Nishikori is 1st Japanese man to break into top 10

Posted:

TOKYO (AP) - Kei Nishikori became the first Japanese man to break into the top 10 of the world tennis rankings on Monday.Nishikori, who is No. 9, was assured of a place in the top 10 after beating Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.It was a big goal for me to get top 10, but it's just only one week for now, Nishikori said on the ATP website. So I have to keep playing better tennis and keep this ranking. My goal is not to get one time into the top 10. Hopefully I can keep this ranking. The 24-year-old Nishikori beat David Ferrer 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3 in the semifinals in Madrid before retiring from Sunday's final with a hip injury when trailing Rafael Nadal 2-6, 6-4, 3-0.Nishikori, who went into the Madrid Open at No. 12, had previously reached a career-high of No. 11 in June 2013.The Japanese player beat Santiago Giraldo 6-2, 6-2 to win the Barcelona Open on April 27 for his fifth career title and his second of the year.Nishikori becomes the first Asian to rank inside the top 10 since Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand did so on March 29, 2004.

Football: Austin double fires QPR into play-off final

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - QPR staged a stirring fightback to reach the Championship play-off final as Charlie Austin's double clinched a 2-1 win over Wigan in the play-off semi-finals on Monday.Harry Redknapp's team, who had ground out a goalless draw in the first leg on Friday, fell behind early in the second leg at Loftus Road when James Perch struck for Wigan. But Austin, a 4 million pounds ($6.7 million) signing from Burnley in August, kept his nerve to convert a penalty with 17 minutes left and then bagged the winner in extra-time.The Hoops will face Derby County in the final at Wembley on May 24 as they look to secure an immediate return to the Premier League after last season's relegation. The side finishing fourth in the second tier has not won promotion to the Premier League since Charlton in 1997-98, but QPR are still in with a chance of ending that sequence. For Wigan, also relegated from the top-flight 12 months ago, there was frustration at a season of near-misses which included an FA Cup semi-final defeat against Arsenal on penalties.Uwe Rosler's side had stunned Loftus Road when Perch punished slack defending to open the scoring in the ninth minute.James McClean was granted too much time to whip over a fine cross from the left and QPR captain Clint Hill was slow to react as Perch arrived to poke home from close-range.QPR gradually recovered their composure and Croatian midfielder Niko Kranjcar showed great skill as he surged past Jordi Gomez to lash in a powerful strike that Scott Carson pushed over the bar.The hosts went close again when Austin rose to meet a corner and his header was cleared off the line by McClean, with QPR defender Nedum Onuoha unable to pounce on the rebound. But Wigan should have taken complete control midway through the second half when McClean burst into the area, only to see Rob Green save his initial effort before the Latics midfielder nudged the rebound onto a post.It was a big miss and Rosler's anger was clear as he threw his water bottle to the floor in disgust.QPR took full advantage of that escape with an equaliser in the 73rd minute.Wigan defender Gary Caldwell caught Junior Hoilett with a rash lunge just inside the area and Mark Clattenburg awarded a penalty which Austin calmly dispatched, sending Carson the wrong way.Joey Barton and Bobby Zamora came close to winning it for QPR, but with away goals not counting double in the play-offs, the tie went to extra-time.It was Wigan's 62nd game of a marathon season and the Lancashire side finally seemed to run out of steam as Redknapp's team went ahead six minutes into the additional period.Zamora collected a throw-in before clipping the ball towards Austin, who reacted quicker than Wigan defender Leon Barnett and stabbed a predatory finish past Carson to spark wild celebrations in rain-lashed west London.

