Pet reptiles pose health risk for infants: study

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Owning exotic reptiles such as snakes, chameleons, iguanas and geckos could place infants at risk of salmonella infection, according to a British study published on Monday.Researchers in the southwestern English county of Cornwall found that out of 175 cases of salmonella in children under five over a three-year period, 27 percent occurred in homes which had reptile pets.Salmonella is a germ that, in humans, can cause gastroenteritis, colitis, blood infections and meningitis. Reptiles, though, are unaffected by the bug, which colonises their gut and is passed on in their stools. If the pet is allowed to run free in the home, this poses a risk, especially if the child is at an exploratory stage of crawling or licking surfaces. The average age of children who fell ill with reptile-associated salmonellosis (RAS) was just six months, said the study, led by Dan Murphy of the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.RAS is associated with a severe outcome -- hospitalisation and disease, it said.Coupled with evidence of increasing ownership of indoor reptile pets, the incidence of RAS hospitalisation is likely to increase. Health professionals such as general practitioners and paediatricians need to be aware of this risk. The investigation is published in a specialised British journal, Archives of Disease in Childhood.A US study in 2004 estimated that RAS was behind 21 percent of all of laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella among people aged under 21.

UN Security Council debates North Korea rights abuse

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The United States on Monday slammed North Korea as a living nightmare for its citizens at the first-ever UN Security Council meeting on Pyongyangs dismal rights record, held despite opposition from China. The unprecedented talks at the 15-member council opened after China, Pyongyangs ally, failed to block the meeting, which convened even as North Korea faces US accusations of staging a cyber attack on a Hollywood Studio.US envoy Samantha Power said a UN commission of inquiry that compiled testimonies from North Korean exiles exposed the Pyongyang regimes brutality. They show North Korea for what it is: a living nightmare, she said.Power recalled testimony from a starving prison camp survivor who picked kernels of corn from cattle dung to eat and of a former guard who said prison wardens routinely raped prisoners. The UN General Assembly put the international spotlight on North Korea when it adopted a landmark resolution last week urging the Security Council to consider referring Pyongyang to the International Criminal Court.Approved by a resounding majority, the resolution drew heavily from the UN inquiry report released in February that detailed a vast network of prison camps holding up to 120,000 people, along with cases of torture, summary executions and rape. The inquiry concluded that North Korea was committing human rights violations without parallel in the contemporary world, and that these were ordered by the highest level of the state.Rarely has such an extensive charge sheet of international crimes been brought to the councils attention, UN assistant secretary-general for human rights Ivan Simonovic told the council.British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant called the report a wake-up call to the world about the appalling situation in North Korea and said Pyongyang should listen and engage to address rights concerns. No decision was taken on Monday on the call to refer North Korea to the ICC for crimes against humanity, but the United States, Britain, Australia, France among others said the council should consider taking action.By placing North Koreas appalling human rights record on its agenda, the Council can now at any point take the next step of referring these crimes against humanity to the ICC, said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. The meeting opened with China raising objections, triggering a procedural raised-hand vote in which 11 of the 15 council members supported putting North Korea on the agenda. China and Russia voted against while Chad and Nigeria abstained.Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi said de-nuclearization, encouraging dialogue and maintaining stability on the Korean peninsula were the shared priorities of the global community.Getting involved in the human rights situation will go against the above goals and can only bring harm instead of benefits, said Liu.Until now, the top UN body has focused on North Koreas nuclear program as a security threat, and has imposed sanctions on Pyongyang over its nuclear and ballistic tests.Under UN procedures, North Korea had the right to attend the council meeting and voice its views, but it decided to stay away.South Koreas Ambassador Oh Joon made an emotional address, telling council members that North Koreans were not just anybody for his countrymen and that accounts of rights abuses were breaking our hearts.Seouls envoy said referring North Korea to the ICC was one option on the table, but that council should also seek to promote dialogue with Pyongyang to address rights concerns.Power accused North Korea of carrying out a cyber attack on Sony Pictures that exposed embarrassing emails and scuttled the release of The Interview, a movie about a fictional plot to kill leader Kim Jong-Un.North Koreas offer to conduct a joint investigation of the hack attack with the United States was absurd, she said.

