEC cartel kingpin is unconcerned by a boom in US shale oil production. The kingdom welcomes this new source of energy that helps fulfill the growing world demand for energy, and helps stabilise oil markets, state news agency SPA quoted Naimi as saying. In October, oil production in the United States surpassed imports for the first time in nearly two decades, helped mainly by production from newly tapped shale-based reserves.CMC's Kan said trading was expected to remain thin for the rest of Monday as US markets are closed for a public holiday.

Misbah happy at coach Whatmore's winning farewell

Posted:

SHARJAH (AFP) - Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq showed delight in giving coach Dav Whatmore a happy farewell by winning the third and final Test against Sri Lanka in Sharjah on Monday.Pakistan clinched a thrilling five-wicket win in the third Test in fading light in Sharjah, chasing their second best target in all Tests of 302 with nine balls to spare. That levelled the three-match series at 1-1 and gave Whatmore a winning send-off.It was really a much wanted win, especially for Dav (Whatmore). We wanted to win it for him and level the series, said Misbah of the head coach whose two-year tenure ended after the match. The former Australian batsman, who coached Sri Lanka to World Cup glory in 1996, took over in March 2012.Under Whatmore, Pakistan failed to win a Test series, losing to South Africa (2013) and Sri Lanka (2012) and drawing the remaining three. But Misbah said his team enjoyed Whatmore's coaching. We really enjoyed being with him for all two years. We love you and we wish him all success (in future), said Misbah.Pakistan, set a five-plus run an over, owed their win to a brilliant 103 by Azhar Ali, Misbah's 68 not out and 48 by Sarfraz Ahmed. It's a great effort and all the players showed the will to win the game, so I am really happy about the youngsters, Ali's performance, Ahmed Shehzad's peformance in the first innings and Sarfraz performance, Mohammad Talha bowled really well so it's really pleasing points for Pakistan cricket, said Misbah, who is leading Pakistan since 2010.Sri Lanka were bowled out for 214 in their second innings, which gave Pakistan a chance to force a victory after losing the second Test in Dubai by nine wickets. The first Test ended in a draw in Abu Dhabi.Misbah said the intent was to go for a win. There was no pressuere, clear message was there when our innings started, we sat together and in the meeting we clearly decided we are going for it at any cost, whether it turned into 2-0 no problem, but we will try to do it 1-1, said Misbah.Misbah said it was one of the greatest victories. As a game this was one of my best victories, but still I think I rate our 3-0 victory against England higher, we white-washed the number one team, said Misbah of Pakistan's win over England in United Arab Emirates in 2012.But the match we won today, I guess we haven't won chasing like that so it's an amazing victory, said Misbah.Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews blamed poor batting in the second innings. We actually got only 214 and we couldn't step it up and we couldn't get a good lead, it wasn't a 214 runs pitch and that's where we lost the game, said Mathews, declared man-of-the-series for his 412 runs in three Tests. The defeat also deprived Sri Lanka of registering their first away series win in six years.Yes, it was a great opportunity that we haven't won a series away since 2008 (in Bangladesh) and we were 1-0 up in the series and sort of needed to bat more in the morning, we went wrong in our batting, said Mathews. But we can still take a lot of positives and move on to Bangladesh, said Mathews of his team's next tour where they play two Tests, three one-day and two Twenty20s, starting next week.

