New talks on Iran nuclear deal open in Geneva

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - Iran and world powers met Thursday to discuss how to implement a landmark deal aimed at containing Tehrans nuclear drive, less than two weeks before the agreement is due to take effect.Iranian, EU and US negotiators gathered in Geneva for their highest-level talks since hammering out the groundbreaking November 24 deal.Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani also discussed the implementation of the accord in a phone conversation earlier in the day, according to the Kremlin.Rouhani warned, without elaboration, against seeking excuses that would create problems in the negotiation process, Irans ISNA news agency reported. He also called on certain countries ... to respect their own commitments (under the Geneva deal) and avoid new strictures that would shadow their goodwill.Negotiators have said they want to implement the deal, which aims to rein in Tehrans nuclear programme in exchange for some sanctions relief, by January 20.Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif voiced optimism ahead of the talks, but some observers warned of possible sticking points that could lead to a delay in rolling out the deal.Little information has filtered out about the Geneva talks, which were scheduled to continue Friday, but they were expected to focus heavily on the thorny issue of advanced centrifuges. The European Union, which represents the so-called P51 group of world powers -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany -- has kept a tight lid on details about when and where the discussions were taking place.Irans deputy chief nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi and Helga Schmid, deputy to EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, will discuss outstanding issues on implementing the deal, was all Ashtons spokesman Michael Mann would tell AFP.The US State Department said top US nuclear negotiator Wendy Sherman had met with both Araqchi and Schmid to provide views and information that was useful to discussions to address any remaining issues to the agreement to the joint plan of action.Iran and the US also held a bilateral meeting.Western powers and Israel fear Iran is seeking to develop the atomic bomb under the guise of a civilian nuclear programme but Tehran has always denied this.Under the November deal, Iran agreed to curb parts of its nuclear drive for six months in exchange for receiving modest relief from international sanctions and a promise by Western powers not to impose new measures against its hard-hit economy.Technical experts from both sides have since held several sessions in Geneva aimed at finetuning the deal.Zarif, also Irans top nuclear negotiator, said on Facebook Wednesday that the nuclear talks are continuing with seriousness and a strong political will. But some observers said a new generation of nuclear centrifuges, which could potentially enable Iran to rapidly purify uranium to a weapons-grade level, might become a sticking point.

Golf: Jacquelin leads from Oosthuizen in Durban

DURBAN (AFP) - Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin produced a bogey-free round of 67 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Volvo Golf Champions event in Durban, South Africa on Thursday.Despite windy conditions rendering shot-making difficult, Jacquelin enjoyed a flawless day with five birdies, including three at the last five holes. He leads by a stroke from home favourite and defending champion Louis Oosthuizen, who recovered from a bogey at the par-four first to shoot a 68.I managed to get everything right, said Jacquelin.A bogey-free round; thats the key, to go bogey-free every round on this course. Its a new year and pretty good way for me to start, so thats great.Veteran Northern Irishman Darren Clarke and talented young Frenchman Victor Dubuisson shot three-under-par rounds of 69, while Colin Montgomerie was among those who shot a 70.Montgomerie, who is the oldest player in the field at the age of 50, endured an up and down day, with six birdies and four bogeys, although he came within six inches of holing his tee shot at the short 15th hole.Meanwhile, Clarke, whose last win came at the 2011 Open at Royal St Georges, said he owed his fine round to a recent fitness regime which has seen him lose three stone (19kg) in weight. Its something, I took a look at myself in October and thought its time to make a change, he said.I am feeling strong. I reached (the 560-yard par-five) 10 today, whatever it was, hit it 300 off the tee into the wind and hit driver from 285 to 12 feet and I couldnt have reached there maybe five, six months ago. So hopefully it will pay off.

Orbital launches first cargo mission to space station

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Orbital Sciences Corporation on Thursday launched its unmanned Cygnus cargo ship on the companys first regular supply mission to the International Space Station. The liftoff of the Antares rocket carrying the ship took place at 1:07 pm (1807 GMT) from Wallops Island, Virginia, according to footage carried by the US space agency NASAs television network. It is a beautiful launch occurring on time... with perfect weather, a NASA commentator said. The cargo vehicle separated from the rockets second stage 10 minutes after the launch as planned.Cygnus is due to dock at the ISS on Sunday, only the fifth mooring of a private vessel to the station. The first was California company SpaceXs Dragon in May 2012.The Cygnus launch was initially planned for December but delayed after a cooling system breakdown on the ISS, which required American astronauts to make two spacewalks in order to replace an ammonia cooling pump. The launch is Orbitals second trip to the ISS, following a successful demonstration launch in September. That mission proved that the company can reliably carry out regularly scheduled operational missions to the ISS for NASA, said David Thompson, Orbitals chairman and chief executive officer.Orbital has a contract with NASA worth $1.9 billion for eight cargo resupply missions to the global space lab.Orbital and SpaceX are two private companies that have stepped in to ensure the United States ability to reach the orbiting outpost, after the retirement of the 30-year space shuttle program in 2011.Upon arrival at the ISS, Cygnus will be secured by the stations robotic arm, operated by two of the six astronauts based at the outpost. The ISS personnel -- three Russians, two Americans and one Japanese -- will then unload the Cygnus cargo, some 2,780 pounds (1,260 kilograms) of scientific equipment and supplies, as well as material from experiments looking at microbial resistance to antibiotics.Unlike the SpaceX Dragon capsule, Cygnus will not be sent back to Earth and instead will be destroyed upon falling into the Earths atmosphere.Under the terms of its contract with NASA, Orbital must deliver 20 tons of cargo to the ISS over the course of eight flights scheduled until early 2016.SpaceX meanwhile has already carried out three missions to the ISS with its Dragon capsule, part of a $1.6 billion deal with NASA which provides for 10 further flights to the outpost.SpaceX has launched Dragon with its Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida.SpaceX, Boeing and the Louisville-based Sierra Nevada firm have also been selected by NASA to develop a private vessel for transporting people to the ISS.NASA also uses Europes ATV vessel, Japans HTV and Russias Progress, which are destroyed in the atmosphere after their missions.

