Oil prices down in Asia on weak Chinese data

Posted:

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Oil prices eased in Asian trade Monday as data showing weak Chinese manufacturing activity fuelled concerns over energy demand in the world's second largest economy, analysts said. New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate for March delivery, eased 51 cents at $96.98 in mid-morning trade while Brent North Sea crude for March was down 26 cents at $106.14.Commodity prices are currently under pressure due to weaker-than-expected data on Chinese manufacturing activity, Desmond Chua, market analyst at CMC Markets in Singapore, told AFP. China on Saturday said manufacturing activity slipped to a five-month low in January, confirming a slowdown in factory activity in the world's top energy consumer. The monthly purchasing managers' index (PMI) declined to 50.5 in January after recording 51 in December and 51.4 in November, according to the government's National Bureau of Statistics and the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.Any figure above the 50 mark indicates expansion of manufacturing activity while anything below that signals contraction. The news came days after banking giant HSBC's PMI came in at a six-month low of 49.5.Chua said investors will be keeping a close watch on US non-farm payrolls and unemployment data due out on Friday.Investors will be focused on the jobs data to see if the disappointing December numbers are a one-off as the US Federal Reserve has said, or if it is the start of something larger, Chua said. The US Labor Department last month said the US economy added just 74,000 jobs in December, well below the 197,000 expected by analysts. The unemployment rate fell 0.3 percentage point to 6.7 percent, the lowest since October 2008, mainly due to people dropping out of the labour force.

36 dead in air strikes on Syria's Aleppo: monitor

BEIRUT (AFP) - At least 36 people were killed Sunday in regime air strikes and aerial attacks with explosive-packed barrels on the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, a monitoring group said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime aircraft carried out a series of deadly air strikes for a second day in eastern parts of the city.Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that most of the dead were killed in several raids in which regime helicopters dropped so-called barrel bombs on the Tariq al-Bab district. He said 21 people were killed in three strikes in the eastern neighbourhood, among them 13 children. The other deaths were in additional air strikes and barrel bomb attacks in the city, which is divided between regime and rebel control. The latest bloodshed comes a day after at least 85 people were killed in a string of barrel bomb attacks and aerial raids, according to the Observatory. The Britain-based group relies on a network of activists and other sources on the ground for its reporting.Government troops have been advancing in the area around Aleppo city, once the country's economic hub.The Al-Watan newspaper, which is close to the government, said Sunday that government troops had seized control of most of the east Karam al-Turab district -- which the Observatory confirmed. The newspaper said troops were seeking to take control of several eastern and northern districts in a bid to recapture large swathes of the city, where fighting began in mid-2012.In recent months, the army has seized parts of the province from rebels, including the area around Aleppo airport, which was closed for nearly a year because of fighting nearby. The airport was reopened to air traffic last month.

