No Obama-Putin one-on-one at D-Day anniversary

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama has no plans to meet one-on-one with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in June when both attend the D-Day anniversary in France, the White House said Thursday.Russia's intervention in the political crisis in Ukraine has triggered the worst chill in relations between Washington and Moscow since the end of the Cold War.Both leaders are expected to attend the June 6 ceremony of remembrance in Normandy to mark the 70th anniversary of the Allied landings in Nazi-occupied France during World War II.But Caitlin Hayden, spokeswoman for Obama's National Security Council, told reporters: There's no plan for President Obama to meet with President Putin. We understand France invited all countries that were party to the conflict and we would not expect France to dis-invite Russia from this historic event... because of what's taking place in Ukraine.State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that our current differences over Ukraine notwithstanding, the fact remains that the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Soviet Union and many others united 70 years ago to defeat Nazism. This was a historic victory and those who sacrificed to bring peace to Europe deserve to be honored as part of that.Hayden added that although there were no plans for Obama to meet Putin, they'll be at the same events so I can't rule out they won't speak on the margins, as is the case at any multilateral event.Obama's administration had attempted in recent years to build improved relations with Russia, Washington's former Cold War foe.But this re-set foundered on divisions over Syria, where Moscow is propping up Bashar al-Assad's regime, and Ukraine, where Putin seized the Crimea region and encouraged separatist rebels.

Clashes in Chile as students protest

Posted:

SANTIAGO (AFP) - Chilean police deployed water cannons and fired tear gas on Thursday to disperse student protesters after a march to demand education reforms from President Michelle Bachelet.Skirmishes broke out involving hooded protesters and police at the end of a mostly peaceful demonstration through Santiago involving tens of thousands of students.During an intense campaign that ended in a landslide victory in December, Bachelet promised free university-level education and to end state subsidies for private, for-profit colleges, which have put higher education out of reach of the poor. But students Thursday -- in their first protest since Bachelet took office -- repeated the same demands they had rallied for over the past three years, leery of what they fear is their requests not being met.Around 40,000 people participated in the protest, police said, while organizers of the march, which brought together university and school students, said there were more than 100,000 participants.Student leaders who had met he education minister, said the few reform details made public so far do not make clear whether their demands will be met. This is a government that is not laying out clear steps to change the course of education in Chile, that is not acting on the very catchlines and slogans it took from the social movement, and it is against this that the students are marching, Melissa Sepulveda, president of the student federation at the University of Chile, told AFP.The students were also asking for improved public education in general, another Bachelet campaign promise.A small police force watched on as the students marked their route, which included the Palacio de La Moneda, the government seat that conservative president Sebastian Pinera forbade them from passing two years ago.Bachelet, who promised free university education in the next six years, has already sent Congress a tax reform that aims to raise $8.2 billion to finance that and other measures.Ongoing student protests have occurred in Chile since 2011, when masses of students began rallying against one of the world's most privatized and segregated educational systems, a vestige of the 1973-1990 dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

Strong quake shakes Mexico, breaks bridge

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake rattled Mexico on Thursday, causing a bridge to collapse in the south and sending people fleeing into the capital's streets as buildings swayed.Mexico City, a megalopolis of 20 million people, escaped major damage and injuries as residents evacuated homes and offices.Hundreds of tourists calmly left their hotels in the Pacific resort of Acapulco and returned after a few minutes. But a large chunk of a road's bridge collapsed in Tecpan de Galeana, near the epicenter of the earthquake in southern Guerrero state, according to a picture posted by the state's public safety agency on Twitter.Guerrero state authorities were reviewing the region's infrastructure for any damage. None was reported in the state capital, Chilpancingo. The US Geological Survey said the quake was centered 15 kilometers (eight miles) north of Tecpan de Galeana and 277 kilometers (172 miles) southwest of Mexico City. The earthquake had a depth of 23 kilometers. The USGS initially measured it at a magnitude of 6.8 before revising it down.At first it felt like a jolt and then it started to move. We are used to it but you never know how long it will last or how strong it will be, which is why we always evacuate, said Daniel Rodriguez, 55, an engineer who fled his second-floor Mexico City office. As the earth shook, Finance Minister Luis Videgaray was delivering a speech and stopped mid sentence. If it's alright with you, we will take a break because it is shaking, Videgaray calmly told the audience.Mexico's National Seismology Service reported at least two aftershocks of 5.1 and 4.9 magnitude. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no widespread threat of destructive waves. The temblor came three weeks after a powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook the capital and the Pacific resort of Acapulco on April 18, breaking some windows and walls but sparing the country from any major damage or injuries.Mexico City is sensitive to distant earthquakes because it was built over soft soil from a drained lake that magnifies their effect. In 1985, thousands of people were killed in Mexico City when buildings collapsed after an 8.1-magnitude temblor struck the Pacific coast.

