Egyptian army kills 9 militants in Sinai offensive

Posted:

EL-ARISH (AP) - Egyptian army troops backed by helicopter gunships attacked hideouts of Islamic militants in Sinai on Tuesday, killing nine and arresting 10, a military official said. The latest raids raised the death toll from four days of operations to 29.Officials have described the military offensive that started Saturday as the biggest sweep of the region in recent years, aiming to weed out al-Qaida-inspired groups who have taken hold in villages in northern Sinai.A military official said militant infrastructures, including weapons caches, missile launchers, and nearly 100 vehicles were targeted in the operation. The official said troops, often with the help of air cover, have also targeted shacks and homes used by militants as hideouts, and areas where they stacked fuel for vehicles. The official says explosives material, weapons and ammunition were found on Monday in the villages of el-Mahdiya and Naga Shabana, south of the town of Rafah near the border with the Palestinian Gaza Strip the militants killed, some 30 were arrested during raids mostly low level operatives but part of the network nonetheless. One officer and two soldiers have also been killed in the operation since Saturday, according to the official.Over 2,000 soldiers are taking part in the campaign one of the largest deployments in Sinai in peacetime. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.Officials say that the military is hunting hundreds of militants believed to be responsible for a series of attacks in a region they overran after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Since the overthrow of his successor, Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, Sinai has witnessed a spike of deadly and near-daily attacks. The militants, the officials say, belong to a number of well-known al-Qaida-inspired groups that seek the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate in northern Sinai, a region bordering Israel and the Gaza Strip. On Monday, state news agency MENA reported unnamed senior security officials as saying at least six militant groups with an estimated 5,000 members operate in Sinai.Militants have used the mountains in north and central Sinai as hideout, where the rugged terrain has proved difficult to search. Repeated security operations have increased tension with local residents, who accuse authorities of randomly targeting homes and arresting innocent people. On Monday, Morsi supporters protested in northern Sinai, blocking a road in Beir el-Abd a town leading to the provincial capital el-Arish. After the crowd clashed with residents, military troops cleared the road and fired in the air to disperse the crowd.A security official who also spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said two pro-Morsi supporters died after sustaining wounds during the shooting.

Bach elected IOC president

Posted:

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - Thomas Bach achieved a long-held dream on Tuesday as he was elected to the most powerful position in sport, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in Buenos Aires. The 59-year-old German -- the first Olympic gold medallist to become president -- won in the second round of voting by his fellow IOC members to beat his five male rivals bidding to succeed Jacques Rogge, who stepped down after 12 years in charge.Bach, gold medallist with the West German team in the team foil event in the 1976 Olympics, had been the frontrunner throughout the campaign and had for years been seen as the man most likely to replace Rogge.Bach, a lawyer by profession, is the ultimate insider having been a member since 1991 and has been vice-president three times while also heading up the Judicial Commission. He has also been one of the leaders in fighting doping, calling for athletes to be suspended for four years instead of the two-year ban in place at the moment. It had not been all plain sailing for Bach during the campaign with German media in particular posing questions about his ability to be president.Bach, who has fond memories of Buenos Aires as he and his team-mates came from 7-1 down to win the world foil title in 1975, looked to be in the eye of the storm in August. An academic report -- commissioned by him -- was released alleging that, like their then East German neighbours, West Germany too had indulged in systematic doping of their athletes.Bach dismissed the claims that he should have known more about what was going on and then set up an inquiry headed by a retired judge. He told AFP in August that even in his time as an athlete he had never witnessed doping firsthand. You heard things and read some stories in the newspapers, that something was going on in different sports, he said. An unflattering documentary on German television failed to turn up anything that could seriously damage him, while his relations with increasingly influential Kuwaiti IOC member Sheikh Ahmed al-Sabah also seemed to leave him unharmed. The front page of one Argentinian newspaper last week had a cartoon of Sabah, wearing a t-shirt with Bachs face on it, grinning and with his thumb raised, while rival Denis Oswald went public and slammed him for his business links with Kuwait. However, it made little impact and Oswald, like his fellow candidates, were no match for the machine behind Bach. All were high quality candidates.Puerto Rican banker and philanthropist Richard Carrion would have brought charisma, lacking in Rogges 12 years, to the job as well as financial know how -- it was he who negotiated a record broadcasting deal with NBC for exclusive American rights up to the 2020 Games. However, IOC members hold great store by a sporting background and the 60-year-olds lack of that counted against him.Ng Ser Miang and Wu Ching-Kuo represented Asias hopes of becoming the first president from the continent but while both are well regarded, with Wu having done remarkable work for boxing especially, they failed to convince in their campaigns.Sergey Bubkas exploits as an athlete stood out in terms of sporting achievement and he would have been the youngest ever president but unlike his time as a pole vaulter his campaign never got off the ground.

