Syria regime raid on Aleppo kills at least 33: NGO

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - Syrian warplanes hit a popular market in a rebel-held district of Aleppo on Thursday killing at least 33 civilians, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.Several people were also wounded in the attack on the market in the Halak neighbourhood of northeastern Aleppo, the Britain-based monitoring group said.It also reported at least 21 people killed in clashes between the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other rebel groups including the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusra Front in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor.Rebel-held areas of Aleppo have come under massive air assault since mid-December as government forces try to regain full control of Syria's second city and one-time commercial hub.A Syrian fighter jet fired a missile at the (Halak) neighbourhood, and within minutes it fired another, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.The Aleppo Media Centre run by local activists said that two residential buildings were destroyed and several shops set ablaze.Activists posted a YouTube video showing an ambulance trying to make its way across rubble to the site and the facades of buildings badly damaged.Youths are seen carrying the body of a man in a rug as others dig through rubble for victims.A man is heard crying Allahu akbar (God is the greatest) as he picks up body parts and wraps them in clothing. The authenticity of the video could not be immediately verified.Thursday's air raids come a day after the Observatory reported that twin air strikes on a school in the Ansari neighbourhood controlled by insurgents killed 18 people, 10 of them children.Aleppo-based citizen journalist Mohammed al-Khatib told AFP by Skype that the children were holding a drawing exhibition when two air strikes, 10 minutes apart, struck the school. The Observatory, which relies on activists and medics on the ground for its reports on the three-year war in Syria, said at least one teacher was also among the dead in Wednesday's strikes.Rebel bombardments of regime-held areas of Aleppo have also intensified in past weeks. On Sunday, rebels fired mortar rounds into parts of the Old City where government forces are entrenched and into other areas of Aleppo, killing more than 20 people. The rebels have been trying to advance into the Old City.Regime forces have also stepped up the use of barrel bombs dropped by helicopter on rebel positions, according to the Observatory. In eastern Syria, ISIL forces launched an offensive aiming to retake areas of Deir Ezzor province near the border with Iraq that they lost in February to groups including Al-Nusra front.Abdel Rahman said at least 21 people were killed in Thursday's fighting.ISIL already controls large swathes of the neighbouring province of Raqa.In early January, many rebel groups angered by abuses attributed to ISIL and by its desire for dominance attacked the jihadists in rebel-held areas of northern Syria.Since then, the Observatory estimates that the inter-rebel fighting has caused thousands of deaths.

Bomb attack in Nigeria capital kills at least 16

ABUJA (AFP) - A bombing at a bus station on the outskirts of Nigeria's capital killed at least 16 people on Thursday, just weeks after a deadly attack hit the same spot.No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack, but suspicion immediately fell on Boko Haram, the extremist Islamist group which has killed thousands in a five-year insurgency. The explosion rocked the crowded Nyanya bus terminal just a few kilometres from central Abuja at roughly 8:00 pm (1900 GMT) and emergency workers were at the scene trying to rescue the injured, said Manzo Ezekiel, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).He told AFP that the work was complicated by darkness at the station, which is very poorly lit after sundown.A bombing on April 14 that targeted morning commuters at the Nyanya terminal killed 75 people, making it the deadliest attack ever in Abuja.Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekau, declared a global terrorist by the United States, said his group carried out the April 14 bombing in a video message obtained by AFP. NEMA's central region coordinator Ishaya Chonoko, who was at the scene, told AFP the explosion was caused by a bomb blast, but declined to provide casualty figures. An AFP reporter at the nearby Asokoro General Hospital counted nine dead bodies which had been brought from Nyanya and a witness at the same hospital who requested anonymity said he had seen at least seven other corpses arrive. Much of Boko Haram's recent violence has targeted the remote northeast, the group's historic stronghold, where more than 1,500 people have been killed already this year. A second attack in two weeks just a few kilometres from the seat of government highlighted the serious threat the Islamists pose to Africa's most populous country and largest economy. President Goodluck Jonathan has faced intense pressure over the unrest, which has continued unchecked despite a massive year-long military offensive in the northeast aimed at crushing Boko Haram's uprising. The Nyanya station was completely inaccessible after Thursday's blast, with the one access road blocked and cars backed up for several kilometres, an AFP reporter said. Ezekiel, who said he lives near Nyanya and heard the bomb go off, described the road leading to the station as jam packed, adding that ambulances and rescue workers were struggling to reach the area. The bombing came amid mounting public outrage after one of Boko Haram's most shocking attacks, the mass kidnapping of more than 100 girls from their school in the northeast.Officials and locals have offered contradictory figures for the number of girls taken, but the school's principal has said that 187 are still being held hostage.Boko Haram, which says it wants to create a strict Islamic state in Nigeria's mainly Muslim north, has attacked schools, churches, mosques and various symbols of authority in an insurgency that has killed thousands since 2009.

