Posted:

MELBOURNE (Dunya News) – Pakistan Cricket Board’s claim of being granted ‘Big Four’ status by International Cricket Council (ICC) could not be confirmed as of Thursday night. The matter of India-Pakistan cricket series also appears to be halted, Dunya News reported.Earlier, PCB announced through a press release that the ICC has agreed to grant fourth rank to Pakistan after the ‘Big Three.’Pakistan has made extraordinarily significant gains at the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) annual meeting at Melbourne on Thursday, the PCB stated in a press release.“Of the three major concessions that PCB Chairman Mr. Najam Sethi was able to secure to Pakistan’s great advantage are: After N. Srinivasan’s election as the first ICC Chairman in a landslide, India has officially turned the MOUs signed earlier this year with regard to six rubbers between the two nations, four of these to be hosted by the PCB in the UAE or Pakistan with mutual consent, into binding agreements straightaway. The six tours are now part of the Future Tours Programme and are to be played from 2015 to 2023,” the PCB said. However, when Indian Cricket Board was contacted to confirm the MoUs, they refused to comment on the matter, virtually hinting of lack of any breakthrough. The ICC has also confirmed that Pakistan will get the position of the global body’s President for two years with effect from June 2015.“The PCB had organized itself and planned to get maximum advantage for Pakistan cricket from an extremely precarious position. We have accomplished all our objectives. PCB chief Najam Sethi said while speaking in Melbourne.

Google Android software spreading to cars, watches, TV

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Google is expanding its empire to cars, watches, businesses and televisions. The technology titan laid out a sweeping vision at the opening of a sold-out developers conference in a keynote presentation streamed online to millions of people across the world. We are beginning to evolve our platforms beyond mobile, Android and Chrome teams chief Sundar Pichai said of how Google's twin operating systems are being adapted to work with one another and with new types of computing hardware.Google's goal, according to Pichai, is to have its software be a foundation for applications, services or digital content delivered seamlessly across the increasingly diverse array of Internet-linked screens in people's lives.A new LG G smartwatch and a freshly-announced Gear Live smartwatch by Samsung that both work with the Android Wear platform debuted Wednesday at the online shop Google Play.On-stage demonstrations included ordering a pizza in seconds, fielding reminders and messages, and using voice commands on smartwatches. An eagerly awaited Moto 360 smartwatch is due to join the Android Wear lineup later this year. These are the first three watches, but there are more on the way, Pichai said.- Android on the road -=======================Android Auto software for cars, synching smartphones with in-dashboard screens and controls, is being shared with automakers, and vehicles are set to be equipped by the end of this year.Android Auto brings apps like Google Maps and Spotify music service to an interface built for driving, according to a freshly formed coalition of technology and car companies called the Open Automotive Alliance.Google also announced another shot at smart televisions with Android TV software for what are typically the biggest screens in homes.Google is giving televisions the same level of attention that phones and tablets have enjoyed, according to Android engineering director Dave Burke.Android smartphones, complete with voice command features, could be used to direct searches and more on television screens, an on-stage demonstration showed.Games from the Google Play shop could also be played on televisions.- Expanding Google empire -===========================The Google empire is trying to grow, Gartner consumer technology research director Brian Blau told AFP on the sidelines of the San Francisco keynote presentation.Google is trying to be more like Apple; create more consistent experiences with devices that work together.Handset or tablet makers are free to customize free Android software to suit hardware and set themselves apart from rivals, but this has resulted in popular applications working on some gadgets and not others in a situation referred to as fragmentation.Apple, on the other hand, so tightly controls software powering iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices that developers can more easily target broad audiences.Improving how well popular services or applications work across Android devices should also entice users to lock in to the platform the way Apple devotees remain loyal to the Cupertino, California company's gear, according to Blau.Lots of variations of Android make developers work harder to support all those devices, the analyst said.A consistent experience will help Google in the long run.Google also showed off steps it is taking to make Android devices along with its services offered in the Internet cloud amenable to workplaces.Improvements include tools for separating personal and company uses of mobile devices, as well as better handling of files made using Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint programs.Outside the convention center, protesters dressed as Star Wars film bad guy Darth Vader to remind Google of its founding vow not to be evil.Protests did not disrupt on-stage presentations, and Pichai made a point of addressing criticism that women engineers are scarce in Silicon Valley firms.Among those watching the conference online was a group of female developers in Nigeria, said Pichai, who noted that more than a fifth of those taking part in the conference are women. We are working hard to elevate women in computer sciences, Pichai said.

Tennis: Nishikori crushes Kudla to make third round

LONDON (AFP) - Kei Nishikori surged into the Wimbledon third round as the Japanese 10th seed thrashed American qualifier Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 on Thursday.Nishikori has never gone past the third round at the All England Club in five attempts, but the world number 12 looks a good bet to end that frustrating run this year.He was far too strong for Kudla, hitting 40 winners to just 14 from the world number 136, and hasn't dropped a set in his opening two matches. The 24-year-old will face German 22nd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber or Italy's Simone Bolelli for a place in the last 16.Nishikori, whose best run at a Grand Slam came in 2012 when he reached the Australian Open quarter-finals, has struggled at Wimbledon in the past, losing in the third round for the last two years. But his pre-Wimbledon grasscourt practice sessions with coach Michael Chang appear to be paying dividends already.Following that intense training period with former French Open champion Chang, Nishikori reached the Halle semi-finals on grass. He was never threatened by Ukraine-born Kudla, a 21-year-old who looked out of his depth against the Japanese star.Nishikori, who underlined his emerging talent by reaching his first Masters final in Madrid last month, took the first set with two early breaks.Another pair of breaks in the second set cemented his advantage and he cruised to victory in 88 minutes on Court 18.

