UN Security Council members want North Korea meeting

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - North Koreas rights violations threaten the stability of East Asia, a majority of UN Security Council members said Friday, requesting a meeting on calls to refer Pyongyang to face crimes against humanity charges.North Koreas sole major ally China and Russia did not join in the request, sent in a letter to Chadian Ambassador Cherif Mahamat Zene, whose country holds the councils presidency for December.Australia, Britain, Chile, France, Jordan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, South Korea, Rwanda and the United States said in the letter that they were deeply concerned by the situation in communist North Korea. The 10 ambassadors pointed to the scale and gravity of human rights violations outlined in a UN commission of inquiry report released in February. These violations threaten to have a destabilizing impact on the region and the maintenance of international peace and security, they wrote in the letter obtained by AFP.The year-long inquiry heard testimony from North Korean exiles and documented a vast network of harsh prison camps holding up to 120,000 people along with cases of torture, summary executions and rape.Responsibility for these violations lies at the highest level of the secretive North Korean state, according to the inquiry led by Australian judge Michael Kirby, who said that the atrocities amounted to crimes against humanity. The 10 ambassadors asked that a meeting be held as early as possible in the month of December.Other than China and Russia, council members Argentina, Chad and Nigeria also did not join the push for North Koreas rights record to be discussed. The move came less than three weeks after a landmark resolution was adopted in a General Assembly committee condemning North Korean rights abuses and calling on the Security Council to consider referring Pyongyang to the International Criminal Court (ICC).UN diplomats said it was likely that China, which has veto power at the council, would block any move to refer North Korea to the ICC.Both Russia and China voted against the resolution in the General Assembly committee. The resolution was adopted by a vote of 111 to 19, with 55 abstentions. The General Assembly is due to vote on the resolution again this month.

Iran says it carried out air strikes in Iraq: report

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - A senior Iranian official said the countrys military had conducted air strikes against Islamic State jihadists in Iraq, in an interview with British newspaper The Guardian.Deputy foreign minister Ebrahim Rahimpour told the paper Iran conducted strikes for the defence of the interests of our friends in Iraq, who he defined as the Baghdad government and the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq, who are both fighting IS.In this matter, we did not have any coordination with the Americans. We have coordinated only with the Iraqi government, the newspaper quoted Rahimpour as saying. In general, every military operation to help the Iraqi government is according to their requests. It would be the first official confirmation of air strikes by Tehran since US officials said earlier this week the Iranian air force carried out attacks in Iraq.Iran at the time refused to confirm it had taken such action.Air strikes would be politically sensitive as Washington and Tehran are historic enemies despite finding themselves on the same side against IS.Iraqs prime minister Haider al-Abadi has said he had no knowledge of any Iranian air strikes.Rahimpour said Iran would intervene to prevent Iraq deteriorating like its neighbour Syria, torn apart by a civil war which has killed nearly 200,000 people and displaced more than half its population. We will not allow conditions in Iraq to descend to the level of Syria, which has been created by foreign players, Rahimpour told The Guardian. And certainly our assistance (to Iraq) is stronger than our assistance to Syria, because they are nearer to us.Iran has consistently denied having troops in Iraq, and was not invited to join a US-led military coalition against IS extremists, who have carved out a vast region of control in the country and neighbouring Syria.

Nine killed, 12 wounded in twin bomb attack in Somali town

MOGADISHU (AFP) - At least nine people were killed Friday in a twin bomb attack in the central Somali town of Baidoa, police said, the latest in a string of attacks.A suicide bomber detonated himself amongst a crowd of people drinking at a busy teashop in the town. We have so far counted at least nine civilians, among them journalists, who died in the attack, police officer Abdirasak Ali told AFP.Minutes later a second blast exploded as rescuers went to help those who had been wounded.A second explosion, a car loaded with explosives parked nearby, went off as rescuers rushed to the scene, and that caused most of the casualties, Ali added. He said at least 12 people were wounded. The attack comes a day after a new federal regional leader took power in Baidoa, some 250 kilometres (155 miles) northwest of the capital Mogadishu. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Somalias Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shebab rebels have previously carried out repeated attacks in the town as part of their fight to overthrow the countrys internationally-backed government.Witnesses described a scene of carnage, with bodies of wounded victims scattered around the blast site.I saw the dead body of seven civilians including a journalist, two other journalists were also wounded, said local resident Abdirahman Hussein. Many people were wounded so I fear that the number who are killed could increase. Recent Shebab attacks in Somalia have targeted key government and security sites in an apparent bid to discredit claims by the authorities and African Union troops that they are winning the war.On Thursday they wounded an MP and killed a former lawmaker in Mogadishu, while on Wednesday a Shebab suicide bomber killed four when they rammed a car packed with explosives into a United Nations convoy. The Shebab have also stepped up operations in neighbouring Kenya, and on Tuesday massacred 36 non-Muslim quarry workers in a Kenyan border town.

