British football trio admitted for Europe adventure

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - A revamped Tottenham Hotspur will headline the Premier League's quest for Europa League success when the group stage begins on Thursday.Spurs, winners of the competition in 1972 and 1984, will also be joined by Welsh outfit Swansea City and English second-tier side and European debutants Wigan Athletic.Tottenham again finished agonisingly out of the Champions League places last season, consigning them to the Europa League for the third year running.Andre Villas-Boas's men were knocked out at the quarter-final stage on penalties by Switzerland's Basel a year ago, but a favourable draw -- Tromso, Sheriff Tiraspol and Anzhi Makachkala accompany Spurs in Group K -- has the north Londoners targeting another deep run.Despite the departure of talisman Gareth Bale, who joined Real Madrid for more than 90 million euros ($120 million) earlier this month, Spurs have reinforced their squad with seven new signings.Obviously the Europa League is a massive competition and we've got a big squad this season, so we're looking to really challenge on all fronts, said midfielder Andros Townsend, who faces increased competition following the arrivals of Christian Eriksen, Paulinho and Erik Lamela. We're looking to go into Thursday's game with confidence from the win (over Norwich) on Saturday and hope we get a good result. We've got the squad to challenge on all fronts, but first and foremost we've got to focus on getting out of our group, added Townsend ahead of the visit of Norway's Tromso.Swansea travel to Valencia in their opening Group A match, marking a return to Spain for manager Michael Laudrup, who played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid and guided Getafe to the quarter-finals in 2008.Laudrup's Premier League side, who qualified by virtue of winning the English League Cup, features a sizeable Spanish contingency, although ex-Valencia winger Pablo Hernandez will miss out against his former club due to a hamstring injury. It will be another very difficult game for us, said Laudrup, whose team were also drawn with Russian club Kuban Krasnodar and Swiss side St Gallen.Valencia are a very good side, but our supporters will be looking forward to going over there, and obviously the players too. That sentiment was echoed by defender Ashley Williams, who added: It is nights and games like this that you look forward to and as a squad we will certainly give this our very best shot.Wigan's first foray into Europe comes with the Latics grinding it out in the Championship after their shock FA Cup win over Manchester City was followed by relegation from the top flight. The extra fixtures will undoubtedly complicate Wigan's quest for an immediate return to the Premier League, but partaking in European competition was something chairman Dave Whelan never thought he would see.It is somewhere you think you will never ever get to - apart from holidays in Majorca, said Whelan ahead of the club's trip to Belgian outfit Zulte Waregem in Group D that also includes Russia's Rubin Kazan and Slovenia's Maribor. It's exciting going into Europe for the first time for almost everyone in the squad, and of course for the first time for the club, and we'll see what we can do on that stage, added midfielder Callum McManaman.Elsewhere, Italian hopefuls Fiorentina, who host Pacos Ferreira, will have to make do without Germany striker Mario Gomez, who was ruled out for up to seven weeks after damaging knee ligaments over the weekend.Two-time winners Sevilla start their campaign against Portuguese newcomers Estoril, while Lyon go to Real Betis of Spain and PSV Eindhoven host Bulgarian side Ludogorets.

