Tunisia cannot face jihadists alone, president says

PORT EL KANTAOUI (AFP) - Tunisia cannot stand up to the jihadist threat alone, President Beji Caid Essebsi said Friday after a gunman killed 28 people at a tourist resort, calling for a unified global strategy. We note that Tunisia faces an international movement. It cannot respond alone to this. On the same day at the same time France has been the target of such an operation, and Kuwait too, Essebsi told AFP.This proves the need for a global strategy, and that all democratic countries must now join forces. This is worse than terrible, he said of the attack at a beach resort in Sousse, about 140 kilometres (87 miles) south of Tunis, packed with holidaymakers. We thought we were protected from that.I hope this is the last time, because we are determined to take the most painful measures to deal with an even more painful scourge.Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring, has seen a surge in radical Islam since veteran president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was ousted in the 2011 revolution. In October 2013, a suicide bomber blew himself up in a botched attack on a beach in Sousse while security forces foiled another planned attack nearby.Fridays shooting was the worst in modern-day Tunisia and came after a March attack on the Bardo National Museum in Tunis killed 21 foreign tourists and a policeman.

Dozens killed as Somali Shebab 'overrun' African Union base

MOGADISHU (AFP) - Dozens of soldiers were killed Friday when Somalias Shebab insurgents overran an African Union base, witnesses said, describing intense fighting which left corpses strewn around. The fighting was the heaviest ever around this area, the Shebab fighters took full control of the base and killed many soldiers, said Alinur Mohamed, a local elder in Lego village, 100 kilometres (62 miles) northwest of the capital Mogadishu.Witnesses said they had seen as many as 50 bodies but the reports were impossible to independently confirm. Some bodies were reportedly beheaded. The military outpost was manned by around 100 Burundian soldiers who are part of the 22,000 strong African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).Residents said the dawn raid started when a suicide bomber drove a car loaded with explosives into the entrance of the base, before dozens of militants armed with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades began their assault.Ahmed Bulle, another elder, said the toll could be higher still as many bodies were strewn around the base.He said the militants had also looted the base, carting away weapons, ammunition and vehicles. The Shebab militants took control of the area completely -- the death toll could be more than 50. There are many dead bodies most of them in military uniforms, Bulle said.A Shebab spokesman said the militants had taken control of the base killing dozens and had raised their flag and seized weapons. The Black Islamic flag is flying over the main base of AMISOM in Lego this morning and the dead bodies of the enemy are scattered around the area, the mujahedeen fighters have taken all their military supplies, Mohamed Abu-Yahya, a Shebab commander said.A spokesman AMISOM confirmed that an attack and gun battle had taken place but could not provide any casualty figures. This morning there was an attack on our camp at Lego, said Lieutenant Colonel Paul Njuguna, adding that fighting continued for hours with reinforcements sent to the base, located on the main road between Mogadishu and the western regional capital of Baidoa.Shebab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage praised the attack.Today is a happy day for the Muslim nation, the mujahedeen fighters have managed to storm a base stationed by apostates and the African Christians who invaded our country, especially those from Burundi, he said.If the death toll is confirmed Fridays attack would be one of the deadliest single incidents since AMISOM soldiers arrived in Somalia eight years ago.In 2011, as many as 70 Burundian soldiers died in battle in Mogadishu.AU envoy to Somalia Maman Sidikou condemned the attack and said he regrets the losses recorded and registers his solidarity with the government and people of Burundi, without giving details of numbers killed. The Al-Qaeda affiliate is fighting to overthrow Somalias Western-backed government which is propped up and protected by AMISOM.Under military pressure at home, Shebab is increasingly turning its attention to Kenya where it has launched a string of recent deadly assaults, as well as focusing on guerrilla style warfare in Somalia. The Islamic militants commonly step up their attacks during Islams holy fasting month of Ramadan. On Wednesday six people were killed in a suicide attack in Mogadishu on a diplomatic convoy from the United Arab Emirates.

