Football: Spurs stun Madrid, join Man City in last 16

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Brilliant Tottenham Hotspur took Real Madrid apart in a 3-1 win over the reigning champions on Wednesday as they clinched their place in the Champions League last 16 along with Manchester City.Dele Alli starred with a brace for Tottenham with Christian Eriksen also scoring before Cristiano Ronaldos late consolation. The result ensured that Mauricio Pochettinos side are through from Group H with two games to spare, while Real will have to wait to join them.We dont want to just compete with these teams -- we want to beat them. Im happy to get two goals, but more importantly it was a win, Alli told BT Sport.Tottenham profited from an officiating error to go in front on 27 minutes as Kieran Trippier should have been flagged offside before he crossed for Alli to score.Alli netted again on 56 minutes when his shot beat Kiko Casilla with the aid of a deflection off Sergio Ramos.Eriksen made it 3-0 at the end of a counter-attack on 65 minutes, before Real reduced the deficit late on as Ronaldo scored his sixth goal in the competition this season. This was Reals first group-stage defeat in five years and, following a shock La Liga loss at Girona at the weekend, the pressure is building on coach Zinedine Zidane.Nevertheless, a win at APOEL later this month will do for the 12-time champions to qualify after the Cypriot side held Borussia Dortmund 1-1 in Germany.Raphael Guerreiro gave Dortmund a first-half lead but they are still looking for a win in Europe this season after Mickael Pote levelled for APOEL on 51 minutes.Manchester City continued their sensational form as they saw off Napoli 4-2 in Italy to make it four wins from four in Group F and advance to the knockout phase for the fifth season running.Lorenzo Insigne put the Serie A leaders in front, but Nicolas Otamendi headed City level and his fellow centre-back John Stones then scored with a header that went in off the underside of the bar.A Jorginho penalty restored parity again, but Sergio Aguero made it 3-2 and Raheem Sterling completed the scoring.Agueros strike allowed him to become Citys all-time leading scorer on 178 goals, passing the old mark of 177 set by Eric Brook in the 1930s.What he has achieved has made him a legend, hes gone down in history, so I would tell him to enjoy, said City coach Pep Guardiola of Aguero, the former son-in-law of Argentina and Napoli great Diego Maradona.Shakhtar Donetsk need just a draw in Naples in three weeks to go through too after beating Feyenoord 3-1.Nicolai Jorgensen headed the Dutch champions into the lead in Kharkiv only for Facundo Ferreyra to equalise.Marlos, the Brazil-born Ukraine international, then scored twice to secure the victory as Feyenoord are eliminated.Meanwhile Liverpool moved clear at the top of Group E with a comfortable 3-0 win over Maribor at Anfield. There would be no repeat of their 7-0 romp in the reverse fixture in Slovenia as the Reds had to wait until the 49th minute for Mohamed Salah to give them the lead.James Milner then saw his penalty tipped onto the post but he set up Emre Can to double Liverpools lead before substitute Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring.Liverpool are a point clear of Sevilla, who beat Spartak Moscow 2-1 in Spain, Clement Lenglet and Ever Banega with their goals before Ze Luis pulled one back.Earlier, Besiktas missed a chance to secure their place in the last 16 as they drew 1-1 with Monaco in Istanbul, Cenk Tosuns penalty cancelling out the opener from Rony Lopes. The Turkish champions would have been through with a win but will now hope for a draw at home to second-placed Porto to qualify next time out.Porto beat RB Leipzig 3-1 in Portugal, with Hector Herrera, Danilo Pereira and Maxi Pereira scoring their goals as Timo Werner replied for the Germans.Monaco, semi-finalists last season, are bottom and look unlikely to make it through.

Football: 'Legend' Aguero hits record goal as Man City reach last 16

Posted:

NAPLES (AFP) - Sergio Aguero became Manchester Citys all-time record scorer and was described as a legend by coach Pep Guardiola whose side booked their place in the Champions League last-16 with a 4-2 win at Napoli on Wednesday. The 29-year-old Argentine beat the old mark of 177 set by Eric Brook during the 1930s when he netted Citys third goal in Naples after 69 minutes. What he has achieved has made him a legend, hes gone down in history, so I would tell him to enjoy, said Guardiola. The Premier League leaders had needed just a point to seal their berth in the knockout rounds for the fifth consecutive year, with two games to go.But Citys fourth victory out of four in Group F confirmed their progress with 12 points.Napoli are third, six points behind Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk who beat Dutch side Feyenoord 3-1, and are close to elimination from the elite European competition.City fought back despite a dominant early display from the Serie A leaders in their San Paolo Stadium stronghold before defender Faouzi Ghoulam went off with a knee injury.Im really happy were in the last 16. It was a great victory tonight, said Guardiola. They completely destroyed us in the first 20 minutes especially Ghoulam and I wish him well. We suffered a lot but our players showed personality. The point is how in the bad moments the team react and they did really well. The level of football for a spectator was just amazing all I could say was wow.Lorenzo Insigne had opened for Napoli after 21 minutes with defender Nicolas Otamendi pulling City level on 35 minutes.Citys John Stones edged the visitors ahead three minutes after the break. But to the delight of the home crowd Jorginho converted a penalty to make it 2-2 after 62 minutes.Aguero then fired in the third seven minutes later after Leroy Sane broke up the pitch. The ball eventually fell to the Argentine who scored his record-breaking goal before Raheem Sterling put the icing on the cake in injury time.Guardiola made two changes from last weekends Premier League 3-2 win at West Brom with starts for Ilkay Gundogan and Danilo.Dries Mertens, Jorginho, Allan and Marek Hamsik started for Napoli as they looked to avenge their 2-1 loss in Manchester two weeks ago.Napoli started brightly with captain Hamsik and Mertens both having early shots on goal but Ederson cleared. But Insigne sent the crowd wild when he picked up a brilliant Mertens cross to fire past Ederson. The result is unfair considering the performance we put in, said Insigne. There are some regrets, as we put the best team in Europe under pressure for a good long while.Maurizio Sarris Napoli suffered a blow when Ghoulam hobbled off with a knee injury midway through the first half with Christian Maggio coming on.The hosts were clearly shaken by the Algerian defenders departure, Arguero went close for City with a deflected shot but defender Otamendi quickly headed in the equaliser after 34 minutes.Ghoulams departure hurt us, said Sarri. But we showed we are getting closer to these top teams.Stones powered in his header after 48 minutes for a 2-1 lead but Jorginho levelled from the spot just after the hour from the penalty spot when Sane upended Raul Albiol. After Agueros headline-grabbing strike, Sterling got the fourth in the dying minutes following a Kevin De Bruyne cross as Napoli suffered their first loss at home to a Premier League team.

Muslim countries push UN to speak out on Myanmar abuses

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Muslim countries led by Saudi Arabia want the United Nations to denounce serious rights abuses in Myanmar and demand an end to the military campaign against the Rohingya, according to a draft resolution seen by AFP on Wednesday. In one of the worst refugee crises in decades, more than 600,000 Muslim Rohingya have fled an army crackdown in Myanmars Rakhine state since late August. The draft resolution introduced this week to the General Assemblys human rights committee said UN member-states were highly alarmed by the outbreak of violence and further alarmed by the disproportionate use of force by the Myanmar forces against the Rohingya. The non-binding measure is expected to come up for a vote in the committee around November 14 and be discussed in the assembly a month later.Drafted by the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the proposed resolution marks the return of Myanmar to the rights agenda at the United Nations after a one-year break.Last year, the European Union decided against presenting a measure criticizing Myanmars rights record for the first time in 15 years after recognizing progress under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi.Together with a separate draft resolution now before the Security Council, the measure reflects growing impatience with the Myanmar authorities as the Rohingya continue to flee across the border to Bangladesh.Diplomats, however, say China -- a supporter of Myanmars former ruling junta -- is resisting a push by Britain and France for a council response to the crisis.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has called for an end to the attacks, is expected to press for action when he joins leaders of the Southeast Asian (ASEAN) bloc at a summit in the Philippines next week.Myanmars government says its operations are aimed at rooting out Rohingya militants who staged attacks on police posts in late August. The draft resolution calls on Myanmar authorities to end the ongoing military operations that have led to the systematic violations and abuse of human rights of persons belonging to the Rohingya community. It calls on the government to allow access for aid workers to Rakhine state, ensure the return of all refugees and grant full citizenship rights to the Rohingya.Myanmars Rohingya have faced decades of discrimination in the Buddhist-majority country and have been denied citizenship since 1982, which has effectively rendered them stateless.A recent report by the UN human rights office accused Myanmar of seeking to permanently expel the Rohingya by planting land mines at the border with Bangladesh where the refugees are sheltering.UN rights officials spoke to refugees who gave accounts of soldiers surrounding homes and firing indiscriminately as residents ran for their lives, and of uniformed men gang-raping women and girls.