Attacks kill 21 as Iraq forces hit Anbar militants

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraqi government forces pressed their assault on militant strongholds in Anbar province Sunday as attacks elsewhere killed 21 people, with intensifying violence fuelling fears of a return to all-out conflict. The effort to win back parts of Ramadi, capital of the western province of Anbar and one of two cities that either entirely or partly fell out of government control weeks ago, comes with violence at its highest level since 2008.Soldiers and police fought alongside armed pro-government tribesmen in southern Ramadi in some of the heaviest clashes of recent weeks, a police officer and an AFP journalist said. They were making slow progress in retaking militant-held neighbourhoods as acting Defence Minister Saadun al-Dulaimi visited to oversee operations. Two police officers said the assault enabled government forces to wrest back control of parts or most of several key areas of Ramadi, including the Malaab, Street 60, Humeirah and Albu Jabar districts. On Saturday the defence ministry announced that warplanes and artillery had hit a neighbourhood of northern Fallujah, a rare military operation inside the city itself. The army has largely stayed out of Fallujah, a short drive from Baghdad, fearing major incursions could ignite a protracted conflict with massive civilian casualties and damage to property.US battles in the city, a bastion of militants following the 2003 US-led invasion, were among their bloodiest since the Vietnam War.For weeks, anti-government forces have held parts of Ramadi and all of Fallujah, the first time they have exercised such open control in cities since the peak of violence that followed the 2003 invasion. The Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has been involved in the fighting, as have other militant groups and anti-government tribes. The police and the army have recruited their own tribal allies. The stand-off has prompted more than 140,000 people to flee their homes, the UN refugee agency said, describing it as the worst displacement in Iraq since the peak of the 2006-2008 sectarian conflict.Elsewhere in Iraq on Sunday, attacks in and around Baghdad and north of the capital killed 21 people, security and medical officials said. The deadliest violence struck in the town of Baiji, where a coordinated attack on an encampment of anti-Qaeda Sunni militiamen, or Sahwa fighters, killed eight people in all, security and medical officials said.An initial gun attack on the base was followed by a suicide car bomb, with 17 others wounded.Attacks in the areas of Baghdad, Balad, Taji, Mosul and Kirkuk killed 13 more people.Violence has spiked markedly in recent months, with more than 1,000 people killed in January, the highest toll for a month since April 2008, according to government data.

Iran pledges to act in good faith on nuclear talks

Posted:

MUNICH (AFP) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday pledged good faith in talks to dispel Western fears over Irans nuclear programme, after a rare meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry.Iran will enter the next round of talks later this month with political will and good faith to reach an agreement, Zarif said.It would be foolish of us (and) ... a disaster for everyone if the process did not lead to definitive results, Zarif told a panel at the Munich Security Conference.World powers hold another round of talks with Iran on February 18 after reaching an initial accord in November to curb uranium enrichment and open up nuclear facilities to allay concerns Tehran is seeking to acquire atomic weapons.Kerry and Zarif discussed the upcoming negotiations with the P51 and the EU on a comprehensive agreement that will begin in Vienna, a senior US State Department official said. The P51 groups the permanent five members of the UN Security Council -- the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France -- and Germany in talks with Iran.Kerry reiterated the importance of both sides negotiating in good faith and Iran abiding by its commitments under the Joint Plan of Action (agreed in November), said the official. He also made clear that the United States will continue to enforce existing sanctions, he added.Zarif told the panel it would be a major mistake for our friends to believe that we are here because sanctions have been effective.Rather, they had had the opposite effect and caused a lot of resentment, he said, describing a very large trust deficit in Iran needing to be overcome.Zarif stressed that the election of moderate President Hassan Rouhani last year reflected Iranians desire for a constructive engagement with the international community which will bring mutual respect.Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told the panel there had been many missed opportunities in the past and this one had to be taken now.I do not know if (the talks) will succeed or not but it would be truly criminal not to do everything to make (them) succeed, Bildt said.

One dead as police storm Kenya mosque

MOMBASA (AFP) - At least one man was killed and a police officer seriously wounded Sunday when police raided a mosque in Kenya and arrested more than 100 people, a local police chief said.Police said they stormed the Masjid Musa mosque in the coastal city of Mombasa because young men were being radicalised there.Kenyan police have in the past linked the mosque to recruitment for the Somali Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist group Shebab. We received information that there was a jihad convention in the mosque and thats when we moved in, said local police chief Robert Kitur. They turned violent and attacked our officers but we have managed to arrest over 100 who will be charged tomorrow, he said, without giving further details.Men who carried away the body of the dead youth said he had been shot by police. Kitur confirmed one person had died, but declined to say in what circumstances.Last September Shebab stormed the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, causing at least 67 deaths in a four-day siege.Shebab sympathisers and sleeper cells have been blamed for a series of deadly but much smaller attacks over the past two years in Kenya.