Tennis: Murray beaten as Nadal, Serena, advance in Madrid

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Wimbledon champion Andy Murray's return to action at the Madrid Masters was ended in the third round by Santiago Giraldo on Thursday as the Colombian romped to a 6-3, 6-2 win.Murray was competing for the first time in a month in the Spanish capital and was powerless to stop the in-form Giraldo, who reached the final of the Barcelona Open two weeks ago, as he sealed victory in just over an hour to set up a quarter-final meeting with Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.He played very well from start to finish, he didn't make many mistakes, but I didn't make it hard enough for him in the second set towards the end, said MurrayI didn't put enought pressure on him to force him to make errors. He dictated most of the points and deserved to win.World number one Rafael Nadal remains on course to retain his title as he moved into the last eight with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Finland's Jarkko Nieminen.Nadal had come into the tournament looking to dispel doubts after suffering shock defeats to David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters and the Barcelona Open respectively. However, he looked in fine form as he took nine of the opening 10 games to move 6-1, 3-0 in front.Nieminen then briefly threatened a comeback as he broke back and even had break points at 4-4 in the second set, but Nadal held on before sealing victory when the world number 57 fired long in the next game.I am happy because I think until 3-0 in the second set I played the best I have on clay since I started in Monte Carlo, said Nadal. It's just a question of finding my rhythm, my level of play and I am doing that little by little. Tomorrow will be another tough match and I need to prepare well for that.I did what I needed to do today and I just need to find that little bit more consistency which I lost after 3-0 in the second set.Next up for the 13-time Grand Slam champion is a meeting with sixth seed Tomas Berdych after the Czech came through in three sets against Bulgarian 12th seed Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.Japan's Kei Nishikori continued his fine form on clay after winning in Barcelona two weeks ago as he outlasted eighth seed Milos Raonic in two tie-breaks 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/5) and will face Feliciano Lopez in the last eight after he was handed a walkover against Stanislas Wawrinka's conqueror Dominic Thiem.David Ferrer was too strong for big-serving American John Isner as the world number five progressed 6-4, 6-4 and will meet Ernests Gulbis who also beat Marin Cilic in straight sets.Serena Williams also maintained her quest for a third consecutive Madrid Open title with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.Williams was broken twice in her opening three service games, but Suarez Navarro was unable to consolidate the break and once the American moved ahead 4-2 she saw out the set comfortably.More of the same was to come in the second set as Suarez Navarro held serve just once and, despite her serve being broken twice more, Williams went on to set up a meeting with fifth seed Petra Kvitova in the last eight.I played Carla on clay I think last year, but in Rome. I feel like she actually played really well today, she made me work for every point and it wasn't an easy win, said Williams.Kvitova was also a winner in straight sets as she overcame Czech compatriot Lucie Safarova 6-4, 6-3.Second seed Li Na had a more difficult morning as she had to come from a set down to beat 16th seed Sloane Stephens 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.I think she was hitting the ball like pretty heavy. Normally the girls play flatter, but she was playing pretty heavy and it was my first time playing against her so she caused me problems, admitted Li.After the first set I had to tell myself to calm down. After that you can only look forward otherwise you won't find a way back.Next up for Li is a meeting with four-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova as she proved too strong for 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur in a 6-4, 6-3 victory.Polish third seed Agnieszka Radwanska will play French qualifier Caroline Garcia into the quarter-finals as she thrashed Italian Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-1.And fourth seed Simona Halep completed the quarter-final line up as she came from a set down to beat 15th seed Sabine Lisicki to set up a clash with Ana Ivanovic.

Tennis: Federer will play French Open, says agent

PARIS (AFP) - Roger Federer will take part in the French Open despite earlier suggesting he may take time out to be with wife Mirka, who gave birth to the couple's second set of twins this week.Federer's agent, Tony Godsick, told www.ATPworldtour.com that the Swiss intends to feature at the French Open, which starts at Roland Garros in Paris on May 25, where he would stretch his consecutive run of Grand Slam events to 58.Roger plans on playing Roland Garros and he will make a decision at the last minute if he will play Rome (next week) depending on how everything is going with his family, said Godsick.Mirka Federer gave birth to sons Leo and Lenny on Tuesday. The couple already have twin girls, Myla Rose and Charlene Ri, who will be five in July.Federer, 32, has played in a record 57 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments, this past January eclipsing the mark previously set by Wayne Ferreira in 2003.He will be making his 16th straight appearance at the French Open, where he won the title in 2009 to complete a career Slam.