Two men killed by gorings in Spain bull-runs

MADRID (AFP) - Two men aged 40 and 80 have died this week after being gored during festive bull-runs in Spain, officials said on Friday. The 80-year-old died on Wednesday of his injuries two days after he was gored in the stomach in the town of Ampolla de Mar in Catalonia, northeastern Spain. The towns mayor Francesc Arasa said the victim was a regular at bull-runs and was fit despite his age.The man was gored by one of three heifers that were set loose as a prelude to the main bull run.He was behind a barrier but failed to get out of the way when a heifer poked its horns through the bars and gored him two or three times in the stomach, Arasa said. The man suffered major blood loss which damaged his liver and kidneys and he died two days later. The fiesta was halted after the incident. It is the first time someone has been killed in this village in the bull-runs, Arasa said.In a similar incident in the western town of Coria, a 40-year old man died of a heart attack in hospital after being gored in the chest and belly on Wednesday, a spokesman for the Extremadura regional authorities told AFP.A video published on the internet showed the huge black bull lifting the man off the ground as it thrust its horns through the bars meant to protect participants in the towns bullring. The bull was slaughtered on Thursday, officials said.On Thursday night, a man aged 23 was hurt in another bull-run in Coria but his life was not in danger. The events were held to mark the popular folk festival of Saint John, in which revellers across Spain run alongside huge fighting bulls and in some places jump through bonfires.Unfortunately in a festival like this, these things happen from time to time, Corias mayor Jose Manuel Garcia told reporters. It is a very dangerous festival, with bulls running through the streets and a high risk of accidents.Spains biggest and most popular bull-running festival runs from July 6 to 14 in Pamplona, northern Spain. That San Fermin fiesta, made famous by the US writer Ernest Hemingway, draws hundreds of thousands of revellers from numerous countries.Fifteen people have died in San Fermin bull-runs since 1911.

KARACHI (AFP) - Pakistan cricket selectors Friday announced medium-pacer Rahat Ali and batsman Babar Azam as replacements for injured fast bowler Wahab Riaz and spinning all-rounder Haris Sohail for the Test series in Sri Lanka.Left-arm fast bowler Riaz injured his bowling arm on the first day of the ongoing second Test in Colombo on Thursday and was subsequently ruled out of the match and the following third and final Test.Sohail had injured his knee ahead of the second Test so was also unavailable to play.Azam and Rahat will replace injured Sohail and Riaz for the Test series against Sri Lanka. Euro slips ahead of crunch weekend in Greece crisis

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro edged lower Friday ahead of a make-or-break weekend for Greece, with the country under warning to accept the new deal from creditors or be left to default on its debts.Greeces official creditors offered Athens a five-month, 12-billion-euro extension of its bailout program but said it must seal the deal this weekend to avoid an IMF default next week. The plan would include an immediate disbursement of 1.8 billion euros to help Greece meet a payment of 1.5 billion euros due to the IMF on Tuesday. But hours after the offer was delivered, the Greek government said it cannot accept the proposal, saying the reforms demanded alongside the bailout extension would be recessionary and the funding insufficient.Boris Schlossberg of BK Asset Management said foreign exchange markets were at a virtual standstill... as traders awaited further developments in the Greek negotiations with EU.Eurozone finance ministers will gather in Brussels on Saturday to see if a final deal can be sealed. But they have also warned that they would discuss a plan B if Greece has rejected the creditors offer.

