Report: Iran police airplane crash kills 7

Posted:

TEHRAN (AP) - An Iranian police airplane flying to the countrys southeast crashed late Saturday, killing all seven people aboard, including a top police officer, the countrys official news agency reported. The propeller Turbo Commander airplane crashed in the mountains outside of the provincial capital of Zahedan and searchers later found the wreckage, IRNA reported. The agency said the flight carried four passengers and three crew members.Among those killed was Gen. Mahmoud Sadeqi, a senior police officer in charge of investigations, IRNA reported.Irans semiofficial Fars news agency says the plane took off from Tehran to head to southeastern Iran to investigate an incident involving an attack on police there, without elaborating.Authorities offered no immediate explanation for the crash, though Iranian airlines, including those run by the state, are chronically strapped for cash, rely on aging planes and have a spotty maintenance record. While some operate Boeing and Airbus models, spare parts for Western-made planes are often hard to come by largely because of sanctions aimed at Irans nuclear program. Some sanctions have eased in recent months, however, due to an interim nuclear deal with world powers. Those difficulties have left Iranian airlines increasingly reliant on planes developed by the Soviet Union and its successor states, though parts for aging Soviet-era planes can also be tough to get. Thats caused the country to be hit by a series of deadly crashes. In August, a commercially flown IrAn-140, a twin-engine turboprop plane built with Ukranian technology off an old Soviet-era design, crashed after takeoff from Tehran, killing 39 people. The last major airliner crash in Iran happened in January 2011, when an Iran Air Boeing 727 broke to pieces on impact while trying an emergency landing in a snowstorm in northwestern Iran, killing at least 77 people. In July 2009, a Russian-made jetliner crashed in northwest Iran shortly after taking off from the capital, killing all 168 on board. A Russian-made Ilyushin 76 carrying members of the Revolutionary Guard crashed in the mountains of southeastern Iran in February 2003, killing 302 people aboard.

Taliban, other attacks kill 4 in Afghanistan

KABUL (AP) - A Taliban suicide bomber struck a police headquarters in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing one policeman and wounding three, while gunmen killed two Afghan truck drivers on a road in the countrys east, officials said. The attacks reflect the militants persistent campaign against the Western-backed Afghan government, which last month signed a security deal with the United States and a separate agreement with NATO allowing over 10,000 foreign troops to train and advise Afghan forces after the international combat mission ends at the end of the year.More than a decade after U.S. forces helped topple the Taliban in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, Afghanistan is still at war with the Islamic militant group, which regularly carries out attacks, mainly targeting security forces. In Saturdays bombing, the attacker, dressed in a police uniform, walked into the compound housing the police headquarters in Lashkhar Gah, the capital of southern Helmand province, a local police spokesman said.He was stopped before entering the compounds main building where a security meeting was underway but he managed to detonate his explosives, killing one policeman and wounding three others, said Fared Obiad, the spokesman. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement sent to media. The Helmand provincial capital was also the scene of a Taliban suicide car bombing on Wednesday that targeted a former police chief but killed five other people. Also Saturday, gunmen opened fire and killed the two truck drivers in eastern Khost province, said Mubariz Mohammad Zadran, the spokesman for the provincial governor. The two were working for a local construction company and were taking gravel for a road under construction when they came under attack in Bak district, said Zadran. Also in the same province, the governors office said two police officers and one civilian were killed in the provincial capital, Khost, when a bomb-rigged bicycle was detonated by remote control on Friday. Three policemen and another civilian were wounded in that attack. In other reports, three civilians died when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in southern Uruzgan province, said Dost Mohammad Nayab, spokesman for the provincial governor. Eleven people were also wounded in that explosion, which occurred in Chora district late on Friday afternoon. No group claimed responsibility for the attacks in Khost and Uruzgan.

Most of them immigrated in the 1960s when Germany was recruiting guest workers from Turkey.Thousands of Kurdish protesters also marched in Paris on Saturday to demonstrate against the Islamic State group.