Golf: Kaymer shoots 63 to seize Players lead

Posted:

PONTE VEDRA BEACH (AFP) - Germany's Martin Kaymer birdied his last four holes to complete a record-tying nine-under par 63 opening round and seize a two-shot clubhouse lead Thursday at the US PGA Players Championship.Kaymer, who began on the 10th tee, fired the lowest nine-hole score in Players history, a seven-under 29 on the front side at TPC Sawgrass.Kaymer's 63 matched Fred Couples in 1992, Greg Norman in 1994 and Roberto Castro last year for the lowest round in the tournament's 40-year history. That moved Kaymer, the 2010 PGA Championship winner, two strokes clear of American Russell Henley for the lead at the $10 million event with only the last few groups on the course.A pack in the clubhouse on 67 included reigning US Open champion Justin Rose, fellow Englishman Lee Westwood, Spaniards Sergio Garcia and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Americans Brian Stuard, Jordan Spieth, Gary Woodland and Scott Stallings.Kaymer made short birdie putts at the par-5 11th and par-4 15th, but sizzled after the turn, starting with a 26-foot birdie putt at the first.Kaymer reached the green at the par-5 second in two and tapped in for birdie, then added a 14-foot birdie at the fourth before closing with four birdies in a row.The stellar final run included a 17-foot putt at the par-3 eighth and a tap-in birdie at the par-5 ninth after blasting out of a bunker just 20 inches from the cup.Henley, who missed the cut last year in his Players debut, fired a back-nine 30 that matched the low back-nine mark, with no putt longer than 16 feet.I knew I was playing well and felt really comfortable on the greens, Henley said. As long as I keep feeling comfortable with the putter, I think I can putt well on these greens.Henley opened with three birdies in the first four holes but suffered his lone stumble of the day at the par-4 seventh when his tee shot found the water on his way to a double bogey.Henley answered by opening the back nine with three birdies in a row and running off three more in a row from the 15th through 17th holes.Using fewer drivers off tees and more fairway woods after struggling at last year's Players, Henley hit 13 of 18 greens in regulation at 11 of 14 fairways.Playing some of the holes a little less aggressive has helped me to stay in there and make some pars, Henley said.Henley, 25, seeks his third PGA title, having won last year's Sony Open in Hawaii in his first start as a PGA Tour member and taken a four-way playoff to win the Honda Classic in March.Four players in the field are able to dethrone Tiger Woods from atop the world rankings this week but after the first 18 holes none of them were in the position they needed to do so.Aussie Adam Scott, who needs a top-16 showing, was one-over with three holes to play.Sweden's Henrik Stenson, who must finish in the top six, was two-under with two remaining.American Matt Kuchar, who must win to have a chance, was three-under with three to play.American Bubba Watson, who last month won his second Masters title in three years, was two-under with three holes to play.Rose, preparing to defend the major title he won last year at Merion next month at Pinehurst, had an awful warm-up session but shined on the course. One of those weird days in the game of golf, Rose said. Had not much feel of anything that I was doing to be honest with you and having played quite well recently, it was a bit of an out?of?the?blue moment.

Formula One: Alonso rules out podium for Ferrari in Spain

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Fernando Alonso on Thursday ruled out thoughts of claiming another podium finish for Ferrari in this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. The team, however, was building up a 'slow recovery' after a mediocre start to the season and could recover the speed to join the championship scrap, the Spaniard said.Just a few hours after hearing that the pace-setting Mercedes team believed that Ferrari were their main rivals, Alonso said he had no expectation of delivering another top-three finish, as in China last month. We will do our best, said the two-time world champion who won his and Ferrari's last race a year ago in front of his fellow-Spaniards.We know it will be a tough weekend, and you never know.It is sport, anything can happen, but today sitting here if I tell you I will fight for the podium, probably I will lie to you and I don't want to do so for all the people that are coming. We cannot start the weekend thinking to be on the podium or thinking to win the race. That will be creating wrong and false targets to everyone that will come here.We finished ninth and 10th in Bahrain and we did a podium in China because we put some things together that Sunday. So, it is not that we are in a position now that we will fight for the podium here.Looking ahead, he stressed that he believed it was possible to catch Mercedes before they were beyond reach in the title race.We must do anything we can to close that gap and become competitive, he said. That will not happen between one race and the next one.It will be a slow recovery and hopefully not too late when we become competitive in terms of points to fight for the championship. So let's do it race by race.China was a combination of things, and good luck to get that podium. Here in Barcelona is a good point to check how competitive we are, a circuit with different characteristics again and a circuit that will give us an answer or some of the parameters where we need to find some answers. Then there is Monaco, Canada, completely different circuits. We are in a moment of the championship and we need to ask many, many things in terms of how competitive we can be.