Golf: Ill Tiger shows progress but settles for 70

ORLANDO (AFP) - An ill Tiger Woods made his first eagle in 16 months on his way to a two-under par 70 in Fridays rain-hit second round of the Hero World Challenge. The former world number one, playing his first tournament since Augusts PGA Championship, closed with a double bogey after a two-hour rain delay to remain last in the 18-man event on three-over 147 after 36 holes. It really didnt feel that much different than it did yesterday, Woods said, alluding to his opening 77. I hit maybe two fewer worse shots. I hit it solid. Today I hit it close and made my putts. After fighting a morning fever and coughs during his round, Woods showed flashes of the form that brought him 14 major titles, four shy of the record set by Jack Nicklaus.I wasnt feeling my best, Woods said. I just had to stay hydrated and try to keep things down.Woods, ranked 24th, produced his first eagle since the second round of last years WGC event at Firestone by sinking a six-foot putt at the par-5 13th hole.At 14, he dropped the ball four feet from the cup and made the putt, then added a four-foot birdie putt at 16 and parred 17 before heavy rain struck Isleworth, a delay that would prevent the round from ending before darkness. When play resumed, Woods put his approach at 18 over the green, then botched a chip by leaving the ball only on the edge of the green. He pitched it to 10 feet but missed his bogey putt. Its not very good, Woods said of his short game. Its going to take more time to develop. Its a different motion, a different pattern.Woods said the swing changes he has undertaken with new consultant Chris Como have had an impact on his chipping as he looks to past styles to revamp his swing and win a major title for the first time since the 2008 US Open. The good news is I understand the process. I have made changes before. It takes time, Woods said.I dont forsee it being a two-year process like I did back (in the 1990s). I feel like Ive got the speed. Im starting to generate power and get the ball out there.Five strokes lower on the front nine than round one, Woods avoided the mistakes that marred round one, opening with a birdie after going out of bounds Thursday and making bogey at eight, where he made double bogey on day one.It was still a sign of rust for a player who once fired a 59 at Isleworth in a practice round.US Ryder Cupper Patrick Reed shot a 63 playing alongside Woods in round one, wearing a red shirt as Woods does on Sundays in his first event pairing with his boyhood idol.He seemed fine, Reed said. He didnt like the score but he hit some good shots out there. He knew what he was doing.Reed had five birdies and an eagle on the front nine and birdied 10 to spark dreams of a 59 of his own, but a bogey at 12 spoiled that hope even after birdies at 13 and 16 that left him sharing third with Englands Justin Rose on eight-under 136.Jordan Spieth was at five-under par for the second round on the 18th green when it became too dark for him to finish, leaving him atop the leaderboard at 11-under overall, two strokes in front of clubhouse leader Henrik Stenson of Sweden.Just wasnt a good idea to finish. I wouldnt have been able to see a putt, Spieth said. It wouldnt have made much sense.Steve Stricker also elected to wait for Saturday to make his final putt at 18.

