Story of Hitler's rise wins France's top book award

Posted:

(AFP) - Two books about the Nazis took France’s biggest literary prizes on Monday, with Eric Vuillard’s story of how German industry and finance backed Adolf Hitler winning the top Prix Goncourt.L’ordre du jour, Agenda in English, had been among the favourites for the Goncourt prize -- the most prestigious in the French-speaking world.Vuillard, 49, said he was taken aback on hearing he won for his elegant, 160-page book which charts how the financial support of German industrialists was crucial in Hitler’s push for power. One is always surprised, sometimes fatally, he told reporters at the Paris restaurant where the winner was announced.Front cover of L’ordre du jour (in English Agenda) won the prestigious Goncourt prize. Photo: AmazonAsked whether the book was a warning for our own populist times, the writer said he wanted to set out how the elites slid into a situation where they compromised themselves. His novelistic account of Hitler’s rise, which sticks doggedly to the facts, turns on a secret meeting in February 1933 between Hitler and the heads of Krupp, Siemens, Opel, IG Farben and other major industrial groups where they agreed to bankroll his election campaign. As they left the room, Hermann Goering laughed, These elections will be the last for 10 years and maybe for a century. The Renaudot award, often seen as a consolation prize for those not shortlisted for the Goncourt, went to The Disappearance of Josef Mengele, another book about the Nazis which walked the tightrope of historical fact.Journalist Olivier Guez spent years retracing the secret post-Holocaust life of the SS doctor, notorious as the Angel of Death at the Auschwitz concentration camp for his often lethal experiments on prisoners.Mediocrity of evilMengele managed to escape to Argentina and even got a West German passport in his own name in the 1950s so he could return for a holiday in his hometown.I wanted to understand what is left of a person after they have done that kind of evil, Guez told AFP after he won.I wanted to know what Mengele’s life was like afterwards, whether he had been punished or not. I think in Europe today (with the rise of the far-right) we need to understand the extraordinary mediocrity of evil, he added. While Vuillard gets only 10 euros ($11) for winning the Goncourt, the prize almost guarantees a boost in sales of 450,000 copies or more, placing it instantly among the year’s top bestsellers.Adolf Hitler has several times received the leading German industrialists, as above on June 16, 1937. Photo: Rue des ArchivesAlthough his book was greatly admired, many critics had tipped Veronique Olmi to make history by becoming the second woman writer in a row to win the century-old prize. Her novel, Bakhita, based on another real-life story of a Sudanese slave girl who became a Catholic saint, is already a bestseller. It has won the Fnac prize and is also in the running for the Femina prize, which will be decided on Wednesday. In the third round of voting for the Goncourt, however, she lost out to Vuillard by six votes to four.Among the other finalists was Alice Zeniter’s The Art of Losing, a powerful account of an Algerian harki family who sided with the French during the bloody nine-year Algerian war of independence that ended in 1962.We did not choose the winner on the basis of the sex or origin of the writer, said the doyen of French letters Bernard Pivot, who chaired the jury. The book is all that counts, he told AFP.

Afghan VP Dostum's bodyguards jailed five years for rape

Posted:

(AFP) - Seven of Afghan Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum’s bodyguards convicted of sexual assault and illegal imprisonment of a political rival have been sentenced to five years in jail, officials said Monday.Dostum, a powerful ethnic Uzbek warlord linked to multiple human rights abuses in Afghanistan, fled to Turkey in May after he was accused of raping and torturing Ahmad Ishchi, a former governor of northern Jowzjan province, in 2016.He allegedly abducted Ishchi in Jowzjan and kept him hostage in his private compound for several days, where the captive was said to have been tortured and sodomised.Dostum has denied the accusations. With Dostum still abroad, ostensibly for medical check-ups and family reasons, seven of his bodyguards were convicted over the incident last Wednesday but are not yet in custody.Every one of the bodyguards will serve a five-year prison sentence. They have not been detained yet -- they will be arrested soon, a Supreme Court official, who asked not to be named, told AFP.Dostum’s spokesman and aides could not be immediately reached for comment. The men were not present when a Kabul court handed down the decision and are now in Jowzjan, Ishchi told AFP.The punishment of these bodyguards is a positive step but I am not happy or satisfied with the length of their prison sentence -- they should serve more years in prison, he said. The real culprit and perpetrator is Dostum and his men -- they should be prosecuted. That Dostum has not been prosecuted over the incident is seen by many as further evidence of how Afghan warlords and strongmen operate with impunity.Observers have been sceptical the government would sack or bring charges against Dostum, who has survived all previous allegations of abuse.Human Rights Watch researcher Patricia Gossman said the sentences fell short of delivering justice in the controversial case and that further investigation was needed. The government is eager to find a way to make this case go away but it’s a command and control issue, Gossman told AFP.Who gave the order? Who should be held accountable? Getting to the truth of what happened here is essential for genuine justice.Despite his human rights record, Dostum was invited to join the National Unity Government in 2014 in an attempt by President Ashraf Ghani to attract the support of his mostly ethnic Uzbek constituency.

Formula 1 champion Hamilton avoided taxes on jet: leaks

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton avoided paying taxes on his private jet using an elaborate scheme now under investigation by British tax authorities, new leaked documents revealed on Monday. The driver received a 3.3 million pound ($4.4 million, EUR3.7 million) VAT refund in 2013 after his luxury plane was imported into the Isle of Man -- a low-tax British Crown Dependency, according to the BBC and Guardian newspaper. The revelations are the latest to emerge from the so-called Paradise Papers, released by the US-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).They allege accountancy firm EY and Appleby -- the Bermuda-based law firm at the centre of the leaks -- assisted Hamilton and dozens of other clients in setting up seemingly artificial leasing businesses to get multi-million-pound VAT rebates. The complex arrangements, which involved the individuals forming entities that rented their own jets, may contravene Europe-wide rules forbidding refunds for personal use, the media outlets said.Representatives for Hamilton could not be reached by AFP for comment. His lawyers told the BBC a review by a tax barrister found the structure was lawful, and that some VAT had been paid through the arrangements. There is also no indication Hamilton was directly involved in creating the scheme, and simply followed professional advice, the Guardian said.EY said it does not discuss individual clients. All our advice, whether in planning or compliance, is based on our knowledge of tax law and providing transparency to tax authorities, it added in a statement.Appleby did not respond to a request for comment.Leaked documents showed as many as 50 such schemes involving the Isle of Man, according to the BBC.Its government announced on October 24 it had asked Britains finance ministry to help investigate business jet imports into the EU through its territory.A British treasury spokesman said it could not comment on individual taxpayers information.Tax specialists who reviewed the leaks for the ICIJ consortium confirmed to AFP that Hamiltons arrangements appeared to be at the very minimum, aggressive tax planning: an artificial scheme, designed to obtain a tax advantage.Rita de la Feria, chair of tax law at the University of Leeds, added: If the scheme is being used to disguise private use of the jet, then the situation is of a more serious tax avoidance scheme.Hamilton, recently crowned world champion for a fourth time and one of richest sportsperson in the world, bought the jet -- a Bombardier Challenger 605 -- for 16.5 million pound. He has frequently posted photographs of its use for holidays and personal trips on social media.Under European tax rules, when a company or individual imports an aircraft they must pay 20 percent of the purchase price in VAT, which can be reclaimed only on business use.