Kerry arrives in Vienna seeking to seal Iran nuclear deal

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived late Friday in Vienna seeking to wrap up a nearly two-year quest for an accord curbing Irans nuclear ambitions, but with both sides warning a deal is far from done.Kerry was expected to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Saturday, three days before a Tuesday deadline for a deal that officials warn may be missed by a few days.Frances Laurent Fabius and other foreign ministers were due to arrive over the weekend. Some major problems exist which are still blocking the work... but in other areas we have made good progress, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told state television from the Austrian capital earlier Friday.Overall, the work is moving ahead slowly and with difficulty, he added. His assessment was echoed by a Western diplomat involved in the talks, who said that several key issues, including future UN inspections and the timing of sanctions relief, remain extremely problematic. The most difficult issues need to be resolved in the coming days: transparency, inspections, PMD (possible military dimensions of Irans nuclear programme), sanctions... On the major issues there is major disagreement, the diplomat said. The P51 -- the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany -- want Iran to curtail its nuclear activities in order to make any push to make nuclear weapons all but impossible. The deal, it is hoped, would end a standoff dating back to 2002 that has threatened to escalate into armed conflict and poisoned the Islamic republics relations with the international community. In return for downsizing its activities and allowing closer UN inspections, Iran, which denies wanting nuclear weapons, would see painful UN and Western sanctions that have choked its economy lifted. In April the P51 and Iran massively raised hopes that a resolution to the long-running crisis was in sight when they reached an accord in Lausanne, Switzerland on the outlines of a deal that they aim to finalise by the end of June. But on Tuesday Irans supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, set out key red lines for the final agreement which appeared to go against parts of what had been agreed in the Swiss city.Khamenei said that all economic and financial sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council and the US must be lifted on the same day that an agreement is signed.Western powers have said that no sanctions will be lifted until the UN atomic watchdog has verified that Iran has taken key steps outlined in the deal. These include Iran slashing by more than two-thirds the number of uranium enrichment centrifuges, which can produce fuel for nuclear power but also form the core of a nuclear bomb, as well as shrinking its uranium stockpile by 98 percent.Iran also agreed to change the design of a planned reactor at Arak so that it cannot produce weapons-grade plutonium and to no longer use its Fordo facility -- built into a mountain to protect it from attack -- for uranium enrichment. In addition Khamenei took issue with the IAEA visiting military sites -- vital for a UN probe into allegations of past efforts to develop nuclear weapons -- and with the time periods for which Iran will halt certain activities.Even if negotiators manage a deal, it will be closely scrutinised by hardliners both in Iran and the United States, as well as Irans regional rivals Israel, widely assumed to have nuclear weapons itself, and Saudi Arabia. On Wednesday, Kerry warned that despite the huge diplomatic effort to get a deal -- talks began in earnest back in 2013 -- success was not guaranteed. If Iran cannot address the remaining issues needed to assure the world its nuclear programme is peaceful, there wont be a deal, he said.On Thursday a senior US official said that the key unresolved points in what will be a highly complex accord included the timing and pace of sanctions relief and details about access and transparency for UN inspectors. These negotiations have been extremely tough, the official said. It is like (the game) whack-a-mole. Another issue may pop back up because youve changed the balance of the deal because of any decision.