Champions League: PSG beats Olympiakos 4-1

PIRAEUS (AP) - Thiago Motta headed in two second-half goals as Paris Saint-Germain beat Olympiakos 4-1 in a Champions League Group C match on Tuesday.Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a late penalty for the French champions, but set up their first goal in the 19th minute, picking out Maxwell in the area before Edinson Cavani sprinted forward for the tap in.Vladimir Weiss tore through the PSG defense for the equalizer six minutes later, weaving past three defenders for an impressive solo effort. The French club patiently pushed forward, and forced Olympiakosto to defend for most of the second half.Substitute Ezequiel Lavezzi gave PSG additional against a tiring Olympiakos defense. He provided the corner kicks headed in by Motta with identical precision in the 68th minute and the 73rd. Marquinios completed the scoring with another header in the 86th.They caused us some problems as we expected from Olympiakos at home. But we gained possession and Olympiakos used up a lot of their energy in the first half. Their performance fell off considerably in the second half, so we kept playing hard and we got the result, PSG coach Laurent Blanc said.We fell too far back in the first half ... but closed the gap between defense and our forwards after the break. We had a lot more space in the second half ... I am certainly happy with the result.Cheered on by 30,000 noisy fans at Karaiskaki Stadium, the Greeks club had a strong start and hit the bar twice in 15 minutes, with Weiss in the opening seconds and again with David Fuster. But PSG withstood the early threats and waited out the hosts, with Ibrahimovic falling back and Uruguay striker Cavani posing a constant threat.Ibrahimovic was knocked to the ground by Andreas Samaris but missed from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute, his shot saved by newly-signed Olympiakos goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez. The score made it look like Paris Saint-Germain had an easy win, but that wasn't the case. To lose this way and with that score was tough for us. Olympiakos coach Michel Gonzalez said.We lost energy and stopped circulating the ball properly, so that let them into the game ... When you make mistakes at this level, to pay dearly for them, he addedOlympiakos midfielder Yiannis Maniatis thanked fans for their continued support as their team fell behind. We played an open game against PSG and the fans were tremendous ... But it was those three dead balls that cost us, he said.We really let ourselves down. You lose control for a minute and the goals start going in against you.

Austria: Charred body of suspected killer found

Posted:

MELK (AP) - Austrian police hunting for the killer of four people found the charred body early Wednesday of what they believe was the gunman after pushing through a wall into a smoke-filled hidden basement on the farm grounds the suspect had holed up in.Regional police spokesman Roland Scherscher told reporters SWAT teams discovered the body after extinguishing a fire in the small cellar that was accessible only through a hidden door.He said the corpse was so badly burned that it was impossible to identify it but police assumed it was that of the gunman, who had holed up on the farm grounds more than 24 hours before the charred remains were found.Police had to push against the wall to enter the room, he said. Because the perpetrator could have been hiding behind each corner, the search took more than four hours as police cautiously combed through the two story building, said Schercher.Police said final identification and cause of death would have to wait until forensic experts had finished their work. They said the assumption was that the suspect had laid the fire. The gunman killed three police officers and a paramedic early Tuesday before barricading himself in a farm building near Melk, about 70 kilometers (40 miles) west of Vienna.During the 12-hour standoff, he shot sporadically at heavily armed police. Police said he fired the last shot about an hour before helmeted officers wearing body armor and toting assault rifles piled into three Austrian army tanks and moved in. More than 100 police officers cordoned off the area.Austrian media said the man was a suspected poacher. Police named the suspect as 55-year-old Alois Huber, owner of a trucking firm. The killings began about 24 hours before the suspect barricaded himself, after police stopped the man on a road near a wilderness area west of Vienna where there has been frequent poaching. The gunman fled in his car, which landed in a ditch near the central Austrian town of Annaberg, then shot and wounded a member of Austria's Cobra SWAT team at a police checkpoint, said Interior Ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck. The police officer later died.An ambulance raced to the scene, but the gunman shot and killed its driver as he tried to give first aid to the wounded policeman. The gunman also shot and wounded another officer at the scene. Grundboeck said he was expected to recover. The attacker then fatally shot another police officer at a roadblock before barricading himself in the farm building .Later on Tuesday, another officer who had been missing was found shot dead in his patrol car near the farm, said Grundboeck. Scherscher said that officer was apparently killed after the suspect carjacked the police vehicle and took him hostage.Scherscher said he could not confirm an Austrian media report that the suspect was shot in the abdomen by police before he sought refuge inside the farm building. The provincial government of Lower Austria ordered black flags flown from all public buildings in honor of the victims.

Tony Abbott sworn in as Australia's new PM

Posted:

CANBERRA (AFP) - Tony Abbott was sworn in as Australia's new prime minister on Wednesday and immediately ordered the scrapping of the nation's carbon tax and the halting of asylum-seeker boats. The 55-year-old conservative pledged to get down to work after a ceremony at Government House in Canberra where his Liberal/National government officially brought six years of Labor rule to a close.Today is not just a ceremonial day, it's an action day. The Australian people expect us to get straight down to business and that's exactly what this government will do, Abbott said in a statement. He was elected on September 7 on a pledge to quickly scrap taxes on corporate pollution and mining profits imposed under the Labor administration, as well as introducing a costly paid parental leave scheme and a vow to build new roads across the vast nation.Top of his to-do list is axing the unpopular carbon tax, which charges the country's biggest polluters for their emissions at a fixed price. His new government instead favours a direct action plan that includes an emissions reduction fund to pay companies to increase their energy efficiency, and money for schemes to replenish soil carbon and plant 20 million trees. As soon as I return to Parliament House from the swearing-in ceremony, I will instruct the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet to prepare the carbon tax repeal legislation, said Abbott, who once famously said that evidence blaming mankind for climate change was absolute crap.

