Egypt street battles leave at least 64 dead

Posted:

CAIRO (AP) - Heavy gunfire rang out Friday throughout Cairo as tens of thousands of supporters of Egypts ousted president clashed with armed vigilantes in the fiercest street battles to engulf the capital since the countrys Arab Spring uprising. At least 64 people were killed in the fighting nationwide, including police officers.Carrying pistols and assault rifles, residents battled with protesters taking part in what the Muslim Brotherhood called a Day of Rage, ignited by anger at security forces for clearing two sit-in demonstrations Wednesday in clashes that killed more than 600 people.Military helicopters circled overhead as residents furious with the Brotherhood protests pelted them with rocks and glass bottles. The two sides also fired on one another, sparking running street battles throughout the capitals residential neighborhoods. There was little hope that an evening curfew would curb the violence as the Muslim Brotherhood called on supporters of the countrys ousted Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi, to stage daily protests.Unlike in past clashes between protesters and police, Fridays violence took an even darker turn with residents and possibly police in civilian clothing battling those participating in the Brotherhood-led marches. There were few police in uniform to be seen as neighborhood watchdogs and pro-Morsi protesters fired at one another for hours on a bridge that crosses over Cairos Zamalek district, an upscale island neighborhood where many foreigners and ambassadors reside.Across the country, at least 56 civilians were killed, along with eight police officers, security officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. The violence erupted shortly after midday weekly prayers when tens of thousands of Brotherhood supporters answered the groups call to protest across Egypt in defiance of a military-imposed state of emergency following the bloodshed earlier this week.Armed civilians manned impromptu checkpoints throughout the capital, banning Brotherhood marches from approaching and frisking anyone wanting to pass through. At one checkpoint, residents barred ambulances and cars carrying wounded from Cairos main battleground, Ramses Square, from reaching a hospital. The scenes highlighted how dangerous the divisions in Egypt have become. At least nine police stations were attacked Friday, officials said. Egypts police force was rocked by the countrys 2011 uprising that ousted longtime leader Hosni Mubarak from power and has not fully recovered since. On Thursday, the Interior Ministry said it had authorized the use of deadly force against anyone targeting police and state institutions. But the threat appeared not to intimidate protesters. The Brotherhood-led marches in Cairo headed toward Ramses Square, near the countrys main train station. The area is near Tahrir Square, where the army put up barbed wire and deployed 30 tanks outside the Cairo Museum overlooking the square as a buffer between the protesters and a small anti-Brotherhood encampment in the square.Several of the protesters were seen writing their names and relatives phone numbers on one anothers chests and undershirts in case they were to die in Fridays clashes.Tawfik Dessouki, a Brotherhood supporter, said he was ready to fight for democracy and against the militarys ouster of Morsi.I am here for the blood of the people who died. We didnt have a revolution to go back to a police and military state again and to be killed by the state, he said during a march headed toward Ramses Square. At least 12 people were killed near the square after police fired on protesters. Some appeared to be trying to attack a nearby police station, security officials said. Inside Al-Fath mosque near Ramses Square, where the Brotherhood urged its Cairo supporters to converge, blood-soaked bodies with bullets to the head and chest lay next to one another.Associated Press photographers saw many of the dead inside the mosque-turned-morgue, which was also acting as a field hospital where the wounded were being wheeled in on wooden crates. One corpse had a name and phone number scribbled on the chest. The upper floors of a commercial building towering over Ramses Square caught fire later in the day, with flames engulfing it for hours. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire at the building housing the Arab Contractors construction company, but no injuries were reported.Similar scenes played out in Egypts second-largest city of Alexandria, where at least 10 people were killed in clashes between protesters and their rivals, according to a security official. Violence was also fierce in the province of Fayoum, just west of Cairo, where 11 people died during an attempt to storm the main security building there.Fighting also broke out in at least five other provinces. In the southern province of Minya, two churches were attacked by protesters, security officials said. At churches across the country, residents formed human chains to protect them from further assaults, and a civilian was killed while trying to protect a church in Sohag, south of Cairo, authorities said. Many of Morsis supporters have voiced criticism at Egypts Christian minority for largely supporting the militarys decision to oust him from office, and dozens of churches have been attacked this week. Also Friday, security officials said assailants detonated explosives on train tracks between Alexandria and the western Mediterranean Sea province of Marsa Matrouh. There were no injuries and no trains were damaged, officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Iraq seeking US drones to curb Al Qaeda threat