At least five Britons killed in Tunisia attack: govt

LONDON (AFP) - Five British citizens have been killed in the gun massacre at a packed holiday resort in Tunisia on Friday, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said, warning that the toll could rise.He said a high proportion of the 37 people killed and 36 wounded in the attack at the popular Mediterranean resort of Port el Kantaoui were expected to be British.Meanwhile police said they were stepping up security for a number of high-profile events across Britain this weekend to protect and reassure people. We have had reports from families of those involved in the incident that allow us to confirm that at least five Britons have been killed in this incident, Hammond said after chairing a meeting of the governments emergency response committee in London. But I should warn that we must expect that there will be more reports of fatalities as we establish the detail on the ground. He added: Because of the nature of the composition of the tourist population in this part of Tunisia we have to assume that a high proportion of those killed and injured will have been British.Prime Minister David Cameron, who earlier branded the massacre and other attacks in France and Kuwait on Friday as the fruit of perverted ideology, offered his condolences. My heart is with the families of all the British victims of the Tunisian terror attack. We are to help and support them, he said on Twitter, adding that he was sickened by Fridays events. The death toll was announced as more harrowing testimonies emerged from British survivors, including from one woman who described how her fiance was shot three times -- in the shoulder, chest and hip -- while trying to protect her.I owe him my life because he threw himself in front of me when the shooting started, 26-year-old holidaymaker Saera Wilson, from Wales, told the BBC.He was covered in blood from the shots, but he just told me to run away. He told me: I love you babe. But just go -- tell our children that their daddy loves them.Matthew James, 30, survived but is in intensive care in hospital, added Wilson. You just cant explain how terrible it was. It was chaos with screaming and gunshots. Im just so glad Matthew is alive because so many other people are dead, she said.Hammond said Britain had a consular team on the ground in Sousse, the beach resort where the attack occurred, with two further rapid response teams arriving overnight. He said he had held a conference call with tour operators and there would be a further government emergency response meeting on Saturday morning.Helen Ball, deputy assistant commissioner of Londons Metropolitan Police, said there would be additional security at a number of major public events this weekend, including a national celebration of the armed forces which is often attended by Cameron and senior ministers. As we approach a weekend of large public celebrations around the country, including Armed Forces Day events and Pride London, we will be putting in place additional security measures to help protect and reassure the public. In updated travel advice on its website, the Foreign Office warned that some attackers may still be at large and urged any British nationals holidaying in or near the resort to stay indoors, and not to advertise their location on social media or when speaking to journalists.

UN condemns attacks in France, Tunisia, Kuwait

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council on Friday strongly condemned the attacks in France, Kuwait and Tunisia and said those responsible must face justice. One person was decapitated in southeastern France, while in Tunisia gunmen killed at least 37 people at a beach resort, and 27 people died in a suicide bombing claimed by Islamic State jihadists in Kuwait.Ban condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks in Tunisia, Kuwait and France today, said a statement from his spokesman. Those responsible for these appalling acts of violence must be swiftly brought to justice.Ban vowed that the heinous attacks will not weaken international resolve to fight terror but rather strengthen the commitment to defeat those bent on murder, destruction and the annihilation of human development and culture. The 15-member council also condemned the attacks in a unanimous statement and stressed the need to bring perpetrators of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.

Oil prices flat awaiting Greece, Iran outcomes

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices traded flat Friday in a market still devoid of strong demand or supply signals but wary of Greeces cliffhanger debt talks and negotiations about Irans nuclear program in Vienna. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) or light sweet crude for August stood at $59.63 a barrel, down seven cents from Thursday, and 23 cents above where the price stood a week ago.On Londons Intercontinental Exchange, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August added 6 cents for the day to $63.26 per barrel, up 60 cents from a week before. The market has looked apathetic and somewhat tired, so were seeing a bit of short-covering ahead of the weekend, said Matt Smith of Clipper Data. The sentiment on Greece is ebbing and flowing, he noted, as pressure mounted on Friday for Athens to accept what appeared to be the final European proposal of conditions for funding.Greece desperately needs more bailout money to make a 1.5 billion euro ($1.7 billion) debt payment to the IMF by Tuesday, but has repeatedly rejected certain reforms demanded by creditors. If theres a resolution, its going to be positive for the euro, ergo for the crude market, said Smith. The market is also waiting to see if Iran and major world powers can reach a deal on curbing Tehrans nuclear program by the end of the month that would allow Western powers to remove sanctions, opening the spigots for more Iranian crude to hit the international market.Efforts to finalize a pact remain stuck on several issues, diplomats from both sides said Friday as US Secretary of State John Kerry headed to Vienna for weekend talks.

