Random shooting, bombings kill 12 across Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) - A series of attacks across Iraq on Sunday killed 12 people, including a random shooting and the killing of a judge, authorities said.Violence has been on the rise in Iraq all year, but the number of attacks against civilians and security forces has spiked during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which began early last month. The surge in the bloodshed is raising fears of a return to the widespread killing that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. The deadliest attack took place late Sunday night when gunmen in a speeding car opened fire randomly on a gathering of people on a street in the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, killing four people and wounding three, said Kirkuk deputy police chief Maj. Gen. Torhan Abdul-Rahman Youssef.Earlier in the day, police officials said a roadside bomb struck an army patrol near the northern city of Mosul, killing three soldiers. In Tikrit in central Iraq, a car bomb killed Judge Sajid Abdul-Amir as he was driving to his work, police said.In eastern Baghdad, two people were killed in a blast, police said. Meanwhile, mortar rounds landed on houses in the capitals western suburbs, killing two people, authorities said.Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures toll for the attacks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to the media. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, though security forces and civilians are frequently targeted by al-Qaidas Iraq branch. With Saturdays attacks, at least 609 people have been killed since the start of Ramadan, according to an Associated Press count. Along with security officials being killed, there have been multiple bloody attacks targeting civilians in cafes as they broke their daily fast. Its been the bloodiest Ramadan in Iraq since 2007.

Libyan deputy PM resigns citing 'policy failure'

Posted:

TRIPOLI (AP) - Libyas deputy prime minister has resigned citing failed government policies and the deterioration of security following a string of assassinations, according to officials and his Facebook page. The prime ministers office said Sunday it had accepted the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Awad al-Barassi. It had no further comment.Al-Barassi announced the resignation late Saturday on his official Facebook page, saying that a fearful number of assassinations of honorable people stemmed from what he said was government policy failure. The deputy prime minister is a member of a party allied with Libyas Muslim Brotherhood group, while Prime Minister Ali Zidan is considered close to liberals. But al-Barassis complaints did not appear to reflect ideological differences.Al-Barassi accused the prime minister of monopolizing decision-making, even about trivial issues, hindering government efforts to discharge its responsibilities for deteriorating security, especially in (the eastern city of) Benghazi. The city has seen a series of assassinations in recent weeks, including those of a leading Libyan lawyer and activist and a former top official in the countrys newly-formed security force, as well as several explosions targeting government offices and courthouses.Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed along with three other Americans in an attack last year on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, the birthplace of the countrys 2011 uprising against dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Del Potro beats Isner for 3rd title in Washington

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Juan Martin del Potro knows that a successful week in Washington can pay off at the U.S. Open.Getting his game in shape ahead of the years last Grand Slam tournament, the top-seeded del Potro eventually solved John Isners big serve for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory in the Citi Open final Sunday, winning his championship and 14th consecutive match at the hard-court tournament. He deserves this title. Hes going up there three times, Isner said, pointing to the blue awning that lists past winners in Washington. I wish my name could go up there.Back in 2009, del Potro followed up a title in the nations capital with his only Grand Slam trophy at the U.S. Open, which starts in three weeks.I have fantastic memories, del Potro told the crowd, so I will try to keep coming, year (after) year.On Sunday, del Potro broke Isner four times in all, including three in a row while winning seven consecutive games to take control.Isner best known for winning the longest match in tennis history, 70-68 in the fifth set at Wimbledon in 2010 had not even faced a break point over any of his previous three matches. Del Potro also limited Isner to six aces, after the eighth-seeded and 20th-ranked American pounded 29 in the semifinals. But perhaps Isner was a bit fatigued, playing for the ninth time in 11 days. He won a hard-court title at Atlanta last week and carried an eight-match winning streak into Sunday, when his play dipped over the last two sets. During the trophy ceremony, Isner thanked his chiropractor, drawing chuckles from fans. The seventh-ranked del Potro, who was playing his fifth match in four days, won the Washington tournament in 2008 and 2009, then skipped it in 2010, 2011 and 2012.Its the second trophy of the season for del Potro, who won a tournament played on an indoor hard court at Rotterdam in February.Defending champion Magdalena Rybarikova was scheduled to face Andrea Petkovic in the womens final later Sunday. With wind whipping around at 15 mph and temperatures at 80 degrees, Isner got off to a terrific start thanks in part to his powerful and always effective serve, not surprisingly, but also with other aspects of his still-evolving game.It took Isner less than 10 minutes to create a cushion, breaking at love for a 3-1 edge with the help of a forehand return winner and three long points that required patience and solid groundstrokes until each ended with a mistake by del Potro. There were two 11-stroke exchanges, one capped by a backhand into the net, the other by a wide forehand. And on break point, Isner used some baseline defense to prolong a 21-shot sequence that finished with del Potros forehand clipping the net cord and dropping back on his side.Showing some touch, too, Isner won one point with a drop shot, then another with a drop-volley combination as he moved ahead 5-2. Even mixed in an on-the-run, cross-court backhand passing winner, followed by a cross-court forehand pass, on the way to his first set point, which del Potro saved with a 112 mph service winner.Given that Isner never had won a set against del Potro in three previous meetings, it made sense that nothing would come easily this time, either. So Isner required five set points before eventually cashing in with a 137 mph service winner.Still, perhaps Isner was bound to falter after such impeccable serving all week.Del Potro earned his first break point Sunday and the first Isner faced since his opening match 35 minutes into the final, in the second sets second game. But a 14-stroke point ended with del Potro sailing an easy forehand long for an unforced error. He hung his head, leaned over with hands on knees, then crouched down and stared at the net.Isner also took the next two points, serve-and-volleying on the second, to hold for 1-all. But then everything changed, and Isner wouldnt win another game for a substantial stretch.I think I was lucky in the second set, del Potro said.A bad drop shot into the net, a poor overhead smash right at del Potro that resulted in a cross-court forehand winner, a long forehand and a long backhand all added up to a break at love. That ended a run of 50 consecutive service games won by Isner across four matches and put del Potro up 3-1 in the second set.A huge forehand by del Potro, one of the hardest and flattest hitters around, set up a break point in his next return game, too, and Isner then pushed a backhand long to make it 5-1.Soon that set was del Potros and the match was tied after 55 minutes but it was quite clear who was in charge.Del Potro had only one difficult portion left, facing three break points while serving for the match. But he erased those last chances for Isner, then ended the 1½-hour match with a cross-court backhand winner.