Tennis: Murray lifts Britain into Davis Cup quarter-finals

Posted:

SAN DIEGO (AFP) - Andy Murray beat Sam Querrey in four sets Sunday to send Great Britain into the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup for the first time since 1986.Wimbledon champion Murray posted his second singles victory of the tie, downing Querrey 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (3/7), 6-1, 6-3 to capture the needed third point in the best-of-five match tie.Britain had seized a commanding 2-0 lead on the opening day on Friday as 175th-ranked James Ward pulled off a remarkable comeback win over Querrey.Ward won 10 of the last 11 games to grab the five-set triumph, after Murray had crushed Davis Cup newcomer Donald Young in straight sets.Young was a late replacement in the US squad for injured John Isner. The formidable doubles duo of Bob and Mike Bryan had kept the Americans alive with a doubles victory over Colin Fleming and Dominic Inglot on Saturday. However, Querrey couldnt prevent Great Britain from posting their first Davis Cup win over the United States since 1935.That winning British team was led by Fred Perry, putting Murray in Perrys footsteps again after the Scots Wimbledon triumph last year made him the first British man to win at the All England Club since Perry in 1936.While he delivered two of Great Britains three points, Murray said Wards magnificent rally against Querrey on Friday shouldnt be overlooked. Its obviously nice, you want to try and contribute as much as possible in these weeks, Murray said.James had a great win against Sam the first day to put us in that position and it was up to me today to try and close it out.Murray, who had back surgery in September, needed two hours and 54 minutes to get past Querrey on the red clay court at Petco Park -- home of Major League Baseballs San Diego Padres.Murray and Querrey split the first two closely contested sets. Murray had a chance to serve out the first in the 10th game but was broken for the second time and they went to the decider. In the second, neither man managed to gain a service break and Querrey took the tiebreaker, but he was unable to build on that momentum as Murray broke him twice en route to a 3-0 lead in the third frame.Murray earned the break he needed in the sixth game of the fourth set, but had to fend off two break points in the final game before sealing the match when Querrey sent a service return out.In the quarter-finals Britain will face Italy, who sealed a 3-1 victory over Argentina in Mar del Plata on Sunday. This is the first time Ive been involved in Davis Cup that weve had a chance of winning the competition, Murray said. Its obviously going to be extremely tough but we have a great team spirit. The United States will face a playoff to remain in the elite World Group.

Football: Oxlade-Chamberlain fires Arsenal back to top

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored twice as Arsenal moved back to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. With previous leaders Manchester City hosting Chelsea on Monday, Arsene Wenger's team had an opportunity to regain top spot and, thanks to Oxlade-Chamberlain's first goals of the season, they seized it.The midfielder, 20, was making just his second league start of the campaign after missing the first five months of it with a knee problem. And with Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey out through injury, Wenger had brought in Kim Kallstrom on loan from Spartak Moscow to boost his midfield options. But the Sweden international signed with a back problem that, despite the club doctors informing Wenger prior to the transfer, could mean that he misses around six games.Wenger chose to deploy Oxlade-Chamberlain in central midfield and also turned to Lukas Podolski for just his fifth Premier League start of the campaign to add some creativity alongside Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla. But Palace nullified them with surprising ease for 45 minutes as manager Tony Pulis opted to anchor Mile Jedinak and Kagisho Dikgacoi in front of his defence in the hope of stifling the home side. The hosts fired an early warning when Ozil spotted left-back Nacho Monreal racing upfield and lifted a superb ball over the Palace defence. The angle was tight for the Spain defender, but he still forced Julian Speroni into a fine stop with his legs.Monreal's chance appeared to increase Palace's resolve not to let Arsenal go into an early lead and one of their former players nearly put the visitors in front on 14 minutes.Marouane Chamakh has looked rejuvenated in recent weeks and when he received the ball in midfield, he easily skipped past Laurent Koscielny. But just as he was bearing down on Wojciech Szczesny, his touch eluded him and the Arsenal goalkeeper dived at his feet to save. The closest either side came in the opening half was on 34 minutes when Ozil's free-kick was met by the head of Koscielny. The central defender got the faintest of touches, but as the ball looked destined for the corner of the net, Speroni fully extended himself to make a fine save. However, all of Palace's first-half efforts counted for little just two minutes into the second half.On the first occasion that Jedinak failed to close down Arsenal's midfield, Cazorla found space to clip a majestic ball over the Palace back line and Oxlade-Chamberlain ghosted into the area before lobbing over the advancing Speroni.Moments later, with Bacary Sagna caught upfield, Jason Puncheon found space on Palace's left wing. The attacking midfielder, who made his move to Palace from Southampton permanent on Friday, crossed and Yannick Bolasie headed the ball on to Cameron Jerome, whose header was well stopped by Szczesny.Cazorla was at then at the heart of another of Arsenal's better moves when he found Arteta, who rolled the ball on to Podolski, but the Germany forward fired wide when he should have at least tested Speroni. With Arsenal still dominating possession but also looking more likely to make it count, Pulis brought on midfielder Barry Bannan for Jerome in the hope of adding some craft.Within minutes Puncheon had beaten Arsenal's offside trap and cut the ball back to Bannan, but the Scot fired over from 15 yards.Oxlade-Chamberlain then sealed the win on 73 minutes when he received the ball from substitute Rosicky and exchanged passes with Olivier Giroud before sprinting into the area and driving past Speroni.