Football: Ferdinand to leave United

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - The 35-year-old has lost his place in the United team over the last two years due to a series of injuries and it had been widely expected the former England defender would be allowed to quit Old Trafford at the end of this season.Ferdinand's contract expires in July and he has revealed he will not be signing an extension after regularly being left out as Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling have been preferred to him this term.In a statement on his website, Ferdinand said: I have thought long and hard over the last few months about my future, and after 12 fantastic years playing for what I regard as the best club in the world, I have decided the time is right for me to move on.Ferdinand made his last appearance for United on Sunday when he played in their 1-1 draw at Southampton on the final day of the Premier League campaign. His departure brings an end to a glorious 12-year stay at United, during which time he won six league titles, two League Cups, one Champions League and a Club World Cup.Ferdinand made 454 appearances, scoring eight goals, following his then British record 30 million pound ($50 million, 36 million euros) transfer from Leeds in 2002.The ex-England captain has no desire to retire and is now looking for a new club.I joined Manchester United in the hope of winning trophies, and never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined how successful we would be during my time here, Ferdinand added. There have been so many highlights, playing alongside some great players who have become good friends, winning my first Premier League title and also that fantastic night in Moscow (beating Chelsea to win the Champions League) memories that I will cherish forever.Circumstances didn't allow for me to say goodbye the way I would have liked but I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my team-mates, staff, the club and the fans for an unbelievable 12 years that I'll never forget.Winning trophies I dreamed about as a kid came true at this great club.I am feeling fit and healthy, ready for a new challenge and looking forward to whatever the future holds for me.Ferdinand, who won 81 caps for England before retiring from the international stage, signed a one-year extension to his United contract last year, but he found first-team opportunities harder to come by this season, making just 14 Premier League appearances. The decision to let Ferdinand go ignores the advice of interim manager Ryan Giggs, who insisted earlier this month the centre-back could still make a useful contribution and should be offered a new deal.United confirmed Ferdinand's announcement in a posting on their official Twitter account: MUFC would like to thank Rio Ferdinand for his long and distinguished service, and wish him well for the future.

Cycling: Wiggins wins time trial to take California lead

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Former Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins clocked 23min 18sec to win the time trial second stage on Monday and take the Tour of California overall lead. The British Team Sky rider knocked Garmin Sharp's early pace-setter Rohan Dennis of Australia into second place in the stage, 44 seconds adrift, with American Taylor Phinney third, 52 seconds back.Wiggins, who followed up his 2012 Tour de France triumph with a gold medal at the London Olympics that year, seized the overall lead in the eight-stage race. The race continues on Tuesday with a 174.5 km stage three that will take the field from San Jose to a finishing climb to the summit of Mount Diablo.

Oil climbs after Ukraine independence votes

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rose Monday after pro-Russian rebels held disputed referendums in eastern Ukraine and said voters chose independence, raising fears of a civil war that could disrupt oil supplies. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate for delivery in June, added 60 cents to close at $100.59 a barrel. Brent North Sea crude for June gained 52 cents to trade at $108.41 a barrel in London. With the risk of escalating geopolitical tensions in and around Ukraine... oil supplies could be disrupted, said Desmond Chua, analyst at CMC Markets in Singapore. Pro-Russian separatists claimed a massive victory in referendums held over the weekend in Donetsk and Lugansk.Kiev denounced the balloting as a criminal farce. The United States and the European Union condemned the self-rule votes as illegal. The crisis has raised fears of a violent breakup of Ukraine and the possibility of a civil war on Europe's eastern edge.Oil traders have priced in a lot of this risk and really are waiting to see what happens next, said Phil Flynn of Price Futures Group.Highlighting the stakes for the EU, Russia's state natural gas giant Gazprom warned it may halt shipments to Ukraine if the country does not pay upfront for its June deliveries, citing the country's debts totaling $3.51 billion.Nearly 15 percent of all natural gas consumed in Europe is delivered from Russia via Ukraine and previous disputes in 2006 and 2009 with Russia disrupted supplies to parts of the EU.The US and its Western European allies have accused Russia of fomenting unrest in Ukraine's east after the fall of pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych in February.Moscow strongly denies the allegations.