Clashes in Libya's Benghazi kill 16 pro-government forces

BENGHAZI (AFP) - Clashes on Monday between pro-government forces and Islamist militiamen in Libyas eastern city of Benghazi killed 16 people and wounded dozens, security sources and medics said.Forces loyal to former general Khalifa Haftar and to internationally recognised Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani have been battling for weeks against Islamists who have taken control of much of Libyas second city, and the capital Tripoli. The Benghazi Medical Centre said it received the bodies of seven people and 35 wounded in the clashes, while Al-Jala hospital said it took in four bodies and 25 wounded.Medical sources said the casualties were all from Haftars ranks and pro-government forces.Islamist militias rarely report their casualties. The fighting raged in southern and central Benghazi, security sources said.Farther east, in the Islamist stronghold of Derna, five soldiers were killed on Monday when gunmen attacked a checkpoint in the citys western suburb of Dahr el-Ahmar, a military spokesman said.Earlier this month the Islamists staged a military parade in Derna with tanks and combatants carrying black flags.Three years after dictator Moamer Kadhafi was toppled and killed in a NATO-backed revolt, Libya is awash with weapons and powerful militias, and run by rival governments and parliaments.

Ten injured in van attack on French Christmas market

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - A driver ploughed into a Christmas market in western France Monday, injuring 10 people before stabbing himself, a day after a man shouting Allahu Akbar ran down pedestrians in another French city.At least four people were badly hurt in the latest incident in the city of Nantes, the third attack in three days by individuals against civilians or security forces in France, sparking fears of possible copycat action. On Sunday a man drove into pedestrians on the streets of the eastern city of Dijon, injuring 13. The driver was suffering from a severe psychological disorder, a prosecutor said, easing concerns that the attack was inspired by Islamic extremism. On Saturday, a man was shot dead by police after walking into a police station in the central town of Joue-les-Tours and attacking three officers with a knife while yelling Allahu Akbar.Authorities in Nantes stressed there were no indications of a terrorist link in the Christmas market attack. We cannot speak of a terrorist act, local prosecutor Brigitte Lamy told reporters at the scene, saying that initial evidence pointed instead to an isolated case which was of the same kind as the one that took place in Dijon.President Francois Hollande has urged the public not to panic while government spokesman Stephane Le Foll has warned against lumping them (attacks) together.Prime Minister Manuel Valls reiterated the appeal for coolheadedness after the Christmas market attack. That attack in Frances sixth-biggest city took place at around 7:00 pm (1800 GMT) as people across the country thronged shops and markets in search of last-minute Christmas presents. The van driver charged at a chalet serving hot wine, in front of which several people had congregated, a witness told AFP.A source close to the investigation said that, after slamming into the shoppers, he stabbed himself at least nine times, causing himself serious injuries. Lamy said the attacker was known to police, without specifying why, and said he had not voiced any specific demand.Investigators were examining a notebook found next to the white van, she added. The three attacks have jarred nerves in France after repeated threats against the country over its involvement in the fight against Islamic extremists in Africa and the Middle East. The man behind Saturdays attack in Joue-Les-Tours, identified as Bertrand Nzohabonayo, a Burundian convert to Islam, apparently shouted Allahu Akbar -- an Islamic phrase meaning God Is Greatest that has been used by Islamist fighters in wars or by extremists when waging violent attacksTwo police were seriously injured in the assault while a third officer was lightly hurt.Sundays attack in Dijon by a man shouting the same slogan sparked fears of more attacks by individuals possible responding to calls for violence by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group.Bertrand Nzohabonayo had posted an IS flag on his Facebook page last week.A legal resident in France, he was known for petty crime but was not on a domestic intelligence watchlist although his brother Brice, who was arrested in Burundi after the attack, is known for his radical views.Nzohabonayos mother had told authorities in August last year that she was worried about Brices influence on his brother, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said. But French authorities moved quickly to quash speculation about the country being under attack.A prosecutor in Dijon said the 40-year-old driver of the car who targeted passers-by at five different locations on Sunday had been to psychiatric hospital 157 times and had no known links to jihadist groups. She said he told police that he ploughed into people due to a sudden outburst of empathy for the children of Chechnya and had shouted Allahu Akbar to give him courage. He was not guided by religion but because he felt that politically he had to react, she said. The Islamic State jihadist group has repeatedly called for attacks against France, most recently in a video posted on jihadist sites.Valls said Monday that more than 1,000 nationals were involved in one way or another with jihad in Syria or Iraq, of whom 56 or 57 have since died.We have never known such serious danger where terrorism is concerned, he said.