Cricket: No India walkout threat to ICC - Srinivasan

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - New ICC chairman N. Srinivasan on Thursday denied reports that India's all-powerful cricket board had threatened to pull out of the global body. The Indian cricket chief has been put in charge of the International Cricket Council amid changes to its governance that have handed the majority of power and revenues to the sport's big three nations -- India, Australia and England.Earlier this month Sanjay Patel, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was quoted as saying India had considered quitting the ICC unless it received a greater share of the global game's revenues. But asked if the reported threat to walk away from the ICC had played a driving force in the development of the Big Three proposals, Srinivasan said that was an incorrect assessment.India has at all times been very supportive of the ICC, he told a news conference during the ICC annual conference in Melbourne. We may not always agree. But that doesn't mean that one walks away.We (India) have a view. We always felt we had a right to express our view. That doesn't mean at any time we would have even dreamt of walking away from the ICC.Patel had reportedly said the BCCI demanded a meeting with the ICC at its Dubai headquarters after commissioning a survey which showed India generated more than 70 percent of the game's revenues. We told them that if India is not getting its proper due and importance then India might be forced to form a second ICC of its own, Patel said in speech in Hyderabad, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.Srinivasan was appointed ICC chief on Thursday despite being suspended by India's Supreme Court as the country's top cricket official, after being named in a damning report into corruption allegations in the Indian Premier League. But on Thursday the man regarded as world cricket's most powerful figure said his conscience was clear. The media is entitled to have a view, Srinivasan said.Ultimately the facts have to be there. Most of the criticism is not well-founded, as time will tell.Beyond that, it is difficult for me to go because there is a matter in some court that I do not want to overstep.Srinivasan was among 13 people named in the Indian Premier League corruption allegations. The IPL Twenty20 competition has been embroiled in allegations of illegal betting and spot-fixing, including against Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, who was the team principal of the Chennai Super Kings.

Tennis: Serena into Wimbledon third round

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Serena Williams handed South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers a Wimbledon masterclass as the five-time champion raced into the third round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on Thursday.Top seed Williams needed only an hour to dismiss Anna Tatishvili in the first round and the world number one was even more ruthless against Scheepers, crushing her in 49 minutes to set up a last 32 meeting with French 25th seed Alize Cornet. The 32-year-old had seethed over her shock first round exit against Garbine Muguruza at the French Open last month and appears intention on taking out those frustrations on her Wimbledon opponents.Serena, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, overwhelmed Scheepers with 26 winners, compared to five from the world number 94, and eight aces.Williams admitted being expected to rout lower ranked opponents like Scheepers can sometimes be a burden, but she is thriving despite the pressure of her status as tournament favourite. It's been like that for the past two or three years. I am always the favourite and that can be a bit of pressure, but it's ok. I have learnt to deal with it, Serena said.Williams also revealed she was relieved to have avoided any more embarrassing tumbles on the slick grasscourt after falling into the crowd during her doubles match with sister Venus on Wednesday night.I was out really late in a fun doubles match last night with Venus, she added. Some wonderful gents caught me as I fell into the crowd, It was so embarrassing, I just had to laugh.Scheepers had finally made it to the second round at Wimbledon for the first time after four consecutive opening round defeats. But, faced with the daunting task of trying to tame Serena, the 30-year-old could have been forgiven for wondering if it had been worth the effort. The American was in full flight right from the start and clinched an embarrassingly one-sided set in only 25 minutes. The Court One onslaught continued in the second set as Serena showed no mercy to the shell-shocked Scheepers, adding two more breaks to complete a ruthless destruction.

Hafiz Saeed rejects US allegations

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed on Thursday rejected the allegations leveled by the United States, Dunya News reported.Addressing an emergency press conference in Lahore, Hafiz Saeed said “US restrictions have no value for us.” He said the United States always take decisions on Indian dictation. If America has any evidence, it should bring it forward. The JuD chief further said he is ready to present his stance but baseless allegations should be avoided, adding that US should review its attitude first. He claimed that the US pushed Pakistan for North Waziristan operation and wanted to see destruction in the country but the situation is quite different. Earlier, the U.S. State Department named Jamaat-ud-Dawa foreign terrorist organization, a status that freezes any assets it has under U.S. jurisdiction.Jamaat-ud-Dawa's listing will prohibit U.S. entities or citizens from dealing with the organization, but will probably have little practical effect on its operations or fund raising. The group says it is currently carrying out charitable work in the remote border region of North Waziristan to help residents displaced by military operations. In 2012, the United States offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Hafiz Saeed, who founded Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). He claims he has long abandoned its leadership and now heads Jamaat-ud-Dawa.