Boxing: Klitschko ordered to defend IBF title against Pulev

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Undisputed heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has been ordered to defend his International Boxing Federation title against unbeaten Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev, the latter's promoter said Thursday.Klitschko defended his titles -- which include the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation belts as well as the IBF strap -- two weeks ago against Australian Alex Leapai, whom he stopped in the fifth round. That was a mandatory WBO defence and now the IBF have declared 33-year-old Pulev as their mandatory challenger. That's what I call a late birthday gift, said Pulev, who celebrated his 33rd birthday last Sunday. I was ringside when Wladimir defended his belts a few weeks ago. It was a walk in the park for him against Leapai. When Klitschko meets me inside the ring, I will cause him real problems to say the least. I will show the fans worldwide that Klitschko is no invincible machine and fulfil my dream.Pulev's promoter Kalle Sauerland said discussions had already been set in motion. The negotiations with Team Klitschko have already begun. We are excited to present a heavyweight bout in cooperation with K2 (Klitschko's promoter), which is deserving of its 'Heavyweight World Championship' status, said Sauerland.Pulez, who has 20 wins from as many fights with 11 of those coming inside the distance, is widely regarded as the best of the rest beside Klitschko in the heavyweight division. The world amateur super-heavyweight bronze medallist from 2005 beat twice world title challenger and Klitschko victim Tony Thompson on points back in August last year, having stopped a couple of strapping and promising eastern Europeans in Alexander Ustinov and Alexander Dimitrenko before that.No date has been set for the clash but it may not necessarily happen in Klitschko's next bout. After beating Leapai, Klitschko, 38, with 62 wins, 52 KOs and just three defeats in his 65-fight career, said he wanted to unify all the titles. His brother Vitali was holding the World Boxing Council belt until announcing his retirement recently to concentrate on politics in Ukraine.Haiti-born Canadian Bermane Stiverne and American Chris Arreola will contest that vacant belt on Saturday. It's my dream to unify the four titles. I've never had the WBC belt, said Klitschko after beating Leapai. While Leapai was seen as little more than a punching bag for Klitschko, Pulev has a burgeoning reputation and is seen as a genuine threat, although the last such, Russian Alexander Povetkin, was sent to the canvas four times in a shut-out points victory in October.

Oil prices dip on profit taking

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices fell Thursday as traders booked profits from the previous day's rally on signs of strengthening crude demand in the United States. The market also retreated on an apparent easing of tensions over the Ukraine-Russia crisis, traders said, although the crisis appeared to be reigniting Thursday. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate for delivery in June, closed at $100.26 a barrel, a loss of 51 cents from Wednesday. Brent North Sea crude for June dipped nine cents to settle at $108.04 a barrel in London.Petroleum prices are moderately lower on profit taking off Wednesday's rally as traders digest both recent headlines on Ukraine and the latest US inventory data, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures. The oil market had jumped Wednesday by more than $1 after US crude inventories unexpectedly fell from a record high last week, suggesting that demand may be picking up the world's leading crude consumer.Traders also appeared cautious ahead of the weekend as the Ukraine-Russia crisis continues to grind on, said Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinion, pointing to modest trade volumes as evidence. Investors were also digesting Chinese official trade data released Thursday. The world's largest energy consumer posted a $18.45 billion trade surplus in April, up sharply from a March surplus of $7.7 billion.China's trade data show signs of recovery but continue to understate the true health of the export sector, said Julian Evans-Pritchard, China economist for Capital Economics.Oil imports jumped 23 percent from March to 6.86 million barrels per day in China, the world's largest energy consumer, Barclays analyst Sijin Cheng noted. While demand was gradually recovering in April after a sluggish holiday season, the surge in imports likely reflected strategic stockpiling rather than refinery demand. Refinery throughput is likely to remain on the soft side during the spring maintenance season, he said.

