Tennis: Berlocq stuns top seed Berdych for Portugal title

Posted:

OEIRAS (AFP) - Argentina's Carlos Berlocq rallied to overhaul Czech top seed Tomas Berdych 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 on Sunday to win his second career title with victory at the Portugal Open. The world number 62 becomes the sixth tournament winner over the age of 30 this year on the ATP with his victory in two hours, nine minutes against the world number six.Berdych was the South American's second top 10 victim of the week after putting out ninth-ranked Milos Raonic of Canada in the quarter-finals.This is truly a dream for me, said the winner, who found his form just in time after losing the opening set in 28 minutes. But the South American baseliner, whose on-court grunting has irritated a string of rivals in recent years, regained his poise and slowly began to make inroads against the top seed playing on a wild card.To win this title today, I had to beat one of the best in the world. It was an honour to play and to win this final, he said.It was really tough for me at the start, he was playing very aggressive. But I managed to slowly lift my game and get into the match. For me, the second set was like starting everything all over again. I managed to improve throughout the second and third sets and somehow I got the win.Berlocq became the fifth Argentine to win at the venue after Juan Martin del Potro (2011, 2012), David Nalbandian (2002, 2006) Gaston Gaudio (2005) and Juan Chela (2004).Berdych came to the court with a 3-0 record in his series against the Argentine and had beaten Berlocq on clay in Dusseldorf and in Davis Cup. The Czech was bidding for the ninth title of his career while Berlocq added to his other trophy from Bastad in Sweden last summer.Berdych was momentarily derailed by a second-set time violation called by umpire Fergus Murphy. After regaining his composure after several games of complaining about the call, Berdych found himself in trouble -- he was broken in the final game of the second set and never recovered. In the third set, Berdych dropped to 0-5 before getting a break-back.A double-fault a game later set up a match point, which Berdych saved before going down to the loss when his sliding volley hit the net on a second Berlocq match point. This was a tough loss but Carlos played really well, he opened it up after the first set. He showed he's a big fighter and that he can do well on his court, on clay, said Berdych. It was still a good week for me, I'm glad I could come and play as a wildcard.Everything went well up until the final. It's always disappointing to lose a match, but it's like that one day and different the next.Berdych suffered only his sixth loss of the season while Berlocq improved his season record to 9-7.

Tennis: Serena, Sharapova cruise in Madrid, Djokovic withdraws

MADRID (AFP) - Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova eased through their Madrid openers Sunday but Novak Djokovic withdrew with the right wrist injury which could compromise his French Open dream.World number one Williams began the defence of her Madrid Open title with a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 win over Swiss 17-year-old Belinda Bencic while Sharapova was equally untroubled in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Czech Klara Koukalova.Djokovic, the world number two who had been targeting Rafael Nadal's number one ranking, was forced to pull out after failing to recover from his ongoing wrist injury. The six-time Grand Slam champion suffered the injury in losing to Roger Federer in the semi-final of the Monte Carlo Masters a fortnight ago.I am sorry for the tournament and the Spanish fans that I have to pull out of the Madrid Open, said the Serb star, the 2011 champion in the Spanish capital, in a statement.I have done everything possible to be able to play in Madrid, which is one of the most important events of the year, but, unfortunately, the injury I have in the right wrist has become inflamed again.I will now take my time to recover from the injury with the hope of being ready to play in Rome (from next weekend). The injury also means that Djokovic is facing a race against time to be fully fit for the French Open, the only major he has yet to win, which gets under way in three weeks' time.Williams, a 17-time Grand Slam winner, was playing for the first time since suffering a shock defeat to Jana Cepelova in Charleston over a month ago.But she showed no sign of rustiness to set up a second round meeting with China's Peng Shuai. With Swiss compatriot Martina Hingis watching from the stands, Bencic made a bright start and had two break points to lead 2-1 in the first set. However she was then unable to cope with Williams' powerful groundstrokes as the American raced through the rest of the first set.Williams was even more relentless as she moved into a 5-0 lead in the second set and, despite some resistance from Bencic to save match points in the sixth game, the two-time Madrid champion went on to seal victory in just under an hour.Such was her dominance that Williams even racked up 21 consecutive points at one stage on Sunday.Four-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova made light work of Czech veteran Koukalova.Sharapova claimed her first title of the year on clay in Stuttgart two weeks ago and continued her return to form after a difficult start to the year to take victory in little over an hour.It was a good start for me, said eighth-seeded Sharapova. Obviously the first match at a new event is always challenging because you don't know what to expect, especially coming off the indoor tournament last week. It's always an adjustment to get yourself prepared for the first round. I'm happy that I won in two good sets today.Last year's finalist in Madrid will next face unseeded American Christina McHale. It was a more difficult afternoon for fifth seed Petra Kvitova as she needed a final set tie-break to overcome Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7/4).The former Wimbledon champion looked well on course for the second round after racing through the opening set, but was then broken four times in the second as the world number 27 levelled the match. Both women were more stable on serve in the decider as it went to a tie-break after just one break apiece and Kvitova eventually had too much to set up a meeting with American Varvara Lepchenko. There were also wins for 11th seed Ana Ivanovic who overcame Madison Keys in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) and Sloane Stephens who beat Romanian qualifier Monica Niculescu 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.Seventh seeded German Angelique Kerber was trailing French qualifier Caroline Garcia 6-3, 2-0, when she had to retire because of a back injury.