Football: Chelsea sink Stoke to secure top spot at Christmas

STOKE-ON-TRENT (AFP) - Chelsea ensured they will spend Christmas Day on top of the Premier League as goals from John Terry and Cesc Fabregas gave the leaders a gritty 2-0 victory at Stoke on Monday. It was not the most fluent performance from Jose Mourinhos side but, at a venue where Arsenal recently lost 3-2, it was the result and not the performance which mattered most and the Blues now sit three points clear of second placed Manchester City heading into the hectic festive programme.Citys win over Crystal Palace on Saturday had drawn them level on points with Chelsea, but this was an emphatic response from the west Londoners as they bid to wrestle the title from the Eastlands outfit. The only concern for Chelsea was a late injury to Belgium playmaker Eden, Hazard, who was replaced after getting a kick to his foot following a challenge by Jon Walters. These victories mean more than three points, to win and get three points the players need the right spirit and mentality, Mourinho said.To win here they must be a really very good team with the capacity to adapt to Stokes style of play. The three point lead we have is a little advantage, it is a little pillow we have to protect us.We go home happy and pleased with what we did.Chelsea could not have got off to a better start as they took the lead inside the opening 90 seconds when Terry rose highest above Geoff Cameron to head a Fabregas corner past Asmir Begovic. It was the former England captains first league goal of the season and a 12th assist of the season for Spain midfielder Fabregas.Mourinhos men coped better with the blustery conditions at the Britannia Stadium and came close to a second as Diego Costa dragged a shot wide of the post.Stoke defender Phil Bardsley was only booked for a late challenge on Hazard on the touchline, a decision that prompted Mourinho to protest from outside the technical area. And that incident seemed to spur on Stoke, who went close within seconds as Steven NZonzis deflected shot was pushed behind by Thibaut Courtois. But it should have been 2-0 on the half hour as a Fabregas pass breached the Stoke offside trap and Costa ran through before dragging his tame shot wide.Stoke created brief moments of optimism at the start of the second half with Peter Crouch heading over from Bardsleys cross from the right. The Blues carved out another opening as Hazard crossed for Fabregas whose near-post flick failed to overly trouble Begovic.Chelsea were not at their free-flowing best, but the steely visitors were still the most likely to get a second goal and Brazilian winger Willian saw a free kick deflect wide for a corner.Crouch had endured a frustrating evening and he was replaced by Mame Diouf as Stoke boss Mark Hughes looked for a way back into the contest.Marco Arnautovic then saw an effort deflected wide for a corner but Stokes set pieces were proving to be unthreatening.Charlie Adam was brought on to improve Stokes quality in possession. And immediately Walters came close to getting on the end of an Adam delivery, while the Scottish midfielder also drilled a left-footed shot wide from the edge of the area from NZonzis lay-off.But Fabregas settled the contest 12 minutes from time, taking Hazards pass before scuffing his shot past Begovic from close-range.It may have been a fortunate strike but the Spaniard joyously celebrated his fourth goal for the club he joined from Barcelona in the close-season.Chelsea could have added a third late on, with substitute Andre Schuerrle setting up Costa who was denied by Begovic.Stoke refused to give up and Oussama Assaidi was foiled by Courtois after finding space down the left and Adam fired just over in stoppage-time.

Napoli beat Juventus on penalties to win Super Cup

DOHA (AP) - Napoli beat Juventus 6-5 on penalties to win the Italian Super Cup on Monday and deny Massimiliano Allegri a first trophy in charge of the Bianconeri.Rafael saved Simone Padoins final penalty after Kalidou Koulibaly had converted to win the match for Napoli despite Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon saving three spot kicks. The match had ended 2-2 after extra time with Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain twice cancelling out strikes from Argentine compatriot Carlos Tevez. It was end-to-end action at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, much to the delight of the sellout crowd of 14,000 fans, who loudly cheered every Juventus attack. The traditional season opener between the Serie A champions and the Italian Cup winners had been rescheduled because of international commitments. The victory was a revenge for Napoli, which lost to Juventus in the same competition two years ago.Juventus, which holds the joint record number of victories, was looking to move clear of AC Milan with a seventh win.And it got off to the perfect start after a defensive howler from Napoli. Raul Albiol and Kalidou Koulibaly collided when trying to clear David Lopezs poor back-header, allowing Tevez to race clear and beat Rafael one-on-one with barely four minutes on the clock.Marek Hamsik went close to an equalizer when his effort took a deflection off Giorgio Chiellini to leave Gianluigi Buffon stranded but the ball came off the right post.Tevez almost doubled his tally but he was denied twice in quick succession by good saves from Rafael after more poor defending by Napoli.Napoli recovered and Higuain could have sent his side in at halftime level only to be thwarted by a fine diving save from Buffon.Jose Callejon should have equalized shortly after the break following a fantastic defense-splitting pass from Hamsik but he fired inches wide of the left post from almost an identical position to the Tevez goal.Napoli hit the post for the second time in the match when Higuains delightful chipped effort went over Buffon but came off the far right post. The equalizer finally came in the 68th minute when Jonathan de Guzman raced down the left flank and whipped in a cross for Higuains precise header.Juventus restored its lead moments into the second half of extra time as Paul Pogba set up Tevez, who dummied to carve out some space on the edge of the area before drilling low into the bottom left corner.Buffon pulled off a great reaction save to deny Higuain but could not prevent the Argentine from leveling two minutes from time.In the shootout, the Italy goalkeeper saved spot kicks from Jorginho, Dries Mertens and Jose Callejon but Tevez sent his crashing off the post and Roberto Pereyra blasted off target while Rafael denied Giorgio Chiellini and Padoin.

