Football: Suarez indefensible, says Fowler and players' rep

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler said Wednesday the club could sell Luis Suarez as English football figures united in condemnation of the Uruguayan's latest bite scandal.Suarez faces a lengthy ban from FIFA after he apparently sank his teeth into Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini's shoulder during Uruguay's 1-0 win that saw them move into the World Cup knockout round.Fowler refused to defend Suarez, saying a man he had seen do so much good work had again shown his ugly side. And he fears he may now be allowed to leave Liverpool, with Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly keen on signing him.You can't defend him, the former Liverpool striker said.Off the pitch he's an absolutely lovely fella. He does so much work for charity, does so much work in the community in Liverpool, and I love him as a player, but you cannot condone what he has done. When he gets on the pitch he just becomes a different person, Fowler told talkSPORT, admitting he was flummoxed. He said Liverpool fans would be saddened, having backed Suarez through two bans he served at the club, one for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic arm in a Premier League game in April 2013 and another for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. It's a real, real tough predicament most Liverpool fans are in. They love him as a player, but he's continually dragging the club's name through the mud, Fowler said. It's not right, especially after how they helped him last time. They tried to rehabilitate him.I wouldn't be surprised if he went now.Joey Barton, the former Newcastle and Marseille midfielder who is no stranger to controversy himself, suggested Suarez's apparent bite was something which comes with the territory of being a winner.Barton wrote on Twitter: I love Suarez. I love his passion for the game... I am also aware you can't defend him here. All things considered I'd rather receive a bite than a leg breaking challenge. He's a winner. If that means he occasionally steps over the line between right and wrong, than that's what comes with the territory...Nobody's perfect...But Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor said he feared Suarez's career could be brought to a premature end if he fails to control his behaviour.Taylor -- who heads what is effectively the players' union -- worked with Suarez over the Evra affair and helped to broker a truce last summer when the Uruguayan declared his wish to leave Liverpool. He eventually stayed and scored 31 goals in a push which nearly secured the Premier League title.Taylor said of the biting incident: It was just so disappointing, really.I've been disappointed about England, but doubly disappointing when our player of the year, the Footballer Writers' player of the year and last season I thought he'd got himself back on track, he told BBC radio. We felt these were issues he had and offered counselling with regard to anger management. We've seen the best of him and that other side in just two games over in Brazil.Issues with regard to biting is something not normally associated with senior players in the game.It can't be acceptable and from that point of view there are serious issues to be dealt with and they're health issues, counselling issues, mental health issues. It certainly needs that to try to eradicate this from his make-up, otherwise I fear for his career.Paul Scholes, who played nearly 500 times for Manchester United, believes a 10-match ban would not be a strong enough punishment. He told paddypower.com that Suarez's 10-game ban for biting Ivanovic obviously wasn't enough. On Tuesday night, with the biting incident... Suarez embarrassed his club, country and family.Banning him for the rest of the World Cup is not enough, because Colombia will beat Uruguay in their next game anyway.Scholes thinks Suarez's behaviour will overshadow his ability as a footballer. He will feel terrible, and the entire incident is such a shame because he's a tremendous player, Scholes added. But people will remember Suarez now for his biting antics at this World Cup rather than his supreme footballing ability.

3D imaging detects more breast cancer than mammography

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The largest study of its kind to date has shown that three-dimensional imaging finds more breast cancers than traditional mammography alone, according to research published on Tuesday. The technique, called 3D mammography, or tomosynthesis, was approved by US regulators in 2011 after initial research showed it could reduce false-positives and improve cancer detection. This study confirms what we already know: 3D mammography finds more of the invasive, harmful cancers we want found and saves women the anxiety and cost of having additional exams for what turns out to be a false alarm, said study co-author Donna Plecha, director of breast imaging at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association included nearly half a million mammograms taken at 13 different US sites. It found a 41 percent increase in invasive cancers found with 3D imaging over digital mammography alone, and a 29 percent increase in the detection of all kinds of breast cancer. The researchers also found that 3D technology resulted in 15 percent fewer recalls for false alarms. However, the study was not randomized and did not focus on whether the increase in detection translated into longer survival after diagnosis, so more research is needed, the authors said.Breast cancer kills some 40,000 women in the United States each year.An accompanying editorial in JAMA described the results as promising but not enough to settle the long-running debate over how often women should be screened for breast cancer and what type of technology should be used.Tomosynthesis is likely an advance over digital mammography for breast cancer screening, but fundamental questions about screening remain, with all available technologies, said the editorial by doctors at the University of Toronto and the Medical University of South Carolina.Clear consensus is lacking on when to screen, how often, and with what tools, or even which screen-detected cancers could be managed more conservatively, they wrote. The editorial called on the US National Institutes of Health to fund a multi-site randomized trial that compares modern technology to address these questions.Currently, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends women get one mammogram per year starting at age 40.

