Tennis: Top seed Kvitova withdraws from Eastbourne

EASTBOURNE (AFP) - Wimbledon holder Petra Kvitova will begin her title defence in a week without any official grass-court matches following her Monday withdrawal from the Eastbourne International.I didnt feel well when I came here last Thursday, said Kvitova. I have a sore throat.I have to stay in bed and drink tea and rest. I had to make this decision. I hope to be fine for Wimbledon. Million of smokers may have undiagnosed lung disease

MIAMI (AFP) - More than half of current and former smokers who can pass basic lung function tests may suffer from lung diseases that have gone undiagnosed, researchers said Monday.The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine included nearly 9,000 people, aged 45-80, who had smoked at least a pack of cigarettes a day for 10 years.About half of those in the study were considered disease-free based on their lung-function tests, said the JAMA article.But when researchers looked at other criteria, including respiratory symptoms, CT scans, medications use and quality of life issues, they found that 55 percent of the disease-free study participants had some form of respiratory related impairment.Many were in the early stages of chronic pulmonary obstruction disease, or COPD, which is the third-leading killer in the United States. Forty-two percent had emphysema or airway thickening, while 23 percent had significant shortness of breath.Smokers who have normal lung-function tests often have significant respiratory disease. Many of those smokers likely have the early stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, said Elizabeth Regan, lead author and assistant professor of medicine at National Jewish Health. We hope these findings will help debunk the myth of the healthy smoker and highlight the importance of smoking prevention and cessation to prevent lung disease and other long-term effects of smoking.

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro held steady against the dollar on Monday as signs mounted that Greece was making some progress with creditors over its bailout after five months of deadlock.Traders appeared cautiously optimistic that a deal with the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund could be taking shape.Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem said Monday that Athenss new proposals to reach a deal were a welcome step and a step in a positive direction, so I think it is also an opportunity to get that deal later this week and that is what we will work for.Greece offered economic reforms in exchange for the last payment of 7.2 billion euros from the current program. Without that money, Greece may not be able to make a 1.5-billion-euro repayment to the IMF due on June 30, risking a default and possible chaotic exit from the eurozone.If the anecdotes are correct, the odds of a deal are higher than they were late last week but still are barely better than 50-50, said Moodys Analytics.The prospect of a Greek deal pushed European equity markets sharply higher, while Wall Street stocks had a good day, sending the Nasdaq to a new record close.It looks like Greeks are going to give ground on actions on spending and it may just be enough to get to the finish line, said Alan Skrainka, chief investment officer at Cornerstone Wealth Management.The euro traded at $1.1340 around 2100 GMT, little changed from its Friday level of $1.1349.Interestingly, the FX market only seems marginally interested in what is going on in Greece, said Kathleen Brooks of Forex.com.This headline-driven activity is likely to last until a final decision has been made on Greece, which should happen by the end of this week.... Malala presses World Bank, UN to set goals on education

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai urged the World Bank and UN on Monday to raise the focus of education in their new millenium goals.Malala, who in 2012 survived a severe gunshot in the head for her support of girls schools in Pakistan, met with World Bank President Jim Yong Kim to discuss the coming package of official Sustainable Development Goals the United Nations plans to release later this year.It is very important that we raise our voices to speak out for girls deprived of a secondary education, Malala said.To help all girls and boys achieve their full potential, we should make sure the Sustainable Development Goals include a commitment to fund a 12-year quality and free education for all children, especially girls, the 17-year-old said.In September the United Nations will weigh proposals for the Sustainable Development Goals, a series of targets for countries to achieve over the next 15 years. They will replace the Millenium Development Goals created in 2000 for the first 15 years of the century.A meeting is scheduled in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in mid-July to find ways to finance the new targets.