China mulls to train astronauts from other countries

BEIJING (Reuters) - China aims to train astronauts from other countries who will conduct missions with their Chinese counterparts state news agency Xinhua cited a senior official as saying.China will also share the technological achievements of its manned space program with other countries, especially with developing ones, Xinhua quoted Wang Zhaoyao, head of the countrys manned space program office, as saying.Cooperation should be either bilateral or multilateral, with diversified and flexible models based on peace and a win-win cooperation, he said. The move will happen at a proper time, Wang told an international seminar in Beijing. Xinhua gave no other details.China successfully completed its latest manned space mission in June, when three astronauts spent 15 days in orbit and docked with an experimental space laboratory critical in Beijings quest to build a working space station by 2020.China is still far behind established space superpowers, the United States and Russia, which decades ago learned the docking techniques China is only now mastering. It is already working with Russia in the field of astronaut training, has a cooperative relationship with the European Space Agency and has begun talking to its opposite numbers in the United States, Wang added.Beijing insists its space program is for peaceful purposes, but the U.S. Defense Department has highlighted Chinas increasing space capabilities and said Beijing is pursuing a variety of activities aimed at preventing its adversaries from using space-based assets during a crisis.Wang said that China will consistently adhere to the principle of peaceful use, equality, mutual benefit and common development in the construction of its manned space station.China aims to land its first probe on the moon at the end of this year.

NASA clears Orbital Sciences for test flight to space station

CAPE CANAVERAL (Reuters) - NASA cleared a second commercial company to launch a cargo ship to the International Space Station, with blastoff slated this week from a Virginia spaceport. If successful, Orbital Sciences Corp. would join privately owned Space Exploration Technologies, also known as SpaceX, in flying supplies to the space station, a $100 billion research complex that orbits about 250 miles above Earth.Orbital Sciences two-stage Antares rocket, which made a successful debut flight in April, is scheduled to lift off at 10:50 a.m. EDT on Wednesday from the Virginia-owned Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, which operates under a lease agreement with NASAs Wallops Flight Facility.Like SpaceXs Dragon capsules, which so far have made three flights to the space station, Cygnus is intended to restore a U.S. supply line to the station following the retirement of NASAs space shuttles in 2011.We have them lined up to use them fairly regularly, NASAs space station program manager Mike Suffredini told reporters during a prelaunch press conference. This is what we said was going to be the fleet to take care of the U.S. segment (of the space station) and we need to have it, Suffredini said.Russia, Europe and Japan also fly freighters to the station, a partnership of 15 nations.Unlike traditional government contracts, NASA provided $684 million in seed funds as well as technical support to SpaceX and Orbital Sciences to develop their rockets, capsules and launch facilities. The firms also hold a combined $3.5 billion in contracts to fly cargo to the station for NASA.SpaceX, which was awarded its development contract in 2006, is preparing to debut an upgraded version of its Falcon 9 rocket later this month.NASA wants SpaceX to have two or three missions under its belt with the new rocket before resuming supply runs to the station, Suffredini said.Orbital Sciences, which began its partnership with NASA 18 months later, stands to collect a final $2.5 million development payment from NASA upon completion of its demonstration flight to the station. If the launch occurs as planned on Wednesday, astronauts aboard the station on Sunday plan to use a robotic crane to pluck the Cygnus capsule from orbit and attach it to a docking port.Unlike Dragon capsules, Cygnus spacecraft are designed to burn up in the atmosphere after they are loaded with trash and depart the station. For its orbital debut, Cygnus will be carrying a half-load of about 1,543 pounds (700 kg) of food and other cargo considered non-essential by NASA in case the rocket or spacecraft encounters problems and cannot reach the station. For a demo flight, we dont typically fill them up, Suffredini said.Cygnus is expected to remain docked at the station for about a month. Should the mission be successful, Orbital Sciences plans to return to that station in December for the first flight under a $1.9 billion cargo resupply contract with NASA.For now, NASA is the only customer for Cygnus, but Orbital Sciences expects new business as the United States and other countries launch exploration initiatives beyond the space stations orbit. We think Cygnus has the capability to do a lot more than just deliver cargo to the station, said Frank Culbertson, a former astronaut who now serves as Orbital Sciences executive vice president.Thales Alenia Space, a consortium led by Europes largest defense electronics company, Frances Thales, is a prime contractor on the capsule.