Tennis: Murray hands Wimbledon lesson to college star

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Defending champion Andy Murray handed out a tough Wimbledon lesson to Slovenian grasscourt rookie Blaz Rola on Wednesday as Li Na and Venus Williams struck early blows for the thirty-somethings.Murray, the third seed, coasted to a 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 mauling of 23-year-old Rola who was playing just the 10th match of his career having only graduated from university in Ohio last year. The British star eased to victory in just 84 minutes, hitting seven aces and 27 winners against the world number 92 and goes on to face either Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic or Spanish 27th seed Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the last 16.It's his first year on grass so it was tough for him. But he has a good game and he'll keep improving, said Murray.I took care of my serve for the majority of the match and I played well. If you can finish matches as quick as possible then that's better in the long run.French Open semi-finalist Ernests Gulbis became the highest ranked man to lose so far when the 12th seed went down to Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7/5).Stakhovksy, who shocked Roger Federer in the second round in 2013, next faces either France's Jeremy Chardy or Australia's Marinko Matosevic. The colourful Gulbis then denied he had lost all of his $500,000 winnings from the French Open in a Riga casino.I went to play blackjack, but there was no word how much I won or how much I lost. They (reporters) asked me how much I lost. I said, A lot. I was joking, he said.Next day in Latvia they say I lost all my winnings. My mother sends me a message next day asking am I crazy. I may be but I'm not stupid.Australian Open champion Li Na, a three-time quarter-finalist at the All England Club, swept to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Austria's Yvonne Meusburger, hitting 33 winners to just four from the world number 38.Second seed Li, 32, goes on to face Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic. She said she was unconcerned about her 21 unforced errors. If you want to play more aggressive, this is the normal way, she explained.Five-time champion Williams, 34, and playing in her 17th Wimbledon, defeated pint-sized Japanese Kurumi Nara 7-6 (7/4), 6-1 in a battle of little and large on Court 3.- Little and large -====================The American, who is the oldest woman left in the draw, stands at an imposing 1.85m (6ft 1in) compared to Nara's 1.55m (5ft 1n) and the difference in stature -- both physical and sporting -- eventually told despite the world number 41 breaking early in both sets.Williams will face 2011 champion Petra Kvitova in the third round if the Czech sixth seed beats Germany's Mona Barthel.Feeling good getting into the next round, said Williams.I think we both play a similar game, really go for it and she's one of the kind of players that can get really hot and every time she plays me, she plays really well, so I have to be ready for that.Polish fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, the 2012 runner-up, also went through with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Australia's Casey Dellacqua and next meets either Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito or Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova.Later Wednesday, top seed Novak Djokovic takes on Czech veteran Radek Stepanek for a place in the last 32 hoping to avoid the fate suffered by his coach Boris Becker in 1987.The German legend, who captured three Wimbledon titles in his career, is the only top seed in the history of the tournament to lose in the second round when he was beaten by Peter Doohan 27 years ago.Djokovic, the champion in 2011, isn't likely to fall into the same trap as he takes a 10-1 career record over Stepanek into their Centre Court meeting.Stepanek beat Wimbledon champion Andy Murray at Queen's Club two weeks ago but his sole win over Djokovic was way back in 2006.Queen's champion Grigor Dimitrov, the 11th seeded Bulgarian, faces Australia's Luke Saville in a clash of two former junior champions.Meanwhile, 1997 singles champion Martina Hingis appears at the All England Club for the first time since 2007 when she teams up with Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the women's doubles first round.Hingis won nine Grand Slam doubles titles in her career but she and Zvonareva have a tough opener against fourth seeds Cara Black and Sania Mirza.