30 killed in northeast Nigeria by 2 girl suicide bombers

BAUCHI (AP) - Two girls blew themselves up on Monday near a crowded mosque in northeast Nigerias biggest city, killing about 30 people, witnesses said.It is the fourth suicide bombing this month in Maiduguri, which is the birthplace of the Boko Haram Islamic extremist group.Fishmonger Idi Idrisa said one teenager exploded as she approached the mosque crowded with people from the nearby Baga Road fish market, performing afternoon prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.The second teen appeared to run away and blew up further away, killing only herself, he said.Civilian defense fighter Sama Ila Abu said he counted at least 30 corpses as he helped collect the dead.Both men said said there were many injured.Boko Haram has kidnapped hundreds and hundreds of girls and women and the numbers of female suicide bombers has raised fears that it is using the captives in its campaign.A military bomb disposal expert has told the AP that most bombs carried by girls and women have remote detonation devices, meaning the carrier cannot control the explosion.Boko Haram has stepped up attacks since Nigerias new President Muhammadu Buhari announced the military command center is moving from the capital Abuja to Maiduguri in Borno State.The attacks come as Nigeria and its neighbors are preparing to strengthen a multinational army that this year drove Boko Haram out of towns and villages where it had set up a so-called Islamic caliphate.But bombings and hit-and-run attacks have continued, along with cross-border raids.On Thursday, a group of the extremists attacked two towns in neighboring Niger, killing at least 40 people, the government said.In its first attack on Chad, suicide bombers a week ago attacked two buildings including the national police academy in NDjamena, killing at least 33 people.

Oil Prices rise with focus on Greece, Iran

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rose modestly on Monday as dealers focused on hopes for a Greek bailout deal and a possible return of Iranian supplies to an oversupplied global market. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for July delivery edged up seven cents to $59.68 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Brent North Sea crude for August closed at $63.34 a barrel in London, up 32 cents from Fridays settlement.Eurozone leaders, holding an emergency summit in Brussels on Monday, were cautiously optimistic about eleventh-hour reform proposals from Greece as they met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Brussels.The president of the European Union, Donald Tusk, said new reform offers made by the leftist Greek government were the first real proposals for many weeks from the government, giving hope for an end to the five-month standoff between the Greek government and its EU and International Monetary Fund creditors before a June 30 deadline. If the talks fail, Greece will likely default on an IMF debt payment of around 1.5 billion euros ($1.7 billion), possibly leading to its exit from the eurozone.Nevertheless, Daniel Ang of Phillip Futures in Singapore said Irans negotiations with world powers over its nuclear program are going to give headwinds for... prices this week.If Tehran and six powers which want to restrict its nuclear activities reach agreement, the power have agreed to gradually scale back sanctions imposed since 2012 that have slashed Irans oil exports.A return of Iranian supplies could cause another round of oversupply in the global market, Ang said.

India tour to Zimbabwe in doubt over broadcaster

HARARE (AP) - Zimbabwe cricket officials say they will meet with their Indian counterparts at the ICCs annual conference this week in Barbados in an attempt to save next months limited-overs series.India could pull out of the tour because of the role of broadcaster Ten Sports, which holds the television rights for Zimbabwes home series. Ten Sports is part of the Essel Group, the company planning to set up a Twenty20 league to rival the Indian cricket boards IPL.Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Wilson Manase says there are issues that need to be resolved and Indias trip could be postponed to next year.India was meant to play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 games in Zimbabwe from July 10, a significant money-spinner for the struggling Zimbabwe board.

Karachi: Death toll from heat wave reaches 429

KARACHI (Dunya News) - The death toll from devastating heat wave across Sindh, compounded by high humidity, power cuts and low water consumption because of Ramadan fasting, has risen to 429, Dunya News Reported.Sources said that hundreds of patients suffering from the heat wave are being treated at government hospitals.Despite light showers in some part of the city, the temperature was soaring as high as 42 degrees Celsius on Monday, leaving many hospitalised for heat exhaustion and heatstroke.According to Jinnah Hospital’s spokesperson Doctor Seemi Jamali, 200 people died at the hospital in the past three days due to ailments caused by intense heat wave in the city.At least 64 deaths were reported at the Civil Hospital, 22 at the Liaquat National Hospital, 15 died at the Zia-ud-Din Hospital, 17 deaths were reported at the Indus Hospital and 23 at the Qatar Hospital.Another 69 deaths were reported in different KMC hospitals in the city, while 8 people died in New Karachi hospital and 7 in Lyari General Hospital.The Sindh provincial government has imposed a state of emergency at all hospitals, cancelling leave for doctors and other medical staff and increasing stocks of medical supplies.On the other hand, Pakistan Rangers Sindh has established ten Heat Stroke Relief Centres at different locations in Karachi to provide relief to the citizens who are affected due to extreme heat wave.