Financial crisis drives up Greek suicide rate

Posted:

ATHENS (AP) - A Greek aid group says suicides have increased by 45 percent during the first four years of Greeces financial crisis, and warned there are indications of a further very large rise in the past two years. The Athens-based group Klimaka said Tuesday that officially reported suicides rose steadily between 2007 and 2011, accounting for an annual jump in deaths from 328 to 477 in that period, according to data from the Greek Statistical Authority. The group said, based on its own research, the number of suicides has continued to rise through 2012 and 2013.Greece still has one of the lowest suicide rates in Europe, but a dramatic rise in poverty and unemployment since the debt-strapped nation began imposing harsh austerity measures has been blamed for the increase in deaths.

Top 1 percent took record share of 2012 US income

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The top 1 percent of U.S. earners collected 19.3 percent of household income in 2012, their largest share in Internal Revenue Service figures going back a century.U.S. income inequality has been growing for almost three decades. But until last year, the top 1 percents share of pre-tax income had not yet surpassed the 18.7 percent it reached in 1927, according to an analysis of IRS figures dating to 1913 by economists at the University of California, Berkeley, the Paris School of Economics and Oxford University. One of them, Emmanuel Saez of the University of California, Berkeley, said the incomes of the richest Americans might have surged last year in part because they cashed in stock holdings to avoid higher capital gains taxes that took effect in January.Last year, the incomes of the top 1 percent rose 19.6 percent compared with a 1 percent increase for the remaining 99 percent. The richest Americans were hit hard by the financial crisis. Their incomes fell more than 36 percent in the Great Recession of 2007 to 2009 as stock prices plummeted. Incomes for the bottom 99 percent fell just 11.6 percent, according to the analysis. But since the recession officially ended in June 2009, the top 1 percent have enjoyed the benefits of rising corporate profits and stock prices: 95 percent of the income gains reported since 2009 have gone to the top 1 percent. That compares with a 45 percent share for the top 1 percent in the economic expansion of the 1990s and a 65 percent share from the expansion that followed the 2001 recession. The income figures include wages, pension payments, dividends and capital gains from the sale of stocks and other assets. They do not include so-called transfer payments from government programs such as unemployment benefits and Social Security.

Britain considers swapping paper money for plastic

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - The Bank of England is considering replacing paper money with polymer bank notes which are billed as cleaner, stronger and more secure. The bank said Tuesday it will hold a public consultation, bringing samples of plastic money to shopping centers so that members of the public can feel the difference.Polymer bank notes, made from transparent plastic film coated with layers of ink, are used by countries such as Australia, Mexico and Canada.Proponents say they are longer-lasting and harder to forge than paper notes. But critics say the bills are slippery, stick together and do not fold as easily as paper.A British decision is due by December. If the plan is approved, plastic 5-pound notes could be in circulation by 2016.

Pakistan reduces Zimbabwe to 237-8

Posted:

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - Pakistan regained control of the second test against Zimbabwe in the final session of the first day on Tuesday, reducing the host to 237-8 after taking six wickets in 35 overs.Seamer Junaid Khan led the attack with 3-55 and Rahat Ali and spinner Abdur Rehman had two wickets each as the Zimbabweans fell away after a promising 110-run partnership between Hamilton Masakadza and Brendan Taylor earlier put them on track following a torrid start.Zimbabwes most experienced batsmen both made half centuries, but after Saeed Ajmal removed Masakadza soon after lunch for 75, the resistance crumbled.Rehman picked up Taylor for 51 and the Pakistanis took 5-65 at the end of the day to take early charge of the second and final match. Pakistan leads the series 1-0.Earlier, Zimbabwe fought back to 165-3 at tea on the first day of the second test against Pakistan, adding 100 runs for the loss of just Hamilton Masakadza in the second session on Tuesday.Masakadza departed after being caught at slip off spinner Saeed Ajmal for 75, but captain Brendan Taylor was well set on 48 not out and Malcolm Waller was 18 not out at Harare Sports Club.Zimbabwe faced a tough opening spell, losing Tino Mawoyo off the second ball of the test and fellow opener Vusi Sibanda for 14 to be 31-2 before Masakadza and Taylor combined for a 110-run stand for the third wicket. Zimbabwes most experienced batsmen dragged it out of early trouble, giving it a chance at a solid first-innings score and avoiding a fifth series defeat in seven since returning to test cricket in 2011.Seamers Rahat Ali and Junaid Khan and offspinner Ajmal had one wicket each for Pakistan, which won the first test by 221 runs and was immediately on top at the start of the second, although Mawoyos early dismissal appeared to be a mistake with TV replays showing the ball flicked his thigh and not his bat before carrying through to wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal. He was still given out caught behind to Khan, and Sibanda chopped a short ball from Ali onto his stumps in the 17th over in a labored start for the home team, which didnt score a run until the fifth over.Masakadza counterattacked with nine fours and a six, and Taylor had hit six boundaries on his return to action after missing the first test because of the birth of his first child. Masakadza fell seven overs before tea when he edged to Mohammad Hafeez at slip, but Waller settled in alongside Taylor, striking 16 of his 18 runs in fours.Taylor opted to bat first on a Harare pitch which had just two days to recover after the first test and amid concerns that the surface would deteriorate quickly later in the game because of its overuse.Struggling national body Zimbabwe Cricket relocated the second test from Bulawayo to Harare at late notice to save costs.

16 killed in Iraq different bomb attacks

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Bomb attacks targeting both Shiite Muslims and Sunnis killed at least 16 people in Iraq on Tuesday in violence that in recent months has raised fears of a return to the full-blown civil conflict that wracked the country in 2006-07.In the ethnically mixed province of Diyala, a car bomb targeted Shiite Muslims in a marketplace in the village of Anbakiya, killing five people in the third such attack over the past two months, police said.It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack, but Sunni Islamist groups including al Qaeda, which view Shiites as non-believers, have been regaining momentum in Iraq, galvanized by civil war in neighbouring Syria.Another car bomb targeted a Shiite tribal leader who survived the attack in which three others were killed, and a third blast in Hwaish village, also in Diyala, claimed three more lives.A roadside bomb killed five people in a coffee shop in a Sunni area of Latifiya, around 40 km (25 miles) from Baghdad, in a volatile area known as the triangle of death, where 16 members of one Shiite family were slain last week.Sectarian tensions in Iraq and the wider region have been brought to the boil by the Syrian conflict, which has pitted mainly Sunni rebels against the government of Bashar al-Assad, whose Alawite sect derives from Shiite Islam. The monthly toll of Iraqis killed in acts of violence has risen at times this year to the highest since the intercommunal bloodletting that peaked in 2006-07, after a 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Some 800 Iraqis were killed in acts of violence in August, according to the United Nations.

Smith, Steyn back in South Africa squad

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - Graeme Smith was named in South Africas test and one-day squads on Tuesday for the series against Pakistan next month even though the opening batsman hasnt fully recovered from ankle surgery.Head selector Andrew Hudson said team management should have a definite picture of Smiths recovery in the next two weeks after South Africas test captain had pins inserted to repair a stress fracture in his left ankle in May and missed the Champions Trophy and the Proteas limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka.Fast bowler Dale Steyn returned to both squads alongside Smith after he also missed the trip to Sri Lanka in July and August with injury.Allrounder Jacques Kallis was again left out of the ODI squad having chosen not to play at the Champions Trophy for personal reasons, and South Africa will continue to manage the limited-overs workload of Kallis, who will turn 38 next month during the series against Pakistan in United Arab Emirates. Kallis has said he still wants to play at the 2015 World Cup, but hasnt appeared in a one-day international since February 2012.Top-ranked South Africa plays two tests against Pakistan from Oct. 14, followed by five ODIs and two Twenty20 games.Management believes Smith will be fit to play in both the tests and one-dayers, although his rehabilitation will be carefully monitored, Hudson said.(We) do not want to overload him too much during the early stages of his return, Hudson said.South Africa kept faith with the same test squad that delivered series whitewashes over New Zealand and Pakistan at home this year. The Proteas are unbeaten in their last 12 test series and have won six straight. They last lost a test in 2011 and last lost a series in 2009.Pakistan-born legspinner Imran Tahir and seamers Wayne Parnell and Vernon Philander were recalled to the one-day squad, where South Africas record has not been as impressive, losing 4-1 in Sri Lanka.Cricket South Africa said it would select the Twenty20 squad to face Pakistan after the upcoming Champions League T20 in India.

