Tennis: Serena crashes as Djokovic, Federer cruise at French Open

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Defending champion and world number one Serena Williams was knocked out of the French Open by Spain's Garbine Muguruza on Wednesday as the American star stumbled to her second worst Grand Slam defeat. The top seed lost 6-2, 6-2 in the second round to the world number 35 with her defeat coming just an hour after sister Venus also went out, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Slovak teenager Anna Schmiedlova. It was the earliest exit for a defending champion at Roland Garros since 2005 when Anastasia Myskina of Russia went out in the first round. With Li Na losing in the first round on Tuesday, Serena's defeat marks the first time in the Open Era that the top two seeds had failed to get to the third round at a major.Wednesday's defeat was Serena's worst at a Grand Slam in terms of games won and was only the second time she had been beaten at a major in the round of 64.The last time that happened was on her debut at the 1998 Australian Open.Nothing worked today, said 17-time major winner Serena who hit just eight winners and a huge 29 unforced errors with five double faults.I just couldn't serve. But you can't be on form every day. I hate to be off at a Grand Slam but it happens, it's not the end of the world.I will have to work five times as hard to make sure it doesn't happen again, added the 32-year-old who suffered her only Grand Slam first round loss in Paris in 2012.The 20-year-old Muguruza was over-joyed by her performance.Today's a great day, she said. I really didn't expect that but I'm really happy. I had to be aggressive and I did it well.Serena's defeat was good news for Maria Sharapova who is now the overwhelming title favourite. The Williams sisters had been scheduled to meet in the third round but their back-to-back exits represented just the fourth time they had lost on the same day at a major.Instead the tournament will get Muguruza against Schmiedlova, the 19-year-old Slovak who ended 32-year-old Venus's 17th French Open with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.Schmiedlova was just a month old when the American made her professional debut back in 1994.It's the biggest win of my career, said world number 56 Schmiedlova who had lost to Venus in straight sets in Miami this season.I have big respect for her. She's a great player and I still cannot believe I won.Defeat for Venus, the 29th seed, meant she has now failed to get beyond the second round in Paris on her last three visits. She was undone by 47 unforced errors on a half-full Philippe Chatrier court and despite saving two match points it was all too much for mother Oracene who was caught on TV napping as Venus slipped to defeat.I think she's very good already, and she's going to be even better as she continues to play. I see wonderful things for her, said Venus of her opponent.Second seed Novak Djokovic, the 2012 runner-up who needs a French Open title to complete a career Grand Slam, restored order to the tournament with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over Jeremy Chardy of France to reach the last 32.Djokovic took his record over the world number 42 to 9-0.I knew he's gonna come out trying to take his chances with the forehand, and he has a big serve, said Djokovic. But I managed to make him play an extra shot. I managed to stay solid from the baseline, and I think that forced him to make a lot of unforced errors, which definitely helped me to win in straight sets.Roger Federer, the 2009 champion and fourth seed, also reached the third round with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Argentine qualifier Diego Sebastian Schwartzman. It was Federer's 60th win at Roland Garros as he goes on to face Russian 31st seed Dmitry Tursunov for a place in the last 16.Also progressing were Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych who beat Alexsandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 and Milos Raonic, the eighth-seeded Canadian who defeated Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-1.

Tennis: Sharapova sticking to own path after more upsets

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Maria Sharapova found a way to win ugly on Wednesday as she overcame difficult conditions to battle past Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova 7-5, 6-2 to reach the French Open third round.Following the shock exit of defending champion Serena Williams and China's second seed Li Na's elimination 24 hours earlier, the Russian star, 27, is the leading favourite to take the 2014 title. However the Russian four-time Grand Slam winner, who won Roland Garros in 2012, said cold, blustery conditions were difficult and a reason for her 27 unforced errors.I think it's always a challenge to go into a match knowing that it's going to be cold and might be a bit windy. So you have to mentally be prepared for that, said Sharapova, who burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old when she won Wimbledon in 2004.Once I got the break back in the first set, I started feeling a bit more aggressive and much better about my game, and I was able to hold that until the end of the match. When asked about the upsets in the women's draw and an easier route to the final without Williams or Li Na she replied: I think you always have to follow your path and always concentrate on your work and who's ahead of you and not get worried about what's going on. Obviously when you go on court you're aware of a lot of the upsets, not just in the women but in the men, as well.Sharapova, who has now won all five meetings against Pironkova, trailed 4-2 in the opening set before reeling off three straight games to take the lead for the first time at 5-4. An 80 per cent first serve winning percentage helped edge the set and appeared to break the spirit of the Bulgarian. At 2-2 in the second set, Sharapova again went on a roll, reeling off the next four games to wrap up the match in 1hr 32min. She improved her record on clay this year to 14 and 1, after wins in Stuttgart and Madrid left her with 31 titles on the WTA circuit. The world number eight now faces Romania's Monica Niculescu or Paula Ormaechea of Argentina for a place in the last 16. Their match was suspended with Niculescu leading 6-2, 2-0 when bad light stopped play.

Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer dead at 85

Posted:

TAMPA (AFP) - Malcolm Glazer, the controversial American owner of English Premier League giants Manchester United, died Wednesday. He was 85.Glazer gained a global profile through his ownership of United, one of the biggest and best supported football clubs in the world. But he was deeply unpopular with hardcore United fans after loading the club with hundreds of millions of dollars in debt following a 2005 buyout. His death was announced on the website of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers American football team, one of his other sports franchises. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are saddened to announce the passing of Owner/President Malcolm Glazer earlier this morning at the age of 85, the statement said.A dynamic business leader, Glazer helped mold the Buccaneers into a model franchise and one respected league-wide.Under Glazers stewardship of the Buccaneers, the NFL team enjoyed its first Super Bowl success in 2002.Shares of Manchester United slipped sharply after Glazers death was announced on the New York Stock Exchange late Wednesday.Glazers death is not expected to have any bearing on the ownership of the club, with his family retaining a 90 percent holding in United. His sons Joel and Avram Glazer continue to serve as co-chairmen of the club. Another son, Bryan, remains on the United board. The thoughts of everyone at Manchester United are with his family tonight, the Premier League club said Wednesday.Glazers 2005 takeover of United in a leveraged $1.2 billion buyout triggered widespread protests amongst the clubs fans.Although Glazers reign coincided with a glut of silverware -- including five Premier League crowns and the 2008 Champions League title -- he remained a hate figure for many supporters.Fans have complained that Glazers ownership model has forced United to spend millions of pounds servicing the clubs debt -- money which could have been spent in strengthening Uniteds playing staff.Nevertheless, Glazer found a consistent and vocal ally in Manchester Uniteds legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who insisted the American had been great for the club.I am comfortable with the Glazer situation. They have been great, Ferguson said in 2012, a year before he announced his retirement. They have always backed me whenever I have asked them. I have never faced any opposition.

Cycling: Pirazzi sprints to stage, Quintana still in pink

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - Italian Stefano Pirazzi (Bardiani-CSF) held off a small group of chasers in the home straight to claim his maiden Giro d'Italia victory from the race's 17th stage on Wednesday.Race leader Nairo Quintana (Movistar) crossed the finish line with the main peloton and his closest rivals nearly 15 minutes later following a 208km trek from Sarnonico to Vittorio Veneto that saw a breakaway go unchallenged all the way to the finish.Quintana, the runner-up on last year's Tour de France, spent his first day in the race's fabled 'maglia rosa' (pink jersey) to retain his 1min 41sec lead on Rigoberto Uran (Omega-Pharma) and 3:21 cushion on Australian Cadel Evans (BMC).But it was a tense day in the saddle for the 24-year-old Colombian, who was accused of foul play following his victory on stage 16 when he took the jersey from Uran, last year's runner-up.Uran's Omega-Pharma team were on Tuesday one of several to accuse organisers, and Quintana, of foul play following an official radio announcement during the rain-plagued 16th stage that suggested the descent of the treacherous Stelvio climb would be 'neutralised' -- effectively not raced -- because of the dangers posed by cold and wet conditions.Organisers later claimed they had simply announced that a motorbike rider, with a pillion passenger waving a red flag, would be placed at the front of the race to warn of any dangers on the road ahead. As some teams and riders heeded the organisers' 'advice', others, like Quintana, forged on ahead regardless. Quintana claimed the win, the pink jersey and put himself in contention for a first Grand Tour triumph four days before the finish. The results should have been cancelled, said the owner of Tinkoff, Oleg Tinkoff, whose team leader Rafal Majka dropped to 3:28 behind Quintana on Tuesday. Two meetings between several unhappy cycling teams were held, while the International Cycling Union (UCI) attempted to defuse the situation by tweeting that the organisers had taken the initiative by putting motorbike riders ahead of the peloton and that security remains the main concern of all race organisers and the UCI.With moods tense, there was little reaction from the main bunch when an early breakaway formed and went on to build a healthy lead that stood at 12 minutes with a little over 50km remaining. After a series of attacks and counter-attacks in the closing kilometres, Pirazzi broke free in the final 1.3km and just thwarted a small chasing group from ending his bid metres before the line. His first Giro win was celebrated by a defiant gesture at the finish, after which Pirazzi explained: It's my response to all my critics. It was also Bardiani-CSF's third win inside a week, following successes by Marco Canola and Enrico Battaglin on the 13th and 14th stages. On Thursday the race moves back into the mountains on the 18th stage from Belluno to Panarotta Refuge. Two mountain passes, the San Pellegrino and the Redebus, will be crossed before the peloton tackle the 16.8km rise to the finish.