Federer ends Djokovic's 28-match streak in China

Posted:

SHANGHAI (AP) - It took a perfect match by Roger Federer for Novak Djokovics 28-match winning streak in China to come to an end.In their first match since Djokovic edged Federer to capture his seventh Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, the Swiss star exacted a measure of revenge with a commanding victory in the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday.Federer broke Djokovic twice to defeat the Serb 6-4, 6-4 and halt his impressive streak dating back to 2010. During that stretch, Djokovic captured the China Open in Beijing three times and the Shanghai Masters twice. He played a perfect match, Djokovic said. Tonight is definitely one of the best matches he has played against me, thats for sure.Federer also ended Djokovics 43-match overall win streak to start the 2011 season when he beat him in the French Open semifinals that year.I look forward to the big occasions, Federer said. Doesnt matter where it is in the world because theres always a lot on the line, its a good story. It was the same again tonight.Federer nearly didnt even make it past his opening match this week. The 17-time major winner was almost out of the tournament when he was forced to save five match points before beating Leonardo Mayer in a three-setter that ended well after midnight. Now hes into the final with a chance to win his first title in Shanghai and fourth of the year against Frenchman Gilles Simon on Sunday.I was thinking about it midway through the match when I was up a set and a break going, Hmm, should I be here or elsewhere? Federer said. Clearly I feel very fortunate being in the tournament. But thats sometimes how things go.In their last match in the Wimbledon final this summer, Djokovic and Federer battled for five grueling, momentum-shifting sets before the Serb finally finished it off in four hours to capture his seventh Grand Slam title.Their 36th career meeting in Shanghai wasnt nearly as close.Federer relentlessly charged the net and volleyed with precision, winning 20 of his 35 forays. He also served strongly, hitting four aces in a row to win one game in the first set and fighting off the only break point he faced.Djokovic had been the one dominating opponents in China the past two weeks. He didnt drop a set last week en route to capturing his fifth China Open title in Beijing, overwhelming Tomas Berdych so completely in the final, it was a struggle for the Czech player to win a single game.Against Federer, though, Djokovic was far more error-prone than usual. At 2-all in the first set, he misfired on his forehand several times to allow Federer to break and then played another sloppy game to open the second set and drop serve again right away.Federer next plays Simon, a player who hasnt beaten him since 2008. That match, however, was also played in Shanghai, at the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup.Simon rediscovered some of his old form to defeat Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 7-6 (1) to reach his first Masters-level final in more than six years. The Frenchman won all but two points on his first serve and never facing a break point. He also handled Lopezs aggressive serve-and-volley game with ease, firing numerous passing shots down the line for winners and breaking the Spaniard twice.I was feeling really good from the baseline. I felt I almost didnt lose one point from the baseline the whole match, Simon said.Simon had been a mainstay in the top 20, but middling results this year including seven opening-round losses saw his ranking dip to No. 44 in June.In recent weeks, however, the Frenchman has been reborn. Having lost 11 of his past 12 matches against top-10 players before the U.S. Open, hes suddenly beaten three No. 5 David Ferrer in New York, and No. 4 Stan Wawrinka and No. 7 Tomas Berdych here in Shanghai.Hes now projected to return to the top 20 next week win or lose against Federer in the final. When Im playing good, I can play at (the top players) level, Simon said. This Im not worried. The question is whether I will be able to do it tomorrow.

Poland beat Germany 2-0 for 1st win over neighbor

Posted:

WARSAW (AP) - Poland defeated World Cup champion Germany 2-0 in their European Championship qualifier on Saturday for its first win over its neighbor at the 19th attempt.Arkadiusz Milik scored with Polands first shot on target in the 51st minute, heading Lukasz Piszczeks floated cross to the empty net after Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer missed it.Robert Lewandowski set up Sebastian Mila to score inside the far post in the 88th.Were delighted to have beaten Germany for the first time. You can see how much it means to people, said Piszczek, who plays club football for German side Borussia Dortmund. We had a little bit of luck, thats why we won. We took our chances. We had two or three, and we scored two goals. Germany had a lot of chances and they didnt take them. The Polish-born Lukas Podolski came closest for Germany, but struck the crossbar in the 80th, three minutes after coming on a substitute, and there was still time for Mario Goetze to blaze over and Toni Kroos to shoot narrowly over from a free kick, albeit after Mila sealed the result.I cant fault the team, but perhaps we should have made more of our chances, Germany coach Joachim Loew said.Poland handed Germany its first defeat after 18 competitive games, and its first loss in qualifying after 33 matches since a 3-0 loss at home to the Czech Republic in October 2007.Earlier, Robbie Keane scored a hat trick in a 13-minute span to help Group D rival Ireland to a 7-0 rout of Gibraltar in Dublin, and Scotland scraped a 1-0 win over Georgia in Glasgow thanks to Akaki Khubutias first-half own goal. After two games, Poland and Ireland lead the group with maximum points, with Germany and Scotland behind on three. Germany hosts Ireland in Gelsenkirchen on Tuesday, while Poland plays Scotland in Warsaw.Loew surprised many by handing Karim Bellarabi his debut, and the Bayer Leverkusen winger was Germanys best attacking threat in a first half of limited chances.Polands committed start prevented the visitors from settling into the game. The best chances came before halftime as Germany found a groove. Bellarabi went close, Thomas Mueller was forced wide, Bellarabi forced a save from Wojciech Szczesny, and Mats Hummels fired over.I dont think we played a bad game. We created a lot of chances, Neuer said. The second half started slowly, until Milik capitalized on Neuers misjudgment to bring the game to life.I was too late but of course I wanted to get the ball, Neuer said. It was my mistake. But if Id stayed on the line I wouldnt have got the ball either.Goetze and Andre Schuerrle, twice, sought a response but found Szczesny equal to their efforts. Eric Durm failed to trouble the Poland goalkeeper after Mueller set him up, and was at fault for the second goal when Lewandowski got behind him and set up Milas clincher. He was perhaps badly positioned, acknowledged Loew, who said his side would seek to make amends against Ireland. After a loss you always need to show a good reaction, Loew said.

Benzema shines as France beat Portugal 2-1

Posted:

PARIS (AP) - Fernando Santos began his reign at the helm of Portugal with a 2-1 loss at Euro 2016 host France in a friendly while Denmark salvaged a 1-1 draw in Albania in qualifying on Saturday.Striker Karim Benzema scored at Stade de France after only three minutes for his 25th international goal, and Paul Pogba doubled the advantage as Portugal failed to recover from the shock 1-0 home loss to Albania in Group I, which cost Santos predecessor, Paulo Bento, his job last month.Portugal was made to pay for its sluggish start but improved after halftime, causing Frances defense frequent problems. Ricardo Quaresma pulled one back for Portugal from the penalty spot 13 minutes from time.Albania came close to securing a second win in as many games and a first win over the Danes in more than 50 years after Ermir Lenjani beat goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with a deflected shot in the 38th. But substitute Lasse Vibe leveled from close range with nine minutes to go.In the other group game, winger Zoran Tosic scored a last-minute equalizer as Serbia drew with Armenia 1-1.Albania and Denmark top the group standings. In Paris, Portugals defense was slow to react soon after kickoff as Antoine Griezmann accelerated down the left and Bacary Sagnas rebound was tapped in by Benzema. It was important for me to play a big game, said Benzema, who outplayed his Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. We got the result, but we also played with style.Playing with pace and speed, France dominated the early exchanges although Portugal almost scored in the 21st after defender Eliaquim Mangala slipped and gave the ball away to Nani, who turned past Raphael Varane but shot inches off Steve Mandandas left post.Griezmann intercepted the ball near the halfway line, and gave Benzema another chance, but he was caught by midfielder Eliseu in the box.Ronaldo had an equalizer chance in the 52nd, but his header of Nanis fine cross was kept out by Mandanda.Pogba made it 2-0 against the run of the play with a low effort past Rui Patricio following a good move ignited by Patrice Evra in the 69th. Benzema provided the assist.Quaresma ensured a nervy finish when he scored from the spot with 13 minutes left after Pogba caught substitute Joao Mario in the box.In Yerevan, Tosic avoided embarrassment for the Serbs with a left-footed shot from outside the box after being set up by Dusan Tadic in the 90th.Robert Arzumanyan put Armenia in front with a diving header in the 73rd, and the hosts looked set for their first ever win over Serbia.Armenia, which failed to score in its three previous games against Serbia, squandered the opportunity to double its advantage when Marcos Pizellis penalty in the 83rd was saved by goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic. My players were like lions. At the beginning of the match, I would have settled for a draw, taking into account some absent players in my team, but now I am disappointed, Armenia coach Bernard Challandes said. I am proud of my team.