Cricket: Boycott says clock ticking on Cook's time as England captain

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - Geoffrey Boycott said he feared Alastair Cook could be hounded out of the England captaincy after the team's 100-run defeat by Sri Lanka in the second Test at Headingley on Tuesday. After their 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia, England installed a new managing director in Paul Downton, a new head coach in Peter Moores, and a new chairman of selectors in James Whitaker. However, all three insisted it was vital Cook remained as England captain.Cook is too stubborn an individual to resign because he would see it as a sign of weakness, England opening great Boycott wrote in his column in Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper published Wednesday.Downton, Whitaker and Moores have hung their hats on him taking England forward, so if they were to sack him so quickly after all they have said about the new era, it would be embarrassing for them. They can be as supportive as they want and he can be as stubborn as he wants but if he fails with the bat in the first Test against India at Nottingham, which starts on July 9, and we lose again, then public opinion and the media will be so vocal he may be hounded out. After the match, Cook insisted he had no intention of resigning as captain even though 24 innings have passed since the opener scored the last of his England record 25 Test hundreds.- 'Same old rubbish' -======================But Boycott was scathing regarding the tactics Cook had employed at Headingley, where Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews batted the tourists into a winning position with a Test-best 160.We are watching the same old rubbish and we cannot go on playing like this. We have to stop spurning chances to win.At Headingley, Cook gave a lesson in how to lose a Test match from a winning position. He had no imagination, no plan B and no different tactics as Angelo Mathews batted Sri Lanka into a winning position. It was just mind boggling. You have to have a feel for captaincy. You cannot go to bloody school or learn it from a book.Boycott also accused James Anderson and Stuart Broad , England's experienced new-ball duo, of bowling absolute tripe.Michael Vaughan, also writing in the Telegraph, questioned whether Cook had it in him to be tough with his bowlers. We do not know what he (Cook) is like in the dressing room, Vaughan, England's 2005 Ashes-winning captain, said.As captain, you have to be hard with your mates if they are not performing. It is your job as a captain to get the ball out of their hands and give them a rocket when they have had a series of bad days.As a captain, you look at the likes of Stuart Broad and James Anderson and view them as your bankers. But they bowled too short, have been wayward, lacked rhythm and appeared jaded.Cook said that, despite controversially ditching all-time leading run-scorer Kevin Pietersen and being without senior batsman Jonathan Trott (stress-related illness) and off-spinner Graeme Swann (retirement), the impact of the Ashes debacle was still having an effect on a 'new-look' England team.Probably what happened over the winter is still there, getting hammered in Australia, he said.(There is) that lasting effect, even with a different side.

Football: Time has come for Belgium to emulate boys of '86

Posted:

SAO PAULO (AFP) - They may have only played two matches at this World Cup but Belgium have already got their fans dreaming of emulating the class of 86.Back in Mexico in 1986, a team inspired by the wonderfully gifted Enzo Scifo stunned the world by progressing all the way to the semi-finals before falling to eventual winners Argentina and their inspirational captain Diego Maradona. The current crop, feted for some burgeoning young talents and its cosmopolitan nature, have already qualified for the knock-out rounds with a game to spare.A point in their final match against South Korea at the Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo -- hardly an Everest given how the Asians defended against Algeria in a 4-2 defeat -- would see them top the group and most likely avoid Germany in the second round.Following on from their impressive unbeaten qualification campaign it has got many believing they can emulate the achievements of 1986.If this talented team dont reach the semi-finals of a big tournament in the next six years then we could talk about waste, said Scifo. But that is certainly not talk which daunts the Red Devils current coach Marc Wilmots, who feels it is high time a group of players did something to rival the memory of a generation who dazzled before most of the current team had been even born.In fact only five of the 23-man squad in Brazil were born before the 1986 finals, and of those, only Nicolas Lombaerts had actually celebrated a birthday. The past, with the results from the World Cup of 1986 in Mexico, was great but now its our turn, said Wilmots. Thats what Ive told the players. The time has come to put down the books and write our own history. One player many expect to lead that bid to rewrite the record books is Eden Hazard, who even by his own admission has not had the best of starts to the tournament, despite creating the winning goal in both Belgiums matches so far.And he says the players are willing to shoulder the burden of expectation. It puts a bit of pressure on us. The expectation is huge but that shouldnt hinder us, he said. The fans believe were better than the Devils of 1986, but thats no guarantee of results.- they need to be men -=========================Its not just the fans who believe a team featuring captain and centre-back Vincent Kompany, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and powerful striker Romelu Lukaku is more talented that its predecessors. From a technical point of view theres a lot more quality (in the current team) than there was in ours, Michel Ranquin, a centre-half from the 1986 team, told Le Soir newspaper.Given his side boasted the likes of goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff, right-back Eric Gerets, and midfielders Scifo and Jan Ceulemans, that is quite a statement.Whatever the technical merits of each side, for Gerets it is something else that will determine how far Kompany and co. will go.We had some success in Mexico. The first round was a calamity, the progress past Russia in the last 16 was a minor miracle. But none of that would have happened without the character we had, said Gerets. To succeed at a World Cup you have to give your all, be fighters on the pitch. Be men, whatIm waiting to see if the current players have that trait. If its the case, then yes, we can start dreaming. For Wilmots, who made the first of his four World Cup finals appearances in the 1990 edition, it boils down to something more simple: getting results.Asked if this was a golden generation, he replied: We can say that the day my team has achieved a great result.

Cricket: WIndies and New Zealand set for thrilling finale

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - West Indies and New Zealand head into the decisive final match of their three-Test series at Kensington Oval on Thursday with both teams anticipating a keen contest and the greater likelihood of fast bowlers determining the result. In contrast to the pre-series anticipation of spinners holding sway over the three matches, the home side is now hopeful that there will be greater assistance for the frontline pacers. This has prompted the visitors to also consider altering the balance of their bowling attack in seeking to repeat the historic victory at the venue in 2002 which ultimately resulted in their only Test series win in the Caribbean so far.Hopefully well get a very good surface, one that helps our quick bowlers a little bit more than maybe Trinidad and Jamaica, said West Indies head coach Ottis Gibson ahead of the match. Our fast bowlers are bowling fantastically well so hopefully we get a pitch that gives them a little bit of support and they can continue to bowl the way they have been bowling and bowl us to a series win.Tall fast-medium bowler Jason Holder is tipped to make a Test debut on his home ground with the expectation that he will replace Shannon Gabriel. The burly pacer took four wickets in the second Test win but lacked the consistency and effectiveness that was expected of him.Following a convincing 186-run win with a day to spare on a dry pitch at Sabina Park in the first Test, New Zealand had the tables turned on them emphatically in going under by ten wickets in the second match at Queens Park Oval last week.Debutant spinner Mark Craig was the match-winning hero with eight wickets in Kingston but then struggled in Port of Spain on a track that had more grass on it than usual and held together much better over the final two days than has been the pattern for several years. However his battling knock of 67 in the second innings should keep him in the side with the pressure on leg-spinner Ish Sodhi to hold on to his place as the tourists seek to bolster their seam attack by adding Neil Wagner or all-rounder Corey Anderson to the final eleven. There is speculation that both could be included with captain Brendon McCullum promoting himself up the order to open the batting alongside the consistent Tom Latham, as he did in the second innings in Trinidad when regular opener Mark Rutherford was unwell.Teams (probable)West Indies - Chris Gayle, Kraigg Brathwaite, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Jermaine Blackwood, Denesh Ramdin (captain), Kemar Roach, Jerome Taylor, Jason Holder, Sulieman Benn.New Zealand - Tom Latham, Brendon McCullum (captain), Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Jimmy Neesham, Corey Anderson, B.J. Watling, Tim Southee, Mark Craig, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult.