Oil prices drop on expected rise in US inventories

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell Wednesday on the eve of US stockpiles data, with most traders forecasting a rise in supplies in the world's largest consumer of crude oil. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate for delivery in July, dropped $1.39 to close at $102.72 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent North Sea crude for July settled at $109.81 a barrel, down 22 cents from Tuesday's close, in London. The New York market saw profit-taking ahead of the Department of Energy's weekly inventories report due Thursday, said Gene McGillian of Tradition Energy. The DoE report normally is released on Wednesdays but was delayed because of a holiday on Monday. In last week's report, US crude stockpiles unexpectedly fell by 7.2 million barrels, signaling to traders improved demand. But this time traders are expecting a small build of one million barrels after the sharp decline that was viewed as probably a one-week thing, McGillian said.Except for the surprise decline last week, crude inventories have climbed almost non-stop since the beginning of the year as the country's oil production ramps up.At the end of April the inventories hit 399.4 million barrels, the highest level since 1931.

Dollar pushes higher on euro

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Foreign exchange traders pushed the US dollar to a 15-week high against the euro Wednesday, sending US bond yields down to their lowest in nearly one year. With markets convinced that the European Central Bank will take more steps to shore up the eurozone economy on June 5, buyers sought out the dollar, sending the euro down to $1.3590.Yields on the 10-year US Treasury note sank to 2.44 percent, a level last seen in June 2013, down from the 12-month peak of 3.0 percent.Omer Esiner of Commonwealth Foreign Exchange said that while firm US economic data has supported the greenback, much of the dollar's improved tone remains the result of disappointing economic news abroad and the resulting sell-off in currencies like the euro and the British pound. The pound, which tested the $1.69 level just last week, fell to $1.6710 in trade Wednesday. The pound suffered in the wake of disappointing data that suggested the nation's red-hot housing market and engine of broader economic recovery may have peaked, said Esiner.

Jordan strikes as England thrash Sri Lanka

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Chris Jordan led England's attack as they bowled out Sri Lanka for just 67 on the way to completing a crushing 10-wicket win in the third one-day international at Old Trafford on Wednesday. The Sussex paceman took a career-best five wickets for 29 runs as England, after fit-again captain Alastair Cook won the toss in overcast conditions, dismissed Sri Lanka in just 24 overs.Cook (30 not out) and Ian Bell (41 not out), then made easy work of their meagre target, although left-hander Cook was dropped on 12 at square leg by Sachitra Senanayake.Bell finished the day/night match with a straight six off left-arm spinner Rangana Herath as England, now 2-1 up in this five-match series, hit back just three days after being bowled out for 99 during Sri Lanka's 157-run win at Chester-le-Street. The lads came out firing, desperate to prove a point today, and we did that, Cook told Sky Sports. When we got the chance Jords really hit the mark, explained the left-handed opener, who missed the second ODI with a groin strain.Jordan added: It was really emphatic today and, after we lost at Durham, we wanted to fight back hard. We were surprised at how quickly we won but we're happy. Playing international cricket fires me up and it was nice to get one over on them today.Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews slammed his side's top order, saying: The poor shot selection was the main reason why we only got 67.However, he added: The English team is hard to beat on home soil but I've got the team to do it.Kumar Sangakkara top-scored for Sri Lanka with 13 in an innings where the only other batsmen to make it into double figures were Mahela Jayawardene (12) and Mathews (11).The tourists lost their last six wickets for nine runs in six overs.Sri Lanka's total was their third lowest at this level, following the 43 they made against South Africa at Paarl in 2012 and 55 against the West Indies at Sharjah in 1986.It was also their lowest in England, with their previous worst in the country also coming at Old Trafford when, as a non-Test nation, they made 86 against eventual champions the West Indies at the inaugural World Cup in 1975.Heavy cloud cover favoured England's attack but conditions alone could not explain how Sri Lanka were bowled out on Wednesday with a mammoth 26 overs remaining.James Anderson, on his Lancashire home ground, got England going with an opening burst of two wickets for no runs in five balls, with both Tillakaratne Dilshan and Lahiru Thirimanne caught behind by his county colleague Jos Buttler. Dilshan was undone by an especially good delivery which cut back into him, Buttler taking a well-judged catch.Sangakkara was caught behind off Jordan and the Sussex star then had Dinesh Chandimal taken at short extra-cover by Bell. But it was off-spinner James Tredwell who, with his first ball, took the prize wicket of Jayawardene when the right-hander was plumb lbw on the back foot. Mathews was then caught behind off Jordan, who in his 12th match at this level was well on the way to surpassing his previous best of three for 25 in England's series-opening 81-run win against Sri Lanka at The Oval last week. The exit of Mathews was the cue for a flurry of wickets, that included a direct hit run out by Ravi Bopara.Barbados-born Jordan, 25, appropriately wrapped up proceedings when he had last man Lasith Malinga lbw for two.The series continues at Lord's on Saturday before concluding at Edgbaston on June 3.