UN turns up pressure on Myanmar over Rohingya crisis

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The UN Security Council on Monday called on Myanmar to rein in its military campaign in Rakhine state and allow hundreds of thousands of Muslim Rohingya driven out by the violence to return home.In a unanimous statement backed by China, the council strongly condemned the violence that has forced more than 600,000 Rohingya to flee across the border to Bangladesh. The council expressed grave concern over human rights violations, including by the Myanmar security forces against the Rohingya such as killing, sexual violence and burning of homes and property. It called on the government to ensure no further excessive use of military force in Rakhine state, to restore civilian administration and apply the rule of law.The statement included most of the demands contained in a draft resolution presented last month by Britain and France, but that measure ran into strong opposition from China, a supporter of Myanmars former ruling junta.China had indicated it was willing to resort to its veto power to block a resolution, but Beijing finally agreed to a statement during negotiations, diplomats said.Since late August, more than 600,000 Rohingya have been driven from their homes by an army campaign that the United Nations has described as ethnic cleansing.Myanmar authorities say the military operation is aimed at rooting out Rohingya militants who staged attacks on police posts. The Rohingya have faced decades of discrimination in Buddhist-majority Myanmar and have been denied citizenship since 1982, which has effectively rendered them stateless.Council members called for full access for humanitarian aid workers to Rakhine and said the government must address the root causes of the crisis by allowing equal access to full citizenship. The statement did not however threaten sanctions.During negotiations with China, language on citizenship rights was watered down in the statement as was a demand that Myanmar allow a UN human rights mission into the country, diplomats said. The statement calls on Myanmar to cooperate with the United Nations and encourages UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to appoint a special advisor on Myanmar.British Deputy UN Ambassador Jonathan Allen said despite the decision to drop the resolution, the council was issuing a strong, united message. The important thing is the content, Allen told reporters. Gaining a very strong, unanimous statement I think was the real prize here. The council statement was agreed as Guterres prepares to travel to Manila this week to join leaders of the Southeast Asian (ASEAN) bloc for a summit. The Rohingya refugee crisis is expected to be a top issue of discussion at the summit, to be attended by US President Donald Trump, who will dispatch US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to Myanmar later this month.Rights groups have accused the Security Council of dragging its feet and are calling for sanctions against those involved in the atrocities in Rakhine.Going forward, council members should be clear that they wont be held hostage by Chinas objections, and will instead be driven by the needs of victims and realities on the ground, not what makes China comfortable, said Akshaya Kumar, Human Rights Watch deputy UN director.

Blaming Iran, Saudi says missile strike may be 'act of war'

