West Indies win series after drawn Zimbabwe Test

Posted:

BULAWAYO (AFP) - An obstinate stand of 91 between Regis Chakabva and Graeme Cremer secured Zimbabwes first draw in Test cricket since 2005, leaving the West Indies to settle for a 1-0 series victory. The West Indies were on course to win the second Test on the final day when Sikandar Razas dismissal for 89 left Zimbabwe on 210 for seven, leading by just 88 runs with nearly 64 overs still left to play. But Chakabva and Cremer combined in an unbroken stand for the eighth wicket that chewed up nearly 50 overs, leaving West Indies coach Stuart Law frustrated at the slow, placid nature of a Queens Sports Club pitch that permitted just 27 wickets in five days.Id just like to see a more even contest between bat and ball, said Law. There are a lot of people saying that Test cricket is dying, and on a pitch like this it is.Both sides had an outside chance of forcing a result when Zimbabwe went into the final day on 140 for four in their second innings, leading by 18 runs. But Zimbabwes hopes narrowed when they lost Peter Moor for 42 in the fourth over of the day, particularly with man of the match Raza tiring from his efforts. The allrounder became just the second player after South Africas Jacques Kallis to score 80 or more runs in both innings of a Test and take a five-wicket haul, but was ultimately undone by a vicious inswinger from Jason Holder after lunch.Chakabva and Cremer fought back, but the latter enjoyed some fortune. Three times the West Indies had appeals against Cremer turned down by the umpires, only for replays to suggest the batsman should have been given out.Having used up their two reviews, there was nothing the visitors could do about it.It costs a lot of money to set up the cameras and have the technology available to us, and to only be able to use it for two incorrect appeals, I think is ludicrous, said Law.With the lead edging past 150 after tea, Zimbabwe gave some thought to declaring and attempting to gain a share of the series, but thought better of it.We know its quite hard to take 10 wickets in 50 overs, let alone 30, so after Raza got out we almost had to shut up shop and just take overs out of the game to make sure we couldnt lose the Test match, said Cremer.Zimbabwe went on to score 301 for seven before the two captains shook hands on the draw. The West Indies were able to celebrate their first Test series win under captain Holder, who took up the role more than two years ago. There was only one team out there today trying to win it, and unfortunately we werent able to do it. I cant fault the commitment of our players, said Law.Everybody has worked really hard to get this 1-0 victory and were going to celebrate this series win.

Qualcomm sues Apple for breach of software license contract

Posted:

(Reuters) - Qualcomm Inc has sued Apple Inc, alleging that it violated a software license contract to benefit rival chipmaker Intel Corp for making broadband modems, the latest salvo in their longstanding dispute.Qualcomm said in a lawsuit filed in California state court in San Diego on Wednesday that Apple used its commercial leverage to demand unprecedented access to the chipmaker’s highly confidential software, including source code.Apple, which could not be reached immediately for comment, started using Intel’s broadband modem chips in the iPhone 7.In its complaint, Qualcomm alleged that Apple was required under its contract to ensure that Apple engineers working with Qualcomm did not communicate details about Qualcomm chips to Apple engineers working on competing chips from Intel.Qualcomm alleged that in July, Apple emailed Qualcomm to request “highly confidential” information about how its chips work on an unnamed wireless carrier’s network. Apple copied an Intel engineer in the email for information, Qualcomm alleged. In another instance, Qualcomm alleged that an Apple engineer working on a competing chip asked an Apple engineer working with Qualcomm to get technical information from Qualcomm.Reuters had reported earlier this week that Apple would drop Qualcomm’s chips altogether from its iPhones and iPads beginning next year.