'White-ball' changes to be implemented from July

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Rule changes affecting 50-over one-day and Twenty20 international matches will take effect in July, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Friday. The aim of the altered regulations, which take effect in all series starting on or after July 5 is to restore the balance between bat and ball after this years World Cup in Australia and New Zealand witnessed the largest number of 300 and even 400 plus total seen at the ICCs showpiece tournament. From July 5, five fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle between the 41st and 50th overs, rather than the current four.Meanwhile there will be no compulsory catchers from the first to the 10th over in ODIs and no batting powerplays will be allowed between the 15th and 40th overs. In both ODI and T20 internationals, all no-balls, not just foot faults, will lead to a free hit. David Richardson, the ICC chief executive, speaking about the changes, in a statement issued Friday from the global governing bodys annual conference in Barbados, said: We have thoroughly reviewed the ODI format after a very successful ICC Cricket World Cup. There was no need to make any radical changes to what has proved to be a vibrant and popular format but we wanted to take this opportunity to make the format simpler and easier to follow for the public as well as maintaining a balance between bat and ball. The former South Africa wicket-keeper added: In making these adjustments, we have tried to ensure that ODI cricket retains the attacking, aggressive and thrilling brand, which has recently become the hallmark of 50-over cricket and sets us on a positive path to the next World Cup in England in 2019.

Johnson enjoys treble strike in Ashes opener

CANTERBURY (AFP) - Mitchell Johnson gave England a reminder of what they can expect in the upcoming Ashes series with three wickets in Australias tour opener against Kent on Friday.Left-arm fast bowler Johnson took a wicket with just his sixth ball of the match and returned late on to dismiss Kent captain Sam Northeast and Ben Harmison as he took three for 42 in 13 fiery overs.Former England batsman Rob Key kept Australia at bay with a fine 87.But Kent, bottom of the Second Division of the County Championship, lost a cluster of wickets late in the day after Key was out and finished on 203 for five in reply to Australias imposing first innings 508 for seven declared -- a deficit of 304 runs.Sam Billings was 24 not out and Adam Ball 21 not out. Earlier, Steven Smith showed just how far he had come in eight years with a century, having played for Kent 2nd XI as a teenager.Meanwhile 21-year-old Kent paceman Matt Hunn took five for 99 in 27 overs -- his maiden five for in just his fourth first-class match.Johnson was one of Englands chief tormentors with 37 wickets at under 14 apiece as Australia completed a 5-0 home Ashes whitewash in 2013/14.He had Kents Daniel Bell-Drummond lbw with a full-length delivery off the last ball of the opening over of Kents first innings on Friday. Kent fought back during a second-wicket stand of 81 between Joe Denly and Key.Denly, a former England one-day batsman, made 36 before he was caught behind off Peter Siddle.Key, who played four Tests against Australia during the 2002/03 Ashes, really started to go for his shots after passing 50, pulling fast bowler Ryan Harris for four.Johnson came back to have Kent skipper Sam Northeast, trying to leave the ball, gloving to wicket-keeper Brad Haddin.Key, who played the last of his 15 Tests a decade ago, cut and pulled leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed for two fours in as many balls to move to within 13 runs of 100.But next ball he was out for 87 -- said to be Australias unlucky number -- when he slogged Ahmed to Shaun Marsh at mid-wicket.Key batted for nearly three hours and faced 108 balls including 15 fours.Johnson, charging in down the hill at the St Lawrence ground, then bowled Ben Harmison, younger brother of former England paceman Stephen, as Kent declined to 168 for five. In 2007, Smith played a handful of matches for Kents 2nd XI and spent the season with local club side Sevenoaks Vine, where he was regarded as a promising leg-spinner who batted.Roll on to 2015 and Smith is now ranked as the worlds leading Test batsman, with an average of over 56.Australia, who had been sent into bat, resumed on 348 for three after Mitchell Marsh (114) and Chris Rogers (84) had both made a case to open alongside the rested David Warner come the first Test against England in Cardiff on July 8.Smith was 71 not out and Shane Watson unbeaten on eight. The only time Smith looked in any trouble was on 99 when he charged down the pitch to Australia-born seamer Mitchell Claydon and missed with an expansive drive. However, he soon whipped Claydon off his pads and beyond the mid-wicket rope to complete a 151-ball hundred featuring 11 fours and a six. That shot came amidst a run of three successive fours before the 26-year-old Smith decided he had had enough batting and walked off.Right-arm fast-medium bowler Hunn had his fifth wicket when he uprooted Mitchell Marshs off-stump.