Kerry urges 'pause' in Middle East peace talks

Posted:

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry reiterated Thursday it was time for the United States to take a pause in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, after months of efforts stalled last month. We believe the best thing to do right now is pause, take a hard look at these things, and find out what is possible and what is not possible in the days ahead, Kerry told reporters in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.President US Barack Obama on Friday also said there was a need to take a pause in talks, noting the inability of the US administration to bridge the gap between the two sides on key issues.Kerry has led an exhausting Middle East peace drive, and he stressed that the last eight months plus were not without significant progress in certain areas. But he added it was also time to be reflective about the ways in which one might be able to find a common ground even out of these difficulties.

Yemen says 13 Qaeda militants killed in army offensive

Posted:

ADEN (AFP) - Yemeni troops backed by aircraft on Thursday killed 13 suspected Al-Qaeda militants, including a local leader, as they pressed an offensive in southern and central Yemen, the defence ministry said.At least 10 people, including six militants, died in an ambush by Al-Qaeda suspects on an army convoy in the central province of Baida, the ministry said, updating an earlier toll.Three soldiers and a tribal chief, Sheikh Abdallah Salem al-Abdelli, were among those killed in a gun battle, it said. The ambush targeted Baida governor Aldhaher al-Shadadi and an army regional commander, General Ali Mohsen Muthanna, both of whom escaped unscathed, a military source told AFP.In the south, warplanes backed land forces in raids on Al-Qaeda positions in Raida, in Shabwa province, the defence ministrys news website 26sep.net said.Three vehicles were destroyed and six suspected militants travelling in them killed, it said. The raids came as the army pressed on with an assault since Wednesday night against Al-Qaeda in the Shabwa province towns of Maifaa and Azzan. In neighbouring Abyan province, troops killed a local leader of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), state news agency Saba reported, identifying him as Abu Muslim al-Uzbeki.The jihadist was probably killed in clashes that erupted when army forces advanced into Al-Mahfad, an army officer told AFP, referring to an Al-Qaeda stronghold in Abyan.A security official said Uzbeki travelled in 2011 from Uzbekistan to Yemen, where he was named an AQAP leader in Abyan. The army launched a major offensive on Tuesday aimed at clearing the jihadists from their remaining strongholds in villages and smaller towns in Shabwa and Abyan. The operation began with a setback for the army when Al-Qaeda ambushed a convoy, killing 15 soldiers and taking 15 more prisoner, three of whom were later executed.A total of 28 suspected militants, 24 soldiers and a civilian have now been reported killed in the armys offensive, which followed intense US and Yemeni air strikes last week.AQAP -- a merger of the networks Yemeni and Saudi branches -- is regarded by Washington as its most dangerous franchise and has been subjected to an intensifying drone war this year. The jihadists took advantage of a 2011 uprising that forced veteran strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh from power to seize large swathes of southern and eastern Yemen. The army recaptured several major towns in 2012 but has struggled to reassert control in rural areas, despite backing from militia recruited among the local tribes.