Tennis: Murray considering McEnroe as coach

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has not ruled out seven-time Grand Slam title winner John McEnroe as his next coach, the British world number eight said on Sunday.Murray has been without a coach since splitting from Ivan Lendl in March and US legend McEnroe has already expressed an interest in working with the 26-year-old.Every player would consider someone with his credentials, Murray told the BBC at the Madrid Masters.I like listening to him commentate and he has a lot to offer as well. It's interesting but if anything comes from it, who knows? When you are very competitive as a player, you are likely to be the same as a coach and that's also a benefit. He was a great player and he's always kept an interest in the game, which is important. He has a great knowledge of the sport.McEnroe, 55, revealed his interest in hooking up with Murray on a visit to Scotland last week.If Andy Murray picked up the phone and asked me to coach him, of course I would think about it, said the former world number one.Murray begins his Madrid Masters campaign against Spain's Nicolas Almagro, who beat world number one Rafael Nadal at the Barcelona Open last month.

Football: Advantage City, Liverpool as Chelsea held

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Norwich on Sunday, a result which handed the Premier League title initiative back to Manchester City and Liverpool. The stalemate at Stamford Bridge all but ended Chelsea's title bid, with Jose Mourinho's men now a point behind both leaders City and second-placed Liverpool with just one match of their league season remaining.Liverpool will return to the summit if they win away to Crystal Palace on Monday. However, City will still have a game in hand on both Liverpool and Chelsea after Monday's match at Selhurst Park.Norwich's battling effort left them on 33 points with one game remaining and on the brink of relegation.Sunderland are also in danger on 35 points but the north-east side have two games still to play as do West Bromwich Albion, beaten 1-0 at Arsenal on Sunday, who have 36 points. It was quite a day, Mourinho told Sky Sports as he criticised what he said were Norwich's 'defensive' tactics, after himself coming under fire for parking the bus in Chelsea's win at Liverpool last week. We had one team (Norwich) that needed three points to have a chance to survive -- but didn't play to win and a team (Chelsea) that needed a point to finish third and guarantee a Champions League group stage place that played to win.He added: I said the title chance had been gone for a few weeks. Today was a question of pride and trying to give fans a victory at home.Norwich manager Neil Adams praised the Canaries' outstanding display and he felt the visitors should have had a first-half penalty when Martin Olsson appeared to be taken out by John Terry. It keeps us going for sure. I thought the performance was outstanding. We had a game plan and virtually executed it to perfection. We were so strong, so solid. I felt we had a stonewall penalty in the first half and if we'd had got that we would have had two more points, added Adams, whose side are at home to Arsenal on the final day of the season a week on Sunday.Earlier, Arsenal celebrated their qualification for next season's Champions League with a 1-0 win at home to West Brom.France striker Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game when he headed in a 14th-minute corner.Everton's 3-2 defeat by Manchester City on Saturday meant Arsenal kicked-off at the Emirates Stadium knowing they could not be caught in the race for fourth place in the Premier League and a spot in next term's Champions League.I believe the mentality of the team was outstanding (in reaching the Champions League), said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose side will look to end a nine-year spell without a major trophy when they face Hull in this month's FA Cup final at Wembley. We still have games in front of us. You can be pleased of the attitude, but frustrated because we were top of the league (for 128 days) then we dropped off. We had injures -- three or four players who missed too many games. And in some games, at the start away from home, we were caught by surprise. We were perhaps too cautious and not confident enough. We paid a heavy price for it.This result left West Brom three points above the relegation zone, but still with two games to play.Although Sunderland and Norwich are still below his side in the table, Baggies manager Pepe Mel refused to accept the Midlands side had beaten the drop. No, an extra point we need, we have two matches and one point to get, the Spaniard said ahead of his side's match at Sunderland on Wednesday.

