Car bombs kill 36 people in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) - A wave of bombings, mainly targeting markets in and near Baghdad, killed 36 people on Tuesday, officials said, the latest in a surge of violence that has gripped Iraq.Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, meanwhile, vowed to defeat terrorists behind the relentless attacks and chase them out of the battered country.Violence has been on the rise across Iraq following a deadly crackdown by government forces on a Sunni protest camp in April but attacks against civilians and security forces have especially spiked since the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan in early July. The uptick in the bloodshed has raised fears of a return to the widespread killing that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. The deadliest among Tuesdays attacks came before sunset, when a car bomb exploded near a market in Baghdads southeastern suburbs of Nahrwan, police officials said. That attack killed six people and wounded 17.Later, a car bomb went off in a busy market in Baghdads downtown neighborhood of Karradah, killing five people and wounding 18.At night, a car bomb hit near a cafe in the citys northeastern suburb of Husseiniyah, killing five people and wounding 15. Minutes later, another car bomb exploded in Husseiniyah, killing three people and wounding 10.Isam Mohammed, the owner of a pharmacy near the site of the bombing in Karradah, said he was talking to a customer when he heard a big explosion.I fell to the floor because of the powerful blast. Seconds later, I stood up and went outside to see dead bodies and wounded people asking for help. The scene was shocking, said Mohammed, who was wounded slightly in the head.He blamed al-Malikis Shiite-led government and the security forces for the continuing security setback in the country.Government officials have only fortified the places where they and their families live, he said. They forget about the ordinary people who are being killed all the time.In southeastern Baghdad, a car bomb went off near an outdoor market in the Shiite neighborhood of Zafaraniyah as people were shopping before iftar, the evening meal that beaks the daytime fasting during Ramadan. Three people were killed and 10 were wounded there, officials said. Also, a bombing in a commercial street in the Dora area in southern Baghdad killed four and wounded 11. Police said another car bomb exploded near a market before sundown in southwestern Baghdad, killing five people and wounding 15.Also, a car bomb exploded late Monday night near an ice cream shop in the Abu Dashir area in southwestern Baghdad, killing five people and wounding 16.Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures for all attacks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.Popular outdoor places such as cafes and markets have been a favorite target for insurgents.Earlier on Tuesday, al-Maliki inspected military units near the Iraqi capital. According to a statement on his official website, al-Maliki said the Iraqi forces would continue chasing the terrorists until they are eliminated from Iraq. With Tuesdays deaths, at least 657 people have been killed since the start of Ramadan, according to an Associated Press count, making it the bloodiest Ramadan in Iraq since 2007.

Syria: Car bomb in Damascus suburb kills 18

BEIRUT (AP) - A car bomb in a pro-regime district near the Syrian capital killed at least 18 people on Tuesday while rebels captured a major air base in the north and swept through a string of villages in the heartland of President Bashar Assads minority Alawite sect in the west. The push by the opposition fighters is shaping up to be one of their strongest campaigns against government forces, which have recently captured significant territory in central Syria. The powerful car bomb struck in Damascus suburb of Jaramana late on Tuesday, killing 18 and setting several buildings and many cars on fire, the state-run SANA news agency said. Syrian state TV footage showed firefighters battling the blaze as residents stared in disbelief amid debris and mangled cars. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Rebels fighting to oust Assad have frequently targeted areas where regime supporters and members of the government and security forces live. Rebel groups linked to al-Qaida have claimed some of the deadliest car bombings and suicide attacks in the capital and beyond. In the north, rebels captured a major air base, depriving Assads forces of a main post near the border with Turkey and opening up a key road for supplies for their fighters from the neighboring country. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said members of the al-Qaida-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant led the battle for the Mannagh helicopter base. After months of trying to take it, the rebels launched an all-out offensive on Monday, when a Saudi suicide attacker blew up his vehicle outside the command center, the Observatory said. They captured the sprawling compound before dawn Tuesday, according to another activist group, the Aleppo Media Center.State media denied the base had fallen, and SANA said the nations armed forces are confronting terrorists with great courage inside the base.Assads regime refers to opposition fighters as terrorists, claiming they are part of conspiracy by the West and Gulf Arab countries like Saudi Arabia to destroy Syria. At least 10 rebels, including foreign fighters were killed in the fighting, according to the Observatory, which also said rebels had taken prisoner a number of government troops. It did not say how many soldiers died in the fighting.Rebel victories have been comparatively rare in recent months, and Assads forces have been on the offensive in central Syria.Mannagh, in the northern Aleppo province, is deep inside territory dominated by the Syrian opposition. Rebels have been trying since last year to capture it, but faced strong resistance.Rebels seized a part of the base in June, and since then, its fall had been widely expected. Its the largest base to fall to the rebels since opposition forces captured the Taftanaz base in the northern province of Idlib in January.

President George W. Bush has stent procedure

DALLAS (AP) - Former U.S. President George W. Bush has successfully undergone a heart procedure after doctors discovered a blockage in an artery.Bush spokesman Freddy Ford says a stent was inserted during a procedure Tuesday in Texas. The blockage was discovered Monday during Bushs annual physical.Ford says the blockage was opened with no complications. He says the 67-year-old Bush is expected to be discharged Wednesday.Ford described Bush as being in high spirits and eager to return home. Bush plans to resume his normal schedule Thursday.Bush has no previous history of heart trouble.Stents are mesh scaffoldings that prop open arteries typically clogged by years of quiet cholesterol buildup. About half a million people have stents inserted in the U.S. each year, generally involving an overnight stay in the hospital.Doctors usually guide a narrow tube through a blood vessel near the groin up to the heart, inflate a tiny balloon to flatten the blockage and insert the stent.Doctors often recommend first trying medication to treat a clogged artery. More severe blockages, particularly in several arteries, may require bypass surgery. Arteries can reclog, so patients often are put on heart-friendly diets or medication.