Football: Benfica, Sevilla into Europa League final

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Benfica and Sevilla reached the Europa League final Thursday, further cementing an Iberian grip on the sport on the continent. In a week which had already seen Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid set-up a Champions League title showdown, Europe's second-tier tournament followed a similar script.Benfica, runners-up to Chelsea in last year's final, weathered a Juventus onslaught in Turin to hold out for a 0-0 draw and a 2-1 semi-final aggregate win. They ensured the stalemate despite having Enzo Perez sent off for a second bookable offence with 23 minutes to play. The Portuguese side restricted the Italians to only a handful of serious opportunities as Juventus failed to score at home for the first time in 25 matches this season. The loss also denied Juventus, who are heading for the Serie A title this season, the opportunity to play the May 14 final on their home ground.Juventus coach Antonio Conte insisted his side had been the more positive. They had two shots on goal over the two legs and now they're into the final. In the end, the least deserving team have gone to the final, he said.We gave it everything we could but it wasn't enough. Now we have to turn our attention to winning the title, which we can do on Monday against Atalanta.Benfica coach Jorge Jesus said: We came under a lot of pressure against a strong side featuring the likes of Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente and Arturo Vidal. But tonight we showed how we can defend.Cameroon international Stephane Mbia headed home in the fifth minute of stoppage time to take Sevilla into the final on away goals despite losing 3-1 on the night away to Valencia. An early strike from Sofiane Feghouli and Beto's own goal had wiped out Sevilla's 2-0 first leg advantage inside 25 minutes.Jeremy Mathieu's goal midway through the second-half then seemed to have Valencia on route to the final, but Mbia, on-loan from Queens Park Rangers, powered home Federico Fazio's flick-on from a long throw to deny Los Che with the last attack of the game.I think it is the happiest moment of my life, said Mbia, who also scored in the first leg. It is unbelievable. I don't have the words to describe it.Inspired by overcoming a 3-0 first leg defeat to beat Basel 5-0 at home in the return in the quarter-finals, Valencia went ahead on 14 minutes when Feghouli cut inside onto his left foot and his shot deflected off Fazio and flew into the roof of the net.The Algerian international came close again when he was denied by a fine low save by Beto. However, the Portuguese goalkeeper was unfortunate moments later when the ball rebounded in off his back after he had made a fine save to turn Jonas Goncalves' header onto the bar.The hosts looked to have sealed their place in the final 21 minutes from time when Mathieu thrashed home after the ball fell perfectly for the French defender from Fede's corner. However, Mbia's dramatic intervention means it will instead be two-time winners Sevilla who will face Benfica in the final in Turin on May 14.

Tennis: Berdych, Raonic into Portugal last-eight

Posted:

OEIRAS (AFP) - Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic both posted 6-3, 6-2 scorelines to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP-WTA Portugal Open on Thursday.Top seed Berdych won in 75 minutes over Indian Somdev Devverman while Raonic took eight minutes fewer as the Canadian second seed stepped up his claycourt game ahead of the French Open to beat Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas.Berdych finished with six aces and three breaks of serve as the world number seven played for the first time since a third-round Monte Carlo loss last month. The Czech will face Argentina's Leonardo Mayer for a place in the semi-finals. Berdych is playing as a wild card, and said that the chance to get matches on clay is welcome after his early Monte Carlo exit. When I got the last-minute call, it was a great opportunity to come play some more matches and get back into the clay rhythm. I want to be ready for the big events which are coming, said Berdych. It was a solid start but we are still in the early stages of the tournament, This was just my first step and I need to keep going. I want to focus on hitting the ball as cleanly as possible. In front of a sold-out May 1 holiday crowd, Raonic managed what compatriot Eugenie Bouchard could not as the second seed lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova in a quarter-final in the women's draw 6-4, 6-1.Raonic, a career-best ninth, managed just six aces; his opponent, ranked 161, never earned a break point. The winner lost just 11 points on serve, five of those from double-faults. Raonic next plays Carlos Berlocq of Argentina.I'm happy with this result and with the level I was able to produce, said Raonic. This was my first match here and they can be tricky. It can sometimes be difficult to find early momentum. But overall I look back and I'm happy with how it has gone so far. My main goal this season is to do better on clay than I have in the past. Portugal's Gastao Elias duplicated his 2013 quarter-final with an upset of Spanish fourth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.The number 179 will Friday line up against Victor Hanescu after the Romanian beat Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.In the women's draw, double Grand Slam title winner and seventh seed Kuznetsova reached only her third WTA semi-final in as many seasons with a 6-4, 6-1 upset of Bouchard. The Russian won 11 of the last 12 games.Kuznetsova, ranked 29th, last played a semi last year in Moscow, losing to Samantha Stosur. Before that, her previous appearance in a final four came in January, 2012, at Auckland. The Russian played a quarter-final here a year ago after last competing in Portugal in 2002.It's nice to be back in the semis, said the 2009 French Open winner and 2004 US Open champion. My clay season is certainly starting better than my hardcourt.Kuznetsova came to Portugal after reaching the quarter-finals last week in Stuttgart and had trained briefly with Bouchard earlier in the week.I had seen her play some matches but the training gave me a chance to see her game -- and the same for her, said the 28-year-old. It helped me figure out how to play her.Kuznetsova got off to a poor start, trailing 4-1 in the opening set before closing the gap with breaks in the seventh and ninth games against her 20-year-old opponent, an Australian Open semi-finalist in January.Kuznetsova won the slow-moving set in 43 minutes, then opened the throttle to run away to victory in another half-hour.I was able to play my game and everything worked out well for me, said Kuznetsova, who now faces compatriot and eighth seed Elena Vesnina, who outlasted Italian fourth seed Roberta Vinci 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 7-5.

MUNICH (AFP) - Tommy Haas made light of his 36 years to open the defence of his Munich Open title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Colombia's Alejandro Falla on Thursday.Haas, the second seed and ranked 16 in the world, took his career dominance over the South American to 5-1 with a 74-minute win in his first match since a fourth-round exit to Roger Federer at Indian Wells in March. He had been sidelined in recent weeks with a right shoulder injury.I'm pretty happy with the win, obviously, having been laid off for a couple of weeks and not knowing how the injury would be, said the German veteran.I'm really happy with the way I played. It's always great to play in front of a full crowd at home in Germany. He's the kind of player you have to play great tennis against to beat him otherwise you beat yourself.Top seed Fabio Fognini of Italy also made the quarter-finals with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 win over German wild card Dustin Brown.

Football: Copa America coming to United States in 2016

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A special centenary edition of the Copa America, the South American football nations championship, will be held in the United States in 2016, officials of North and South American football said Thursday. The Copa America Centenario will run from June 3-26 in 2016 and will feature 10 nations from South America and six from North and Central America and the Caribbean, officials of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF said in Miami.A Copa America in North America had been rumored for months to be in the works, but for now officials say it's a one-off in honor of the 100th anniversary of the tournament first held in 1916.Normally held every four years, the tournament usually features 10 South American teams and two guest teams from other regions. Chile hosts the next edition in 2015.Uruguay's 15 tournament titles are the record, set with their victory in 2011.Argentina have won it 14 times, but haven't triumphed since 1993 while Brazil's eight titles include four of the last six.The six teams from CONCACAF to compete in the tournament will be the United States, Mexico, the champion of the 2014 Caribbean Cup, the champion of the 2014 Copa Centroamericana (also to be held in the United States) and two teams determined by a playoff among the top four non-qualified teams at the 2015 Gold Cup.