Football: Juve secure Serie A title as Roma crash at Catania

MILAN (AFP) - Juventus secured the 2014 Serie A title with three games to spare on Sunday after closest challengers Roma were stunned 4-1 away to relegation-haunted Catania. It is the Turin giants' 30th official title in Italy's top flight and third in succession under coach Antonio Conte.Juventus remain on course to become the first team in Serie A to finish with at least 100 points. After hosting Atalanta on Monday, Juve travel to Roma next week and close out the season at home to Cagliari.Juventus had congregated at a hotel in Turin on Sunday afternoon to watch Roma's upset on television and immediately after the final whistle the celebrations began.Several players, among them striker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, posted brief messages on Twitter: Campioni We are the champions, we are the champions, read another from the club's official Twitter feed alongside pictures of the players dressed in identical black t-shirts making reference to the club's belief they have won 32 titles.Juventus were stripped of two Serie A titles, which they won in 2005 and 2006, following their demotion to Serie B for their role in the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal.Defender Leonardo Bonucci made reference when he posted a message on Twitter which read: Champions 32.After the five-title winning streak, this is a feat that no other great Juve sides had achieved, Juve coach Antonio Conte said.Club CEO Beppe Marotta heaped praise on the 44-year-old coach: It's an extraordinary and unique achievement. We said and knew that it would be a difficult season, but we were able to count on a superb coach and team who had great hunger and motivation to achieve this third title.Roma had emerged as Juve's only real challengers this season after setting a new Serie A record of 10 opening wins under French coach Rudi Garcia. But despite defiantly clinging to Juve's heels in recent weeks, the Roma boss on Saturday finally conceded defeat to Juventus. The championship is over. Tomorrow's (Sunday's) result at Catania won't change a thing, but we'll still be going there looking to win, said Garcia. After a testing season trying to keep pace with the Juve juggernaut, which went on a 22-match unbeaten run following a shock 4-2 away defeat to Fiorentina in their eighth match of the season, Garcia's words appeared to have a soporific effect.Roma were expected to claim another 10th successive win to match their positive start to the campaign but were 2-0 down inside 34 minutes thanks to a brace from Mariano Izco.Despite Francesco Totti reducing the arrears three minutes later, further goals from Gonzalo Bergessio and Pablo Barrientos humiliated the Giallorossi.Garcia was perplexed, and said: We got everything from, myself and the players. The only thing I did right was saying the title race was over.Roma will host Juve next week at the Olympic Stadium, where ugly scenes were played out at the Italian Cup final between Fiorentina and Napoli on Saturday. The Frenchman added: Next week must be a festival of football, for Roma to show we're happy and proud of what we've achieved this season.Elsewhere, Torino and Parma boosted their hopes of European football next season with 1-0 and 2-0 wins over Chievo and Sampdoria respectively.Torino's win in Verona kept them in sixth place, the last possible spot offering a Europa League place via the Italian Cup.Napoli, who are virtually qualified for the Champions League, won the Cup on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Fiorentina, who are already virtually assured of a place in the Europa League.Torino hold a one-point lead over Parma, who moved up to seventh, and a three-point cushion on Lazio and Verona, who face each other on Monday.Milan are a point further adrift in 10th place but will be back in Europa League contention if they prevail over Inter in the city derby later Sunday.Meanwhile, veteran Udinese striker Antonio Di Natale hit a brace in a 5-3 home win over Livorno, who dropped to bottom spot with Catania moving the other way.Livorno have 25 points, one, three and four points fewer, respectively, than fellow-relegation candidates Catania, Sassuolo and Bologna.

