Tennis: Nadal gets kind draw at French Open

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Rafael Nadal will open his quest for a ninth French Open crown with a tie against US veteran wildcard Robby Ginepri following Friday's draw which treated the Spaniard kindly. The 27-year-old has a 59-1 win record at Roland Garros since he first appeared in Paris in 2005, his only loss being to Robin Soderling of Sweden in a 2009 fourth round upset. But Nadal's uncustomary struggles on clay in the buildup to Roland Garros means that he is not the outstanding favourite he usually is, with world number two Novak Djokovic also fancied to win what would be his first French Open title.Still, the draw handed Nadal a relatively more straightforward passage through the rounds than Djokovic.Nadal is facing fourth-round and quarter-final matchups against fellow Spaniards Nicolas Almagro and David Ferrer, and although both me have beaten him in the buildup to Roland Garros, he has dominated them throughout his career.Past them, his likeliest semi-finals opponents would be either Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka or Britain's Andy Murray, who are slated to meet in the quarter-finals. Murray led Nadal 4-2 in the deciding set in the Rome quarter-finals last week but eventually lost 7-5Nadal, whose only tournament win on clay in the buildup came in Madrid where opponent Kei Nishikori of Japan had to pull out in the deciding set of the final, said that he had fully recovered from his efforts in Rome where he played a series of tough three-setters before losing in the final to Djokovic.During the claycourt season I get a little better week by week, he said.Last week in Rome it was tough physically. I played a lot of time, but in the end sometimes you need these things, No?I was happy with the way I finished in Madrid and Rome. Not that happy about what I did in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. Djokovic will start comfortably enough with a match against Portugal's Joao Sousa, but he could be faced with dangerous Croat Marin Cilic in the third round. If he comes through that, the Serb could face top home hope Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the last 16, and either fast-rising Milos Raonic of Canada, who ran him close last week in Rome, or Japanese star Nishikori in the quarter-finals before an eventual semi-final against Federer.Federer, whose one French Open title in Paris came in 2009, is a potential semi-final opponent if the Swiss fourth seed can get past Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the third quarter of the draw.Federer opens up against Lukas Lacko of Slovakia and could run early into the talented Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, but his path looks clear enough through to the last eight and a matchup with Berdych.Having played just once - and lost once - since his wife Mirka gave birth to the couple's second set of twins, he said that things were fairly normal.Clearly there is a bit more happening and there is a bit more you can do if you want to, but Mirka takes care of most of it.I am not sure if I have played less than in previous years on clay because sometimes I didn't play in Monaco. So I think it's about what I usually always have before the French Open. For me, I feel like I'm in good shape. I know where my game is at. I'm not worried that maybe there is not enough matches played, all of that.

Tennis: Williams sisters set for early clash in Paris

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Serena Williams is set for a third round clash with sister Venus following a French Open draw on Friday that left her in the tougher half of the tournament. The defending champion and top seed will open her 13th campaign at Roland Garros with a match against young French wildcard Alize Lim, while Venus, who has never won the title in Paris and went out in the first round last year, starts against Belinda Bencic of Switzerland. The prospect of once again playing her older sister at a Grand Slam event is not something Serena relishes. No, it never gets easier. She's essentially the love of my life, so it's definitely difficult, she said.If she makes it through to the last eight, the American's opponent could be seventh seed Maria Sharapova who she beat in last year's final. The Russian was the French Open champion the previous year and is seeded seventh this year.Potential semi-final opponents include third seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, who took Serena to three sets in the 2012 Wimbledon final or big-hitting German Angelique Kerber.Coming into Paris on the back of a runaway win in Rome, Williams said that her form in Italy last week had done her a power of good after a run of injuries and loss of form early in the season. It was important for me, because I didn't get to play as much clay as I did last year. I had to stop in Madrid early (injured), so I wasn't even sure if I was going to play Rome. Then to come out the win gave me a lot of confidence. I got a lot of matches in there and I needed those matches. I felt good after them. Also, I like being seeded number one. The favourite part is definitely more pressure. But as Billie Jean King tells me, pressure is a privilege.Sharapova, who won back-to-back claycourt titles in Stuttgart and Madrid as part of her preparations for Roland Garros, said that at 27 and with a pro career dating back 10 years, she was as ambitious as ever.I want to achieve more and I want to win more Grand Slams and I want to get back to number one, she said.I think when you have that feeling of being there before and holding those trophies, they are so memorable and you spend so many hours training to feel that excitement, to feel that energy, that adrenaline for those moments of match point victories. And that's why I play, because that's what I've known for my whole life. And my body still allows me to do that. I have done it since I was a very young girl. I love the thrill of it.The bottom half of the draw sees second seed and 2011 French Open champion Li Na of China get things underway with a tie against France's Kristina Mladenovic, the junior champion at Roland Garros in 2009.Li, the champion in Paris three years ago, is facing a quarter-final matchup against Serb veteran Jelena Jankovic, with Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and rising Romanian Simona Halep looming as potential rivals in the semi-finals.The Chinese icon, the same age as Serena Williams at 32, said that she would look to coach Carlos Rodriguez, a claycourt expert who guided Justine Henin to four titles in Paris, to put her gameplan together.I think he's pretty smart. He always try to change. I think doesn't matter how it change, she said.Right now I think he was working a lot for me making the dropshot, slice, I can come into the net.