Tardelli's brace leads Brazil over Argentina

Posted:

BEIJING (AP) - Diego Tardelli scored twice to lead Brazil to a 2-0 win over Argentina in a friendly on Saturday, with Lionel Messi missing a penalty that would have tied the game in the first half.Tardelli volleyed home the opening goal in the 28th minute at the Birds Nest. Messi had a chance to level in the 41st after Angel Di Maria was fouled in the area, but his penalty was saved by Brazil goalkeeper Jefferson. If I had scored, everything wouldve changed, it wouldve been a new game, Messi said. They wanted to defend and counterattack. The team is going through changes, with a new coach who has a different idea than the previous one. Were trying new things, and that requires training, time, games, and little by little the team will reach its level and will get what it wants.Tardelli scored his second after a goalmouth scramble in the 64th, heading the ball past Sergio Romero to seal the win.Brazil has won three straight games under coach Dunga after a disappointing end to the World Cup. Veterans Kaka and Robinho both came on as late substitutes.

Formula One: Hamilton takes pole for Russian GP

Posted:

SOCHI (AP) - Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton, bidding for his fourth consecutive race victory, will start from pole position at the inaugural Russian Grand Prix.Hamilton earned his seventh pole of the season by beating Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg by two-tenths of a second in Saturdays qualifying.Williams driver Valtteri Bottas was faster than Hamilton for two sectors in his last lap but then went wide in the last corner and stayed third.Hamilton leads Rosberg by 10 points and is seeking his ninth victory of the season. He has won the last three races in Japan, Singapore and Italy and Mercedes can wrap up its first constructors title if one of its drivers wins Sundays race.Pole is a great place to start from, said Hamilton, who is seeking his second championship after winning the title in 2008. This was his 38th career pole.Hamilton is clearly a fan of this Black Sea resort and the Sochi Autodrom around the Olympic Park, where the Winter Olympics were held in February. This is really a beautiful place and the weather has been amazing, the British driver said. I really enjoy driving here. The surroundings, the mountains, its quite an incredible place. But it will be tough tomorrow, its a long way to turn 1, Hamilton said.Hamilton said he had no idea how important it was to start on pole on the circuit, since it has never been used for a Grand Prix before. The sunny and warm weather was in contrast to last weekends race in Suzuka, Japan, held in heavy rain and fading light. Hamiltons victory there was overshadowed by the accident that left Marussia driver Jules Bianchi fighting for his life in a hospital. Bianchi lost control in wet conditions and ploughed into a tractor recovering another car that crashed out at the same spot one lap earlier and suffered a severe head injury. The Marussia car is racing only one car this weekend in a sign of respect for Bianchi and drivers have stickers on their helmets expressing support for the French diver.Hamilton and other drivers praised the smooth surface of the Sochi Autodrom, saying there was good grip while almost no tire wear. Its a fast flowing, medium to fast circuit and it should make for an interesting race, Hamilton said. With 125 points at stake in the remaining four Grand Prix of the season including 50 at season-ending Abu Dhabi Rosberg said every race was important.Lewis was quicker all weekend and I have to accept it, but front row is still good, Rosberg said. The track is so smooth on tires, its completely different from anything else weve had.Bottas said he did not know how close he was to the pole.Maybe I took it a little too hard on the tires at the start of the lap. I risked too much in the last corner and went wide, Bottas said. Its not nice to make a mistake but Mercedes have been very fast in the last sector all weekend and maybe I lost one place, the Finn said.Four-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel failed to make the third and final qualifying session in his Red Bull but because Kevin Magnusson of McLaren will be dropped five places for an unscheduled gearbox change, Vettel will move to 10th. Magnusson falls from sixth to 11th, allowing Daniel Ricciardo in the other Red Bull to move up one place to sixth.Jenson Button of McLaren will start fourth and Daniil Kvyat delighted home fans by taking fifth place for Toro Rosso in his best qualifying result.