American governing body suspended again

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Crickets hopes of establishing a foothold in the United States suffered a setback Friday when the countrys ruling body was suspended for a third time by the International Cricket Council (ICC).A review report into the USA Cricket Association had expressed significant concerns about the governance, finance, reputation and cricketing activities of USACA.It is the third time the American body has fallen foul of the ICC having also been suspended in 2005 and 2007.The ICC Board had put USACA on notice in its January meeting and had hoped that it would show some urgency to address and improve in the areas that were identified as weaknesses, said ICC chairman N.Srinivasan.Unfortunately, the response to date has been inadequate and it has proved necessary for the ICC Board to take further action.Despite the suspension, the ICC said that the USA team will still be allowed to participate in next months World Twenty20 qualifier in Ireland and Scotland. The Under-19 team will also be permitted to play in the upcoming Americas Championship in Bermuda.

Smith lets his 'bat do the talking' with Kent ton

Posted:

CANTERBURY (AFP) - Australias Steven Smith said he wanted to let his bat do the talking after the worlds number one ranked Test batsman opened his Ashes tour account with a century against Kent on Friday.Former England off-spinner Graeme Swann recently questioned how Smith, who has scored five hundreds in his last six Tests, would fare in English conditions.I still dont think hes got a great technique, Swann said. I dont think hell score runs at three if its swinging.Smiths response was to make 111 before retiring out as Australia piled up 507 for eight declared in the first innings of their tour opener against county strugglers Kent at the Spitfire St Lawrence ground on Fridays second day of a scheduled four.Smith, who starred in Australias recent 2-0 Test series win in the Caribbean, told reporters after stumps: It is nice to get a hundred, but for me the most important thing was to spend some time in the middle, to try to get used to the English conditions which are a bit different to the West Indies and back home.As for Swanns comments, the 26-year-old Smith said: That does not really bother me. It is pre-Ashes and a little bit of banter.I am happy for him to say whatever he likes, and hopefully I can just continue to let my bat do the talking.New South Wales all-rounder Smith, who originally made his name as a leg-spinner, represented Kent 2nd XI as a teenager during a 2007 season where he also played for local club side Sevenoaks Vine. My mum is from Kent, said Smith. I played a little bit of club cricket at Sevenoaks Vine in 07, which was really enjoyable and I think it helped my game in the long run as well. But he added there was never any question of him being tempted into an international career with England while he was at Kent. Not at Kent, no...I played a bit of cricket at Surrey, and I think they might have been trying to get me along (to England) but I think I made a wise decision to play back home, Smith said.At stumps, Kent were 203 for five, with fast bowler Mitchell Johnson -- whom Swann has suggested may not even be in Australias side come the first Test in Cardiff on July 8 -- taking three for 42 in 13 fiery overs. I thought he bowled really well, said Smith of paceman Johnson, who took 37 wickets during Australias 5-0 Ashes whitewash of England in 2013/14.He showed good pace and aggression, and I think that is what we can expect a lot of during this Ashes series, added Smith.Kent, bottom of the Second Division of the County Championship, would have been left in an even weaker position but for former England batsman Rob Keys innings of 87.I enjoyed it, it has been a while, said the 36-year-old Key, who played the last of his 15 Tests against South Africa in 2005.But when you go on a proper wicket against a proper attack, its nice to show that I can still go out there and play a few shots, added Key, who holed out trying to slog leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed. For a large part of that I thought, there is no way I get paid enough to be facing him (Johnson). He is a different level. The pace he has, he gets the odd one to swing, explained Key. That bloke is a serious bowler. He can intimidate you but he can also move the ball around a little bit. Hes tough.