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Saudi Arabia and Iran traded fierce accusations over Yemen on Monday as Riyadh said a rebel missile attack may amount to an act of war and Tehran accused its rival of war crimes.Tensions have been rising between Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia and predominantly Shiite Iran, which back opposing sides in wars and power struggles from Yemen to Syria. On Monday, a Saudi-led military coalition battling Tehran-backed rebels in Yemen said it reserved the right to respond to a missile attack on Riyadh at the weekend, calling it a blatant military aggression by the Iranian regime which may amount to an act of war.Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir also warned Tehran.Iranian interventions in the region are detrimental to the security of neighbouring countries and affect international peace and security, he tweeted. We will not allow any infringement on our national security.Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif responded with dismissive tweets over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.KSA bombs Yemen to smithereens, killing 1000s of innocents including babies, spreads cholera and famine, but of course blames Iran, he wrote.KSA is engaged in wars of aggression, regional bullying, destabilising behaviour & risky provocations. It blames Iran for the consequences.Saudi forces on Saturday intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile near Riyadh international airport, reportedly fired from Yemen by Shiite Huthi rebels. It was the first reported Huthi strike to reach Riyadh and threaten air traffic, underscoring the growing threat posed by the conflict on Saudi Arabias southern border. The coalition on Monday sealed off the air, sea and land borders of Yemen, where it has been battling rebels in support of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadis internationally recognised government since 2015.Two humanitarian aid flights to Yemen had to be put on hold, the United Nations said.An Iranian foreign ministry statement quoted spokesman Bahram Ghassemi as saying the coalitions accusations were unjust, irresponsible, destructive and provocative.Ghassemi said the missile was fired by the Huthis in response to war crimes and several years of aggression by the Saudis. The missile attack was an independent action in response to this aggression, he said, adding that Iran had nothing to do with it.Critics have accused the Saudi-led coalition of not doing enough to prevent civilian deaths in its air war in Yemen, where more than 8,650 people have been killed since the intervention began.Repeated attempts to bring about a negotiated settlement to the conflict have failed, including a series of UN-backed peace talks.Saudi Arabia has blamed the Huthis for failures, and on Monday offered rewards totalling $440 million for information on 40 senior officials among the rebels.Topping the list, with a $30-million reward for tips leading to his capture, was the groups leader Abdulmalik al-Huthi.The Huthis in 2014 joined forces with their longtime enemy, Yemens ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, capturing the capital Sanaa and forcing Hadis government to operate from the southern city of Aden.Analysts said it was unclear how far Riyadh would be willing to go in the escalating confrontation. The kingdom is in the midst of an unprecedented purge of its upper ranks, with dozens of senior figures arrested at the weekend as 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman consolidates his grip on power.Prince Mohammed, who is also defence minister, is seen as a key proponent of the intervention in Yemen.Analyst Randa Slim of the Middle East Institute said it was unclear whether the Saudi leadership had thought through an escalation of the scale theyre hinting at.Compounding concerns of an escalation, she said, is the fact that US President Donald Trumps administration has also taken a hard line against Iran and may not send a deterrent message to the Saudi leadership. The Saudi-Iran rivalry also echoed this weekend in the resignation of Lebanons prime minister Saad Hariri, a Riyadh protege who said he was stepping down because of the grip of Iran and its ally Hezbollah on the country.Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah hit back on Sunday, saying Hariris resignation had been imposed by Saudi Arabia.Iran rejected Hariris words as baseless and said his resignation was designed to create tensions in Lebanon and in the region.Hariri, who announced his resignation in Riyadh, on Monday met Saudi King Salman and reviewed the situation in Lebanon, the state-run Saudi Press Agency reported.

Mattis looks to diplomacy as IS crumbles in Syria

Posted:

HELSINKI (AFP) - US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said Monday that he supported a diplomatic solution for the Syria conflict, as America and its partners look beyond the defeat of the Islamic State group in the war-torn nation.Speaking to reporters ahead of his arrival for talks in Finland on Monday, Mattis said intelligence assessments -- based primarily on the numbers of jihadists who have surrendered, deserted or been wounded -- showed that the whole bottom was dropping out of IS.He said he supported a UN-backed effort in Geneva, which has run in parallel to a Russian and Iranian-led process, to reach a diplomatic solution.Basically, we are trying to get this into the diplomatic mode so we can sort this out and make certain that minorities, whoever they are, are not subject to what weve seen under the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.The fight against Islamic State jihadists in Iraq and Syria is not over, but they have sustained a string of major defeats and lost most of the territory they once held.US allies are anxious for clear guidance from Washington about its plans in Syria once the Islamic State group is crushed.Mattiss arrival in Finland kicked of a week of talks with regional allies and NATO partners that will focus on security issues including IS and Russias increased military assertiveness. He will head to NATO headquarters in Brussels later in the week.Mattiss Helsinki visit also spotlights the workings of the so-called Northern Group, a little-known forum of 12 European nations that focuses on the continents military and security challenges, particularly those coming from the east. The trip is an opportunity to reiterate that we stand by our friends democracies, NATO and otherwise in Europe, if any nation including Russia seeks to undermine the rules-based international order, Mattis said.We do have a lot of shared values about sovereignty, he added.Though Finland and Sweden are not NATO members, they cooperate closely with the 28-member alliance.Moscow frequently sends warplanes into the skies around the Baltics and Europe remains anxious about Russias military intentions, especially after the 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. The Northern Group comprises Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Britain.