Nearly 50 killed in new wave of violence in Central Africa

Posted:

BANGUI (AFP) - Nearly 50 people have been killed in three days in a fresh surge of sectarian violence in the Central African Republic, a peacekeeping officer said Wednesday. The violence was triggered by the killing of 17 Muslims at a camp in the central Bambari region on Monday, by gunmen claiming to be from a mostly Christian militia called the anti-balaka.Peacekeepers say the massacre has led to a series of reprisals and counter reprisals.Nearly 50 people have been killed since Monday during violence in the Bambari region and nearby villages, the officer from the African Union force MISCA told AFP. Most of the victims were shot or stabbed to death. The deeply impoverished Central African Republic has seen more than a year of unrest, with violence between mostly-Muslim ex-Seleka rebels and largely Christian militias leaving thousands dead and about a quarter of the population displaced. The MISCA officer said the latest violence has been carried out both by uncontrolled individuals and by small groups, and that civilians have been fleeing towards the cathedral, the archbishops palace, and local government buildings for safety.Apart from attacks aimed at civilians and the burning down of houses, there are also clashes that appear to be coordinated attacks by armed groups, both from Christian and Muslim militias, said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity. An anti-balaka representative in the capital Bangui denied being behind the latest violence, saying they did not recognise these out-of-control young rebels acting on their own initiative. At a time when anti-balaka and ex-Seleka are in contact, discussing peace and reconciliation, the anti-balaka does not engage in such acts, militia spokesman Brice-Emotion Namsio said.Bambari, a mining town where ex-Seleka rebels have established their headquarters, is being closely watched by French soldiers from the Sangaris mission and African peacekeepers from the MISCA force although they have not been able to contain the violence.Fighting in a village outside the town in early June left at least 22 people dead, both Muslim and Christian, according to security officials, and last week 10 bodies showing signs of torture were found in a river in the region. The Seleka seized power in Bangui in a coup in March 2013, ousting president Francois Bozize and installing Michel Djotodia as head of state until he resigned last January, giving way to a transitional regime. Many Seleka forces went rogue and killed, raped and looted civilians, leading to a backlash with the emergence of anti-balaka (anti-machete) forces, who are equally accused of widespread atrocities, primarily targeting the Muslim minority. In a report released on Tuesday, advocacy group the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) said that war crimes and crimes against humanity continue to be carried out as the conflict rages in the former French colony. The international community must support African, French and soon UN forces in putting an end to these crimes, protect civilians and bring those responsible for these crimes to justice, FIDH president Karim Lahidji said.

Tennis: Venus Williams enjoys winning feeling

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Venus Williams said she enjoying the winning feeling at Wimbledon as the five-time champion made it through to the third round on Wednesday for the first time since 2011.Williams, seeded 30th, was broken early in both sets by Japan's world number 41 Kurumi Nara in their round two clash on Court 3, but eventually triumphed 7-6 (7/4), 6-1 in a 91-minute workout. She will face 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the third round if the Czech sixth seed beats Germany's Mona Barthel.Feeling good getting into the next round, Williams said, already looking ahead to a potential clash of the former champions.I think we both play a similar game, really go for it and she's one of the kind of players that can get really hot and every time she plays me, she plays really well, so I have to be ready for that, the American said. Her first meeting with Nara was a battle of little and large. At 1.55 metres tall, Nara is the shortest player in the top 100, while Williams at 1.85 metres is the third tallest, behind Maria Sharapova and Karolina Pliskova.Williams turned on the style in the first-set decider. The tie-breaker, that's what it comes down to: who's going to be more consistent and more aggressive and in the beginning, she was but thankfully I was able to turn it around, she said.Nara, who has never got past the second round at the All England Club, again got the early break but Williams reeled off six straight games in a row to seal the match. You get so focused, you don't really think abut the games and she had some great shots in that (first) game and some lucky returns and bounces but you have to kind of take it all on the grass, said the 34-year-old veteran.Williams is the oldest woman left in the tournament after 43-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan crashed out on day one.The second-round victory is the first time Williams has put together back-to-back wins at Wimbledon since 2011.It is Venus's 17th Wimbledon appearance, and her 63rd career Grand Slam appearance. She is joint fourth on the all-time list with Ai Sugiyama, while Amy Frazier holds the record at 71.She now has the most match wins of any active player, at 73, with only Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Chris Evert having more.
