Police: At least 4 dead in Dallas-area shootings

DALLAS (AP) - A suspect in the fatal shootings of four people in two Dallas-area homes was in custody Thursday as police tried to determine what prompted the attacks just minutes apart and whether an explosive was used.Four people were wounded in the late Wednesday shootings.Investigators arrested Erbie Bowser at the second location, but they have no information about Bowsers relationship with any of the victims, DeSoto police Cpt. Melissa Franks said.Charges were pending, Franks said. Bowser is a former teacher who also worked as a hip-hop dancer entertaining National Basketball Association crowds.Police were called to a home where they found four gunshot victims, Dallas police Sgt. Warren Mitchell said. A mother and her daughter were killed, and a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were wounded. The suspect then fled to the nearby community of DeSoto, where he is suspected of killing two people. Two boys, aged 11 and 13, survived that attack.Police did not immediately release the identities of those killed and wounded, and the conditions of the survivors were not known Thursday.A neighbor in DeSoto, Tommy Johnson, said he heard a loud boom Wednesday night.I peeped out the front, and thats when I saw a bunch of officers walking down the sidewalk and about 10 houses up, Johnson said.Franks said she could not confirm that a grenade or other explosive device had been used in the DeSoto attack, pending the results of a federal and Dallas bomb squad investigation.

Mideast peace talks, round 2, slated for Aug. 14

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The second round of Mideast peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians is slated for Aug. 14 in Jerusalem, to be followed by a later meeting in Jericho on the West Bank, the State Department announced on Thursday.State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Mideast peace envoy Martin Indyk and deputy special envoy Frank Lowenstein would travel to the region to facilitate talks to craft a two-state solution to the long-running conflict. The first round was July 31 in Washington.Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Adviser Susan Rice, meanwhile, will update Jewish community leaders on Thursday night and Arab-American leaders on Friday on the resumption of direct final status negotiations and listen to their concerns. The meetings are to take place at the White House. The Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem lands Israel captured in 1967. The renewed talks are to draw Israels borders with such a state. Since 1967, Israel has built dozens of settlements on war-won land deemed illegal by most of the international community.Israeli settlements are a contentious issue between the two sides.Earlier this month, the Israeli Cabinet expanded its list of West Bank settlements eligible for government subsidies, a decision that came just days after the resumption of the long-frozen peace talks. The Cabinet approved a range of housing subsidies and loans for more than 600 Israeli communities deemed national priority areas. The list includes poor towns in Israels outlying areas as well as dozens of settlements.Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat sent a letter to Kerry on Thursday complaining about the latest Israeli settlement announcements, saying they were an indication of Israels bad faith and lack of seriousness.Erekat urged Kerry to take the necessary action to ensure that Israel does not advance any of its settlement plans, and abides by its legal obligations and commitments. He added the Palestinians see the move as a direct defiance of the U.S. role in facilitating negotiations. The letter concluded by stressing the importance of stopping settlement activity because with continued settlement expansion it is difficult to see how direct negotiations will bring about progress towards a peace agreement.Psaki said U.S. officials were speaking with the Israeli government to express concern about the settlements. We do not accept the legitimacy of continued settlement activity and oppose any efforts to legitimize settlement outposts, Psaki said. The secretary has made clear that he believes both of the negotiating teams are at the table in good faith and are committed to working together to make progress.Separately, as part of the talks, Israel is to free 26 long-held Palestinian prisoners on Aug. 13, the day before the second round of talks are held in Jerusalem. It would be the first of four groups of a total of 104 veteran prisoners to be freed during the next few months. No date was announced for the talks in Jericho.

2 suspected US drones kill 9 militants in Yemen

Posted:

SANAA (AP) - Two US drone strikes killed a total of nine suspected Al Qaeda militants Thursday, a Yemeni military official said, the sixth and seventh such attacks in less than two weeks as the Arab nation is on high alert against terrorism. The uptick in drone strikes signals that the Obama administration is stepping up its efforts to target Yemens Al Qaeda offshoot Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula amid fears of attacks after the interception of a message between its leader and the global leader of the terror network.Since July 27, drone attacks have killed 31 suspected militants, according to an Associated Press count provided by Yemeni security officials. The Yemeni military official said the first drone attack killed six alleged militants in central Marib province, while the second killed three more in the al-Ayoon area of Hadramawt province in the south. Both airstrikes targeted cars, added the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The high alert in Yemen came after authorities revealed an Al Qaeda plot to target foreign embassies and international shipping lanes in the Red Sea.The U.S. and Britain evacuated diplomatic staff this week after learning of a threatened attack that prompted Washington to close temporarily 19 diplomatic posts in the Middle East and Africa. While the United States acknowledges its drone program in Yemen, it does not confirm individual strikes or release information on how many have been carried out.The program is run by the Pentagons Joint Special Operations Command and the CIA, with the military flying its drones out of Djibouti, and the CIA out of a base in Saudi Arabia. In the capital of Sanaa, an Associated Press reporter said a drone buzzed overhead for hours Wednesday and early Thursday, leaving residents anxiously wondering about its target and whether Al Qaeda militants were about to strike in the city.Thursdays first reported drone attack hit a car carrying the suspected militants in the district of Wadi Ubaidah, about 175 kilometers (109 miles) east of Sanaa.Badly burned bodies lay beside their vehicle, according to the official. Five of the dead were Yemenis, while the sixth was believed to be of another Arab nationality, he said.Yemeni authorities said Wednesday they uncovered an Al Qaeda plot to target foreign embassies in Sanaa and international shipping in the Red Sea.A U.S. intelligence official and a Mideast diplomat have told the AP that the embassy closures were triggered by the interception of a secret message between Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahri and Nasser al-Wahishi, the leader of the Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, about plans for a major attack. The discovery of the Al Qaeda plot prompted the Defense Ministry to step up security around the strategic Bab el-Mandeb waterway, which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Officials banning speedboats or fishing vessels from the area, and military forces have been ordered to shoot to kill anybody who arouses suspicion or refuses to identify themselves.Details of the plot were reminiscent of the suicide attack on the USS Cole in 2000 in Aden harbor that killed 17 American sailors.Yemeni troops have stepped up security across Sanaa, with multiple checkpoints set up and tanks and other military vehicles guarding vital institutions. The army has surrounded foreign installations, government offices and the airport with tanks and troops in the capital, as well as the strategic Bab al-Mandeb straits at the entrance to the Red Sea in the southern Arabian Peninsula.

