At least 30 killed in DR Congo ethnic violence

Posted:

KINSHASA (AFP) - At least 30 men, women and children were killed in inter-ethnic violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo overnight, most of them slaughtered as they slept in a church, local sources said Saturday. The killing took place in Mutarule, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Bukavu, a local official told AFP by telephone from the capital of Sud-Kivu province. The sources said the victims were ethnic Bafuliru, and most of them were killed while sleeping in a Protestant church after taking part in a parish meeting. The victims were either shot or stabbed to death. In all, eight men, 14 women, 10 children and a soldier were killed, said one local councillor, reporting 33 deaths. He added that 28 more people were wounded. The UN mission in DR Congo (MONUSCO) late Saturday issued a statement saying that fierce fighting had taken place the night before between the Bafuliru on one side and the ethnic Barundi and Banyamulenge on the other. This violence is unacceptable and must end immediately, said Martin Kobler, head of MONUSCO.The Barundi and Banyamulenge are Tutsis originally from Burundi who have been living in Sud-Kivu for generations. There has been a conflict for a dozen years between the Bafuliru and the Barundi over property and custom issues. South Kivu's Interior Minister Jean-Julien Miruho told AFP that the attack was likely in revenge for cattle raids in the region. It is a problem of (stolen) cattle, and one side went to seek revenge, he said.Local sources also confirmed that there had been a problem of stolen cattle in the region.UN peacekeepers have been sent to Mutarule to evacuate the wounded and help the local authorities and the Congolese army restore calm to the area.

Tennis: Maria Sharapova wins French Open

PARIS (AFP) - Maria Sharapova won her second French Open title in three years at Roland Garros on Saturday, defeating Romania's Simona Halep 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-4 in a gripping final, the first to go the full distance in Paris in 13 years and the second longest on record. It was the 27-year-old Russian's fifth Grand Slam title, bringing her level with Martina Hingis on the all-time list and it came 10 years after she won her first major at Wimbledon 2004.Sharapova, who completed a career sweep of all four Grand Slam titles in Paris in 2012 before losing to Serena Williams last year, also moved to number two on the all-time prize money earnings, with only the American ahead of her.But it took all her legendary grit and resolve to recover from the agonising loss of the second set on a tie-break after she had stood just two points away from the title at 5/3. It's the toughest Grand Slam final I have ever played, said Sharapova.I can't believe that at 27 I have won the French Open more times than any other Grand Slam. The consolation for Halep, whose meteoric rise to the top bracket in women's tennis over the last 18 months has projected her as a potential champion, was that she will climb to a career-high third in the world rankings.I wish to have many more (Grand Slam finals), but this will be special for me all my life. I had two incredible weeks here and I played my best tennis, she saidThe two finalists reached the championship match in starkly contrasting styles.Fourth-seeded Halep did not drop a single set in her six matches, while seventh-seed Sharapova needed to battle back from first set losses in her three previous outings. But experience was massively on the Russian's side. This was her ninth Grand Slam final dating back 10 years, while Halep was playing in her first at the age of 22.Sharapova also towered over her opponent at 1.88 metres (6 feet 2 inches) compared to Halep's 1.68 metres (5 feet six inches). It was yet another shaky start from Sharapova as the final got underway on a sun-splashed and sultry centre court. She dropped serve in the first game and was soon 2-0 down, but the Russian promptly found her range and she was back level after a thrilling fourth game that saw several deuces and some big hitting from both ends.In what was developing into a final of the highest quality, the first five games all went to deuce, but it was Sharapova who gradually gained the ascendancy. She broke Halep's serve again, this time to 15, to lead 4-2, but three games later her suspect serve once more let her down and the Romanian broke back.Halep though was unable to level the score as she dropped serve for the third time, handing Sharapova the set in 57 minutes. Sharapova opened the second set with a confident love game on serve and then came out on top in another lengthy deuce tussle to move 2-0 ahead. The biggest earner in women's sport and global superstar was in the driving seat, but her level unaccountably dipped as Halep broke back to level at 2-2.Two double faults to start the next game had Sharapova looking anxious, but she compensated with some hefty hitting off both flanks to regain the lead.Three games later the Russian squandered two break points to serve for the match and she played a sloppy service game to follow allowing Halep to break from 15-40 down.Halep was twice unable to serve out for the set, but she stunned Sharapova in the ensuing tie-break, winning four points in a row from 5-3 down to level the set scores. The final was into the third set for the first time since 2001 when Jennifer Capriati defeated Kim Clijsters 12-10 in the decider and it was Sharapova who found a new gear just when she needed it.The Russian broke clear to lead 4-2, before Halep once again reeled her in to level at 4-4.But the 16th break of serve in the next game finally saw Sharapova on the way to stagger past the winning post after three hours and two minutes of enthralling tennis.