Football: Madrid held as Ronaldo sees red, Atletico go top

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo was sent-off as Real Madrid lost ground in the La Liga title race with a 1-1 draw away to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.Atletico Madrid became outright leaders for the first time since their double winning season in 1996 earlier in the day with a 4-0 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday. The draw moves Real level with Barcelona, who suffered a shock defeat at home to Valencia on Saturday, three points behind Atletico. It could have been so much better for Madrid as after a difficult opening 45 minutes, Jese Rodriguez looked to have them on the road to a 11th consecutive victory when he prodded home Ronaldo's cross 25 minutes from time. However, after Ibai Gomez had spectacularly equalised, Ronaldo was shown a soft red card for lashing out at Carlos Gurpegi. And in the end Madrid were grateful to goalkeeper Diego Lopez for salvaging a point as he made lave saves from Gomez and Aritz Aduriz.Carlo Ancelotti's men could have been in front after just 20 seconds as Ronaldo took advantage of a poor clearance by Gorka Iraizoz, but his effort flew inches wide.Thereafter, it was Athletic who had the upper hand in the first-half and should have been in front when Aduriz shot wide when clean through on Diego Lopez.Iker Muniain also passed up a great chance to open the scoring when he miscontrolled when unmarked inside the area. However, Madrid responded after the break and Iraizoz was forced into two flying saves to deny Luka Modric and Karim Benzema. The visitors did finally find a way through 25 minutes from time as Benzema fed Ronaldo on the left and his low cross was turned home on the stretch by Jese.Real's lead lasted just nine minutes as Gomez made a stunning introduction as a substitute as with his second touch he fired an effort from 20 yards in off the inside of the post.Madrid were then left to hold on for a point when Ronaldo saw red after a coming together with Gurpegi after having a penalty appeal turned down.Gomez was denied a second by a brilliant save from Lopez, whilst the Madrid keeper also had to be alive to hold Aduriz's header as the spoils were shared.Earlier, Atletico moved top on an emotional evening at the Vicente Calderon, as former players and fans paid their tributes to former Spain and Atletico player and coach Luis Aragones, who died on Saturday, before the match. The Atletico fans remained silent for the first eight minutes before beginning to chant Aragones' name in a tribute to the number he wore as a player with Los Rojiblancos. And Atletico boss Diego Simeone was pleased with how his side dealt with the emotion of the evening. When someone like Luis leaves us there is pain and sadness, but today the fans, the game and that silence for the first eight minutes before they sang his name moved me. From above he would be wearing red and white and happy with the bravery we showed.Real Sociedad made it difficult without creating great chances. Defending didn't worry me, but the problem was when you don't attack and it was difficult for us to get out in the second-half.The changes gave us some freshness. We had the ball more and we managed to get going again. It is a win against a very difficult opponent. After a quiet start, the hosts went in front seven minutes before the break when David Villa finished off a fine team move for his 12th goal of the season.Villa's joy didn't last long, though, as he had to be substituted just two minutes later after pulling up with a muscular injury.Sociedad enjoyed the majority of possession after the break as Atletico decided to sit on their lead, but the Basque side failed to seriously test Courtois. The home fans then gave Diego a hero's welcome as he replaced Jose Sosa.Diego Costa made sure of the three points 18 minutes from time when he coolly slotted Raul Garcia's through ball into the far corner.Atletico struck again just two minutes later as Miranda rose highest to power home Koke's corner. And Diego rounded off the scoring when he showed great poise inside the Sociedad box before blasting high into the roof of the net.