Power crisis: CM Sindh orders closing down markets at 9 pm

KARACHI: (Dunya News) – Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah has on Monday directed to shut down the markets at 9 pm in view of the power crisis, reported Dunya News.To save the electricity, CM Sindh has ordered to close down the markets at 9 pm and has also directed to use air conditioners after 11 am in the government offices. He also directed to light only the alternate street lights and to keep close the sign boards and billboards powered by electricity.CM Sindh also called a meeting of the K-Electric officials to find a solution of the power crisis.

KARACHI: (Dunya News) – Continual rain in Karachi has on Monday made the weather pleasant a bit but the temperature and humidity are still relatively higher. Although citizens seem relieved after slight drop in temperature yet they are praying for more rain so that the temperature may drop further as 370 people have already died due to extreme weather, reported Dunya News.Karachi has seen extreme temperature during the last few days and even today the temperature of the city was 42.5 degrees Celsius. After extremely hot conditions, there was rain in some areas of the city including Liaquatabad, North Nazimabad, Federal B Area and Orangi Town.In the evening, there were drizzling in Gulshan Iqbal, University Road and some other areas. According to Met office, there are strong chances of rain in Karachi on Tuesday and Wednesday after which there will be gradual decrease in the temperature as well.

Zardari pens letter to PM regarding loadshedding

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has on Monday written a letter to Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif regarding intense load shedding. Zardari said that steps should be taken to improve the situation, reported Dunya News.The letter to the PM states that Sindh is facing acute shortage of electricity and steps should be taken to remedy the situation in view of extreme heat.The letter further stated that some parts of Sindh are facing up to 20 hours of load shedding every day.

Football: Brazil will not appeal Neymar ban

SANTIAGO (AFP) - Brazil said Monday they will not appeal against a four-match ban on captain Neymar which will rule him out of the rest of the Copa America tournament.The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said the Barcelona superstar would leave the team base in Santiago on Monday.During a meeting on Sunday night between Neymar and the technical management it was decided that the CBF would respect CONMEBOLs decision, said a CBF statement.Neymar himself said he couldnt bare to stick around now that hes no longer involved in matches.Where Iam at right now, I would always be with the team, pushing my teammates towards victory, but staying here just to train, that would kill me from the inside...without any pleasure, the forward wrote on his Instagram account.I was waiting with great faith and hope that I could continue playing with Brazil in this Copa, unfortunately that has not been possible for me.I know that my presence in the team is important, as is that of all the other players who, more than ever, must remain concentrated on the forthcoming matches.Its awful training without preparing for something and such a situation would run the risk of me picking up an accidental injury, which would make things even more difficult.Neymar was sent off at the end of Brazils Copa game against Colombia last Wednesday when he appeared to headbutt an opposing player.The South American confederation, CONMEBOL, banned him for four matches on Friday. Brazil had indicated they wanted to appeal and protested at Neymars treatment by referees during the tournament.The coaching staff and the player hope that the same rigour with which CONMEBOL punished Neymar will be applied in all competitions organised by the entity, the statement added.The coaching staff of the Brazilian squad regret the loss of another important player for this tournament.The Brazilian squad said Neymar is leaving the delegation which is based at the Sheraton hotel in Santiago on Monday.Brazil ensured they went into the quarter-finals as top team from Group C by beating Venezuela 2-1 on Sunday. They will now face Group B runners-up Paraguay on Saturday.
