Tennis: Murray, Djokovic into Wimbledon last 16

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Defending champion Andy Murray reached the Wimbledon last 16 on Friday with a 6-2, 6-3 6-2 win over Spanish 27th seed Roberto Bautista Agut.In what will be his eighth appearance in the fourth round in nine years, Murray will face South African 20th seed Kevin Anderson for a place in the quarter-finals. Anderson became the first South African man to reach the Wimbledon fourth round for 14 years with a 4-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Italian 16th seed Fabio Fognini.Murray has made the last 16 for the loss of just 19 games, beating his previous Wimbledon best of 26 games conceded in 2010.I responded well, it's been a good first week, said Murray. I had plenty of long matches at the French Open to get me physically ready for this.On facing Anderson, the 27-year-old Murray added: He's a big guy with a big game and playing some of the best tennis of his career.I will need to be sharp to face him.Meanwhile, top seed Novak Djokovic feared his Wimbledon campaign was over when he crashed to the Centre Court grass and hurt his shoulder in his third round victory over Gilles Simon on Friday. The 2011 champion grimaced as searing pain shot through his left arm after making a diving attempt to reach a Simon drive in the sixth game of the third set.The 27-year-old required an immediate medical timeout and swallowed a painkiller before gathering his composure to complete a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win, his seventh successive victory over the Frenchman. I tried to land on my left arm. I basically had a strong impact on the shoulder. When I stood up, I felt that click or pop. I feared maybe it might be a dislocated shoulder or something like that, or joint problem, said the Serb. But luckily for me it was only an impact that had a minor effect on the joint and the muscles around, but no significant damage that can cause a bigger problem.I just came from the doctor's office, did an ultrasound. It's all looking good. They said the joint is not damaged, which is the most important thing.Djokovic, who next faces French 14th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in the quarter-finals, joked that he would have to take lessons in successful diving from coach Boris Becker, who perfected the art of the diving volley during his push to three Wimbledon titles. It was obviously a scary fall. I talked with Boris. We obviously need to work on my diving volleys, learning how to fall down on the court. I'm not very skillful in that.Djokovic said that despite the fall, he was satisfied with his performance as he reached the fourth round at the All England Club for the eighth time.In the important moments I played well and came up with the right selection of shots, even though I dropped a couple of service games. Now there are two days off so I'm going to recover and get ready, he added.Djokovic has won 10 of his 11 meetings with the big-serving Tsonga, including in the 2011 Wimbledon semi-finals and the quarter-finals at the 2012 Olympic Games, which were staged at the All England Club. But the Serb knows the flamboyant Tsonga, twice a Wimbledon semi-finalist, is a dangerous opponent on grass.

Tennis: Kvitova downs Venus in battle of former champs

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Petra Kvitova fought back to defeat Venus Williams 5-7, 7-6 (7/2), 7-5 in a titanic battle of the former champions at Wimbledon on Friday.Kvitova, the 2011 winner, and five-time champion Venus treated Centre Court fans to a high-quality third round encounter lasting two and a half hours before the Czech sixth seed finally prevailed, extending her impressive record against the 34-year-old American to four wins from their five encounters. The 24-year-old, who has reached at least the quarter-finals in each of her last four visits to Wimbledon, will play Chinese world number 61 Peng Shuai for a place in the last eight.Venus's defeat means the seven-time Grand Slam winner has failed to reach the last 16 at a major since Wimbledon in 2011.It was definitely a very tough battle. I was preparing for this because I know Venus can play very well on grass. I'm just happy I'm through, Kvitova said. When I lost the first set I was a little bit down mentally but I knew I could come back.In the third set anything can happen. It was hard to break her. I was just trying to push her and finally I did it. I was just lucky in the end.Kvitova has failed to reach a Grand Slam final since her Wimbledon triumph, with semi-final appearances at the Australian and French Opens in 2012 her best efforts. But Wimbledon's grasscourts are where the Czech feels most at home and she believes another strong run could be on the cards this year.I'm feeling well. I love to play on grass and I have great memories of 2011 here at Wimbledon, she added.I'm pretty confident but everyone is playing well at this stage. I have to focus on each point. At 34, Venus was the oldest woman left in the Wimbledon singles and, plagued for the last three years by Sjogren's Disease -- an immune system disease that leaves her battling fatigue and joint pain -- and she hasn't won a Grand Slam since securing the last of her seven major titles in 2008 at Wimbledon. In her 17th Wimbledon appearance, and her 63rd career Grand Slam appearance, Venus had made it to the last 32 at a major for the first time since the 2013 Australian Open and she gave a glimpse of her former glories to push the higher ranked Kvitova all the way. With the first set finely poised at 5-6, Kvitova was serving to force a tie-break, but Venus stepped on the gas and broke to love to take the opener.Kvitova refused to be over-powered in the second set and the two big hitters slugged it out from the baseline until the tie-break, which the Czech left-hander took thanks to an ill-timed double fault from Venus on set point. All four of their previous meetings had also gone the distance and the Czech again landed the knockout blow deep into a tense third set to clinch a memorable win.