Golf: Gutsy Gallacher grabs Dubai double

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Stephen Gallacher birdied two of the last three holes on Sunday to become the first player to successfully defend the Dubai Desert Classic.Starting the day two strokes clear of the field, the 39-year-old Scot was reeled in by the time he walked off the second green after twice straying off the tee.But instead of going under, after four bogeys in nine holes, he battled back and, on a day of high drama, emerged in front again on the back nine and held his nerve over the last three holes. The target of 15 under was set by Argentinian upstart Emiliano Grillo, who sunk a 40-footer for eagle at the par-five last after his over-cooked second outrageously rebounded back onto the green off an hospitality tent.Wearing black, the same as he did on the final day last year, Gallacher drew level with a birdie at 16 and then a sublime chip from the greenside rough for birdie at the next eased him back ahead. He needed to par the last to win and he managed that by sinking an edgy three-footer after his third shot had spun back too far to the front edge. The title defence was something that other former winners such as Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Seve Ballesteros were unable to accomplish and it revived Gallacher's hopes of playing in the Ryder Cup in Scotland in September. The new world rankings out on Monday will see him move up to 37th and he is assured of playing in all four majors this year, including his first participation at the Masters in early April. It took everything I had after the poor front nine, but I just tried to build on yesterday (63) and stay patient, he said.I was quite fortunate that no-one ran away with it and I just tried to hit every shot at a time, just like yesterday.I knew a five (at the last) was going to win it and it's the only time that I've hit a back spin like that all week and it's nearly gone in the water. But yesterday was the key - to be 10 under through 10 holes.I wish I could play this course every week.Grillo was solo in second for the biggest prize of his fledging career so far with France's Romain Wattel and Brooks Koepka of the United States a further stroke back on 14 under after a 66 and 70 respectively.Tournament favourite Rory McIlroy endured a torrid final day and could only manage a 74 and a tie for ninth. The Irishman was steady enough to start with, parring the first six holes, but a bogey at the next appeared to suck the confidence out of him and three bogeys in four holes after the turn ended his challenge. It was just one of those days, he said.I think anything that sort of could go wrong did. Okay I hit a couple of loose drives, but I didn't really get away with them or stuff like that. Just sort of, you know, one of those days.World number three Henrik Stenson closed with a 68, but could do no better than tie for 29th.Woods, meanwhile, finished with a flourish, birdieing his final three holes for a closing 71.But he was already, at the start of the day, too far behind to have any say in the proceedings as he left Dubai tied for 41st and still looking to kick his 2014 season into full gear.Unfortunately I turned it around too late, he commented.