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Iraqs top diplomat says U.S. drones could be based in Iraq to help fight a growing threat by Al Qaeda. The Iraqi foreign minister is Hoshyar Zebari.Zebari said Friday that Iraqi forces need U.S. help with surveillance and analyzing intelligence. He suggests that an unspecified but limited number of American counterterror advisers could be stationed in Iraq to help its military deter a recent spike in deadly attacks. His comments come 20 months after the U.S. military left Iraq because the two countries could not agree to keep some American troops there to bolster security.Asked for specifics, Zebari said drones could be part of a U.S. package of support for Iraq.Spokesmen at the Pentagon and State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Ferry sinks in collision in Philippines; 24 dead

MANILA (AP) - A ferry with nearly 700 people aboard sank near the central Philippine port of Cebu on Friday night after colliding with a cargo vessel, killing at least 24 people. Hundreds of others were rescued. The captain of the ferry MV Thomas Aquinas ordered the ship abandoned after it began listing and then sank after hitting the cargo vessel, coast guard officer Joy Villegas said. The coast guard said 24 people were confirmed dead, including children, and 525 had been rescued several hours after the collision. Authorities were still checking the number of others who had been taken to hospitals. Two coast guard vessels and other nearby ships were involved in the rescue operation not far from the port of Cebu, Villegas said.Hundreds of passengers jumped into the ocean as the ship started to sink, according to survivors. Many of the passengers were asleep and others struggled to find their way in the dark.Jerwin Agudong said he and other passengers jumped overboard in front of the cargo vessel after the ferry began taking on water and the crew distributed life jackets. He told radio station DZBB that some people were trapped and he saw bodies in the water. It seems some were not able to get out. I pity the children. We saw dead bodies on the side, and some being rescued, he said.He said the ferry was entering the pier when the cargo vessel, which was on the way out, suddenly collided with it.One of the persons who jumped with us hit his head on metal. He is shaking and he is bloodied, Agudong said. The 138-meter (455-foot) -long ferry sank in about 30 minutes, he said. The youngest among those rescued was an 11-month baby, news reports said. The ferry came from Nasipit in Agusan del Sur province in the southern Philippines on a daylong journey, Agudong said.Accidents at sea are common in the Philippine archipelago because of frequent storms, badly maintained boats and weak enforcement of safety regulations. In 1987, the ferry Dona Paz sank after colliding with a fuel tanker in the Philippines, killing more than 4,341 people in the worlds worst peacetime maritime disaster. In 2008, the ferry MV Princess of the Stars capsized during a typhoon in the central Philippines, killing nearly 800 people.

Bombings around Iraq's capital kill 7 people

BAGHDAD (AP) - Officials in Iraq say two bombings around the capital, Baghdad, have killed seven people.Police officials said that the deadlier of the two attacks took place Friday night when a bomb exploded as people left a soccer field. They said the attack in western Baghdad killed five people and wounded 15.Earlier Friday, authorities said two soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb hit an army patrol in Mahmoudiyah, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Baghdad.Medical hospital officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists.Violence has been rising across Iraq since a deadly crackdown by government forces on a Sunni protest camp in April.

Bahrain authorities crush prison riot, 40 injured

Posted:

MANAMA (AP) - Bahraini authorities crushed a prison riot on Friday, leaving at least 40 injured after they fired stun grenades and tear gas, rights groups said.Prisoners called their families from inside the prison to alert them to the crackdown, Sayed al-Muhafada of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights said. The rioting occurred in Bahrains Dry Dock prison on the island of Muharraq, northeast of the capital, Manama, the group said in a statement, adding that the ward at the center of the revolt houses many anti-government activists and human rights defenders waiting to be tried on terrorism charges. The Interior Ministry announced that order had been restored following the riots, saying on their official twitter feed that prisoners had tried to break the doors and police interfered and restored order.Gulf researcher Nicholas McGeehan of Human Rights Watch called for an investigation into the incident. In a statement to The Associated Press, he said reports of the riot were of utmost concern given well-documented previous instances of brutality and torture at Dry Dock prison.Bahrain has seen over two years of unrest linked to the Shiite majoritys demands for a greater say in the affairs of the minority Sunni-ruled kingdom. In recent months, security forces have mostly kept protests away from the center of the capital. The island nation with a native population of more than 550,000 has been gripped by near nonstop turmoil since February 2011, when Shiites inspired by the Arab Spring wave of revolts began the uprising. At least 60 people have died activists and Shiite leaders say more than 100 and prominent opposition and human rights figures have been jailed. The country is home to the U.S. Navys 5th Fleet, the Pentagons main base to counter Irans expanding military presence in the Gulf and protect oil shipping lanes through the Gulf of Hormuz.

