Oil tanks in Libya terminal ablaze after firefight

Posted:

BENGHAZI (AFP) - Three storage tanks at one of Libyas main oil terminals were ablaze on Friday after being hit by a rocket during fighting between Islamists and pro-government forces, officials said. The rocket was fired on Thursday by militiamen from Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn), a coalition of Islamist fighters. One tank was hit, said the regions security spokesman Ali al-Hassi, before the fire spread on Friday to two other full tanks at Al-Sidra terminal.Witnesses said huge columns of smoke filled the sky over Al-Sidra and were being blown further east towards Ras Lanuf terminal. They expressed concern that the fire could spread to other tanks at Al-Sidra and cause an environmental disaster if not brought under control.National Oil Company spokesman Mohamed al-Harari urged everyone to respect the neutrality of oil terminals, adding that the tanks that were hit were full and ready for export. On Thursday, the Islamists killed 22 soldiers in a surprise attack during which they used speedboats in a failed bid to seize Al-Sidra and other terminals in the eastern region of Libya known as the oil crescent.Hassi said the army repelled the Islamists. On Friday, the fighting had subsided but reports said the situation was still tense. The latest clashes pushed oil prices higher in Asia on Friday, with US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for February delivery rising 28 cents to $56.12, while Brent for February gained 13 cents to $60.37.Military and medical sources said 18 soldiers and a Fajr Libya fighter were killed in Sirte, and another four soldiers were slain in Al-Sidra.Most of the dead soldiers belonged to the 136th battalion responsible for monitoring a power plant west of Sirte, the sources said.Since the clashes erupted on December 13, Libyan oil production has fallen to nearly 350,000 barrels per day compared with 800,000 previously, according to industry experts.More than three years after dictator Moamer Kadhafi was toppled and killed in a NATO-backed revolt, Libya is still awash with weapons and powerful militias, and has rival parliaments as well as governments. The Islamists say they have been mandated by the rival parliament based in Tripoli to liberate Libyas oil terminals.

Third priest killed in dangerous southern Mexico

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AP) A priest was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head, his diocese said Friday, marking the latest in series of abductions, attacks and highway robberies against Roman Catholic clerics in an area of southern Guerrero state dominated by drug cartels.Rev. Gregorio Lopez Gorostieta is the third Catholic priest to have been killed in the region this year, and the first to die since the federal government launched a special, stepped-up security operation in the area following the disappearance of 43 teachers college students three months ago.The motive in Lopez Gorostietas killing remains unclear; Bishop Maximino Martinez said a group had been seen lurking around the seminary where the priest taught on the outskirts of Ciudad Altamirano, Guerrero, on Sunday and Monday. Lopez Gorostieta was apparently kidnapped by the gang early Monday; his truck was found abandoned two days later. This is another priest added to those who have died for their love of Christ, Bishop Martinez said. Enough already of so much pain, of so many murders. Enough already of so much crime. Enough extortions. That was an apparent reference to the protection payments that the local drug gang, the Knights Templar, demand from business owners in Ciudad Altamirano. One business owner, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisals, said his family had been forced to pay thousands of pesos (dollars) each year to the gang for the right to operate a pharmacy. While the Rev. Jesus Mendoza Zaragoza said gangs have also demanded protection payments from parish priests in the nearby resort city of Acapulco, Lopez Gorostieta didnt have a parish or collect tithes. But Bishop Martinez said there could be other motives: Priests have received threats when they refuse to perform quickie marriages or baptisms for drug gang members. The church normally requires extensive paperwork before performing such ceremonies. At times, if they ask for a baptism and you dont do it, they start to threaten you, Martinez said. They want a marriage, or a blessing for a car or a home, he said, and wont take no for an answer. The Mexican Council of Bishops issued a statement saying we demand authorities clear up this and so many other crimes that have caused pain in so many homes, and ensure that it is punished. But Mendoza Zaragoza said there appears to be little likelihood authorities will find the killers, because they havent done so in past cases. The government offers to investigate, but nothing is ever known, he said referring to the other recent killing of a priest in the Altamirano diocese. In September, the battered body of the Rev. Ascension Acuna Osorio was found floating in the Balsas river near his parish of San Miguel Totolapan, near Ciudad Altamirano. Guerrero state prosecutors said the priests body had head wounds, but it was unclear whether they were caused by the body being dragged by the current, or whether he had been killed before being dumped in the river. Martinez said authorities never offered more information on the investigation into his death.Residents of San Miguel Totolapan told reporters that Acuna Osorio was well liked in the town, but they were afraid to speak more about his death, or the gang that operates in the area. The town is an area dominated by the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel, which has been implicated in the mass killing of 43 students in September in the nearby city of Iguala. The area is so dangerous that Martinez said one priest had been briefly kidnapped in the mountains above San Miguel Totolapan by cartel gunmen who complained the priest had been speaking in favor of La Familia the name of a rival drug cartel. The priest had to quickly explain he had been preaching in favor of family values, not the rival cartel.Nor have authorities cleared up the killing of a Ugandan priest whose body was found in a clandestine grave in a nearby Guerrero diocese in November.Father John Ssenyondo, 55, had been kidnapped about six months earlier. His body was later identified as one of 13 found in a clandestine grave discovered Nov. 2 in the town of Ocotitlan.Ssenyondo, a member of the Combonian order, was abducted April 30 in the town of Santa Cruz after celebrating Mass, when a group of people in an SUV intercepted his car.Several priests have also been victims of highway assaults in Guerrero in recent months that appear to be attempted robberies.Church officials also believe three abductions of church workers in March may have been intended to discourage priests from leading protests against rampant violence. The three were released unharmed. The Catholic Multimedia Center, a church group, reports that eight priests were killed in the past two years in Mexico now nine including Lopez Gorostietas death and that two priests remain missing.