Trump due in Seoul amid N. Korea tensions

Posted:

SEOUL (AFP) - Donald Trumps marathon Asia tour moves on Tuesday to South Korea, another key ally in the struggle with nuclear-armed North Korea, but one with deep reservations about the US presidents strategy for dealing with the crisis. As tensions over Pyongyangs weapons programme have soared, the US president has traded personal insults and threats of war with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, but his next stop, Seoul -- and its 10 million inhabitants -- would be on the front line of any conflict.Getting ready to leave for South Korea and meetings with President Moon, a fine gentleman, Trump tweeted early Tuesday, adding: We will figure it all outTrump flies in from Japan after securing Tokyos full support for Washingtons stance that all options are on the table regarding North Korea, and declaring its nuclear ambitions a threat to the civilised world and international peace and stability. He enjoyed three days of near-bromance with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, calling him wonderful after a round of golf and describing US-Japan ties as really extraordinary. In Seoul, Trumps relationship with South Korean President Moon Jae-In is noticeably cooler, stoking concerns about the decades-old alliance and fears of being sidelined by the US in favour of Tokyo. At the same time, Moon is mindful that much of his capital is within range of the Norths artillery, and has demanded that no military action take place on the peninsula without the Souths prior consent.Trump has labelled Moons pro-engagement approach to North Korea as appeasement on Twitter, a comment that did not go down well in Seouls presidential Blue House.South Korea will roll out the red carpet for Trump as it seeks messages of assurance about the alliance and US resolve.Citizens views are mixed, with both No Trump and Welcome President Trump demonstrations taking place in downtown Seoul since the weekend, sometimes only a few blocks apart.North Korea -- which carried out by far its most powerful nuclear test to date in September -- itself welcomed Trump to the region with a rhetorical volley via the ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun, warning a spiritually instable president against making reckless remarks. In South Korea, Trumps first stop will be Camp Humphreys, where US forces stationed in the country have moved their headquarters from downtown Seoul.Later he will have a summit with Moon at the Blue House, followed by a lavish dinner with live concerts by both Korean traditional musicians and K-pop artists. On Wednesday, Trump will speak to South Korean MPs but his visit will not include a trip to the Demilitarized Zone dividing the Korean peninsula, with the administration downplaying the destination as a little bit of a cliche. Some observers have fretted that a gaffe by a president given to off-the-cuff remarks could send tensions rising on the peninsula. If Trump says anything that can provoke North Korea, it could send military tensions soaring again, said professor Koo Kab-Woo from the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.

US commerce chief defends Russian business links

LONDON (AFP) - US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has defended personal business links to Russia revealed by the Paradise Papers, in an interview with the BBC on Monday.I think the media has made a lot more out of it than it deserves, Wilbur said on the sidelines of a business conference in London.Wilbur insisted that there is no impropriety.A vast leak of documents dubbed the Paradise Papers released by the US-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) show that Ross has business ties to a shipping firm linked to Russian President Vladimir Putins inner circle.Rosss ties raise questions over potential conflicts of interest, and whether they undermine Washingtons sanctions on Moscow.Ross, a billionaire investor, holds a 31-percent stake in Navigator Holdings through a complex web of offshore investments detailed in the documents examined by nearly 100 news organisations as part of an international collaboration. His personal share of the firms stake was reduced when he took office in February, but the commerce chiefs investment is still valued at between $2 million and $10 million (1.7 billion euros and 8.6 billion euros), according to his security filings and government ethics disclosure.Navigator Holdings runs a lucrative partnership with Russian energy giant Sibur, which is partially owned by Putins son-in-law Kirill Shamalov and Gennady Timchenko, the Russian presidents friend and business partner who is subject to US sanctions.Responding to the BBC on Monday, Ross added: First of all the company in question, Sibur, is a very major hydrocarbon company. Its commercial relationship with Navigator Holdings is simply that Navigator charters some vessels to them.Theres no interlocking of board, theres no interlocking of shareholders, I had nothing to do with the negotiation of the deal. And in fact it was negotiated before I went on the board of Navigator.Ross went on: But most importantly the company that is our client itself, Sibur, was not then sanctioned, is not now sanctioned, and never was sanctioned in between.Theres nothing whatsoever improper.