Djokovic's bid for ATP history ends in Cincy

Posted:

MASON (AP) - Novak Djokovic dumped a backhand into the net and stood in place for a moment, stunned by another upset in Cincinnati. Its the only place where he cant win.Top-ranked American John Isner ended Djokovics attempt to make ATP history Friday, beating the worlds No. 1 player 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals at the Western & Southern Open.Djokovic has never won in Cincinnati, the only Masters event that has eluded him during his career. He has lost in the finals four times, including last year to Roger Federer. All he needs to do is hoist the winners trophy one time in Cincinnati to become the first player to win all nine Masters events.Wait until next year. Again. Its disappointing that I played this way, Djokovic said. For me, its very disappointing.Isner reached the semifinals in Cincinnati for the first time, knocking off a world No. 1 for only the second time in his career. His other No. 1 upset? He beat Djokovic at Indians Wells in the semifinals last year for his only career win against him.A fantastic win for me, Isner said. Certainly one of my greatest memories as a tennis player.Hell play seventh-seeded Juan Martin del Potro, who advanced on Friday by beating qualifier Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Del Potro is in the semifinals for the second year in a row.In the womens draw, 14th-seeded Jelena Jankovic beat 12th-seeded Roberta Vinci 6-0, 6-4 to reach the semifinals for the third time. She won the tournament in 2009 and lost the title match to Maria Sharapova in 2011.I love playing here in Cincinnati because I have great results in the past, said Jankovic, who fought off eight of nine break points in the second set.So that always helps. I mean, I was a finalist and a champion before, so you always love coming back to places where you can win.Not Djokovic. He poorly last year in his loss to Federer in the finals. He was off again on Friday, which was especially frustrating since he came into the tournament motivated to make ATP history by winning it.I just played a very bad match overall, he said. Terrible match. From beginning to end, except the start of the second set, I was just a different player totally.Djokovic wasted a chance to break Isner early in the third set. He was up 40-15 in the final game, ready to send it to a tiebreaker, when he came apart.Isner kept the game going with a running forehand that hugged the line, drawing a loud cheer from the crowd.Probably the best shot I hit all match, Isner said.Djokovic gave Isner his first attempt at a match point by dumping a backhand into the net, but saved it with a 119 mph ace. With the crowd cheering Isner on, Djokovic double-faulted and dumped another backhand into the net, giving Isner his only service break of the match. What happened on those last two points?I dont know, Djokovic said.Del Potro has been playing with a sore wrist and knee, two concerns with the U.S. Open at hand. He managed to reach the semifinals without issue. Its bothering me a little bit, but not too much, he said. (Im) trying to play a slice and play different shots in this tournament before the U.S. Open to see how different I can play against the top guys or doing different things.Im OK. My knee is OK, too, and thats important looking forward to New York.

Bolt breezes into 200 final at worlds

Posted:

MOSCOW (AP) - Usain Bolt didnt have to pressure his taped-up tender right foot Friday at the world championships, coasting into the 200-metre final and setting himself up for a second gold medal. With only two assured qualification spots from his heat, the 100 champion switched into a higher gear at the end of his race when, unexpectedly, Anaso Jobodwana appeared on his left shoulder.Bolt momentarily gritted his teeth but soon turned them into a grin as he held off the South African and took first place in his semifinal heat in 20.12 seconds. He never showed any unease about his right foot.Curtis Mitchell was top qualifier in 19.97, but saw all his American teammates eliminated from the final. Isiah Young missed it by .03 seconds.Bolt was joined in the final by Jamaican teammates Nickel Ashmeade and Warren Weir.Bolt had been troubled by a sore foot since he regained his 100 title on Sunday.I worked on it over the four days, got a lot of work done, Bolt said. Right now, Im good.If Bolt wins, he goes into the 4x100 relay seeking to win three golds at the worlds for the second time, matching his feat at the last two Olympics.Another Jamaican will try to get one step ahead of Bolt. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce already has the 100 title and will now go against Olympic champion Allyson Felix of the United States in the final of the 200.Felix is also seeking three golds. If she wins the 200 and adds the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, it would equal the three golds she won at the London Olympics. And after three silver medals on Thursday, the United States is ready to get in that golden mood again, and with the mens long jump, 4x400 relay and shot put scheduled, the opportunity is certainly there. At the longer distances, Mo Farah is looking for a double. The 10,000 champion is favored again to defend his title in the 5,000. He got a similar 5,000-10,000 double at last years London Games.Fridays other final is the womens hammer throw. In the 100 hurdles, Olympic and defending champion Sally Pearson shook of the injury worries that slowed her this season and set a seasons best time of 12.62 seconds in her heat, still .07 seconds behind leading qualifier Brianna Rollins of the United States.Dawn Harper, the 2008 Olympic champion from the United States, finished only third in her heat but still advanced.Off the track, pole vault great Yelena Isinbayeva backed off from her comments criticizing homosexuality. The Russian said she may have been misunderstood when she condemned homosexuality and criticized Swedish high jumper Emma Green Tregaro for painting her fingernails in the rainbow colors to express support for gays and lesbians.English is not my first language, Isinbayeva said. Let me state in the strongest terms that I am opposed to any discrimination against gay people.