She committed 32 unforced errors, including seven double faults, and had only 11 winners.Stosur, playing in her first final since October, hit 20 winners compared to 29 unforced errors, but played some key points, including saving 11 of 12 break points.

Drogba strikes for Galatasaray to win Emirates Cup

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Didier Drogba came back to haunt Arsenal in its own stadium on Sunday, scoring two late goals in a 2-1 victory that won Galatasaray the Emirates Cup.One of Arsenals bogeymen during his years at Chelsea, Drogba showed he hadnt lost the knack of scoring against the north London team. He came off the bench in the second half and turned a losing match around. He sealed victory in the 88th minute when he collected a pass into the box from Wesley Sneijder, dribbled past Per Mertesacker and struck the ball home. He brought Galatasaray level only nine minutes earlier when he converted a penalty after being pushed down by Bacary Sagna.Arsenal dominated play in the first half and scored in the 39th minute when Theo Walcotts cross cut through the defense and surprised goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. But the hosts couldnt convert several chances, including a close-range shot that Walcott tapped wide.Galatasaray coach Fatih Terims decision to field Drogba and Sneijder in the second half helped his team push forward with more confidence and hold possession for longer.Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger suggested his teams decline toward the end of the match was due more to the physical condition of his players rather than a mental lapse. Its been a long time since Ive seen two such different halves. We could not keep it going and we were punished for it, he said.Wenger praised Drogbas physical and intelligent play but said he had fallen too easily to win the penalty. The penalty was very, very, very, very soft, he said. It was a classic Drogba.Galatasaray finished the competition with nine points, ahead of FC Porto with six and Arsenal and Napoli with four.Earlier in the day, Porto beat Napoli 3-1.

Warner reveling in pantomime villain role

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AP) - In the 1990s, it was Merv Hughes. At the start of the century, it was Ricky Ponting. Theres no doubt who the so-called pantomime villain is in the Australia squad during the current Ashes series.David Warner expected a hostile reception at Old Trafford this week in his first start for Australia since returning from a suspension for punching Englands Joe Root in a late-night bar incident in June. And he got it.I actually liked the trumpeter playing the Rocky theme song, Warner said. It was actually entertaining for myself. I had a little chuckle. Its not every day you walk out on the field and get booed. But youve got to embrace it.Warner made only 10 in the first innings of the third test but was going well on 41 in his second innings Sunday when he hooked Tim Bresnan in the air toward the boundary. Who was there to take the diving catch? Root, of course.Yeah, hooked another one to Rooty, he joked, reviving memories of his now infamous altercation with Englands baby-faced opener in an Australia-themed bar after a Champions Trophy match.Out of all the people in the field, it was quite comical. Ill probably read about it on Twitter a bit later. As Warner made his lonely walk back to the pavilion, jeers came from all corners of Old Trafford. It was a football-type atmosphere in the usually refined environs of a test-cricket ground.Hes had to live with it all match and will probably receive the same treatment at Durham next week and the Oval for the fifth test, if he keeps his place.Im not well liked at the moment but this morning was quite entertaining down there, Warner said. There were a few hungover people and a few voices ... speaking their minds.Obviously its all my fault, he added. Youve got to embrace it. Someone does (normally) get picked out and this time its me. Ive got to keep my head down and focus on what my task ahead is, and thats scoring runs.Warner hasnt been far from the headlines this year.Memories are still fresh from Warners Twitter tirade in May, sparked by seeing his photo printed alongside a story about corruption in the Indian Premier League. Warner lashed out at two senior cricket journalists in an expletive-filled rant, receiving a fine of 5,750 Australian dollars. He apologized but landed himself in further trouble a month later by drunkenly attacking Root in the early hours after Australias 48-run loss to England in a Champions Trophy group match. He was suspended until the first Ashes test and fined 11,500 Australian dollars. For now, Warner is just trying to keep himself out of trouble.Im just enjoying being back in the team. All the misdemeanors are behind me at the moment and Im just enjoying playing cricket, he said. And Root hasnt passed up an opportunity to give Warner a bit of a ribbing during the third test.Yeah, Joey, he said to me: Its been a long couple of months, hasnt it? Warner recalled. I just turned around and had a little smile. Ive got a long memory, so its alright.