Andy Murray eliminated in Montreal

MONTREAL (AP) - Wimbledon champion Andy Murray tumbled out of the Rogers Cup on Thursday, falling 6-4, 6-3 to Lavias Ernests Gulbis in the third round. The second-seeded Murray, a two-time Rogers Cup champion, was playing his second match since his Wimbledon victory. The loss ended the Scots winning streak at 13 matches.I looked on this monitor that I lost to him five times, but honestly I just remember the last match we played in Cincinnati, Gulbis said. It was a really tough match, but it was in 2010. It was a really long time ago. I was a different person, he was a different player.Rafael Nadal won his third round match, beating Polands Jerzy Janowicz 7-6 (6), 6-4.Nadal, the fourth-seeded Spanish star making his first tournament appearance since losing in the first round at Wimbledon, improved his ATP Tour-leading record to 45-3 including 7-0 on hardcourts.I had a very good victory today against a very difficult opponent, Nadal said about the 6-foot-8 Janowicz. I did a few things well during the match, a few things that I need to improve a little bit more. His serve is huge. His forehand and backhand can be very dangerous. When he plays with a little bit of regular shots, he will become a very difficult player to beat. If he is able to maintain the right level during whole match he will be a player that will be in the very top positions. The Rogers Cup winner in 2005 and 2008, Nadal will face Australias Marinko Matosevic, a 7-6 (7), 6-7 (10), 6-3 winner over Frances Benoit Paire.Canadas Vasek Pospisil beat fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Dog in Mexico kills toddler

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexico City prosecutors say they are considering criminal charges against the owner of a dog that dragged a toddler off the street and killed him.Prosecutors say the boy aged 1 year, 8 months was walking down a street with his mother on the citys southern outskirts when a boxer stuck its head through a fence, seized the child and pulled it into the yard where there were two other boxers and a pit bull. Together, they killed the child, though the dog owner tried to pull the boy away.Prosecutors said late Tuesday the dogs have been taken to a city animal-control facility to be examined to determine whether they represent a continuing danger. They say the owner might face charges of criminal negligence.

Australia carrying momentum into 4th Ashes test

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AP) - Stung by accusations of cheating and embarrassed by the off-field antics of a squad member, its hardly been the most comfortable of weeks for England since retaining the Ashes. And an improving Australia is threatening to make life much trickier when the fourth test starts at Chester-le-Street on Friday. The tourists are 2-0 down with two matches remaining and have to wait until the return series in Australia at the end of the year for a chance to reclaim the urn. But such was their dominance of the drawn third test at Old Trafford that squaring the series is a realistic target for Michael Clarkes side.I think England will be taking the positive that they are 2-0 up in the series and cant lose the Ashes but I think the way we played in Manchester has built some momentum for us, Clarke said Thursday, and plenty of confidence is flowing in our camp.We need to be able to back up what we showed in Manchester. After the lows of Lords, when the Australians capitulated to a 347-run loss in the second test, came the optimism of Old Trafford.Their misfiring batsmen finally got in the runs, with Clarke hitting a brilliant 187 and both Steve Smith and Chris Rogers falling just short of centuries. And their bowlers continued to look dangerous, particularly pacemen Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle and recalled offspinner Nathan Lyon.If it wasnt for rain over the final two days, the likelihood is that this series would still be alive. As it was, the match was eventually washed out as a draw, ensuring England retained the urn in the most anticlimactic of ways. The celebrations have proved to be fairly muted, though. It emerged on Wednesday that Monty Panesar, an unused member of the squad for that third test, was fined by police on Monday for reportedly urinating over bouncers at a nightclub. He wasnt included in the squad for the fourth test. And allegations from Australian broadcaster Channel Nine that some Englands players, including Kevin Pietersen, have attempted to cheat Hot Spot technology by using silicon tape around their bat edges have dominated the news agenda this week, further sullying the mood. Its kind of taken a little bit of the gloss off winning the Ashes in such a short space of time, but as players all that stuff is out of our control, England captain Alastair Cook said Thursday. Both Cook and Clarke have clearly grown weary of the DRS controversy that has blighted the series so far, and both teams will be hoping the focus is on cricket rather than technology over the next five days.Chester-le-Street, a town in northern England near Newcastle, is hosting its first Ashes test but a likely hard and dry pitch will make the teams feel at home the first three strips of the series had similar characteristics.England has the option of pepping up its pace attack with either the imposing Chris Tremlett or Graham Onions, who plays his county cricket here for Durham. Tim Bresnan would be the player likely to step down if there is a change.Australia, meanwhile, called up fast bowler Jackson Bird to its 12-man squad but shouldnt make any alterations unless Harris injury-plagued body is not up to the task of playing two tests in as many weeks.Clarke said the tourists have been leaning on batting coach Michael Di Venuto for advice after his time spent playing for Durham between 2007-12. But for the captain, itll simply be a case of more of the same from Manchester.I think, as a team, one area that we continue to talk about is consistency, especially when we are outside of Australia and in different conditions, Clarke said.Good teams back it up day after day. Thats our job from tomorrow.A draw will be enough for England to win a third straight Ashes series. In our eyes, the series is still very much alive, Cook said. We set out to win the series, not just to win the ashes, and thats still the goal.