South Africa slams 'flawed' ICC plan

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Cricket South Africa (CSA) became the first major national governing body Monday to call on the International Cricket Council (ICC) to withdraw a draft plan that would give greater control of the world game to their counterparts in England, Australia and India.A position paper outlining the proposed changes is due to be discussed by the ICCs executive board next week. But, ahead of that meeting, CSA president Chris Nenzani published an open letter to ICC president Alan Isaac urging that the fundamentally flawed plan be taken off the table. One key proposal is for a four-man executive committee where the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Cricket Australia (CA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the three countries that bring most revenue into cricket, would all be guaranteed a place, with the other position selected by the trio annually. On the field, there is also a suggestion of the creation of two divisions for Test cricket but with England, Australia and India all safe from regelation for the top flight because of their commercial importance. The proposals need seven votes from the ICCs 10 leading nations to pass.According to smore forecasts South Africa, currently the worlds top-ranked Test side, could see their share of future revenue fall below that of Pakistan if the new set-up was adopted.South Africa, however, were the first of the other seven leading countries to speak out against the scheme, with Nenzani labelling it unconstitutional.Without addressing the merits of the proposal insofar as it concerns Constitutional amendments and changes to ICC competitions, these proposals should first be referred to the relevant ICC committees or sub-committees for proper consideration and to make recommendations to the ICC Board, his letter to New Zealand administrator Isaac said.Although there is nothing to prevent a review of the ICC funding model or finances, the proposal self-evidently is inextricably tied up with a fundamental restructuring of the ICC, which has far-reaching constitutional implications. The draft proposal is, therefore, fundamentally flawed as regards the process and, therefore, in breach of the ICC constitution. In the circumstances we propose that the draft proposal be withdrawn immediately given that the proper procedures have not been followed. In our respectful opinion, a more considered, inclusive/consultative, and properly constitutionally-ordained approach is required. But not all boards from amongst the seven were as scathing, with New Zealand Cricket director Martin Snedden saying of the BCCI-CA-ECB plan: Dont jump to the conclusion what theyre doing is not good for world cricket. The once close relationship between CSA and the BCCI appears to have declined markedly since former ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat took up a similar position with his home board in South Africa. While at the ICC, Lorgat promoted a report by Lord Harry Woolf, a senior English judge, which advocated putting the ICC under the control of independent directors. However, the report was shelved and Lorgat effectively forced out of the ICC, with the BCCI refusing to talk to him when India, in a late change of plan, announced a greatly reduced tour of South Africa last year.

Glamorgan bid to be new home of ICC

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - County side Glamorgan announced Monday theyd submitted a joint-bid with the Welsh Government and Cardiff City Council to provide a base for the headquarters of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from 2015.Recent reports have suggested next weeks ICC executive board meeting will consider a radical revamp of crickets global governing body, including moving its headquarters from Dubai, with Colombo and Singapore also said to be vying with Cardiff to become the new administrative home of the organisation. The ICC was based at Londons Lords ground before leaving for Dubai, primarily for tax purposes, in 2005 to end a 96-year association with the home of cricket.A statement from Glamorgan, the only Welsh team to play in Englands County Championship, said initial talks about the ICC moving to south Wales had started.Discussions are at a very early stage and ongoing, with Cardiff being only one of a number of possibilities being considered, it read.A Welsh Government spokesperson added: We have engaged in discussions on the matter but at this stage any details would remain commercial in confidence.Glamorgans Sophia Gardens ground in Cardiff, the Welsh capital, staged the opening Test of the 2009 Ashes series and was one of three venues for last years ICC Champions Trophy. The controversial ICC position paper also included plans for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Cricket Australia (CA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to become the three major decision makers in world cricket off the field, with their sides spared relegation from the top flight in a proposed new two division structure for Test cricket.

Johnson wins Allan Border Medal

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - England tormentor Mitchell Johnson capped a remarkable summer by shading Test and one-day captain Michael Clarke to win the Allan Border Medal for Australias player of the year on Monday. The fearsome paceman took 168 of the votes made by the media, players and umpires to beat Clarke by 12 with James Faulkner a distant third. It was the 32-year-olds first Allan Border Medal win -- judged on performances in Tests and one-dayers throughout the season -- and denied Clarke a record fifth triumph. It has been an amazing journey coming back from injury, having a lot of doubters out there, Johnson said. But I just knew in my own heart that if I had that opportunity that I could make the most of it.While Johnson missed the first Ashes series in England this year, he more than made up for it on home soil in Australias 5-0 whitewash of their old rivals, claiming 37 wickets at 13.97.Shane Watson came fourth with George Bailey and Steve Smith equal fifth.