Google self-driving car prototype ready to try road

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Google on Monday announced that the first completed prototype of its self-driving car is ready to be road tested. Were going to be spending the holidays zipping around our test track, and we hope to see you on the streets of Northern California in the new year, the Internet titans autonomous car team said in a post at Google social network. The prototype is a manifestation of plans that California-based Google revealed in May to build its own autonomous car minus typical features such as steering wheels. They wont have a steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal... because they dont need them. Our software and sensors do all the work, Googles Chris Urmson said in a blog post in May.Technical specifics about the prototype were not disclosed on Monday. For Google, the car marks a shift away from adapting vehicles made by others in its quest to pioneer individual transport that needs only a stop-and-go function.Google said early this year that the top speed of the battery-powered prototypes will be 25 miles (40 kilometers) per hour and that they would be designed for utility, not luxury. The blog post on Monday showed a white, rounded bug-looking vehicle.Weve been working on different prototypes-of-prototypes, each designed to test different systems of a self-driving car-for example, the typical car parts like steering and braking, as well as the self-driving parts like the computer and sensors, Google said.Weve now put all those systems together in this fully functional vehicle-our first complete prototype for fully autonomous driving.Several automakers have been working on autonomous or semi-autonomous features for cars, such as self-parking, but no fully autonomous car has come to market.Self-driving cars, if widely adopted, stand to be as transformative to consumer life as the smartphone, said Mike Hudson, who tracks the automotive industry for eMarketer.

Oil resumes downward spiral on bearish Saudi comments

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices Monday resumed their downward trajectory following comments from key Middle Eastern oil producers that they have no plans to cut output.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in February dropped $1.87 to $55.26 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. European benchmark Brent oil for February delivery fell $1.27 to $60.11 a barrel in London.Mondays trade marked a return to the dominant downward trend in the oil market following a brief rally Friday.Appearing at an energy conference in Abu Dhabi Sunday, leading Middle Eastern producers held firm against any moves to cut production to boost crude prices. If they (non-OPEC countries) want to cut production they are welcome. We are not going to cut, certainly Saudi Arabia is not going to cut, Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi told reporters.Naimi, the de facto leader of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, and others said OPEC made the right decision in November when it decided not to cut output. Oil prices have lost about 50 percent of their value since June.United Arab Emirates Energy Minister Suhail al-Mazrouei was emphatic that OPEC, which pumps a third of global crude supplies, will not make any move soon to shore up the market. We will not interfere with market fundamentals and do something that is a short fix, he said.We need at least six months to assess the market and even if nothing happens when we meet after six months, we will not change our position, Mazrouei said. The remarks from the Saudis and others were a bearish drag on oil prices, said Michael Lynch, head of the Strategic Energy & Economic Research consultancy. The market is at a place where theyre looking for some kind of reaction from some producers and this is a bearish sign that the Saudis are so resistant, Lynch said.

Dollar mixed as some traders take profits

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar paused Monday as some traders took profits following the surge late last week after the US Federal Reserve meeting. At 2200 GMT, the dollar was essentially flat with the euro and the Swiss franc after retreating earlier in the session against both currencies. The dollar rose against the Japanese yen and the British pound.A light economic data calendar ... made for an opportune time for traders to take some money off of the table following the dollars continued run higher last week, said Omer Esiner, chief market analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange. The dollar advanced after the Fed left in place market expectations that it may raise interest rates only in the middle of 2015 and not sooner. While the Fed did not accelerate the timing to raise interest rates, currency traders are betting the US will normalize policy more quickly than its counterparts.Esiner said the dollar could Tuesday experience a final burst of activity before the Christmas holiday due to a trove of US data, including third-quarter economic growth. While holiday markets tend to be quiet, the lack of trading volumes can often result in choppy and erratic moves in the very near term, Esiner said.