Suspected US drone kills 4 in Yemen

SANAA (AP) - A suspected U.S. drone killed four alleged al-Qaida members Tuesday in Yemen, as the U.S. and British embassies evacuated staff amid reports of a threatened attack by the terrorist group.Yemeni officials have suggested al-Qaida threats to multiple potential targets in their country in recent days, including foreign installations and government offices in the capital of Sanaa as well as to the strategic Bab al-Mandeb straits at the entrance to the Red Sea in the southern Arabian Peninsula. It is not clear if these reports are the same as the intelligence that led to the temporary shutdowns of 19 U.S. diplomatic posts across the Muslim world, reportedly instigated by an intercepted message between al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahri and his deputy in Yemen about plans for a major terrorist attack. The State Department on Tuesday ordered nonessential personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Yemen to leave the country. The department said in a travel warning that it had ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel due to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, adding that U.S. citizens should leave immediately because of an extremely high security threat level.Britains Foreign Office also said it has evacuated all staff from its embassy due to increased security concerns. The Foreign Office said the staff were temporarily withdrawn to the U.K. on Tuesday.

Bolt out to rescue world championships

Posted:

MOSCOW (AP) - Heading into the world championships, Usain Bolt stands as tall as ever. It just seems the sport around him has diminished.Matching the sheer exuberance and sell-out mass appeal of the London Olympics was always going to be a stretch, but a shocking array of no-shows and doping scandals in several of the sports premier events has hit athletics hard.It has left Bolt in a prime spot to add more gold to his gloried career. Of the athletes traveling to the Russian capital for next weeks championships, he has the fastest times in both the 100 and 200 meters. And given Jamaicas standout tradition in the 4x100 relay, he is a favorite to win another golden triple. Both won three golds at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, three at the London Games and three more at the 2009 worlds in Berlin. And with seven world championship medals already, a triple of any color would also move him alongside American great Carl Lewis as the most medaled man in the events history with 10 overall.Right now my only focus is winning three gold medals, Bolt said in an email exchange with The Associated Press.Only a year ago, Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake was challenging Bolt for Olympic supremacy in London, but came up with silver. This year was supposed to give him another shot, but the sprinter who won the world title in Daegu, South Korea, two years ago after Bolt false-started is out with a hamstring injury. In Blakes absence, a revitalized Tyson Gay was to challenge hard. Yet even though the American has the two top times over the 100 this year, Gays year, and perhaps his career, came crashing down when he relinquished his U.S. sprint spots for Moscow after failing an out-of-competition doping test.Almost at the same time, it was announced that former world-record holder Asafa Powell tested positive for the stimulant oxilofrone at the Jamaican national championships in June. The scandals leave Justin Gatlin as Bolts toughest competitor in the championships premier event. The 2004 Olympic champion already beat the Jamaican at the Diamond League meeting in Rome this spring, Bolts only competitive flaw this season. He knows that Im going to come with my A and hes going to come with his A game, Gatlin said. Were both the kind of people that turn it on when the lights come on in a competition. In his favorite race, the 200, Bolt is going for his third straight world title, and there his competition will be as much the clock as teammate Warren Weir.Bolt set the world record of 19.19 seconds at the 2009 worlds, but still feels improvements can be made. The 200 world record would be the one Id really love to break again, to see if its maybe even possible to get it under 19 seconds, Bolt said. And when Bolt sets himself a challenge, he all too often turns it into reality. The London Olympics still had plenty of world records, and none of the four were bigger than David Rudishas gold rush in the 800. The Kenyan, however, has seen his season go to waste because of a knee injury, robbing the championships of another big star.Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill is also a no-show because of an Achilles problem. And the local crowd wont even be able to shout for the defending champion, Tatyana Chernova, since she, too, is out injured.Even off the track, the sport has been hit hard. Besides Bolt, no track athlete quite sparked the imagination at the London Games like Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee South African who enthralled the 80,000-capacity crowds as he proved that competing can be as important as winning. One year later, Pistorius is preparing for his murder trial in the Valentine Days shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.Add the injuries and the doping scandals, and it becomes quite an unpredictable world championships.I dont ever remember going into a world championships with this sort of, I dont want to say doldrums, but Id be lying if I said we have the normal anticipation and hype going into the worlds, four-time Olympic medalist and commentator Ato Boldon said.Besides Bolt, Mo Farah will be going for multiple gold. After he clinched the long-distance double at the London Games last year, he is a favorite to repeat the 5,000-10,000 double at the Luzhniki Stadium. While the established stars are not there, it is also time for new names and fresh faces. At 24, Blessing Okagbare is hardly new, but Moscow could well become her breakthrough event. The Nigerian has been strong in the sprints and the long jump and, having beaten top challengers in all three events this year, she could be going for a triple gold. For someone brand new to much of the world, yet exhilirating beyond compare this season, look for Brianna Rollins, the 21-year-old hurdler from the United States. She became the third-best performer in history in the 100 hurdles when she ran an American record of 12.26 at the U.S. championships in the fastest time in 21 years. Not only does it underscore the potential for a world record at the championships, it also shows that, even with much new blood in the team, the United States looks set to dominate again.