Ronaldo fit for Champs League; Benzema, Pepe doubt

Posted:

LISBON (AP) - Cristiano Ronaldo seems certain to be fit to lead Real Madrid's attack against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday. However, Real coach Carlo Ancelotti has lingering fitness doubts about Ronaldo's strike partner Karim Benzema and defender Pepe.Cristiano doesn't have any problems, he has trained well, Ancelotti said Friday about the competition's 16-goal record scorer, who missed Madrid's final league match last weekend to rest a leg muscle injury.Benzema and Pepe have not trained this week due to hamstring and calf injuries, respectively.Ancelotti said the team's practice session Friday evening on the Stadium of Light pitch will be crucial to decide if they can start.Madrid's vaunted forward line the so-called BBC of Gareth Bale, Benzema and Cristiano have combined to score 26 goals in this Champions League season, plus 63 in La Liga.Benzema has thrived playing between the two speedy wingers, though Ancelotti played down the significance of the France forward, or any one player in a city derby between teams which have met four times already this season.Benzema has had a great season and I don't know that we are losing him, the coach said, adding we will use another player who has similar characteristics. This is not going to be a match where individuals count so much as the two teams, Ancelotti said.Atletico has injury concerns about its own star forward, Brazilian-born Spain international Diego Costa, who had a horse placenta treatment on his right thigh this week.Real defender Sergio Ramos said he hoped all the best players lined up Saturday. If Diego Costa is there or (Arda) Turan or any other, well, that's no problem as far as I am concerned, the Spain defender said. What concerns me is Karim, Pepe, Cris who have been injured in these past few days. For Real, attacking midfielder Isco could be asked to replace Benzema, whose France teammate Raphael Varane is a likely deputy for Pepe.Ancelotti is deprived of holding midfielder Xabi Alonso who is suspended, and Germany's Sami Khedira could start just two weeks after returning from a six-month absence due to a knee injury.

Golf: Bjorn, Lowry, lead pack at Wentworth

Posted:

WENTWORTH (AFP) - Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and Shane Lowry of Ireland shared the lead in the European PGA Championship here at Wentworth at the end of the second round on Friday.Bjorn finished the day with a level par 72, ten shots higher than his opening course record whilst Lowry, the 2012 Portugal Masters winner, shot a 70 with birdies at the last two holes. The pair are four shots clear of Luke Donald and Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello who were six-under after 36 holes with the Englishman finishing with a flourish by holing from 24-feet for birdie on the last and a round of 67.Cabrera-Bello was one-over for the day, shedding shots at the 15th and 17th, but stayed in the hunt when he too birdied the 18th.There are a clutch of big names on the leaderboard with Henrik Stenson and Rory McIlory also making progress on day two.McIlroy, Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti and Swedish pair Jonas Blixt and Stenson were all on 139 - five-under par - and Stenson could become world number one this weekend depending on how Adam Scott fares in America.Bjorn was never going to match Friday's 62 with tougher pin positions and rain falling when he started his round and he was two-over at the turn.Birdies at the 12th, 15th and 18th however put him in the hunt for his 16th win on the European Tour.Bjorn said: I have got the experience and I know what it takes to win golf tournaments - but I also know that it can quickly disappear over 36 holes.A lot of things can change in this tournament from here on in but as long as I stay focussed on my game we'll see where I am on Sunday. For a European Tour player this is the biggest event we play outside of majors and World Golf Championships. That says it all.Donald's round, on a happy hunting ground for him, included nine single putts and got him right back in contention for the European Tour's biggest event which he won in 2011 and 2012.Donald said: Being nine behind after the first round it seems like you have got a mountain to climb but now I am only four back and in a position to win this championship again.McIlroy has been the centre of attention at the European Tour's flagship event after announcing the break-up of his relationship with tennis player Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday. He has a poor record on this course - he has missed the last two cuts here - but looked to have buried his demons with his first round until the course hit back on Friday before his final flourish. And McIlroy has managed to keep the off-field distractions in check as he bids for a first win in the European Tour's flagship event where he missed the cut in the last two years. McIlroy said: Three over par after seven holes was not great but it was not disastrous and I knew I would have chances on the back nine. There are still 36 holes to go and I feel like I am playing well enough to shoot something in the 60s tomorrow. I am playing well enough to get myself in the mix.Once you get inside the ropes you can concentrate on the golf. It is four or five hours of release to get everything out of your head.Defending champion Matteo Manassero missed the cut after finishing seven-over.Other casualties included European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, Charl Schwartzel, Ernie Els and Darren Clarke whilst Retief Goosen withdrew after six holes on Friday with back trouble.

Cycling: Canola wins 13th stage, Uran retains Giro lead

RIVAROLO CANAVESE (AFP) - Italy's Marco Canola prevailed in a sprint finish to the Giro d'Italia 13th stage on Friday, with Colombian Rigoberto Uran retaining the overall leader's pink jersey.Canola, with the Bardiani team, celebrated his biggest success by fending off Venezuela's Jackson Rodriguez and French rider Angelo Tulik in a dash to the line at the end of the 157km run from Fossano to Rivarolo.I hope this is the first of many, said the rider from Venice.Canola, Rodriguez and Tulik were part of an early six-man breakaway, with an 11 second gap back to the peloton headed by another Frenchman Nacer Bouhanni, holder of the red points jersey, with Uran safely in their midst. The peloton had to battle a hail storm, making life difficult for the riders. With 10km to go the three who fought out the finish had a near one and a half minute cushion on the chasing pack, with Canola best negotiating the final bend to emerge triumphant for the best win of his career. The 25-year-old turned professional in 2012, the Venetian competing in his second Giro.On Saturday the 2014 Tour of Italy enters the mountains, ending up in Oropa where the late Italian climber Marco Pantani, who died in 2004, produced a memorable performance after being held up with a chain problem on his way to victory in the 1999 edition. The 164km run begins in Aglie with the notorious 11.8 climb to the finish in Oropa.

Oil rises on US demand hopes; Ukraine, Libya concerns

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices closed moderately higher Friday, lifted by signs of improved US crude demand and geopolitical concerns ahead of Ukraine's presidential election on Sunday. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in July, solidly topped $104 a barrel as traders prepared for the long US holiday weekend. There will be no floor trading and no settlement on the New York Mercantile Exchange in observance of Memorial Day on Monday. Normal trading resumes Tuesday.WTI finished the session at $104.35 a barrel, a gain of 61 cents from Thursday.Brent North Sea crude for July rose 18 cents to settle at $110.54 a barrel in London trade.Traders are betting on further declines in US crude inventories as refinery maintenance season ends in the coming two weeks, said Andy Lipow of Lipow Oil Associates.Lipow said that Wednesday's bullish US Department of Energy report was continuing to support the market.News of tumbling crude reserves in the United States, signaling improved demand in the world's largest crude consumer, on Wednesday pushed WTI to a one-month peak at $104.07, while Brent hit $110.55, the highest level in two-and-a-half-months.The traditional start of the US summer driving season this holiday weekend also implied stronger consumption of gasoline.Traders remained cautious as Ukraine faces a presidential election Sunday after six months of political crisis. The Ukrainian authorities are mobilizing tens of thousands of police and volunteers to try to ensure security on polling day, although the pro-Russian separatists are threatening to disrupt the vote in areas under their control in the industrial east.Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged Friday to respect the outcome of the election, but warned that the country had descended into all-out civil war after a bloody upsurge in separatist violence. At least seven people were killed in fighting between rebels and defense forces outside the eastern industrial hub of Donetsk on Friday, a day after the deaths of 18 soldiers in the heaviest loss for the Ukraine military since the conflict began.Political uncertainty in oil-rich Libya also was in focus. A renegade general's bid to rid the country of Islamists has alarmed oil investors fearing a further crippling of the embattled North African state's output, which has been stunted until recently due to rebel blockades.