Talks with Taliban our own decision: Nisar

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said that the decision to initiate process of dialogue with Taliban was home-made and not taken under foreign pressure or influence.Addressing a news conference here on Tuesday‚ Nisar said the resolution adopted by the APC was an outcome of the consensus among political and military leadership. The minister said the message emanating from the APC was welcomed instantly by Taliban‚ which augurs well for peace. He said we want to extricate the country from the vicious cycle of bloodshed in the name of Islam and Pakistan. He stated that the APC has given mandate to the government for dialogue and a framework for the purpose is ready. He said political parties and media would be kept abreast of the progress as and when needed.Nisar clarified that the attitude of the military leadership encouraged political leaders to move towards consensus.Replying to a question‚ Ch. Nisar Ali Khan said efforts for peace and reconciliation were initiated soon after elections but these were sabotaged through drone strikes. He said contacts with certain people who are interested in bringing about peace in the region continued over the last two months and even after the TTP withdrew its offer of dialogue. He said the venue‚ level of discussions and demands would become clear after the first interaction. He said it would be their priority to address issues involved one by one as the situation if complicated and there is no quick fix solution. To a question‚ he said the Army Chief told political leaders that he was not aware of any understanding with the United States on drone strikes. In an apparent reference to the past‚ the minister said the decision to hold dialogue was not taken to pave the way for military operation‚ rather the entire leadership of the country sincerely wanted to resolve the issue through peaceful means.About Karachi action‚ the minister said during the last four days‚ Rangers carried out 74 targeted raids arresting 158 criminals involved in garget killing‚ extortion‚ kidnapping for ransom and terrorism. Rangers recovered 111 weapons from pistols to Klashnikovs besides 1862 pieces of ammunition. He said Police is also carrying out targeted action against criminals not covered under the four categories being taken care of by Rangers. Police has so far arrested 516 criminals.Nisar said some of those arrested are claiming about their affiliation with some political parties and the intelligence reports confirm their statement. He said despite this no political party has so far objected to the targeted action against criminals which is a good thing.

Man living alone in Siberian forest for 16 years found

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian authorities have found a young man living alone in a Siberian forest after having apparently spent most of his life living there in a hut with his parents, local officials said Tuesday.Locals near the town of Belokurikha found the man, who told the local prosecutor that he was born in 1993 and had lived in the forest since 1997, when his family decided to leave society. But his parents left him alone in the hut in May before he finally went to a nearby village to ask for help when the summer ended, the authorities said. The local prosecutors office, alarmed that the man may have to spend the Siberian winter in a forest by himself, appealed in court to have his identification documents reestablished so that he can seek state support, prosecutor Roman Fomin told AFP.I am not sure if he needs all this attention, he said. He looked normal and healthy, he only spoke slowly, since he doesnt communicate as often as most people. He said that the mans family went to live in the wild as a conscious decision, but apparently not out of religious reasons. They are not religious people, he said.He was just afraid that he wont survive the winter without his parents, Fomin said. But maybe they have already come back.Fomin said that a local woman had brought the young man to the prosecutors out of fear that he may need help through the cold winter, but the man then had gone back to his hiding place in the forest. The Russian media are variously calling him forest boy or the Siberian Mowgli, after the main character in Rudyard Kiplings The Jungle Book.Belokurikha is a well-known resort area in Russias picturesque Altai region in south Siberia, known for mineral springs, health spas, and skiing.