Football: Scolari anxious ahead of Chile clash

Posted:

BELO HORIZONTE (AFP) - Brazil are feeling anxious as they head into Saturday's last 16 World Cup clash against Chile in Belo Horizonte, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari admitted. It is understandable that one should feel uncomfortable and anxious, especially when you get to the knockout stage. We can't afford to make a mistake, Scolari told his eve-of-game press conference at the Mineirao Stadium. There is a bit more anxiety, more nerves. But that is normal in any competition, not just because we are in Brazil. When I am on my own and I start to think I do get a bit nervous. However, Scolari, who has no shortage of experience of the latter stages of major international tournaments, insisted that the Selecao are coping with the huge weight of expectation and that their confidence was helped by Monday's 4-1 win against Cameroon. We had to play for our place in this round against Cameroon. These are the rules -- if we don't win, we will go out. We will run these risks all the way to the final, he added. We will not be at all proud if we get knocked out, but the mood is one of happiness and dedication as we go about our work.Scolari and his players have seen their performances constantly compared with last year's triumphant Confederations Cup campaign, but he said that Brazil were now at 80 percent of the level of 12 months ago.Now they must try to maintain their perfect World Cup record in meetings with their South American rivals, having beaten Chile three times at the competition, including a 3-0 success in the last 16 in South Africa four years ago. This Chile is the team of 2014. They are different, Scolari warned. The statistics are there to be manipulated. They don't interest us.I think that since the arrival of (Joge) Sampaoli they have a new dynamic. They are performing better and their players have adapted perfectly to his way of playing. Since the beginning they have performed at a higher level.Scolari said he would not make a decision on his line-up for the game until after Friday's training sesson, which was due to be held at a separate venue to the Mineirao in order to protect the pitch for the game.Fernandinho could come into the midfield at the expense of Paulinho while centre-back David Luiz has been nursing a back strain suffered in training on Thursday, but Brazil are hopeful he will be fit.

Golf: Tiger misses cut at injury comeback PGA event

Posted:

BETHESDA (AFP) - Tiger Woods struggled to a four-over par 75 and missed the cut Friday at the National, a frustrating return from a three-month layoff as he looks ahead to July's British Open.It was only the 10th time Woods has missed the cut in a US PGA Tour event since he turned professional in 1996.Woods, a 14-time major winner chasing the all-time record of 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus, finished 36 holes at Congressional Country Club on seven-over 149 in his first competitive rounds since undergoing back surgery March 31 to relieve a pinched nerve. He was four strokes beyond the projected cut line to the low 60 and those tied from a field of 120 at the $6.5 million event, which benefits Woods' charity foundation.Woods had not missed the last 36 holes of a PGA event since the 2012 Greenbrier Classic, two weeks before he shared third at the British Open. While his personal best is a PGA record of 142 events in a row without missing a cut, his run of 26 made cuts in a row that ended on Friday ranked fourth on the active list.Woods, who has not won a major title since the 2008 US Open, had not played competitively until this week since March 9 at Doral, where he fired a 78 for his career-worst final-round score. The 38-year-old American was trying to shake the rust off his game ahead of the British Open in three weeks at Royal Liverpool, where he won the Claret Jug in 2006.Three weeks after that will come the year's final major tournament, the PGA Championship at Valhalla, where Woods won the PGA crown in 2000.Woods was inconsistent Friday, seldom able to combine solid tee shots, approaches and putts although he was strong at moments in all three areas. He parred the first three holes after hitting into the rough, found the fairway at four but missed a seven-foot birdie putt, then needed two shots to escape a greenside bunker at the fifth, making a double bogey.Woods had a 60-foot eagle putt at the par-5 sixth but settled for par and left a seven-foot par putt on the edge of the cup for bogey at eight.Woods rallied with a 26-foot birdie putt at the ninth and a 12-foot birdie putt at the par-3 10th, moving within one stroke of the cut line. But Woods made bogeys on the next four holes to doom any chance of reaching the weekend.Woods hit into the trees off the tee at 11 and 12, missed the green at the par-3 13th and found greenside rough at the 14th and was unable to rescue par with his putter. It was his longest bogey run since this year's third round at Torrey Pines when he suffered five in a row.Woods dropped his approach to two feet at the par-5 16th and made a birdie but missed a four-foot birdie putt at 17 and also settled for par at the last.Woods, a winner at Congressional in 2009 and 2012, has fallen from first to fifth in the world rankings during his layoff.Woods, whose 79 career titles are three shy of matching Sam Snead's PGA record, has not won since last August's World Golf Championships event in Akron, Ohio.

Motorcycling: Espargaro on pole for Dutch MotoGP

Posted:

ASSEN (AFP) - Spain's Aleix Espargaro took pole position for Saturday's Dutch MotoGP in difficult qualifying conditions, finishing ahead of championship leader Marc Marquez. It is the first-ever pole position for the Yamaha rider, who made his intentions clear on Thursday by setting a blistering fastest lap ever recorded at the current Assen track.Espargaro will be aiming to deny the apparently unstoppable Marquez a record eighth victory and the chance to stretch his perfect 175-point tally so far this season.Typically unpredictable Dutch weather struck as the second group of racers set out for qualifying undedr a light shower. The changing conditions seemed to throw veteran Valentino Rossi of Italy, who is currently second in the standings, 58 points adrift of Marquez.Rossi could only manage 12th place on the grid, meaning he'll start in the fourth row on Saturday and faces a mighty battle for a podium position. Espargaro, who set a time of 1min 38.789sec on Friday outpaced Marquez by a comfortable 1.405sec in the changing and difficult weather, with another Spaniard, long-time Grand Prix campaigner Dani Pedrosa, third, 1.943sec off the pace.I'm really happy, we have been waiting for this, Espargaro said, but he agreed that the unpredictable weather would make for a very difficult race on Saturday.I prefer it dry. (When dry) we have a very good pace, he said. Marquez also warned the weather could play a major role, with cloudy conditions predicted and the possibility of a few showers. We are hoping for dry conditions because that would be better, the reigning world champion said.If it's wet, it will be very, very interesting.Third placed Pedrosa, himself a former 250cc world champion, said riders were faced with tough choices between opting for wet or dry tyres. It's been a while since we've been riding on wet tyres, added Pedrosa, who won the first of his 47 Grand Prix races as a 16-year-old on the track in 2002.Italy's Andrea Iannone will lead the second row, finishing fourth fastest at 1.997sec on a Ducati, with Britain's Cal Crutchlow on another Ducati alongside him at 2.007sec.In the Moto2 Grand Prix, current leader Spain's Esteve Rabat took pole position on his Kalex with a time of 1min 37.311sec.Rabat, who at 149 points is 34 points ahead of Finland's Mika Kallio and aiming for a third consecutive win, finished his fasted lap just 0.151sec ahead of Swiss racer Dominique Aegerter on a Suter at 1min 37.462sec.Earlier, Australian championship leader Jack Miller sped to a fourth pole position in the Moto3 Grand Prix with a time of 1min 42.240sec.Miller, who has so far notched up 117 points, finished his fastest lap just 0.116 ahead of Spaniard Alex Marquez on a Honda.Finnish rider Niklas Ajo on a Husqvarna was third in 1min 42.430sec.The Dutch TT is run on a Saturday instead of a Sunday because of religious reasons in the strongly Protestant Netherlands.