NY oil price hits 8-month low on generous supplies

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - New York oil prices hit an eight-month low Thursday on the back of high US crude and product stockpiles that suggest supplies continue to outpace demand.New York's main contract West Texas Intermediate for February delivery shed 67 cents to $91.66 per barrel, a level last seen on May 1.In London, Brent North Sea crude followed suit, losing 76 cents to $106.39 a barrel. The US Energy Information Administration reported Wednesday that while crude stockpiles fell modestly, they remained very high.Gasoline or petrol stocks rose by 6.2 million barrels, well above the 2.0 million consensus estimate of analysts. It just seems to be a hangover of yesterday's report, said Matt Smith of Schneider Electric on the price fall.Production is surging at a multi-decade high, and with the products not showing much strength.Bart Melek of TD Securities said crude fell due to anticipation of a lot of output of new production, in the US alone. More supply (is) coming out of the Middle East as well, he added.Oil prices are likely to face further downward pressure, with Libyan output up to 546,000 barrels a day from 250,000 barrels a day previously.Despite the increase in output, analysts do not expect Libya to return to its previous output of 1.4 million barrels soon.

Euro pushes higher despite ECB deflation concerns

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro pushed higher against the dollar late Thursday, reversing earlier losses that came after the European Central Bank pledged action to ward off deflation or a credit crunch. The euro dropped sharply from about $1.3627 to below $1.3570 minutes after ECB President Mario Draghi acknowledged continuing worries about the threat of deflation in the eurozone, with the ECB pledging decisive action if conditions worsen. But at 2200 GMT the euro was back up to $1.3606. compared to $1.3571 late Thursday. The euro also gained on the Japanese currency, to 142.58 yen from 142.26 yen, while the dollar slipped to 104.79 yen from 104.82 yen. There was caution ahead of Friday's release of US jobs data for December, with analysts expecting a possible upside surprise on the number of jobs created. Both the ECB and the Bank of England kept their benchmark rates in place on Thursday, with the ECB focusing on downside risks. The recovery is there, but it is weak, modest and fragile, Draghi said. That means there are several risks -- financial, economic, geopolitical, political -- that could undermine easily this recovery, he said. Overall, we remain determined to maintain the high degree of monetary accommodation and to take further decisive action if required.David Song, currency analyst at DailyFX, said low inflation worries in the United States could be playing a role in the dollar's value as well. The ongoing improvement in the labor market may prompt the (Federal Reserve's) Federal Open Market Committee to take a more aggressive approach in normalizing monetary policy, said Song. But a further slowdown in wage growth may encourage the central bank to further delay its exit strategy amid the threat for disinflation. The British pound edged higher to $1.6482 from $1.6447.The dollar fell to 0.9066 Swiss franc from 0.9111 franc.

He hit ten boundaries during his defiant 330-minute stay at the crease.Silva pulled off-spinner Saeed Ajmal to mid-wicket boundary to reach his second Test half-century and then had two fours off Ali to help Sri Lanka overhaul Pakistan's total.Jayawardene, who failed in both the innings of the first Test with five and nought, successfully overturned a leg-before decision against him by Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford when on 26.Pakistan took the second new ball in the 81st over and could have been rewarded in the next over had wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed not spilled a simple chance from Mathews off Ali when the batsman had just six.Resuming at 57-1, Sri Lanka had hoped experienced batsman Sangakkara would score more but the left-hander fell in the sixth over of the day.Left-arm paceman Ali, who went wicketless in the first Test, trapped Sangakkara leg before Junaid, who had innings best figures of 2-75, then had Chandimal caught at deep fine-leg off an uppish hook shot.Pakistan's bowling woes were highlighted by Ajmal's failure for a second successive innings. He went wicketless in 49 second innings overs of the first Test and once again failed to make an impact in his 27 overs.Pakistan's bowling coach Mohammad Akram said they tried everything but couldn't get Jayawardene out.The pitch was different from the first day and our bowlers tried every thing but we couldn't get Mahela who played a very good knock, said Akram. The third and final Test will be played in Sharjah from January 16.