Iran blocked Website opens briefly due to technical glitch

Posted:

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Word of the opening of Irans blocked social media sites was spread, of course, by social media itself: in celebratory tweets and breathless Facebook posts.Hours later, the same sites Tuesday chewed over the sobering reality that the four-year-old firewalls were back in place.Irans Internet overseers blamed a technical glitch on the brief window to the Web.But others interpreted the seesaw events as signs of growing internal struggles between the moderate-leaning President Hasan Rouhani who has promised to ease Irans cyber-censorship and hard-liners in the Islamic establishment who see no benefit in lifting restrictions intended to foil potential political opponents and reformists. The chances are highly unlikely that Irans secretive Web watchers will provide a full accounting of the brief freedoms, which allowed users to access banned sites such as Twitter and Facebook directly rather than having to use proxy servers that bypass Iranian controls. The semiofficial Mehr news agency quoted Abdolsamad Khoramabadi, a member of the board overseeing the Internet, as saying the filters were temporarily removed late Monday by a technical failure regarding some Internet service providers. He warned, too, that an investigation will also study the possibility of an inside job.We are probing it, he said. Some Rouhani backers, however, already believe they have the answer: His government had a hand in freeing up the Internet, even if briefly.Scores of Facebook users quickly posted Rouhani, Mochakerim, or Farsi for Thank you, Rouhani.God liberated Facebook, wrote Mohammad Reza on his Facebook account. This isnt really about a glitch even if one really happened, said Scott Lucas, an Iranian affairs expert at Britains Birmingham University and editor of EAWorldView, a foreign policy website. The bigger picture is that the Internet is central to the political battles inside the country in both the direction of domestic and foreign affairs. The clampdown on Irans social media was in response to the street riots and unrest after the disputed 2009 re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whose opponents were among the first in the Middle East to harness the Web to organize protests.Ironically, Iranian officials also have recognized the usefulness of the social media they consider too dangerous to be allowed in the public domain.Accounts carrying the name of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei typically churn out dozens of comments a day.Authorities insist Khamenei does not maintain his own accounts, but he has not disavowed them raising speculation that they are fed by close aides and have his tacit approval. On Tuesday, the Khamenei-branded Twitter account equated diplomacy to a wrestling match. Its good to grapple, it said, but important to member you are still foes an apparent reference to possible increased outreach to the U.S. during Rouhanis trip to New York later this month for the U.N. General Assembly. The comment was similar to an earlier state TV report quoting Khamenei.Khameneis top aides, including former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, were ahead of even Rouhani in embracing social media during this years presidential race. Now some of the group that has been resisting (social media) is changing its mind, said Tehran-based political analyst Saeed Leilaz. But there are powerful hard-line factions that want no official cracks in what U.S. President Barack Obama once called Irans electronic curtain.Irans Supreme Council for Cyberspace, the main oversight body, is directly linked to the Revolutionary Guard and the ruling clerics. Both groups have given no signals of interest in easing the Internet blocks on millions of websites that range from opposition voices to the BBCs Persian Service. The countrys young and highly educated population is adept at beating the controls through proxy service sites and other methods. Rouhani believes its time to lift them from the shadows of the cyber world. In a speech to parliament in August to introduce his telecommunications minister, Mahmoud Vaezi, Rouhani told lawmakers that Iran needs active foreign communication to connect Iranian enterprises to the outside world for both transferring technology and entrepreneurship.