Swimming: Manaudou sprint king as world records hit twelve

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - Florent Manaudou hammered home his status as king of the sprints as he set a new world record in winning the 50m freestyle at the World Short-Course Swimming Championships on Friday. The gargantuan Frenchman was not alone in setting a new global mark at the Hamad Aquatic Centre with a double strike from Katinka Hosszu and new records by the Netherlands and Denmark in the womens 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x50 medley respectively. It brings to 12 the number of world records set after three days of the five-day event. Not only were there five world records on Friday, Femke Heemskerk claimed two gold medals while there was a gold and silver for Sarah Sjostrom and Peter Berner of Hungary broke the 400m freestyle championship record set in April 1999 by Australian great Grant Hackett. Also notable was the end of Ryan Lochtes reign at the helm of the 200m individual medley, Japanese Kosuke Hagino wresting away the crown he had worn for the last four championships.Manaudous record was not the first of the night but it was dramatic. The 6ft 6ins swimmer has a distinctive high-armed windmill stroke which propelled him into the wall in a time of 20.26sec ahead of Marco Orsi of Italy and former Olympic champion Cesar Cielo. The Olympic champions time cut 0.04sec off the previous record held by South African Roland Schoeman since 2009 and the time of performance-enhancing suits.Manaudou was shocked by what he had done, saying: I didnt know I could swim so fast.I didnt aim to break the world record: it was not my main goal. That was to beat my two big rivals. I succeeded so this is my greatest satisfaction.I havent won in a world competition since the Olympics so I feel really good.Hosszu has already lived up to her Iron Lady nickname after battling back from opening night disappointment when she was upstaged by Spaniard Mireia Belmonte to clinch victory and a world record in last nights 100m backstroke. She returned Friday to become the first woman to dip under two minutes in the 200m backstroke, taking down Missy Franklins mark by 0.80sec in 1:59.23 ahead of Emily Seebohm of Australia and Japans Sayara Akase. She followed this up with another gold in world record time in the 100m individual medley, Hosszus time of 56.70 bringing victory over Siobhan-Marie OConnor of Great Britain with Seebohm getting her second medal of the night. Its pretty amazing. Today everything was clicking, said Hosszu. Some people might have thought there were problems after day one but I felt there were no problems -- just that Mireia (Belmonte) was in good shape.Being beaten is good sometimes. It gives extra motivation for the following days and next season.I am pretty satisfied with my performances today. I believed I could beat the world records today but I had to deliver.

Alpine skiing: Maze wins season-opening downhill

LAKE LOUISE (AFP) - Olympic champion Tina Maze won the season-opening womens World Cup downhill on Friday, while American speed queen Lindsey Vonn finished off the podium in her first race in almost a year.Slovenias Maze finished in a time of one minute, 50.98 seconds, topping runner up Anna Fenninger of Austria, who clocked 1:51.43. Liechtensteins Tina Weirather was third in 1:51.49.Vonn, who tore her right knee ligaments and broke a bone in her leg in a high-speed crash in February 2013, finished 0.85 seconds adrift of Maze. The injury caused the four-time overall World Cup champion to miss the Sochi Olympics earlier this year. The two-time Olympic gold medallist Maze claimed her 25th career World Cup win. She won the World Cup overall title in 2013 and also took gold in the giant slalom in Sochi.Just 24 hours after she posted the fastest time in the final training run in the Canadian Rockies, Fenninger delivered another solid charge down the mountain. The reigning Olympic super-G champion topped Weirather by just 0.06 seconds.Weirather got off to a quick start last season and was second in the World Cup overall points race when she crashed during a training run at the Olympics in February, causing her to miss the rest of the Sochi Games as well as the remainder of the 2014 season.

Oil prices fall as strong jobs report pushes up dollar

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The benchmark US oil price fell Friday to the lowest level in more than five years, hit by a stronger dollar after a blockbuster US jobs report for November.Global prices were already under pressure from OPECs recent decision to leave output unchanged despite ample supplies and from Saudi Arabias price cuts for oil exported to Asia and the United States.West Texas Intermediate for December delivery dropped 97 cents to $65.84 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was the lowest close since July 29, 2009, when WTI fell to $62.90.The international benchmark, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in January, settled at $69.07 a barrel in London trade, down 57 cents from Thursday. The US economy added a huge 321,000 jobs in November, the best job growth in nearly three years, the Labor Department reported. Upward revisions to the prior two months added 44,000 jobs and brought the yearly average to 241,000 a month. The dollar pushed higher, climbing to $1.2282 per euro and 121.52 yen.Citi Futures analyst Tim Evans noted that the greenbacks strength came on an upward trend over the past five months. A stronger dollar tends to make crude more expensive for buyers using weaker currencies. The positivity of the decent job creation is being offset in the crude market by headwinds from a pop higher in the US dollar, said Matt Smith of Schneider Electric.According to analysts, crude oil, which has lost about 40 percent of its value since June, also suffered from some technical factors Friday.Carl Larry of Frost & Sullivan said that many investors were reshuffling their portfolios before the end of the year and when they saw that oil prices had not benefited from strong jobs data in the US, the biggest consumer of crude oil, they decided it was time to sell.