Olympics: No Sochi reprieve for banned India

Posted:

SOCHI (AFP) - India's three competitors at the Winter Olympics had their slender hopes of competing under their national flag in Sochi dashed on Sunday. The India Olympic Association (IOA) remains suspended from the Olympic movement until fresh elections take place on February 9.As that falls after the February 7 opening ceremony, the three athletes will compete as independent competitors. They will take part as independent athletes under the International Olympic Committee (IOC) flag, said IOC spokesman Mark Adams on Sunday when he ruled out a last-minute reprieve. There will be meetings of the IOA over the next couple of days, but these will be after the opening ceremony so it's unlikely there will be a change.Things are on a good footing and we are hopeful that they have followed advice.India's athletes in Sochi are Shiva Keshavan in men's luge, Nadeem Iqbal in cross country skiing and Himanshu Thakur in Alpine skiing. The IOA is set to elect world squash chief N. Ramachandran as its president next week, paving the way for the country's expected return to the Olympic fold. Ramachandran was the lone candidate in the fray for the president's post in the February 9 elections. Also certain to be elected unopposed were Hockey India official Rajiv Mehta as secretary-general and the country's tennis chief Anil Khanna as treasurer.Ramachandran, whose elder brother N. Srinivasan heads the Board of Control for Cricket in India, served as the IOA treasurer from 2008 to 2012 and has been president of the World Squash Federation since 2008. The IOC froze India's membership in December 2012 and suspended it from the Games movement after the IOA elected a number of tainted officials to key posts.

Warne to think about England coaching job

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australian bowling great Shane Warne, so often the cause of Englands demise, offered Monday to think about reviving the old enemy as the countrys next coach. As England players flew home in the early hours following a final defeat in Sydney, Warne took to Twitter in answer to calls for him to apply for the role.To my English followers, Im flattered that you would like me to consider the England job, Warne tweeted. All I can say is -- I will think about itThe comment could of course be a wind-up from the 44-year-old who, at the end of January, was named as spin consultant ahead of Australias World Twenty20 campaign starting in Bangladesh in March.Cricket Australia said Warne would support head coach Darren Lehmann, providing specialist training for the squads spinners. The England job has been vacant since Andy Flower quit a week ago after losing the Ashes 5-0 on a disastrous tour Down Under.Warne, who retired in 2007 with a then world-record 708 Test wickets, tormented England during his celebrated career, including a 1994 hat-trick, but was also well-known for off-field antics.Melbournes Herald Sun urged Warne to think again about his offer. You should be dismissing hare-brained ideas like that without a second thought, it said on its website.Surely you wouldnt coach the Poms mate?? tweeted former batsman and colleague Michael Slater.Englands one-day coach Ashley Giles is among the favourites to take over from Flower.

Tennis: Makarova triumphs in Pattaya Open final

Posted:

PATTAYA, (AFP) - Ekaterina Makarova won her second career title on Sunday, claiming a 6-3 7-6 (7) victory over Czech Karolina Pliskova at the Pattaya Open. The Russian left-hander, whose only previous title came when she won Eastbourne in 2010, withstood a strong challenge in both sets, but her greater consistency and more aggressive play in the tiebreak earned her a victory.Pliskova, who was also seeking her second career title after winning in Kuala Lumpur in February 2013, struck six aces in her opening service game but still had to fight off two break points before holding for 1-1.She then failed to convert three break points on Makarovas serve in the next game and went on to lose her serve at 4-3 in the only break of the match when she hit a forehand long. The second set went with serve, with Pliskova failing to convert two further break points to lead 4-2.In a dramatic finale, Makarova built a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak but faced set point at 6-5 after she netted a smash.Pliskova though hit her only double-fault of the match and also failed to win a second set point at 7-6 before Makarova secured victory on her first match point.I was angry a little bit because she served twice really good and she returned just on the line and then it was 5-5, said Makarova. Then I missed a pretty easy ball. It got tighter and tighter and she had set point again. I just had to be focused and get everything in and try to be as aggressive as I could.Pliskova said she considered that she had been second best throughout.I think she played better than me the whole match, Pliskova said.I was just trying to stay in the match and trying to fight, she said. What happened in my last matches that I won, from two match points down and 0-3 in the third - I was hoping that this could happen again. But it didnt.