Dollar holds gains vs euro

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar was stable against the euro Monday, holding last week's gains after European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi said the ECB was ready to ease monetary policy soon.Analysts said that investors were still digesting Draghi's remarks, after a policy meeting Thursday, that the ECB was sufficiently concerned about the eurozone's low inflation to take action next month.By late Friday in New York, his comments had sent the dollar up about two cents, to $1.3758 per euro.Christopher Vecchio at Daily FX said the ECB had painted itself into a corner. The problem with planting a flag for action one month from now is that if the ECB does not do anything, it stands to lose a fair amount of credibility, Vecchio said. The likelihood that the euro would rally sharply in the wake of inaction once more seems like a fairly high probability in light of recent history. Implicitly, the ECB now has no choice but to act.Joe Manimbo at Western Union Business Solutions said the dollar has been undermined by mixed economic data and cautious remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen that suggest the US economy is still not strong enough for an increase in the federal funds rate held near zero for more than five years.US data due Tuesday on retail sales, and inflation and jobs data due Thursday, can shed light on underlying greenback sentiment, he said.

Bradman's first Test bat up for auction

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - The cricket bat used by Australian sporting legend Don Bradman to launch his Test career has been put up for auction and is expected to fetch up to Aus$145,000.Bradman, who retired with a yet-to-be-topped Test batting average of 99.94, used the bat to open his Test career in the 1928 series against England. It was donated by him to the Sydney Sun newspaper in 1930 as a competition prize to raise money for a children's hospital and was held by the boy who won until 2008 when he sold it for Aus$145,000 ($136,000).The current vendor, an Australian collector, put it on display at the National Sports Museum at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but has now decided to sell. The market is tougher now but we expect to reach around the same price again, Max Williamson of Mossgreen Auctions in Melbourne told AFP.Cricket has got a very big community of collectors so we expect it to be sold to a collector or an institution. The bat, signed by Bradman as DGB, also holds the signatures of 19 members of English and Australian teams who played in his maiden Test.Bradman scored just 18 and 1 in his first Test but went on to become a player widely acknowledged as the greatest batsman of all time. The market for memorabilia related to Bradman, who died in 2001 aged 92, remains strong with a bat he used and signed by his 1948 Invincible team selling for Aus$61,000 last year. The baggy green cap he wore at his final Test sold for more than Aus$400,000 dollars in 2008.

IMF monitors Ukraine crisis situation

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The International Monetary Fund said Monday it was monitoring the situation in Ukraine after disputed pro-Russia separatist votes in the east of the country. In April, the IMF approved a $17 billion aid package for Ukraine, but warned it may need to be recalibrated if Kiev loses control of the highly industrialized east.According to the global crisis lender, the eastern provinces of Donetsk, Lugansk and Kharkiv account for 21.5 percent of the country's economic output and 30 percent of industrial production.Separatists held controversial referendums in Donetsk and Lugansk on Sunday and said the votes were victories for independence. The IMF, which has already disbursed $3.2 billion of the aid to Kiev, has not indicated what it would do if the country breaks up.The IMF releases loan installments on condition national authorities make sufficient progress in economic reforms and other measures required by the aid program. The next scheduled program review for Kiev is in July.

Football: FIFA, a creative force not destructive, says Valcke

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said Monday the games global governing body did not deserve criticism for its role in organizing the event in Brazil saying that they were not out to destroy a country but do quite the opposite.Brazil has struggled to overhaul creaking public services and the hosts have dropped a slew of urban mobility schemes in order to meet the June 12 kickoff, while racing against the clock to finalise stadium preparations.Brazilians have held numerous protests against the cost of staging the event -- more than $11 billion -- in the belief the cash would be better directed at overhauling health, education and public transport.Protesters have meanwhile repeatedly blamed FIFA for imposing its norms for the 12 venues and for issues such as rising rentals in areas near swanky multi-million dollar stadiums.Valcke, who also told French radio later on Monday he would stay on in his role only if FIFA president Sepp Blatter is elected to a fifth term next year, said the criticism was unfair. When people are saying that we have put something into the World Cup that they could use for other projects, theyre wrong. The World Cup is a way to speed up a number of investments in a country. It is easy to criticise FIFA, its easy to use the Confederations Cup or World Cup to organise demonstrations. But the target is wrong if the target is that FIFA are the reason for whats happening in a country. If a country is bidding for a World Cup, its with the idea of developing the country and not with the idea of destroying the country.Valcke stressed that the physical legacy of a tournament would only become clear years after the event, but hailed the example of South Africa in 2010 as proof of the gains to flow from hosting the tournament. In South Africa, the lives of the people in some of the cities have changed because those cities have invested a lot of money to change their infrastructure, Valcke told FIFAs website.Valcke admitted last week that FIFA had been through hell regarding preparations in having to liaise with three levels of government in Brazil. But he insisted Monday that fans would enjoy a great tournament and added that security in and around the stadiums is no issue.