Hot Spot to remain for final 2 Ashes tests

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AP) - The much-criticized Hot Spot technology will remain in place for the final two Ashes tests despite the series being blighted by several contentious calls and claims that players may have tampered with bats to avoid detection.Representatives from the England and Australia teams held a meeting with International Cricket Council general manager Geoff Allardice on Wednesday, after which both sides came out in support of the Decision Review System which includes the use of Hot Spots thermal-imaging cameras.I think it would be a very dangerous precedent to set in the middle of a series, England captain Alastair Cook said of the option of getting rid of DRS for the fourth and fifth tests. Both England and Australia have contacted the ICC during the series to complain about dismissals of their batsmen, and Allardice acknowledged that DRS has not performed as effectively during the past three tests as it has in other series. The purpose of my visit was to meet with the teams to listen to their feedback, and to identify potential improvements to DRS moving forward, Allardice said. It was very encouraging to hear both teams reiterate their support for the use of DRS.Some of the ideas that were suggested during the meetings could improve the system, and will be considered further by the ICC.The controversy over DRS heated up following allegations by Australian broadcaster Channel Nine this week that silicon tape might have been attached to the edges of bats to fool the DRS.That has angered members of both teams, particularly standout England batsman Kevin Pietersen, who slammed the accusations as hurtful lies. The ICC said Wednesday it wouldnt be investigating the claims, which Cook described Thursday as complete fabrication. Both sides have laughed at it, to be honest with you, at how strange a story it is and absurd, its just so blatantly not true, he said. Its not great when youre called a cheat.Unlike Cook, Australia captain Michael Clarke didnt attend the meeting with Allardice. He is growing weary of a subject that has dominated news conferences this series.I prefer not to take about it any more, Clarke said Thursday. For me, the focus is on cricket.England has retained the Ashes after going 2-0 up after three games. Australia can still draw the series by winning the fourth test starting at Chester-le-Street starting Friday and then the fifth test at The Oval starting Aug. 21.

IT gives new touch to Eid greeting

Posted:

LAHORE (Web Desk) –Information technology has changed our traditional cultural patterns and this shift is now quite visible on festive occasions like Eid.Swift and sophisticated means of communication are fast replacing the traditional ways of exchanging Eid greetings.More and more people are now using facilities like cell phone, SMS and Facebook for the purpose of saying Eid Mubarak to their near and dear ones across the world.Amount of time people spend making or listening to mobile phones calls on Eid day is surprising. No wonder mobile phone companies make huge profits on such days.Youth is particularly captivated by devices like Skype that gives an opportunity for face to face communication with relatives and friends, particularly those living abroad. The traditional Eid cards, once a major Eid craze, have these days become totally outmoded and our younger generation, perhaps, have no idea what an Eid card was.Social media is taking over many of the social aspects of community living, as is evidenced in how people are greeting each other for Eid Al Fitr.Majority of people choose social networks such as Facebook and Twitter as a way of wishing family and friends, especially those they cannot visit.Time is not far away when an Eid card will become an item for collection of antiques.Like every other thing in the world, electronic means of communication are not an unmixed blessing, and is definitely having an adverse impact on community living. It cannot be denied that the phenomenon is having exerting negative influence on the community and promoting anti-social trends, especially among the youth.Preoccupation with gadgets makes you shun collective pursuits in which we share happiness with the people living around us.No doubt the tradition of Eid fares is fading fast.We prefer the company of machines rather than humans and do not bother to visit even our immediate neighbours.People once used to visit family friends and relatives on second day of Eid, but this trend is also diminishing with the popularity of social media. There is no harm in depending on social media when distance is an issue but it should not be done at the cost of personal communication.