Football: Villa's brace lifts Spain over El Salvador

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - David Villa scored twice as Spain defeated El Salvador 2-0 on Saturday in their final World Cup warm-up match before they launch the defence of their title in Brazil. The Atletico Madrid striker netted a header in the 60th minute and added the clincher in the 87th minute, producing his 57th and 58th career goals for the Spanish national side. The Spaniards kick-off their World Cup Group B campaign against the Netherlands on Friday in a rematch of the stormy 2010 final they won in South Africa. Spain's other first round opponents are Chile and Australia.Villa opened the scoring after a pass to Sergio Ramos pulled Salvadoran goalkeeper Derby Carrillo to his left and away from the posts.Ramos headed the ball back into the heart of the penalty area and Villa nodded it into the unguarded goal.Villa, who is set to play in Australia later this year before joining a new Major League soccer team in New York next year, made sure of the win three minutes from time.Spanish striker Diego Costa, who lasted only nine minutes for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final against Real Madrid due to a right hamstring problem, started and played until the 74th minute with no signs of trouble.Spain dominated play early on but had nothing to show for it.A foul by Carrillo set up a fourth-minute penalty for Cesc Fabregas, but the Barcelona striker curled the ball over the crossbar.Spain time and again pressed the attack early against the Salvadorans, owning the ball more than 80 percent of the first half but unable to score, while the Central American side struggled to even gain possession across the midfield line.Real Madrid defender Ramos curled a free kick just over the crossbar in the 38th minute.Spanish goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas rescued Spain in the 49th by grabbing a loose ball in the heart of the penalty area after an errant Spanish backline pass.Seconds later on a counterattack, Silva charged to the backline but his center was deflected out by defender Alexander Mendoza.Villa slammed a shot off Carrillo's chest in the 53rd minute and had a dangerous ball deflected over the top in the 58th minute, setting the stage for his opening goal.Carrillo batted aside a header attempt from point blank range by Costa in the 67th minute while Spanish substitute Sergio Busquets slammed a shot off the crossbar in the 80th.

Football: Ronaldo returns to boost Portugal hopes

Posted:

FLORHAM PARK (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo handed Portugal a huge boost on Saturday as he returned to training after leg injuries that had threatened to wreck his World Cup.The star forward has been struggling for weeks with thigh and knee injuries that forced him out of Portugal's last two warm-up matches and raised fears he might miss the start of the Brazil tournament.Portugal kick off their World Cup campaign against Germany on June 16 in Group G, which also features the USA and Ghana. The 29-year-old Ronaldo took part in training with the rest of the Portugal squad in New Jersey, in the United States, and could be in line for a return to competitive action on Tuesday in a friendly with Ireland.Training was a tepid affair, with Ronaldo and his teammates doing stretching and passing drills for the media. The Portuguese have toiled in the Real Madrid ace's absence, drawing 0-0 with Brazil-bound Greece last weekend and laboring against fellow World Cup qualifiers Mexico Friday before grabbing a 1-0 victory in injury time.Experienced midfielder Raul Meireles also trained with the full squad on Saturday, while key defender Pepe, who missed his club Real Madrid's Champions League victory because of injury, stepped up his return but remains on a separate rehabilitation program.Coach Paulo Bento has not hidden his frustration at the constant speculation over the availability of Ronaldo, who has scored 49 goals in 110 matches for Portugal.Ronaldo is not the only good player we have, he snapped on Thursday. But on the evidence of Friday's barely deserved victory -- thanks to a powerful header from stand-in skipper Bruno Alves -- Portugal will need Ronaldo at his brilliant best if they are to make an impact in Brazil.