Myanmar Rohingya must return as citizens: UN refugee chief

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Myanmar must grant citizenship to the Rohingya to allow hundreds of thousands of people from the Muslim minority to return to Rakhine state from where they were driven by an army campaign, the UN refugee chief said Thursday. These people cannot remain stateless because this statelessness exposes them to discrimination and abuse, as has been the case in the past, said Filippo Grandi, the UN high commission for refugees.More than 600,000 Rohingya have fled Rakhine since late August during military operations that the United Nations has described as ethnic cleansing and the worlds most acute refugee crisis.Myanmar authorities say the security crackdown was in response to attacks by Rohingya militants on police posts in late August. For people to go back and for this return to be sustainable, you need to address the very complex issue of citizenship, Grandi told reporters after addressing the Security Council. No return will be sustainable ... if that issue is not unblocked. For decades, the Rohingya have faced discrimination in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where they are denied citizenship and denigrated as illegal Bengali immigrants.Aside from recognizing the Rohingya as citizens, the government must also agree on a development program for Rakhine state, one of the poorest in the country, said Grandi. The violence has to stop and humanitarian aid workers must be given access to Rakhine to reach those in need after villages were torched and remaining residents face hunger, Grandi said.Myanmar authorities are in talks with the UN World Food Programme to resume food deliveries in Rakhine, but details on the relief effort have yet to ironed out, he added.Grandi said the Myanmar government had invited the UN refugee agency to a meeting to discuss the plight of the Rohingya and he expressed hope that this will lead to more cooperation. In Washington, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that he will travel to Myanmar next week, becoming the most senior US official to visit since the start of the Rohingya crisis.

Three dead in Colorado Walmart store shooting police

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Three people were fatally shot at a Walmart store in Colorado on Wednesday evening, police said, in a country that is struggling with frequent deadly gun violence. There are (3) confirmed dead, the Thornton Police Department said on Twitter, raising an earlier toll after a woman whom it earlier announced was transported from the scene died. There is currently NO one in custody, said the department, appealing for anyone with information to call.Last month, a gunman in Las Vegas killed 58 people in the countrys worst mass shooting in recent history.More than 33,000 gun-related deaths occur annually in the United States, according to a study released this month. While US politicians are quick to enact sweeping policies, including military action, in response to terrorism attacks, authorities have taken little concrete action to address the far-deadlier epidemic of domestic gun violence. The inaction is largely due to the powerful National Rifle Association gun lobby -- and Republicans who rely on it for funding and other support -- categorically rejecting gun control measures.

Trump calls for death penalty for NY attacker

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - President Donald Trump called Thursday for the man charged over the New York truck attack to be executed, after investigators said he confessed to being inspired by Islamic State group propaganda.Trump had earlier said he was considering sending Sayfullo Saipov, 29, to the militarys notorious Guantanamo Bay detention center, but backed off the idea in a blast of early morning tweets calling for the death penalty.Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system, Trump tweeted. There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed. Should move fast. DEATH PENALTYSaipov appeared in a New York federal courtroom Wednesday on terrorism charges after he allegedly drove a rented pickup truck down a mile-long stretch of bike path Tuesday in Lower Manhattans West Side, where children and their parents were preparing to celebrate Halloween.Eight people were killed, five of them friends from Argentina celebrating the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation.A 31-year-old Belgian mother was also among the dead and 12 other people were wounded in the worst attack in New York since the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda hijackings.Police shot Saipov in the abdomen after he allegedly ran over his victims and exited his truck brandishing fake guns.Federal prosecutors have announced two charges so far: provision of material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization, and violence and destruction of motor vehicles. The material support charge carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, but federal prosecutors can also seek the death penalty, although a capital punishment case would be extremely rare in New York. The complaint said Saipov, an Uber driver and father-of-three who moved to the United States in 2010, confessed to acting in the name of IS and felt good about what he had done, even demanding to hang an IS flag in his hospital room.NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY Trump wrote on Twitter late Wednesday.Trumps Guantanamo tweets reflect a reality at the naval base: If Saipov were sent there his trial would likely be delayed by many years.Since the first inmates arrived in 2002, only eight have been convicted in the military commissions there, according to Human Rights Watch.Three of those convictions were overturned and another three were partially invalidated, and the entire legal process has been beset by endless challenges and allegations of government misconduct.Saipov deliberately intended to attack on Halloween, determined to kill as many people as possible and believing that the streets would be more crowded for the holiday, authorities said.A year ago, he first planned an attack in the United States, before settling two months ago on a vehicle strike, prosecutors said.He appears to have followed almost exactly to a T the instructions that ISIS has put out in its social media channels before with instructions to their followers on how to carry out such an attack, senior police officer John Miller said.He was found in possession of knives, a stun gun in his vehicle and two cell phones contained thousands of IS propaganda images and dozens of videos that showed IS fighters killing prisoners, prosecutors said. While investigators are still working round the clock, it appears Saipov only became radicalized after moving to America.