West Antarctic ice sheet collapse 'unstoppable': NASA

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Ice is melting in the western Antarctic at an unstoppable pace, scientists said Monday, warning that the discovery holds major consequences for global sea level rise in the coming decades. The speedy melting means that prior calculations of sea level rise worldwide made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will have to be adjusted upwards, scientists told reporters.A large sector of the West Antarctic ice sheet has gone into a state of irreversible retreat. It has passed the point of no return, said Eric Rignot, professor of Earth system science at the University of California Irvine. The retreat of ice is unstoppable, he said, noting that surveys have shown there is no large hill at the back of these glaciers that could hold back the melting ice. This retreat will have major consequences for sea level rise worldwide, he added, anticipating the melting will take place largely in the next two centuries. It will raise sea level by 1.2 meters or four feet, said Rignot, whose paper appears in the peer-reviewed Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.A pair of published studies document observational changes in the Antarctic in recent years, and predict the future behavior of the melting ice through computer models.Rignot, a glaciologist at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said his study compiled data from satellites, airplanes, ships and ground surveys in the west Antarctic ice sheet.Retreat of the Pine Island glacier has slowed in recent years, but scientists said that was likely to due to a very rapid retreat it went through at first. The nearby Thwaites glacier has been speeding up since 2006.From year to year things can change a little bit, so it is really important when looking at this observational evidence to look at the long term trend of these glaciers, Rignot said.A separate study published in the journal Science on Monday found that Thwaites glacier is melting fast and that its collapse could raise global sea level nearly two feet (61 centimeters). That study was based largely on computer modeling of the future, in addition to airborne radar measurements of the West Antarctic ice sheet that allowed scientists to map the underlying bedrock.Study author Ian Joughin, a glaciologist at the University of Washington, said the process is now expected to take between 200 and 1,000 years. He also found that such a collapse may be inevitable. All of our simulations show it will retreat at less than a millimeter of sea level rise per year for a couple of hundred years, and then, boom, it just starts to really go, Joughin said.Current projections of sea level rise, agreed upon by international surveys, do not account for the Antarctic ice sheet melting.Sridhar Anandakrishnan, professor of geosciences at Pennsylvania State University, said that studies like these will cause the United Nations to revisit their projections. The number for 2100 will almost certainly be revised and revised upwards, and my guess is toward what is now their upper limit of something like 90 centimeters, close to three feet, said Anandakrishnan, who was not involved in the new reports. He said that the rise in sea level is widely accepted to be a result of human-caused climate change, driven by the burning of fossil fuels. As glaciers and ice sheets flow faster, that water has nowhere to go but in the ocean and once in the ocean this results in a rise in sea level around the globe, he told reporters.Even though in the past, Greenland has been the source of most melting glaciers, that appears to be changing, with more and more coming from the South Pole. Thus far the loss of ice from Antarctica has not been of the same scale. This appears to be changing, he said.