Formula One: Rosberg takes pole ahead of Hamilton

Posted:

MONTREAL (AFP) - Nico Rosberg continued to enjoy his ascendancy over Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton on Saturday when he snatched pole position for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.Championship leader Rosberg produced a near-flawless lap of controlled speed around the barrier-lined Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to outpace his nearest championship rival by just 0.079 seconds in the final seconds of a dramatic qualifying session. Two weeks after his controversial pole success at the Monaco Grand Prix, the German erased all doubts about his raw speed and talent as he drove with precision and pace to secure his first pole in Canada, his second pole in succession and the seventh of his career. It was his third pole performance this year and came at a track where Hamilton has always shone and previously claimed three poles. It was also the Mercedes team's fourth front row lockout this year.I know it's a track where Lewis is really strong, said Rosberg. I'm very happy it worked out. It has been a fantastic day and through the weekend we have been progressing all the time and I'm in the best position for tomorrow so I am very happy.Asked how he achieved his success against Hamilton on one of the Briton's favourite tracks, he added: It's just working at it all the time, looking at the data, working with engineers and trying to understand areas where I can do better. It's just a process and I'm glad it's worked out.Hamilton said: Nico did a fantastic job so congratulations to him. It was not a particularly bad lap, it just wasn't the greatest qualifying - sometimes you have a good qualifying, sometimes you have bad one.But it's a great to get a one-two for the team and a fantastic performance. Let's hope we can make history tomorrow.Defending four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel bounced back from an inconsistent weekend to grab third place in his Red Bull car ahead of Valtteri Bottas and his Williams team-mate Felipe Massa.Daniel Ricciardo was sixth in the second Red Bull ahead of two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, Jean-Eric Vergne of Toro Rosso, Jenson Button of McLaren and Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari. On a much warmer afternoon than Friday, the session began with plenty of early action for the 21 cars involved, Esteban Gutierrez of Sauber having been forced to sit it out after damaging his chassis in a heavy accident in final free practice.Pastor Maldonado continued his ill luck when he went off and parked his Lotus at Turn Three and he was soon followed by Swedish rookie Marcus Ericsson who hit the barriers on the exit of turn eight, damaging the left rear quarter of his car.Hamilton topped the opening stint which saw Maldonado, Marussia duo Max Chilton and Jules eliminated along with the Caterham pair of Kamui Kobayashi and Ericsson.Massa then set the pace in Q2 with Bottas close behind but in a final flurry Rosberg took over at the top before Hamilton snatched it from him by two-tenths in the final seconds as Mercedes improved significantly. The late drama saw Vettel grab a place in the top-ten shootout, but pushed Nico Hulkenberg and his Force India team-mate Sergio Perez out in 11th and 13th places with rookie Kevin Magnussen 12th between them. This set up a dramatic duel between the two Mercedes men after Bottas had laid down a marker lap to suggest Williams had the pace to beat Red Bull.On their first runs, Rosberg was quickest by a fraction and, with a lap in 1:14.946, the first man to break through the 1:15 barrier. This ensured a big effort in response from Hamilton in the final action of the hour.

Where should we go for justice if not on streets? Imran Khan

SIALKOT (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan asked while addressing PTI rally here on Saturday that from whom PTI should seek justice if the judiciary can’t provide it, Dunya News reported.“I want to talk to honourable judges, you have to face God one day and the scale of justice that God expects from judges is your responsibility and the other responsibility is what people had put on you when they took to streets for judiciary’s independence,” he said.“People faced jails and harassments; I also spent 8 days in jail. People are looking at you. The biggest fraud in the history of the country was May 11’s election.”PTI chief asked the judiciary what side they are on.“We all had high hopes from you. I ask with all due respect to all judges whether you will provide the justice to people of Pakistan. Will you stand by oppressors who stole people’s mandate or with those people who want real democracy? We haven’t gotten justice yet,” he said.“In a constituency NA 118, tribunal decided that recounting will take place, a judge Justice (retd) Munir Mughal recounted votes in 15 days and revealed 90,000 votes were bogus. These people will join hands and do corruption together. These people will form their own NAB and own election commission and own caretaker government.”“Let’s resolve to take to streets, go to court and do whatever we can but we won’t let such election take place again,” he added.Talking about federal budget for the fiscal year 2014-2015, he said that this budget is business-centric, claiming that it benefits only rich.“You should all know by now that this year’s budget is only for rich people. It’s for those who earn billion of rupees and evade tax. This budget is not for labourers and farmers and poor households,” he said.“This budget is for no one other than a small segment of society. Until you all struggle for it, there will be no real democracy in the country. Those who gain from the budget are those who embezzled the money and sent it abroad. Who will bring this money back?”Addressing the young participants, he said:“Dear youth tell me will we accept this? Will we accept this system of oppression?”Just before concluding his address, he slammed Jang/Geo owner Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman saying that he separates ‘honest journalists’ from Mir Shakil.Imran Khan termed Mir Shakil as ‘pharaoh in Dubai’ and alleged that Shakil blackmails everyone for the same of money making.“This is the same Mir Shakil who blackmailed DG ISI. When I objected it, he blackmailed me, he published ads about me worth billion rupees.