Euro hits 2.5-year dollar peak before slumping

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - The euro soared Thursday to a two-and-a-half-year high after the European Central Bank kept its interest rate at all-time low, but then tumbled on hints of more easing. At about 1240 GMT, the single currency surged to $1.3993, which was the highest level since October 31, 2011.It then dived to $1.3887 in mid-afternoon London deals, after ECB chief Mario Draghi hinted that fresh easing measures could be unveiled next month.Draghi walked the euro higher by not taking action this month, and then walked it lower by hinting at the potential for action in June, said Kathleen Brooks, research director at trading site Forex.com.The move higher was a knee-jerk reaction to the ECB remaining on hold, but it did not last long, she told AFP.The bank, meeting this month in Brussels, held its key refi or refinancing rate at 0.25 percent for the seventh month in a row, as widely expected. However, speaking after the decision, ECB president Draghi gave a strong hint of an imminent cut in eurozone interest rates soon.Draghi said the decision-making body was comfortable with the idea of easing monetary conditions in June. The governing council is comfortable with acting next time, but before, we want to see the staffs projections that will come up in early June, Draghi said. The ECB is scheduled to publish its latest updated growth and inflation forecasts next month.Draghi warnings of a potential June policy move has sapped some momentum from euro/dollar for now, said Rabobank analyst Jane Foley. However, further stimulus may increase the interest in peripheral assets and therefore there is no guarantee that an ECB move will lead to a sustained downtrend in euro/dollar. Only a stronger dollar would guarantee that.

Cook grateful for England support

Posted:

ABERDEEN (AFP) - Alastair Cook said Thursday the backing of his colleagues and team management had persuaded him to continue as England captain after he questioned his own position following a wretched Ashes series.Cook found himself under the spotlight after England's recent 5-0 thrashing in Australia, a campaign where the opening batsman managed just 277 runs at an average of under 28.Team director Andy Flower resigned and one-day coach Ashley Giles was axed following England's embarrassing defeat by the Netherlands at the subsequent World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.Disconnected star batsman Kevin Pietersen was sent into international exile but the England and Wales Cricket Board hierarchy remained strong in their support of Cook.I was asked about (my future) after Sydney and after a long, gruelling winter, I gave it consideration, Cook, speaking in Aberdeen, where England play Scotland in a one-day international on Friday, told reporters. I think it would be wrong if I didn't, he added. We'd lost a lot of games and we hadn't played to the standard that side was capable of, and the stuff we were doing was not making a difference. If you don't question your position as leader then, you never will. But with backing from the likes of Stuart Broad and Ravi Bopara, a longstanding colleague of Cook at Essex as well as with England, the left-hander decided to carry on as skipper. It was nice that the guys I spoke to, other members of the side, were very supportive and that's good to hear, Cook said. I spoke to Stuart Broad and Ravi Bopara and they said 'no, you must carry on'.The ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), since Paul Downton's come in, they've backed me and we've got to justify that confidence. It's a great honour to captain England, when we walk out at the venues and they announce the England (team) led by me it's a great feeling. But you've got to be winning games of cricket.England launch their new era against a Scotland side who will be among their pool opponents at next year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. In many ways it is a classic 'no-win' situation for England, who will be desperate to avoid fresh humiliation at the hands of an associate or non-Test nation following their Dutch debacle. It is a banana skin fixture, Cook said. They (Scotland) are in a great position with nothing to lose and they've got some talent.Friday's match will be the first of Moores's second spell in charge after his first stint ended in 2009 after a falling out with Pietersen that saw the South Africa-born shotmaker stripped of the England captaincy.Mooresy and I were together in 2007 and the (England) Academy before then so we know each other but it is new territory and it will take time to settle down, Cook said.We want to get back to winning ways. For Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer, an opponent of Cook's in county cricket where he now plays for Northamptonshire, there was huge pride at the prospect of leading the team out in his home town.I was born and raised in Aberdeen. I'm immensely looking forward to it, especially in Aberdeen, he said. Two new balls in any ODI in the UK can be a challenge.England didn't have the winter they'd like to have and hopefully we can bring back some bad memories.

Ireland-Sri Lanka ODI washed out

DUBLIN (AFP) - The second one-day international between Ireland and Sri Lanka in Dublin on Thursday was abandoned without a ball bowled due to rain.Umpires Richard Kettleborough and Richard Smith took the decision after a 2:00pm local time (1300GMT) inspection, ruling the outfield too wet for any play.It had rained heavily overnight and further rain in the morning also left damp patches on the pitch.Sri Lanka won the two-match series 1-0 after their 79-run victory in Dublin on Tuesday.Sri Lanka's tour continues with a one-day match against county side Essex on Monday, one of several 'warm-up' fixtures ahead of limited overs and Test series with England.