Oil prices mixed as Iraq keeps markets on edge

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Global oil prices traded in mixed fashion ahead of the weekend Friday, with Brent slightly higher as traders watched developments in the jihadist-led offensive in Iraqi, OPEC's second-largest oil producer.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for August settled 10 cents lower at $105.74 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The European benchmark, Brent crude for delivery in August, rose nine cents to close at $113.30 a barrel in London. We see something of an uneasy balance in the Brent crude oil market, with worries over the Sunni insurgency and political problems offset for now by indications that crude oil production from the south remains on plan, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.A week ago, the pair of futures contracts closed at nine-month highs. WTI prices fell over the week by 1.4 percent and Brent shed 1.3 percent. On Friday, Iraq's top Shiite cleric urged the country's leaders to unite, after Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki conceded political measures were needed to defeat the Sunni Arab militant offensive that has killed more than 1,000 people and overrun major parts of five provinces since June 9.The militants have not reached the Shiite-controlled south, the center of the country's export oil industry. If the fighting between Sunni militants and Iraq government forces is restricted to the north of Baghdad, supply disruption fears would ease, said Inenco analyst Nadina Ball.

Dollar slips vs. euro after dim US economic data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar slipped against the euro Friday after dreary data on the US economy this week had traders expecting the Federal Reserve will keep ultra-low interest rates well into 2015.On Thursday US consumer spending data for May showed a mere 0.2 percent increase from April, but adjusted for inflation, spending actually fell 0.1 percent.News of the weakness in consumer spending, the main driver of the US economy, came a day after the government slashed its first-quarter gross domestic product estimate, to a sharp 2.9 percent economic contraction. The GDP report, then yesterday's softer than expected spending figures, will do little to pressure Fed officials to begin raising borrowing costs any time before mid-2015, said Omer Esiner of Commonwealth Foreign Exchange.Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management noted that most market participants did not expect the Fed to raise interest rates until the second half of 2015. But after this week's reports, the odds of a rate hike in June 2015 fell to 50 percent from 60 percent a week ago.Forex traders awaited the European Central Bank's next monetary policy meeting on Thursday. Earlier this month the ECB took unprecedented actions to bolster growth and prevent deflation in the eurozone. While the euro has clearly been stabilizing this past week, we do not expect the common currency to develop very strong upside momentum in the next few days, especially ahead of the ECB meeting next week, said Vasileios Gkionakis of UniCredit.

Pakistan hopes for Aamer's early return

Posted:

KARACHI (AFP) - Pakistan cricket authorities on Friday said they hoped banned paceman Mohammad Aamer would return to domestic cricket before the end of his five-year ban for spot-fixing.Aamer, now 22, was issued with the worldwide ban on playing cricket after he pleaded guilty to orchestrating deliberate no-balls in the 2010 Lord's Test against England in return for money. In February 2011 he was banned from the sport for a minimum of five years by the International Cricket Council (ICC), together with then-Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt and pace partner Mohammad Asif. The trio were jailed in the UK in November 2011, along with their agent Mazhar Majeed.Aamer was ordered to serve six months in a rehabilitation centre but was released after three months.Aamer is due to complete his ban in September 2015, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) hopes its effort to get him back early will pay off.PCB chairman Najam Sethi last year requested the ICC to relax some of the conditions of Aamer's ban to allow him to take part in domestic matches. That prompted the ICC to form a committee to look into the matter as it agreed to review its anti-corruption code which carries a minimum five-year ban for offenders.Tribunal chief QC Michael Beloff termed the punishment excessive when announcing Aamer's ban in 2011.PCB said the work on ICC code has progressed well enough to raise hopes for Aamer's return. The work on the drafting of the new ICC anti-corruption code has substantially progressed, with a draft clause inserted into the code permitting a banned player to be involved in domestic matches prior to the end of his ban period, said a PCB release. The anti-corruption code will now be placed before the ICC board for approval soon after which the PCB will be in a position to make an application for Aamer, it added. At the time he was banned, Aamer was described as the hottest property in international cricket by former Pakistan captain Imran Khan.He became the youngest player ever to take 50 Test wickets and guided Pakistan to a 1-1 series draw against Australia when the two teams played in England in June 2010. The progress on ICC amendments to ICC's anti-corruption code is very encouraging and is yet another step closer to the early entry of Aamer in cricket, the PCB said.Aamer said he was anxiously waiting to be allowed to return.I am thankful to the PCB for their efforts and am anxiously waiting to return to play for Pakistan, Aamer told AFP earlier this year.

Rain restricts WIndies to 169 for two against Kiwis

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Steady rainfall limited play on the second day of the third and final Test between the West Indies and New Zealand to just 33.2 overs with the home side reaching 169 for two in reply to the tourists first innings total of 293 at Kensington Oval on Friday.West Indies added 137 runs for the loss of openers Chris Gayle and Kraigg Brathwaite in the playing time available under overcast skies. When the weather closed in after 15 minutes play in the post-lunch session, Kirk Edwards (42 not out) and Darren Bravo (8 not out) were seeking to build on the promising position.More showers are forecast on the scheduled third day on Saturday, presenting a challenge to both sides to play the sort of positive, adventurous cricket in the time available over the remaining three days to force a result with the series now locked at 1-1.Brathwaite emerged as the unlikely hero of the morning, stroking his way to 68 to follow up his Man of the Match innings of 129 in the second Test in Trinidad the previous week before falling to fast-medium bowler Neil Wagner just before lunch. He put on 79 for the first wicket with Chris Gayle and continued to score freely in another useful second-wicket stand with Kirk Edwards that produced 74 runs before a mis-timed off-drive was well held by Tim Southee diving low to his left at cover.New Zealands first wicket of the morning came with the introduction into the attack of off-spinner Mark Craig, who induced the belligerent Gayle into a lofted hit, and Mark Rutherford judged the steepling catch well to send the dangerous left-hander back to the pavilion for 42.Like Brathwaite, whose innings spanned 116 deliveries and included ten fours, Edwards continued in the positive vein that brought him 55 in the first innings at Queens Park Oval.He struck Craig for six over long-off to set the tone for his innings, prompting New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum to introduce part-time spinner Kane Williamson, whose bowling action was reported as suspect by the umpires during the second Test.Williamson almost had immediate success with Edwards surviving a confident appeal for a catch at the wicket.McCullum appeared to request a television review of the umpires not out verdict but immediately cancelled it on consultation with his team-mates.

Until we have depoliticized police, incidents like Model Town tragedy will keep taking place. If I come in government in Punjab, I’ll show you how to correct the police.”He also criticized Nawaz Sharif for telling Khan not to derail the democracy.“Is this democracy where your own family members hold the key government posts?” he asked.“You say development is happening; no one sees development…maybe the development took place in your pockets.”He asked if will strengthening electoral system derail the democracy or strengthen it. “Democracy will strengthen and mafia will derail,” he said.“Huge election frauds have been found in the constituencies that have been probed until now.