Snooker: O'Sullivan stays on course for another world title

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ronnie O'Sullivan maintained his charge towards a third successive World Championship title as he established a 6-2 lead over Barry Hawkins in the first session of their semi-final on Thursday.O'Sullivan has been in fine form during his pursuit of a sixth world crown of his career since coming from behind to defeat Joe Perry in the second round at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre.O'Sullivan swept past Shaun Murphy, himself a former world champion, in the quarter-finals with a session to spare and, in a repeat of last year's final, wasted little time in establishing a four-frame lead in the best of 33 contest. He took the first of the semi-final with a break of 63 before Hawkins levelled with a contribution of 96 and briefly went ahead with a break of 76.But it was one-way traffic from then on, Hawkins's mistakes and O'Sullivan's skill seeing the champion, who made a break of 108 in the seventh frame before a missed red from his opponent let him take the next, pull ahead. The second semi-final is an Anglo-Australian clash between Mark Selby and Melbourne-born Neil Robertson, the 2010 world champion, who in his quarter-final win over Judd Trump became the first player to make 100 competitive century breaks in a tour season.

Oil prices lower amid supply gains

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices slipped Thursday helped by more abundant supplies thanks to high US production and the boost to exports in Libya. In New York, West Texas Intermediate crude for June delivery gave up 32 cents at $99.42 a barrel, the lowest level since the end of March. In London, the Brent North Sea benchmark for June fell 31 cents to $107.76 from Wednesday's close.Bart Melek of TD Securities said the continued rise of US stockpiles, especially in the refining hub on the Gulf Of Mexico, was pressing prices lower. On Wednesday the US Department of Energy's weekly estimate of crude oil stocks gained 1.7 million barrels to a record 339.4 million barrels. The market recognizes that physical oil supplies remain abundant, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures. The US market is certainly well-stocked, with April 25 crude oil inventories reaching a fresh 83-year high. Last week's builds in US product inventories add some weight to the overall bearish shift.Downward pressure on prices was also coming from the expected resumption of oil exports from a key terminal in Libya, the Zueitina port that has been shut down by protests for months.

Euro-dollar flat ahead of US April jobs report

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Foreign exchange markets were quiet Thursday ahead of the US April jobs report release, which could confirm that the economy is emerging from its winter chill. The euro-dollar rate was virtually unchanged at $1.3867, while the yen slipped a day after the Bank of Japan trimmed its economic growth outlook.Analysts were on the watch for Friday's US jobs data, amid tentative expectations that it will show the economy is rebounding after a near-stall in the first quarter. The US non-farm payrolls report may spark a bullish reaction in the dollar as the economy is expected to add another 215,000 jobs in April, said David Song, adding he expects the unemployment rate to fall to 6.6 percent from 6.7 percent.Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Western Union, meanwhile said the initial release could spark a bout of renewed volatility.Although the euro's drift higher has been a boon for US exporters, he said, they face a risk in Friday's jobs report, should it prove stronger than expected and spark a rebound in the dollar.

Latif backs Malik in bid to lift life ban

Posted:

KARACHI (AFP) - Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif Thursday backed former team-mate Salim Malik in his bid to overturn a life ban imposed 14 years ago for match-fixing.Latif, known for his fight against corruption in cricket, said Malik had already suffered enough and should be allowed to coach or do similar work.I think Malik should be given relief now, Latif told AFP. He is not playing or coaching cricket and has served 14 years of his ban.Latif was the first to blow the whistle on match-fixing on Pakistan's tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1995, accusing Malik and other team-mates of wrongdoing.Shane Warne, Tim May and Mark Waugh revealed the same year that Malik had offered them bribes to under-perform in matches on Australia's tour to Pakistan in 1994.The allegations prompted the then-Pakistan government to conduct a judicial inquiry in 1998 through Lahore high court judge Malik Mohammad Qayyum who after a two-years investigation banned Malik and paceman Ataur Rehman for life. The commission also fined six leading players: Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saeed Anwar, Mushtaq Ahmed, Inzamam-ul Haq and Akram Raza.Rehman had his ban overturned by a one-man Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) commission in 2003.Malik's ban was also overturned by a civil court in Lahore in 2008 but the decision has not been endorsed by either the PCB or the International Cricket Council (ICC).On Wednesday Malik contacted PCB chairman Najam Sethi, seeking a review on his ban. The PCB has promised to review the ban but has not assured anything.Latif said the PCB and ICC never endorsed the Qayyum commission report.ICC and PCB never endorsed the Justice Qayyum inquiry in totality and that's why Rehman got relief, said Latif, who played 37 Tests and 166 one-day internationals for Pakistan. If other players (fined by the Qayyum commission) can do cricket-related jobs in private leagues and with cricket boards, Malik also deserves the same, said Latif, without naming anyone. His former team-mate Mushtaq served as spin coach for England between 2010 to 2014 and is also tipped to take a role in the Pakistan cricket team's management despite a ban by the commission on him taking any role in the board or team.