IHC adjourns Geo's intra-court appeal case for indefinite period

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - A two-member bench of Islamabad High Court (IHC) comprising Chief Justice IHC Anwar Khan Kasi and Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui heard Geo-Jang group’s intra-court appeal against Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).Geo’s lawyer Akram Shaeikh said that PEMRA’s investigation against the media group were illegal as the authority has no chairman. In his remarks, Justice Shaukat Aziz said that the earlier decision of the single-bench of IHC was not challenged.Akram Sheikh said this was just a mistake and he admits this. He pleaded to the court to grant relief to Geo-Jang Group.Upon this, Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui remarked that Geo likes the court decision in its favour whereas it does not like the ruling against it. He said Geo should wait for the decision by Ministry of Law.Geo’s lawyer prayed to the bench to dismiss the case. The court adjourned the hearing for indefinite period. On Saturday, a petition was filed against Geo News, provincial and federal ministers in Supreme Court making individuals including Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, Amir Mir, PEMRA, Khawaja Saad Rafique and Khawaja Asif respondents to the petition. The petitioners allege that government is influencing PEMRA, Dunya News reported. The petition was filed by Advocate Syed Ali Imran and Munir Tariq and makes seventeen individuals including Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, Amir Mir, Khawaja Saad Rafique and Khawaja Asif parties to the petition. The petition moves that the statements of Khawaja Asif, Saad Rafique and Rana Sanaullah in the aftermath of attack on prominent journalist Hamir Mir defamed Pakistan Army. The petition adds that the government influenced PEMRA in the inquiry and seeks PEMRA to conduct impartial and independent investigation into the matter. The petition pleads that Mir Shakil, Amir Mir, Khawaja Saad Rafique and Khawaja Asif should be summoned in court in personal capacity and explanation should be sought. It is pertinent to mention here that private TV channel Geo News landed itself into controversy on April 19 in its coverage following the attack on prominent journalist Hamid Mir.The attack was reported on every national TV channel including Dunya News within minutes of attack; however, Geo News distinguished itself in coverage by airing Hamid Mir’s brother Amir Mir’s allegations against chief of a national institution.Geo News allegedly took it to task to repeatedly malign and defame DG ISI by flashing his picture on the breaking news broadcast for at least eight hours. The channel backtracked by terming the allegations as Hamid Mir’s brother’s own statement and not of the channel’s.Amir Mir claimed during the broadcast that Hamid Mir had informed him that DG ISI Lt. General Zaheer-ul-Islam is to be blamed if he was attacked.

British satellite operator offers global tracking service after MH370

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - British satellite operator Inmarsat said Monday it was offering a basic tracking service to all the worlds passenger airlines free of charge, following the disappearance of Malaysian Airways flight MH370.Inmarsat, which has played a role in the search for the missing plane, said the service it was offering would provide definitive positional information. It will allow a plane to determine its location using GPS and send that data over Inmarsats global network at 15-minute intervals. While GPS (Global Positioning System) is commonplace in cars and mobile phones, the international air traffic control network is still almost entirely based on radar.Rupert Pearce, CEO of Inmarsat, said that in the wake of the loss of flight MH370, which disappeared without a trace on March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board, it was simply the right thing to do to provide a free service. In the so far fruitless search for the Malaysian jet, electronic pings from Inmarsat equipment on the lost plane led investigators to search for wreckage in the Indian Ocean.Inmarsat said it would also offer a black box in the sky service under which a plane that had deviated off course -- which is believed to be the case with flight MH370 -- could transmit historic and real-time information from the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder.More than two months since MH370 disappeared, no wreckage has been found to even confirm a crash, despite teams scouring sites in the Indian Ocean.

EU gives OSCE a chance on Ukraine, still readying sanctions

Posted:

BRUSSELS (AFP) - The European Union gave dialogue another chance in the Ukraine crisis, signing on to a new OSCE roadmap for peace Monday while warning of tough sanctions if a May 25 election fails.Meeting a day after sharply-criticised separatist votes in eastern Ukraine, EU foreign ministers ramped up sanctions, slapping an asset freeze and travel ban on a further 13 people. For the first time in the months-long crisis, the ministers also targeted entities, extending the EU blacklist to 61 names by also freezing the assets of two firms confiscated in Crimea and Sevastopol after Russias March annexation of the territory. But the tone of Mondays statements appeared conciliatory, with the door left open to dialogue and the emphasis on the need for a successful May 25 presidential vote in Ukraine.I hope we will strongly support those elections, said British Foreign Secretary William Hague. In the vast majority of Ukraine there is no difficulty with the elections going ahead. In Brussels to brief the ministers on his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week, Swiss President Didier Brkhalter, current chair of the influential East-West security organisation OSCE, said there was a window of opportunity of a few days ahead of the vote. The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe was planning to send 1,000 monitors to Ukraine for the election, one of the biggest missions in the organisations history. It is very important that we believe that the election can take place and that we act in that direction, he said. But first the OSCE was attempting to launch a national dialogue to bring all players around the table, from the government, the parliament and the regions.Repeatedly stressing we cant lose time, Berkhalter said he hoped not only for wide Ukrainian support but also the backing of the EU, Russia and the United States to enable roundtable talks to launch in the next few days.If we want to succeed in the end it is about the integration of all actors. The integration of the Russian Federation above all is very important. We have seen in Moscow that there is an openness for a dialogue, said Burkhalter. In charge of the ambitious plan will be respected veteran German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger who would moderate the hoped-for talks alongside a Ukrainian bipartisan figure. The most important thing right now is to get this process started in the coming days, said German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. If this can be reached I think the atmosphere in Ukraine can be turned around.- Diplomats sceptical of Russia -But some remained sceptical. Mr Putin has made no concessions up until now, so why change? said a diplomat. We do not see efforts by Russia to de-escalate the tension, said Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linkus Linkevicius whose country is highly suspicious of Moscow due to its history.EU diplomats acknowledge in private that there are very big differences between the EU nations over widening the sanctions regime to include economic sanctions on banks or the energy sector that would also hurt many in Europe.Hague however said at the close of the talks that Europe was intent on keeping up the pressure on Moscow and was ready to slap so-called Phase 3 economic sanctions on Russia should it meddle in the presidential vote.It will be the actions of Russia on May 25 that will decide whether such sanctions are necessary, he said.Italy along with Cyprus, Bulgaria, Spain and Greece rejected any such idea, Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini said, explaining it was not useful to set red lines.Meanwhile, ministers roundly condemned Sundays separatist referendums in eastern Ukraine.Hague said: The votes in the Eurovision contest were more credible and carried more weight.

Cyprus welcomes rights court decision on Turkish invasion

Posted:

NICOSIA (AFP) - Cyprus Monday welcomed a European Court of Human Rights decision ordering Turkey to compensate it for the 1974 Turkish invasion, saying Nicosia expects Ankara to fully comply with the judgement. The court ordered Turkey to pay 90 million euros ($124 million) in compensation to Greek Cypriots who suffered discrimination as a result of the invasion of the island.Cyprus government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides in a written statement said Nicosia was especially satisfied with the courts reference that Turkey has not fully complied with the 2001 decision.Thirteen years ago, the European court found Turkey guilty of massive and continuous rights violations following the invasion and later creation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised only by Ankara. We welcome the award of compensation for moral damages to the relatives of the missing (persons) of 30 million euros, Christodoulides said. The court ruling said 30 million euros should go to the families of people who disappeared after the invasion, and the rest to enclaved Greek Cypriots on the Karpas peninsula in the north of the divided island. With regard to awarding compensation for moral damages amounting to 60 million to the enclaved, the persecution and hardship that they have endured cannot be measured in money, Christodoulides said.He said Nicosia welcomed the court once again condemning Turkeys policy of human rights violations against the enclaved and the attempt to change the demographic character of the occupied areas. The government looks forward to the immediate compliance of Turkey by taking the necessary measures to stop the illegal exploitation and sale of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied areas and payment of the compensation awarded by the Court.A statement from the governments Legal Services department said the compensation related to 1,456 Greek Cypriot missing and the enclaved was equivalent to 50,000 pounds sterling for each person. It said it was studying the court decision in closer detail.