Downcast Cook takes to the oche after World Cup snub

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Alastair Cook tried to take his mind off his shock World Cup snub as the deposed England captain stepped onto the oche at the World Darts Championships on Monday. Two days after the heartache of being sacked as Englands one-day captain and dropped from the squad for next years World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Cook made his return to the public eye in a light-hearted darts contest with international team-mate James Anderson at Londons Alexandra Palace.Cook took part in a one-leg shoot-out with Anderson ahead of the fifth days play in the World Championships and his bruised ego may have been soothed a little after he won with a double-11 checkout.Performing under the nickname Bed and Breakfast, Cook looked in good spirits on stage and got into the swing of things in amongst the raucous fans. The pair then headed into the commentary box to do a stint alongside former world champion Eric Bristow, and Cook, who remains Englands Test captain, admitted he was struggling to take in what the last 48 hours had served him.Its been an interesting couple of days, he said on Sky Sports Darts.Im frustrated and disappointed not to be joining Jimmy on the plane. Sometimes these things happen; I take it on the chin and get a couple of weeks away. Its gutting and frustrating, but thats the way of the world and you have to get over it and I wish the guys well.Cook is now looking forward to spending some time on his farm and then throwing himself into a 2015 campaign which involves Test series against the West Indies, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Its hard to talk about it at the moment (the World Cup) because of the way I feel, but there are Tests next year, two real marquee series (against Australia and South Africa) and hopefully I can get back scoring some runs, he added.

European stocks enjoy 'Santa rally'

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Europes main stock markets rose strongly on Monday in a renewed Santa rally powered by a modest recovery in oil prices early in the day, dealers said.Londons benchmark FTSE 100 index climbed 0.48 percent to 6,576.76 points, the Paris CAC 40 added 0.30 percent to 4,254.43, and in Frankfurt the DAX 30 rose 0.81 percent to 9,865.76.The euro rose to $1.2254 after sliding as low as $1.2220 in earlier Asian deals, matching Fridays two-year trough that was reached as the Federal Reserve signalled it may raise US interest rates in the middle of 2015.For the moment many of the worldwide indices have chosen to side with Santa, and have continued to rally despite oils renewed slip, said Spreadex trader Connor Campbell.- Oil prices turn down -Londons Brent crude for February delivery shed $1.35 to $60.03 per barrel in late trading, and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for February fell $1.68 to $55.45 a barrel.Oil prices had rebounded on Friday, wiping out losses earlier last week that saw prices hit fresh five-year lows on the back of ample supplies and mounting demand worries.Oil has however shed about half its value since June, and a decision in November by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to maintain output levels despite falling prices has weighed heavily on the market.Trading volumes meanwhile remained low with many investors away from their desks for the traditional Christmas and New Year holiday shutdown. The Frankfurt stock market closes for Christmas at the end of trading on Tuesday, while London and Paris will shut down at lunchtime on Wednesday.- Focus remains on oil -As we head towards the Christmas break and a short week, the main focus going forward is likely to remain on the recent volatility in the oil price, particularly if we get a fresh bout of selling pressure, said CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson. He added there were widespread concerns that further oil market declines could prompt instability in oil-producing countries like Venezuela, Angola, Nigeria and Ecuador, and of course not forgetting Russia, as these countries struggle to balance their books, against a weakening currency, and a much weaker oil price.Elsewhere, Asian equities also rose in thin trade Monday amid the festive season, tracking cues from Wall Street where stocks had also surged in a Fed-fuelled Santa Claus rally last week.Indications that the US Federal Reserve will not raise interest rates in the coming months helped reassure investors and stocks returned to an upward trajectory.Sydney soared 1.94 percent, Seoul gained 0.68 percent, Hong Kong climbed 1.26 percent and Shanghai was up 0.61 percent, while Tokyo closed flat.Wall Street stocks were mostly higher ahead of a heavy day of economic data releases Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.45 percent to 17,885.33 points in midday trading. The broad-based S&P 500 edged down 0.02 percent to 2,070.32, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index added 0.08 percent to 4,768.99.Investors were looking ahead to Tuesdays economic reports, which include the third estimate of third-quarter gross domestic product and durable goods orders for November. In Monday deals on the London Bullion Market, gold slid to $1,195.25 per ounce from $1,195.50 on Friday.