Pietersen slams Downton as England axe row continues

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Kevin Pietersen has blasted England and Wales Cricket Board managing director Paul Downton for claiming he was uninterested during the dismal Ashes series in Australia.Downton launched a scathing attack on former England batsman Pietersen during an interview with BBC Radios Test Match Special on Thursday. The ECB chief said Pietersen appeared disinterested and distracted in the fifth Test in Sydney, and that he was unable to find anyone within the England set-up who wanted the controversial 33-year-old to remain in the team.Englands thrashing in the Test series in Australia was the beginning of the end for Pietersen, who was reported to have strained relations with several members of the squad and was eventually axed in February with Downton overseeing the decision.Until recently, the ECBs explanations for effectively ending the South Africa-born stars international career had contained only limited detail, but while Downton may have been hoping to draw a line in the sand on Thursday, Pietersens response ensures the saga will rumble on.The suggestion that I was uninterested during the winter Ashes series against Australia is wholly untrue, Pietersen said in a statement.Although I was having injections in my knee, which inhibited my mobility and thus my ability to field close to the wicket, I was fully motivated to play for England and whilst I accept that the series as a whole fell well below my own personal standards, I finished the series as the top scorer.I did, and continue to have a good relationship with most of the England players.Pietersen was criticised during the Ashes campaign for throwing his wicket away when well placed on more than one occasion and Downton touched on the issue again on Thursday. But Pietersen was Englands leading run-scorer in Australia, albeit with an average of 29.4 in 10 innings, and believes his attacking approach has served him well in the past. With regard to the criticisms aimed at my the way I play type attitude, I feel its only reasonable to remind Mr Downton that this method has brought me over 13,500 runs for England, in addition to being part of four Ashes-winning teams and a World T20-winning side, all of which achievements I am hugely proud of, Pietersen said.Pietersen, who became Englands highest ever run-scorer across all forms of cricket last year, also took issue with Downtons comments that it was the player who pushed to have his contract terminated. The comments regarding the cancellation of my contract should be put in perspective. It was made very clear to me that I was not being selected for the World T20 squad, and the ECB did not try to give me the remotest confidence that I would be seriously considered for selection for England again, Pietersen said.Had I allowed my contract to wind down, as the ECB proposed, I would not only have forfeited the performance-related elements that are part of the England player remuneration, but more importantly my availability as a professional cricketer would have remained under the control of the ECB for a further eight months.

Russian troops to quit Ukraine border in 20 days: military

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian troops near the Ukraine border will return to base in at least the next 20 days following an order from President Vladimir Putin, the militarys chief of general staff said Friday. The troops are being moved onto trains and military transport aircraft. This will take around 20 days, General Valery Gerasimov, Russias chief of general staff, was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti news agency. He dismissed a journalists suggestion that the pull-out would be completed by June 1.Putin on May 19 called an end to military exercises in regions bordering Ukraine, where troops had been deployed since March. The troops based in Russias western and southern regions began returning to their bases immediately on May 19, Gerasimov told journalists at a security conference in Moscow.NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Thursday that limited Russian troop movements near the border with Ukraine may suggest preparations for a withdrawal.Gerasimov insisted that the troops did not present a threat to Ukraine. The subject of a Russian threat has been actively repeated by Ukrainian media recently simply to scare the public, he said. The deployment of an estimated 40,000 troops raised fears that Moscow would intervene in eastern Ukraine to back pro-Russian separatists. Russia has insisted the exercises were routine. These are planned exercises that we do every year, said Gerasimov. The lack of destabilising gatherings of troops close to the Ukrainian border was confirmed by more than 10 inspector groups coming from NATO countries and Ukraine, which we accepted on our territory, he said.