Motorcycling: Marquez wins Spanish MotoGP

Posted:

JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA (AFP) - World champion Marc Marquez continued his perfect start to the season by winning the Spanish MotoGP for the first time at Jerez on Sunday. The 21-year-old won his 36th Grand Prix in just his 100th race with seven-time world MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi second on a Yamaha, just ahead of Marquez's compatriot and Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa.Marquez, who had won all three previous Grand Prix this season, in Qatar, Texas and Argentina, extended his world championship lead over Pedrosa to 28 points. He became the first rider since Australian Mick Doohan in 1992 to win the first four races of the year.I'm really happy, it's a different kind of victory. I struggled a little bit this weekend and the level is so high with Pedrosa, Jorge and Valentino, who are all very strong, said Marquez, who won in a time of 1min 39.841sec.In the beginning I was able to open a gap and push. I know that Dani and Valentino are so strong at the end of the race and with new tyres I felt better than on old tyres so I pushed very hard at the start.Marquez said he was reluctant to predict a fifth successive victory when the championship moves to Le Mans in France on May 18.Le Mans is a weekend with a big question mark over the weather. We finished third there in the wet last year and we feel strong in the dry. But for the moment we'll enjoy this victory and get ready to test tomorrow, said the Spaniard.Marquez had started on pole and was in a class of his own all afternoon in the blistering Andalusian heat.By the 12th lap he had already built up a four-second lead and after that he merely managed his advantage comfortably until the end of the race.Behind him there was a great battle brewing between Rossi, who took his second podium of the year, and Pedrosa.Rossi had to use all his 35 years of experience to hold off the charging Pedrosa, a twice former winner in Jerez, on the final corner with the pair going neck and neck.I'm very, very happy because Jerez is one of my favourite circuits and one of my favourite weekends because of the crowds around the track, said Rossi, who was 1.5sec behind Marquez.Since 2010 I have not been on the podium here, so it's great to be back.Pedrosa passed Lorenzo on lap 20 of the 27-lap race, but was unable to overtake Rossi despite several attempts. It was a very hard race from the beginning, I couldn't control the bike very well as I had the front end closing. I couldn't push and almost crashed twice. I went for a rhythm I knew I could handle, said Pedrosa.Rossi's Yamaha team-mate, the twice world champion Jorge Lorenzo, had a disappointing afternoon, coming home fourth more than eight seconds behind Marquez in his 200th GP and on his 27th birthday.Earlier, Finland's Mika Kallio won the Moto2 race ahead of Switzerland's Dominique Aegerter and Jonas Folger of Germany. It was the Kalex rider's 14th career win but only his second in Moto2.Italian Romano Fenati won the Moto3 race ahead of Spaniards Efren Vazquez and Alex Rins.It was the KTM rider's second straight victory following his win in Argentina a week ago.

Snooker: O'Sullivan edges 10-7 ahead in world final

LONDON (AFP) - Defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan led Mark Selby 10-7 at the end of the first day of the all-English World Championship final on Sunday.'The Rocket' is bidding to win his third successive world title and sixth in all at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre in northern England, having never lost in snooker's showpiece match.By contrast Selby is seeking to be crowned champion of the world for the first time, having lost in the climax of the 2007 edition to Scotland's John Higgins.Yet there was little to choose between the two players in Sunday's opening exchanges in the best of 35-frame final which will conclude on Monday.Indeed had it not been for a surprise missed black in the eighth frame, Selby would have ended the first session all square at 4-4.But it was O'Sullivan who recorded the lone hundred-break of the session with a contribution of 103 seeing him take the third frame while breaks of 69 and 63 helped him move ahead.During the evening session, O'Sullivan moved into an 8-3 lead. But Selby clawed his way back into the match, even though O'Sullivan made a break of 131 in the 14th frame.Selby is aiming to avoid an unwanted hat-trick of defeats in the finals of snooker's three major tournaments this season, having lost to Australia's Neil Robertson --- the man he defeated in his Crucible semi-final -- in the climax of the UK Championship and going down 10-4 to O'Sullivan at the culmination of the Masters.

Giles 'bitter' at England snub

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ashley Giles has said he was bitterly disappointed to miss out on being appointed as the new head coach of England.Peter Moores was recalled for a second spell in charge after Andy Flower stood down following Englands 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia.Former England spinner Giles appeared to be in pole position to replace Flower, having been the national limited overs coach since November 2012 and a member of the selection panel. However, his cause was not helped by a poor run of results in one-day games in Australia and Englands humiliating loss to the Netherlands at last months World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.I was confident (of getting the job), Giles told Sky Sports on Sunday.I went into the interview and thought I had as equal a chance as anyone else, if not a better chance having been close to the team and known what the systems are and, at the same time, not really had full control.I cant go into too much detail about that process, but Im bitterly disappointed I didnt get the job, the former Warwickshire left-armer, who subsequently coached the Midlands side to the 2012 County Championship title, added. However, Giles insisted: At no time or stage does that mean I wish anyone in that side any ill going forward. We all want England to do well.England play their first match since Mooress re-appointment when they face Scotland in a one-day international in Aberdeen on Friday.