US employers posted fewer jobs, hired more

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - US employers advertised fewer jobs in July but hired more workers, a mixed sign that suggests only modest improvement in the job market.Job openings fell 180,000 in July to 3.7 million, the Labor Department said Tuesday. Thats down from 3.9 million the previous month, which was revised lower.Overall hiring increased to 4.4 million, up from 4.3 million in June and 4.17 million a year ago. Still, hiring has fluctuated in recent months is below the 5 million pace before the recession.Layoffs dropped 1.5 million, the lowest level on records dating back to 2001.The latest data on job openings and turnover in the workforce reaffirmed the painfully slow but steady progress taking place over the past three years. The economy is adding jobs. But much of the improvement has come from a drop in layoffs not rapid hiring.Employers added 169,000 net jobs in August, and many fewer than previously thought in July and June, the government said Friday. The unemployment rate fell to 7.3 percent, but only because more people gave up looking for work. The government doesnt count someone as unemployed unless they are actively looking for work.Last weeks figures reflect net job gains, which is total hiring minus the number of people who were laid off, quit or retired. The Job Openings and Labor Turnover report, released Tuesday, shows overall hiring levels as well as job openings, layoffs and quits. It provides greater detail than the monthly employment report.Fewer jobs have made it harder for the unemployed to find work. For example, in July there were 3.1 unemployed people competing for each open job. In a healthy economy the ratio is 2 to 1.Job openings fell in nearly all industries, including construction, retail, health care and government. They rose in manufacturing and hotels and restaurants.Slightly more people quit their jobs, a positive sign that they are more confident in the job market. Most people quit when they have a new job or believe they will be able to find one.The number of people quitting rose to 63,000 to 2.27 million in July. Still, in a strong economy 2.5 million to 3 million workers quit their jobs every month.Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Vice Chair Janet Yellen have both said that they are monitoring the job openings report for signs that hiring is improving in a sustainable way.Fed policymakers will meet next week to decide whether to reduce their $85 billion in monthly bond purchases. The bond purchases have kept longer-term interest rates low, encouraging consumers and businesses to borrow and spend more.Fed officials are deeply divided about the timing of the move, but many economists expect them to begin tapering their purchases in September.

Death toll in Hidu-Muslim riots rises to 31

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - The death toll from Hindu-Muslim clashes in Indias most populous state Uttar Pradesh has climbed to 31, police said Tuesday, but the violence has been brought under control. The unrest, during which mobs burned houses and a mosque, erupted over the weekend in the village of Muzaffarnagar, 105 kilometres (65 miles) northeast of capital New Delhi. The death toll has risen to 31, but now everything is peaceful. Things are fully under control -- but we are on high alert, Lucknow police inspector R.R. Bharti told AFP by telephone. The central government on Monday rushed 5,000 extra paramilitary personnel to the affected area of the state, which has a history of religion and caste-based violence in its 200-million population.Uttar Pradesh witnessed riots in 1992 following the razing of a mosque by a Hindu mob. More than 2,000 people -- mostly Muslims -- were killed after the 16th-century structure in Ayodhya was demolished. The latest violence has triggered speculation that parties are seeking to polarise the politically pivotal state along religious lines ahead of general elections due next year.Security forces including the army were patrolling in riot-hit areas -- staging so-called flag marches intended to show their presence, Bharti said.Villagers crowded police stations and mosques seeking safety as local media reported that mobs had ambushed people attempting to flee violence-torn areas on Monday.I have lost three of my relatives and 11 people from my village have died so far, Khairunissa, a Muslim woman who goes by one name, told the Press Trust of India.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed grief and shock over the violence on Monday and promised all required assistance to the state government for tackling the situation. The clashes erupted late Saturday after thousands of Hindu farmers held a meeting to demand justice over the killing of three Hindu men who had protested when a woman was allegedly harassed.Inflammatory speeches calling for action against Muslims were allegedly made during the meeting and the farmers were attacked as they were returning home, triggering an angry backlash, a senior police officer said.Clashes then broke out in neighbouring villages between Hindus and Muslims and the army stepped in to try to control the situation.