Raza, Moor keep Zimbabwe hopes alive against Windies

Posted:

BULAWAYO (AFP) - An unbroken partnership of 94 between Sikandar Raza and Peter Moor ensured that Zimbabwe lived to fight another day in the second Test after the West Indies delivered some heavy blows at Queens Sports Club on Wednesday.Raza and Moor came together with Zimbabwe reeling on 46 for four in their second innings, still needing 76 runs to make the West Indies bat again.By the close of the fourth day they had carried the home side to 140 for four to claim an 18-run lead, with Raza adding his second half-century in a match where he has also claimed a five-wicket haul. The partnership kept Zimbabwes slim hopes of winning the Test and squaring the two-match series alive, with 92 overs due to be bowled on the final day.Weve got to get through a session and get ourselves into a position where we can maybe consider giving them a target, Zimbabwe coach Heath Streak said. But its very tough, especially with the deficit weve had to make up, and with the pitch being so slow.Zimbabwes chances of ending a 10-match losing streak in Tests were badly dented by a 212-run partnership between Shane Dowrich and Jason Holder -- a record for the eighth wicket for the West Indies. The pair had come together on the third afternoon with the West Indies on 230 for seven, still trailing by 76 runs, and their stand allowed the visitors to eventually post 448 all out on the fourth morning.Dowrichs 103 was his first century in Test cricket, while Holders 110 was his second.Shane has not had the best time in the recent past and was in need of a score, so it was good to be out there with him, said Holder. We were under pressure with the Zimbabweans bowling well. We really needed a partnership to get back in the game and it was down to me and Shane to put one up.Holder enjoyed some fortune, surviving a plumb lbw shout when he was on 11 as well as being dropped on 78, leaving Zimbabwe to rue their missed opportunities. They batted really well and put us under pressure, and we didnt help ourselves with a few dropped catches, said Streak.Weve got ourselves to blame for giving them that lead, but weve just got to deal with where were at now. After spending 178 overs in the field, Zimbabwes punch-drunk top order were easily knocked over as Kemar Roach grabbed two wickets in his opening spell. But Raza made an unbeaten 58 and Moor batted 152 deliveries for his 39 not out to ensure that the series, which the West Indies lead 1-0, will go into a final day.

Australia's Pattinson set for spinal surgery

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Injury-prone Australia quick bowler James Pattinson is set to have spinal surgery in a last-ditch effort to fix a recurring problem that has dogged him for years.A lower back stress fracture kept the 27-year-old out of Australias recent tour to Bangladesh and he will also miss the upcoming Ashes series against England.Cricket Australias sports science chief Alex Kountouris said they were talking with several New Zealand specialists, including one who helped save paceman Shane Bonds career.Hes got four stress fractures that havent healed since his teenage years, Kountouris told The Australian newspaper Wednesday of Pattinson. What hes doing is getting bone stress on the healthy part of the bone. And that one part of the bone keeps breaking.CA medical staff have yet to sign off on spinal surgery as the best option, but were a long way down the track of looking at it.It doesnt sound like theres a lot to lose, said Kountouris.Theres obviously some complications that could possibly happen, theres concerns with any sort of surgery, but thats probably the way were going to go.Injuries have limited Pattinson to 17 Tests since his 2011 debut and he has not played since July 1 when he represented Nottinghamshire in the final of Englands one-day tournament against Surrey at Lords.