Mo Farah wins another long-distance double

Posted:

MOSCOW (AP) - For the second year in a row, Mo Farah did the double. The British runner became only the second man to hold both the 5,000 and 10,000-metre titles from both the Olympics and the world championships at the same time. Its amazing. Theres not many athletes who have done that. Only the great Kenenisa Bekele, who has achieved so many things, said Farah, who defended his 5,000 title Friday at Luzhniki Stadium. And to be able to achieve what he has achieved is just an honor.Farah barely lost the 10,000 at the last worlds two years ago in South Korea, but rebounded to win the 5,000. Then, running at home at the London Olympics, Farah won both distance events.Bekele is the only other man to have ever held both the Olympic and world 5,000 and 10,000 titles at the same time. The Ethiopian great won his Olympic titles at the 2008 Beijing Games and then repeated that feat at the 2009 worlds in Berlin. On Friday, Farah broke away from the pack with about 600 metres to go and fended off challenges from Isaiah Koech of Kenya and Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia in the home straight. He won in 13 minutes, 26.98 seconds.Going in to the last lap, Gebrhiwet and Koech were gaining on Farah. But the Briton stayed ahead and down the stretch produced the trademark kick that has made him the man to beat.I had a stitch from about eight laps to go and I was kind of pushing my stomach in, but then the pace slowed down and I tried to forget about it and come through, Farah said. I enjoyed tonight and now Im looking forward to a bit of time off and spending it with the family.Gebrhiwet ended up with the silver in 13:27.26, one-thousandth of a second ahead of Koech, who was credited with the same time for bronze. Two years ago, Farah was only seconds away from his first long-distance double, but Ibrahim Jeilan of Ethiopia nipped him at the line, leaving him with silver.I never thought in my career that Id be able to achieve something like this, said Farah, who became Britains most decorated track athlete ever with his fifth major title. Anything is possible I guess.

Lyon comes from behind to win 3-1 at Sochaux

MONTBELIARD (AP) - Lyon came from behind to beat Sochaux 3-1 in the French league on Friday, scoring two goals in eight minutes to turn the match around.Sochaux narrowly avoided relegation last season but got off to a good start when it was awarded a penalty in the fourth minute after Milan Bisevac shoulder-barged Cedric Bakambu off the ball. Ryad Boudebouz confidently converted. However, after that it was all Lyon and the visitors pressure paid off in the 35th minute when the ever-dangerous Clement Grenier sent a through-ball in for teenager Yassine Benzia to score his first league goal.Alexandre Lacazette gave Lyon the lead with his third goal in two games. Lyon extended its advantage moments after halftime, thanks to a well-placed effort from Yoann Gourcuff.

Golf: Europe takes early 3-1 lead at Solheim Cup

Posted:

PARKER (AP) - Three straight long putts stunned Americas No. 1 power pairing Friday and helped the Europeans get off to a surprising early lead at the Solheim Cup.Azahara Munoz and Karine Icher made consecutive birdies from 15, 25 and 20 feet on holes 8 through 10 to open a big lead over Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer en route to a 2-and-1 victory that gave Europe a 3-1 lead after the opening alternate-shot matches. We had an amazing stretch on 8, 9 and 10, Munoz said. And after that, we just kept plugging along and we just did our job.Americas only point came from Morgan Pressel and rookie Jessica Korda in a 3-and-2 victory over Matthew and Jodi Ewart-Shadoff.Before Munoz and Icher were through, Europe already had two points on the board. The all-Swedish pairing of Anna Nordqvist and Caroline Hedwall beat British Open champion Stacy Lewis and Lizette Salas 4 and 2, and Suzann Pettersens partner, rookie Beatriz Recari, made a 20-foot eagle putt on 16 to close out a 2-and-1 win over Brittany Lang and Angela Stanford. Its early. Its Friday morning. Were going to be ready for this afternoon, Stanford said. For the afternoon best-ball matches, U.S. captain Meg Mallon put Michelle Wie in the lineup, pairing her with Kerr against Catriona Matthew and 17-year-old Charley Hull, the youngest Solheim Cup player ever.Other matches: Lang and Brittany Lincicome against Nordqvist and Giulia Sergas; Stanford and Gerina Piller against Hedwall and Caroline Masson; Lewis and Lexi Thompson against Pettersen and Carlota Ciganda. The United States is trying to recapture the cup after losing it to the Europeans in Ireland two years ago. The Americans were considered favorites coming in, having never lost the Solheim Cup at home.Figuring Creamer and Kerr would be a big part of any victory, Mallon put them together in the anchor position for the opening matches, showing confidence in a pairing with a 2-0-1 record together, along with a combined three major titles. The match started getting away early, when Kerr missed short putts on Nos. 1 and 5. Then, it was Icher and Munoz opening up a lead with their putters. Munoz sandwiched a 15-footer on 8 and a 25-footer on 10 around Ichers 20-footer on No. 9 to help the Europeans to a 4-up lead heading into No. 11.They seemed to throw three really long (putts) at us on 8, 9 and 10 and we didnt get the momentum until our last couple holes, and then its too late, Kerr said. She and Creamer made things interesting, pulling within two heading to the 17th, but Icher ended it with an 8-foot par putt for the win on the par-3 green. Icher and Munoz are ranked 24th and 27th, while Creamer and Kerr came into the week at Nos. 11 and 12.It was great to win this match and I think I found a friend forever, Icher said.Korda lost her breakfast on the first fairway and Pressel, who improved her Solheim Cup record to 8-2-2, helped calm her down the rest of the way.I had milk and cereal for breakfast, and then I decided to have a banana, Korda said. And then I felt it coming and I was like, What the heck is that?Despite that unsettling moment, she drilled a wedge to about 8 feet for a quick 1-up lead. After I got past the first hole, I was pretty OK, Korda said. They seized control of the match by making solid par putts on the ultra-quick greens. Korda holed a 7-foot par to halve the 16th hole and seal Americas only point in the morning.Pressel was impressed with the Solheim Cup rookie, and her choice of words to describe Korda were appropriate.Shes got some fire in her belly, Pressel said.

Oil rises for 6th day in a row

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil climbed higher above $107 a barrel on Friday amid fears of potential supply disruptions as violence in Egypt continued to spiral.By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for September delivery was up 23 cents to $107.56 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 48 cents to close at $107.33 per barrel on Thursday. The ouster in early July of Egypt's president, Mohammed Morsi, has helped lift crude prices, reflecting the risk of a supply disruption from the country that controls the Suez Canal. Clashes between police and Morsi's supporters left 638 dead on Wednesday, and the country is bracing for more violence. On Friday, thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters around the country defied the state of emergency declared by the government and took to the streets in response to the Islamist group's call for a Day of Rage to protest the killings.Egypt is not a major oil exporter, but traders worry that the violence could spill over to more important oil-exporting countries in the Middle East or disrupt the Suez Canal, a major trade route.Alarmingly, the underlying causes for the instability in the region seem to be taking a systematic character, making it less likely that the region will return to stability in the near future and increasing the chances for continued supply outages, said a report from analysts at JBC Energy in Vienna.Libya's oil output has fallen sharply over the past months, while conflicts in Tunisia, Syria, Yemen and Sudan, as well as rising sectarian violence in Iraq are all clouding the region's future, the JBC Energy report said.Oil passed $100 per barrel in early July for the first time since September as Morsi was being ousted. It reached a high for the year of $108.15 on July 19 as Libyan output fell due to strikes at oil facilities.October Brent crude, a benchmark used to set prices of imported crude purchased by many U.S. refineries, was up 35 cents to $109.95 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange in London.

Sri Lanka rejects day-night test proposal

COLOMBO (AP) - Sri Lankas cricket officials have rejected a proposal from Pakistan to play a first-ever day and night test match during a series to be played later this year.Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement Friday its executive committee turned down the proposal because the national team had not practiced under lights with a pink ball to be used in the match. The decision was taken after consulting the national team management, it said. The two sides will play three test matches, five one-day internationals and two Twenty20 games starting December in the United Arab Emirates. The International Cricket Council last year decided to allow test playing nations to play day and night tests if there was mutual agreement on the hours of play, type and color of the ball.