Few surprises in first England squad of second Moores era

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Englands first squad since Peter Moores was re-appointed as head coach saw a new-look selection panel opt for several familiar faces when they unveiled a 13-man party Thursday for next weeks one-day international away to Scotland.Nottinghamshire left-arm seamer Harry Gurney was the only uncapped player selected for the match in Aberdeen on May 9, although he did tour the West Indies with England earlier this year.Meanwhile two relative international novices in batsmen Moeen Ali and Gary Ballance retained their places in a squad again captained by opener Alastair Cook. This was the first squad chosen by the new England selection panel headed up by former Test batsman James Whitaker that also includes Moores, Middlesex coach Angus Fraser and Nottinghamshire boss Mick Newell. However, that didnt do a number of players at both counties any favour with Middlesex fast bowler Steven Finn, back in the wickets in County Championship cricket after a wretched tour of Australia, left out of this squad. So too were Nottinghamshire batsmen Alex Hales and Michael Lumb, even though the former made Englands first Twenty20 hundred during the recent World Twenty20 in Bangladesh and the latter a hundred on his ODI debut in February.Their county colleague Gurney was one of just three specialist seamers included alongside veteran paceman James Anderson, called up for one-day duty for the first time since the 2013 season in England, and Sussexs Chris Jordan.Stuart Broad continues to be sidelined with a knee injury while Tim Bresnan has yet to play first-team cricket for Yorkshire this season.All-rounder Ben Stokes is still out with the broken wrist he suffered punching a dressing-room locker in the Caribbean and his absence has paved the way for a recall of Chris Woakes. The batting had a more settled look with Cook supported by several seasoned internationals in Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara and Joe Root, who showed hed recovered from a thumb injury playing for Yorkshire against Middlesex this week.Lancashires Jos Buttler retained his place as England one-day international wicketkeeper with Kents James Tredwell holding on to the first choice off-spinner role that has been his since Graeme Swanns retirement. The start of the international summer is always incredibly exciting for everyone involved in England cricket and it has been pleasing to see so many players in good form early on this season, said Whitaker in an England and Wales Cricket Board statement. On behalf of the selectors I would like to wish new coach Peter Moores, Alastair Cook and the whole squad all the best for a good performance against Scotland in what we know will be a very competitive fixture.Scotland have qualified for next years World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand, where they have been drawn in the same pool as England. And if England needed any more reason to take their minnow opponents seriously, they need only recall their last international match -- a humiliating 54-run loss to the Netherlands, like the Scots a non-Test nation, at the World Twenty20 in Chittagong in March.Englands squad for the Scotland match will meet at the national training base at Loughborough University in the English Midlands for two days training before heading to Scotland.None of the 13-man party will not be available for the round of County Championship fixtures starting on May 4.Squad: Alastair Cook (Essex, capt), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Gary Ballance (Yorkshire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Jos Buttler (Lancashire, wkt), Harry Gurney (Nottinghamshire), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Eoin Morgan (Middlesex), Joe Root (Yorkshire), James Tredwell (Kent), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).