Sharma, Dhawan gift India first T20 win against Kiwis

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - A record opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan powered India to a 53-run win over New Zealand in the first Twenty20 international in New Delhi on Wednesday. The pair put on 158 runs - Indias best for any wicket - to take the hosts to 202-3 and then restricted the Kiwis to 149-8 and take lead in the three-match series.Notching up their maiden win over New Zealand in the format, the Indian team gave a fitting farewell to veteran paceman Ashish Nehra, who called time on his playing career.Nehra, 38, who retired after an injury-plagued 18-year-old career, went wicketless but was carried by his teammates in a lap of honour at his home ground Feroz Shah Kotla. It was Dhawan, who hit a career-best 80, and Sharma, who also made 80, stole the show. They surpassed the 136-run opening stand between Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup.Very clinical performance from the whole team. The wicket I felt was a bit damp. But the two guys at the top of the order set up the platform for us and were outstanding, skipper Virat Kohli said.Dhawan wanted to do well in this format as his record is good in ODIs...This knock is a testimony to the fact of what he can do, Kohli said of Dhawan, who received the man of the match award.Indian batsmen also benefited from a sloppy effort by New Zealand fielders with Dhawan, on eight, and Sharma, on 16, surviving dropped chances.Kohli also got a reprieve on eight before going on to make an unbeaten 11-ball 26.Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi claimed two wickets in an over including Dhawans prized scalp but the damage had already been done. While the left-handed Dhawan smashed 10 fours and 2 sixes in his 52-ball knock, Sharma also entertained the raucous home crowd during his 55-ball stay. One (thing) that stands out is the fielding. We were very poor there. I dont think we can use the ground conditions as an excuse, skipper Kane Williamson said.We couldnt quite use the spinners the way we would have liked to, which was to control the rate of scoring, but they bowled very well, he added. In reply, the New Zealand innings could never take off after losing their openers for just 18 runs inside four overs.Martin Guptill, who scored four, fell to leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal while Colin Munro was bowled for seven by a superb yorker from fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.Williamson tried to revive the innings with his 24-ball 28 but Hardik Pandya got him caught behind to spell trouble for the visitors.Left-arm spinner Axar Patel struck twice in an over to send back Tom Bruce and Colin De Grandhomme as the wheels came off the Kiwi chase.Tom Latham top-scored with a valiant 39 before becoming Chahals second victim. The second T20 is scheduled on Saturday in Rajkot.

World Cup winner Nehra calls it a day

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - World Cup winning fast bowler Ashish Nehra ended his career with Indias Twenty20 win over New Zealand on Wednesday. Now 38, Nehra bid farewell at his home Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi after not being part of the team for a T20 series against Australia last month. The left-arm quick had been in and out of skipper Virat Kohlis T20 plans in recent months. He last played a one day international in 2011 and a Test match in 2004. His career in the longer versions of the game was curtailed by the injuries. He went wicketless in Wednesdays match to return figures of 0-29 in his four overs but was carried by his teammates in a lap of honour.I will once again repeat that it is always good to retire when people are asking why, rather than why not, he told reporters in a marathon press conference that lasted 30 minutes.I consider myself lucky to sign off at my homeground. I am emotional but happy to play for almost 19 years as a fast bowler for Team india, the lanky paceman added.Nehra bowled the first and the last over in the New Zealand chase as India won the match by 53 runs after posting a mammoth 202-3.Nehra collected 157 ODI wickets plus 44 Test and 34 T20 scalps during his 18-year career, since making his Test debut in 1999 against Sri Lanka in Colombo. He went under the knife 12 times during his career mainly because of the effects of his unwieldy action -- called mechanically incorrect by batting great VVS Laxman -- which added to his pace, accuracy and unpredictability. He could whip up speeds up to 140 kilometers (85 miles) per hour. His run-up and a near-tumbling follow through was a treat for fans along with his animated gestures on the cricket field.Nehra was a part of the Indian squad that won the 2011 World Cup in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The Delhi native was also a vital part of Indias 2003 World Cup campaign in South Africa, where the team ended up as runners-up to Australia. At the peak of his powers, Nehra was often called upon to bowl the final over in a tense encounter. He is best remembered however for his career-best ODI figures of 6-23 against England at Durban during the 2003 tournament.Nehra performed brilliantly in Indias 2011 World Cup semi final win over arch-rivals Pakistan, returning figures of 2-33 at the Mohali Cricket Ground. The paceman was unlucky to miss the final against Sri Lanka after he fractured his finger during an unsuccessful attempt to catch Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi.Nehra has also finished his Indian Premier League (IPL) playing career after successful stints with Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.I am content with my career. As an opitmist I will always look at the brighter side and look forward to the rest of my life which I believe would be better, he said. Now I can pass my experience to upcoming fast bowlers. I have seen failure and maybe can help others to improve, he added. He has said he is weighing up coaching roles in domestic cricket and commentary stints as part of his retirement plans.