Dollar gains on robust US jobs report

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - An unexpectedly strong US jobs report Friday sent the dollar sharply higher against the euro, yen and other majors. The US economys ability to churn out some 321,000 news jobs in November -- 90,000 more than had been predicted -- underscored the countrys divergence with Europe and Japan, both fighting off stagnation. The jump in job creation raised the chance, some analysts guessed, of an acceleration in the Federal Reserves move toward an interest rate hike, currently forecast for the middle of 2015. Yields on medium-term Treasury bonds shot up 10 basis points on the data, showing market expectations for an earlier rate rise. The report also showed the first hints of a possible quickening pace of wage gains -- something that would make the inflation-focused Fed sit up and take notice.Throughout this year, the Fed has been generally satisfied with the absolute number of jobs created, but the missing ingredient in the recipe for a rate hike has been wage growth, said Matt Weller at Forex.com.While it is only a one month sample, this much stronger rate of wage growth suggests the potential for demand-pull inflation, and an accompanying interest rate hike, in the first half of next year. The dollar pushed to $1.2283 per euro, the greenbacks best level since August 2012, and to 121.44 yen, the highest since July 2007.

Clarke faces decision day ahead of first India Test

Posted:

ADELAIDE (AFP) - Australia captain Michael Clarke faces a fitness test at training on Saturday to check on his chances of playing in next weeks first Test against India, coach Darren Lehmann said.Clarke, troubled by a third hamstring setback since August, ran at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday before heading to Adelaide to join the Australia squad later in the day.The skipper, who was one of the pallbearers and led the tributes at the funeral of his close friend and Test batsman Phillip Hughes on Wednesday, will be given every chance of taking the field in the series opener against India at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday. As long as hes fine to do the running and can bat (hell play), coach and selector Lehmann told reporters on Friday. He flies in this afternoon. Well get him batting tomorrow and see how he goes.Itll be case of if hes fine, hell play. Well just have to wait and see.Well be guided by medical staff, the captain himself, selectors. Well get together and assess what the plan is tomorrow.Clarke and the entire Test squad attended Hughess funeral in Macksville in northern New South Wales on Wednesday. On Thursday, Clarke attended a private cremation service with Hughes family in their home town while his teammates began to make their way to Adelaide.Hes pretty mentally strong, as you saw throughout the week, Lehmann said of Clarke should he lead Australia in what is shaping up as an emotional Test.He held himself together really well and led the team really well.Batsman Shaun Marsh has been added to Australias Test squad as cover for Clarke.Lehmann said it was too early to speculate who would be emotionally ready to start the Adelaide Test, given the traumatic lead-in to the series.Time will tell, but today well get out there and see how we go, he said prior to Australias first training session since Hughes was fatally struck by a bouncer in a domestic game.Hughes, 25, died last Thursday from bleeding on the brain, two days after being knocked unconscious by a bouncer in Sydney, throwing the cricketing world into mourning. Now its a matter of rallying around each other, rallying around his family and the whole CA (Cricket Australia) family, Lehmann said.He said he wouldnt expect Australia to be trained at full intensity for a few more days.Probably not today, but certainly by the weekend. By Sunday or Monday Id expect them to be going 100 percent, he said.Murali Vijay, stand-in skipper Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma all attended the Hughes funeral and were all playing in Indias final pre-Test tour game against a Cricket Australia XI in Adelaide on Friday.

New Zealand beats Pakistan in 2nd T20 by 17 runs to draw the series

Posted:

DUBAI: (Web Desk) - New Zealanad defeated Pakistan in the second Twenty-20 International at the Dubai International Stadium by 17 runs to draw the 2-match series 1 - 1.New Zealand batted first to score 144 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Pakistani bowlers did well to contain the Kiwis within 150 despite some brilliant hitting by Ronchi later down the innings. Devcich (26), Williamson (32) and Latham (26) all took starts to support Ronchis effort in which he made 31 runs off 21 balls with the help of a boundary and 2 sixes.New Zealand was contained under 150 through some excellent bowling by Raza Hasan and Umar Gul. Both did not let New Zealand score better than 1-a-ball during their 8 overs combined. However, Shahid Afridi and Sohail Tanvir proved expensive. Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul secured 2 wickets each while Mohammad Hafeez, Sohail Tanvir andRaza Hasan took 1 each.Pakistan seemed under pressure from the very beginning when Sarfraz Ahmad was gone for 1 on the fourth ball of the innings. The hawk-eye however showed later that the umpire got it terrible wrong as the ball was missing the stumps. Hafeez joined Ahmad Shahzad and though he looked good after hitting back-to-back boundaries in the second over, the third one saw him bubbling one back to Devcich who made no mistakes catching it close to the ground. Haris Sohail disappointed yet again. He was the next to go for 3. Ahmad Shahzad and Saad Nasim struggled a bit and took the score to 64 with their 40-run partnership but Saad Nasim was caught by Brownlie off Neeshams bowling on this occasion.Ahmad Shahzads shot selection was terrible considering he had already played 36 balls for his 33. Shahid Afridi joined Umar Akmal and gave crowd some moments to cheer but Umar Akmal was out bowled by Neesham at 10 while Pakistans total had only reached 97 and they still needed 48 runs to seal the series.Shahid Afridi continued from the other end. But after hitting a massive third six off Neeshams bowling over mid-wicket, Shahid Afridi lost his wicket the very next ball when he tried to hook the bouncer and only managed to nick it to teh wicket-keeper.Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir did not do much harm to the Kiwi effort and all the team was out for 127 runs.Neesham and Mills got 3 wickets each, Devcich got 2 while Vettori and Henri shared 1 each. Anton Devcich was the man of the match for his 21 runs and all important 2 wickets. Luke Ronchi was declared the Man of the Series for his 64 runs in 2 matches.