South Africa reach 270-2 at stumps vs West Indies

Posted:

PORT ELIZABETH: (AP) - Dean Elgar hit a career-best score and Faf du Plessis stroked an unbeaten 99 as South Africa continued to dominate the West Indies on the first day of the second test at St. Georges Park on Friday.Elgar made 121 and shared a 179-run stand for the second wicket with Du Plessis as the Proteas went to stumps on 270-2 after West Indies had won the toss and asked the hosts to bat.The West Indies lost the first test by an innings and 220 runs, and continued to look well short of the quality required to be competitive against the No. 1-ranked side in the world. The tourists twice dropped Du Plessis, while Elgar survived a missed stumping and there were also several missed run-out opportunities.Despite those chances, captain Denesh Ramdins decision to bowl first on a slow pitch appeared ill-advised, and his opposite number Hashim Amla confirmed that he wanted to bat anyway.Although the West Indies bowling was more disciplined than it was in the first test, and the seamers did find some assistance early on, it was no more penetrative.Alviro Petersen was the only batsman to fall during the first two sessions, as he spooned a short, wide delivery from Shannon Gabriel to the fielder at cover to depart for 17.Egar and Du Plessis took full control thereafter, constructing their fourth century stand in tests. The sluggish pace of the wicket did limit the speed at which they were able to score, but they accelerated with Elgar taking 127 deliveries to reach his half-century and Du Plessis requiring 137.However they accelerated at the start of the final session, which brought a total of 113 runs, with Elgar reaching his third test century. The left-hander fell in the final hour of the day when he pushed at a wide delivery to feather it through to the wicketkeeper and give debutant Kenroy Peters his first test wicket.Amla accompanied Du Plessis through to the close of play, reaching stumps on 17 not out.Peters was one of three changes to the West Indies side, with Gabriel and Jason Holder also coming in and Jermaine Blackwood, Sheldon Cottrell and the injured Kemar Roach all dropping out.South Africa made two changes, one of which saw Temba Bavuma become the first black African specialist batsman to play for the Proteas. The 24-year-old replaced the injured Quinton de Kock, while the other change saw legspinner Imran Tahir preferred to fast bowler Kyle Abbott.

Two 'jihadists' shot dead at Cairo checkpoint

Posted:

CAIRO (AFP) - Police on Friday shot dead two members of Egypts most active jihadist group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the interior ministry announced. It claimed one of the men killed at a checkpoint east of the capital had been responsible for the militant groups operations in the Cairo region.Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (Partisans of Jerusalem), which has allied itself to the Islamic State group, is based in the Sinai Peninsula, and claims to be behind most of the major attacks on the security forces since the army ousted elected Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.Police spotted the jihadists car at a checkpoint, the ministry statement said. The occupants of the car opened fire to try to get away, but the police fired back, it added.Three policemen and two civilians there by chance were injured and the two jihadists were killed, it said. The ministry said the two men killed had taken part in several attacks on the army and the police, including one on November 28 in Cairo that killed a brigadier and a soldier.Police also found guns and ammunition in an east Cairo apartment used by one of them.Militants have killed scores of security personnel since Morsi was overthrown, saying the attacks are in retaliation for a brutal government campaign against his supporters. The widespread crackdown has left at least 1,400 people dead and more than 15,000 jailed. Most of the deaths occurred when police stormed two pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo in August last year.Hundreds more have been sentenced to death after perfunctory mass trials.

Man United thrashes Newcastle 3-1 as Rooney strikes twice

Posted:

MANCHESTER, England: (AP) - Wayne Rooney scored twice in the first half as resurgent Manchester United easily beat Newcastle 3-1 Friday to strengthen its grip on third place in the Premier League.Rooney was set up well by his teammates for both goals as Radamel Falcao met a long cross into the area in the 23rd minute, sliding to reach the ball at the far post and square a perfect pass for Rooney to tap into an empty net.Falcao then helped United win possession just outside the Newcastle area in the 36th, and Juan Mata laid the ball off for a wide-open Rooney to slot a low shot inside the post.Rooney then helped set up the third by pinging a 35-yard pass to Robin van Persie, who headed past Jak Alnwick, before Papiss Cisse scored a late consolation for the Magpies from the penalty spot.Louis van Gaals decision to cancel Christmas Day training did not backfire. United was the best team for most of the match.Falcao had one of his best performances in a United shirt up front while Mata was a constant threat, threading dangerous passes through Newcastles stretched, unorganized defense.Rooney again excelled in a midfield role, although Newcastles defending for all three goals was sloppy as Alan Pardews team fell to its fourth straight loss.United, on the other hand, remain 10 points behind leader Chelsea thanks to its seventh win in eight matches.Newcastle created the best chances early on, but United finally sparked into life when Rooney found Van Persie with a pin-point pass, but Alnwick raced off his line and forced the Dutchman wide.David de Gea then saved United with an acrobatic dive to deny Daryl Janmaat, who had surged forward from the back. Despite the pressure from Newcastle, the hosts took the lead with an impressive team goal.Rooney started the move, laying the ball off to Mata, who chipped toward the back post after the Newcastle defense backed off. Falcao hooked the ball back across the box and Rooney tapped in from close range.Mata again played a key role for the second goal, sliding the ball through the away defense to the England captain, who tapped in past Alnwick.Eight minutes after the break, the game was all but over as Rooney looked up and floated a 35-yard pass over the away defense to find Van Persie, who nodded past Alnwick. It didnt matter that Phil Jones tripped Jack Colback as he entered the box and Cisse slotted the penalty perfectly into the top right-hand corner.