Venezuela bus crash kills at least 8, injures 13

CARACAS (AP) - A water truck collided with a bus Wednesday on a busy provincial Venezuelan highway, killing at least eight people and injuring 13, according to the countrys fire chief.Preliminary investigations suggest that the brakes failed as the truck was going downhill and it slammed into the bus during the early morning rush near the central city of Miranda, said William Martinez, commander of the national fire service. The head-on collision destroyed the bus, and rescue crews had to cut through the steel frame of the vehicle to reach some of the victims as traffic backed up for miles.Details on the conditions of the injured passengers were not immediately available. They were taken to hospitals near the crash scene, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Caracas.

Orion flight marks 'milestone' for US space program: NASA

Posted:

CAPE CANAVERAL (AFP) - The US space agencys Orion capsule circled the Earth twice before plunging into the ocean Friday in a flawless test flight that NASA called a significant milestone in the journey to Mars. The mission was the first in more than four decades of a new US spacecraft intended to carry humans to the Moon or beyond. The unmanned vessel soared into space at 7:05 am (1205 GMT) atop a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket that rumbled and roared as it climbed into the pastel skies over the Florida coast at sunrise, leaving a plume of smoke in its wake.It was just a blast to see how well the rocket did, said Orion program manager Mark Geyer, after technical issues with the rocket and wind gusts delayed the first launch attempt Thursday.Being near a launch -- a rocket that big -- you can feel it.The four-and-a-half hour flight was picture-perfect and a significant milestone for Americas space program, said NASA commentator Rob Navias. It tested crucial systems like the heat shield and parachute splashdown. NASA engineers will carefully study the data it collected in the days and weeks to come to see how the capsule withstood the stress of space flight.Live video images from the spacecraft showed stunningly high views of Earth as well as the capsules dramatic return to the Pacific Ocean.A trio of NASA astronauts watched on large televisions at Kennedy Space Center and bumped fists when Orion splashed down, as the packed press room erupted in cheers. We have kind of turned a corner from the post shuttle period and it is nice to see the new vehicle up in space, said astronaut Rex Walheim, still grinning after the successful test.It has got a lot of pieces of the puzzle to go yet but we are making tremendous progress, he told AFP.The United States has been unable to send astronauts to the International Space Station since the shuttle program ended in 2011 after three decades, leaving no option but to pay Russia to carry astronauts on its Soyuz capsules at a cost of $71 million per seat.- Peak height -The spacecraft made two loops around the Earth, first orbiting about as high as the International Space Station, which circles at an altitude of about 270 miles (430 kilometers). Then, a second stage engine burn propelled the spacecraft higher than any vessel meant to carry people since the Apollo 17 moon mission in 1972.About three hours into the flight, at 10:11 am (1511 GMT), the spacecraft reached its peak height of 3,604 miles above the Earth.Four hours 24 minutes after launch, the spacecraft floated back to Earth, aided by a trio of parachutes, before plunging into the waters 600 miles to the west of Baja California, to be retrieved by the US Navy.An analysis of sophisticated sensors on the capsule should let NASA know how the heat shield performed and if the temperature inside remained survivable for a potential crew. The spacecrafts exterior heated to 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,200 Celsius) during its re-entry to Earths atmosphere at a velocity of 20,000 miles per hour.- Future missions -Potential future missions for Orion, which can fit four people at a time, include a trip to lasso an asteroid and a journey to Mars by the 2030s.I think its a big day for the world, for people who know and love space, said NASA administrator Charles Bolden.NASA has already spent $9.1 billion on Orion and the powerful rocket meant to propel it with crew on board, the Space Launch System (SLS).Another unmanned test flight is slated for 2018. The first Orion test flight with a crew on board is scheduled for 2021, when total costs are projected to reach $19 to $22 billion.
